"I want to talk about Chris herring's favorite team, the New York Knicks, they are surging right now. Winners of 9 in a row, they are sitting in the number 5 seed at the moment in the Eastern Conference. They just won a thriller in Boston a couple of days ago, being the Celtics in double overtime. Manual quickly, a tour de force in that game, just a ridiculous performance by Emmanuel quickly. The Knicks are in, I believe, as we speak, the top 5 or 6 in offensive rating, they are top 15 in defensive rating. They're playing with confidence, they have all stars and Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, Julius Randle rather Dylan Brunson on that level. I guess the question I'm going to ask you herring is that two years ago we kind of saw this, right? We saw a great Knicks regular season team. Is this team different? Does this team have playoff success potential or at least more playoff success potential than the team we saw a couple of years ago? Yes, just to put it bluntly, yes. I think two things. One, yes, they are not an elite team defensively on paper. They are a lot more formidable when Mitchell Robinson is there. And he missed a lot of time and they were playing 500 ball. During the time he was out, which for them is not bad, but they are an elite team, defensively, especially now with Josh Hart. They've got so many wings they can throw out there. That are disruptive. They've got everybody kind of playing on a string, playing hard. Hot heart was a sneaky good pickup. Josh Hart. Thank you. He was. And to Chris point, I don't give a damn the Knicks win, lose, what have you, but I do pay more attention to them just by having covered them before. I follow so many Knicks fans who were kind of like angry that the Knicks were giving up on reddish, angry that they're giving up first to get Josh Hart, and I was like, have you watched him play? Like the team struggled particularly with Mitchell Robinson was out with rebounding. Josh Hart is great at rebounding. He's great and transition. He was one of the best single transition players in the league just coast to coast. He's a guy that hustles like he's Tom thibodeau's fever dream. Like he's perfect for them. And that's even if he's not shooting well, he has a role on that team. Not to mention that I think advertently inadvertently he's someone that went RJ Barrett is shooting you out of a game that you can plug in. And it puts pressure on RJ Barrett that he doesn't just have carte blanche to shoot poorly to not play with effort. It is a great pickup for them. And so I think the addition of him and their rotation, Quentin Grimes has obviously been there. It also puts pressure on him from time to time when he's not playing well. You know, you don't have to use Barrett, who was shot poorly at times, but has been okay lately. And, you know, to the other part of Chris's question, do they have more of a ceiling than last time, yeah, they have a point guard now. They don't have to rely on Derek rose playing 35 minutes in a playoff game off the bench or having to start him all of a sudden when he's come off the bench all season because you have Alfred Peyton as your point guard.

"I'm throwing this at you unfairly. Yeah, no, thanks. I appreciate it. I think Iverson has a little weirdness to him though towards the end. Just because it was over so for the last 5 years. It was like a boxer who all of a sudden you're like, oh my God, this guy's done. You know, I'll never forget like Ricky Williams is a running back. And just seeing from one year to the next once everything had taken its toll on him physically, he wasn't breaking tackles anymore. The first time you made any contact with him, he went down. It was just so alarming. And that's something you see with a fighter, all of a sudden, it's like, okay, the punch is hurt him now in a way that never hurt before. And it's not apples to apples with Iverson, but like Iverson has the standing. And you know, I feel like there are certain players today, although I'll give harden a lot of credit here. You're sort of hostage to that player, like the packers are hostage to Aaron Rodgers. They were hostage to Brett Favre from the past. We have basketball players who are kind of held hostage by his skill. And that's what the sixers had with Iverson. And it does remind me of some of the stuff we're talking about at the top of this pod is like, okay, what's the perfect thing to do? Like his Dallas actually done the right thing with big switchable shooters and trying to maximize everything around Luke, 'cause you don't want Luca playing off the ball for extended periods of time when he's the best option with the ball in his hand and the leak. So I still don't know, look, Kyrie's gonna score a million points and everybody's gonna get excited at some point. And so maybe it's a quick run through it all. But when Iverson gets to Denver and then you realize like, oh, it's hard for him to play with another one as talented as Carmelo, so maybe the Eric snows and the Aaron mckees and like maybe these were always the right people to have around Iverson. And then I should just starts going from stop to stop to stop. And it wasn't like Kyrie's done a good one himself. But you know what I mean? Kyrie has self sabotaged in a way that we've never seen before. You could talk about Iverson's professionalism or whatever, but like, do the always wanted to play basketball. So that was the only one I could think of. Yeah, it's hard because it sounds like we're talking about guys who may not have fulfilled their true promise their true potential. So it takes off guys whose careers were cut short by injury, so like not Derek rose, because his career was derailed by injuring. Right, exactly. So it's like, is it Derek Coleman? Like, you know, who we had growing up, you know, the kind of guys where it seemed like they had all the tools, they should have come in. Yeah, that's almost like a different conversation. To me, C web is just super weird, looking back. And I'm still disappointed by it, but when you think like he came into the league and it just seemed like he was going to be the best power forward of all time. And he was on that really fun Golden State team. And then it totally flamed out and your team traded for him and they traded a bunch of picks for him and googs. And it was like, this is going to be great. Joanne Howard showed up, and it was never great at any point. Except for that one playoff series, and then, you know, and then they just became a distressed asset almost. They get Mitch Richmond for him. And then he flips it around again with the kings, but then he has this whole last stage of the career where he's like on Philly and Detroit. He's bouncing around for like, what was it like three, four years? I thought that was a really weird career. I want to update my answer. I think my answer is Dwight Howard. Honestly. Oh, that's a good one. Yeah. Because of, you know, what he showed us early on in his career and thinking about guys at sabotage themselves kind of in every situation. Once he got himself out of Orlando, he didn't really cover himself in glory. Yeah, the thing with Kyrie, you know, grown up when we love basketball as kids. And it was the cocaine era and there would be these guys that had drug issues that teams would keep talking to themselves into taking a chance on, right? Like microwave Richardson, you know, the Utah traded for him. Golden State traded for him. The nets. Each time, no, no, he'll be fine here. And then after 6 months of winning, get rid of him. And Kyrie's like, the modern version of that, where it's not a drug problem, but it's just his behavior so erratic, but at the same time, the talent's there. And these teams over and over again are like, nah, maybe, you know? Different situation, put them next to Luca, like I'm sure, don't you think we're solo that they must have watched the 2016 the last three games of those finals? And watched how Kyrie played off LeBron and thought like this is the one guard in the league that would be the perfect guy to play off a guy like Lucas he's done this. There's a track record of him succeeding. And then you start watching those tapes and you just go, oh baby, and then all of a sudden you're making the trade. I don't know why, maybe it was 7 years ago. That's what I say. You're watching those on VHS. Where do you want to they burned onto a DVD? Yeah, I mean, the only reason we care, keep bringing this up is because he is so damn talented, you know? That's what it is. If I owned a team or a

