Phil Jackson blames Carmelo Anthony for the downfall of the Knicks

"Phil. Jackson was on a podcast with kobe. Carl carl's son. And he blamed the knicks failures during his tenure. There on carmelo anthony's lack of leadership. Is this a big deal or no deal. Well he didn't just blame it on. Carmelo anthony lack of leadership. He blamed it on everyone but himself. He blamed it on the new york media. He blamed carmelo anthony. He blamed derek fisher. Although there fisher. Does you know we love fisher on here. But he does deserve that one but he blamed on like five different people anyone but him he said. I should have coached the team but physically couldn't do it from a health perspective. I mean dog. You know what. I mean like the greatest coach of all time just because you weren't a good gm. We're not all good at everything. So i would say big deal only because he just like let it out on everybody but himself i feel like i got a glimpse into who he is as a coach to like. I always wondered if he fully appreciated how blessed he was to coach the men that he coached and to me. I'm not saying this is definitive but for me when you show an inability to take responsibilities for your thoughts right that suggest you have an ability to take too much credit for your successes correct. And so when. I am that quote i was like. I knew you didn't think that you were lucky to get jordan. Utah jazz looking to have you

LeBron becomes all-time leader in playoff wins

"All tonight. LeBron at another milestone to your resume. Passing Derek Fisher becoming the NBA's all time leader in a playoff wins. I know you have said time and time again, you'll reflect on those milestones later, but to play at the level you're playing at and achieve that milestone in your 17. What does that say about what we're trying to accomplish? It says that I played with a lot of great teams says that I played a lot of great teammates, great coaches in Cleveland in Miami and now here in Los Angeles, you don't get those wins without your teammates so on the coaching staff that prepares and do all the preparation Behind the scenes video coordinators, the guys who helped rebound the basketballs force assistant coaches that trainers the athletic staff. So on so on, so it doesn't happen without the supporting cast and a swell. I'm able to stay here with this achievement, but it's all about the three organizations. I've been with calves, the heat and now the Lakers because without them, I wouldn't be in this position. Speaking of the way you're supporting cast played tonight. Defensively, particularly in that second half. What did you guys find that allowed you to lock into Rockets offense. We know in the first half going into the half time that we didn't play our best defensively. We allowed him to get into the lane without contest. We lost him to hit some threes. What I'll contest are rotations was slow. So when we went to the locker room, we watched a film. And we had conversation right away on what we can do in the second half to get better and be better, and we was able to transfer it into the second half of the last thing I'll ask you about. I know Coach Vogel keeps on telling us That he is going to use the memory of Kobe Bryant to fuel this playoff run and continue to talk to the team about it. How have you channeled that to motivate you through this run through the postseason in this most unique environment, Then today, we just all we make him and his family proud, and that's all it's about Anybody's ever step foot and put on the Lakers jersey we hoped would make them proud as well from Kobe all the way down to everybody's ever played in Los Angeles have been a part of Los Angeles Lakers organization. LeBron becomes all-time leader in playoff wins

"If you remember back to Sunday, Game two of the Western Conference finals. Lakers gave up 41 points in the third quarter before they were able to clamp down defensively, allowing the Rockets to score just 17 in that fourth quarter. Get on Tuesday. It would be a strong fourth quarter. That proves to be the difference for Ella. LeBron James wind up having a huge first half 29 points, but the Lakers were actually trailing at the break. L. A would hold the Rockets to just 18 points in the third. Turning things up defensively, one of the best defensive teams all year that turned it up the Rockets to 22% shooting in the second half. There's another turnover. Anthony Davis, with the steal handed back to Gordon, Front left drives past LeBron layup blocked by James from behind LeBron James with a great block. Gordon thought he was buying me ran down from the back. Another block for James on a runner by harden LeBron James, with two monster blocks 54 Covington to Rivers Wing left us with a rim up on underway Blood by James and the stick that won't count. It comes after the red light was lit. And LeBron with three monster blocks in the corner. We're tied going before the difference in this one. It was a 64 point first half With rockets. Scored 33 points in the first quarter. 31 in the second But just 38 points total. In the second half of the Lakers. Clamping down on defense would also Their foot on the accelerator on offense. Morris swinging Rondo opened three Ling right, Got another one playoff. Rondo is here tonight in Game three. Four point lead for the Los Angeles Lakers. That's 12 points. Ferrando as a timeout is called by Mike D'Antoni governs and threw it away. Trying to find a friend on the left sideline. Rondo working right side before with Davis. Hi, Lobb. Davis caught way right off the jab. Step shoots for two and dropped it in 26 15 for Anthony Davis early, but it's a dagger a little bag. Now, with a minute to play Rondo around the angle Street left side of the room past the diving Kuzma catches and lays it in over the front iron and the Rockets have a look to him that they know they're probably done with under a minute to play, and the short answer would be Yes, The rockets were done at that point. The game was here on ESPN radio Lakers would close it out when it by 10 1 12 102 Lakers taking a 21 Siri's lead Lakers out of 21 to 8. Run. To start the fourth quarter after as we heard, the game was tied heading to the fourth LeBron James 162nd career playoff victory. That's the most all time he spoke with TNT, do what it takes to win both the defense and I know I say that a lot, but it was just the truth. My teammates looks for me to do a little bit of everything, and tonight was another opportunity for me to help and I was happy. I was able to come through for us tonight. LeBron at another milestone to your resume, passing Derek