"I despise more than any other in sport. Agreement. Packers are right there. Notre Dame football. I know they're on the station's probably third on the list. But the ST Louis Cardinals More than any other team in any sport. What did Notre Dame do to you? Do you remember? Stuff now to tell the story. What do they do to you? Nothing. But you just don't you can be like you dislike them because why has to be a story? Not the Cardinals. I think it's pretty clear, right? That's a long time rival for over the years, your Cubs fan, the Cardinals are beneath you. From your standpoint, right? And they were always above me are always better than us. Well, I mean, I mean, but they're beneath you. As far as your fandom. You're like, I don't like the Cardinals. They're just, You know, I don't like them at all. But Notre Dame. Where'd that come from? Growing up? It was just that fan base and not the basketball side. No, it's just that football team man. I like Coach Macleod. He had a big throw. He did have a big problem was doing his games. Then put it what it There was just either you loved Notre Dame football or you despise Notre Dame football. And that's just who I was. I just couldn't wrap myself around the Irish. More of a DePaul guy. Yes, Leaning more toward the palm? My dad, My late father went to the park. We had season tickets to DePaul games. But yeah, there was just something about Notre Dame football man. Well with the Cardinals, I completely understand this. I'm on the outside looking in, but I've watched this rivalry for a long time. And what Herzog was my guy. Just watching him the way they were able to get it done. From a baseball standpoint, everything worked. He would. It was a turnkey team. You turn the key, and everything worked right? Was like a new car driving off the lot every day. And, you know people out there like I can't believe you hate Notre Dame. Look When when you dislike a team that is the ultimate sign of respect. I'm not denigrating the quality of the program of the Cardinals or the Packers or the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. They just want my teams makes sense. Now you have an opportunity, especially with everything opened up. 100% will be able to see some Cardinals fans. If you see them. They're going to be in George and usually black socks and sandals, Correct or white Santa Bell slacks and a white belt correct so you'll be able to see them. They'll be part of the 100% that's going to be at Wrigley Field as well. You got a great time now to be able to beat up on them because they're really banged up and hurt. They are and you've got the mighty shalt. He'll be there telling you about your baseball. Your baseball should change. It will be there as well. So This is a great opportunity to of this weekend with great weather, 100% capacity and a banged up cardinals team for the Cubs to beat up on you know that I have been supportive of the day they hired Tony LaRussa. I like Tony LaRussa a lot and I know I'm in the minority there and that's fine. I'm OK with that. No, I am. Uh, Anyway, I nothing made me happier than when the Cubs would beat the Cardinals ass knowing that that guy Tony or Mike Matheny, who I was not a huge fan of Those guys had to make that long walk all the way, like amazed back up to the clubhouse and here, go Cubs go playing in the background at Tony when he was out with us said Yeah. I couldn't stand it and that made me happy right? And that's what I want today. Go out and beat their ass. You certainly have momentum coming from the San Diego series that surprised me the Cubs the way they played against San Diego now against the ST Louis Cardinals team again, the plan is to just wreck Jed Hoyer's plan. If you're the Cubs wreck his plan, keep winning. Continue to have momentum despite whatever's happened with the ball club keep winning because it makes it hard for Jed to unplug this team. Correct. You keep winning, they'll add on and then you have some. Hopefully, you'll have that momentum going into September. All right, Rick Hahn spoke about how the team will approach the trade deadline now that the White Sox have suffered another devastating injury. You'll hear from Rick and we'd love your thoughts. 3123323776. He's honey. I'm cap said his back, baby. Be right back. This is Kathy.

"Comparison. What we're going to see I'm Steve Bertrand coming up on the afternoon news today. Congressman Adam Kinzinger has a new view. It's actually an old view of the Republican Party. He will explain a little bit later. Oregon has decriminalized toe. All street drugs is Chicago. Next, We'll talk to all the been Brien Hopkins about that, and also a Siberian hip replacement do over. All those stories coming up. Mary is watching the weather just saw the latest national Weather Service situation report and it's gonna be an extended cold spell. Real cold. Yeah. Nice weekend to stay in. Make chili watch football. I'm okay with it. What do you got today? I just like to be outside the once in a while. Still jogging around the inside of your head? No today actually ventured out your super. Yeah, but I kind of walked JAG. Can I say something? I've been meaning to say this forever because everyone's out walking. That's crazy. This is my public service announcement, and I'm serious when you're in this my wife's thing. But when you're walking on the street, yes, walk against the traffic or if you're running run Against the traffic so you can see the cars coming at you as well as the car's seeing. You were coming at them because it's it's just dangerous to have your back to traffic. I lost a cousin to that. Yeah, and it's like, Oh, my. Yeah, So just keep that in mind. It's not that hard to do just walk against the traffic so that you can see the cars coming at you. And if you're going really early in the morning, and it's dark, put on some reflective something we're late in the afternoon. Actually, it's hard for the cars to see, especially, we're not looked used to looking like we used to. All right. There's that. How's traffic Been today? I get the big car, the truck fire the time I got a weird stuff going on today. I don't know. It's kind of slippery. I think in some areas if you venture off into the shoulder a little bit, you know you could hit a slick spot. So it seems like that might be what's happening. Maybe have a lot to report on today. It seems like it already. Kevin's got a big game in the afternoon today. Yeah, well, we keep it on. That market came for you, Steve. Don't work. I only bring it up because you know, John Liam's is a big bull dog guy. Here's a friendly wager or anything. No, he can't. He gets too worked up to work down that we keep. We can't even watch a game together. First time I watch the game with John was last year to DePaul game. It was a ton of fun. He invited me out. We had a great time, but he does get very animated. I went to a market to Paul Game and he was there too. I was texting him. He wouldn't come see me because he was too here. You already think it ain't nothing? Okay now that was back when market would beat the ball. Big news, though, is speaking of basketball is Candace Parker held her. You know, introductory press conference. That's obviously all done by zoom now, But that's that's huge news. I mean, two time MVP, of course, the Naperville native and joins the Chicago Sky team that figures to be in contention for a championship next season with the addition of Parker's, so that was cool to hear kind of Hear her reflect on coming home after 13 years in L, A, and some big news for the Blackhawks to forward Alex to breaking a defenseman Nicholas Bohdan cleared from the cove in 19. We initially thought they might automatically be out for three weeks. But Jeremy Carlson said they didn't test positive. So there's a shot. Both of those guys could be back tonight. Super Bowl still set for Sunday It is still set for Sunday. So far, just a couple little I should say, couple, little hick. There's no a little covert hiccups, but two players were placed on the covert list, but so far there everything scheduling and I'm gonna get some Super Bowl profits. I'm gonna work in good rest of the week. You know, so much is changing. It's good to know there's something we can count on Kim What's going on in the newsroom Leave. Remember the name Zack Doc. That's what you need to know to get your coronavirus vaccinations that the website I saw Press one site so hard to say, Doc. It's like dot com slash vaccine. It's like trying to say Game stop when you win the next word of stock. Exactly. But Doc Doc, that is a new company. Well, that's it's not a new company. But The city is teaming up with this online healthcare scheduling company to help people get a Corona virus vaccine, and it's supposed to be much easier than people that have been going on line for hours and hours and hours trying to get grabbing appointment somewhere, and I hope so. I was talking to a friend of mine who's an education is getting his vaccine tomorrow? But then his mother in law and father in law can't get an appointment anywhere. It's just been, you know, and they in John's John's done a great job of talking to people as they try to hack it and find ways in and It's just discouraging. It's very discouraging, and that's what I think in frustrating as well. And I think that was Dr are Woody's Focus today is that they shouldn't be folk. You know, this shouldn't be frustrating and take hours and hours and hours to get a new appointment, So hopefully this is going to make it easier once they get to supply figured out. Maybe. Anyway, I got you. This is a big day here on the afternoon news because Kim Gordon after 15 years Working in the WGN news room was saying for a while this afternoon. You said you weren't gonna make me cry. I'm already tearing. I'm gonna make you cry every half hour. So sad. We're gonna mess kit. I'm gonna miss you guys too. You are just a champion in someone who's just been well, you're a great friend, first and foremost, but Your work ethic is really something I've tried to hide from for all 15 years, And we're gonna miss you, Kim your big part of the show. I appreciate it. And as to quote my friend K p It's been an amazing run. I had a good run. I've had a really good run. And I mean, I brought your favorite pizza in because you said no matter what, you wanted pizza on the last day, I appreciate it. Okay. Tell the truth. No, I love pizza. I just don't like sausage and pepperoni and all that. I said So what? I like piece by the pizza. We did get Kim's world famous. What is the Kentucky Derby and manage? Mary made some chocolate cake too? So all around when it comes to the food department, a great day, but satellite, unfortunately. Had the desert right before the pizza. Yeah, we were like Wait. Okay. Now there's pizza. Thanks. All right. So we'll have Kim talk about some of her favorite stories in an effort to further her crying a little bit later in the program, Mary, What do you got? Well, he had a bunch of accidents on.

