"Went deep Derek Dietrich went yard Trevor Bauer went two innings didn't give up a hit to give up a run which is no surprise since I told you they won that game eight nothing struck out two Reds and A.'s tomorrow first pitch three oh five right here on seven hundred WLW know why the NFL is a lot of fun right now okay maybe there's not one reason but the biggest reason why the NFL is a lot of fun right now look at the quarterbacks we we have been as as football fans we have we have been blessed with this influx of really fun intriguing charismatic young talents Patrick Mahomes Lamar Jackson deshaun Watson the the the those dudes on a weekly basis like must watch right in the heart of his career Russell Wilson you still have some holdovers mainstays Aaron Rodgers Tom Brady and then on the the a different scale there's there's guys were interesting but the jury is still out Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold players like that but we we are we are in the midst of you know throw Carson Wentz into the equation maybe between Haskins played himself into in the equation but that there's there's there's really fun group of quarterbacks in the league right now but to me the the the the the the trio that really gets me excited is Lamar it's Patrick Mahomes and deshaun Watson and and they've added a dimension of fun to this league that I think is taking things to another level over the last year to so why am I bringing this up I have to talk about low ends up having a great career I'm an NFL fan man this league is more fun when there's a lot of good quarterbacks in it I hope obviously is a Bengals fan I hope Joe burrow was great I think you can be really really good a lot is going to be asked of him he is really going to have to be great to live up to the hype and things in sports you and I both know often usually don't live up to the hype but I want to talk about what was great just enter Justin Herbert's really good this league is is really really fun when there's a lot of really good quarterbacks in so I'm not rooting against to a tech available to to be great I hope he has a great career strikes me as a good dude loved watching him in college wherever he goes ma'am I hope he has a lot of success I hope he doesn't have as much Joe burrow because someone Joe brown to win five super bowls what do you like I I I just I I root for quarterbacks to be good in this league that that class a couple years ago with Rosen and Allen and Mayfield and Lamar and Darnold it's it's really good for the league of as many of those guys are as good as as possible now I think Lamar is pretty damn good the rest of those guys who you know there's been some good and bad from Baker good and bad from Darnold good and bad from Allen Josh Rosen there's been almost no good whatsoever this week is good when there's really good QB play so I'm rooting for to attack available but this to me is the next step in their in the narrative this to me is the next step in fact you're gonna hear Todd McShay in ten minutes talk about what he would do if all things were equal between burrow into and all the minutes an interesting conversation can you think of the debates we would be having had to talk about low and not gotten her it be fascinated bangles all the number one overall pick all sorts of things they could do could they trade down and still get one with a value to a more than Joe burrow I don't know now it's worth pointing out the debate started to shift in fact it really wasn't a debate for the first month and a half of the college football season two should be the top guy and then borough week in week out was putting up ridiculous numbers they play head to head November the ninth and it felt like things shift this is before too I got hurt they play that head to head game LSU Alabama burrows better tools great threw for four hundred yards plus four touchdowns borough was better and you had a lot of people that like wait a minute tap the brakes on to a maybe it's going to be Joe burrow from a Bengal standpoint those specifically this is a once in A. generation opportunity think of it for as as often as the Bengals have frustrated broken hearts disappointed fell short of expectations shown just massive ineptitude how many times have they actually had the number one overall pick I mean as much as as you could argue they've been a huge joke over the last thirty years that had the number one overall pick three times and once they had done to to trade up it doesn't happen that often who knows when you're gonna have an opportunity like this again to pick number one overall hopefully it's gonna be a while before they do and there's a a quarterback there that everybody agrees has a chance to be really really good at the next level I do things Joe burrows gonna stink there's you know various degrees of success the people think he'll have but no one's like got you know a character issues huge red flag here man you're taking a risk so you don't know how often this is going to come around and also understand with this franchise's Zach Taylor was hired with the idea that he would be the the coach when the Bengals moved on from indeed all that that that's that's that's why he was hot let's let's be honest when they let Marvin Lewis go we talked about it the next head coach of the Bengals is going to be the person in charge of the Bengal switch quarterbacks in football through whoever that is and and through whatever mechanisms they do he's going to be the guy as patient as the Bengals ordinarily are with head coaches my guesses Zach Taylor's professional fortunes are ultimately going to be determined by how much does he win well Joe burrows here you're drafting him for the next four five years minimum this is act Taylor's chance really I mean this is this is ride or die for Zach Taylor probably for due to open as well let's face it as as much as you can make a case for the Bengals had got the roster get younger stockpile picks there's gonna be a bunch of returning players who are kind of running out of chances Geno Atkins Carlos Dunlap AJ green if those players are ever going to achieve the kind of success that has as a team eluded the bangles thus far for June elections in AJ green a particular you know you hear about well they have borderline hall of fame cases they could use some signature postseason moment those players there's a lot riding on this Mike brown I know Mike brown is maybe the least sympathetic figure ever but let's not kid ourselves Mike brown's not as mid forties we we we we don't know how many QB's he's going to be around for I don't like to put it in those terms but let's be honest is there a future this franchise you can put me on the head all you want to tell me the Bengals are gonna stay don't worry about it they're not going anywhere and I hope they do for many many reasons but until the piece of paper sign that says they're staying beyond two thousand twenty six home let let me see the piece of paper Intel then it's up in the air it becomes even more up in the air the more this team moves to what writing on this for a lot of people they cannot get this wrong I mean this franchise in many respects the people that work for it the franchise as as an entity it's at a crossroads which means you have to take the least the the least amount of risk possible you want a high end Joe burrow has high end to attack of my lo has high end and man I hope he realizes but he also carries with him risk and just think how would be it would be framed I mean at first but you know you and I both know people love revisionist history they love to go back in time and save this they should have done that yet but we do this with the Bengals in the draft all the time well they should have taken that guy they draft poorly they should have done this we do it all the time can you imagine the conversations we will have if they were to take to attack available five months after hip surgery on top of all the other injuries that he's had to deal with five months after he had hip surgery let's say the injury thing continues to pop up and Joe burrow elsewhere goes on to become a star you and I both know the Bengals would be raked through the coals wait a minute you took five months from the operating table we have the number one overall pick and a dude who just threw sixteen touchdowns and fifteen college games was there you and I both know I have nothing against you they've got to get this right that they had that there is like there's no choice that they have to get this right Zach Taylor is not gonna be given another chance to be an NFL head coach you only get so many cracks at this as a coach you only get so many cracks at the number one overall pick and with the quarterback right there as an organization so this has to work and when something has to work you don't incur risk and nothing against to a there's nothing that says he can't go on to have a really good NFL career a great NFL career I really like I loved watching him in college come on ma'am if if you step away from this to look at it through the lens of the person that's just waiting to to whack away at the bangles if if it wasn't you know we're we're trying to to be a contrarian here and bring it up to a tiger by Lois if the Cincinnati Bengals if if it came out this week that they are fixated on to attack about lower fixated on him the way I believe they're fixated on Joe burrow if if the report came out this week you know what the Bengals they're fixated on to what they're taking him no matter what people would be screaming and yelling and I would be among them wait a minute there's a guy that didn't have hip surgery so I get where we're going to go with this it's the next part of the Joe burrow N. F. L. draft narrative what should they do Hey what about two he's healthier he's gonna throw soon he's progressing nicely he was the presumptive number one overall pick in the two thousand twenty draft for two years and now we've changed it should we be considering him and yeah you should consider it and I hope he's really good it's good for the leak but from a Bengal standpoint this this quite frankly is in the Philadelphia Eagles holding the number one overall pick that the New England Patriots holding the number one overall pick of the New Orleans Saints or or some franchise that has been viable isn't going anywhere history of success secure head coaches there's a lot riding on this for the Cincinnati Bengals both of the people working for the bangles and for the team as a whole for the team's relationship in the city when there's this much riding on something you have to encourage little risk as possible and to talk about low carries with him more risk than Joe burrow the upside might be higher I kind of feel like the upside of both is really really high like there's room for both guys to be good this isn't we hope Joe burrows great tuna steaks no they both mana being really good but the rest of the low end the part that you're taking on the part that you're crossing your fingers over look every time you do these QB's drops back the their their teams fan bases are gonna be holding their breath I certainly will Joe burrow but you're going to do so a little bit more with two and I just think there's too much riding on this to be able to take that your thoughts are more than welcome well we'll open up the phone lines five one three seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred and one pound seven hundred is a absolutely free on AT and T..

