I don't care if it's abortion euthanasia homosexual lifestyle pornography gender change premarital sex extramarital sex. You name it you know the all of these things. All these teachings they're not only oriented toward spiritual wellbeing and heaven and salvation. They're oriented toward love toward emotional health. I mean by love self-sacrificial caring compassionate love you know they're oriented toward that kind of love and and they're oriented towards societal and cultural health As well and of course two good marriages and families that are secure for those nice children. So the point. I'm trying to get to is Listen hard to what the church says because when you hear differently it it's evil spirit. And the first thing he he's got in mind for you is to disobey that law to follow your instincts and your ego at once. You follow your baser instincts in your ego and your in rebellion from god and you separate yourself from expect emptiness alien nation loneliness despair fear and and of course guilt and and at the end of the day a separation that is filled with the kind of darkness in isolation. Just expect it and then when that happens. Don't be surprised if you get what. The american psychiatric association found You get an increase. in depression. anxiety suicidal ita shen suicides themselves impulsively familial tensions and substance abuse et cetera et cetera. So don't be surprised. I mean this is what the devil wants and at the end of the day. He wants to bring us all down. He wants to bring the family down. He wants to bring marriage down. He wants to bring the culture down. He wants to bring it all down and that is his plan. And all i can say is My the whole reason for writing the trilogy is to prove it. And that's when. I think my my mission is to do. I'm not a perfect person. I i don't know why. God chose me to be a spokesman of this but At least I've got enough of a rational mind to say. I think i can make a really good probative case that that Yeah the devil should be exposed in all expose them. even though i'm a very imperfect person myself well praise god that you do. "There is either enormous struggle for one or two people or just kind of this collective like low mood that you really feel is kind of permeating most of society at the same time. One of the things that i find to be. The biggest sources of white privilege and joy in the profession is that you do see the best of people come out. You see resilience you see whole you see amazing ability to overcome adversity. And so. I think that when i see my patients i find myself really focusing on that instead where it helps to give a really positive outlook on life. On what all of us are capable of and of keeping that spirit there that despite the huge huge struggles and challenges our entire world has faced this year that we are resilient right. We've evolved evolutionary over the last know thousands and thousands of years to be strong. And that's what i'm saying. We hear a lot that the holidays are particularly difficult for people from a mental health standpoint. And i wonder how that's different in twenty twenty. It could be that people are not having the added stress of having family over or cooking for a large group of people. But what do you expect in this holiday season when it comes to people state of mind. That's a really important question. So when we think about the reason why mental health exists the model that we use called the bio psychosocial model and what this represents is the three main buckets of what contributes to health being any place along the spectrum that it is from great horrible. And what that breaks down into is bio- biological psycho psychological and social which is a mix of like social and environmental so if we think about those three areas biologically the reason why or one of the reasons why the holidays are especially stressful is around something. Think about something like seasonal affective disorder. The weather changes and that changes the way. Our brain is reacting and the neuro transmitters that are going through our brains certainly have different biological levels when it's rainy or when it's snowing or just kind of overall sense of what. The world looks like from the psychological perspective one of the hardest things that happens around the holidays and again. This is the holidays in general. And then i'll get to what's going on uniquely this year when it comes to the holidays there's such a image out there of the holidays being perfect when we look at the hollywood movies and events stories that we grow up with the holidays are supposed to be this beautiful magical time and the reality especially this year is that families fight. Relationships are hard. You might not get the bonus you're looking for. I know it's stanford no one's getting their annual kind of bonus or or any kind of even raise period and so the expectations and the change in the difference in reality and expectations is around the holidays than any other time. Because you would think and you hope and you're kind of told by all these external signals and cues that you're supposed to be happy and so if you're not then feeling that way or if there's some disappointment like you have an argument with your partner or your parents have different expectations than all of that ends up really weighing on you because the image you imagined the image that you might even have been hoping for and looking forward to in september october november. It doesn't actually happen. So that disconnect ends up leading to a lot of psychological damage in difficulty and then finally we have the social thing about the social. We think of social environmental historical and a little bit of those areas. And what happens. There is that you're having multiple opportunities to feel better. Your baby putting up the christmas tree or caroline or going to a series of holiday parties. And that's kind of what your environment looks like. Some of the things that actually ended up being especially hard around the environment actually are related to substances. We see a big increase in drinking in using other substances like marijuana or other recreational