"First of all it is. What are we have three i. Hey listen. a- the house and played a game i know. So how do you fault them for that. Like i'm not rewarded. It hasn't been proven so not gonna bump yukon down to twenty five because all these other teams opportunity will or twenty or fifteen like. They haven't had a chance to play. So what am i gonna okay. That's a demerits. Okay well all. These teams have played four or five games and their winning. And you haven't played so we're dropping you down out of the top ten like i can't justify that other people could maybe do that like every single team like there has to be a rhyme or reason and you know if you're talking about maryland for instance like with the injury to angel. Reese like okay does that. Give them a demerit because she's injured now. So now i dropped them from twelve to twenty five because now she's out of the mix. I can't do that so it's the same kind of thing with south carolina losing okay. There's no way they can come back. It'd be number one right after that. There's no possible way right. So you can hasn't played so stanford was number two under south carolina so san goes number one because they were number two south carolina lawsuit. Bummer because they were already ranked number two. You can has a play. They were number three. So guess what number to see. That's the way i think about it now whether it be right or whether it be wrong. That's just had it so you know and it's hard because there is no rhyme or reason to it. I mean for other people may have other ways that they figure it out but louisville number three. So that's just how it came to be now. That's not a knock on jeff walls and how well they played. I washed depaul game. And let me tell you something. They were surgical in that game in every way. They got what they wanted. Every single time down on offense they were disruptive and owned the defensive end. And i mean for forty one point deficit for the pulled like that. I thought was closer game. It was like fifty point game in the third quarter so it was not as close as a forty one point mortar. No no and i think for me. I thought that was going to be one of the great early games of the season down to the wire and it was just like a mud stopping and and and no discredited depaul. But wow louisville right. I mean they just came in like machine and you have to credit when they were able to do and dana evans. My gosh man. Last year's acc player of the year preseason pick for a c player of the year right. He wants it all she wants. She wants player year period. No no conference qualifying a period right now. Yeah and i think she that. Do i think she is addiction. And yeah and who's to say. Louisville might not make the jump to number one in the coming weeks and its remaining to be seen with what obviously the two teams ahead of them are are going to do and once yukon starts the play What that looks like. So everything is interchangeable dislike. Twenty twenty. Every day is different. It's a whack-a-mole where things just gives happening but with with them i just think You know they're. They're a terrific team and haley been lifts. She is fantastic As a freshman who is picked up everything. Yeah she's ready to go and angel was similar when i mean obviously the injury now but to me it was like she's ready for this like she's neither of them. Were overwhelmed by being in college basketball. Right right And that's the thing it's like. You know this louisville team. I mean last year. They had three fantastic starters that they're missing this year and there's no fall off. This is a team that you know. Maybe has more depth than last year. You know and and can go deeper into their bench especially on the defensive end and how much energy they can apply on that side of the floor so i just think the jeff wall says and his staff they. They do a great job of repairing their players. And i i mean who's to say they won't be up there eventually but that was my thinking on the top three. No i understand. I got i can. I can be picky about these things house. Nc state behind south carolina. They beat them. you know. i think. I think arkansas should be a little higher. I always think. I'm going to say that in every single ranking the and so but i think they should be a little baylor and that's a huge one that was i know and it's hard i get it because i think it's hard you're were we're so used to being anchored by our preseason rankings. I think it does provide a good anchor to say okay. Well this is what. I was thinking about before. I don't like overreact. Too much right to me now. I mean if you've listened to this podcast overreact or so yeah louisville. Yes you spank some on national tv and everyone's watching that we're all talking about it like you get to number one for me. And how different is it. How different is it is if they get to play uconn instead. I don't know. I think it's going to be. I mean as the season unfolds and continues to to unfold. I think it's just going to be totally intriguing to say the least as these games. Continue to pop up on the schedule in And we get to be treated with great basketball. But i mean for me if you're at the top of the hill right and the tradition of your program is at the top of the hill that gives you more credibility as well right because you know the track record of the coach in charge. You know the track record of the expectations and and abilities of of what could be possible. So yes the upsets are are great narrow. Exciting do it again. So that's my thing. I'm like do it again. Okay all right. You did at that time. That's great but they don't go lose to to unranked teams after that because then you're showing me. You had a great wednesday. But then on saturday and monday of the after that you fell off the cliff like i don't and i know that that can happen to anyone but at the same time. No show me like you know. What have you done for me lately. Is is how i look at it like i get it on both sides of that. What have you done for me lately. Okay you know you wanna championship. You only lost one game last year if you're south carolina you coming into this season with high expectations. So i'm not going to like blow you out of the water. Because you had a hiccup right come back and show me how you respond to losing okay and if you if you're winning sustain it sustained and if you upset a top dog team do it again beat somebody else and and that's how i look at it like you can upset somebody all you want to but let me see you rip off five games like that and then i'm a believer then i'm like all right. They're they're here to stay. But don't just show a blip on the screen and then disappear. Don't do that because to me. You know if you're locked and loaded than you are locked and loaded every single game. Not just for the big games in ohio can get hyped because this is a super bowl game for us. I can get hype for. This is the big gain. This would be great for our program. Okay but the the teams who aren't ranked you come out and you play flat. 'cause you're not energized by where they're ranked because they're not even in the top twenty five. You're just gonna just go through the motions so that to me is not championship. Mentality that to me is like you're just here for the rob rob. If you're legit you're gonna come in and wanna crack foreheads. Every game regardless of who. You're playing shit. There should be no ebbs and.

