"Not sports movie ever, Ron Shelton, who wrote a book called the church of baseball about the making of bull Durham, a great book about the inside stuff on making a movie. How do you make a movie? And certainly one of the greatest movies that we still quote today, he'll be here in studio all our number three. Mark Hubbard, who is grinding it out on the PGA Tour. He joins us in advance of the John Deere. He was the one who got into last week's travelers when Brooks Koepka tapped out to join the live tour. So I figured, let's get him on and talk to him from his perspective on what's going on in the world of golf. Chris brockman might do two full sitting where they are. TJ Jefferson, you sitting where you are. Good to see you. We're going to go from a TJ to a DJ. Do you see how I made that? And I don't mean you, Mike, as a disc jockey. I don't mean you in that excited for a second there. No. I'm like, ready? Spin. I am actually referring to the man who's about to join us on the Mercedes Benz vans phone line. If I'm not mistaken, denniston Oliver Moore junior is about to join us, DJ Moore from the Carolina Panthers entering year 5 fresh off of a terrific season in Carolina here on the Mercedes Benz van's phone line on the rich eisen show. How are you doing DJ? I'm doing I appreciate you for my whole name out there today. What do you think? Is that a good thing or am I or is that something that you don't want out there? What do you think? What do you got for me on that? Not a lot of people know my whole name. Everybody that's been calling me DJ. So it's nice to know that somebody knew my whole name. Who calls you by your full name? Who does that on Planet Earth? Anybody? Nobody. At all. Okay. All right, not even when you're in trouble. I know my mom, when she called me Richard, I knew I was in deep trouble when she used my full name. I've never called me dinner since she just always had DJ. Okay, very good. Well, then let's call you DJ. Why not? Since everybody else does that. So what is your sense of the Carolina Panthers entering year 5 for you? In this NFL, what's your sense, DJ, of your team? I feel like we have a better system in place right now. We all understand the main goal this year is to be better than last year. Well, I want to be way better than last year because we didn't do too well. So everybody's name goes to just do way better than last year and just try to make the playoffs this year. What do you mean by better system? What do you mean by that? I feel like it's a better structure for us to go on into this year than previous years. So then what's the difference? Can you give me an example? DJ of what the difference is? I could tell you a little something right offense is way better than previous years. So we have a lot of upgraded weapons and calls that will help us out this year. Okay. And Ben mcadoo being the new OC and what's he brought to the equation? There. See, boy. A bunch of new things. I think that my first few years, we had, but then we got away from it. And now it's back. So just learning his terminology with things is really hard, but I mean, it's going to work in the long run. Well, when he was calling place for the Giants as the head coach there he had this huge, huge car that looked like a diner menu card. Does he still have that? You still have that going? For him? It's still around. I've seen it the first day. I was like, oh, who got no all that, but then you got there going with OTA that became simpler. It got a little awkward when you ordered a tuna melt off it. That might have been could have been like, what do you mean by that? DJ Moore here on the rich eisen show. And how are you a different receiver than when you first walked off the campus at Maryland into Carolina? DJ. This understanding the game better. My first few years, the game was pretty fast for me, so I had to adjust to that. The speed of the game. And then my layer half of my younger started to get slow. So I was able to just understand offenses better and just be able to do what I do when I get the ball of mine. Well, I mean, you had a terrific year last year. My colleague here, Chris brockman and I have a fantasy team together in a celebrity fantasy contest and you were on our team and we'd loved all of your production. And one of my favorite moments, DJ, this past year is when I got a chance to tell none other than Steve Smith that I was starting you every single week. What was that moment like for you from back in the day when if I'm not mistaken, did Steve ask about your fantasy value in front of you to Cam Newton? Did that happen a few years ago? DJ Moore? Yeah, that happened a few years ago. It was pretty awkward, but we'll do this later. It came back that he was just playing fantasy with his son. So I thought it was like a real league, but it was just a family league that he was playing in. On television who heard about it. All the stakes weren't that high, but still, you know what, I find, though, is that from Steve, if he does that, that means he likes you. That's what I think. I think you should have taken that as a compliment right in front of you. At first I didn't know how to take it, but then I got to know him more and understood where he was coming from with it. He's the he's one of the best. I mean, so are you still in contact with him? Is there any things that you pick up from him or he advises you on in any way, shape or form? DJ? Yeah, we stay in contact. Mostly, it's just a bad game or I do some silly out there on the field here, texting about it and really talk about it. But other than that, our relationship is good. We talk when we talk. He's here in Charlotte, so I know I could just hit him up and we could go talk about 75 and on my mind. DJ Moore, Carolina Panthers wide receiver here on the rich eisen show. Let's just dive into it. The quarterback spot. How is Sam darnold looking to you and handling everything in year two for him there? Fam, it's just like I could see a girl for him already from OTA. Everything has been hectic with off season for him and the news live. So with all the quarterbacks moving around and the way he just handled it, he was talking to everybody just was so poised and then he came in and just had to learn the new offense. He just took a full head on and he's been good with him and saw him with a quarterback thing. I haven't seen no downward spiral for him, but upwards for him right now. Well, I mean, look, he came in to New York with such fanfare and being drafted high and the irony now is the quarterback that was selected in front of him is potentially sitting out there because of what's going on with Baker Mayfield in Cleveland. Has any of that chatter filtered into your locker room huddle?.

