"Really want to share. Maybe what if if you have seen changes between when you went through grad school or university and what you see happening today in terms of you know being a woman being a woman of color being being non binary woman of color. Can you talk a little a little bit about the good things that you're seeing happening and how they compared to maybe some experiences that you've had. Yeah yeah so so i. I did identify as women for most. I've always identified as gender queer. But like i've i've occupied women's spaces and had that experience for most of a career and i. It's it's a tough question so it's changed and it hasn't changed. There are definitely. I've seen a lot more top down. I've seen a lot more Administration and kind of structural changes that go in positions. The committee Just this focus on evaluating truly evaluating. How faculties students are are engaging in participating in diversity in in most importantly inclusive efforts which is a cultural shift Not just numerical ship. So i've seen a lot more of that and that's really great. I think it's feel personally. It might just be where. I am in my career and the kind of accolades. I have behind me at this point. But i feel much more comfortable speaking out when something is not okay than i did before I feel like even. If i was an i often am the only black person in the room and somebody says something and no pun intended off color. I feel like if i were to stand up and say something. My white colleagues would be in support rate. That's something that. I think certainly didn't happen to grad school for so that's nice. I like to see that. But then there's also i think we haven't quite had the collective realization about how much has to change War to to actually make a truly inclusive environment And so in that frame. There's kind of like at the individual level at at like the bottom up like who however we rallying to really care about that that's still lacking again because i think we frankly just don't sit down and have the practice of thinking about what the future is. What's it gonna look like. What's what's the classroom physically going to look like. what's lecture actually going to contain. How all of these things. It really sit down and quantify so much scientists as thinkers. But we're not sitting down to quantify what that actually what's it gonna look like. What the end result. How do we actually predict. There's no practice of that And so it's kind of like this. Big hand wavy gray mass. We're like yeah. We're making it better but you. You can't actually make it better if you don't have a goal in mind and so there we really need to see that progress still feels like we need to have some inclusiveness you x. specialist user experience versus to kind of model. What it's going to actually feel like for the for the users war in this case the the students. Yeah question are there. You've you've had to clearly from what you're saying deal with some some some difficulties some exclusion in or you know in your in your path. But were their strategies. Were there things you did or poor people in your path that that were helpful and that you can You know the yeah. They were helpful with that. And are there. Is there some advice for someone who's now at this institution or even in this group sometimes. It's just there's group dynamics writers group culture that is those somehow not so accepting and and that's that's difficult. Is there some advice you can give based on your experience of overcoming these obstacles and coming out stronger after yeah and my advice is echoed by research have a support group has abort group has support group having support group. Have people you can go and go back to your base code. Go back to that natural language. Drop your guard you know. Be yourself be really comfortable. You gotta have those the especially as any sort of minorities especially as intersectional a have your support group for intersectional people. I will acknowledge it. Super hard like for me. For example. Black spaces aren't always queer friendly spaces. Queer friendly spaces aren't always black friendly spaces as really hard thing to navigate. Still even if you're not fully relaxed even if you can't find a black. We are space for example at combination. Even those little bits that you get steps to single person even it goes so far There was one fellow who i think about as mentor. I can't i know his name is added. can't remember his last name but he was a new faculty. he was working in molecular biology at u. Dub i was in bio so we were in the same hallway and i would see him in the hallway. We kinda wave at each other walking by and then when he pulled me aside we just started chatting and anytime i saw him. We would just like stop in the hallway and chat for two or three minutes. Maybe we got a coffee and it was just this idea. It really created this sense of of of culture for meaning academia of what. I really nurtured a thing i needed. And it set the precedent right. Like here's someone. When i see someone frequently you're part of my community. I should have relationship with you to some degree and so in that that. That's someone that i think about a lot. That's a it's a behavior. I think about a lot. How can i bring that forward And i think things like that are also really important like looking at how people give you the cultural needs. Meet your cultural needs and how you can help that with some. Bring that to somebody else.