Fisher becoming the NBA's all time leader in a playoff wins. I know you have said time and time again, you'll reflect on those milestones later. To play at the level you're playing at and achieve that milestone in your 17. The guys will help rebound the basketballs force assistant coaches that trainers the athletic staff on its own. So it doesn't happen without the support of castes. And it's why I'm able to stay here with this achievement. But it's all about the three organizations. I've been with calves, the heat and not the Lakers. It means the tradition here and it's our responsibility when loser draw toe hold out without most responsibility and utmost respect, and, you know, doctor Dr Buss will want as well. Loser draw. This one turned out to be a win for the Lakers by 10. They take a 21 Siri's lead, LeBron finishing with 36 points, 29 of which came in the first half. You heard him touch on the defensive adjustments that the Lakers made at halftime. As well. "Like how did he support you during those years? Did I think some of the stuff that gets a lot of things can get lost and we in the media miss out on a lot of things even when we're there every day but like I think that we we see the intensity in the competitiveness and the single-mindedness and you think about Kobe being all about Kobe but I know that sometimes he led a very harsh approach and sometimes he could put his arm around guys to for you guys like and again you always there was always this feeling like is going to hold onto this spot here? What was Kobe Lake and just in terms of supporting you during that time even even as he's trying to lift himself up? Yeah no I think like I was saying. I think you know there wasn't a direct competition between the two but I think he he never tried to make it feel that way like he was superior to me and even like in our first year. I was playing. Maybe more minutes per game to start rookie season. Colby wars and then by the end of the regular season and then into the playoffs against the jazz there was a there was a change and you had this started figure out. Well how can we get koby minutes because this young man is really good so they've got pulled on their. We basically were playing Kobe kind of like being like backup point guard Taco but even during those early years where you know. We went from ten minutes to them called minutes in the playoffs. You know coming back our second year like we used to just really relish practice in terms of like going up against Roy Jones and you know and then Robert Ory came in and whoever was in the first group like we we wanted to literally destroyed them every day in practice just to like it was his motivating for us not that we did destroy them every day but we we liked the challenge that we started was our responsibility to push them and make them better begin. Practicing against those all star players made us better so when we will coming into the game in ninety seven. Ninety eight like we felt like we were starters Which is what ended up happening basing all year ninety nine for both of us. Yeah there were times. I don't know exactly how to frame as there were times where I felt like Kobe was so single minded about the game that I thought it. Obviously it made meet some relationships tougher Including with us in the media for some time. They're like the early Kobe that I knew the first few years was really warm. And engaging and there's a time there were he pushed away for a while he was growing up before is obviously he's got his own. Life is evolving as a person as a player. But there were times. I I did worry man. This kid is so consumed by the game. He's so consumed by wanting to be great. I wonder if it's coming at the expense of other things and you know later. When we see his his family grow you see that he he did manage to find the balance but I. I wonder as as a friend. Did you worry at times that the the single minded focus on being great in the NBA? Was maybe at the expense of some of the personal stuff. I think it's fair to still say that there were costs and sacrifices and things that lost out on which I think he best spoke to himself. You know that Anywhere from my smaller than life experience. Compared to here's you know. Guess what this is in some ways. If you really want to be great at even Lebron also found an amazing balance. In terms of life than just professional accomplishments on the court family business et CETERA. But he's still sacrificing a lot. Sometimes even more you know our kids go to the same school. He can't drop Brownie off their school and Bryce school every day and it just doesn't work so for Kobe. Thank you it. Was you know he gave up a lot for sure? No question about it and there was concern that I have in times and I'm sure others did as well that can't be. You can't go after this hard every day. Because you're GONNA run a push everybody away that you need in order to accomplish the goals that you're trying to accomplish. Anyway you know in order you to be regarded as one of the greatest to ever do this. You know we have to win on a certain level and we can't do that if we're not you know we don't feel like we value each other a certain way and so those were the days that were really hard but you know. I think that's also part of leadership and you know people don't always like the leader because you know they have to say and do days that others won't and you know I think a Lotta does for us where we have felt that way but I think you know from my perspective even though I had a different leadership style I still gave myself as a leader in again. That's what allowed. He and I have a different type of relationship that could weather the storm in the frustrations and the concern. Did you ever try to moderate a little bit like dude? Kobe just like tone it down by five percent. Maybe were all the time all the time we we talk all the time about some of those things where there's leadership style for. You know things on the court as such like I mean I remember one conversation we had and this was the second integration of our teams with POW Andrew Bynum and who was trying to give me. They're like look to shoot the ball more so we would talk on the on the bus and on plane rides and sexual and finally. I was like dude. I don't think you realize like monetize. You shoot the ball. If I if I can't on the court and to like their shots that I couldn't take but I pass up on and you empower would no longer rebound try to help us and take a role so good screen big. Don't work that way and if you don't take care of your bigs they stopped playing for you so and we used to literally have a debate over there. He would. He would understand what I was saying but for him that like. They're still with. He did the same day just a different way like there were. I think he not because I said it was just overtime. You really learn how to make sure that the guys were getting days that they needed and and realizing that would actually help them care. Help Him and and I think that's what he really started to figure out as as just a room you know. Yeah no I remember. He said once you know probably said it more than once but I trust my teammates. I trust myself more like that was that was kind of the epitome of Moby and understood it. 