"Welcome back to locked on women's basketball team alongside amy audubon we argue monday crew but just as a reminder there there's a whole lot else going on in this podcast feed we're actually one hundred episodes at just saw that. Were this episode. One hundred and one episode of hundred is powered mcdowell. Talking to vic schaefer. And charlie collier of the university of texas great interview highly adjusted and then on tuesdays and thursdays got eric. I'm talking about essential women basketball research resources on tuesday. Awesome stuff to get in if you're if you're kind of waiting until the women's basketball Sheltie to what you need to now and social justice thursdays where she's gonna be talking about the many many issues that women's basketball touches a in social justice. So just make sure you subscribe to the podcast feed or whatever podcast thing. You're you're using. I know he was like a million now for just what's worse locked women's basketball finest their follow on twitter at locked on. Wb but now. Let's get into a team that looked extremely good over the weekend. The louisville cardinals. They beat a number twenty two. Paul a hundred and sixteen to seventy five and amy was. It was not that close. That final score makes it look closer than was they were up. Fifty in the fourth quarter it was about is complete performance as possible. Would you think of the cards and does this kind of change your trajectory of their season. Yeah you know what i they now jumped up right. They were started off ranked number five leave and now they're number two in the country because of that game because i don't think you really look at they played southeast missouri eastern kentucky and ut martin So how do you jump up. Because really when you're five in the country you should be handling those teams like you said they completely dismantled of barry good off program like that's the thing doug bruno is in my mind. One of the best coaches in college basketball. I think he's fantastic. I think his players play so hard. They are a dynamic team that likes to play so fast and they can hit shots like incredibly quick. So i thought that louisville came in there and i. It was a close game for a little bit right before photos competitive. That's really fun But then depa Kinda stopped hitting a couple of shots and like it just seemed that took their foot. Press right on the gavin again. Look back. i am so impressed the I mean she. I knows that. Obviously she's one of the top recruits in all this stuff but it's one thing like you're a top high school player. You know one of the top players in the country but then when you step into one of the top teams in the country and you're expected to fit in all of a sudden in play a role. She's completely dominating. Dan evans has taken off with them with you. Know what i mean like. He's completely embraced her and right now. Haley's averaging sixteen in over seven rebounds a game in twenty seven minutes and evans is averaging twenty points over five assists a game in twenty five minutes shooting forty seven percent from the field and then you look at the cast right. Kiana smith over fifteen points in twenty minutes. Olivia cochran one of the best runners. Bang bang inside right now the country. She's averaging over fourteen points in nineteen minutes so you are looking at a team that yeah they're taking care of business in. They're smoking who they should be smoking. but men to me. That depaul game was now a special. And jeff walters scott to feel good now big big test this week. They go to cameron on wednesday and play at duke. And i think any time you're going into play carolina now like there's got to be a different level of respected humility into that game in so i'm really excited to see what this louisville team on wednesday night on haley van lith- that she was just she just ready. She's ready to be in the in college basketball. And that's something that not every freshman can do when you're coming in especially her. Because she has a target on my back she has like six hundred and seventy thousand instagram followers like people. I paid attention to her. They want they wanna get after. And she's been putting up these numbers but franklin defense for louisville unbelievable so that really cool stat that heaven hill of her hoops stats found. That's going be in historian on the hoop stats newsletter. Probably either tomorrow or wednesday But i saw status awesome three two they so the paul came into this game against louisville second in points per play. They left this game against louisville at thirty seventh em- points per play. I know it's small sample size. But yo- like that's a domestic deepens. The eleven blocks eight steals. It was suffocating. Most impressed bar. I'm looking at early in season. I what i'm looking for is proof of concepts. Okay when i when this team needs to is going to win the national championship at when we're looking at these championships. What do i need to see what i see. From louisville. i saw against the paul. Great offense really strong defense. They were in shape. There were ready to go and they just kept going attributing care if they were up by forty they kept going at you and that to me is proof of concept at for this team to be a championship team. Yeah i totally depose. One of the highest. I think ravaging while over one hundred game. I think in the country in scoring at that time. Yeah and i think they have. What forty or fifty half like neither do i do. I think that the paul's also a team. That's going to run a gun and just have ridiculous amount of offense possessions again because of the pace they wanna play. And don't forget like the paul full court pressure right like being taught there up in your face and so when you look at what hayley lewis was able to do against pressure break down right away you know. Make a great pass in. We talked about the rim. The rim runner in Yeah they're in shape and like you mentioned in the previous segment. Conditioning is is going to be huge issue. This season in in right now. Lavelle looks looks really good and i don't want to take the conversation away from little. But it kind of reminds me right now stanford because number one team in the country. I understand they're on the west coast. Not we really haven't loud about them yet but just this kind of goes back to the conditioning games. They've only played three games..

"Let's pick up the conversation there as a gym you started your career before the bears you'll want to Paul when the Paul was basketball in this city yeah I started in nineteen seventy seven in the three years of alumni hall the forty two games I did they did lose one and then combining that with the force for years at the rise in the polls record was one oh seven and three the games and it was just you'll never be duplicated by any team in college basketball again and those games where is exciting I grew up in the DePaul neighborhood in the fifties and my two uncles went to the Paula cata me they close the high school in the sixties and my family was very friendly with the Vincentian priests in that order runs to Paul and a genesis of might be a career began with a friendship with my family in the Vincentian priests and I gotta tell you the excitement of that first year in the horizon the Notre Dame DePaul game on the last Sunday the regular season to the politics of managers said I should request for almost fifty thousand tickets I believe it in a you know a jammed eighteen thousand people in it was then Berg McGuire Billy Packer I mean it was just the tension and excitement but what I remember most the eighty seven NCAA tournament first round games were on a Friday at he's in the first game was temple was like rank two three judge playing Southern University was the greatest collegiate band always an eleven o'clock on a Friday morning there was eighteen thousand people in the rice sold it's awesome yes the impact what the Polydor to create the interest in a couple years earlier Jean Sullivan what the L. Frederick cues yeah payment Carl goals than I got to the Sweet Sixteen in lost to George and then Michael you know it's just starting to come here that eighty six play up your only score what sixty three there's nothing like that against Boston well like you said that window from seventy seven controllable start to win the ball was the biggest toughest ticket in town people came through blizzards I love their January night to watch them play they know centenary no disrespect but yeah what I'm saying it was it was everything answer Kaufman who didn't love rain my my good right the bulls are averaging if if memory serves and I know it does they were averaging six thousand a game at at the stadium the staying we're drawing eleven thousand in the hearts of course or sell it out and the Polish the Polish a cargo basketball period end of story the end and those teams were just awesome I I can remember yeah I would I grew up might we we were in highland park's or close to northwestern in my my family didn't want to drive out to the rise in and they were more professional basketball fans Jim but I remember going to an I. T. game at alumni hall with northwestern into Paul I don't know if you got to call that game or maybe that was northwestern's PA guy but I'm sure you remember that game will is nineteen eighty three yeah and and the demons want I believe by two five am I am I right about that to northwestern when they get any tears and yeah then bounce pass in shadow over his head almost there center court at one in sixteen fifty eight sixteen fifty eight I just that was a that was a cool the only game I've ever worked in sports where the crowd was truly fifty fifty it will act the ball at northwest well now it is a that was one of the most exciting games I did because it the the rivalry that really didn't exist but the fact of the geography made a special game and it meant something was a tournament they're using the beach ball colored ball the red white and blue ball yeah and imagine a first round and IT game you draw eighteen thousand people and it was really was fun that that Reno was just absolutely phenomenal this all along my hall was the greatest no question about yeah the.