"So do we owe it to the fans as the media, even though we are an independent voting block in this, should we say, you know what? Whether it's Steph over morant Graham awesome and All-Star Game too. But Zion is clearly the most entertaining choice at that last forward spot. Right. Should we think about the fans where we're voting? I think you, I think you think about it. I don't know that you have to decide based on it, but I think it goes into the mix, right? It goes into the pot. You know, along with, again, I'm a dinosaur. I get it. I do think winning sort of matters here. I do think you have to have had some impact on winning. It doesn't mean you have to have the best record in the league, but I do think you have your team has to be doing something good for you to be a starter in the All-Star Game. You know, I just, I don't know. So yeah, I mean, you factor it in, but you also have to weigh the player, right? And so is Steph playing great? Yeah. Yeah, he is. And Josh playing great too. So, you know, you're going back and forth, and then you think, well, you know, the fans love staff, and they want to see staff and they obviously have given him, you know, three more than 3 million more votes than John marantz getting and, you know, I get it, people ballot stuff, and it's kind of skewed and all that, but I mean, you do have to kind of weigh that. I mean, you can, you know, you can make that small market argument all you want, but Giannis is the leading vote getter in the east. Last time I checked, he's in a smaller market and Milwaukee, so that doesn't really seem to hold a lot of water, so people vote for who they want to see in the game. The ballots have been funny in that way, DA, because to the market issue, right? The Knicks, like Julius Randle is 9th among front court players and not close to the top four or 5, you know? No, and then obviously a huge market and they're having a pretty good season and their brands obviously are as passionate as you can get. And the top guard among the Knicks is not even Jalen Brunson, it's Derek rose and granted that may be chicagoans also voting for Derrick Rose out of San mentality, but he's 9th in the guard voting and Jalen Brunson doesn't even show up, so it's like, it's kind of weird and then Boston, you know, a large ish market. Jalen Brown is still lagging a distant third among the guards. We'll get to the east in a second, but it's interesting to see that the voting patterns don't necessarily hold to what we would expect based on fan passions or market size. I will just note real quick on the games played in minutes. The gap between curry and jaw is not as big as you would think. Like curry has played 30 out of 44 games as we record this. Right. Jaws got 37. So 7 games is a fair amount, but minutes curries played a 1021 ja 1186. Whereas if we go back to the front court discussion, Zions played 29 out of 45, 956 minutes, market and sabonis of both played over 1400 minutes. So they've got a four to 500 minute lead over Zion.

"So Chris, what do you make of their offensive struggles? Are you willing to chalk it up to, hey, they need their guys back or are you now in a position where you're maybe worried about Milwaukee? So I'm going to put a lot of it on just they have the 5th worst offense in the NBA. Right. So you mentioned before those Tom thibodeau bowls, which I always thought that they were really interesting from the standpoint of they obviously played a lot of time without Derek rose. And they held their own, you know, largely because of what you pointed out, they played their best players long minutes, even when rose was out, which was risky given that rose might have gotten hurt for that same reason. Anyway, you know, they could hold the fort for just long enough, but then I've always wondered, and there's not really a way to determine it definitively. But I've always wondered if when a team goes without a guy for so long, then they finally get that guy back and then they're right back out of the lineup again because they get hurt or because they like physically aren't right. I've always wondered if that kind of like it would be like if you ran a marathon, you get to the finish line and then when you get through the finish line, I actually got another four miles coming around. Like that has to be just kind of like, God, you know, I'm tired, I'm exhausted. And I think the bucks have enough defense to stay competitive and win a lot of these games. But one, Giannis can't play every minute because butt is not going to butt is not going to be Jason Kidd here and play his superstar 8 million minutes. If anything, we've seen the opposite in the playoffs before where he's subbing on us out with like two minutes left in a game to get him a breather. But I just wonder on some level are the guys exhausted from trying to hold down the fort for so long with that Middleton. Also Middleton is like the most traditional star have, really. Right. Where I just kind of feel like creating Giannis is capable of doing it obviously is a great passer, but he's got deficiencies that make Middleton the more dangerous player of the two. In certain moments, which is why that's stupid thing a playoff run or two ago where we were like, you know, Batman and Robin, but honest is Robin. You remember, so but if you have to have those conversations, there's obviously some truth to it that Middleton is just the guy that he's more of a mid range threat. You know, he's more of a three level scorer than Giannis. So I think that that takes a toll. I mean, if you look at it just on a base level, the role guys, a lot of the bench players have just not shot well this year. Bobby portis has had a perfectly fine year, but he's shot 32% from three. Pat Connaughton normally a very good three point shooter, one of the ones they rely on the most as a role guy shooting 31% George Hill 31%. Joe inglis, who's new to the rotation, but like his playing 20 minutes a game, 31%. So Wes Matthews 31%.

"Out of play when it comes to voting, the name recognition or whatever, then yeah, bridges bring out a better chance of it, but this year or at least 50 50. And guess what? 50 50 is 50 50. And mark out the coin Flint. Exactly. Probably based on what you talked about, the pedigree. The pedigree, the storylines, the subjects did have the best defense. The second half of the year, and so yeah, that's the storm right there. So I don't understand how anyone can be out. It's like, it's pretty simple how this broke down. And yeah, oh yeah, hold on, bam Adam bio should have been doing something like, well, BMI, biomass, like 28 games. Yeah, seriously. So you look at it from that standpoint. Again, I'm not a few. I don't like, I don't get worked up about this stuff at all. Awards. We get more works about the worked up about the people getting worked up about it. Yeah, exactly. This is outrageous. No, it's not. There's going to be probably different award this year that's going to be far more, this is just like, yeah, like smart took advantage of the perfect storm and that's fine. Anyone who anyone who wouldn't want to would have said the same exact thing about. Yeah, I think I remember back in the day when Derek rose won MVP over LeBron. And there was a lot of, you know, like quibbling in a lot of hullabaloo around the NBA, the true network, those email chains. And I'll admit, I voted, you know, I didn't have a vote, but like in our informal stuff, I voted for Derrick Rose, mostly because I was just completely odd in that season. He had. But I had a conversation with Henry Abbott, and he sort of easily convinced me that LeBron should have won. And it's like, that to me was a lot easier to get upset by, right? Then this to all the points you said. It's sort of a down year for defensive player of the year, you know, Kawhi is not in it. You know, like, all these, you know, a lot of draymond mature too. Exactly. And so like, so I don't know. I don't know why they just can't be happy. I think it's smart as one of those polarizing players where if he was on your team, you'd love them. And if he's not on your team, you don't. You respect him, but maybe you don't love him. So maybe they're just thinking, oh, I can't believe I have to have this sort of role player as the defensive player of the year. But the bottom line is he's super well respected around the league among his peers. And to me, that obviously means way more than any of the analysts..