'cause LIKE OKAY. If you've got that much talent everybody who's had that kind of scoring towns in this league has had some burden and some struggled to try to figure out the right balance and so in that respect he wasn't that different from a lot of other guys and we still struggling with that in this league off the court when you guys are just you know hanging out shooting the breeze. What was what else was interesting to Kobe? What did you guys talk about that? That was not basketball. Aw I mean he was in the soccer you know before it became a bigger interest to here in the United States So whatever touching you talk about that. I'm not played a little bit as a kid but he was much more. You know in tune with the soccer world and then he's you know he's a ragged deputy eagles fan. And you know. I've been a cowboys fan or Gary. Very Long Time and so you know we. We give each other a hard time you know. I wasn't eagles benefits and division. So we talk a little bit of football and then you know as our kids got older you know that kind of became you know really December piece of a lot of conversations as well. No 'cause they're really what I think about starting to drive you know if your life and you know certain things trying to do because we have these responsibilities in conjunction with that we love to lie and So in some ways like we there were certain days you wanted to do and an exhibit on the court you know because you'll damage world everyone Barbara McDonald here hosted the brand new podcast from h down the hill the Delphi murders in February of two thousand seventeen Abigail Williams and liberty. "I would probably focus more on clay. Why? Because from what I can gather. And this is what I would hope to build here in LA on the women's right? Is that like clay has built what the Golden State Warriors are exactly like you don't just Bryant with sudden fall in love with the new guy. Right. Is great as he is. I think you reward Klay Thompson for what he has helped build and establish. And then the the. The person has kind of needing to figure out how how does he fit into? What was there when he showed up in terms of Kevin it's more his responsibility to find a number or a contract that will work with these other guys being re-signed cetera. So that's me. But these are these are legit questions. I ask you all this because this plays into your acumen as a head coach, whether it'd be for the Knicks or for the sparks people wanna know how you think how you how you feel about certain players and their contributions. And and quite frankly painting with broader strokes, like the bigger picture of what you wanna do for a team that has some really the players. But you know, there there are times when you gotta make tough decisions. Like, you're not gonna be able to please everybody. That's correct. You got to comes with it. I mean, like, for example, there's Cambay JR. More to two players WNBA are expressing a desire to find a new home and those tough decisions for us to have to make or Minnesota. LA's? I'm trying to tell me don't know that I would love I would love to speaker that out wanted to greatest ever do it. But yes, these are tough decisions to to have to make in. And if you do get a phone call who are you willing to have a conversation about giving up? We have great players on Iraq. I wouldn't want to give up anybody. But when he's talking about more like certain players, it's hard to ignore their greatness and say, no, we don't wanna do it. Do you discuss this? I'm here. Let me drop some him cranks numbers. Do you need me to crunch? Penny. Penny penny. No, I trust her. Yes. Some rain is the show for drew. Visit sure I will say this before we go. Thank you so much. So hopefully, we'll see you after the season is over with a chip perhaps. Can I say that is to play? I don't mind putting it in the universe speak into existence. Head coach of the sparks his name is Derek Fisher. He five-time NBA champion one of my neighbor teams. I don't have you heard like, thank you so much. Shade it to you next time. I hope you enjoyed this dish. It'd be honest Fisher. He was key. I appreciate it. And guess what? I I wish him the best. "Yes, we do. Yeah. I mean, in my opinion in terms of the long term future of the Lakers. I would say, yes. And I think that we just celebrated Dr buses life dot the bus night at the staple center a couple of nights ago and. It's a move. He would make because doc was always thinking about. You know, not just a great one that he has now. But who's next who's going to carry the brand forward after Aideed magic is done? You know after shack is gone after Kobe who's next after LeBron has done. I think that you know, there are a lot of great players in the league blood. You know, if they can make that happen. Everybody gotta go. I'm saying I'm saying. My name's LeBron. I'm I'm on a train table. Is that what you're suggesting? I I'm kissing about that who would you keep if he could keep one which one would you keep? Man. These are questions, I think how who's miss separated himself. As a guy that understands how to play with LeBron or without the bride and and. A couple of other guys are still trying to figure that out. So I if if you can hold on the couch. I thank you do. But I don't know if that's going to be possible developments probably get everything to give up. Anthony Davis Kouzmin because he so good. Yeah. Right. And that's the cursor gift and the curse. Kevin durant? It's turn our attention there. Because I'm looking at this free agency class, and you've got some superstars see we have some possibility of some superstars, right? If you had a choice. To take Klay Thompson or Kevin Durant. In terms of and I'm not referring to Lakers. But if in terms of your the Golden State, you're going say warriors, you've got this great team. What would you focus on? Would you? Keep clay. Or would you? Or would you gamble that? Clay would stay for less money and focus on Kevin Durant..

