"It's not going to be a dump because no team's taking on multiple years at that salary. It's not a dump, meaning no team is going to give you one of their good players and take one of them back. They're going to say, I actually, it's going to be a team that needs a player like smart or white and has excess at another particular spot and might make that swap straight up. You know, that would make sense. Like, would you do Derek white for Marcus Morris right now? Snapping those swapping those salary straight up. You and Joe sway love the good old days. I'm just saying, I don't love Marcus Morris. I'm saying it's salary for salary and filling a position of greater need where you do have a redundancy. No, I'd rather have them. We talked about the value of having these guards because broadband is going to get hurt. You guys who can step in for them and continue to produce at that spot..

"I thought the Derek white, the concept behind Derrick white, was not was flawed. Not that Derek white isn't good, not that Derek white isn't a useful basketball player. I didn't understand them needing a defensive specialist who's not a true who's a combo guard that neither handles the ball and runs the show is not a shooter and also just as more defense on a team that was so desperately starved for shooting. Didn't understand it then. I think they thought they'd get a little more out of him than they did. And since they did this, since in fact it went in the other direction, you could argue that it was a disaster because I think they were projecting more and they got less and they were like crap. I didn't that's not what I wanted out of this. So my point is if that's the type of is that the best player they thought they could acquire or are they married to this email philosophy and is it a shared philosophy with Brad of everyone plays defense have no weaknesses out there? Everything is switchable and that's what we want to do. And is that the way they went? Sure, but it also, it can only get you so far. And so the question is, is that going to be a problem? Like, is that going to be a thing where you're going to remove anybody, you know, you're going to, you're not even going to consider a small point guard that reminds you of Kemba, you know, because they're going to get hunted defensively or a Dunkin Robinson who, if you want to absorb his contract, per se, to get a shooter, then another team desperately wants to get off their roster, wouldn't even consider it because he's a defensive liability. Are you limiting yourself because you're married to the fact that everybody on the floor has to be able to play within this defensive concept?.

"From thereafter, or this could be a, he got there, he's never really good in any never really got to that level again. So only time will tell, you know that there's the G 7 H 24. There's a lot of story left to be written there, but yeah, right now, it's discouraging for sure with the way he played. And I think the important thing is he knows it and no one is more discouraged than he is. He is the most even killed player I've ever covered. Doesn't get excited, doesn't get down. It's pretty much he's in a lot of ways, very, very boring to cover, as far as his quotes and stuff, 'cause he just doesn't give you anything. You know, it's always, you know, they're a great team. That's a great player and I need to work hard. I need to be better and a little while the stuff that guy say when they don't want to say anything. And last night, you could tell he was just he was crushed. He was devastated. It is postgame presser. I've never seen him look like that. And that in a lot of ways, as much as it's painful, that's encouraging, because as you may don't kiss it, which is so true, you want it to hurt. Now for months, you know, take this hurt all the way into October and let that be what pushes you forward. As we go into next season. So it sucks, but it is what it is. I thought the other big story out of this from the Celtic side in terms of why this result came about because the Celtics were the favorite going into the game. There was a point in this series where it looked like the Celtics were in pretty good shape. They were up to one. Up two to one with a lead in game four. That's right. To go up three one and the bench really disappeared. 5 points. 5 points from the bench and the moment looked too big for Derek white. Grant Williams was 16 minutes, one for two shooting didn't really make much of an impact out there. What this is what's so confounding is the bench was so strong in the previous series. They were the guys that were just, they were clutch. They were making plays. They were looking like everything was everything was just on autopilot. Like the pressure didn't phase them and then suddenly here we get to the finals and you get into the later stages and it was like they just forgot how to be successful. Yeah, grant Williams and Peyton Pritchard never really showed up in the finals and I don't know if they just stayed in Miami after game 7 or what happened Derek white was pretty good in the first couple of games and then just absolutely fell off the planet just couldn't make a shot. Didn't look confident at all on a shot he actually just wrapped up exit interviews with actually all three of those guys and they all touched on points of confidence. At points and with Williams and purchase you get it a little bit more. I think there's this white you expect a little bit more because he's more of a veteran but also I think there's some of this, we'll just with the spurs, but he wasn't with the spurs, right? Like he wasn't there for that. He hasn't been around that long. He kind of came in on the tail end of a couple of those guys finishing up. So it's definitely tough. That is this spot where upgrades are needed. The starting 5 is good..