Dual Threat with Ryen Russillo

"I guess on the mock part of this is kind of some fit a little bit. The blazers at 7, you have dame, you have Simon's, maybe you're not drafting bathroom. The pacers at 6, you have brogden there. You just traded for Halliburton. I could see the argument for golf or a guard there. TJ Warren. You guys TJ Warren, blocking Keegan Murray's minutes. So I mean, they have a lot of guys on that team. Where it's maybe not about need, it's just about BPA. I don't know. Now that I bring up BPA, I'm curious, what are you talking to teams Ryan? What kind of feedback do you get in terms of the taking the best player available versus factoring in need? Well, I've always said that the NFL, like you can tell by the way up, right? So I guess you would be out of the way. I just want to double check that. I think you make mistakes big time when you drive for a need in basketball. NFL, they do it all the time. I mean, the need driven picks, even in the first round. It's incredible. How often it's a need driven. Basketball, I think that's where you make big mistakes. I mean, unless it's like Chris Paul and gear three. Derek rose were available. Then maybe you go, okay. We actually can't do this. I think there are rare extremes. There's no absolutes. But if I'm looking at if I'm looking at like, I don't know, I would just go back to your mock here. If I'm the pacers and I'm thinking like, all right, Keegan Murray's 22 and math runs two years younger than him, I guess. We can get on the months here. I just think you make a huge mistake when you go need for basketball, because it's kind of like back to the chat thing. It's other teams that'll make mistakes where they go, well, we knew we were going to be taking on way more risk because it's about trying to get somebody that breaks through and can carry your basketball team. So maybe we'll take a flyer on a guy that's way lower floor because we think it's a chance of being more impactful than going, oh cool, we drafted somebody who's going to be a rotation guy, you know, maybe 5 through 9 on a roster at some point and you guys are going to pay playing the league, you know, 6, 8 years and get paid and the second contract all this kind of stuff. But I mean, does that really make us better? Do we really put ourselves in a position to improve ourselves? And so I don't know, I'm not a big need guy unless it's really, really extreme. We're two guys are completely in each other's way. I think the way the way it was framed to me a couple of years ago that made sense is neat and drafting for a need might be about breaking a tie breaker. If there's a handful of prospects where it's so close between them, you're factoring in need to say, oh, well, what's our philosophy? What are our potential opportunities in the near future with transactions? What is our coach want? What's that system look like? In terms of need, I think, I think all of that does kind of loop into how you end up ranking these players and who you consider the actual best player with who you are and what your team is and what you already have. But ultimately, I don't think you're going to draft a player who is clearly a worse prospect talent wise than someone who is clearly a better prospect, talent wise, and less it's so close. That's when you factor a need versus like you said with the NFL. Teams do do that based specifically off of me. That doesn't happen much in the NBA. But I think need does matter. It does factor into how you end up ranking these guys, which is why it's so tough. It's so tough to rank with a general board. Because for some teams, Chet won't be number one. For others, he will be. He's not a no brainer guy. So to review his Chet one to Houston, jabari two to Detroit, Jade and ivy three to Orlando fours Paolo to OKC, AJ Griffin number 5 to Sacramento, 6 would be Keegan Murray to the pacers, Jalen Durham, 7 out of Memphis to Portland, and then we mentioned Mather in 9 to the Knicks. So I skipped over somebody here who's become the mystery man out of Kentucky, who's also sort of out of Canada. And that shade on sharp. If you watch any of his AAU stuff, you get why, I don't know, I've seen him rank number three going into this class. I've seen him rank number one. Other places have build him on his Wikipedia page. It says that he was number one by ESPN 24/7 and rivals, but then there's other times I've seen him ranked as the number three guy. He never played, didn't play for Kentucky. I watch a Cal pressure the other day, where he was like, if he's going to go in the top three, I'll tell him to go, but they're hinting that he's going to come back to play at Kentucky. He is an incredibly impressive 6 5 perimeter guy with a ton of game, aggressive as hell, there's a lot to really like about him from the AAU part of this. Some teams love him, but we haven't seen him play basketball now for a long time. I have a hard time believing I know what your Intel is that he's not going to end up going in the draft here because we're talking about at least the top ten pick, but what do you have on him? And my impression is he'll go to the draft. We don't know that for certain yet, but my impression is he'll be in the 2022 draft. And with him, I wonder if he's the type of guy who, when teams see him up close with workouts, that's where his stock is going to be really, truly determined because right now all we're going off of is Intel based off what we heard or some people have seen from out of Kentucky. And also from everything that happened before college, playing AU playing in high school and the improvement that we just talked about improvement with bathroom and the guys like Jordan Poole with the shade and sharp, he goes from an unranked prospect to 6 6 go to scoring type who has every move in the book from the perimeter who can defend who's a willing passer. He checks all these boxes of the type of player above the rim. You know he's a great athlete. He can finish with touch he just checks all these boxes of somebody who can be your leading guy of a franchise because of his scoring ability and his ability to do everything else. It's just he's kind of a mystery box. Because we didn't see him compared to all of these other guys and we've seen this story play out before. Jaden hardy goes to the G league. Hardy more of that scoring type as well, who shows sprinkles of some other stuff. He plays in the G league, struggles, some people don't even have him ranked in the lottery anymore when he was a top 5 guy entering this last season. So it could have all fallen apart for sharp had he played at Kentucky. But it also could have really established him as the clear number one, number two, number three guy. Like he was out of high school. All right, how confident are you in this group between sohan ten to Portland, Johnny Davis 11 to the wizards, east and LSU.

"A season with Durant. Totally agree. But we're more playing for next season. We'll have these three guys together. Kyrie will either opt in or will we sign somehow the Kyrie situation will work itself out because that's what happens with Kyrie, just works itself out all the time. You can count on that happening. Reliable guy. And we'll have our whole team back and all of that. But like we've seen in the NBA, these windows close so fast and guys make decisions that you don't necessarily expect. Kyrie will have suitors in free agency if he opts out of that contract. 100% you will have suitors. Like, I don't know who they are. I have an inkling. I would give in the way that Nick's season has gone. You think they're going to rule out making a run at Kyrie, depending on what the vaccination law is. I don't know. I'll believe that when I see it, I guess. Like you just never know. And they salvaged so they had the hardened trade, which made them the greatest theoretical team of all time. That fell apart. They trade Hardin, they salvage like trading a star, you've gone over this morning, like you usually just get killed in those trades. You usually take a bunch of assets that don't turn into enough and you've lost the trade and your whole franchise is set back. Will they salvage that with another maybe star we'll see how Simmons is for them, but you can only do that so many times before you start diluting your talent. If they just fail this year, the clock is not ticking, it's already been taking and now it's accelerating. And Durant's Durant was in the 2007 draft. Look at the guy, look at the guys from look at his peers from that era. Westbrook, Blake Griffin, Derek rose, Al Horford, Jeff Green, three ants old. He doesn't seem like he's old, but he is. He's this is year 15. So I know there's a lot of years messing around here. I finally melted down on TV last week because we again did the segment about can the nets make a run in the east. And I said, I'm so tired. I'm just tired. I'm tired of who's ramping up, who's rampant down what the laws are, who doesn't want to be there, what injury might be real, what injury might be fake. So guys, look at the standings. At that time, the nets are 8th. There are 500. We do this segment every day and every day they lose. Like how much of a run can they make? Oh, they just lost to the hornets last night, or they just lost to the raptors. The record, what are they? 32 and 33 they're now 500. What's that streak they're on there? I'd say they're like three and 12 or something. When they win, I'm like holy shit they won. That's where they are. That's what the streak is. They've reached the holy shit they won portion of their season. Their first game in the play and when they were 8th was going to be in Toronto where Kyrie can't play. Like why are we all acting as if it's a fait accompli that they're in the playoffs, let alone making a run in the playoffs. Let me ask you this though, Kevin. You know, it's coming. The wizards. Porzingis is back. The wizards are 29 and 34. Brooklyn's 32 and 33. They're all the game behind him in the lost calm and they're the 11 seed, but how do we know Brooklyn's gonna make the playoffs? We don't. Okay, so as the season goes on, I still watch every team in monitor every team, but certain teams just go to the back of your brain and their current season ceases to have any meaning to you. And you just say the cupboard shut they're gone. I'm watching to see how abdia and hachimura play together. I'm not checking the stand. I can't, you can't get the wizards from the back of my brain to the front anymore. They're gone. I can't even do it. Let me ask you this. The nets, yeah. I've been thinking a lot about what is their best 5 if they have Simmons back, okay? And Kyrie can play every game, which is, I don't know if that's ever going to happen. But or he's playing. So I think for our Kyrie curry or if not curry pick mills or drag it to whoever you want of like the little guy shooter archetype. Let's just say curry. Kyrie curry Durant Simmons. And then question mark. And that question mark has been gnawing at me because when you look at it, it's either another undersized shooter like mills or drag at your dragon is not a shooter shooter, but you know what I mean? Like another undersized defense challenged guy. It's a wing who fits that profile that you want there, but it's a one way player, like Bruce Brown is mostly defensively. He's been playing very well lately. Camp Thomas, do I trust him, Kessler, Edwards, do I trust him? He's young, or it's a big guy, and other than Aldridge, all the big guys can't shoot Bruce brown's and on shooter, James Johnson's anon shooter, do I want to play those guys with Simmons, so they're really picking without Joe Harris, the nets, if that's their four out of their 5 closing 5, they're really picking between a bunch of choices that are really imperfect in terms of I'm going all offense and to hell with defense. I'm going with curry and mills next to Kyrie, or I'm trying to get enough defense, but how is Simmons gonna play with another non shooter? And you saw how they closed that game in Boston yesterday, Bruce Brown was their answer to that question with claxton in the Simmons spot. I'm really interested to see how they solved that issue. I'd like to pour one out for Blake Griffin 'cause you mentioned 40 nets and didn't mention Blake. Didn't mention it. I guess it's over. So I thought about this yesterday because they played Brown and clacks them together..