drugs and wild that ends up maybe having a short term benefit or necessarily Benefit make someone feel better in the short term in the long term all of these really end up worsening depression worsening anxiety. So that's why we realized that the holidays are especially hard for people and then to get to the second part of your question around what's different this year. Many many things. I think it depends on who you are. And what brings you joy all. Give myself example. You know i'm very extroverted. And so i love being able to go to parties and meet new people and reconnect with pass friends and everything and even i love throwing parties. Throwing parties is one of my favorite things period. And saying yeah yeah and to have that taken away or to only be able to do it for one or two people instead of like ten twenty fifty one hundred people for me. That was always one source of joy and something. I really look forward to. And that's taken away right and for everyone now across the country across the world things that normally had helped us stay resilient or when times were tough over the holidays. The ways over the years that we've learned to cope have been taken away whether that's going to a movie by yourself and watching something that makes you feel happy through these parties. All wrap that up with one bought which is around hope at one of the things. I think the holidays are just so classic. Four is the sense of hope and hope ends up being really really important. We actually see that. The brain changes in terms of the brain chemistry and when people are hopeful endorphins get produced and that ends up leading to an improved sense of wellbeing and all people end up being more calm more open and everything and this year in particular. I think for a lot of people. They felt both a sense of decreased. Hope as well as just like chronic uncertainty in a way that we've never had to experience before so those two things in combination. It's almost like the things that were positive have been kind of temporarily removed. And then we've had all these added kind of negative stressors which made it very very hard over the past year. I'm sure you have watched the decline in mental health measures on broad scale. And i wonder if that also concerns you at least a little for the holidays because i'm sure that many people are either not going to therapy because they have lost their job. Maybe they've lost their healthcare. Maybe they have reservations about seeing a therapist. And maybe just that they don't wanna use zoom and in person appointments aren't available and so you have sort of a bad combination of mental health measures declining and people not seeking help. What kind of advice can you give people on how to take care of themselves. Yeah well first of all. You're absolutely right. I'm very very concerned about what's going on right now. We're seeing rates almost double across the board and especially in racial minority communities in particular the black and african american communities as well as in some cases the latino communities in asian communities we're seeing even higher three x increase in certain conditions. And certainly this overlap with what we've experienced this year around systemic racism and brutality and everything and it's very concerning just seeing these unprecedented rates at the same time what i actually would say as while there are absolutely folks who have lost their health insurance and who are not seeking care what i actually have seen for. An overall trend is one of the silver linings. Actually my style for others in the field have talked about this year is that we've seen a huge acceleration in stigma decreasing. I give this example. That i start my day with the new york times and before virus there probably be an article on anxiety or stress or some mental health issue on the front page. Maybe once a week but probably not even bad versus now. It's really almost every single day. That i see something whether it might be the parenting section of the well section or even just overall health science society that people are talking about struggling with mental health it levels that they never were before and not just in general kind of broader society but people who are influencers right in at everything from celebrities to politicians and when these messages are then getting out there that much more. What i'm pleasantly surprised to see is people being a lot more willing to say i'm struggling. I'm having hard time and taking that next step of and i think i need to get help. I think that right now. What help has looked like for. A lot of people is just talking about it. Which is a really really important first step. I hope that what can happen in the coming months is to see more like really getting kind of serious professional care. That is so important. I think everything that you brought up around. If the financial resources are lower or people zoom fatigue and a whole host of reasons. Why people may not see cal what i do think i've seen as those who already had sought out help seemed to be actually doing a good job of staying consistent and in fact one of the statistics. I've been sharing with people. That in my own practice at stanford i have the practice at stanford and a private practice by private. Practice rates are usually great. People come almost all the time but at stanford the no show rate used to be anywhere from like maybe ten twenty percent sometimes been sunny palo alto and so sometimes when it was raining or things like that it would be even lower as people were less likely to leave or be out saw but since coronavirus started. I've really had like almost ninety nine. One hundred percent attendance rate so to me. That's a really good sign that is as had people who are already engaged in this system seem to be doing a good job of continuing but how do we get people who have never been a part of healthcare system. "Back on the zero hour. This is Richard RJ s cow on I always have a lot to talk about with my next guest. She's been on the show a number of times always look forward to having him Danny shirt season. We've introduced him in the past