"That was odd. Draymond had a keeper where he attacked Derek white on a switch. Derek white's backpedaling with his arms up. Like shoulder to chest. Nothing. A total non call, draymond misses. They do the thing where wait for the ball to miss before you blow the whistle. And then Gary. Yeah. Oh, that was yeah. That was a yeah, that was a big deal. That was all too, because they forced Jalen to the bench. And yeah, I mean, there's a couple others with draymond. There was the play where draymond tackled grant Williams and Graham Williams was fouled for it. Drew a foul, or was called for the foul. Right. And I think that was the play where draymond got the T two, which was just bizarre. I'm not even sure what happened with that watching it on television. They didn't really explain why draymond got that technical. But ABC, by the way, you got to show that stuff. I don't understand why he just got talking about why don't you show us what happens. That was bizarre. So yeah, I think the tech, I have never maybe you can refresh my memory. I can't remember any time a coach has admitted to purposefully getting a technical foul because he was fed up with the officiating. And he was purpose. I think he was the word purposeful. And I was like, just the legendary, I love you, mate. It was great. It's honesty. I can't remember head coach ever saying that. And it was clear he was upset the whole game with how they were calling it. And it was a distinct departure from if you watched closely or if you just watch the buck series, the heat series, bam, how bam at a buyer would set screens and that series. KGS. Oh my God. We're calling anything. And that's playoff basketball. That's why it's awesome. And so yeah, the officiating was a little tight, I would say. But just towards the top, it was a situation. You said, I hope they call lay let it let go, like the other two series. But they have to do it both ways. And that wasn't the case, and that's why email and everyone was pissed off. It didn't matter in this game. They call it the right way. The public loses by ten as opposed to 20 probably when all is said and done. But that's certainly in this series now. It's going to be obviously closely watched on both sides, given the fallout from the from draymond situation here. All right, let's wrap up here, we already hit on some adjustments for game three. From my standpoint, I mean, we'll do a quick taste 32nd taste. It shouldn't be playing..

"He does? They get back into the game. They take the lead. So that's when we were critical of Derek white, it wasn't because we don't know he does other things because they were losing games because he wasn't doing the thing of scoring. And if he was, maybe they were in that game. So this was an example of that tonight. They come back behind him, showing that he is capable of having these offensive performances if the shots are falling. No reason to make excuses for him when they're not. When they're not falling, it's because he's not playing well. Offensively. Yeah. What was that? I don't want to say not playing well. It's that simple. But that's a big part of your offense. He was great tonight. He was unbelievable. He was like, everything you'd want in a guard out there. Defensively as well. You know, I had a nice couple of deals. Everyone was ready for the Derek white side bar. I'm sure you'll still see a couple, but I think Bobby's actually working on something too. Bobby's got some Derek white action going this entire way. He needed that way. Man, if the cells pulled it off, that Derek white would have been a feature. Feature story. "Because if Miami is going to be better, one because they're home and two because again, they got their asses kicked in. What they've shown is like the Celtics. They don't like that. When they get an opportunity to get back on the floor, they're bringing it. So the self they're going to get as close to the best version of the Miami Heat as possible to gain 5. Are they up to handling that? Unless everybody's hurt. Interesting comments just looking around Derek white was talking and I don't know if you guys were in on it. It is interesting how much they're talking about the amount of pep talks that the guys are having to give them rob spent a lot of his press conference talking about Derek white Derek white's talking about things that Marcus smart said to him. It shoot around. It's very clear that the Celtics kind of recognize what's going on here with Derek white where he's having a bit of a crisis of confidence in terms of like what is it you guys what is it you guys want me to be or what am I supposed to do here and a lot of the commentary tonight is about you do you man? Just play your game like don't worry about like what's going on around you. Be aggressive. Maybe I make a shot, yeah. But also make a shot. Right. No, but I mean, it's obvious that are like telling him like, 'cause I mean, last game was bad in terms of like, he looked like he was trying to hide. You know, offensively and not really take any risks every time he'd get into the paint. He just kind of circled back around, really wasn't doing a lot there. And he wasn't being aggressive, wasn't looking for it. Tonight, more so, and obviously, again, when that shot isn't falling in the end, fine. But he's still got to take it. He's just got to be him. And you have to live with the results, you know? Yeah. But I like to see the selfies do that though. That's exactly. They should do that. That's great. That's what he needs. What do you mean he's here? You got to let him in. I can't. I mean, you can't. Do you want me to do it? Yeah, you do it. Oh, okay. Hey guys, this is a little laggy. Because I'm in a different location than I usually am. So that might be the issue. If you are a little laggy, but we'll see, we'll see how it goes. It's ten to 15% better than the last time. Give it a shot. Yeah. That's like, now you're getting better. Now he's good. It's like charade. What are you a good quarter out of you? That's it. One good quarter out of you. That's all we need. You need top 5 data for 5 minutes is what you say. I need top 5 Sharon. This is a. The theme is so damn resilient. But it drives me put yourselves in that they do. This was how they should apply. This is what we're really great when not second game back in your place, half you got your ass kicked. Then but this thing is far from over. That gave 5 is going to do a war because Miami is going to play significantly more customers than they did to nicely. The subjects are going to be challenged to match that, but again, some people more like Tatum, I thought it took way too many different breeze there. When could that just wasn't his shot tonight? Derek white did a great job of setting the tone scored the first 7 points that really kind of put them in a nice place nice rhythm. And they just, again, they took control of this game and never let that up. And they're going to have to do that if they're going to close this thing out with a win in Miami, then bring it back here to.