"A little bit overblown at times. I mean, I think the one kind of threw away that fits is that and I kind of mentioned this at the very, very end of the book and the epilogue. When they lost van Gundy when he resigned abruptly in the middle of a season in 2001, they lost really the last bit of their DNA because you know van Gundy was a Riley disciple and someone that literally Riley had exit meetings with his assistant coaches as well, and he would ask them what their thoughts were, what they thought they did well, what they wanted to improve on what their aspirations were. And so Riley has been going to because he was basically the youngest coach in the league when he got hired by far. I think it was like 34. He might not have even been that old. I can't remember, but when he was an assistant, Riley asked him, do you want to be a head coach in this league? And he said, well, you know, I guess so, I hadn't really thought about it. I never imagined that I could because I don't have a playing background I ever played in the league and Riley told me don't need that. Really, what you need to start doing is dressing better if you want to be at coach. You know, and work on the appearance a little bit, but he told him he was like, look, if you're confident and you work your tail off and the guy's respect you doesn't matter how tall you are, it doesn't matter whether you play it or not. I see the way you work around here, I see the way these guys respect you because you come in early. You leave late, you work hard, you know your stuff. You've been around the sport for a long time. That's enough. You just have to kind of sharpen some of the other stuff that you probably don't think about in terms of the way you carry yourself the way you talk the way you look to some extent. But anyway, so he trained pat. I'm sorry. He trades Jeff to kind of be ready for that. And he wanted to bring Jeff with them to Miami, the Nick said, no, because, you know, there's obviously tampering involved with pat's exit and pat was still under contract. So was Jeff. So they didn't let him go to Miami. But when Jeff resigned from the Knicks, really unexpectedly, that really took the last bits of really what that era was with them. And so the connection that I draw now is that Tom thibodeau was an assistant under Jeff. During those years, and he came back into the organization, they were a team that worked extremely hard that when you watched them, they were closing out on every shot, extremely hard. They didn't have, I mean, maybe they do have talent, but it's rot out, still it's their young guys. A lot of young guys on the roster. But also, I'm watching guys that I have not, you know, maybe roger feels differently, but I watched Derek rose. I watched him for plenty of years here in Chicago. You know, and he was never a special defender. I still don't think he's a special defender, but knows how to operate within what dividend wants to do and can play within a team system. They played within a really great system. I do think there was some good fortune. I won't necessarily, but you looked at the metrics last year and you looked at how teams were shooting on wide open shots and stuff like that and not just that, but I think I remember doing a strand this at one point, I think they had of the 13 guys in the league that had the biggest three point percentage improvement last year. The Knicks had like 5 of them. It was like rose, Randall, Barrett, Bullock, and I'm blanking on maybe one other guy. Maybe it was for, but they had a lot of guys kind of have career years from three last year, and they were really, really great at defending the three, but also even when they were leaving guys wide open. They were missing a lot of three. So there were probably some good fortune involved with that. And then this year, so there were similarities in terms of like the defense keeping them in games last year that they could win, even when their offense wasn't there. That was what the 90s next were all the time. They didn't have much offense. So their defense was keeping them in games all the time our winning games for them all the time. And last year's team did that too. Now it came back to bite them in the house when they played a team like the hawks that have a lot of offense and a lot of creators. So I think that was kind of the similarity that I took from it. They very much had a ceiling with that team last year. And I think they tried to address it. They certainly tried to address it with kimba and Evan fournier. I don't think that's necessarily the answer. I think we've kind of seen that. But you can see what they're trying to do and you can see what Tom's trying to do sometimes. And you can see some of the similarities, but the physicality is still a lot of different level from the 90s. And I think that that that's the major difference. They work hard and they worked really hard last year, but it was more than just a work hard thing. The 90s teams were feared. And there was never going to be that comparison. I don't think. Yeah, and quite frankly, the league's never going to let anyone get to a point. Never get physically where you're someone else fears you. They've just taken that completely out of the game. What I hear and when you're saying that, it's kind of the way I felt. They were both kind of under doggy type of teams. You know what I mean? Like they were both kind of like overachieving. I think the 90s Knicks probably have more star power overall, like guys that were, but they're overachievers. And Tim's a system is one that I think cities like New York, Philly, Chicago,.

"I don't know that they have a lot of answers here without Derrick Rose other than just hope chemical plays well. Hope Randall finds his game again, finds his jumper again, hope the defense finds itself again, Mitchell Robinson had his best game of the season. Maybe his best game at two seasons honestly against Detroit on Tuesday. Anything interesting here for you? Yeah, I mean, look, it depends what they want to accomplish. Do you want to squeak into the play internment? Great. I mean, one of the things that's depressing about the next to me is I kind of and obviously all this goes out the window because of the COVID lineups, but it's just like, you know, they're playing a lot of old guys for the privilege of possibly squeaking in to being a, you know, even if they replicate last season a first out. I mean, the only thing I care about right now, if I'm a Knicks fan is I want to see a manual quickly when he's on the court play 33 minutes. I just, this desperation of Tom thibodeau teams to make the playoffs and play a bunch of guys who are 30 years old. Because that's what you enjoy doing as a coach because coaching young players is kind of annoying and they're fickle and they don't speak the language yet and they can't read your mind and they're kind of immature. Yeah, I know. It's one of the indignities of coaching professional basketball. But like, you know, if you want to tread water in a playoff race, fine, go ahead, play these guys. But I want to take this as an opportunity to accelerate accelerate the development. And I want to see what a player that I really, really like manual quickly looks like as a higher usage player. I want to see how he can play in traffic. He doesn't do that a lot. Can he reach the rim more frequently? He doesn't do that a lot. He's already decent drawing fouls. I want to see if he can just become brilliant as a 28 29 30% usage guy. Because this is where your future lies. RJ same thing, but it's just like look I just, I know what they're doing. They're kind of de fumigating the place and tips has done a great job of doing that. This has gone from a laughing stock franchise and team to being a place where, hey, respectable basketball was being played. But like, listen, I can't stand not having Derrick Rose in the court 'cause he's Derek rose, but at the same time, let's look at this as an opportunity. Like start quickly. Start him, play him 35 minutes. See what you have. He's a decent pick and roll player who I think can become better. More than just kind of stepping back and hiding behind a screen and putting up a three. Like I think he's got some game and he's got stuff he needs to improve on. Just hand them the keys. You're the next you're not going to do anything this year with it without rose, okay? You're a middling team that overachieved a little bit last year and lost in the first round. And that's great. Hey, there's playoff basketball and MSG. Everybody's happy. The town is crazy. That's fantastic. Like, this is a kid you have on a rookie deal who's good. And I think he can be better than good. But we're never going to find we'll find out, but let's find out faster. That is the most passionately anybody who does not write for the wonderful Knicks blog posting and toasting has ever talked about immanuel quickly. I'm taking a back by your Emanuel quickly passion. I will say the tips discourse is weird to me and I think sometimes a little unfair because last year he's the toast of the town because he's chasing wins every single night he wins coach of the year. I didn't vote for him. I voted for Monty Williams. I voted tips second. And nobody minds when his teams win that he plays veterans a lot of minutes. When you get some minutes police show up for him sometimes and slap him on the wrist, but I think last year he did a pretty okay job of easing quickly and top end and obviously Barrett was a starter, but those guys into bigger roles than maybe people expected and this year their roles have expanded, particularly top ends. But now they're not winning as many games. And so the tips playing the old guys here comes Todd Gibson and it's starting power forward because of the health and safety protocols becomes an issue again. I don't necessarily think that that's super fair, but what I would say is I'm with you that if this season goes into the toilet or it's in the toilet. It's in the toilet or it's on the rim. And before the water rises and there are two games out of the plan, like and you know they're all their hellbent on getting at least give me some play in games or a play in game, maybe at MSG if I can get the 7th race, which may be a long shot, but look, 7th is one game over 506th is one game over. The wizards who suddenly can't earn a huge swamp after starting 11 and three or something, are one game over 506, so they're gonna keep going for it, but these next ten games are gonna be telling. But I also say one real world real quickly. I don't think that playing quickly is a sacrifice. I don't think he less than nor do it. Like you can go for the 7 and play quickly. Like, in fact, here's the thing, a guy who gets 34 minutes united his age might be better by late March than he is today. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. And I'm with you in that the mystery for quickly to me is the playmaking. I don't know if he's just a spark plug shooting scoring guard or what kind of playmaking.