"So he switched and saved a bunch. So it all worked out we talked about Coby often everyone is question. I don't know why do it. But I had to cover your m j who's better? Obvio- even go back to what we are. Obviously by. Because I've played thirteen seasons with Cogan, and I got to watch Michael for thirteen years and then play against him for a few. I mean, obviously for me Koby ranks above anybody. Because like I won with him. We went to war together. Like like, I can't choose somebody that saved my life on the battlefield many times. I put some truth Sarah, Mike in your your vein. And I was like you're not Derek Fisher play with Kobe. We'll juicing. Then might give Michael more of an edge. Like if it was purely objective because I feel like Michael was like the original that like Kobe was able to study and learn in like take some of his his information on his hard drive and get his codes and all his information and. And, you know, build a new system off of his so I feel like Michael would then get the edge. If it was just okay here. Here's a more fair question. I had Jackie MAC on McMullan. And she, and we we came up with the idea of situational goats. It's she said, it's depending on what you want. She said if you if you want someone in her and she's from Boston. So if he wants to win the last minute take a shot, she's given it Tillery bird. If you want someone to be a dog is between 'em, Jay and Kobe and in terms of the most dominant athletic that she seen. She said it's the prime. So if you had to go top five doing mount afri- is is where does LeBron go is even greatest player of all time in your opinion. He he for me in the last two three seasons. He's gone from outside of the top five to like tie for fifth and working his way up. Okay. So you're not giving them one right now. Because he said he was go. He knew. Who should he should think? Yes. That's the great ones. Always. I think I'm yeah. Great. And so I think that LeBron is to me working his way up the ladder, the debility to sustain excellent performances so hard to difficult and he just keeps doing it. Unfortunately, he's injured now. But to see the way moving up to all time scoring list. Okay. Without really ga- Abana guy tries to score. So once in J Kobe LeBron. Okay. I'll go. Yeah. MJ today. I will go j Koby the bra, okay? Today today at this time because forty PM Michael's book is written and done as a player care Kobi's book as a players written from we can judge those the bras unfinished. So depending on what happens over these next couple years. He could literally slide his way up to the top. Now, some people would like to leave guy like Kareem, and yeah, I don't understand why they get left completely out of the country. Jake and magic why you pause. No, no. Yesterday. I had a conversation with somebody about why magic is never on that list loser. Now, we're talking about Magic Johnson is ever on this list. We're confused as well. And so it, you know, every day of the week. It'll be different Asser for mostly LeBron is a Laker. Will he win a chip as a Laker? Yes. As the team is currently constructed. How far will they go this season? No, Anthony Davis trade. No, nothing. No nothing roster. Yes. Possibly conference finals because if you can stay away from the warriors until then they have a chance who do you trade before February seventh which is the trade deadline on this team to get Anthony Davis is everybody on the table if they named that LeBron. "Hey, everybody. Welcome to new edition of the honest. So I'm excited. Five time champion, Derek Fisher here with us as we know. I don't know if I've shared that with you guys I am liquor fan. I don't know if you've heard this just in Oregon news, look. To have you on the show? Yes. But most importantly, we know who you are. And what you've accomplished you coached in the league you now have a new role. Let's talk about that. He is the new head coach of the Los Angeles sparks right across the street where you guys play from where we are filming this tell me about how that all came about years in the making honesty, I think having an appreciation and the love and support for the women's game for many many years. I was reading an article Kevin net was commenting about how Don Staley impacted him as a player inspired, by the way. She led him played the game, and I had a very similar experience. And so I've always watched the game supported love this barks gonna mini games rogue games as well. And penny Toler GM and president teams. We've been close for years and. A couple of times we talked about it about about it. And this time to time. He was right. Okay. So you said you were impacted by the women's game as well. Much like having nets Don Staley impacted him. What was the experience for you? Well, thank for me. Growing up in the household of my mom and dad both played in love basketball in school and kind of you know, as young adults. And then when we watched basketball in the house like there wasn't a difference in gender. We watched women's games, we watch men's games, my younger sister played in high school till she fell in love, and you know, how they some times. And so basketball was this was our thing as a family, and we didn't define it or trying to separate the men's game or the women's game and Pat summitt. Yeah. Who is my all time favorite terms of coaching. I mean one could art alleged the best. Regardless of of demands of women's game. And so I just kind of I don't see, you know, having this row now is like a somehow it's different than what I would be doing if I were coaching teaching, but obvious difference. Yeah. The also the difference is I believe that the game for women doesn't get the obviously the same attention, not the same monetary value. But when you get names, and I've always believed that if you get players who were well known an NBA supported, and are well known MBA to support it, you know, active current veteran, whatever I think that adds more legitimacy for the women. I know people who love the sport understand its purity and think that it's amazing ball. I know I do but having you as a head coach, I believe as a special. I dunno Genesee qua for the sparks, and I've had Candice on this show. She was my very first guest. So talk to me about that. I know she was a huge supporter of having on issues excited. That you were coaching the sparks talk to me about her. As a leader. We got Neka. You have so many great people tell me about it. From the from the beginning of of what