"Johnson had been asked whether the pelicans front office acted in good faith from the time to trade request became public until the deadline passed without a deal earlier on ESPN radio on the NBA insiders common. Wisdom would say the Lakers lucked out. You know, I think if Boston was in play then maybe, but knowing that Davis was not an expiring contract had still had another year left on his contract that this was going to go pass the deadline. The interesting thing would have been if if the Lakers would have offered four first round picks. What would they would they would know Orleans have done? And I think Jordan that you look at the package. I mean, it was a solid offer wasn't like it was a, you know, I'll give you a future. I and one of you pick one young player here. But the I mean, hey, we'll we'll learn this summer if the lake if the pelicans were learned to regret it or if to something better will come down the road. Yeah. I think sometimes we think about deals that don't happen. And we we we look at the repercussions. And for Boston. You could easily say that they are the biggest winners, or at least one of the bigger winners of the deadline because of the fact that they can now get into this Anthony Davis sweepstakes. And if you just you think hypothetically, go back to the draft when the Lakers take ball second had they taken Jason Tatum or or maybe a the FOX perhaps this deal gets done. But obviously the the pelicans didn't want ball field doesn't get done. And now Boston who obviously has not played. Great week. We heard Morris talk last night about the not competing, but they have an opportunity big picture wise to assert themselves to the Anthony Davis sweepstakes, which is up from that. They couldn't do because of the roles rule. So I if I'm a Celtics fan, I'm extremely excited right now. Obviously, if you're the Celtics your heights, right? But again, the Celtics are sort of have bigger fish to fry right now in the present day. But when you look at this Lakers potential and the deal, and how it really transpired. It's been really interesting because you know, everyone feels like okay, maybe, quote, unquote, LeBron or magic like with the way this was happening. So publicly no matter how hard they tried. Maybe the pelicans were like on a spectacle. We're sort of mad. You know, there's sort of emotional about it like even came out and said, we're not endorsing this type of behavior. I mean, we saw it in all star draft. We're making jokes about the potential tampering repercussions that are happening. So I thought it was really interesting that there was there was an idea that Magic Johnson pretty much had to contend with that. These pelicans plans may not. Have been done pretty much in good faith. So magic pretty much says, hey, we knew from the beginning our hands kind of forced. But like I feel like deep in my heart. I kind of feel like, Bobby. The Lakers sorta got played these sort of felt like, oh, we're out here playing chess. But in fact, they were playing checkers against the pelicans. Well, I think a lot of it's the rare late January trade demand that a player asked for usually. It doesn't happen that way it usually happens in the off season here. And and and basically, I know there was a list of four which is really a list of one. That that, you know, the agent Rich Paul tried to force Anthony Davis to Los Angeles, and it and it it didn't work out. And I I really think Lakers kind of dodge the bullet here because I just look at man. Basically, you gave up you're going to give up everyone mean, we'll take Rondo, and Beasley and Stevenson's at equation because those guys are inexperienced. But I mean, what is left what is left to that roster? I mean, you have Salman hill. AD LeBron fifteen million dollars in cap space. Jordan, Jordan, Jordan. And you've seen the Carmelo fact. I I if I'm a Laker fan. I'm actually somewhat relieved do my only concern is that Boston is now going to get into the mix. "State coffers that can be spent on things like schools and healthcare and roads. Anyway, here's what I wanted to say. And it kills me. I didn't get to say this on mar. But the panel ran on time in states where we've legalized weed recreational weed politicians mostly democratic politicians are moving to vacate convictions and dismiss charges for pop. Session as Jay Inslee. Governor washing state who also would like to be president. As Jay Inslee said earlier this month, we should not be punishing people for something that is no longer illegal employing that same logic there. Vacating pot possession conviction San Francisco and Denver New York City because we shouldn't be punishing people for something that is no longer illegal, but just as it's no longer illegal to possess pot. It's no longer illegal to deal pot to sell pot. Their legal pot shops all over Seattle is now legal to possess large quantities of pot. No longer illegal. It's also now no longer legal to deal pot. No longer illegal to grow Pont. So if we're going to vacate charges and convictions for possessing small amounts of pot for personal use because it never should have been a crime in the first place. We should also be vacating convictions and dismissing charges for nonviolent offenses related to growing and dealing pot. Because those things should never have been crimes. Either and are no longer criminal now. So it's not just these misdemeanor marijuana charges and convictions and need to come off people's records. But foul any marijuana charges and convictions for growing and selling, oh and all the people who had their assets seized under civil asset forfeiture laws or violent pot crimes should be made whole they should have their assets return to them with interest, these politicians and states and cities and counties where they've legalized pot talk a lot about how pot laws, and they might want to talk to Michael Bloomberg about how this works about how pot laws possession laws criminalizing, marijuana disproportionately impacted communities of color, white kids could get away with things that kids of color could not and it wasn't just on the possession front families and communities of color and otherwise we're harmed by possession with intent to distribute charges and convictions by marijuana sale with distribution charges and convictions