Maryland state treasurer has told a House panel he is committed to revamping the troubled college savings plan. Derek Davis says they need time and patience, especially in the first year to integrate the 5 29 plans into the treasurer's office. Now, two bills, one that's in the Senate in Annapolis, and the other in the house would transfer responsibility for the Maryland 5 29 college tuition program to the state treasurer's office. The bills would end a prepaid college plan that allows tuition rates to be locked in for state schools. A second plan operates more as an investment plan overseen by an outside manager. But trouble has been brewing with that prepaid plan last year, the board suspended some payments after discovering an accounting software problem that outraged many parents. Well, in recent years, local governments have done more than encourage people to get surveillance cameras for their home. They've even helped them to buy them. Now, Friends stewardess county is doing the same thing after the county council there unanimously approved a measure it hopes will help solve crime. Last November 13 year old Jay is agnew was shot and killed raking leaves in the front yard of his temple hills home. The killer is still at large and agnew's parents juanita and Antoine agnew are adamant. This case would have been solved in a matter of days if we had cameras. You can turn your back in a life can be taken from you within the blink of a knight. A lot of the decision comes down to bottom line and what the cost is. And that'll be figured out later because while the Bill says the county will provide up to $200 for a resident to buy an outdoor camera and more money to store footage, money's tight, so it's not clear yet how much will actually be set aside for the program. Former president Donald Trump both on the campaign trail and in office claimed he had no problem releasing his tax records. This is what he said on Good Morning America in May of 2016. With the audit ends, I'm going to present a that should be before the election. I hope it's before the election. He never followed through on that. A congressional committee hoped to get those tax records as soon as this week, but the U.S. Supreme Court's chief justice John Roberts halted the release. Robert Barnes is covering it for The Washington Post and spoke with northwest news radio's Taylor van seiss. First, remind us of what the House ways and means committee is investigating. Why do they say they need the former president's tax records? Well, they say that they need the records because they are looking into laws that govern and audit presidential tax records. And that this is an investigative function of Congress and it needs to decide whether or not these laws need to be updated or not. Ex-president Trump's lawyers say that it's a phishing expedition that democratic lawmakers have for years tried to expose the Trump's financial records and that they say that that's just a pre-tax for trying to get these records. Up to this point, lower courts found that these lawmakers are indeed entitled to the documents. Why did the chief justice halt the release today? Well, I think mainly the things to remember is this is a temporary halt to it. This came to the court very quickly, an appeals court last week said that it would not stop the release. And the release was scheduled for this coming Thursday. And so Trump's lawyer said to at least temporarily put a hold on this so that the court can consider their arguments. And so the chief justice did put a temporary hold the records will not be released on Thursday and by next Thursday, the House ways and means committee is supposed to respond and tell the Supreme Court its side of this dispute. The former president, we know he appointed three justices to the high court, but it's not as though they've been giving him sweetheart deals all the time, right? He's still been subjected to investigations in and out of office. That's right. The former president and conservatives in general will be happy with the way those justices have voted on important issues. But not very happy with the way they've voted on his request. They didn't take up any of the election challenges that he had hoped for. And so far in these kind of disputes over the release of records, he has not gotten the support of the Supreme Court, including those justices that he nominated. There's a lot more to this that you can read online at Washington Post dot com from Robert Barnes, who covers the Supreme Court for The Washington Post. "30. Do you am I wrong? Do you think PlayStation stars are cool blessing? Do you think this is a cool program? No. In fact, as you're talking, I was looking at the app in my phone and it's like, do you want to sign up? And I was like, no, I don't. I don't. I don't want to sign up. And then like I sat in a list that you talk about it for a little bit and then you got into the oh yeah, you can buy games for points, and I'm sure those points would then can be used to get discounts. And I was like, oh, I should get her for that, shouldn't I? That's actually a good functionality, because that's like. Is that how it works? Can you get discounts from these