"Hello, everybody happy Friday. Welcome in to the NBA front office show. We've got a lot to break down today as usual Keith. I know you've got a certain web slinger to go see in the theaters. I'm so jealous. I can't. My daughter's 5. I can't take her to these kind of movies, just yet, but at some point I will get to go see it. I've heard amazing things. So you're going to have to let me know how it is. Well, dude, yeah, well, I will let you know without spoiling anything so much. Yeah, I was like, we're actually going today and tomorrow. I was just a kind of happy accident. But yeah, we're excited. It's going to be good. So we're both fired up where we're headed out of here in about an hour. So you're not going to get a super long show today. So it'll be good for everybody. We send off into the weekend with all the news you need to know. All right, well, let's get into some NBA news. Then I guess start things off with the New York Knicks. You know, we talked about them yesterday as a team that they're not quite living up to expectations they're a team that would probably be a buyer right now out on the market and indeed here we have a rumor that they are a team that could be interested in Eric Gordon. He was one of our most likely players to be traded. We talked about the contract and how that could potentially be a little bit of a sticking point for him in a deal with teams, but the next potentially interested in him and Derek rose in particular a driving force behind the Knicks going after him potentially. And it would be an interesting landing spot. I think Eric Gordon is still a good player. Somebody that can help you out. And if you're a Knicks team that is desperate to get back into the playoffs, just like they got their last year. He would make some sense. Yeah, absolutely. Derek gross stuff. I hadn't heard about prior to this. I didn't know that they were AAU teammates. So that was an interesting to learn there. And we see this pretty regularly in the league where guys of they've played with somebody, and then they want to re link up with them, whether it be a college teammate or in this case AU. I think what raises my eyebrows a little bit here is we talked about this being kind of a two year window for the next because most of the contracts they signed this summer had a team option for the 23 24 season. So it was really this year next. And that kind of fits with Eric Gordon because it's not a true team option, but he's got that non guaranteed year..

Dual Threat with Ryen Russillo

"Lot of shows would start today and that Steph Curry breaking the all time three point record. Hopefully I do a little differently than you've heard it everywhere else. And I'm going to start with this. I was a little surprised that this was as big of a deal as it was. And I'm definitely not complaining about it, because I kind of like that we cared about a record again. Baseball records were a thing, depending on how old you were, if you're really young listening to this podcast, you'd be like, what are you guys losers? Like maybe we may have better losers, but we really cared about home run records. I know just because Ted Williams is my father's hero that anybody that flirted with 400, I was like, I hope this doesn't happen, you know? Because I don't know. It's just one of those things. And it's obsessive. It may seem wrong, but we cared. And anybody who had a certain number of home runs at the all star break, I would be sitting there trying to figure out, okay, well, this many games are played. You know what's the best chance? Dale Murphy had a couple first half, but again, the baseball first half plays more than 81 games. So it wasn't always perfect math on all of that. But we cared about all of this stuff. And certainly with a steroid era, however you feel about that. There's something that's not debatable is that it's taken away a lot of interest in the home run chase and all this stuff. It's just not really the same. And the fact that we're not having ironically as many home runs. So with basketball, the all time scoring deal, it's probably going to happen with LeBron passing Kareem unless LeBron would have devastating injuries here at the end. I think that will happen. And that will and should be a bigger deal than Steph's pursuit, because desperate suit was weird for a couple different reasons. The first one is this was not an in season deal. So the angst of him not getting this record, which is partly his own fault because he had toyed with the idea of saying, well, maybe I'll get 16 against Portland. Now, maybe he looked at Portland's line up that night and realized they've been one of the worst defensive teams and goes, you know, let me really see what I can do if I go for it because that's I think something that we've all wanted to see from Steph is just be like incredibly selfish for a couple games. And let's see what happens. And he missed a million shots and it looked like other teams were so keyed up and making sure that he didn't break the record that it then became this kind of lingering thing for over a week. He was always going to break the record. This wasn't 58 home runs with a week to go in the baseball season hoping to surpass 61 when we asked you to use to care about 61. So that part of it was like, okay, this is entertaining. This is the thing, but it's going to happen. There's no debate about this. He's going to pass reality for career threes. And another part of it too is that the game is shifted as such that all of these three point records are, I don't want to say meaningless because it certainly means something to be the all time three point leader, but the inevitability of it because of how many guys take now. It wasn't as dramatic as I think it was being made out to be. So then he misses a bunch of shots against Portland. The Philly game on Saturday night was ugly. He went 6 to 23 or 14 from three. Philly was absolutely selling out like as if we're last possessions at a close playoff game trapping him, running two of them, does probably as good a job, maybe the best single job on stef that anybody does. Although I thought Steph was kind of using some of his chasing against him in the matchup that was at Golden State, where stuff was aware of it and kind of reset himself in a position himself and Bible would just do a blow by and miss. I think die will chase his people down through screens and still stays in the play to contest the shot better than maybe any player I've ever seen. I'm serious. Like do a mental snapshot if you really into hoops and think about all the people that work that hard to get around screens and still get up to contest jumpers from that far out. Have we seen anyone care and put that kind of effort and actually challenge shots the way he does chasing down shots off a screen? Have we ever seen anyone do it as well as die well does it? I don't know that we have. So Steph was dealing with that on top of it felt like Doc Rivers and embiid and those guys were like, look, we care about stopping him and they won the game and they were terrific. I thought it was a little weird I'll admit a team that can't get into the second round, taking such pride in stopping Steph from passing Ray Allen being like, yeah, you know, we're too prideful. Never let that happen. We'll beat the fucking hawks then. So this is the continuing deal. You know, Steph was 19 to 60 from three over it, so it felt worse than it was. 32% isn't great for Steph. It's not the end of the world. And on top of it as much as everybody's like, I'm just so glad this is behind them, whether Steph said it, whether cursed said it, whether you're just going to vibe a Golden State kind of dragging this out and not loving it. They went three and one. So it was weird as it looked because it looked weird, and it was bad against Philadelphia. And that stuff was chasing in a moment this guy who I think has been the best teammate in basketball the last 20 years. The unselfishness of his whole entire approach to franchise end to being a teammate that he felt like, you know, let me see how many I can get up here and see if we can't break this record. So we needed two against the next goes ahead and breaks it. By the way, quick aside on the next and everything else, there are 12 and 16 now I think they're incredibly predictable offensively. They haven't had RJ Barrett now because of the COVID protocol thing. So that adds to it fournier, because they spend a lot of money on not closing the game. And it was the right call, hunting him defensively. And Fourier's just going to have stretches where you're like, wait, how much should we pay this guy? This guy averaged what in Orlando? I just think that forni is the kind of guy that should be just a place that's like, yeah, we get a game tonight. All right, cool. Because this is bad. This has been a bad stretch. Not to say it's always going to be this bad. They're better off in McBride and some of these other younger guys playing. But other than to quickly drive and kind of making it up on his own or Randall getting hot. And again, without RJ, it's not entirely fair. But this is a weird offensive team right now with the Knicks. And I know Derek rose has moments on a nice first quarter. If you go across the bridge, did you guys see what Kevin Durant did last night? It's beyond the 34 13 and 11 in a close win and over time against the raptors. It is a 48 minute night from Durant, where he was playing with David duke, not that one. Cam Thomas, daeron sharp, we know. They're two first round picks. And a guy named Kessler Edwards, who opened, I think, for God street wine a few years ago. He played 44 minutes and actually had 17 and ten. I think it's his third game ever. Kessler Edwards. That's what Durant had around him as he beat the raptors in Scotty Barnes. How about that step back three in the corner? My God, is that guy?.

