"We saved to be very intuitive about it. There was never like a calendar of like this is my year. This is your year. So and maybe that's the issue we aren't big planners that way. So there is never you know like a grand plan for how it was all going to go. It was I think fear has always been a big motivator. Time to pitch the next thing or really time to say, yes to the next thing like with the ghost writing projects, there is a lot of saying no to stuff until it just became more important to say yes. There are a lot of ghost written Liz Wilde books out there I know about the one that has our name on it. But how many others are the ones that you're names? No were attached to them. Others. I go through Kirsten GILLIBRAND MEMOIR I've done a couple of athletes. There aren't a ton of them, but there were enough in it's easier way to make some money. You know it's quicker per word than the magazine stuff. Is it your preference that your name be associated with it or not be associated with it or is it case by case? You think it's case by case I think there's a strong argument for both of you. WanNa raise something really fast. Maybe you don't want your name on it. I don't know I seem to be somebody without a lot of hard and fast rules for my life. Little disturbing. Maybe we can fix that right now I always was one of the things that I would see your stories and just say Oh while she's written about that. She's written about that about that and you seem to be able to tackle any topic. Well I. think that's a great pleasure. Freelancing is that you can just follow what you're interested in and you're not locked into anything. So I think I also always felt like that was a perk that I could pitch what I was interested in, and if you really listen to people and if you are interested in it. Then I think you can always write something good if you work hard and was there did you ever find there was a through line in the stories that you you ended up choosing that? Did you feel like you're looking for something in any in choosing particular stories? You know. Than looking for something globally I feel like I would. Look for the point of connection in the story like where am I in this story? Why was I drawn to this story like I think that? I would be drawn to like this guy kayaked across the Atlantic three times. Then there would be something that was drawn to him. And I would often try to sort of dig myself or wet that was, and then try to make that central in the peace in some way of just like what do I in particular have to bring to this topic. And in some ways I think all this came from an experienced really in my career where I pitched a book about some guy is building a private spaceship in the Mojave desert and it was a great book and I got a book contract for it but it was not a great book for me I didn't really connect with them and I think it was this major lesson that just because something is a good topic doesn't mean it's a good topic for you is a particular writer necessarily, and then I think I became committed to finding that in my stories. Or backing away from them. So I think less than I was looking for something globally I was looking for where I really related to it like with the go ships story, I wrote I wound up. Thinking a lot about parental grief and what it meant to be apparent which wasn't the obvious. Place to combat that story from but that's where my heart really was. And, that story, it's weird to say that's one of my favorite stories of the last year since it's just a brutal Rita's rereading again last nights it just it has momentum towards a place that you know is awful and then it. Passes beyond that. But I guess for people who don't remember don't aren't familiar maybe just recap what the ghost ship fire was. So there is this warehouse party thirty, six people died, and there was a huge need in the bay area to have accountability for this to do something with all of the grief and two people were arrested. There is an older Guy Derek Meena and a younger guy named Max Harris and I wound up writing the profile. Mostly about Max Harris he was charged with thirty six counts of manslaughter. Killing his friends and. I found that predicament so unbearable to even think about it somehow that's the angle I came to the story from just and then I sort of followed him. I, spent a lot of time interviewing him in Santa Rita jail and the story Rayon before the trial but then I went to the trial ended up getting acquitted. It seemed like a I mean that's a hard story to tell because you know that there's this grief on the other side like you said, the parental grief, the people who had lost their kids feature prominently. They obviously want answers and did you going into a story like that? Do you feel like you need to kind of decide where you stand before you get into it or that you figure that out as you go along or you don't want it to to kind of indicate where you stand. I didn't want to figure out where I stood per se before I started reporting it and I also felt like it wasn't my job to be. The Voice of Justice exactly. I felt like it was my job to try to. Chronicle, what happened and I also knew going in I was gonNA fail you know there was too much loss there were too many people who died. Every one of those lives could have been the subject of profile and I heard from a lot of families after who were upset which I knew was going to happen about that choice to focus on one of the defendants who live. Instead of somebody who died and that was really painful but I didn't feel like. I came out at knowing I wanted to tell this one story that I wanted to stay close to Max Harris more than I, came to it. Knowing where I wanted the story to land I mean he I think from the national press he was not a sympathetic figure but he sort of he does come through as an extremely sympathetic figure in the story you said it was painful to hear from the parents you how long do they stick with you?.