Yes we had one of these radios which you turned on took a back ten minutes to warm up with all the veils and the only station we listen to the because producers didn't have its own radio station then was a bbc so we'd listened to the clock was listen to the news and then trip across the er bitam..

"We're now the white house today is it. There is one more week of us. Evacuation flights out of kabul thirty. One august is the president's deadline for us troops leaving. It is going to take a whole lot longer than that. Though to sort out the things about the american war in afghanistan that did not go as plan our slice of that today is the drug trade. Afghanistan is the world's biggest supplier of illegal opium despite washington spending almost nine billion dollars of the past couple of decades to change that. Jeffrey clemens is an associate professor of economics. At uc san diego who has studied the economics of opium cultivation in afghanistan. So when i talked to him the other day about this. I asked about the role. Obm in place in the afghan economy. According to estimates from the united nations in twenty twenty afghan farmers would have received something on the order of five hundred million dollars associated with sale selling the opium that they've cultivated and the estimated value of the heroin and other. Opiates as they crossed. The border out of afghanistan in into other countries is somewhere on the order of two billion dollars so that amount accounts for something like ten percent of its overall gdp. Okay here's the thing. The american government spent billions of dollars over the past twenty years trying to eradicate the opium trade. Obviously it has failed first of all. What was that a fool's errand. Yes i think. It was a fool's errand in large part because the cultivation of opium poppy by afghan farmers and the and then the trafficking of that opium and heroin out of the country is something that unfortunately just has made sense in terms of economic fundamentals within denniston. Take take a minute to unpack that. Yeah that'd be great actually sure so so the when we think about why afghanistan has played such a major role in the global trade in. Opiates there are few in some ways. Very mundane reasons why that's the case so for one. The agricultural end in afghanistan is not that great and opium. Poppy turns out to be a pretty hardy crop. A second issue is that the infrastructure in afghanistan has quite bad which means that. There's more risk than you might expect for. Cultivating relatively perishable crops opium tends to be relatively nonperishable. And it's also pretty lightweight for the for the cash value and then finally opium. Poppy is incredibly labor intensive to harvest and so an economy like afghanistan's where there isn't a lot of high tech capital associated with agricultural sector ends up being a place where opium. Poppy tends to thrive and so the the us international effort to suppress the opium. Trade is trying to push against all of these pretty basic economic fundamentals. Making it as as you said a fool's errand right right. You can't sort of beat the market as it were right so so now. The taliban in charge for the second time in twenty years a lot of the revenue that they can get from opium to be had from opium rather is about taxation. Do i have that right. that's correct. So there's there's sort of a mix of things which are understood for to varying degrees. I it just straight up taxes farmers in the same way that you might expect any other government to tax farmers or other other producers. The part on which there's sort of less information is the extent to which the taliban or its affiliates are directly involved with the kind of trafficking stage of getting the process opium and heroin out of the country. There's probably a mix of tangential involvement but also just continuing to kind of tax the trafficking organizations that are actually executing the process right. The question is have they vertically integrated the afghanistan opium industry. Right is that is at the. Yeah that's right right. Do you suppose an look. This is one of those unknowable. But i'm gonna ask it anyway do you. Do you suppose things might have been different for our effort there. If the united states had thought about opium a little bit differently. I do think so. Although of course it's very hard to quantify how important that might be but the win. In the mid two thousands the us substantially increased. Its expenditure on the effort to suppress the opium trade. What we saw after that effort increased was that the national production estimates barely budged. If anything they sort of went up over the long run but then even more importantly we saw that production of opium declined in the areas that the government did actually have control in. They rose in the areas where the