I guess I would be the older that, that would be the case. Okay. So John, you're the older brother. By ten years, believe it or not, how okay great. And when did you get into music personally, and then I'll ask Jesse. I question when did you start getting into music? His answer might mirror mind. Our father is musician. So he was a drummer. He is a drummer still currently. And so from probably before I can recall. So you, you, you always, you always knew you wanted to be a musician. Well, it didn't seem like a prosperous. Lifespan. But yes. Okay. All right. Yeah. Jesse? What about your same thing? Your dad is obviously the same dad and he's a drummer. So tell me about your year, a getting into music. Yeah, it was the same thing like right from the beginning. You know, like Jones up before I can remember, I know I was, you know. Drums all the time. Yeah. Now John, did you did you not gravitate to the drums? I did actually I'm a drummer, first and foremost. And this happened later in life, and I had a little guitar experience, and everyone said, hey, you sound like David Byrne. You know, maybe you should you should sing. All right. So the, the well you must have grown up. You gotta father is a drummer you guys. Do you guys my grown up in a loud house? My, my statement is my mother is a Saint that has yet to be recognized. There were a lot of people drums sets. Yeah. I would imagine, imagine you guys. Are you guys just the only siblings? Did you have any other brothers and sisters just the two? It's so okay, but still both drumming like the dad. Yeah. Your mom must have been your mom must be a Saint, that's all there is to it gonna be. Yeah. It was good. It was a good twenty five thirty years of drums, Bentley. That's unbelievable now where are you guys from John, where you where you get from? We, we currently all reside in need Bethlehem Pennsylvania area, which is right over the border from New Jersey Pennsylvania, but a good chunk of the band was born and raised in New Jersey and the tri-state metro area. Okay. All right. And how long have you been? How long have you by how long it start making sense? Together. We are in our tents years as a band, and you tour around the country doing this. We, we do we absolutely do where weekend warriors for the most part. We certainly play more than that. But for the most part, it's Thursday, Friday, Saturday Friday, Saturday every week ten months out of the year. Wow. That's boy, oh boy, that's a lot of traveling Jesse. You enjoy being on the road. Yeah. Man. It's great. Well, where we get to go to a lot of places where have you been telling Jesse tell me about some of the places you guys play. We do a lot of up and down the east coast, you know, from Maine to Florida, and I guess, maybe like the last five years, or so we've been heading out, west further and further. So we've, we've been doing Sakata go for a while. We do you know Denver, Fort Collins, area and Geos stuffy months ago debuted on the west coast in Seattle and Portland. You guys get big crowds. When you go to New York, I would imagine. Your your the bigger cities. I. Yeah. Well, I mean there from New York, so that's why I figured you'd be big. But that's now you guys outside of start making sense. What other music is you are you involved in John. We actually Jesse and I are both in original band called ruby dear. With one of the backup singers from start making sense, Jenny founds. She plays guitar and saying, so the three of us have a trio doing all original music called ruby. Dear. Oh, that's great man. That's really cool. In the you guys have you recorded stuff. We do. We have a full length album out and were playing whenever we're not doing this. And actually we open for our selves, sometimes. Oh, dear. Yep. So that's ruby. Dear. Is there a website where people can check out the music? Yeah. Rubira music dot com and all the streaming services have everything as well. Do you enjoy the, you know, obviously, you're having fun doing the, the, the talking heads thing. But you gotta really love doing your own stuff, right? Well, I it's a balance between the two, you know, one of the, the kind of unspoken or actually spoken the. Things we have is one more, not, if we're not having fun doing start making sense, will stop. Yeah, you know, we're not gonna we're not gonna do this just to just to do it. Right. You know there's a lot of tribute bands out there, and we've feel as though it's important that you enjoy what you do. So it's at point ever comes, we will stop doing it. What's the what's it? What about the songwriting process for ruby dear? Tell me about that. Do you guys write the songs all together? Jesse? You wanna take that. Yeah. Sure. So the, the I'd say the core or the bulk of the song comes comes from Jenny, and then the three of us kind of sit down and work it out. She writes kinda, you know, on piano, or guitar comes up with the, the chords and the melody, and then we kinda arrange it with the three of us. And so, so you guys you guys play out pretty regularly. Then they must be fun to open for It is it really really is. It's interesting because we're we're throwing some it's a little harder edged music than than talking heads. So it's interesting to throw it out and see what people respond to in that setting. Yeah. Yeah. Have you guys ever played martyrs here in Chicago before? We absolutely have I was in an original band for a very long time that toward the country relentlessly and. Going on fifteen eighteen years of playing martyrs. It's a great room. It's one of the best rooms in the city. It's one of the best rooms in the country, I would argue. Yeah, yeah. I haven't traveled arrive in traveled around a lot to a lot of venues, but all I know is that here in this city martyrs is right near the top of, you know, places to see shows absolutely. Every person that works there, every person that has worked there, all of them top top to bottom, or a wonderful people, and it's truly just a room for music. Yeah. First and foremost, absolute, John, what was the band that you were in that you two are all over the place with. Insidious rays was the name of the band. Okay. And you guys go ahead. Oh, just a independent rock and roll punk rock funk, psychedelic country band, or for about ten years ago that kind of thing I know that sound unfamiliar with water. Yeah. Yeah, that'll that old cliche. Yeah. Right. There. Right in martyrs. Jesse Jesse how long you been playing out and stuff? Well, probably fifteen years or so. Yeah. Started started gigging like most of us in, you know, local punk rock bands and stuff. And then, you know, I, I guess I was about twenty when we started start making sense, so. Okay. All right. Hang on. Okay. I want to talk more about that. I want to talk about the talking heads in about your show. That's coming up. You got two shows Friday and Saturday at martyrs this weekend guys. Hang on. Okay. Okay. There's John Brennan, who is the lead singer plays. Guitar for start making sense and his brother, Jesse Braun who plays drums. We're gonna come back and talk more about talking heads about their band about their gigs at martyrs this weekend. And we'll do that, right. If we take a break here on seven twenty WGN. Five.