"Agency. No. You're either going to that what like a year ago, year and a half ago, two years ago. We're on year four of waiting for Kevin Knox to even be good enough to get into the rotation and he's not. No, I'm done with Kevin Knox. You know, the ship is sailed. I saw someone say, maybe it's the same athletic story. Teams calling about Kevin Knox, like, okay. What exactly are you gonna get back in return for me? I'm sorry. Kevin Knox, maybe you can trade him back to Charlotte, or trade him to Dallas to get Reggie Bullock back. Because regulation is not doing anything right now for the Mavericks, and he was really good. He was really good for the next. Yes. Yeah, I mean, look, Kevin, I'm sorry. Kevin Knox is a throw in in a deal involving somebody else. No one's no one's giving the next something of value just to get Kevin Knox. He's become what Dennis Smith was last year. Yeah. Just a guy. Like with a little bit of potential. So here's why their sellers, Chris, I look at this Nick's roster and I say, what are they building and who are they building around and where are they in two to three years? Because two to three years from now, Derek rose is 35 36. So are you do you really like is Derek rose a permanent product 'cause Derek rose would look really good as some as a 6th man on a team that's gonna make some playoff noise, right? Like Derrick Rose has value elsewhere more so than he has for the next right now, I think. Mitchell Robinson of some somebody needed a backup center might give you something for him. Kemba Walker is not even playing for the Knicks. He's on a $8.8 million contract that goes to 9 one next year and that's it. It's a two year deal. Easy for another team to incorporate. If you're not going to use Kemba Walker, I hate to say it because it was this wonderful homecoming, but it's not working out. So this is why I say there's sellers because I don't think there's any combination of these guys that's getting you the player that's going to put you back over the top and put you right on track this season. I do think that you take some steps moving backwards a little bit, continue to try to develop Randall or excuse me, get rid of back on track develop Barrett, topping quickly, Grimes had a big shooting night the other night..

"Happens live. Your beloved nicks are 11 and 11, 16th in offense, 19th in defense, and you know tibs is just straight up grouchy right now about the refs about the defense about probably about the weather about the food he eats, whatever. He's just grouchy. Oh, one of their feet writers say two minute postgame press conference. Quickest one all year, I went out. Yeah, they got to turn those court side mics down in some of these arenas because I'm starting to hear the tips chatter and it's a great time. This is your team Long Island and Jersey Shore's Doris Burke. This is your team. What's the temperature take from you? Well, first of all, my heart heard for Kemba Walker. You know, I have had some best moments, you know. Brennan show a Dave passion I called that run through the biggie's finals. But to me, there were signs of this in Orlando. That was the first time in my life. I'm like, oh boy, you know, can Kemba be kembo? Can he be the guy of a high screen and roll quick into the three point shooting had worked because. Steve Clifford had said you're not going to be successful in this league unless you get consistent from the three pace of price becomes an all star, so that I thought it was the right decision. You know, they feel like they're more switchable, they're bigger, Alec Burks, a little bit more defensive versatility. I'm going to ask you a couple questions. First and foremost, you know, they make the moves get better offensively. Is it me or does it feel like they're getting less consistent focus from Julius or art? I don't know, they feel different defensively. I think we knew they would because they tried to change to a more offensively balanced team. I don't know, I just feel different to me, defensively. I don't know that there is locked in that there is the consistent grinding effort on that side of the floor. Accurate inaccurate. Accurate. I think Randall has been worse, he's been back cut a lot this year and last night, Derek Jones got a baseline out of bounds dunk on him when he just wasn't paying attention. He was quote unquote blitzing, pick and rolls last night, but just sort of standing around doing nothing, not rotating with urgency. He had the best defense of season in his career last year. He's back slid a little bit this year. I think Robinson has just been inconsistent and their centers aren't rebounding. And I think one of the reasons if you ask Tim's why Burke's because I do think Burke's fournier Barrett, it's not quite enough playmaking around Randall, which leads to Randall doing too much Randle ball. But I think part of the reason is rebounding Burke's is a good rebounder. The rest of their guards are bad rebounders. And fournier, look, I thought the fournier signing was fine. I liked it, but I did say I've said this about him in fournier a lot. I look at the numbers, he's up to 39.5% from three. I just never have he's always had this thing in his career and I've said this a lot. This is a new, where I look at the numbers and I watch the games. I just I don't I don't feel that he's impacting the game at a level that fits his numbers part of the reason is he's not as good. He looks like a good playmaker and then you're like, oh, he's averaging 1.6 assists again. He's just not, you just don't feel him. And they're just so dependent when Derek rose comes in the game. There are completely different teams because suddenly someone could get to the basket. They're plus ten with rows on the floor and minus ten with rows off the floor per 100 possessions. They can't start him. They can't play them too much because he'll wear down, but they just feel a little scarily dependent on Derek rose right now to me. Yeah, and it's interesting. And listen, there are never one thing. And look at Julius, you know, from 24 points per game down to 19. Rebounding on par, assist down almost a full one. Effective field goal percentage way down, three point percentage way down, still taken about the same amount. You know, he made 2.3 or 5.53 pointers last year. 41.1% unbelievable. Now 1.85 .4 to jump shot did not hold up in the playoffs. And now it's not holding up this year. RJ Barrett, very similar story, actually taking more threes per game this year, 4.3 last year, 5 at an 8 percentage point dip. So I think there's a lot going on and talked about it himself. He said, I didn't like the direction my team was trending. We needed to make changes. And he did. You know, the question and you, when we were fleshing out ideas for this podcast, you know, one of the things we you mentioned, and you can look up and down the whole standings and see the number of teams within one or two of 500. Have to leave is within one or 205 hundred. Look at the west, 11 and 9 Dallas 12 and ten Memphis 12 and 11 Lakers 11 and 11 clippers 1111 wolves 11 and 12 blazers ten and 11 nuggets, old conference. 11 and 11 sixers 1111 nicks, 1311 hornets, 12 and ten Celtics on and on and on. What reason for optimism? Let's get off in a very good positive note. What's the thing that should give Nick spans hope. I think well, I can think of a few. I think Barrett's shooting was real. And I think so I think Barrett, who was out last night against the bulls with an illness, I think he'll rebound shooting wise. Look, I think the offense has been a little scattershot 16th how much better can it get? Maybe a little bit. 19th on defense, I do think this team is gonna have a stretch where just by force of will top down will. Tips down will. They're gonna dig in and start flying around and have a 15 game stretch where they look like they did last season defensively. And your point is well taken because Mike green on a game earlier, we were discussing the Knicks we weren't covering the Knicks but we were in the pre game situation waiting for people and he did say, remember, the next didn't start out well defensively. There was what you just said a stretch. You got a Christmas tree behind you. You gotta decorate that thing, DB. It's time. It's empty. It's bear. It's a minor miracle that it went up prior to the trip out to San Francisco. The holidays are like just joy to me. So minus up and I'll probably decorate it. Well, you said the word joy. I wish you joy with your family on the holidays. And one joy thing and I'm not saying I said this to you in person. I was in Los Angeles, my first trip to LA this season, I think it was opening week of the season and I didn't because I'm so clueless, I didn't realize that we had the Lakers game.