"Is playing in the outfield. You get hit. And you get picked off you're out. You're you're done. You're not getting they hit it all arm terrible. And if you're gonna go ahead, and maybe produced the plate it can't give up runs in the field right now. This guy's negative flight. Yeah. It was it was bad negative wall. Just play Schwab. I mean seriously. I don't know what they're doing. If I'm Schwab. Ray I'm thinking man when do I reach free agency? And when do I get out he's the one guy that wants to get two free? Just to get the hell hottest Chicago about the that was our buddy Adam Amine on the call last night on the radio side of things we also had national ESPN TV doing the game. It was John Chambi and David Rawson. Tim Kirkman is gonna join us in a few minutes. Adamant means so good. He was in for you a couple of days, Larry hair, good stuff. Former intern always just a barrage star, very good. So what he is. He's got solid pipes Karm. He does he smoke about two packs of cigarettes a day. You know what I should've asked him. I don't think he smokes at all. Pipes hoping he'll be added to I don't know where the women's final forest, but he's I think he does the women's final four as well. Notre Dame women's game was in Chicago last night at the polls new stadium. Wasn't it? You notice how they never pan up too high because they don't wanna show the MDC. They don't wanna show the empty seats. Yeah. Paul game. Even during a depaul game kit. Villanova. Key you go in there. There's no player introductions. They just go into stands and shake hands and introduce themselves to Paul ended up losing in the CBI. Right. That's what it's called last night. They'll be I think it's a series though. Isn't it continue that it's best two of three guys are still playing? So they're down a one. Okay. Very good. I did not even realize that about that they play series Jerko. What what's the CBI? It's like the college basketball invitational. I I'm assuming that's what it stands for. What what are you? What are we doing here? You know, remember when they cut the consolation game out Karm member they used the plan kind Seventy-nine played third and fourth place game. I believe against UCLA. They did they did they cut ten against. They realized nobody cares about the consolation game. Nobody like in the World Cup. They should stop it to right. Great cares about the third fourth place game. And especially the teams that are playing our buddy Tim Kirch in was down. Atlanta part of the broadcast last night on ESPN TV. Thank you saw the cubs a little bit in Texas too. He joins us right now. To talk baseball. He's with carbon in York on ESPN one thousand and ESPN Chicago dot com, and that's the tape burner last night. If you're the cubs is it's. Yeah. That wasn't very good. So there's a fifteen in the last fifty years and the first team since the eighty five Philly to make six in a game in which they were shut out. So that's not a good group to be in. When you count that mistake that was made with leftfielder shortstop on a ball that should have been caught there more that six errors made in that game, basically and then to have a game and like that. With somebody forgetting how many outs there there were was kind of an appropriate end to a very difficult night for the cubs. They made you guys go to cut into the Mets game last night. They were they talking into you're going. Okay. We gotta get out of this one boys. Talk about something else. Yeah. Yeah. We went to the Mets Marlin and the Blue Jays Oreo on about it. Not recommended when you're doing a game. But we did what we were told. So I mean, look this this season is way too long Tim to to fret over every single loss, especially losses in April. I mean, it's the fourth game of the year. It's just too long of a season to go nuts. But as you can imagine Cup ins are wondering about the one in three start. Now, what are your early impressions of this team? Well, it's terrible start. But you're right. Panic after four games. Would you got one hundred fifty eight to go? I think this team like that matters to win the division. I still think they're gonna win the division make the playoffs. Somehow. I still think it's a very good team. However, they walked twelve guys on Saturday Sunday, they blew a four run lead. And then a three run lead and lost the game on I'll walk off wild pitch. And then last night we've been over that. So that's three really ugly losses in a row. And again, it's a veteran team they will pull this together. They will be very good before this is over. But as far as bad starts, go. This is the bad one will Schwaiger ever be good enough to face left a consistent basis. I think so I think I know he's changed his stance this spring I saw it is markedly different than last year. And it's just another attempt for him to be become a great hitter. He's a good hitter. And he needs to hit lefties and he needs to play all the time. In my mind because that's what you have to be. Is it everyday player? You gotta hit both sides and giving him a chance to do it. So hasn't worked out, particularly well, so far, but I still I still think given how skilled and talented at strong. He is he's gonna figure this out. You guys talked a lot about the kunia junior on the broadcast last night. I mean, he had a home run rookie of the year. All the other fun stuff that surrounds him such a high player. And now he signs another big deal. What's happening here? Tim. I mean is weird stuff happening base free a free agency going away on? It's a little bit surprising to see so many young guys taking these deals right now. Isn't it? Yes, it is. But we should get used to it because isn't going away, but free agency has changed dramatically. And I don't think it's coming back anytime soon, and it is clear now you're thirty three years old with climbing skills. You are not going to get paid anymore. But if you're twenty four years old or twenty two years old, and you can really play teams are going to try to lock you up. Keep you away from arbitration keep you away from early free agency and pay you you are young and upcoming as opposed to maybe on the flight downside of your career. And one of the great beauties of baseball's always been me, separating it from other sports. You got to prove yourself in this game before you get paid at now that philosophies out the window because look how many young guys are being paid before they've proved themselves hardly at all. Again. These are really young GM's emotionless remorseless, you'll have a dip away doing things, and we better all get used to it. Will any big names? Get two free agency will bats will Linda and a couple of years or is that like you said just the the new reality. Is it kind of a it sort of made Harper Machado even more unique this last year, and why more teams probably should have tried to capitalize in the free agency market. I think if you're out the right age you're done you're gonna succeed in free agency. And you're gonna do exceptionally well as Machado did. And as Harper did. But it's possible. The Red Sox just say, we're not letting Buki debts get out there were assigned him and keep him in that would be my guess as to what's going to happen Potiskum Lindores. I think is in a difference by the Indians are a small market team. They're trying to save money. And he's going to get started at three hundred million and go from there. And I don't think they're going to be able to afford him three years from now. So it all depends who you are what your track record is what your age is what your panel level is. And that will determine. It. But if you don't have all of those elements going in the right direction the same direction. I just don't think you're gonna get paid like you used to create. You know, we've seen this before with Boston. They win a World Series. Then they disappear and fall off the face of the earth the next year. Boston gonna repeat what they've done in the past. Or are they going to recover here and still be a competitor in east? They're going to recover. They're going to be really good before. This is over. Chris sale is gonna pitch way better than he did on opening day. Starting pitchers ERA is well over seven, and that's not gonna continue. Their offense is relentless. Their defense is good. This is a slow start. And I'm not worried at all about the Red Sox. But they do they will have to get a closer at some point. If they're going to be anything close to the team that they were last year maybe that closures on their team right now, baby. It's it's you know, Ryan brazier right now. I don't know. But this is what Red Sox will try to find the rest of the way. Baseball's a funny game, Tim. I mean, you look at Seattle your co brought up the Red Sox core. Seattle took I think it was three out of four there. Six one. Now, they trade do I have everybody DS. Colony Paxton Keno trade all of the off season, and they're six and one baseball's crazy. Right. There were the Orioles beat the Enke's two out of three at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles are three and one Tampa Bay. You know, took the Astros apart Tampa Bay's pretty darn good. Yeah. The dodgers hit a home run like every at bat now it credible. This is why baseball is. So great is that you obviously never know what's going to happen from day to day. And I I slept myself in the forehead about fifty times already this year. We haven't even played a week yet. Crazy. It's been and that's why it's the best game is just don't know. What's going to happen today? You guys had a good conversation last night about a play second. Maybe third inning. I can't remember when it was early in the game. But that play where the ball drop between. So and Baya's, and you guys were all making the point that somehow that needs to be an error. And that's a tricky thing. Because what is the official score supposed to do historically? You know, I it's it's very hard almost for outfielders certainly to get airs charged to them. You know, a a play that we look at that supposed to be made. But isn't never really goes down as an air, but how should baseball look at that? Because it doesn't seem very equitable or fair to the pitcher when a ball falls between two guys were five feet apart. Yeah. Well, I've been in official score before and it is really hard to do. So I think they need to help the official scores even more. And I think there should be some designation of eighteen error or something else. Now, they call that properly last night. That's a hit according to the official scorers rulebook right to call that. However, there's no way Kyle Hendricks should be penalized for getting a pop up that should have been easily caused by somebody and it wasn't caught. It's gotta go ahead. But I would redo the official scoring rules and say on a play like that we either determined eighteen error or you given error to one of those two guys whether shortstop shouldn't have called it or the leftfielder backed off. But that plays got to be made. And that should be reflected. I believe in the official score. I think it's a good point before we let you go. Tim another minute with Tim coaching on ESPN one thousand anything new on Dallas kaikal and Craig kimbrel. Well, I checked with the Braves yesterday. And I mean, there's they'll they'll be in on kimbrel. But only if it's a one or a two year deal at right now that just isn't happening as far as kaikal goes. I know they're offers on the table. But until he lowers his demand. And I'm not even sure what that demand is. Now, I don't think he's going to get a job either. And I really liked both those guys those guys should be in the big leagues right now. But again, they're going to have to recognize that free agent situation has changed and they don't sit in like they thought they were gonna go and they're going to have to make a decision. What do we do now? All right, Tim. We appreciate the knowledge is always, thanks. Okay. Guys. See we'll talk to Tim Kirch and joining us..