"He sort of fear that the game becomes like rock fights and that these two defenses are just very, very difficult to find ways to counter. And then to your point about role players and not having those open shots, I think Derek white is a really important player for the Celtics for a couple of reasons. One is that he's the player who's probably going to come in and defend Tyler hero who juices their bench scoring. But the other part of it is that in the last round, the role players making the right decision about the shot was really important. So grant Williams is saying, yes, if you leave me this open, I'm going to shoot every single time. And Derek white, shooting last game, even when they weren't going in. They started over 8 or whatever. You have to take these shots. There were a couple that he passed up, then you're like, oh, you can't pass that up. You've got to take on any took one later. And made it. In this series, the role players making the right decisions with the past is maybe going to be more important than what they do with the shot. And that's where Derek white skills become sort of come to the fore, right? Like he makes good decisions. He's a quick ball mover. He does the things that you absolutely need to do. If you're going to find any seams in the sort of long switchy half court defense that you're going up against here, so having a player who can do that, having a whole really a whole team of players who are pretty good at making those decisions by this point in the year, maybe not early in the year, but that they've developed those habits and those skills and that he's really one of those players where I think he becomes a really important part for what the cells are going to need to do on both ends. So those are two players that stand out for me. You know, obviously the players that stand out are butler and a bio in jaylen and Jason and all that. But I think those two guys coming off the bench as both teams 6 men play really interesting roles and how the two teams can counter what they're what they're up against. Where do you, I'm curious to see how for Derek white two defensively, do you think he gets Tyler here on this series? Yeah. And that's just like, hey, we need someone who's quick enough to just stick with this guy and smart for all that he does. Obviously he had played out of his mind in the 2020 bubble and no one could stop him, including smart on the Celtics..

"Fast break and transition is still screenshot is going to be a little misleading because smartest parts running 15 miles an hour ten or whatever it is. So that window was only there for the split of seconds. And so in reality, smart, if he had, if he didn't lose that dribble because I think it was the second dribble, he kind of lost it. If he didn't lose that dribble, that would have been the moment where he could have gathered and whipped that overhead past the Tatum, or he could have tried to throw it early, but he would have had the kind of lost it a little bit to get it over the middle defense of coverage. And then that would have given Yana some time to go close out the Tatum, then he has to give the ball to Derek white and I know people kept saying like Derek white would be wide open but like Derek white is not the guy that you want taking the three at the ends. And people, you know, people will say like Marcus should have gotten the ball to one of their shooters or like Jalen or Jason on the play where he got blocked, but then it's like, oh, but then we also want Derek white to get the shot. It's like, yeah, they're a little bit contradictory there. I think that if he didn't get the ball stolen by drew, he probably was going to kick it ahead to Jalen, who was nearside and Jalen could have dribbled into a three and had the chance to try to tie it there. I think it was probably what it would have happened. But smart fumbled it a little bit. And then drew has the best hands I've ever seen in my life. And to your point about the screen grabs, like, I mean, go back to game one against the nets in the last three seconds of that game. Like how much happened in the last two and a half, three seconds where you could have grabbed any fraction of a second what the screen looked like at the time..