"Big wise, rob Mahoney, gentlemen. Thank you for joining me on this festive occasion. The greatest holiday of the year. In argument, inarguable. Aren't you? It's the hands down. It's not even. It's completely centered around food and comfort. I don't know what more you could possibly want. Comfort, family, you know, yeah, it's the best. I mean, I might argue that those are aspects of every holiday. And what we have with Thanksgiving is just dinner. Is there anything special in addition to that? I mean Christmas is not about family. It's about price couching and $700 flights to New York or maybe I'm just talking about my own personal problems. And the problems of Christmas itself. I just want to show up and eat or make my food and eat without the pressure of having to buy other people gifts. That's what I want. Okay, that's fair. I love this. And ball finds energy style of a holiday tidings we have here to open up this. This is good. All right, so this is the potluck we've done this once before a couple of years ago. But the shtick here is that everybody is bringing to the metaphorical table. One team they want to discuss one player and then one take, let's start with the team portion and let's start was with your man on the New York streets, just POV on the New York knickerbockers. Things have been a little dicey lately, but they did win last night. So where are you on everything? Where do you want to start with them? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, guys. After a 5 and one start, I'm basically convinced that the Knicks are a play in team. There's 6 in the conference right now. There's at least four teams behind them that I think are gonna leapfrog them sixers, bucks, obviously the hawks, and I think a missing one more in there who I think is going to leapfrog them. But, you know, they're ten and 8 right now. They're about to play Brooklyn, the hawks. They got a crazy schedule coming up. They're about to be something like ten and 12. You know, they're playing as well as they can, right? I think they updated upgraded their talent in the off season, their a more well rounded offensive unit this year, but the defensive magic has kind of run out their 17th in the defensive efficiency right now. That's not gonna cut it for a group that relies upon Julius Randle for consistent high end offense. I just see it as a play in team. I know Knicks fans because I know a lot of them were expecting a lot more especially after the way they came out the gate, but I'm not seeing it for them. You know, much has been made about the starting lineup just thinking up the joint and recent weeks. I think that'll improve itself with minor tweaks, RJ Z in a horrible shooting slump, which again, another thing I think will even itself Fauci, I don't think he's gonna shoot 31% from three all season. I just think that Nick sir, you know, we're running up the Middle Eastern Conference team. They'll fight for that tenth seed and move on. Let's talk about the disparity, though, because this is the big talking point for probably about a week now here. Basically, the plus minus and eyeballs quite frankly have shown that the bench is a huge plus the starting lineup is a huge negative. Rob, is there any specific thing going on there that's leading to that as a specific players or is this just I don't know what's going on there? Well, I think this is where those two conversations come together that was outlined. There's the defense not holding up this season. There's the starter's not holding up this season. These are one and the same in a lot of ways. And it's a case where guys like us are on podcasts or writing articles about how, oh, this offense first team needs to level out, get more defense. This defense first team needs to get more scores. It kind of feels like they zagged a little too hard in their starting lineup toward trying to get offensive talent, but they haven't actually gotten the benefit of that offensive talent. Like Kemba has not delivered in the way that he needs to, which puts a lot of pressure on Evan four and a all of a sudden. So if those guys aren't scoring for you, we know they're not defending for you. And that's where that opening 5 against the best players in the NBA just has not been able to stop anybody. Well, here's my question because Kemba among all of the starting players has been the biggest negative. He's a -12.4 net rating. I think it's worse among all of the regulars on the Knicks. Is it as simple as just demoting Kemba either to the bench or maybe even to just like spot duty? Maybe to third point guard, dude, because it's not like they don't have options. Derrick Rose didn't play last night against the Lakers, but he does have a stabilizing effect for this team. Can he be in the starting lineup and then can a menu quickly come off the bench or can quickly start and rose still come off the bench? I don't know, I feel like there's still a move here before we can say that this unit as in a whole, all 5 parts of this is the problem. I think there might be a move here with a different coach, but he likes his old guys. He's gonna play the proven vets. He's not gonna start Emmanuel quickly over kimber walker. It'll be a cold day in hell before that happened, right? And so I don't think the fixes are there and then of course there's his just devotion to always playing a traditional big man, right? You never gonna get Randall at the 5. So maybe if Randall was playing around a lot more spacing him not making those really tough shots that he made all of last season wouldn't be such a problem, but I don't see tibbs changing the way that he plays. They're going to play too big at all times, and they're going to play the vets. The only caveat to that is that the only thing that Tom thibodeau loves more than a veteran is a veteran named Derrick Rose. And so you could quickly judge just based off last season. How long it took for quickly to even get consistent minutes? Right. Crazy. Crazy. And they brought in Derek rose as competition for those minutes mid season. I could see rose getting that promotion at some point, but I think this is where it gets a little sticky politically speaking. With a veteran guy with a proven guy, 20 games into a season, I think it would be a hard sell to pull that plug. Unless you're ready to just cut bait on that relationship. But I think they're going to need Kemba in some capacity. And I think they're going to need to play a wait and see a longer game to see if maybe something with the starting lineup can come together. Yeah, and Kemba did leave money on the table, got out of his deal with the thunder specifically to come to the next. He signed a relatively bargain deal, so I wonder if there was some sort of agreement made. But I guess it's a good way to talk about the other guys in this starting unit because as waz kind of alluded to, RJ Barrett has just been brutal. It seemed like he was ready to turn the corner. He had like three really good games where it's just like 35 against the pelicans. That was nice. We found out that maybe it was just like the competition there because over his past 9 he's shooting about 30% from the floor. I'm still decent volume on 13 shots of game. So he's still getting fed, but he's just not shooting well enough. Do we think, I don't know, do we think that there's something up with his shot? Do we think it was just fool's gold? This like the flashes we've seen for him, the season and maybe even last season. What do we think? I mean, you follow guys that are covering the team like.

"You know, I don't know what's gonna happen with this team. I'm gonna do a video this week on them. So I'm doing it on Monday or Tuesday. And you know, we have to look at how it's gonna work. Like they did improve a little bit, but why don't I wait, where's fournier? I'm looking at I'm on ref. That's weird. They didn't put them, why don't I see fournier on their hilarious? I'm sorry, gosh. So fournier is going to be interesting upgrade. He's one of the other guys who in the regular season can really help you. I don't know what happens in the playoffs. Honestly with him. But he is solid and then, you know, they bring in Kemba, they signed Derek rose. You're right. It's a weird lineup, mishmash together. And they had you guys at the end of the beginning of their careers. So I have promising young players, but with all the veteran signings they had, it's like, they're not going to how are they going to get any playing time? Right. And that's Tim's MO. He doesn't like to play the young guys. Anyway, so like a manual quickly who I really, really like and things should be a lead guard. You know, he's gonna get these limits. Minutes limited by both kimba and Derek rose, although kimba is, you know, I hate to say it. He breaks down a lot and I don't necessarily think he's going to make it through even though I generally try to ignore and assume people are going to be healthy with candidates tough up after the last several years. I'll be talking like, what do we have from him? Is that, you know, it fits and starts. Maybe he's going to be solid. I don't know. I'm still not white sold. And then you have RJ Barrett who he seems to be on that track and they're piping him to be the next great guard out of New York. But anyone sold on this?.