points? When you buy games, you get points back or coins, or whatever they call that app crash. But you go through and you get it that way. Sorry, not actually spent it that way. But here, as we will read from the one, the only Ethan gosh, a senior reporter at kotaku who tweeted out today his thing. He said, I'm a PlayStation star now. My first collectible tree is in the bag. Now to just buy a brand new game and earn 50 gold coins, AKA 40 cents. Well, what is this program? For comparison, I've got about $15 from game pass playing random games over the last two years. Nintendo eShop gives an automatic 5% credit on all digital purchases. He did follow up. I'm trying to scroll and find it. Somebody did tweet at him and say, oh, there's actually, yeah, Derek Davis tweeted to him just a person, I think. Yeah, I know a little more. Says, seems like we get additional points from a new game purchase. If this is accurate, to which Ethan responded, yeah, it looks like you get a 4% on additional purchases. So it's whatever, but it's like, you know, this incremental ship damage, which is, again, that part is fine. It's better than nothing. Hey, cool. Opt in when you buy stuff digitally, you get points that eventually, it's kind of how we talked about with the eShop on Nintendo. Yeah. And there's sometimes to buy stuff. And it's like, oh, I got enough Nintendo coins. Sure. Why not go for it? I think it gets round out. The weird Nintendo stuff. But that eShop system we were getting points back to then get discounts on digital purchases is actually fucking great. I use it all the time. I get like $5 off $10 off certain things all the time. So shout out to that. And that is the one reason why I was like, I should get this PlayStation stars thing, because I do like that system. And then I clicked join and then it said something went wrong. And so it's day one. So we just talked about right. It's probably getting DDOS attacks just like Overwatch. You think there's a DDOS team out there? I don't know if their teams. There's a bigger thing about it. The bigger thing to do is it is, I think, classic PlayStation. Of over complicating a simple thing people want. People love loyalty programs. They love to go buy something and get rewarded, even if it is 40 cents or the bonus coins or whatever. It's going to actually net out to be on all these coins, right? That's great. That's cool. Challenges to get more of those coins, that's great. Blah blah blah. At what point are they going to completely give up on these digital trophy room, whatever goods, this is so stupid. Nobody wants this. Nobody cares about it. Nobody is ever going to be like, look at the awesome fucking thing I got. Which means that I think within the next year and a half, they will quietly stop putting out new fucking 3D PS5s in vitas or whatever the hell they're going to put out there for you to grow. Why are you making this more complicated? Give them discounts on the store, let people let them show their trophies like we were talking about earlier. You just put those up and not even like something super special. Just a stamp book, a little passport, a little PlayStation passport. Think of PSN profiles. Where I can go and I can change the top of my banner to what I like. It's like, here's your trophy milestones. Here's your hardest ones you've ever gotten, stuff like that. Give that function out. Just give that function. That's all you needed to do if you're trying to really incentivize people. Who's looking at this and again, I love to look at it, but it's crashing on, don't even get me started on Merck city 64 over there. But like you go into the challenges, if I can load it, and I probably can't. No, the campaign is like, pear, buy a bunch of these games. And I was like, all right, like, yeah, and you get this fucking thing. What the hell's going on? You're wasting your time PlayStation. You are wasting your time on this. These little spinny things and looks are the same waste of time. The accolades were. But it's like, I want to say they're a waste of time. You look at, again, throw it back up. My fucking God award trophy case with these fucking three little JPEGs on it. You didn't spend that much time on it either. So I'm not too worried about the amount of time you're gonna walk away from it. I understand. I'm not mad about it. I'm disappointed. This isn't something we wanted. You're disappointed. Yeah, I think a lot of the disappointment for me also comes from the fact that we can visualize so many better ways to do this. I think if PlayStation came to us and they're like, hey, Greg bless, and let's throw in Janet for PSLV and bear for PS love you, right? PSL B squad. We want you guys to advise us on how we should do a loyalty loyalty program. I think we'd be able to come up with something banger, right? Because we're all nerds here. We all love the little intricacies. How cool. I mean, how cool is it? Think about it, how cool it was when you get that email from PlayStation. It's just like, hey, you're one of the first .1% people, the platinum, whatever game here, what you see with femur, an icon or whatever. Like even just the acknowledgment of it, like, oh, that's pretty cool.