you just stated my experience with that. In terms of like, you said there to be involved as one thing, and then sometimes the right voice or the right person being involved is a little bit different for me. When my daughter was diagnosed with reading the blessed Oma Asia, ten months got interviewed after does Utah Jazz game here, and I just kind of from the heart spoke about retina blast Oma families. No. The thunder blew out the bulls last night, but it was highlighted by a brawl between both teams Russell Westbrook exchange. Shoves with Chris done in the second quarter. And that started a chaotic scene with more players that spilled into the first row of the seats. It's not even Christmas and Ross's already gotten into it with multiple players this season. We're joined once again by Derek Fisher. Who was a team-mate Westbrook's in. Okay. See so Derek. You're the person to ask what is going on with rose. Not recipes being Russ in a lot of ways he's always played on h so I'm not surprised that you know, he's being himself in terms of debt. Got new twins in the house on top of it was sleeping. Oh, slim. That's part of it. But I think the other part is that I think Russell is going through a major transition, and is pointing his career in terms of fi- still finding that balance between giving Paul George that room to do what he's doing and having the season. He's having Stephen Adams is blossoming human him room. Didn't shooter is they're having great a great season so far. So Russell starting to learn how to kinda pull back he is. And let other guys eat. And so they're going to be some nights where it just feels a little awkward, and so now I have to do something else to get myself into the game. So that might be being physical. There might be talking a little bit more trash to make sure that he's still engaged at a certain level. So instead of taking thirty shots. He's now down to sixteen or seventeen. He's taken less threes. His triple doubles earth sixteen eleven and thirteen at is true at thirty five forty nine eleven and the thunder. I wanted to best team into wis. So I'm not. Overly concerned that he's off the edge here. I think he's just kind of going through some transition go out. I think he's all that might be true. But I think there's simplist ration- who going on to Skilton Russi shooting twenty four point eight percent from two three point lay he shooting sixty two percent now going into last. He was eighty two percent career free throw horrendous and he's averaging twenty points a game that's his lowest since the second season. Now, I understand we all deal at all. I care about is winning. I want to win. But I need to come a number two because I've shown that we can win that can still get thirty twelve and twelve we can win that way too. We win it. But you know, looking how shooting look how playing and I think the frustration because it Paul George is kind of moving on that. Hey, I'm the Bentley over here. You know, Paul is roughly his playlets. He's like he because it's not easy played in the west because you got Braun you've got Katie you got hardness of curry, Paul, George. I was one of the better players in the east. I want to show that I'm one of the better players in the NBA, not just the Eastern Conference. So Anthony Davis will you gotta put the chess out do let everybody know that you've arrived. And so I think some of this skip is plus ration- because he shooting the ball so poorly. It we're not used to see Roth play this bad. Yeah. They're winning. But it's almost like they're winning in spite of him because he's shooting the ball, so porn. It is true. So I'm not advocating fighting here..

And so this is why I think that usually when you hear these see I there's an answer for people like the challenge of old among Durant. And we're talking about them before you went Kardashian. You know, would he was the six minute ear. Yeah. I'm talking about that. I like that on Durant. I like the harassment of Derek Fisher on curry in his face playing tough defense not giving giving him any space moving lateral quickness with him everywhere. I liked that. I liked Kobe. Bryant defense on a on whoever whoever put him up. But we figure is gonna be clay. I'd like that I like that matchup. Menendez. You say you in two or three? But we could shoot threes to we just like that. But we didn't do it like to. But if you're gonna shoot threes, you're taking away your biggest advantage. But we would we we would we would put it downloaded shack. Some of the time. This is the key. This is what? And I don't know if we'll even see it at any point because by the time, let's just through theirs. We saw the rockets try it, and it didn't work is outscore out three out out warrior the warriors. You can't do that better than they do it. We saw. Lebron was just on a different planet for a week. But that's one of the things that magic sit when he signed up. The bronze dot going to try to outlawry warriors because he comes from a different tally much like shacks mentality in Kobe's mentality. When they were here what the Lakers, he thinks different than the guys up in Cleveland, trying to do the things that you can't match. You can't match Houston. Learn that last year. Even Chris Paul got hurt. It didn't matter. They would still get them. "You know, they jumped out to me on on kind of a short list, but Seattle won the championship last year. So I I, you know, I have no interest in giving sue bird any more confidence than what she already had. Razzie no war confidence either. So you know, we we will soon be competing against one another. But no, I think they are phenomenal basketball players, and I've had a chance to meet, Diana for sure I can't recall doing I've ever met. But that is also a great person. And I think that's the most important thing. Well, I have it. Thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. I have to check with my boss to Rica. Was there anything else you wanted to know from Derek before we let him go. I mean, he's passing his first day with flying colors. I'm over here stumped. I'm trying to think of something down things. And I was like everything that I've write-down Derek. You definitely we were like, you know, how we are like all right? We we haven't spent a lot of time. We don't live as basketball to tell you this our fan base. We are protective of our game right there. Like, all right. Let's see what they're talking about. But you know, I definitely Preston. We wanted to say thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would have want whether it sparks fans or WNBA fans or or women's basketball fans in general to know about you or your team or or just any thoughts before you go? You know, I mean, Finally, I would just say that this this conversation has been amazing. I enjoyed it myself. And I think Finally I would just say that I I really do love the game a basketball, and I and I don't define it by gender. And I don't view this amazing opportunity as a step down from what I used to do or where I used to coach. I look at this opportunity to step up and step in and help players be great at what they do. And and that's what a coach's job is. And I'm excited about having another opportunity to do it. And I'm hopeful that we can talk again one day when the LA sparks champions again. That's that's that's the number one go. We definitely will have you back on the show. Now, you gotta tell magic we said Hello to imagine give you any advice because mass going around the rim. Nobody Lakers thing. You feel mad just came up short in the world. I'm sure we'll talk dealing with a ally with Jeffrey. Hello. Yes. Tell him. You got some fans on around the rim and good luck. Coach congratulations and give everyone in L our best. Thank you. We'll do. We appreciate your time. All right. Take care. Well, it's a Ricoh. Derek Fisher was impressive. We will continue to have this conversation again next week. We will have Megan Kahn who talked to us a little bit about coaching opportunities for women all-sports. But I was impressed by Derrick. What were your thoughts to Rica? I was thoroughly impressed by his confidence. I was impressed by his knowledge of the women's game. Not that. I would think that he didn't know. But I when he said that dawn Staley was somebody who he looked up to growing up. I was like, wow. That's that is what we need to hear more of. So he will definitely be back on a round the rim. He the proved. He's around the rim of roof basketball is basketball. And I will say I do understand the other side of the argument to right because a woman now. Not getting an interview a former player not getting an interview or maybe someone who has given to women's basketball not getting an interview can be hard to swallow. And I think because we know in media in coaching in almost every aspect of women's basketball and playing the WNBA players the resources, aren't there the money isn't there?.

"How how much of a factor or can you talk about that relationship with penny and what that did for this decision? And then, you know, just how the WNBA in NBA. I mean, obviously, this is an example of two players that were to former players that have come together and catch relationship, but the role of the NBA in WNBA together from what she learned. Yes. No, I I think the relationship with penny for sure is is at the top of the list of things that factored into the decision. I think that it's always important to work with people that you had joy communicating with conversing with. Spending time around, you know, through conversations you develop a relationship you hear the commonalities and the some of the ways in which you see the game played in which you see people in general in terms of how you communicate. You know, how you build relationships how you build a culture and in a lot of ways pity, and I, you know, see those things similarly, and so as we've spoken over the years, we've always had a good report a high level of respect for one another. And so I took it very seriously the conversations that we had when when she approached me about except in the job. And and that was a major part of it being successful in just about anything. But in business in professional sports is really important to to be able to communicate and collaborate and work with other people on a high level. And I think penny and I have that starting out. And hopefully, that'll help us do some great things with our team on the court intern. Terms of that NBA WNBA relationship. You know, I think a lot of the players in recent years have been open themselves about their love and support for women's players. And and and that it's it's not as much about gender for them. They they they think diner Tarizi, Candace Parker and superbe and Brown is stored. And and Necker like, they think they are great basketball players period is not that they're great because they're women or they're not us. They think from Podgorze to Jimmy Butler like we talked about the Brian and stuff. There are number of guys. I mean, Kobe has daughters, you know, once plant basketball to high level coaching his girls. I just think that as we've all grown as men and we've gone from the young twenty two year old guy. That's only thinking about his career and guys have gotten older matured and been tried to better examples of for those of us in particular that have daughters that we have to leave by. Sample, and we can't just say that it's important for you. As a younger I'd have opportunities and to have, you know, pay equity or equality and not get in on the front line of that movement. So this is an opportunity to do something that I love to do and also possibly play a role in helping crow the women's game that makes it better going forward and one that everyone can always feel included in involved in. Yes that equity standpoint, and obviously you you didn't hire yourself. So this is probably more of a a question at the next level GM level, or you know, front office. But you know, there will be people who say there has been people who who have said, you know, WNBA player would never get a head coaching job at the NBA without having been assisted or been, you know, some part of a of a league organization. So why does Derek Fisher get to do that? What what will be your response to that? No, it's it's a it's a fair question. I'd like you said it made, you know, penny. Obviously, I think deserves the opportunity to to ask for that or respond to that. I think in some ways she deserves. I think the room to make decisions based on her experienced as a general manager for for twenty years almost general manager that has hired several different coaches. Some men some women some people of color, but in all of it. She's figured out a way to put rosters together and have coaches that have helped land championships and be successful. And I don't think she's seeing this has hiring a man or woman. I think she seeing it as hiring someone that she feels like best fits what her team needs right now..