Winning Plays

"Now that's a game or two that's like if he has it going and he made to this wall in the net series and smart's giving you like a one of 8 or one of 9 nights I don't think you should automatically go back to smart there. Especially coming off this quad injury. You're going to go through traditionally, but if white has it going there, you have to, I think that has to be a consideration. This is a luxury that you want to use if it's there. Yeah, and I think the idea of light when they trade it for him as a 6th man coming off the bench like I think the idea of white is what makes him so valuable just because like, right, if you sign in to the starting line, he'll be fine. He'll contribute. He'll do his thing, but him being able to feast on those second units. I think especially it's like working needs to find the most value. And who knows what that means in terms of minutes, like maybe E may does want to just be like a guy that feeds on second units and everything like that. But I think that's kind of the theory of their required was essentially the 6th man who's going to come balling off the bench, but that's not quite as play style, but I just think that's where he has the most value, especially if he can make a few decent defensive play. He's good on the perimeter. That's where you can go, and that's where you should go with Derek white. Don't expect too much. Even if he is missing a bunch of three, it's like, I still think he brings a lot to the game, whether it's making the right path. Don't worry about he'll defend well. He'll do all the little things that people, you know, I don't know, I thought fans would love that kind of player, but I guess the missed shots were did kind of take a precedent just because there were so many of them. So that's kind of where I kind of stand on Derek white there. That hurts, but right now, it's up to 40% from three in the series. The problem is he's shooting 27% from the field. So that needs to continue bumping that up to get the fans back on his side. All right, any closing other closing thoughts here for yaz had 42, do you like how they're kind of handling him in this series? And after a game like that, should they overreact to anything? I mean, I think they stuck with mostly single coverage there. And even the times where they sent two, that was a trouble spot for them in terms of giving up the open looks there. So what do you are obviously asking this? Do you like our grant more on them? In terms of obviously both we're going to do it, but I'm wondering, begin to learn, like, who is the best if you have the last minute of the game?.

"I mean, I wrote a couple of critical columns of me, man, like January, which again, and I think I stand my way around those. I think he made the adjustments. And I also think, like you said, I mean, to your point, and you brought up Brad. I think the front office also made the necessary adjustments. It's like, okay, give move out the guys that are, you know, even if it's going to lead on unnecessarily here because they're veterans, like just get rid of that, the pain pressure can play now. You get the full-time virtual garden Derek white that can just slide right in and now and now you have the trade for ties is just so huge now. Because if they didn't have tight strength, I mean, they have tights right now they've been such a world of hurt in terms of like what you got throughout and is freedom for like 20 minutes a game in the playoffs. You can't do that. You're a 100% right. Such a good point. It's a trade that certainly wasn't necessarily well received or people weren't like clamoring for that deal to deadline, but now you look at it, pivotal move. And you're right. A lot of it was addition by subtraction to like shorter and that was the guy that I actually loved that signing in the off season for them. And obviously, that's why I'm not a GM in the NBA right there. It's a good value. It should have been a good value. It should. It should have been. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. But you had, but you need more shooting than he was able to give you. So come on down. All right, we're going to get into the playoff stuff in a second, potential matchups look at. First, we're going to hear from our sponsor here, bell online, which is your number one source for all your bank needs and sports info and odds..