on this program has major Danny shirt season. He is out of the armed forces. Now and writing about his experiences in a more personal way. So I wanted to talk to him about that as well as a couple of other recent developments in the foreign policy slash military strategy world. So maybe we'll get to all of that the conversation that ensues, but first of all, Danny Shearson. Welcome back to the program. Thanks for having me. So glad to be on. This is the first time. I'll be on. Right. Don't have to lead off with a disclaimer. So I'm I am as always speaking for myself. But now, I can say anything I want. All right. Good. Well, what have you wanted to say all this time that you haven't been able to say because you are a member of the armed forces it. Well, I certainly wanted to be more critical of some of the domestic and foreign policy the president. I've already been critical, but I've always had to be careful not to be quote contemptuous. Which is a very subjective terminology, and it has kept me from calling out some the bigotry racism and white nationalism of the commander in chief. But now, I'm quite ready to do that. I think it displays itself internally in domestic policy as well as externally, and we see that in the bullying that's going on once again in central and South America. Absolutely. And just to be clear for our listeners who might not know when you're in the armed forces. You're in a chain command that. That ends weather begins with the president of the United States. So I would so to speak of him, quote, unquote contemptuously. However, you define that is to are the argument is it undermines the chain of command, right? Yeah. That's correct. In fact, I had to take about four months off of writing last year as you remember because I was under investigation for contemptuous words against the president. And the secretary of defense now. Luckily, I was essentially exonerated and got back to work. But yeah, they put me on a freeze order. So, you know, writing while on active duty, it's rare and it's difficult. Yeah. Well, good for you for doing a issued a lot of courage and doing it. And I want to talk to you a little more about that as our conversation unfold. I also, by the way, you had a heck of a challenge writing about the policies and behavior this president without displaying. What might be called contempt giving given the contemptible nature so many policy and personal decisions. It's been a tough a tough tight rope to walk. Yeah. Truly was. I mean, just being unable to call out some of the nepotism in the administration some of the races, and that really just encapsulate. So much of what this president does both at home and abroad was very very difficult. And and I'm glad field speak out. Not because I want to show contempt for any public figure. But because I want to speak truth to power, and I've tried to do that while in uniform. And now that I'm out now that I'm retired. I hope to do even more because that truly is patriotism. There's no question about it that it that it is patriotism interests to continue on the Trump throughout a little bit. Taking as as completely an eight political stand as I possibly can. And obviously, I if you know anything about me, I'm a political creature in many ways, but I am capable of thinking apolitically, and from my most political point of view, the one thing that was promised maybe promising as an overly strong word. But. Interesting about Donald Trump the candidate and one in my view, one of the reasons why he won and became president is that he challenged. The military national security orthodoxy of this country's political and media and military elites in my opinion. When he ran for president, you know, he challenged the idea that we needed to be an Iraq stated falsely. But he stated that he had always been against the invasion of Iraq that we felt we didn't need to maintain. What you or I might describe as an empire basis around the world, the massive military presence, and in so many countries, and in that sense, he was a very unorthodox mainstream politician, I can't think of a presidential candidate from either party or Senator for that matter coup had challenged the foreign policy orthodoxy in quite that way. So I do believe that helped him get elected. Now he hasn't governed in the same way as. You know, and it's a shame because I've given the credit to the president where it's been do. And actually some of my worst attacks have come from the left, which is odd because if I had to pigeon hole myself, I'm probably a progressive, but I took real lot of flack from the left went. I actually sat Donald Trump was doing the right thing or saying the right things specifically getting out of Syria getting out of Afghanistan pulling out some of the presence in Iraq. There was an earthy common sense to some of the things he said, even if his language was little bellicose language is a little crude. And I was willing to say, hey, look, he's doing the right thing. You're always talking about doing the right thing. But he has not governed in that way, we're still in all of those places and for every country he wants to pull out of let's say Syria. There's more Marshall threats towards other countries of Brown, folks. Whether it be Venezuela or a Ron so six one half dozen the other. I mean, I don't think there's a consistency to this man's foreign policy. I think there's a consistency demands policy much whatsoever. So far as I can tell. And that's one of the more dangerous things. And to me, I'm curious. I think what you ran afoul of. And I I've struggled. I've had a problem with that from time to time to I think which ran afoul of is a mistake that people who are a strongly democratic leanings can sometimes make which is anything that Trump does or says implies is inherently wrong. It gets to be a challenge. You know? We've we've talked we talk about global trade policy on this show. Well, the fact is Trump also said some things that made some sense about global trade policy. Now, he doesn't seem to be following through on them various e there either. But the fact is he he understood what the American people want. He kind of picked them