"The Reds and the Indians a game today a game tomorrow and then the all star break as we enter today's game your Cincinnati Reds dead last in the National League central division but at a huge bought just four games out of first place Josh four out of first place if things go right this weekend that could be down to two stand by we'll figure that out is the weekend progresses as for the Indians there ten games over five hundred there forty eight and thirty eight and they're six and a half games behind the AL central division leader Minnesota today starting pitchers are brought to you by western and southern financial group helping make Cincinnati the best place to live work and enjoy life well the Indians will send right hander Shane Bieber to the mound Shane beavers seven three three point five four earned run average and four and one over his last seven starts the Reds counter with Anthony decibel funny five in four four point three five earned run average three and one over his last four starts for of his last five starts at the desk will body is gone five innings or better three of his last four he's allowed only two earned runs the one clunker in that span six earned runs at Milwaukee other than that desco has been very very good over the last month well let's talk about where the Reds are realistically we mention their four games out of first place three and a half games off the second wild card lead as we enter this the all star break for two thousand and nineteen and the question becomes what do the Reds do from a business perspective not only to stay in the race this year hopefully qualify for the playoffs but long term what should be in their game plan financially and what should be in their game plan on the playing field the Reds have a lot of expiring contracts after two thousand and nine ten a rower scooter Jennette Jassi please Jose Peraza Derek Dietrich Jose Iglesias and the the the ghost Alex would what are they do financially going forward well all those contracts could expire all those players to take a hike in fact if every player on a one year contract leaves the Reds after this season they would have a boat load of cash to play with in the offseason to bring in quality talent but will it be talent that captures the imagination of this city like this roster has look there's two ways for a team to garner your interest one way is to contend for and get into the playoffs and play for a World Championship the other way is to have a roster that just absolutely the fan base falls in love with I'm not sure the entire fanbase is in love with this roster but I do think a large majority are two reasons lead me to this place one of the television ratings Fox Sports Ohio is enjoying for this the twenty nineteen season the Reds are among the top five Major League Baseball teams in fan interest that translates into television ratings and remember they're up against some really big markets two teams in LA two teams in New York a team in Chicago and other big city big deal teams and yet their top five in television ratings to another reason why I know this fan bases in raptured with this team is because of what happened yesterday the Reds open the doors at great American ball park invent invited fans into experience both on field experience and also some of the places in that ballpark that fans can't normally get to the Reds were presented a little lemon but the Major League Baseball schedulers holiday weekends our weekends the team's live for and yet on this holiday weekend the Major League Baseball schedulers didn't give the red so Friday game so they open the doors and they had something that was a tremendous your win for them and a lot of you showed up in fact a lot a lot of you showed up so that's why I'm saying that this team really has something special going for it something we haven't had in this town since two thousand and thirteen five all four years of baseball and now twenty nineteen and so the Reds have to figure out what washer do they want in twenty nineteen twenty twenty and which of these expiring contracts do they want to make a serious run at now of course there's reality that gets played into factored into this because players that are becoming free agents particularly players are becoming free agents for the first time in their careers don't want to do anything preemptively that takes a matter of the bidding process that is free agency not all players going to free agency and hit the ball out of the parking get the contract they want we've seen that with players that have played here and players that have played other Major League Baseball teams ten a role are comes to mind is on a one year ten million dollar contract he has been a terrific acquisition atenolol arc probably wants to see what life is like outside of Cincinnati from a dollars and cents standpoint I harken back to what happened last year with Matt Harvey now all Harvey was a gifted athlete that hit some rough times in New York that is we know his career was piece back together again here in Cincinnati but he didn't preemptively sign with the rates before free agency he went into free agency and quite frankly found a very good deal for himself I think that will happen this year with role arc and I think it will happen this year with most of these other players it's going to be very difficult to tell a player who's had a great two thousand and nineteen sorry we're going to we'd like to hear this year to stay here and not test free agency in verbally players don't Yasiel Puig is a target the red should have I I don't sense them selling him license them keeping him but the fact of the rat battery remains why would he short circuit his chances in free agency why should the Reds not at least make a chance or run to keep him here in twenty twenty he is kind of the new metric baseball player he's not hitting the ball for average although frankly a two forty seven that's not bad he's not getting on base more than thirty percent of the time in fact he's getting on base just a hair under thirty percent of the time what he hits home runs he is nineteen he drives runs it he's got forty nine it's not beyond the realm of possibility for Yasiel Puig to finish this season with forty home runs in a hundred RBI he is after all a streaky ball player and if he gets on one of those streaks that could happen yet week is making nine million dollars in this is final year before free agency it will cost a lot to keep him he'll be looking for a big payday out there by gas is a contract somewhere north of sixty million dollars what how do you know unless you try I don't think they'll let what ya seal pre walk at the trade deadline or trade him at the trade deadline I think they'll keep particularly if the team remains in contention what you have Rourke at ten million scooter genetic nine point seven million these are numbers they're making this season we get nine ward who we haven't seen it almost ten million Jose Peraza two point seven six Jose Iglesias two point five Derek Dietrich at just two million you don't think he's going to attract a lot more than that on the free agent market he has to know that Jose Iglesias as well he's making two point five billion dollars this year financially the Reds have a lot of decisions to make and a lot of players to pursue so on the one hand if none of those players come back they will have a lot of money to operate with for two at twenty twenty but will a fine players that will captivate the attention of this town like this current group pads and will they find players that will come in that will allow the Reds to win yet another NLCS championship end maybe go to the World Series it's a very dicey game the Reds are in right now and they're not quite there yet with this group what this group is playing well over its head particularly the every day eight it is pitched beyond belief what has been good enough yet to get them out of the cellar even if they're only four games out of first place do they chase these free agents during the season before they get on the open market or do do they elect them to walk and use the money to try to get something better in twenty twenty they could if they win championships they will attract the attention of this market and maybe even in rapture it like this team is doing right now but then again maybe they won't when you have a lot of players on one year contracts and when your quote on quote going for this year well the aftermath of a after aftermath of all of that is no guarantee it's three twenty were less than fifteen minutes away from Reds baseball as they take on the Indians in an intro Ohio rivalry more on that coming up next on the home of your Cincinnati Reds seven hundred WLW GT I. "Entitled and greedy, I need to bring in gear mo- here because yesterday on the show, we were talking about Derek Dietrich being hit six times by pitch. And a baseball series and gear MO who it is very hard to engage. There is no telling when we're going to snag on something that gear moat cares about. And we're no. There's no telling what that will be could be anything. It could be