"Seasons. It's not talking about Celtics, but just in the NBA, that's like a team looks as freaking bad as they did for two months. And then just completely turns it around. Without getting their superstar player back that was missing. You know what I mean? Like, they could spend the same players more or less, you know, obviously you brought Derek white and you lost a couple of role players, but the core of these guys are the same. And for them to just do this 180° turnaround. It's just crazy. I mean, again, nobody can honestly say that they saw this coming. No, no, not even the players. But other than us, I can't imagine anybody else. And even when you hear the players talk about how we always believe we always believe that you may have thought you would be better. I do believe they always felt they'd be better, but I can't imagine that at some point. We're going to have, we're going to have the best defense in the NBA, and we're going to be top 5 offense. And we're going to win like 70, 80% of our games rested away. No, I don't think that they had that type of foresight. But they're better in their consistent. And that's the one thing that really stands out to me. Is there consistency? They're not just beating the crap out of teams every now and then it's squeaking out other ones. They're crushing teams home and on the road. And again, they're crushing teams who have certain players who are dominant. And those players are not being down. And we saw what they did with jokic. He's so much better to play than what we saw against the south as but they made him very small. We saw in Philadelphia. We saw it tonight with Donovan Mitchell who had a great game. I mean, 37 points shot 13 for 24 from the field, 6 rebounds. Usually that's going to get a Utah win. But instead, they got their asses with by damn near 30 points..

"It's like, well, yeah, you just inserted him into the conversation, but realistically he has zero chance at being the MVP. Wait as a better chance how defense, but he's on the edge of that second team. There's a couple candidates there. I'll give you that. So he takes a lot of charges, he's top three in that sense. He plays hard. I mean a million things he does, but you can't have a guy out there for the minute he's out there, frankly. Unable to hit a shot at all. Looking hesitant. Did he hear scout talking about him babysitting the ball? I really described it. Before he shoots, that's essentially what we're seeing right now. There's a hesitancy. There's a frustration, really. So when you hit that three, you could just, I don't know if you saw it, but he was like a massive sigh of relief. Yes. Kind of like held his arm up there for an extra second, just to sort of just to sort of take it all in like, okay, yeah, like that's what it feels like to hit a shot. Okay, yeah, I remember that feeling. So maybe that's what you need. You know, obviously he's thinking about it. He's not he's not naive to the fact that he's going through a slump right now. And I'm sure he's putting more pressure on himself than anybody else's too. So it's not meant to say, oh, Derek white. Worst trade ever, this guy sucks. He can't play. It's just acknowledging the fact that, yeah, he's obviously going through a slump. Now, we're going to have a couple of years to go over that tree. We're going to be talking about that trade for a long time. And I'm sure, Gary white's going to need to do a lot more to make people to make some people okay with that trade because just because of what they gave up, the picks, the one pick and the pick swap if we want to be completely accurate..

"Okay, we're the game starts right now guys. I'm going to open up the floor regarding the Celtics. And Jeff, I'll start with you. The Celtics are finally living up to their expectations. We are based in Boston. I have been listening to Boston sports radio and my God, people have lost their mind. They are finally doing what they're supposed to do. But now people are saying they're going to the finals. Pump your brakes, okay? Pump your brakes on the Celtics. All right, we've seen this tease before, Jeff. We've seen it before. I know bob's gonna say that, but we've seen it before. We have, we have, but it's just such a huge disparity from what we've seen over the last two years to what we've seen now over the last month. And again, now kind of the national landscape is taking notice because they've been the best team in the NBA over the last month or so. So you've got to look at it and why. And I was actually texting with Jayson Tatum last night a little bit about that. And I asked him, I said, why? I haven't, you know, obviously covering a lot of college right now too. So I haven't seen every game. I've seen some, but he said, like, we're whole now. You know, we're whole, we're healthy. We haven't really seen this team in two years. He's right, but it's still unbelievable to me. There's more to it than that. And I wonder how much the criticism finally wore on these guys because they're moving the ball now, and they were moving it even before Derek white got there, but they're moving it even better now that Derek white's there. And they're more efficient. Marcus smart, it starts with him. Jayson Tatum is moving the basketball as well. And they just, they're fun to watch. They went from being absolutely painful to watch to being fun to watch, practically overnight. It's hard to it's hard to understand. I'm going to go all Larry David on you. I am trying to curb my enthusiasm. And I don't listen to talk radio, all that much. I'm listening more this week than I have in a long time. I was in a major reason being my satellite radio is not has been disrupted and so I have no choice. Now, oh, now anyway, I'll get that fixed because I can't live this way. Much longer. I've often said, I wouldn't back out of the driveway without my satellite radio and now I have a problem. Now, what did I say to you guys a month ago? Beginning of February, I said, show me a good month and then maybe we can talk. Right. And I'm the guy that at the beginning of the year after two or three games said, this team is annoying. This is an annoying team because the way they're playing and we know they should be capable of better, but they're not doing it blah blah blah. Okay. A couple of things. Jeff, obviously, Jason allusion to the being hall was obvious,.