"On seven twenty WGN. Dennis Rodman is here. And he's enjoying all the love songs were playing today. Speaking of love songs true love Al Capone who lived with his wife is sister and his mom right right on the south side. And I believe a younger brother as well. Seventy-second? I read it. I started to read a biography of him. And I got I think I read a lot about this house. I didn't finish it. But he he dies in the end. I'm pretty sure I think he did. Yeah. Seventy-second and prairie. Tell me about this house. And it sounds like you buy for steel hundred nine nine I didn't mean that. Don't sorry. That's not gang up on Dennis. Eight hundred nine nine it was recently foreclosed it's actually being sold by foreclosing lender. Not through the Capone components family has owned it since the nineteen seventies. But they owned it. From the nineteen twenties to the nineteen seventies at nine hundred twenty three to nineteen seventy-two the names on the deed. The signatures on the deed are Capone's, wife and mother, and what was fascinating to me. Which is in the story is Capone was sort of a kind of a celebrity, but within a dark way. And so there are all these articles in the Tribune where reporters are visiting his house at when he's in jail. They're talking to his mom and his sister and his sister has the flu and they go sit in her the reporters, go sit in her bedroom and describe her nightgown in her curtains, and that sort of thing as you would if you were interviewing some movie star hotel, suite. So the family owned it from the twenties through the seventies. He didn't live there from the time. He. He went to jail. He appears not to have lived in Chicago, again, moved to my already had a home in Miami. But moved fulltime there his mother was there until she died. And so I love to the story is that there's a tunnel from the basement to the garage, right? If every tunnel story about Al Capone was through right. I mean, that's all you hear about tunnel stores. Alpine. Okay. So from that home one hundred nine thousand which may or may not go, let's go to the warring condos, and this now this guy behind vivid seats, Eric vessel Lotto's Eric festival does this. But how many condos five condos in six six those at the water tower on three different floors. They're they're contiguous. But it's too condos on the top floor one on the next and three on the bottom. So you got to figure out how think about that? Next time, you're buying white socks tickets through vivid seats. Yeah. Because the total investment is is a minimum of fifteen million. He's spent about seven and a half buying the condo. Ios, and he took out a per that's over the course of a few years. He bought them. It didn't buy them all at once. And then last week took out a permit a construction permit that says that combining them into one will will bring it up to about fifteen million. And that's generally the minimum because when you file a construction permit. You're not you're not saying how much you're gonna pay on wallpaper cabinets or that sort of thing. It's really for the the heavy construction. The code the things that are. Cabinets are included in the cherry cabinets. Swear. We'll never let that go. Okay. So I went to the Marquette depaul game this week, and I was buying tickets, and I ended up on vivid seats, and I don't buy resale very often or I just don't. And but I'm looking like there's floor seats. Here did not on the floor. But the first row back and there's like eighty six bucks eighty six dollars. I'm right across from the Marquette bench. This could be kind of fun. I'm gonna go with the buddy. I'll swing for that hundred and sixty five dollars right hundred seventy dollars for two seats with a lot of money, but I'll do it. And then I checked out and my Bill is like two hundred and twenty dollars awhile. You know, these fees, and I just did not check the closely enough. But now, we know why he can afford a fifteen million dollar Eric's Eric's name was on my ticket was actually on the who's on the ticket. So I bought one of the polls for his new. That's probably true for his cherry cabinet is another thing you wrote about in a minute. We have left was this supreme court ruling that impacts condo association in their ability to sue. And you're right that it's very significant. Explain for me why it's a big deal. It is for about thirty five years. Lawyers for condo associations could pursue damages could pursue the funding on construction defects by going after subcontractors, we don't have time to explain exactly why. But subcontractors don't have a signed contract with the homeowner. But the developer does a developer generally uses a limited liability company goes out of business. So the question for about thirty five years the doctrine was that. There was an implied warranty with the subcontract. You could go after this. Subcontract to work was bad for the. Yeah. For some of these high rises, you're talking to three million dollars. If the facade is failing if the parking garages leaking that sort of thing and in December. There was an Illinois supreme court decision that took away that doctrine that there is an implied warranty that passes from the homeowner through the developer through the contractor to the subcontractor that's gone, which is a big deal. Maybe legislation could fix that. Some of the the attorneys. I spoke to said that there may actually be a move to try and reverse that reversal.

"Wrestling Tuesday at the top of the hour. WWE hall of Famer good old JR Jim Ross, my colleague, my friend will be on the program came up at the top of the hour. We'll talk about look college football with him. Get his thoughts about Cuyler Murray. Also, of course, we're gonna talk with WWE his thoughts about wrestling for twenty nineteen and so much more. Steve MacLean get outta my practice on. He St. McClain. Head coach for the flames will be with this coming up at nine thirty five flames getting ready to take on the mercy titans. That's gonna take place seven o'clock on Thursday. Tickets available for that event at UIC dot com. We'll talk to you McLennan coming up at nine thirty five here on ESPN and the a short tonight because of Notre Dame basketball. It's funny. They were coming out of college basketball. I wanna point this out to you. There were times in my career that I would talk to you about the lack of support when it comes to college basketball in the city, and I would say, you know, I grew up in the and it has a gen xer. I remember this like it was yesterday. When so many would go to you. I see games and go to depaul games, and and go to north western games and just to be able to just support what's going on college basketball. I remember. I remember watching a the Paul game this year that was called by Stephen bardo bardo on the program f s one friend of the program. We haven't talked to him in a while. And he told a national audience pretty much that well, you know, Chicago, it's really more of a high school basketball city, then college basketball city, and I started thinking about that. Right. I'm thinking. There was a time for sure when I was a kid watching king watching Simion watching some of the terrific basketball in high school in the past. I was into it. Especially earlier in my career doing high school holler and doing high school game night in my career. So yeah, it was definitely on it, and it yes it was hot. And it's still some great storylines in high school basketball here in the city, but I really started delve into thinking what bardo sit on that broadcast porter. Moser the head coach Loyola's done. Terrific job are twelve and seven coming in tonight's games. Coming off the final four that was that was the big story because how can this school able to get to that level? Moser did the work the grassroots effort to put any program, but yet to try to, cultivate, kids to come to games, you can pull you understand Moser going door to door knocking on dorms knocking on classroom. Doors trying to get kids to come in to that brand new relatively new Jim to support the law ramp. Blurs and it is a hot ticket. This team has twelve and seven towns and Kurt wig and Williamson terrific Loyola team. You know? And again, you look at that team last year they were on an incredible run. Now can they have sustained success? That's a big question. Mark at northwestern with Chris Collins taking over for Bill Carmody in administration. So Chris Collins fourteen in one thousand nine hundred fifteen and seventeen twenty and twelve twenty four and twelve a nice twenty run in the sixteenth seventeenth season and fifteen and seventeen last year. First time in the tournament a time you get there for the first time, it's pretty cool. Illinois because that was a school I focused on. I was a kid after Lou Henson going. I mean, he had a terrific. Run with Illinois seventeen appearances in the NCAA tournament. So after Lou Henson, it's a seamless transition into line. Krueger Bill self and Bruce Weber, and I think that they were very solid getting the team into the tournament team was on the map. And then here comes the John grow Sierra where he goes thirty seven fifty three in the conference. And now the pressure's on Underwood to probably able to turn this around. Now, I'm not gonna say that he needs to be out. I'm saying years is that it's gonna take some time from the Bill this thing and again, cultivate, something special at the Paul Albert Pernille. What a disaster. Algebra Cornell five years. Dave Lehto comes back to the Paul personnel is a guy that he finds