forged in fire. It could be cardboard. It could be, you know, he's afraid of getting a blood clot hitting the Brig apposite car. That's okay. But yesterday, you got engaged on this hit by pitch conversation. More the point you pride yourself as sort of a good and strong and proud baseball voice. And one of the things you were saying was that Jeff Bagwell was somebody who could take a hit by pitch better than Craig Biggio. That's which a lot of people pointed out to us that Craig Biggio was to away from the record for being hit by pitch. You picked like literally the almost the worst person you could've picked to compare Bagwell too, because he pales in comparison to busy. Oh and getting hit by path. That's not what I said. What I said, was, I'd rather have the body type of Bagwell than Bijou if I'm going to be we created a position yesterday for those of you who are listening yesterday. We created a new position in baseball where there's a spot on the roster that exists only for a person to get hit by pitches. And that's their only job just go up there. I think we took a battle way from them. At some point. I don't know why. Because no one is throwing inside on a guy, not holding them nine why you just because then you could flow your arms out and get hit intentionally by the pitch. Also, you can't wear padding. We discuss all of this yesterday. I made a lot of sense yesterday when we did it now today, recapping it makes little less sense than yesterday. But in the time, it seemed like a good idea. So we were talking about the body types of people because I said, I would do it, and then I quickly realized, I would not do that, because that hurts a lot. I, I can I can we just re I'd like to rewind for just a second here. You as a fearful sort of hypochondriac type creature you actually enthusiastically said initially, I would sign up for a season of being hit by pitches, and then you quickly realized. Wow, that was a dumb thing to say, I don't think you've ever realized so quickly that what you said was dumb while his blinded by the dollars in this imaginary scenario. And then I realized, I still have my body, not a Jeff Bagwell's body. But to the point, I think, Jeff Bagwell's body is better equipped to take a hit by pitch, then Craig Bijou and his thighs is what it's all about, like he is just he's like a brick house where BG oh not so much. Like I feel like if you were to get hit by one hundred and two mile an hour fastball. Right. Bijl is more likely to have something break on him than Bagwell. Which is really what I was thinking about, I'm not sure that's true. But put it on the poll at lebatardshow who. Who's more likely to get hurt? If hit by a pitch modern day career leader in hit by pitches Craig busy o or someone who's one hundred something behind him in. Jeff Bagwell would Greg Cody, what would I have to pay Greg Cody to the way we having the conversation yesterday is you get to be on a major league roster for a year and make it lease the major league minimum, which is over five hundred grant. Right. But your job and your only job is to lead the league in hit by Pitt. Yes, that happened. And let's say, let me wear armor, like mediaeval armor, so that I would never actually feel that pitch hitting me the hit by pitch is the thing that needs to be raised from baseball. I would draw a hardline if I were an empire before every game, the empire calls both teams for a little conference and says, don't be leaning..

"And then hopefully you'll join me for the Kelsey Chevrolet extra inning show after the game fresh off a sweep of the Houston Astros and winters have four straight the registered Milwaukee, Open up a four game set against those Milwaukee Brewers for more on the reds where they've been and where they are headed. It's always a pleasure to welcome in the president of baseball operations for your Cincinnati Reds. He's on the acute hearing centers dot com hotline he is dick Williams. How are you? Thanks for having me. I'm sure you'll tell the crowd I offer to come on anytime, coincidence, that dumb on after a four game win streak. That is exactly right. I can confirm that. Yes. It is good to hear your voice, and it's good. Enjoy a night of their own. I don't think I met her. She she stayed mainly out. She loved it. She was doing so many of the drills outside. She didn't get inside much. She sorry. She missed you. But that is a fabulous event and they had a blast that night. Yeah. Unlike unlike fans unlike me, you as a president of baseball, you have to remain even keel and can't get to hiking, too low, but may even you, I think would admit the last three days they've been pretty fun. Haven't they? The fans were fantastic. This home stay undercut off to slow stars games, Texas skate Saturday, and then hung with us, and they showed up the last four days, and they were treated four great wins after four rain delays, and the player set off that energy it definitely for me. That slow start when we were telling ourselves better than we are. But it's a lot more fun when you actually went on the field than when you're talking about what's, what's the potential dick? There are certainly more cylinders turning now in that offense Puig, Winker Peraza contributions up and down your lineup. These days. The first couple of weeks. But. But you can't you can't script it the way you want to every time. That's why you gotta have more than enough guys. And he got guys that are willing to step in and pick up the slack, and Dietrich, one of some games early and really gave us a jolt. And so to declare his way they helped offensively when some of the other guys were doing as much now. And now you know the other guys are starting to really click, and from the C when you got a lineup has over keeps going the way they do dick. That's a point. We I, I don't think we can overlook the, the versatility the flexibility of your bench. That is a major component of this team. It's become a major component in baseball if you're going to win these days. Has it takes ability, but it also takes the right attitude, and I give our players. And our coach is a lot of credit, navigating those waters because we're the, the industry is making shift away from sort of being penciled in the lineup in the same spot in the lineup in spot in the field for one hundred fifty games a year. Now you really have to be willing to do what it takes. Michael, the resins, an extreme example of that could be achieved athlete. But what Jose prizes doing moving around the field. Kyle Derek Dietrich, you know, all these guys play different positions almost on a daily basis and being willing to come off the bench to start on a given day it, it really allows us to always try to put the team in the best position succeed for given inning or play and really take the game and break it down. And I appreciate the way the coaches have aggressively. Exploited are strange and the players of body chemistry in sports can be kind of a nebulous term. It's, it's much different than analytics. It's not something you can write on paper. But it seems at least outside looking in the personalities really fit in this puzzle for you guys. And that's something I I'm guessing you don't take lightly when you're constructing team. We're very close to having the right group in that clubhouse. These guys are feeding off each other. They support each other. Nobody wanted to get off to that slow start. But if anything it taught us had an egg in there, how to fight how to pick each other up and make those guys really feel blessed, by the way, they pulled out of that and played since those first ten days or so. No, you don't know how these guys are gonna fit together. And you could see, we've got some pretty unique personalities. Two notable additions from the outside on minor league deals, but also bringing gray in Roark in these are all guys came different organizations, very different backgrounds. But they are United by the fact that we'd her. They were competitors and they were willing to put team. I and that's what I think, is go away for us, so far, there's I think forty-one days to the trade deadline. I'm so many people want to want to pin down buyers sellers. How do you view your situation? I is is a fluid situation away to avoid you describe it. Sure. Continue to evaluate. But right now. Getting better better winning more games. We feel really lucky to have played the way we have, and then have scooter Ginette, Alex wood on the way to just make this team better. I mean, those are two guys that are obviously already in the budget that are everyday major league players, we're gonna add in expect to give a big boost you look around the field. And because we're always thinking about ways to the team. And really, if these guys start playing better the way they, they have been. It's not easy to find a glaring weakness. You know, the, the starting staff has been consecutive for best ERA in baseball. Bullpens been the best in baseball collectively. And the offense is is really starting to get scary. So we'll we like we liked the progress we've made in the next month. I'll give us a chance to see