taliban exerted more of its control and so this is a really bad outcome in the sense that the opium suppression effort. If anything kind of increased the talibans market power in in the global opium trade and now of course development is sort of reaping the benefits of that right. That's that's right. And of course on on the more micro level if you just think about the long run effort to to to win hearts hearts and minds so to speak. What part of what's going on in this process is that the opportunities for households that were inclined to cultivate opium. Poppy in that might have been favorably disposed to the government. They saw their opportunities reduced by the opium suppression effort whereas the households in taliban-controlled areas. If anything saw their opportunities rise and so in addition to just the economics of how much is the taliban profiting from the opium trade the effort to win hearts and minds is also was also clearly adversely affected by this effort. It's an interesting historical ring to that phrase hearts and minds. I'm just saying indeed jeffrey clements. He's a professor of economics at the university of california san diego. Just down the road professor. Thanks for your time..

"One thing that learned from the wolves. The death spent a lot of time playing three type of games. The games are chasing wrestling and tug of war. When you think about the skills that they need to master in order to be good hunters is to chase the animal directly to the ground grabbing the leg rubbing the neck and then to tag tag on the neck to kill it and then to rip it to pieces so they can eat so when we look at dogs all play chasing wrestling war now if we look at any sport let's look at the nba or football. Everybody of the position. Dan not all doing the same that everybody else want. He's a point guard one center one day with tom. Brady's role ease of quarterback so dogs are one of them. Some of them going to be really good at chasing some of them going to be really good at at wrestling. Some of them really going to be a tug of war. So when i work with people that tell me. My dog is tugging at my role being the morning immediately. I know the dog is inviting his parents to play a game of tug of war casino. You can win that game the way human toddler or five year old is going to invite you to play the computer game that they know they can win it. They know they're going to kick your butt. It right talks at the same. So when i go back to that klein. It does me the doggy stealing socks in what he's doing with his socks. Iran's away and ascend what do you do when he runs away with his song. He says after. Stop working and chasing anything thing. Ding ding denniston. Is that a dog training problem. No it's a relationship problem and instead the dog wants you to pay attention to him and the owner tells me. But i'm here an icee liza clear here but you're not prison to the relationship. You're not present to you dog. How many relationships do you know where people are completely with each other. I've no idea nothing about each other is no nothing going on between them and i said the only time did dog gets you to be engaged with him. He's when he standing socks and he got it and he says so. What do i do so clearly. The talk training that the is done before was correcting the dog but the problem was that they did not find another way to do what to meet. The dogs needs. If i need a core need is not going to be. Mitt you can get rid of a need is not a preference speak to the dogs and human beings you got it. We need to meet the needs. They'll odd the only way for a dog to meet. The need of interaction is to go into depression and it was a young alive. Happy dog there was no way he would do that. And also the owner was a sweetheart. Incorrect is the way data. Trainers told him to do and god so i showed him how to play games. That met the dog needs those based on these three me Wrestling and tug of war where he was engaged once he made the dog needs. He now had the right to say now. I'm busy working amid to needs not all going to spend all day with you and within couple of these. The problem was fixed because a lot of people in that situation feel like. Oh if i played along with their that's not on my terms of walking the dog around the block and when it needs to poop and pee and other stuff then just want gonna want to do that all day. That's true but you ever right. You don't ever i to tell the dog no more just the way you would tell china more if you. I have been made their needs. Do you see what i'm saying. Absolutely and they need sign any relationship. It's like i see believe me what people tell me about the relationship with each other about the intimate stuff and i'm looking and i'm like how do you expect your husband to stay with you. If you have not been with him for over a decade romantically