a way not to get fired. You always takes a gig. And then doesn't get fired Lehto comes in nine at twenty two nine at twenty three eleven and twenty. And again, this is an impossible big east. I don't think the Paul should be in the big east, but it's almost impossible to win there in that big east. It's not impossible to win. It depaul Paul though, that's my point with you. I see Jimmy Collins the accomplish three I AA tournament appearances it fell off six straight years after that. Howard more comes in my buddy, forty nine and won eleven through five years could not get it done. Steve MacLean went from five wins to twenty wins and three years until the arrows pointing out. But again, you look at the news in the Chicago states and look at issue where Muller could do a better job. I think he's solid but could do a better job at Eleanor state. Look at Bradley how they were pretty good. In the gym last administration. But haven't really seen enough success at Bradley since oh five or six I want you to put this on the poll Felix at ESPN one thousand what's more of an attraction in state of high school, basketball or college basketball, put that up and see how that goes. But I guess my whole point of bringing this up is out of the Notre Dame game. Is that I used to blame the fans and say how how come you're not come into the game. You're not supporting if you're on campus. Yes, you should support your team because it's about school spirit. However, it's up to the coaches, it's up to the school to be able to create a culture in which, hey, this is the place to be support your school because there's so many other structures out there. It's up to the administrators. It's up to a director directors to make it a place where it's like, hey, you know, what you should come to these games. I don't know if you wanna go as far as Grand Canyon with what's going on there with that school where. Well, I think it's kinda cool. But it's interesting at Greg kid you where you get class credit for going to the games. That's why it's sold out all the time for Dan Marley. It's interesting. All right. So I want to get your thoughts on on that on the poll question at ESPN one thousand the other thing is is I want you to be able to have somebody Chicago land fishing and travel expo tickets. So I want you to tell me your thoughts about this topic regarding college basketball, what's.

"Early. Life nine thousand is not a vodka hang in there. They haven't turned the clock back. But it's the what is today the twenty twenty-first he got nine days and so many hours before dry, February begins. Good luck, y'all. You mean, wet wet February February and dry enough? As it is the news, click radio wgnradiOcom today says should the NFL change overtime rules. We as they say don't have a dog in this hunt. What what the bears missing that kicking? All. But should the NFL changes overtime rules? Yes. Both teams should get the ball or be. Nope. If you play better defense, it won't matter. This works. The correct answer is a both teams should get the ball. Let's go to the sports department. Here's Kevin Powell. I agree. I think it would be mostly just because it would be more fun to watch to see both teams get an opportunity whether you do this just in the playoffs or all the time. I do think everybody should have a chance to get the ball in the conference championship games were. So. You know, there's two things that we were reminded of this weekend. It's a game played by human beings. And by that, I mean officiated by human beings and sometimes even with a thousand cameras and replay they'll get stuff wrong. They'll miss stuff also the rules conspire against getting it. Right. Because if there's no flag than you can't challenge a play that didn't happen. If say there's pass interference. But they don't call it. You've got nothing to challenge. So you got that going against you? And it's not just a game. Right. Like, you say, all right, whatever. But when you consider that this is a multibillion dollar industry, if I was one of the team owners, if I was one of the industry heads, it would really tick me off that things can be this wrong about my business. Imagine if you're an accounting firm or a welding supply company, I don't know if somehow or another you did everything right? And yet you failed because the rules worked against you. I think you would want those rules amended. No question about it. We also watch. Every kick go right through the middle of a field goal Paul's rainfall. Yes was right. Looks down the pipe so easy. Oh, that's an idea in the middle. I really trying to move on from this. But I, you know, it's you're watching these games. And you're thinking to yourself the bears could be here in the bears could play with any of these teams. They've shown they can they beat the Rams is here. They embarrassed the Rams at all. But I don't want to dwell on the parkey fake when it comes to the. Let's just well on it for one. Because I was wondering what it was like for the fans of those four teams when their guys are lining up for kickoff field goal. I thought are they going like this because I am and I'm not even on the field team now. But that's the way it was for us. And of course, it proved to be fatal, but for them. It's just like, well, you just get a guy out there. He just lines up. And he he does that thing with his hand, and he closes one canno- Canoas hit. There's one posters the other push right left. Right. Okay. And then he just does it. You wanna do? Here's kick the ball between the posts do not hit the post that is not the objective. Here. Didn't even come close. So it was wild. I understand everybody's talking about a lot of the penalty the call everyone's talking about of course, is that late. No pass interference call on the saints Rams game. That's what everybody's talking about. But a couple of things here watching the saints play calling on that sequence there. They throw the ball on first down with under two minutes to play. And it's an incomplete pass. The Rams only had a burn one time out. They get the ball back with timeout with with plenty of time. The saints could've just random all three times kick the field goal and won the game. Yeah. I don't know what you're doing passing the ball. So I didn't I didn't really feel bad for the saints as everybody else does today after that horrible call the call that I think was the most atrocious. Then I think it was actually worse than that. None PI call was late in that game in the AFC game. Chiefs get called for a roughing the passer call and Tom Brady, and it is a defender hitting Tom Brady and the shoulder with his hand. And that is it and that was that was on third down. And that was a call made by an official who was behind. I mean I've ever seen in my entire life. He had no Anglo. It was impossible for the official. Even if he got it right to get it. Right. Because he couldn't see he was behind that. Don't don't make the call. If you don't have Vance, Johnny. So so you're right. And by the way, New England happened to win that game. Right. I don't know if you know that the papers. The patriots. I know a lot of people hate them because they continue to win nine Super Bowl. They're going to the last eighteen years in the last eight years. Nine and the last eight it's very difficult only they could pull. I disrespect what they absolutely. You know what I mean, it's sustained success? Think about the bare season John think about how many things went their way figure how special of a season it was for the bears, and they still got bounced in the first round, no pun intended. They still get bounce in the first round. And the ten the first in the first round the patriots somehow continued to find a way. Well, let's because she cheat. That's right. Yeah. I just respect all of us are losing. Oh, no. It's it's it's the bulls when they had Michael Jordan. When they had Babe Ruth. I mean, somebody said that this weekend is well, we know you don't like it. But you'll fifty years from now be able to say I live in the greatest I'll call it the greatest sports dynasty ever. I'll go that far. This. Texter says, the NFL should use college overtime rules. Both teams get the ball at the forty or something. Yeah. Some people don't like that. Because it takes some of the special teams out of the game. Really, no punting or anything like that way. They organize over time. Now, it's better than it used to be where basically you just had to get Phil a kick a field goal. And you win the touchdown. You know, you don't win unless you scored change it though. Would you think there should be some changes should both teams get a touch? I think so thank so I'm with you. We can't be friends if you don't agree with you on that one because it's just so fundamental. It's it's a fun game. And it's fun. It would be more fun. I think that one of the reasons you don't for instance, in baseball, you can play a thousand innings, and that's part of the drama tennis. You'll play a thousand extra games to get through that set. So that there have been some epic matches that have gone on for days in football. You've got guys the way three hundred pounds running twenty miles an hour crashing into each other over and over again, and you can't ask them to do that forever. Right. So that's bad injury or part of it. But this is not the solution. This is this is not the solution. Yeah. I you know from what I'm taking away from yesterday. Once say, the overtime changes are top of mind for me. But I I hear you look Tom Brady takes the ball down. What a