"Frank with rich teams. How are you? Hope you're doing. Well, I gotta tell you. I am so jealous of people that are able to attend Yasser Vegas when I can't be there. If you just go once you're hooked for life. Unfortunately, fortunately, and unfortunately, the same time I've been able to attend several times. But now this year wasn't able to go. But it's okay because Dana Wollman who's the chief editor or the editor in chief of and gadget, which is one of my favorite websites of all time joins me this morning from CBS, which is unofficially wrapping up silk goes on for a few more days. It doesn't it. Yes. Good morning and actually it goes through tomorrow. So we had two full days left show. I mean, how many times have you gone already? Number ten for me. Oh my God. So you can see looking back ten years ago to now. I mean, it's obviously better and better and more and more things that they bring out or just incredibly amazing. Absolutely. You know, some people say that every year the changes of the product or little minor sometimes, but I think I entered in the debt book era now, you know, what's in that book. It's really something. I mean, you see products of products that will ship this year that you can even buy right now. Then the other the other end of the spectrum are somebody's futuristic concept that might never come out or are guide to come out five ten years from now. So it's really a pretty wide spectrum of products. Yeah. I always hated the things that might come out five or six years from now several years ago, I took my first trip to Tokyo specifically for gadgets to find out some things that I could buy their that. I couldn't buy here. And I remember seeing I think back in nineteen Ninety-two went in the hotel room. We had HDTV which we obviously didn't have here at that time and ever since then I mean, I'm I'm like a go nuts for gadgets. So tell me about the things that you found that I could buy right now. So LG is getting a lot of attention for its it actually showed a version of it last year. But it wasn't quite ready yet. Now, it's actually for sale and the idea that it's a big screen TV that when it's fully rolled out its big TV. It takes up a lot of space. But then it kinda rolls back into place and out of sight. Which is I think indeed, I don't like the idea of a large TV being the focal point of their living room, and sort of dominating the space that way, you know, I saw that an aversion of that in one thousand nine hundred ninety two where it was so poster board size where you could put together like a TV with six of those and they were portable you could fold it up and take it to your friend's house or to your school or work. Whatever it is. So I'm guessing from what you're what I'm hearing from you is that this is the board. Vance version of it which actually stays in the house because mounts to the wall where it rolls back up into. Absolutely. Yeah. And LG has been talking about this for quite some time. But now this is one of the products that you can by this year. So that's exciting for those who can afford it. You know, obviously, the biggest in nurse flagship TV's come out of this show are often very expensive, which makes it sort of an aspirational product. But it is still sort of neat to get right up there and see them one of the things I saw one of your guys write about was the LG forty nine inch this alter white monitor which is just I mean, just a dream for people who multitask and a computer forty nine inch ultra-wide what does something like that going for. I can't quote you the price off hand. But I think you're you're right that there has been quite a few really barge scale monitors at the show. Dell also had one that I believe a fifty five inches and that one was that just four. Really serious gamers. That is the thing that we've seen a couple of times here at the show this week. And it's dad's a lot of screen real estate to have just inches away from your face, right? If you're sitting. So what about the things that? We don't want that they're showing this year. Well, so companies are still figuring out which kinds of products should be part products. I don't think they'd quite figured out yet which wants the bark once in which once they don't. So some of the sillier things we've seen a smart treadmill for cats. Also smart litter box for cats. So those are starting to sillier things, but at the same time now, the bakers of the instinct pot out that sort of multi purpose of kitchen appliance that now has Google assistant built in some people might actually appreciate being able to give it voice command. There's a spectrum is always of utility somebody's product or for useful than others. And some just have technology for the sake of technology. Pretty amazing. I I gotta tell you. I've said this often on the show and gadget is probably in my top three favorite websites of all time. I go there every day to get information for my show. And I it's great to have you on the show and hopefully get shot again. And also, hopefully, you're me back on Twitter because I follow you. Fantastic. Thank you having me. Thank you. To keep in touch. Thank you so much for being here today. Take care. Thank you have a good day. She gets got a little bit scared at the other. Was it may ask her to follow me back on Twitter? I think you probably caught off guard. Yeah. I think I like cats are people off guard every once in a while, but truly if you've