"It's been online where the game starts. I just think what Brad Stevens did at the trade deadline is going to be something that we look back on and saying, man, that was in the underrated move at the time, you know? Not just the, again, not just the trade of Derek white, but just reshaping the roster to a space where everyone sort of knows, okay, this is the group..

"You know, he can shoot a little bit. Yeah, I mean, it's been down since he left the Celtics. He's been in the low 30s. He's not really that stretch guy. He's kind of an Al redundancy in that department. He shoots 7 threes. I could get ugly. He's willing to take them. He's just not knocking them down. But you know, again, he'll help them in Philly if he plays. He'll help him because he's athletic. And he can, you know, he's another body. And you know he can knock down some mid range. He can grab some boards. He can play some defense. I think he'll be all right. He can foul. He's going to some double big with him. He'll be back in that double big mold. I'm almost certain. We're going to see some of that. I mean, no choice. No choice because again, you've got, you have an 8 man rotation and four of them are bigs. Yeah. So I mean, it's impossible. You're going to get a lot of things. Let's say if Tristan cuts cut loose, he'll be back here. Don't do that. Yeah, right. Don't do that. He wouldn't. Anyway, again. These are problems that they haven't reared their heads yet because they're playing healthy. They've been healthy. The tight rotation is working right now. And, you know, Derek white is bringing consistency and the defense is elite. All of these things are like a bunch of boxes checked. You're gonna stay in every game as long as it's going like this. We're talking about what happens if. What happens if they go down, what happens, you know, if shots aren't falling, you know, and where do you go there? And again, there's just nothing there past 8, you know, on the team. But I think that's it though. Yeah, it is exciting. We obviously seen them win. It's a puncher's chance now, right? Yeah. Well, yeah, but you also do the backbone of this team is going to be the defense and giving themselves that chance and also you have two all stars and Tatum and brown. So I think that he May and Brad are like, look, let's roll the dice and see what happens. I mean, I don't think they envisioned that the team would be at where they were at the trade deadline, but they did their best and reshaping this roster to help fit their needs. And that's between Tatum and Rome. Like I said, this is different. I don't think we've seen anything like what they're trying to do here in recent history..

"Earlier, Bobby, what bothers me about that first trade is I believe you can make it without having to have given as much, but you gave that much because you needed to move salary to stay. If you weren't worried about the tax, you, if they weren't worried about the tax they'd be better today. Can you unequivocally? I don't know, it felt like they dodged it pretty well. They dodged it well, but they still, they lost a first in Romeo, which I don't know that they have to lose to make the moves that they made today to stay under the tax. If you keep. And again, we're not talking about these guys please don't misunderstand that we think the number 18 to 20 pick in the draft and Romeo lankford are going to alter the franchise. It's just possible future assets, depth, whatever you have it, that was just tossed into the fact that prichard and nee Smith have a path to playing regularly now. They might not play every night. They might not play a lot every night, but they are right at the doorstep if they can claim the opportunity. So if you can truth serum, you know, Brad and eme and say, you know, what some of what's the reason you made the deal? And they say, if they say it outright, we think Romeo's trash and we always have, but he was useful because he could defend a little bit, but honestly, we didn't want to play him because our bench scoring sucked and he just made us worse. And I really do want to get nee Smith more minutes and I want to get Pritchard more minutes and there was no way to do that with what we had right now. This will help that. And I think Derek white is going to be a star. If they believe all of those things, then you put faith in the management that, okay, they're behind the scenes. They see things and they're doing that..