In front of your billion dollar company. It was his ideas. Right. It was his his leadership style. Yeah. No. But allowed to smoke weed. I want to. I if I'm if you're looking for my my money the money I've worked my whole life to invest in. I don't wanna see you on a talk show getting. Hi, sorry. I mean, why why if he was drinking a beer when you have a bad PR? Why? Well, I see I see what you're trying to save. Like, you know, literally saying it. No. Well for starters. Marijuana is still classified under federal law as illegal, and I'm not saying that what you're saying. It's it's a bad PR move. I want my CEO to be a guy that that show stability. And and and and a vision that is that is not this vision of you can't smoke weed on the Joe Rogan experience podcast a little bit of that. And see sounds like. Ended up up a little bit about how bad this is. I don't think so marijuana. Tobacco. Okay. So it's like posh plot tobacco. Never have that. Yeah. I think I tried one ones come on, man. Blunt. Stockholder's right. Okay. The people get upset at you. If you do certain things. Tobacco and marijuana in there. Okay. And and we gotta stop because they do drop the f bomb a couple of times. I never got to be careful that must conceded. He has more important things on his plate. Right now than than some of the problems that are facing him. He's he's got a problem with the the SEC for, you know, announcing whole private privatization deal. I'm just telling you that running a company like that a competitive company that he's you know, you got you got Amazon trying to do the same things. He is in space. And and he he wants to he wants to get more money to do billion dollar projects in space. I don't know why. But that's his thing. But I'm not gonna give this guy money when he goes on Joe Rogan show. I like Joe Rogan know, but I just don't I'm so surprised you're taking this position. I'm so surprised for somebody that, you know, likes your edibles and all this kind of stuff not leading a fortune five hundred you can still smoke weed is my point no kids still can but going on this show and doing it and allowing pictures looking like your half baked and you can barely stay aware is he's not he's not your point. But you're so wrong. I'm not wrong. Maybe people in high stress jobs should smoke weed to calm down maybe people in high stress jobless in my point. You're talking about the weed. I'm talking about where and how he's doing it. I'd cast it's videotaped. And it's and we watch live in this era where everything's videotapes. And I get that. I just don't think you know, what make tesla successful. I'll still give you my money still Landau rockets back on the water, not destroy. I'll still give you my money. That's performance. You smoke weed on the Joe Rogan experience. I'm not worried about on you that corporate culture, even tesla or doesn't matter if you decide to go, and and and and file to be a publicly traded corporation, and you ask other people to give you your money there. There's a there's a different anticipation. Your your actions in the way, you should behave. You know, who I think has money Elon mosque. So I think he can look at everyone and be like this is what I'm gonna do not if not if you unless he wants to put all his money into it. Then you're right. It can do whatever he wants. But he's not if he goes public. I mean, if he if he goes private is private Bo, he goes private, it's even more. I mean, obviously have more freedom when your private, you know, because you don't have to answer those. But I you know, if I was his finance people. I would say this was the dumb move. Maybe I don't think it's that big of a deal at who's right here. This was a dumb. I man, Ed. Well, I think that we have a history of creative people smoking weed. Yes. Jobs in the early days smoke weed, look what he came up with. We have to separate. I just got to make a point the two had nothing to do with each other. Okay. Right. Well, what did you say? I'm annoying for smoking pot and coming up with the thing anybody can do anything creative smoking pot. I'm not saying that's another argument. But it which is actually my argument to but. No. But the idea I'm sorry. Go ahead. He brings this. Craze save your maybe publicizing, it isn't the best corporate move. But you have to let creative innovative people. Do these sources things for them to innovate. There you go. Yeah. But let me just goes Jeff Bezos has a similar company. I like his managing style a lot better. I like the fact that he's kind of you know, he's kind of got an interesting personality. He's out there says some provocative things, but he doesn't go on some guys talk show smoking a blunt that he didn't even know what it was and sticking. World. God. I'm sorry. Ed, Nikki, Jeremy crazy, man. Elon Musk has more of an eccentric creative person than Jeff Bezos. They're a little different. But I think, you know, don't judge them too harshly because you know, he does come up with great ideas. If stopping smoking weed is going to stifle, those ideas, you kill the goose that lays if my if my guy that does my investments called me and said, what do you think at tesla I'd say put it on Goldman Sachs because at least I know what those guys are up to Goldman Sachs says we're gonna make you money Tessa says I'm gonna make money, but I I'm going to go blow joint, so. Yeah. Tesla's on sale by so it is on sale. And there's reason thank you. Appreciate it. Moped joints that devil lead. I'm just saying that's how you sound man. I'm just telling you it has nothing to do with weed. It's the fact that he's smoking it on a talk show and. Who is this man? And then rogue is gone. It's blonde it's got tobacco. And we didn't it's okay. I'll smoke it. Then that's really, that's smart smoking. Some you don't know. What's in it? I'm sure Joe Rogan isn't trainer? Rufi Elon Musk on his podcast.