where where we we go from there. Jon morosi. Fox Sports today tweeted that the you the organization is open to potentially adding a bat with some controllable years on his contract. True. Here we go. Already doing. I think any team would be would be interested in adding young controllable position players or or pitchers. If they make the team better like I said you go around the dime. A glaring hole right now. Really the, the Al was got off to the slowest start offensively and winter. You know, he's been close to a nine hundred PS since ten days into the season. You know, since early may has been any hundred plus guy. Dell's obviously been a great boost since he got here. So we think the playing a lot better than it was when scooters back. You know that will give us another bat to mix in the lineup. So maybe Dietrich it's it's more time in the outfield than coming back hitting the way he has. So, you know, we'll see. I, I don't think that is a glaring need. But, but if the right spot opens up, we'll be, we'll be looking let me take a shot at designing in another way. Maybe a better way of asking. Do you have the flexibility payroll wise, to pursue something like that? If it opens up, we do, we do we have positioned ourselves going with this season. We wanted to be in a position to go either way, and we thought, we had a really talented roster but, but with a lot of flexibility, we've got six pending free agents or so that, you know, we, we could. You know, we, we should if we go one direction, we could end up moving on the budget and would never put our position. So is where we have to trade. Likewise, we, we left ourselves offer to, to make the team better of things started to go our way like they have. So we, we definitely have the flexibility to add on top of what we have if that's the direction, that's most appropriate reds, president of baseball operations. Dick Williams hanging out for just a couple. More minutes on sports talk. We're what seventy two seventy games or so into the season. What do how do you view a David's ability so far to navigate this in terms of not just strategy but also dealing with players who are learning his ways in in new ways in the game. Yeah. Great learning curve, and I couldn't be happier with where we are right now, the privacies, made when you spend time with him, whether Jaffer, tough loss, or, you know, an off day in a planning session. What you're struck by is his calm demeanor. He does not get overly excited. He has the feel of someone who's been there before that his confident what they're doing that knows what they're doing it makes it really easy for the front office to, you know, to work with a staff, that's lead that way, very clear on, on what information he wants it needs. We've been able to provide him with a lot of good stuff or which departments grown significantly in the coaches are leveraging that, that I, I really like how David dealt dealt with the group and as people have seen we've had some players that have you're raised questions about about playing time and, and their usage. And in those sometimes we down a bad road. And now the way he handled it as, as a really impressive. He he will. He welcomes those. Challenges and use of as as learning opportunities for him. And for the player in all cases, they've been resolved very favorably very quickly. You know, we just you know, we don't want guys that are just better content just to be here just to be in the major leagues. We want guys that are pushing, but, but David's made it clear you're not entitled to anything by virtue of the fact that you're getting paid a lot of money or by virtue of the fact what you did in minor leagues. You just aren't entitled to, to be run out there, every day, you gotta keep earning it. And when it's your your time you step up and help your teammate and we're starting to really see that click. And that that's, that's the only way you're going to be able to beat these good teams especially in those close games last question for I I could do this all night. I think the cubs are in town here next weekend. Is it reasonable? I'm knocking on wood that scooter Jeanette could be here next weekend. I would say he's giving. Give me pretty quick. And I would hope that it is before the break. So sometimes homestand is a distinct possibility. I think he's been battling weather when a couple of his he had a rehab start. He was going to go back out the next night but the field which to wet. Yeah. So he worked out away from the field weather permitting, making sure he gets in those back toback starts everything, feels, great so far. But it's it's really hard to, to simulate that nine innings day after day it. So we've got to get at least a few of those before it comes back. Joy this. I you have the hotline number I want you to surprise me one night when I'm doing extra innings and I'm going to look up on the board. And it'll say dick is calling from the front office and I'll go to the line and we'll talk about the game one night. The Trump caller gets excited about something patients, certainly there. I'll take you up on. That was a great catching up in best of luck enjoy tonight. All right. Thank you. Thanks, dick, dick Williams, reds, president of baseball operations. Yeah, I just want to look up on the screen line, six dick calling from the front office. That would be cool. Six twenty sportstalk seven hundred wwl w. Lisi held traffic.

"Okay Tanner Roark, on the mound for your Cincinnati raise, as he and the reds, try to make it to a row over the Washington nationals, by the way, Roark, four and three on the twenty nine thousand nine season. He has not faced the Washington nationals so far this year, his last outing was on may the twenty six so let's see that would have been last Sunday at Chicago. And he gets the win. Yeah. Started the game. Pitch. Well, five innings six hits. No earned runs. No runs at all allowed and Tanner Roark. Threw the ball very very well in that game. Let's see if he can parlay that into a win this afternoon over the Washington nationals, by the way tonight starting pitcher is brought to you by western and southern financial group helping to make Cincinnati, the best place to live work and enjoy life. Well it happened again this week. It seems like it always happens when the pirates and the reds, get together. Somebody got hit by a pitch. And that's so body was a u halio Suarez. Thank goodness. There was nothing serious in terms of injury that came of it. But again, we see this far too frequently we saw earlier this year with Chris Archer the pirates and Derek, Dietrich after Dietrich stare at a home run ball, longer than Archer wanted him to, and then Dietrich did it again. This week at three and one game. Why not? Not. But apparently that doesn't set well with pitchers, and so back then Archer decided he was going to take target practice against Derek Dietrich. It seems to be a very Neanderthal way to deal with this. Ongoing problem of quote unquote, showing the other guy up. Backward at all festered when Archer and Dietrich had their desktop early. In April I had on with me on my radio show. A guy by the name of Jason turbo. He had a book that came out a while back called the baseball codes and part of the baseball coach was what to do after you hit a home run your, your demeanor at home plate and what the pitcher should do if he doesn't like your demeanor, these codes, exist inside the game of baseball and their police by the players inside of baseball, and it just seems all just all on sensical to me. Anyway, turbo was on my show back in April, and I thought it would be a good time to revisit that interview and what he says in the book and how major league players think about things like this. So we welcome in once again, the author of the baseball codes, Jason turbo. Jason, thanks for joining us. I'm great campaign for having me on. I just I just wonder now in this day and age of, of educa-. Ball players. Many of whom go to college heavy money invested in all of these players. Why does still goes on? I, I really don't understand it, man. We're in a gray area right now. You talk about this not happening in one thousand nine hundred eighty three wouldn't happen in two thousand thirteen five years ago. The game has really taken a precipitous turn toward you. You're letting the kids play. It's major league baseball own flogging. So when a pitcher takes issue with that you can't help it scratch your head at what's going on his head. I mean, nothing makes sense anymore in this world it didn't then. But I'm just wondering it was a lot of these guys back in the fifties and the six well into the twenty first century. They didn't. They didn't go to college. They weren't refined. They were high school kids, some of them went year for college. Some of them didn't. Now you've got kids that are traveling together. There you ballplayers bonding is a team. You have you have players that go to college. And they understand what life is all about outside the ball field. I'm just I'm just wondering if one of the reasons why this is those is still the way it is. I'm just