"Okay so here. We are so for for the survivor. Pick i'll i'll go ahead and start with Same thing ident- last week who's playing detroit and green bay. Aaron rodgers going to absolutely torch them in half. I've i've kind of feel sorry for him because he was not very happy. I'm sure with that laws in how that team put a how their team played so. And i'm probably not gonna do this every week because obviously detroit won't go six own seventeenth her in owen. Seventeen but this week. It just seemed too easy just to say when i was looking through everything i that was the first one i saw that just immediately jumped off the page at me and then another one that i really like for survivor is the honestly the teddy bridgewater and company. I think that they that that would be a potential. Another good Survivor pick so going with going with denver on on that one as well denver and against jacksonville davir. Yeah that one's in jacksonville. The other one. Obviously that's gonna sparking a lot of debate or talk. Is this the one here. The heck at the browns. They're on that's another one. Yeah we'll get spread their anywhere from twelve and a half to thirteen points in favor of the browns. they're so those are a couple of Couple of different things. And obviously this is a cool site. Utilize dot com. You can kind of see where you can may be placed bats that are most in your favor so check that out. Most definitely any other plays plays i guess. Maybe maybe let's do a you know a little Player beware of the week or something you know not necessarily kind of what kind of strategy that they should be. you know. obviously leagues are different. But what kind of strategy would you kinda. Maybe shy away from this week. If you having yes. So i would probably say steer clear of the i would say the receivers in that In that cleveland game. Maybe because i know the the points. Total is very high. But i also see them. Just say hey run the ball. Run the ball run. The ball run will exactly. So maybe maybe steer clear of Baker mayfield and i mean. Obviously they're gonna have to do something to get up on the team soda. Maybe jarvis landry catches the touchdown. god's like dad but That would that would be my kind of stay away Right there all right like it here once again. "This is wls am eight five. I'm jonathan wilson maryland. Democratic officials are expressing concern over governor leary hogan's decision to end. Pandemic unemployment benefits in july hogan made the announcement yesterday saying the benefits. Were no longer necessary. Because seventy percent of residents are now vaccinated and he said jobs are in quote good supply. Wmu's maryland reporter. Dominique ribbon seo is with us now to talk us through the debate. Hi there dominic. Hey jonathan so i why is hogan ending enhanced unemployment benefits a two months earlier than scheduled right. The federal government's american rescue plan extends the benefits through september. Six hogan is one of twenty four state governors to end the extended benefit because many businesses are facing a severe shortage of workers. And he says quote he's looking to get more marylanders back to work and jump start the economy. The idea being that getting rid of the unemployment benefit would get people back to work Since the pandemic began maryland has distributed more than twelve point. Three billion dollars in an employment benefits to more than seven hundred and thirty thousand marylanders. Okay so as we sit. At the top of the democratically controlled. Legislature is expressing. Great concern about this. Is there anything the state legislature can do to reverse the decision if they want to not right now the maryland general assembly isn't in the session right now. But prince george's county. Doug derek davis. He's chair of the houses economic matters. Committee he says he thinks the bigger issue is really. Wages are too low in the state when the legislature does meet again in january. He says he intends to propose that the timeline to to fifteen dollars minimum wage be sped up that means in two thousand nineteen law make woke i in two thousand nineteen lawmakers agreed that businesses with fifteen or more employees would have to move to the fifteen dollars an hour minimum wage by twenty twenty-five under davis new proposal businesses with fifteen or more employees would have to move to the fifteen dollars an hour minimum wage by twenty twenty two and those with fifteen or less would move to it by twenty twenty. Three all right so you know there. Been a lot of people speaking out against hogan's decision including some local democratic officials. Maybe even some who might be interested in running for governor. So what are they saying right. I mean i one state. Comptroller peter franco. He's a who's running for governor in twenty twenty two said today that the state is forgoing one point five billion dollars in additional federal stimulus. Those extended unemployment benefits has been economic multipliers and have helped. Our local businesses helped the economy everywhere in the state of maryland. Much more broadly than the benefit recipients and spokesperson for the hospitality workers union unite. Here says hogan is out of touch with the industry trends and the experiences of workers they say at least eighty five percent of their members are still out of work and finally montgomery county. Executive mark eldridge said doesn't make sense to end the benefit if people can't find a job okay. So this is a question. Not just for maryland but around the country is there actual evidence that unemployment benefits discouraged workers from actually returning to jobs so analysts from j. P. morgan chase say said they found little evidence that this extended unemployment benefit discourage people from returning to work. They explain that when unemployment insurance benefits were expiring back. In july there were no sustained increase in the number of people returning to the workforce meaning that the supplemental payments were not causing large job. Search disincentive analysts. Also found that as of october at least half of the jobless workers were facing long term unemployment. so did larry hogan address those issues. I mean if the enhanced benefits ending early don't get people back to work. And what is hogan gonna say. Well the state's department of labor is pushing a work-sharing program. It's a voluntary program which allows employers to reduce employees hours by ten to sixty percent. Which would be an alternative to laying off. Workers employees are still eligible to collect partial unemployment benefits. And this program is funded through the cares act but again. This is just a voluntary program and it also doesn't help those workers who are part of the gig. Economy are seasonal temporary workers. Those people are not eligible for this program. All right that is. Wmu's dominic ribbon. Vanessa unpacking the decision. The somewhat controversial decision from maryland governor larry hogan to end pandemic unemployment benefits of bit early. Thanks dominique thanks donovan..