"And we are excited. We talk a lot about why this was the job for him. You know, what he thinks about? You know, the LA sparks of the future a lot of things. So I'm gonna let you guys get to the interview. I do want to say though, that we've had quite a few people messaging us emailing us about our Notre Dame Yukon podcast. We are going to revisit the drama on Monday. Brooke wise tonight had a conversation about some interaction between our Rica, Gino. And there was obviously more to that than I saw. I was cleaning my house and doing a million things when that game was on. But there were a couple of interesting happenings of from one Ourika Goumba wa which prompted an apology from McGraw from our eek to their fans about some behavior that they weren't proud of. There's also some blockage happening on Twitter for what I understand. So we'll we'll talk a little bit about all that. But this podcast is about Derek Fisher. And we want to know what you think and before we hear from Derek. Fisher. I think it is very important as producer of this podcast, and friend of the lovely China Roberson to note that at the time of this recording. He had literally just finished his press release, which means that around the rim is the first platform to get this one on one coverage with Derek Fisher. And I think that's important. Yes. You are. Absolutely. Right. And speaking of that press conference something that came out of that. That was interesting to me, and we're going to have a conversation next week podcast will drop woman named Megan Khan who the executive director of we coach it's organization that helps to get women opportunity and coaching. But one thing that came out of that press conference was that penny Toler said there was not didn't seem like there was much of a search at all. I mean, she knew she wanted their Fisher. And we talked about the rumblings that we've heard happening since his hire everyone is asking well did any form. WNBA players who are coaching get interviewed where they're men who had coached women's basketball interviewed. What was this process license seem to head turn around so quickly? And I will just say that it did not sound like there were other interviews that penny Toler knew what she wanted to move on. And you know, penny has had a lot of success in the in the WNBA. She played in the league. She's now an executive one of the most successful executives GM's in the WNBA and just made an executive decision as my momma would say, but yes, you're right to Riga. We are on the front end of this. By the time we finished taping. Though. There will be ten other podcasts at Derek his bid on that website. But out to Eli. We appreciate you look it out. And now here is head coach new head coach of the LA. Sparks Derek Fisher. Well, basketball fans, we are excited because round the ruined is getting an exclusive interview you would have to be somewhere buried, hopefully, not under snow if you're here in Atlanta, though, it is very cold is probably going to Rica is. But to not have heard the news. The big news coming out of L A that they have hired a brand new head coach. And it's someone that you know, someone you've heard of someone who's basketball game you've probably tried to emulate at some point at the rec five-time NBA champion. Derek Fisher is now the head coach of the LA sparks. We have Derek on the show. Welcome derrick. Thank you. Thank you very much for having me. I am excited to be here and looking for in conversation, man. I appreciate it. Yeah. For sure for sure. So I mean fans know all about you. Right. Horowitz, who is the PR PR Representative that makes that what you would call it PR. That's what you would call it. Yeah. Right now, the -secutive enough, but ally gave us an opportunity to talk to the newly named head coach of the LA sparks drum roll, please. Case you haven't heard Derek Fisher five-time NBA champ. Their Fisher is the new head coach of the LA sparks if you haven't been paying attention. Former Elliott sparks head coach, Brian Adler resigned as of November thirtieth and a comprehensive search per the release when Brian resigned started immediately, but that search didn't last very long because on December fifth. Derek Fisher was hired. And there has been a lot of conversation, obviously celebration wherever you have someone who has achieved at level of basketball that Derek Fisher has changed at to be a part of the WNBA to be a part of the sparks organization, which is very obviously close to Lakers, which you know, his contributions on that side as well. So a lot of excitement a lot of criticism is well some rumblings. There's. A bit of coverage out here right now. I mean, you can follow any of the great people that cover women's basketball. Whether it's Michelle voelpel or how're Meg dole. Or Rachel Gallaghen. Had a really interesting article asking some questions and actually continued to use the quote bet on women who he was interesting, but she had some questions about in concerns about the hiring of Derek Fisher who has never coached women's basketball, never coached, the WNBA assistant or at any at any point. He did have a stint with the Knicks. He was their head coach from two thousand fourteen to twenty sixteen record of forty ninety six. So the question, I think has been at least the one I've heard because been why not maybe hire a woman and you hear that. Because there are so few opportunities for women and this is a women's league. There are a lot of former WNBA players that are coaching. So that's a question. We've heard. Why not hire someone who has given to the women's game at some level? When you look at the Brian advocates of the world or the Kurt Miller's, or you know, a lot of the men we see in the WNBA head coach is now Fred Williams who's not with the team. But these been have given their lives to growing women's basketball in particular. And basically the question is just what WNBA player would ever get an NBA head coaching job without that experience. Agreed. So we're just here people to educate. That's what's Rican doing in. We want to have these conversations, and we wanna talk and listen. "Visible forty, eight power back senior NBA writer for Bleacher report, and I'm on vacation folks, but no worries. We still have a great episode for you. We got a best of with highlights from some of the interviews I did earlier this year, you'll hear from Derek Fisher talking about his time with Kobe and shack winning titles with those guys. What life was like during that era of the Lakers and also offering a little bit of insight into what Kobe's first couple