wondering one of the reasons why is because nobody wants to be the first player or the first organization to say, we're just we're not doing that. That's not us. We're not going to do it. And if there's an incident that occurs on the field, then we'll deal with it as a team later and I'll deal with it as an owner with the owner of the other team. I don't understand. Why can't be done that way? Absolutely. It can. And it occasionally is. But. I on any given ball field on any given team. You're gonna have a hot head and no matter how much organizational control is exerted to that end. You're gonna have some guys take things into their own hands and look, no further than situation that guy is as respected anybody in baseball. He went out to make an argument considerate legitimate or not. I mean over the warnings, right? He wanted to have his team at its own chance to respond. Okay. What was he going to do with that? But argue there was no fighting going on until vaulted deduct out rail and and really brought both teams onto the field. So institutionally everything was under control until until you got involved and the little picture points to a much bigger picture. We get the guy who you know, in my mind initiated this whole movement. He was a guy who brought to the forefront and good on him for it. I mean that's fine. But when, when everyone suddenly taking policing into their own hands to this degree that where the institutional authority falls apart. And we ended up brawling in the middle of a baseball diamond on page one hundred of the baseball coach your book. It said that a profound majority of baseball policing emanates from the pitcher's mound and covers numerous code violations show of disrespect like stealing a base while holding lead or of showboating. So she's watching a home run, or pumping fish after beating at infield single. And then he want to say things that happened in the nineteen eighty six so it seems like that the that the place to start. If you wanted to start policing, this would be with the pitchers would it not? Well, yeah, the picture while the pictures of the ones enforcing it, right. And rear even even back in the eighties. It was rare for a manager to issue direct orders to pitcher to drill. A guy they usually new to do it on their own or they would talk to teammates. Archer. I don't think we've under any orders. There was some talk with thing after the game that survey was was saying that a pitch with coming their way, right? There may have been telegraphing, maybe he had gotten together with Archer who knows, but almost certainly didn't come from the pirates brass. When you've got a guy like that throwing balls at your teammates, you're going to get upset on the other hand Archer didn't really do anything behind the guy. It didn't look like he intended to hit him as gentle, a warning, as you can you can offer. Yeah. What are the things that I mean, there's great human cry. I mean, they're various columns around the country today in BC sports said that the baseball has got to come down hard on Chris Archer nipping in the bud. Here's, here's something I found interesting. And maybe you do to Jason if you look around the thirty major league baseball teams right now. There are no captains no team has a captain this year in major league baseball. And I'm I'm wondering if they talk about baseball players policing themselves, and this is how we take care of this. And this instance, I just wonder if, if there's if there's no locker room leadership is no clubhouse leadership with a defacto captain on any of the thirty major league baseball teams that it seems like it's left up to the twenty. I five odd players on each team to, you know, make up their own rules on that. I just wonder how how much captain Louis baseball in two thousand nineteen plays into this at the great point. You know, you can think about the great captains of yesteryear, and how much tone they set in their respective clubhouses from guaranteed, or New York to Bando on the great swing. As teams as went day. So went their teams. And you know one of the comments in the aftermath was was from pirates really fleet. Vasquez, Venezuelan guy who actually took offense that, that someone broke the unwritten rules, which I found interesting, because, you know, Latin American players tend toward the celebrate Tori as opposed to the opposite direction. And one of the things basket said was, Joey Votto, does something like that. He can get away with it. But each is haven't earned that right. Marcation right which, which which is right in line with the unwritten rules history guys on the right to do certain things. And, and so to some degree, that they're, Joey Votto is clearly team leader. He clearly had nothing to do with this. But, but yeah, man. Without those captains I, I think I think he make a great point there. There is a vacuum at the top of the food chain. We're chatting with Jason turbo. He is the author of the baseball codes being ball-stealing sides and brench bench clearing brawls. That's that book has been out. What about five six years now, Jason taking on twenty twenty two? So much. Continued to blog about it at the baseball coach dot com. You know, your current book is just fantastic. You were kind enough to send you a copy of dynamic bombastic, fantastic. Reggie Raleigh catfish. Charlie finley. It is the dynasty, that is the or was the.

"Scrolling on the toilet. Like, what am I gonna talk super inform, Nick, right? Has taken the lane of I'm just going to be more informed than everyone gas bag. Yeah. He just works. He consumes so much, much probably from much can be healthy. Yeah. You consumes weights, much can't because you can't. Here's the thing that Nick, right? The lane. He's occupying Mike is and you've seen it happen. Recently to the goats, even a Smith where he'll stumble around every once in a while and make mistakes, you can't be an expert on everything. There's not time. There's not time for you to be an expert on every damn thing happening in sport disagree. Nick reds proven that wrong felon you. He is an expert on everything if he doesn't know good on hockey, he can give them give them ten minutes to prepare on hockey. But wait a minute to go on the Cup. You give students ten minutes to prepare got just learned preparation last. But he can't handle a follow up. That's. By initial, we'll be everything that you want. But don't ask anything after failing. If you ask a follow tailor made for it to Beijing. Back and forth back into us tailor made for like a Snapchat video on. Floor. You like put out there yesterday pucks. We're trying to get like twenty million dollars out of a settlement for the oil spill the Deepwater Horizon. Now. I didn't understand that. I think click the article can you explain it to me how they were doing? So I started reading some this is where you're taking it after well asked for most credible source you're going to oil spills and flory Because. lawyer. Listen to this guy, Florio's, former lawyer writer, I guess, he's always a lawyer. But so he started doing digging, and from the part that I read while I was on the toilet. This is what occurred they had to prove, I guess, to get part of the settlement from the BP oil spill they had to prove like year-over-year loss. So they had projections from one year, and you had to show like a three month span, and a certain amount of loss. So the months that they submitted were something like April through July, which is not a time where an NFL team would be making a ton of money. And I think the part of what was going on there is they got some sort of money, one year that they didn't get the other year. So they were using this as like a way of showing that they didn't meet the threshold that they needed to, and that the BP oil spill somehow cost the money they get twenty million dollars. And the court said, no that did not happen. So they didn't get the money, one of the real victims of the deep water, but he was very complicated. And there was a lot to read their and I honestly had to just hop in the shower and didn't have time to finish the article, but from what I gathered that's exactly what occurred. Like what, what kind of reputation of the glazers have with international soccer because that's the Tampa Bay quiet as it's kept. That's a clown show like that's that is a clown show at the top of the organization. So when the glazers got there through the glazers, right, not the grazers the grazers are the production, family Glazer's when they first got there. They had a really good team, sir. Alex had institute instituted such great template process in Manchester United with so hogging the you're the English cups and had a lot of European success as years have gone on, and they remove themselves from that all time manager, sir. Alex was a greatest manager. I think in the history of English football and they've been left to their own devices. It's been pretty much an embarrassing disaster, followed by embarrassing disaster this season. They're out of the Champions League, which remained United is unacceptable. They're not even in your Roper..