on it. And the idea that people be. They personalized their hatred towards Trump. Sometimes I think they may. Then stumble into the trap of thinking. Well, what we need back is the same old consensus bipartisan consensus that got us into all these military adventures that built this costly and counterproductive empire around the world that did these bad trade deals that that strengthened corporate wealth and weakened sovereign nations in individual people's and labor movements and on and on vire mental movements and so on. And so I think we've got to get away from the enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of thinking and get it to really talking about the issues. I totally agree. I think the the last thing that we need in foreign policy, and I say this with twenty twenty the last thing we needed foreign policy is the old Clinton Bush Obama machine and a lot of people would take issue with me throwing those three together. But if you look at the way, they conducted foreign policy, especially after nine eleven there's more similarities than difference. Okay. I would argue that some of the differences are actually one of degree not one of overall policy. So you're the last thing we need is an establishment presidential candidate. Maybe I'm thinking of Joe Biden here who voted for the Iraq war who's been on the wrong side of history, and almost every major foreign policy to Bockel of the last eighteen years. So yeah, I think we need in both parties. But especially in the Democratic Party, some new blood at some new ideas and something totally new on foreign policy because hey, folks, what we've been doing it ain't working any evidence is there, and you know, what I think the people know, you know. You know, I think on a gut level the American people get that it's not working. It's not working for the global security of humanity. And it's not working for this country either. So I think that the politician that articulates that is going to win, and I couldn't agree with you more, Danny shirts. And because I think that if the Democrats put up somebody like somebody who reflects that consensus potentially Joe Biden or a younger version of Joe Biden with more hair, or whatever, you know, whatever they decide to do that that if they put up somebody who restates those old arguments, I think that was increase the possibility that Trump wins again because Trump is certainly willing to pivot again like he pivoted after he got elected and start talking against those those overextended and broken policy. So I completely agree with you there. And I guess I would add to that. Also that what what Democrats if for people who think of themselves as progress? My message is always. Or'social Justice policy here at home. Although those things are to me extremely important. It's also about not invading or destabilizing a nation. Like tennis. It's also about making sure we're not triggering new wars in the Middle East as we did in Syria, Libya, Iraq area, and then using the new wars and violence that result from our actions as an excuse to take further actions of some kind. Does that make sense to you totally makes sense? And I think we saw many establishment Democrats falling for the trap of just going against anything. Trump did or said when we saw people like Rachel Maddow who knows better over at MSNBC. She really does know defending, you know, keeping troops in Syria. Keeping troops almost indefinitely in Afghanistan. Somehow MSNBC started inviting these recycled Neo cons onto their shows to say look Trump's wrong, and there's this strange alliance between what people think of as the establishment left with the neoconservative Bush era. Right was really staggering. It's really scary. And and you know to kind of leave this issue behind I want to agree with you. It is a losing formula for twenty twenty just Trump will eat that up and walk all over such policies. Yeah. I absolutely agree. And I want to talk a little bit. Now, I want to change gears a little bit again, we're talking with Danny shirts. Formerly major Danny shirts and former US army strategist former history instructor at West Point. I wanted to talk to you about a couple of things that are closer to home. One is PTSD because you wrote about that. And then the other is your own journey. To becoming the thinker. And essentially at one point dissident army officer, I might describe. But I I want to talk about PTSD because you wrote a really brave piece about that. That I admire you for putting on paper, and by the way as someone who has suffered from PTSD and never written about it. I particularly appreciate your courage in putting it on paper. But. And I never suspected in our many conversations. But why would I? That this was something you struggle with. And I guess as well you right as a product of your deployments. So you comfortable talking about that a little bit. Of course. You know, I spent thirty days pretty much the entire month of February down in Arizona. Trigger facility for a variety of types of diagnoses. But PTSD was the main one I had been diagnosed with many of the military folks there I'd say about forty percent of the people in the program. We're military were suffering from some foreign PTSD in the answer. Larry sort of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and it was a really informative time not only because I got a lot of treatment that I couldn't get in an outpatient facility, but because I met an entire generation of the silent wounded of these wars on terror sort of the refuse of wars that didn't need to be fought. One of the things that I saw was that these kinds of silent wounds are harder for people to talk about then gunshots. You know, physical wounds are are horrible many of my soldiers have been maimed lost limbs. But there's there's a certain degree of honor that society places. The physically wounded, and what we have is hundreds of thousands more Americans suffering from PTSD and everything that follows and and I saw. The scope of with veterans from the army, the air force, the Marine Corps reserves. You know, veterans active duty retired and realized wow, this this is an epidemic and..