thirteen play seventy five yard drive. You got to respect that. You know what I mean? It's not like it was some fluke play wasn't some huge pass interference call. It gave them a huge chunky yards that put them in field goal range Brady systematically picked apart the chiefs on that final drive when they went to overtime. I said Tom Brady is not Frank came into my office today, and he still cannot into conspiracy guy, which is what conspiracy people say unload, their conspiracies NFL didn't want Kansas City in this thing. Kansas cancer who? You. Boston on L can't sit. He's a very special story this year. But you got people to watch the Super Bowl. They don't know anything about the NFL. But they wanna watch a good game. You get more people to the party. If it's the Tom Brady show, if it's a if it's northeast if it's a New England team, if it's one of them anybody in fly over land is not matter. I don't buy into the. That's okay. You got problems later this afternoon. We'll go back to Brian is loaded up on that one. And this. Texter says, the networks got what they wanted east coast versus west coast. John the fix is on. Conspiracies are coming in John February January has thirty one days. Thank you for those of you with your wet. February countdown clocks, you gotta wait an extra day. Well, I thought I was doing it. Right. If today's the twenty-first that's ten, but it's nine full days, plus ours, isn't it? I don't know. But at great championship Sunday, though, it was John on my menu since he asked I had wings, I had meatballs and I had sausage yesterday. Very nice. And Saturday was a good day to for the sports fans because there's a lot of college basketball. Hey, I've watched Zion. Williamson play I watched Doke. I watched the Butler game. I watched all of the depaul game watch Paul game twice. And then I watched the Marquette game for my friend. Steve Bertrand, the design. There's a place for that. Duquesne was highly entertaining Saturday the bulls need to just lose out the rest of the top overall pick Kazan Williamson is a game changer. It looks like Khalil Mack in a in a in a basketball uniform on the court. I mean, the guy is just a monster that big throw down a his over the weekend was with his opposite hand, right? Yeah. He's a lefty it down with the right? Yeah. I mean, that's a dunk you go. Wow. That took a lot of finesse and strength. He did it with his opposite hand in the middle of a game to do this on the side open court on a Saturday morning and the guy dunk on nine feet tall. It was a nine footer. The rare nine footer our news click, by the way, pretty swell of why don't you look up? I we need to. We'll take our break here. You may want to be part of the conversation. I hope you do three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred three one to ninety one seventy two hundred should they change the NFL rule that says in overtime if you score a touchdown on the first possession than the other team doesn't get the ball. You may want to comment on the officiating. And how about that Tony Romo? Phil rosenthal. Online today story has a great headline. And if it doesn't pop into my hand right now, I'm going to paraphrase it, but he said something like Tony Romo probably inherited Super Bowl bound CBS analyst Tony Romo probably predicted. This column would happen. You like Romo? Everything is annoying. I didn't know anything special about it. I watched the game. And he was predicting the place that would happen as they would happen seconds before they happen. Jim if you're the patriots right now, you gotta split out, rob gronkowski and. Yep. That's what they're doing as you can see here. Rob gronkowski's on the top of your screen. And if your Tom Brady, you got to go to here throws it right to for huge pickup. You don't think? That's so special. I figured special. I think romo's incredible. Some people don't like him because it's I dunno. I think romo's great though. Right. That he he didn't do a double reverse flea flicker. It was a bet they're going to go to gronk like all of America didn't know that. Maybe they're going to throw the ground. That's a good point. But also look for element across the middle here. Across the middle. I know that I know that so Tony Romo if nobody had a good day in the NFL yesterday. You know, if nobody got it right Romo consistently did three two nine eight one seventy two hundred if you wanna say, hi, this is WGN..

"The forecast from the WGN Chicago weather center. Mostly cloudy today. Windy, maybe a flurry or sprinkler around. Later today. The temperature's going to drop after reaching a high in the middle forties. We'll be down to the thirties by evening, mostly cloudy tonight few flurries, possible, low twenty and then tomorrow, partly to mostly sunny and a high of only twenty four it's forty four right now at O'Hare forty seven midway forty-three had Warrenville and forty four at Chicago's lakefront. I'm Steve Bertrand in the WGN radio newsroom, and these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Thank you, Steve Bertrand. Did you notice the front page of both of the papers today the Tribune and the sentence had headlines and photos that were still about bear? Like, yeah. Deflection. Doing sin reflection. And the sun times had a pun on their front page. Today's Tuesday, by the way, January eighth. I think we'll be talking about a Wednesday tomorrow. We'll have a sports psychologist on to talk about the teachable moment that the missed field goal by Cody parkey was are you serious one hundred percent because you know, I'm just watching people and watching all the fan reactions and. You know, I'm not a sports fan. I used to be guess, but I just don't have that people were in agony. And it's hard for you to understand if someone I mean, I'm bummed who Marquette fan bummed when they lose in the first round of the tournament every year, but not an agony. You know? I am when my team loses. I think what I learned yesterday is what a bears fan. I am. And I'm not Kevin Kevin who does sports you hear him with rose show mostly here on WGN radio. You know, I was teasing him. And I felt bad about it. Because he was really despondent yesterday. He was angry. And he was heard. That's as honest emotion. That's where he was he wasn't playing although he was a little bit. But he he felt really bad didn't feel really bad. But when Butler loses a close game, I'm inconsolable for a day. Really? Yes. I that that day like Brenda and I were talking about it because they won their game. And they played at eleven. She said, well, it's nice because then you have the rest of the day to enjoy. I said, yeah. But if they lose I don't enjoy the rest of the day better. They play late in the day. Because then my mood doesn't swing. So the cubs. Get knocked out. Play in game or whatever it was. And so you down for no. As much as seemed like it's not my team. I don't feel as your team. You know what I did last night? I taped and watched again the depaul game. The last game to Paul played. I so enjoy that. I thought I'm going to watch that again watched it because I knew how it was going to turn out. And so is so much more enjoyable when you watch a game whose outcome. You know? That's really weird. Thank you. Now. Remember yesterday, we spent considerable time here talking about this bird box phenomenon and net numbers and the authenticity of the whole campaign in the numbers that they were offering. Jason Nathanson, the news entertainment correspondent said today that Nielsen is backing up net flicks. Saying a massive amount of people watch the Sandra Bullock movie bird box in week one which is just so timely. Jason welcome back to WGN because we we call Bs on that. And did a whole same yesterday. I didn't think forty five million people could have watched bird box by December twenty eight. You know what I mean? That's what they're saying. And isn't that original tweet? They said that forty five million people watch it that's other global subscribers about one hundred fifty million. So almost a third of their subscribers. They say watched it. And when they say watched it, they said watch seventy percent of it. That's what they clock as a watch at least on bird box seventy percent. And I have to imagine. If somebody watched seventy percent of it. They probably watch the whole thing that also doesn't count into fact that most people I, you know, I sure a lot of people just chill and watch. Netflix by themselves. A lot of people watch it with family members. They watch it with friends movie like Berta walks. Probably was watched by several people in one sitting in the number is actually probably higher today. We got numbers from Nielsen. Now. It should be said let does not release numbers on. How many people watched anything? So that's why we were all surprised by when they said that forty five million people had watched it. They don't release those numbers. Nielsen and other companies have tried to try to net flicks numbers before and they come out with their numbers. And that's looks as said, no, that's not true. But is out today. And they're saying in the US twenty six twenty six million people watched it in that first week alone. And so if you're looking at forty five million globally. That's what Netflix is twenty six million in the US that seems to be a number that would correlate and back up what Netflix said because that would just they would just need another twenty million or so around the rest of the world to a watched it. So it's looking like the, yeah, this is a massive massive hit for