"It should be at the athletic department, that you don't think Dan Mullen, if you wanted this home, and I'm happy, you know, the strolls into the athletic. He is the chemo. He can get it done. He can get it done. And he doesn't get it done with sure I wouldn't be opposed to it. If he wanted to done, he'd say, I'm gonna go make this happen, right? It's, it's just grandstanding because Florida has never the university of Miami would absolutely do this. They want a piece of Florida have honored a piece of Florida, every year since it, gator flop. The university of Florida's one that doesn't wanna play this game doesn't want to and just because Dan Mullins all cocky about it, then it's not gonna do anything for me. Shut up dude. You're worse than Miami as much crap is Miami gets nationally for always thinking that they're back been better. Right. Then I understand all of this. But again, it feels like the people you should be pointing your anger at is the Atlantic. But then Mullen said something that was grandstanding the fans to coach, the oh, the flip flops in cargo shorts and visors and fishing blue shirt, get outta here. David good fan base. Oh, oh, do they because when they were struggling that the swamp looked pretty empty, and there's nothing to do in the puddle wrap down Mr. two bids? And they have Alberton Obeida, what d- alligators Albert's the alligator, and how his wife and no idea alligator. You know their names. Doesn't gator grow, then you don't know Mr. to bits that's the guy that runs out. And he's gonna sue stupid for eating that concludes local talk who's the sports media person. You guys go to when there's like the topic of the day, like something like the Bill Buckner thing yesterday. The Lakers thing who's the guy you go to. They're like this guy's gonna give me something reasonable something interesting, something I haven't heard like who's the first name of you guys think I'll do guts. Thank you. And the other nominees on now. I'd go Bomani though mine. That's a good one. I have a nomination Gloria. Ooh, I go es VP his Bill Buckner thing. His one. Big thing. I didn't stay on his watch it right. It's on the internet. The next day, I'm serious about I'm actually not making a joke that dude, he's just always so reasonable any he's saying things that I'm always like, man. That's, that's it, Chris. It's amazing that Scott van pelt has been able to occupy the lane of reasonable like that you don't get to do that at ESPN reasonable guy doesn't exist. He's made it as reasonable crazy, doesn't make you gotta be off on the extreme somewhere doing wacky jazz, hands, like God or you're just another one of the anchors. I mean granted he does get like planet out. He writes them, so it's not like he's like you're on radio live radio. So you're someone that I think people would nominate for this, but you're just going off the cuff. A lot of times. He gets the right out stuff. And what you do it by sport, though. Right. If something happens in baseball, you want Kirk shins history of it. Do you not do not do it by sport? You wouldn't go to Kirch on anything else on the Dan, I do about the situation like with Buckner. I want Bob Ryan. That's who I want. I want to hear from Bob Ryan, maybe Bill Simmons, something like that. You know, but I actually what made me think of this was his one big thing on the Buckner thing if you want, it's really good. And what did he say? What? Honestly, it's nothing even that you haven't heard. It's, it's kind of your take just a little better about just like we never me, basically. Same people were me, cruel. He does thing where the puts a organizes a papers on his ass and turned slice. So get that from the Brian Gumbo school of broadcasting, but he sort of looks up at a camera that's swooping down because we have a bigger budget. It's pretty incredible. I go to Nick. Right. Because at do congenitally content out of nothing. And sometimes, I'm just scrolling on the toilet. Like, what am I gonna talk super inform, Nick, right? "If you guys have nothing else wants a local topic at one's a national topic. What do you what do you guys want local locals, go to anoint because it's a Miami hurricane? Stop for Westport after your topics I have an important update to something we did yesterday. Go ahead. I see the floor go with you Horton update. Okay. Just very quickly. So if you guys were listening yesterday right around this time you remember that I told a tale of lovely angel of a man who let me three steaks, and I was on a quest to find him so that I could return said stakes. Not. Yeah. Exactly not meet sakes. But like tent stakes to hold the tent down. So when flyway and kill people man was basically a hero long story short. He reached out to me yesterday. You're gonna say long story short on a story, while yes we've from. Yes, we were on a quest to find him and mission accomplished. We found him and he's going to get his stakes back. So thank you to everybody that reached out and helped me find this missing person. The helping container yet hoping container. I think this is the first successful. Well, no, we save that marriage last week. All so no, I guess, time will tell you feel great about it. Yeah. So the local, you wanna go local because I'm warning you right now, the local topic is Miami hurricanes. And you know how I get national? Let's go national, you know how we've talked about the idea before I'm super in on this idea. I've mentioned it a couple of times, Adam silver has not been shy about trying to investigate whether or not to add another trophy in to the NBA. I was surprised to see him say that. And of course they're progressive. So they're going to take some of the stuff that soccer does they're going to surprise to see silver say that Mark sign has been on this be for awhile. Adam silver's, always hinted at the idea of like an FA Cup style tournament. So the NBA this is according to Mark Stein has considered implementing a soccer style Cup or play in tournament to get the final playoff spots in the middle of the season around all-star break time, how exciting. Is this because they've come to realize look, LeBron can't win a trophy every year? So let's give them. That's what they've come to realize, I think, a lot of markets, check out on the idea because and that sport more than any, you can sort of assume who's going to be there at the end. And now if you add a single limitation random style tournament, you have a legit shot at another market. Perhaps even a smaller market being happy about something going all out for an additional trophy. I think this is such a brilliant idea, easy to what's the harm. It's and you can sell it as a separate TV contract. And you can sell the rights to a totally different broadcast partner. It's embarrassing. Congratulations. You're the champion of the losers are going to put a banner up in your. Oh my God. Look ninth plays those two. Well, so bad t shirts, please the warriors can conceivably win this trophy to. So can you imagine the warriors? We won a double in one season. We won all the trophies that just adds to the majesty of the Golden State Warriors, doesn't it? Are we talking about where it could be a tournament where they're fighting for the final playoff spot? I heard you mention that. Yes. So that's one of two things that were thrown out, whether it's its own individual Cup, which personally, I like to see that because, as a European soccer fan, I like the fact that lower tier teams have a shot to go for something all out for something. Then you have great upsets nation style. I like the idea of them playing for the final playoffs by you wouldn't like that all the crappy teams at the bottom of the standings. Get the play a tournament on their own and the winner of that tournament gets to make the playoffs. Like, what if that was in baseball in the Marlins right now could start a little tournament that if they want it, they would actually make the playoffs..

"I'm gonna even give you the years the years of two thousand and two thousand and six give me a pair of teammates that won Gold Gloves in the same year on two different teams. It can't be the same. It's it's the same two players that won Gold Gloves the same exact year and while they did that in those seasons they played for different teams. Okay. So two thousand they were on one team together in two thousand six they were on another team together. I'm giving you the years, folks think of an all time great defensive player tandem, a guy that would think of perennial glove winners. You've short-circuited my mind because now I'm just picturing double play combinations. That were traded even though you didn't say it can get a double play combination. What do you think while you're thinking about that? Other trivia question. What do you think in terms of Gold Gloves is the greatest double play combination of all time? I'll give you a hint to or tied for first. This is before time though it was a all this was one of one of them's in the AL one of them's in the day, and will might probably not the two thousand six the previous question is Roberto Alamar in the previous biology dozen six was a little pass Roberto Alamar, sign up. However, you mentioned Roberto Alamar, he was in a great double-play combination team with Omar Vizquel, but they won three. So they are second behind this. These two tandems that were in the seventies think of seventies baseball. Seventies baseball who was running things in the seventies, the Oakland A's were running things the Yankees or the big red machine. Yeah. So Dave Concepcion Joe Morgan had four-goal gloves as a tandem, and Mark Bellinger, and Bobby Grinch for the Orioles had four people sleep on grit, and Bellinger. I know it is I know who it is the two thousand and today cheated a little bit. I started googling two thousand six and I realized who it was. I'll give you a hint here. The teams since you know the. Texas Rangers in Detroit Tigers. Oh, oh, we'll Pudge. Yes. Yeah. I'm sorry. Ruben game sorry, who is the venture, the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers. It's been a gambler. Kenny rogers. The World Series where you had the thing on his hand. The group the group and he was cheating. I love Kenny Rogers, he was such a jerk. He's so mean gambler he was mean to people that is what I remember about Kenny Rogers that he was mean to people was, torii hunter on that team on that Tigers team and six so answer. My question is story hunter, a hall of Famer and now that you've had the appropriate stats? I still don't think he's a whole. Donlevatar. I have to get out of here. How do I do this without dropping names here? I haven't dinner with Dan Marino still gods. I guess there's no way to do it without dropping it, and I have to go to dinner would have been fine. These, these are show with the stugatz on the tickets. So we got caught up in Derek Dietrich, and torii hunter and Mike trivia challenge, and who can forget Billy's baseball roundup, but I do have two topics that I'd like to discuss..