"To the embassy. We're joined right now on the Goodyear Hotline, By Alan HAHN MSG Network Nick's analyst, co host of Barton, Hot also with Cage's in the morning. Those air early warnings, Alan, How's your body clock doing right now? Yeah, It's been great tag doing Nick games at night and then waking up to do in the morning show and dealing with Keyshawn and his Lakers on any time the Knicks win. He forgets that there was an NBA game, but if they lose all of a sudden, we gotta get a full breakdown. So there's that on top of the anxiety, of course of the Knicks in the playoffs for the first time in eight years. But, you know, I mean, I guess I can sleep at some other point, but it's been a lot of fun, though. I spent a lot of fun. No, it's no good. You did a great job, great toe to listen to a little bit. So Allen, speaking of the of the Knicks, Get to the playoffs. They get that first win, treated like an NBA championship out of the streets, even though they had home court stolen from them, but what they feel like they've been kind of a mess the last game Or two. What do you see from them? First of all, I like the Loki shade you just through there about how they're celebrating the first playoff win out the streets, even though their day they already lost home court advantage. I mean, what a backhanded slap! Hey, Welcome to the show. Your team sucks like a like this is the first playoff win in eight years. You give these people a break like they had a blast in the building. It was also coming out of pandemic. We're all together again. It's family as fans. So, Yeah, Okay. Maybe they went a little over the top seventh Heaven on a Wednesday night, but it is New York City. With that being said, Yeah, the team socks like they're in a mess Right now. It's just they're nothing what they look like during the regular season. Mainly because defense was their staple, and they can't stop a nosebleed. They can't stop Trey young at all in the pick and roll. They struggling with it, And that's been maddening Tow watch, but more maddening is There's their star player this year. Julius Randle can't make a shot and you could credit a lot of defense and they they've been throwing length Adam, which he struggles with, but we said this the other night, and it bears repeating. With Derrick Rose is doing in this series shows you what a former M V P is all about, Well Julius Randle is doing in this series shows you what the difference mean M v P and most improved player that's that's the difference, you know, and I think Julius is going to start feeling the heat. Speaking in New York, If you know if he comes out of this series, shooting the way he's shooting under 30% now at this point He's got to get it done, and it's got to start today or all the good feelings that he was with rose petals and everything else about this year. That's gonna go away quickly. I'm fascinated by this Knicks fan beef with Trey Young and just how it continues to escalate to talk about involving. It just feels like it's It's reached a different level. Is this gonna be something we've seen for years to come? Sort of this beef between Trey Young and the Nixon? I mean, what do you think about that? Yeah. I mean, I think because he's responding to it. I'm sure it'll always now be a thing whenever he comes to the garden. Uh, you know, look, you put his finger up overs overs mouth after making that runner after Game one, You know, tell anybody should let me tell you some New York is going to be shushed. Don't tell us their shushed. The last thing we can do it to you guys can tell. So you know that that that that in itself that moment that shot him doing that. Yes, the chanting part. Listen, if I can know the spitting thing that's not acceptable. We all know that That's not acceptable. That idiot that did that. You know, that's not really what it's about. I'm glad he got banned, thrown out. Never come back again, not a season ticket holder but still won't be back in the building and shouldn't be. With all the other stuff. I mean, that's that's basketball like that's fun. We liked that stuff. And you know if he becomes this era's general version of Reggie Miller, you know that wrong with that, you know, we love our heroes. But we love villains, too. And so it's kind of fun. These playing along with it. On. And if he breaks hearts with Syria's like he's been doing already. Yeah, I could see his next visit to the Garden next season having some noise Alan Hahn, MSG Network, Nick's analyst, co host of Barton Han. And also with K. J Z joining us here Sunday morning. That shit Mart Metcalfe on ESPN radio back to Julius Randle here. I know they've said Hey, we just need him to be Julius. We just need to unlock him a little bit. What? What are the Hawks doing? What is he not doing? What needs to change here? A little of both might be in his head. You know that could happen. Game one. You could just see the first couple of shots were good looks for him and they just were, you know, off to the left a little bit like he just wasn't calibrated was a week off between games for him. And maybe he got a rhythm. So you you know, you gave it a pass, but You know, the Hawks change what they were doing. They had to have its 37 a game against them in the regular season. He was he torched John Collins. I mean, torched him. He scored more points against John Collins and any other player in the league this season. So you know they had to change something. And they did is that a DeAndre hunters guarding him, which he's got more length. He's a better defender and B When Collins is guarding him, Clint Capela is somewhere nearby. Always making sure there's a wall to be put up. Danilo Culinary actually off the bench has done a fantastic job against him, and he's not known to be a defender. But he's 6 10 with long arms, and Randall is not an explosive player. He's a guy that needs space and You know he can create space with size and strength. But he's not a guy that really elevates get over defense. He is struggling against the length they're putting against him and the pressure and they're taking away. His first pass, which normally is Reggie Bullock, who's been become a fantastic three point shooter. So that in a nutshell. What they're doing, how they stop it or how they figure it out. They've had They've had some days off to figure it out. They couldn't for Game three. They had one day off before Game four. I'd want to see what they try to do in this game to get him going. With the Knicks basically building the pro version of the Kentucky Wildcats and all the former guys. There has been a lot of buzz about Carlin, Carlin, many towns and Devin Booker. In your opinion. How many stars does this team need to add before? They're legit contender? Definitely. Yeah, it is a great question. They definitely need Another right? Like they definitely need us. Another guy? No, Derek Rose is later in his career. But that's what he showed you late in..

"Or wherever you get your podcasts. Good morning boomer. Our you tired but You know i'm a little down. There's no question about it. But i'm not gonna let it take me down because man. That was an awesome game last night. That was an awesome game. I knows what we almost had to try factor because the yankees you know beat the race. They did what they had to do. A little wiser was great. Jordan montgomery was great and chapman comes in close the door. There you go. you have over there. The mets have You know ninth inning comeback. Which was awesome in itself and marcus. Stroman was great yesterday. And i know he didn't want to come out of the game. Of course anybody that is competitive and wants to stay in the game. He wanted to stay in the game. There's no question about it. But they picked them up hitting get a loss he pitched e pitched really well and they got key hits and albert more out junior junior running into centerfield told me all i need to know about this team now this team as balls to the wall. I don't care what you say so. We almost had to try but last night. And here's the too frustrating things for me. From last night's lakers knick game number one was the final shot of regulation. So i thought julius was going to get the ball spot up. Just hit a jump shot. He'd been hitting all night sure and he tried to do the. Derek rose floater. For whatever reason that's his that's his intuition that's as basketball. Iq that's what he thought he was doing. And we almost want it right there and it would have been unbelievable. Had that ball gun in had that ball gun and you would have heard nick fans screaming from montauk the way down to the jersey shore. Sure i mean it would have been unbelievable okay. So now we're going into overtime. They're losing in overtime but they fight back because they fight back a fightback and all right. So i feel like tiptoes was gonna come up with some play at the end of the game and we're going to get a wide open shot. We have plenty of time is no issues and unfortunately the ball ends up in. Rj barrett's hands. Who had a terrible last night. And he has to take almost a half quarter when in actuality. They didn't have to do that. But you could see that. The the lakers extended their defense. And and you're right. I do believe that they miss quickly. And neil aquinas out there. It's a big shot. There's no question about that but that game last night had we won the game last night we would have come in. There has been high five and everybody would have been jacked up and i know that there's disappointment and frustration. I gotta tell you that team watching that game last night. That was that was hockey on hardwood. last night. That was now. I know why lebron james wanna planet game because it was going to be everybody who's going to get knocked guys. Were going after the ball. Both teams plan hard. I mean that you got your money's worth if you're spike lean you spend.