of seasons in the NBA were like, we've also got highlights from my conversation with Ishmael played has played so far for ten NBA teams in seven seasons on pace to potentially play for more teams than any player in NBA history. A lot of career left. He's currently with Detroit. Of course, any talks really candidly about what that that life is like that career path to be constantly traded and waived and signed. Saved again and re signed. It's a really unique and interesting path that is Smith has followed Safar, and he also shares with us some really interesting advice. He got from one of his former teammates Russell Westbrook from his time in Oklahoma, some advice that that values to this day. And then finally, you'll hear some excerpts excerpts from my interview with the great rail and who's going to be inducted in the hall of fame in just a few weeks, of course, alongside Steve Nash and Grant Hill, Jason Kidd and others. Ray was fantastic, and he weighed in on a number of issues, but we highlighted a couple of them here. Whoa, Ray has a strong opinion about the goat debate. The greatest of all time debate between Jordan and LeBron you'll want to hear that. And we also talked about, of course, that kind of bittersweet departure. You know, a lot of ways bitter departure from the Celtics when he left for Miami, and whether he has any regrets about some of the frayed relationships that. Followed that. So there you go, Derek, Fisher Ishmaelites Ray Allen. The best that we got from each of those guys. This season sued your chance to kind of get caught up on a full on the full forty eight enough few interviews that maybe you missed this is the highlight addition, and it is starting with Derek Fisher coming up. My guest today is a eighteen year veteran of the NBA one, five NBA championship rings did not get quite as far on dancing with the stars, but we won't hold that against him, Derek Fisher, how you doing man. I'm good. I'm good man. How you doing? I'm I'm great. I'm great. You spent twelve plus seasons with Kobe. I covered both of you guys obviously for for seven years of that, and I can think of no one better to kind of, you know, take a little bit of trip down memory lane and reflect a little bit too. So I wanna start here of everybody. I've met in my life. Forget NBA outside the NBA lawyers, politicians, whoever I feel like he's probably the most dedicated to his craft of anybody I've ever met in any walk of life, whatever the profession may be, and it's it's, it's it's interesting that that come through from day one for you as a teammate. Now you were saying like some people didn't necessarily understand it or couldn't didn't know how to deal with that..

"Man of years of their careers a ford that the first eight years before the breakup of the shack cobi lakers and fish left for a while and eventually came back and spent another several years with the lakers but he was there for all five championships that kkob one and so there's a few people have more insight into the full span of kobe bryant nba career all the highs and lows and frustrations and triumphs few people have that perspective in a greater dose than than derek fisher does so we will talk about that we reflect on what kobe was like on day one and what is aspirations were and what the shatt kkob dynamic was like early on and we'll talk about that second phase where kobe was the undisputed leader of that team winning another couple of titles and we'll get straight into in fact 24 rate which is which is the cobi if you had to pick just one and one jersey to retire which one should it be dare can i have a little bit different perspective on that so that's a it's a fun discussion and he hasn't he actually has a great perspective on why they have to do both and in fact what explanation that i had not heard before up so we'll get into that we'll talk about all the other laker years and what will touch on a few other things as well you know obviously dirk was president of the players union for several years and just a guy who's always had his finger on the pulse of things with regard to the players and their their actions and they're they're blur place in the league in their place in society which is a long way of saying we did discuss a little bit the anthem and the protests that have gone on the nfl which has not taken place in the nba we touch on that a little bit we talk a little bit about the age limit in the nba we do touch on tensing with the stars and it's a great conversation it could have gone even much longer i feel like i could do an entire series.

"The lakers and also my like of long so ball and how it push it pushes the lakers in a very positive direction in terms of the last five years where the franchise was headed that's in stark contrast to derek fisher who used to be the starting guard for the champion los angeles lakers use on the most recent championship team alongside with kobe bryant since he left the lakers he went to the new york knicks as a head coach he gotten to a fistfight with matt barns who originally who did play on the lakers at one time with derek fisher they were teammates mad barnes most recently got a ring with the golden state warriors this past season there was a fight because bad barnes received the skype call from his is son and his son was asking his father mad barnes why was derek fisher daddy's friend over at the house seeing mommy loria go vaughn the former white the exwife of mad barnes divorced but evidently didn't tell mad barnes that she had started seeing derek fisher his former teammate and friend their families when derek fisher was married to his wife the went out together they spent time together so there was of closeness between the families to make a long story short met drove over to his exwife's house and beat derek fisher that that's the first part of the story but it's very important to it a few weeks ago derek fisher got to a dui crash he was driving a cadillac escalade and in the passenger side was glory go vaughn his now girlfriend and exwife of bad barnes the problem was the car in the crash was registered to matt barnes in the divorce she got the car because the car was supposedly for her and the kids so she would have an automobile to take the kids around why derek fisher was drive began on this on this evening i have no idea but he was getting to a d8 dui crash and flipped over on the one on one free way back on june fourth here's the update to the story he's been charged with two counts of dui and if convicted derek fisher faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison.