I need some help here because there is the possibility is there, not with Chris that he just told us about how much he cares about his softball team. Is it not possible? We haven't been able to do this show in ten years, when we discovered that stugatz was serious softball guy that he would go out with either black that he would do chatter. What kind of questions do you think we can ask Chris to see if he calls his his pitcher making a good play Greg Maddux? What other softball Dorking this? Do you think we could? If we explored. It's been well chronicled his beef with the, the blue the, the beer league blue. It's it's made changes, by the way, that got back to them that I talked about them on the radio and now anytime, all the empire's. Hey, how're you doing Bill and they do their free to me, anytime someone makes a really nice diving play none on that. Today thing that you have the power to get them like on sports center. Right. Hey, man. This is why we made this call, like I was just thinking this, this and that, and I was like, that's right. You'd better. Explain yourself to me. Some of these names on this gold glove list. Guys, Andy LaRoche. Oh, Adam LaRoche. You remember the laroche's. They were a little sleepy the both of them. Oh man. Droopy eyed. "And she just kept saying, magic over and over again. So then I just started referring to him as a Madge off clearly. Yeah. Everybody remembers thing with Derek Dietrich where I just started calling him the D And no one remembers that hours good. I mean riddles his nickname's gotta be Ridler. Now you've got to imagine. But they're experimenting with him in centerfield. And Lewis Brinson has been moved to right field in the minors sort of addressing which you've always said, which is just a terrible because they got rid of every good outfielder. So they now need outfielder you shocked at how much I know about the Marlins minor league system has I'm surprising myself. I'm remembering this correctly, and I could be wrong. I remember on opening day. They had people's nicknames next to them. So you get to know the player whatever and I think JT riddles nickname was t- because I guess, JT was too long. I could be wrong but I know there was someone that had just simply one letter. As their nickname. And it was like a very simple name that didn't need to be short. I liked how JT riddle and then we had JT real Mito, and they both one of them puts the dot in between Jay and the team. And one of them does. I don't remember which one which but they like we're both like no. You put the dots and the other one was like, no never dot so someone should have been named Jay, Don or something like, right? We welcome in Dan Le Batard are resonant Derek Dietrich expert who yesterday for some reason, said that separated himself from his comment Dietrich was a minor league hitter. Yeah. You put several years there that weren't there that you said this last season that they're Dietrich was a minor league ball black. He's berry bonds. It was it was two years ago Barry Bonds, and he hit three home runs yesterday. How many heads does he have this, easiest thirty hits seventeen of which are home runs? Imported update JT real mutual dots. Thank you very much, Derek Dietrich is now third tied for third. In the National League with home runs. It means two of the top three homerun hitters in the National League or Christian yelich Derek Dietrich. I don't think it's fair to hold Dietrich against the Marlins. I don't and not just because I was wrong about him like they waived him. They simply wave claimed him. They weren't trying. Everyone was wrong Marlins were just one of all the other type I feel like the rest of baseball agreed with me when he was waived and all of them said, you know what he's not a major leaguer, did they not agree with at least upset with it. But it was mainly because I just liked Eric Dietrich, and I thought like you know what I mean this team is going to be bad. What does it kill you to have their on your team? But I did not expect us. I don't think anyone did. It'd be great if this year in the homerun derby. It was American League versus former Marlins, and it was just like. Derek Dietrich Christian yelich owes Oona. We could find someone else saying that what a bus of a trade that's been putting he's been injured older problem Marlins killing that trade stand barely plan at all. So he doesn't even make the former Marlins Rosser. You can maybe try to crack the American League man. This is funny. What's happening with their D Derek DJ three homers in a game? And now Furthermore, I'm about this. When he's having that bloop wasn't blue, but it was a double where he was shirtless. A game winning double, and he took off his shirt. It's no lie. It's the background on my computer. Like I'll show you right now. Background. I'm like that. This is the background like you can see it. Yeah. I wanted to put this on a t shirt, but I figured I might run into some sort of legal issues with, like the photographer. He's so hand, he's so hand forced yelich is in that photo. Happy. So happy. Look, how many people are at that, gene. Man more ads than people more more alcohol. This is a big crowd..

"Baseball writers, and I see deadspin posting blog photos of him with his arms outstretched, really, truly one of the great sports photos of our time. The reds are bad, right? They're not great Dietrich yesterday had another three runs. And at one point I don't know if you've got a fourth hit yesterday. But at one point, he had thirty hits on the season seventeen of which were home runs. And I think twelve of them have come against the pirates. So he owns the pirates a couple of nights ago. He almost hit went out of the stadium now. On a balance. But he almost hit went out of the stadium on. Is that state? What does that park called short porch? And now that's great American ballpark. Is it still that who they changed the name? Yeah. Which is not like an easy. I feel like Adam Dunn was the one that lasts would come into that range. And how far he was hitting it. And he had an incredible homerun pimp trot, where it was like super slow he didn't do a baffler but he stayed in east stared. This was like two nights ago at any took his sweet time getting around him. Oh my God. He looks so great. Yeah. His body was looks good. He's keeping in shape. It's incredible. He's talking about how much fun he's having which is kind of disappointing because I feel like everybody always talks about how much fun they have. And maybe it's just me being crazy. But is there a great atmosphere and Cincinnati? Or is he just having fun because he's playing there's just atmosphere while he's also from Ohio he was born in Cleveland. So he's from that area, not that, you know, Cincinnati including the Saint place. He has had one hundred and eighteen at bats. Yeah. To get to seventeen home runs. The seventh fewest at bats by guy with seventeen home runs since one thousand nine hundred sixty one he's in other guys that are ahead of him early guys like bonds pools McGuire. So you had so few at bats, because he signed a minor league deal in wasn't. He wasn't a starter. I think at the beginning of the season he was. I don't know if he was an everyday starter for them, but I think he's played himself. He'll be starting. He was on with that p last night, which was just so great because it was like towards the start of the show, and it's like, wow, they're like five, six minutes in they're interviewing Derek Dietrich. Guns out. Oh, I mean, he looks so great. I was asking about his chain. He said he didn't wanna talk about how much is chain cost because his mom, get mad at him. They put up a graphic, which was it just says, record-setting pace at bats to seventeen home runs. And that it look look at this graphic, Mike, you can't see it on the radio, obviously, but it's berry bonds two thousand one season when he hit seventy three and then Derek jeeter next to it. And he's done this in eighteen fewer bats. And then it just says total with a question Mark is if their teacher has any shot at seventy three shots. So whoever made that graphic like they deserve a raise. So incredible I I'm on the National League home run leaders page right now. Or at least I'm trying to get their no people. He has, like, great personality to apparently that we missed down here like nobody was really in on, like he's gone out there was a game that they played where there's a B situation and he went out and he pretended like he was fighting the beat actually, he got like one of those like, spring things and he was like trying to fumigate fumigate, but he was trying to kill the bees. He one hundred another time dressed like a janitor, because the lights went out and he was trying to fix the lights like he fun guy. Apparently I'm looking at the National League home run leaders number one is Christian yelich with twenty one number two is Cody Bellinger with twenty number three is Derek Dietrich with seventeen hundred with some other players look down a little bit because last night was soon as tied for six right now in the National League..