never been to that website. It's E N G A G E dot com. And they are in the know, and they get information obviously before anybody else does. And I have found so many products that were must have. List for reading about it on there. And also, they give you not all only things that you shouldn't get but warnings on some products that you may or may not have to begin with. So. Let's see if she follows me back so far she hasn't. But I know she had to go to do a couple of other radio interviews for me to do it lady think's gonna follow back dot fell back. I would say forecast not good. Okay. What do you base set? Hurry action. Somebody just take a Bill by just text him. He says because I sat at to stalker ish that that's why she would call me back. It's not really considered stalker ish. If you follow somebody wants them to follow you back when you have people that are big shots like her. You know, it's a big deal to get them to follow. You. That's all. I mean, I remember saying the same thing. Eric trump. The president's son was totally normal. Why would we talking precedent? Just did it right then. And there, you know. So now, not only can I text him. But I could direct message on Twitter. Which I thought was pretty cool. The other story that I wanted to tell you about and this is something that we could start this conversation. I'm not exactly sure where this is going to go, but I was going to wait till eleven o'clock. But quite frankly, can't wait frontier. Airlines is now encouraging tipping flight attendants. Let me give you the phone number here. Eight seven seven eight fifty eight five five eight seven seven eight fifty eight five eighty five because I know you're going to want to call on this flight attendants on the airline began accepting individual tips on January first passionate toward refreshments. Get a prompt from frontiers payment system that they have the option to leave a tip of some flight attendants labor unions are opposed to the tip in policy. Instead the flight attendants should be paid more money. Instead. Is this another group of people that have their hands out all the time? Working for tips. Eight seven seven eight fifty eight five eighty five there's a restaurant that I go to. And it's I don't wanna I don't wanna tell you anything about it. Because I don't want to bad about the restaurant. I love the restaurant but used to be that you would go and get your plate of whatever you wanted. And then if you finish your drink. They would refill the drink for you. Instead now, they stopped doing that. And they you have to go refill your own drinks. And yet the spectrum. Because they're taking the plates off the table. And that's one of those places. That's kind of like, okay. Well, they did that I should tip them for that. But it shouldn't be a lot of money because you know, the standard twenty percent or some say fifteen or eighteen percent because I really did all the work. They just took the the plate something even fill up the drinks on the other hand every once in a while you get somebody that does fill up the drinks. And that's somebody you want to give a full tip to. The typical flight attendant. There's a part of me that says that sound bad idea you tip a cab driver never understood why people tip cab drivers. Second long time ago. I learned that. The guy that was cutting my hair when I lived in New York was the owner of the salon, and I used to give him a nice tip. And then somebody said some conversation avenue radio actually in New York on WPRO Jay, and I was saying that. I think I'm tipping by hairstyles too, much and a girl on showed me says why I said well because I just found out he's the owner. And she said you never tip the owner. I never knew that that a five tenants are not the owners. But if it's the owner of a restaurant, you're not supposed to tip the meter because from falls under the same category. A problem with frontier. Airlines encouraging chipping the flight attendants is you're probably see delta, and then United and then American Airlines and everybody fall into the same category and start everybody will be I mean, everybody's got the handout now as it is not as much as during Christmas time. But I want you to think about this for a minute. What where does this? And where do you draw the line and say enough is enough? I'm paying enough for this. As it is. Why do I need to tip on top of all these things? And this is one of those cases where frontier airlines, it's not it's not one of these cheap airlines their tickets are, you know, or at least they were when I flew in from Denver Fort Lauderdale Denver to west Pablo and it had a hub in West Palm for. I guess about a year at least to come down to see my mom who's much more convenient for me to fly into West Palm Fort Lauderdale. And then there's another side of the frontier story. So maybe maybe this was leaving me a little jaded. I'm not sure but years ago, they slammed the door to the cabin on. My foot broke my foot. Because we had a relationship with them at a radio station in Denver, the general manager had this talk of three and said. You're not gonna sue them. Right. And I said, well, yeah. They broke by foot. They wouldn't. They wouldn't allow me to do it. Better a statue of limitations, eight seven seven eight fifty five eighty five let's go to Nick and del Ray. What do you think tip and flight attendants? Hey, rich are another ridiculous story. You hit it. Right..