by marijuana cultivation charges and convictions by hash and concentrates. Charges and convictions by marijuana paraphernalia charges and convictions. And all of these people who were harmed by these things by these laws who were punished for growing and selling something that it is no longer illegal to grow and sell. They should be cleared to because like Jay Inslee. Sad gonna say it again, we should not be punishing people for something. That is no longer illegal. "I feel like this has got to be the deciding stretch for Carmelo Anthony at this point who obviously his tenure in Oklahoma City was not what we expected it to be certainly the tenure Houston right now has been anything. But what we? Expected it to be and so all these things adding up for a guy who's now entering official journeyman status after a career in Denver New York that at least saw him as the headliner albeit on acts that maybe didn't perform at the highest level with him at the helm. Now, you've got a guy who is used to being the alpha who so much of what we talk about is finding a role that he's not comfortable in coming off the bench being a guy that works as more of a member of the support staff in this than someone who's a main player. How does Carmelo Anthony deal with that becomes the question because Los Angeles as an option only really is viable and make sense if they're able to write this ship with LeBron coming back healthy because that's the other portion of this. Los Angeles piece is that we inch closer and closer to that trade deadline, and we've still got a very injured LeBron James and very injured Los Angeles Lakers team that's already a hodgepodge of one year deals. That's alright. Been dealing with the growing pains of trying to get a young team to just survive this stretch without LeBron James, and it sounds like with LeBron James still going to be out this Thursday, Rondo I believe regime Rondo is going to be back. It sounds like for their Thursday game this week. But we know the season hangs in the balance with LeBron James. And now you've had Lonzo ball out as well. You've had a team that is young and injured him without their central force without LeBron James you go back to what the Lakers were last year. Which is. Yeah, we know we've got space. We've got young guys as tradable assets. We've got maybe a couple of guys like how Kuzina that we can keep around to be a part of the future going forward. But ultimately all of that leads me back to is Carmelo Anthony for them. Still the piece you want to add I don't think Carmelo Anthony in that construct without the benefit of LeBron James being on the court again. Then and putting them in a position to be a playoff bound squad makes a ton of sensitive Lakers. But we know he is someone that LeBron James has a relationship with. He's someone that LeBron James is played with on USA basketball. We know the whole banana boat crew connection with these guys. And so ultimately, I believe he's going to end up on the Lakers provided. Lebron James is back with plenty of time before that transaction needs to take place. But what that ultimately nets them is to me secondary to what is it become for Carmelo because he's not going to go to Los Angeles and start he shouldn't go to Los Angeles and start, but if he can go there and turn himself into a viable bench player because I said this before the season when Carmelo Anthony was searching for a new home, Houston or Los Angeles seemed to be the landing spots because you would have guys that he respects in Chris Paul and Houston and LeBron James in Los Angeles that. Could maybe bring out the best in what's left and Carmelo in this new role that could convince him that this is a way for him to not only be affective? But to be highly productive. It'd be productive in the ways. We know Carmelo Anthony values authencity and could put him in the best spot for that. That's to me, what's at stake down the stretch for a guy who we've seen be so great. And like all people talk about it's difficult to watch a guy who's been such an offensive force now relegated to being treated, essentially, like cash considerations that could send along to sit and wait for their next destination wanna see success for mellow, but it doesn't seem overwhelmingly likely at this first and last podcast first and last podcast every Tuesday and Thursday around this time, we like to head out to New York check in and I make sure some of our east coast brethren and sisters have not frozen to death yet at this point because the deep freeze that settled in the last. Couple of days has been less than stellar for everyone involved. But as we.

"Mary mcavennie is chief marketing officer at open road integrated media which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year open road was mentioned in a New York Times article about the trove of books published in nineteen Twenty-three that will enter the public domain in two thousand nineteen. I connected with Mary by Skype between Denver New York City on January second, and I began by asking her why nineteen Twenty-three may turn out to be again. A big year for book lovers. Significance nineteen Twenty-three at least in part is that it will be the largest collective copyright expiration more than twenty years or actually since they passed the Sonny Bono act. And so a lot of works for the first time, we'll be coming into the public domain that had been granted a reprieve under that act that said, of course, you know, as as you know from talking with. Many people that have been rode the age of a work doesn't diminish its importance at all in our eyes, and many cases, of course, not just us. But everyone in publishing appreciate the importance of measuring long jet one Jedi of influence to readers, right? But. We, of course, are very focused on bringing back that list and public domain titles. Of course are part of that. It's something that our audience appreciates. We've seen a lot of demand for their is folks in the public domain in the past. And we're really looking forward to bringing more out this year when a book becomes available in the public domain. That's a different acquisition process than if you're working with the estate of an author. I and there's upsides and downsides to one of them being that everybody can access it..