"Six feet, one hundred ninety five pounds twenty seven years old. It will be his first start against the Ritz here in in two thousand nineteen. So he's on the mound for the pirates as they tried to somehow some way recapture the rapture, they got smoke. Worked in particular by one guy yesterday, and we'll talk about Derek Dietrich here in just a little bit. But he's on the mound today, and it's interesting because he will be opposed today by Anthony desk, funny. Now, let's talk about Anthony desk, Lipponen just for a moment. Great great, great expectations for him this year. I mean everybody was excited about this Khloponin coming back and being healthy finally, and I mean he had a nice start against the pirates on April the seven they out into the fifth inning. But he allowed six earned runs. This has been a problem recently for disco, funny, it last four starts seventeen and two-thirds innings sixteen runs allowed fifteen of which earned Twenty-three hits the let's just say desk, LaFontine could start today, who is a strong start today is the reds, try to be the pirates one more time. Again, I you know, if you look at the reds rotation right now because is the, the affirmed as in Tyler Malley, although he's been all over the map this year has pitched well in certain spots. There's no question Sonny gray has found new life here in Cincinnati. They really need. They really need to step up and and and pitch. Like he's that fourth starter today would be a good day for doing that. But of course, the big story, the overarching story over all of what's happened here in the last couple of days is Derek Dietrich Derek Dietrich is found money. Let's how you look at a guy like Dietrich because he was on the scrap heap, the Marlins didn't want him anymore. He was looking for work in, in a real real real sense. He is kind of like the modern day scooter Janette found new life. You're in Cincinnati right now Anthony right now. Derek Dietrich has seventeen home runs. He is thirty four RBI in his major league career before arriving here. Dietrich only had sixty home runs. It's got seventeen now in just one hundred eighteen at bats, but what's really impresses president is what he's done here in the course of the last seven games. He is twenty one at bats. He has three walks have twenty four plate appearances in his last seven games. He has seven hits in those twenty one at bats six have been home runs six have been home runs. This is work. It's even more bizarre. Six. Home runs in those twenty one at bats St. six strikeouts, as well in those twenty one at bats, which means. In those twenty one at bats only nine times has the ball touch the ground. And of course, Dietrich was just absolute absolute dope last night. With three home runs. The only thing that may be able to stop Dietrich is the is the weather, and you may be asking yourself is Derek Dietrich in is there Dietrich in the starting lineup today. They would have to have David Bill committed if he wasn't he's batting fifth, and he's at first base today and see. Here's the thing, I like about Dietrich. He plays multiple positions. He plays multiple positions. He can play. You can play I he can play second. He can play corner outfield. And there's a big wonderment now while wounded scooter, come back, you know who you know who, who did he take at bats away from where whereas whereas Dietrich going to play how they make all his, we'll, we'll find out one Janette comes back. I don't think we'll see him a great American ballpark before July fourth, but with Dietrich you have options. And if he's still hitting the ball the way he's been hitting the ball so far this season. You'll find a place for them. Jesse Winker doesn't have to play every game, not until he starts hitting better Puig has been struggling. He's been hitting the ball better of late. But you know, let's face it he's still to twenty hitter only gets on base. Twenty six percent of the time. Sure. He's got ten home runs and thirty one RBI. He's with fifty one times. Is it a given that Cui has to play every game? Could you concoct some sort of scenario where Dietrich would get enough at bats and get enough games? If you played him at first if you played at second if you played them in a corner outfield spot, and let's say of the seven games scheduled in a given week. Why couldn't you play him? A minimum of five times, now, this is all predicated on whether or not. Derek Dietrich continues to hit the ball the way he's hit the ball so far. But I would submit, and I would I would submit strongly that you find a place for this guy. This is going to be a real test for David bell, and his managerial skills. You're massaging egos. You're making sure players that have to sit oil, this got to play make sure they understand. Hey, you're still a part of this team. But it's kind of interesting. It really is that Dietrich who I think is only making two million dollars. This year was let go by club that maybe the worst in baseball and I don't think you'd be hard pressed to find any team in baseball right now. That would be any worse than the Miami Marlins. I mean good Lord. I mean they're I mean, yes, you've got Baltimore. Baltimore is not good. But the Marlins eighteen and thirty four thirteen games out of first place. Why they would let somebody like that goal or not want to invest the kind of time and money into keeping him around. But you'll find a place to play Derek Dietrich, if he continues this way. If he doesn't come back to center, if he doesn't come back to what he was in Miami, which was an okay ballplayer, not a great ball player. I don't think he's going to have many games where he hits three home runs like he had last night. But I think there's a spot for them. Someplace in this roster, somehow even when scooter Janette comes back the real thing, the reds have to worry about isn't just whether or not, they can find a place for Derek Dietrich. The real thing they have to worry about is now can they continue this momentum? They've had going here recently they're now just five games out of first place, and I continue to say this as bad as they were hitting the ball earlier this season to be only five games at a first place is nothing short of a miracle. I think. I don't know whether or not, the, you know, the, the cubs are going to struggle. I don't know whether or not the brewers are going to nip at the heels of the cubs all year, I tend to think so, and I also think Saint Louis is going to be a major factor in this race in the in the in the central division before. It's all over the reds, the real gambit here is do you have enough consistent starting pitching? And they, they have had it so far this year. Do you have enough consistent, hitting and Keith situations to string together, the kind of streak you need to string together to mount the momentum to get to that conversation as to whether or not you're relevant? And it's coming from usual, places Jose. Glazes Derek Dietrich. Jesse Winker is hit the ball. Well, he said the ball on the screws. He's been on lucky Puig is not hit, but he's hit the ball for power and vodka. Although vodka was shown signs of life, here recently to forty two he's not auto his thirty four percent on base percentage. Not vodka. They have gotten a lot from behind the plate this year from Barnhart back. They've gotten very little from. Barnhart. So we'll see. I don't know if they can somehow someway beat the pirates today and escape the seller that is a major major hurdle for them to achieve. We'll find.

"Welcome back into the red postgame show nine to reds. Winter's over the giants tonight a great American ballpark. And let's relive it. Now going back through the highlights the reds had an early lead. In fact, they were up to two one. A you halio Suarez made it five to one with win. One. Big swing in the second and the pitch. Fly ball hit back into deep right center. Hit it. Good. I pitch innings razz lights up. Derek Rodriguez with home run number. Six on the year in the reds. Now have jumped in front by score of five to one. It was wires as eighth home run of the year animated five to one. It was still five to one when Nixon's L came up for the second time in a game and nearly came up with its first major league home run. But Kevin pillar had other thoughts. Having out deep fly dead centerfield since hit it. Well, all the way to the wall cook. No, we cut the baseball. Both the wall. Oh my goodness. What a play by Kevin poor as he rubs Nixon's L of his first home run. Reaching above the wall, not only with his right arm, but his glove as will he climbed into the grass the catch that ball highway robbery. They did he was basically on the grassy knoll behind center field when he caught it reds were leading at six to one when Derek Dietrich came up in the fifth with the bases empty and two outs. Here's a high fly ball that's lifted back into fairly deep right center field and that ball is gonna be out or in its out. That's a home run for Dietrich is third in two nights. Seventy-one Redway since L followed that up a batter later this time. He wasn't going to give any doubt. If they were never ever got that. I just give you a question of somebody to look out. That's another bomb hit back into right field. He's got his firm. They're not going to catch that one. He drove that baby about ten rose up into the mood deck, and right and young Mr. sent Zell tuck with his first major league home run. Opposite field shot their rights. How about that you better get drink? Chris looks like something you might hit up t-. Wow. So may ask you this. Did you like that homerun you liked that you like that? Derek did. Dietrich love that home run. He admired the hell out of that home run. If he stared at that any longer he would have needed to buy a ticket pirates pitcher, Chris Archer, probably hated that home run is much as Dietrich loved it. Aren't you? Probably hated that home run in hated how Dietrich stared at it afterwards because in the top of the fourth when Dietrich came to once again or let him know all about it. And he let him know all about it with a pitch behind Dietrich. You see that's a code enforcement. Warning there. Some guys you can style homerun off of in.
