Senators beat Rangers 5-3 to spoil Patrick Kane's debut
"The debut of a new ranger was spoiled by a pair of old ones as the senators earned a 5 three win at Madison Square Garden. Derek Broussard scored twice to back fellow X ranger camp Talbot, who stopped 29 shots. Talbot denied Patrick Kane with a pad save with 5 minutes left in the third. Cain was playing for the first time since the rangers acquired him from the Blackhawks this week. It would be nice to kind of settle in. Get a couple practices and kind of understand the way they want to play. The blue shirts led three to two until Broussard scored on an assist from Claude Giroux, who provided the tie breaking goal less than two minutes later. I'm Dave fairy.

"Forwards this season we've played 305 one 5 minutes. He's 286 and points per 60 and for pens fans. The guys around him directly above him as Derek Broussard, former Penn's legend, and directly behind them our Oscars on quiz and Sam lafferty, two other penguins legends. I think there's a path for success or kind of revitalization for grantland here because he is still only technically 31 years old. I think if you watch him, you know, he's still got those playmaking chops in terms of passing ability. He can set the puck up on a platter for shooters and it's not like an entirely useless skill by any means. I just think that for this penguin's team in particular, with what they already have in place for him to reach that sort of success, they're almost certainly going to have to play them on the second line with malkin and Zucker, right? And that seems to be kind of totally besides the point of what they need, which is someone who can sort of create for others to drive play, especially on a third line, but just generally in the bottom 6. And so to be paying a premium to add to something that you don't necessarily even need more of is kind of the thing I keep coming back to of trying to find the logic in this particular edition. Well, the thing that I keep going back to is all year we've been hearing about how bad the penguin salary cap situation is and how they don't have the flexibility to really make a move. And over the past week, through a stroke of good luck in St. Louis taking kapanen's deal through the waiver moves through trading teddy bluder, they actually gave themselves enough salary cap space where they could have made a really significant addition, like somebody they could or even two editions that could have really addressed some of their needs. And I can't remember the last time I saw a trade that was so universally hated by everybody. Whether you're a stats person, whether you're an eye test person, nobody understands this. And if you look at what the penguins big as needs are, their bottom 6 has been just a black hole in terms of offense this year where they're not getting anything from those guys. They don't defend particularly well, whether it be from their forwards on the bottom 6 or the defense as a whole. And they brought in a guy that doesn't score a lot of his offense in Nashville was the result of some of the guys that he was playing with on his line where in a few plays in the third line in Pittsburgh. He's going to be playing with Jeff Carter and people that just were not the answer. And if you put him in the top 6, you run the risk of disrupting the two lines that have actually carried them to where they are this year. And he's not a particularly good defensive player. He's not good on the fort check. He doesn't skate as well as it used to be. He just, if you were to create a checklist of all the things the penguins don't need, keep checks all of those boxes and checks almost none of the boxes of what they do need.

"We'll see obviously I have a bunch of dominos have to fall for Jim Harbaugh to be leaving to create that vacancy. So just to circle back real quick on the portal, we mentioned Jackson Dar in passing. But that is a pretty significant, they're losing macro. Link if obviously known for grooming quarterbacks, he has clearly decided that Jackson dart was the guy to get of the various notable quarterbacks that entered the portal. You're there in LA. Around USC, what is almost getting? They're getting a talented quarterback who runs well, the ball jumps out of his hand. There's a lot of work to be done. He's still a young quarterback, right? I think that this is going to be an interesting project. We had him in the game late in the year against UCLA where he had some he did some good things. He did some not so good things, right? You know, I think he's got talent. He was a guy that I think that USC was hoping at the end of the year, at least USC brass was that he was going to shine and that he was going to make the job that much more attractive to whoever wants to, yeah, we don't have a lot of other pieces, but we have a potential first round quarterback here. Obviously, it's gone in a bunch of different directions where they ended up getting the big coach and they're probably getting the big coaches old quarterbacks. We're still sure about that. What's more? We're pretty even after the Bobby anger comes official and Wisconsin. I will still be very, very surprised if Caleb Williams does not end up as a USC Trojan. I thought another really notable transfer portal transaction was Colorado running back former Colorado running back jerk Broussard going to Michigan state, which obviously had great success in the portal last year with getting Kenneth walker from wake forest. I don't know that a lot of people outside the PAC 12 or even familiar with Derek Broussard, but in 2020, the COVID year, he was back 12 offensive player of the year and had some really, really big games. A 187 yards against UCLA 301 yards against Arizona, grannell is a terrible Arizona team. We're not quite as productive this past season. Colorado itself was not particularly productive, but still he had a 151 yard game against Oregon state, a 108 yard game against UCLA. So he's going to Michigan state. I'm not going to just hand him the job, but certainly you would think he's got a really good chance to become there. Primary running back and become a very successful running back. They also got Jalen burger from Wisconsin. So Mel Tucker, another solid job out of the portal. It's interesting. I would have thought Jalen burger would have been the guy more, even Broussard was like you said he was good in a couple of years ago. I don't know. I think because of the success Kenneth walker had, we're kind of like, okay, who's going to be the next one? And they have two good options here. They do, and I'm not guaranteeing that either of them replicates what Kenneth walker did, but I mean, 2020 jerk Broussard was one of the best running backs in the country. So he's got that in him. He's frankly more proven to this point his career than Kenneth walker was who had been kind of a part time player at wake forest. Let's get to some emails. As always send your questions to the audible pod at Gmail dot com. Yeah, so we're almost forgot to mention it's signing day Wednesday that is kind of February sign day is going to become kind of anti climactic because of the December signing day. But it's pretty notable usually for schools that just hired a new coach. And so Tom and del Rey, hey guys, Miami is currently ranked 39th in the country in the 2022 recruiting rankings. That's already significantly better than they were two months ago. Cristobal first took the helmet. Miami, true or false. Miami finished his top 15 in the 2022 class. Bonus true or false, Miami wins the coastal this year. I think they have a better chance of winning the coastal than I think they have of winning of finishing top 15 at this point because they have a lot of ground to cover. They do have some big fish out there, most notably a local product in shemar Stuart, who's a big defensive lineman. And he's a 5 star guy. He played it. He plays a pace, and he it's basically my understanding is between the M and a and M, he visited this past weekend. Now what's tricky is, Mario crystal has made almost no hires on his staff. He has no offensive coordinator has no defensive coordinator. And so there's a few linemen that my understanding is they're expected to commit to them. One of them is a four star who's also from the Pacific Northwest, is a highly regarded offensive lineman. And then there's a few other players that I know they're in the mix for, but there's another 5 star offensive tackle from Seattle, who I am my understanding is he won't sign or announce for maybe another couple of months. So there's that. I, my guess is, even if they get Stuart in a couple of these guys, I just don't think they would be able to vault that high up to get in the top 15. But whether they do or not, here, so sometimes with these recruiting rankings, you got to look at because the class size is very so much. Maybe only has ten commitments. And 9 of them are four stars, which is pretty good. So, yes, they're 38th in the overall rankings as of this recording, but their average is average player score is 92.86,.