Netflix. It's still hard to believe. I mean, you were used to numbers like ten million or twenty million watch the Super Bowl or an episode of friends or whatever. But twenty six million is about one in every twelve or fifteen Americans. That's just I didn't so friend of ours here at the radio station Jason went around and started to ask people online in person. Anyway, he could reached forty seven people. And he said did you watch it in about eight of them? Did I know that's anecdotal? But. It just seemed to us. That's probably not. So here's the question. I guess why is net flicks? So coy about its numbers because they don't need to bow down to any kind of pressure when it comes to subscribers or when it comes to advertisers or anything like that. Which is usually why we get numbers from the networks because advertisers are involved, and they want people to know, how many people are watching their products or they know how to price it when it comes to add for Netflix. It's just subscribers, and it really doesn't matter to them to to let the rest of us know, how many people watch stuff because as long as people are subscribing and subscribers are up in the they're doing good business on that those numbers for their own internal use. And they just don't want to share it, except when they do want to share it when they released the bird box numbers. And, you know, quite frankly, it's something that drives a lot of us in this industry. Crazy because we want to know what to cover. But we also want to know what people are watching. So we know how to cover stuff, and we know what to cover because nobody's watching something. Then. With so many shows out there. There's more than four hundred and fifty scripted shows on television right now that includes net Netflix and the other streaming services. We just don't have time to focus on everything. And Netflix is dropping on us sometimes up to nine or ten new things every week. So we need to know where to focus our stuff where the audience is what people are paying attention to Netflix. Giving us that information. It makes it really hard. Now, something can drop on that and become a big hit. And you know, it is because people are talking about it like fuller house or orange is the new black the Kaminsky method just winning a Golden Globe for net flicks. So people are watching those things and talking about those. So we know how to cover those. But with a lot of their stuff. We just don't we have no idea how many people are actually watching which makes you then suspicious of them in their methods. But the irony is the stuff they put out the content is so good these days, both on Netflix, Amazon, etc. I mean, there's just so much terrific content out there right now. I mean there is and it's it's overwhelming for the viewers. And that's that's where people like me. And then those in my industry come in because we can kind of help sit through that. And and point out and highlight some of the stuff that might be worth your time or not with your time. And if we don't know who's watching or how many people are watching stop it makes it a little tough to do that. But at the end of the day, you know, we can only watch so much we can only review so much. So we try to keep up with it. But there's so much out there if you feel overwhelmed at home. You know, my inbox is full right now with screeners of shows. I'm never gonna get to it's funny too. Because we're so impatient. So Brandon I plowed through the bodyguard in love that series. But I think it was only six about our long episodes. So we were able to consume that in a couple of nights that could have been, you know, a month and a half the way TV shows used to be consumed. So now, we're like, okay, we need another series to plow through. So we found the night watchman. I think it was called. And that was terrific and we had that like a snack. So now, we are appetite is as veracious as the content is that's coming out. Right. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, and and there was a time when the six episodes, you mentioned a bodyguard that is a British model they usually do six episodes for their series. They did that you remember for the original office. There was six episodes, and so many other things and there was a time where I'd be like, hey, you know, I want more I want 'cause we're used to in the US on a network show. You get twenty two episodes a year something around that you love watching all the episodes. And you know, you really feel really feel connected to show when you watch somebody episodes. So when you only get six feel a little cheated, but in this day and age picks episode seems like that's a that's a great number because there's so much to watch you can't possibly watch twenty two episodes of something and keep watching, you know, ten fifteen twenty different shows six I actually like six when we we have just six episodes to watch these days, although you do feel a little bit cheated because when you get to the end you want more. Yeah. Six seven ten is. A nice number for me. Twenty two does seem bloated in a way a couple of other entertainment talk, topics. The Jason Nathanson is writing and talking about the ABC news entertainment correspondent and another one of them is Kevin Hart. What's the status of the possibility that he'll host the Oscars almost zero at this point? He talked a little bit more yesterday on his Sirius XM talk show straight from the heart and address the controversy. Again, he apologized again. He said he made it very clear he wants to apologize for his remarks that hurt the members of the LGBTQ community. He said again, he reiterates. I apologize. But when it comes to actually doing the show, you said, I don't have time to prepare and do it correctly at this point and the microscope. He said on him is so thick that they're looking for everything. So anything that he says that's not appropriate. That's wrong because you're gonna to me apart. So at this point, I don't think it's something that he wants to do or feels he has the time to do. So we're wondering who's going to host the Oscars at this point? It's a little over a month away. And they don't have a host. And it's looking more and more like they're not going to have a host. They might just use a lot of the famous people that are going to be in the audience to present and do little bits and things like that. And we won't have one singular host. But did you think of Andy Sandberg and Sandra oh at the Golden Globes? They were fine. I the thing about the Golden Globes is usually return to that for something a little racier if you think of the days of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Ricky Jay vase as a host. I really liked those and they were playing to us in the audience, those of us watching at home and watching it on the screen, Sandra. Oh, and Andy Sandberg seemed to be playing to those in the room. So they were a lot nicer a lot gentler. There was some little arcs. But I I like it when it gets a little racy and cure Hollywood a little bit. I think a lot of us at home like that. So it was a little too tame for me. And it wasn't something that necessarily popped the ratings were good. And I said you can't really base the host to blame or really take credit for the ratings the ratings for the Golden Globes were good. They did not go down which is positive in this year because he'd been looking last year the Oscars and the Grammys both lost someone in the neighborhood of six million viewers year-over-year, and some could say that has to do with politics shows getting political I think it has to do more with what we were just talking about the fact that there's just so much on TV and people the way people watch TV and watch things has changed. Viewer habits have changed. So people are watching fewer and fewer things like award shows and big things like that. We've seen that in football as well. The number of people watching is gone down as well. And some say that's political too. But I think mostly it has to do with viewing habits Chris rock was he interested in doing the Oscars. I don't know if he was interested or they approached in after the Kevin Hart thing or not. But he said last night, he was at the New York Film, Critics Circle he was presenting an award, and he got up there and then kinda rift and he noticed Steve Martin in the crowd. And he said Steve Martin is here, you should host the Oscars, you're the best and he said because I'm not doing it. You're not going to do. He's done it twice before. And and especially in this climate when Kevin Hart everything gets picked apart. It's it's tougher comedian to get up there. And you don't want to say something that that some people are gonna take the wrong way. Well, and so so, Sandra. Oh, and Andy Sandberg went the other direction and their stick was how nice they were. They're cutting remarks were you know, fantastically kind. And that was supposed to be funny. But I think that stick out old really quick because it just wasn't funny enough. I'm not pining for the days of Ricky Gervais spit. You mentioned his name. And remember how awful he was and how scandalously funny and fun. It was. But I don't know that we have an appetite for that right now. I I don't know what tone a presenter should take. You're right. And that's why nobody wants to do it because they don't know either. We're in a different climate where did diff. Day and age right now where Ricky surveys could not host a show because it would just it would every single thing. He said would get picked apart..
