And I was just like, there's the guy from the thank you note, the thank you note paid dividends and I ended up getting an offer in October of 95 to enter BA one O two in January of 1996. So from flash to bang from the time you applied until the time you got in, how long of a time frame was that? 6 months? Three, three. I'm sorry, 9 months, 9 months, because I applied in March. Well, no, march and I got basically hired in October and was in the class in January. Wow. That's still the fast. What did you have 19 years to get on? It was two years. It was a solid two years. Hey, but you forgot to tell something about when you're doing your polygraph. And you have a story form about a German Shepherd or something like that. Oh yeah, so do we want to hear this story? I don't know, dude. So during a polygraph unit, these two secrets here no secrets. "Love. That's 1999, Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke. Duncan star in this Stephen King movie, The Green Mile and Michael Clarke Duncan passed away on this day of goodness me 10 years ago. Okay, Next Question ABC series featuring Dennis Franz as detective Andy Zippo. It's This's NYPD Blue, and I believe he showed his butt in almost every single episode. That's my final answer. So with that we turn now to Robin to offer any assistance. Robin, you're free to give me guidance here, but I think were three for three. I don't want to go to aunt I didn't see it. But never after he really showed his butt a lot, right? He did. That's why I watch. Okay. Easy. Okay, let's get in the room here. Dawn's coming back. So, Robin, there's another collar. And the caller always says they had a booby. So you're not booby, huh? I want to hear sounds familiar. They don't no amount of water. What will you have a similar voice. I think to the person who always says, say hi to boobies. But in the meantime, we'll say hi to bubbles. Meanwhile, we've got Don McLean Channel two bubbles gone, All right. Okay, I'll start the think music after the first question. Okay, Here we go. What's the topic again? Colors, pop culture titles with colors in them. Okay, great. Let's do it. Okay. "I'll just have a potato and you know solid, but it was nice and the people on the show were very very like a lot of locals. Of. Super Down to Earth people and not Hollywood at all, which was kind of Nice to be there. And also I think. His, son directed me. How's that being directed by his son must be pretty goes those norris in fact. Yes. You're right about that and he was a nice guy, and it was kind of you know it just felt like to be honest with you felt like a set that I think they had been running it for years and have felt like almost like a set. Set that was board. They were just showing up for you know, let's just get through this. Didn't seem like it didn't have the same energy like, for example, with Rene when I was doing star. Trek, that he was so excited about the episode and the people were so excited. It was more like, okay. Here we go. Again. Now, we gotta do this now we gotta. GotTa do this scene and that's Kinda. How everybody was you know where's the paycheck and let's just get this done the people that were very, very nice. But it was just it felt like one of those shows that have been running for years and they just had their, you know their way, they did things and and it was just like, okay, we'll come into. Into work. We're doing this love we're going home. It didn't. They didn't make it into a big deal which was kind of Nice. So another show that you on that lot of our listeners enjoy was the exiles. You did an episode of that. Now to like a pretty that also you have to be Nancy cline in the Exit Arcadia, you remember about the X. Files. that was fun because I got to get killed. so I got to scream. So that's always fun and I just remember being in Seamy Valley, which is the middle of nowhere in cal- Los Angeles area out in the valley and for hours and hours and hours and hours because took forever to do that. It took forever. So but as far as working on it, it was really fun. Was that your first onscreen? And I think I did like. See I think I did a horror movie when I was younger that I can't remember that I think I died in that but. Yeah I. Don't. I don't know trying to think of any other onscreen doubts and I can't. Probably have to look at my resume and see, but you know, Oh, no, I did I did get killed. I did a TV movie I did a TV movie about Satanists and that was around the time I was doing the lawn Harry McGraw and it was called like ninth floor or thirty nine floors. something. It had some name like that where other team floor. Yup Nightmare on the thirteenth floor. Thank you and I got killed in that, and that was the funniest story about that was when I did the audition you know. They wanted you to audition for the with the death seeing, and so you know I've screamed and then somebody in the office. Next door said sharp. I thought that was pretty hilarious. But yeah, I got killed in that too. That was with that was nurse ratchet that show Lewis, Letcher, and lose Louis Fleischer was also kyw win on Star Trek these face night as well. Right. Right. Right. How'd you do I? said she was fantastic. She has I think she has a death where she was raised by parents or something I don't know but she's lived the Washington DC area which was really interesting for me. And so she just flew in, did the job and flew back to DC. So I thought that was interesting. Yeah, I. Think. We can't finish this interview without discussing a little bit of your NYPD blue as well. Since you were occurring character, they're younger. Stories for us. Well. I had the pleasure of working with Dennis Franz who is. Amazing and He's as Nice to you know the janitor on the set as he is to somebody is famous. He's just amazing and. I did a bunch of BOCHCO shows and. That show was done by can't remember the name of the Guy who was David Milch. And David Milch was brilliant or is brilliant. But crazy. So he would, they got the script to me, I auditioned, but then they got the script to me the final script at like I don't know eleven or twelve o'clock at night nine out of six am coal. So it was kind of nerve wracking to. Read it and think, okay four and you know just trying and you get to the set and you learn your lines and you how will these things and you're working with dentists who's great. But he's famous and everything else, and you get to the set and then David Milch runs in and says you know. Ears to do. Here's the new script and you can't you script of seven pages, will all new words? And and I was like what the Hell and data said Oh welcome to shop. Apparently, Dennis, was not nothing phased him and But I a I think Jimmy Smits couldn't take it working with milch and. So He. He. Wanted off the show but he was brilliant. He made a really brilliant character for me. He really had a lot he wanted to do with the character. He really wanted to take a long way. But what happened after I did a couple of episodes or maybe the first episode David decided to go and work on I guess whatever his next show was and Because of that, they did not know what to do with my character. So. They, had this whole plan that I was going to be the new love interest for Dennis and then they were. They were like not sure what to do, and then Dennis got really angry because they had his character have sex with me, and then want to break up with me afterwards, and he thought that was really awful and I think they just didn't know. What David had this whole idea of who I was and told me this whole long story of you know you're in. Pittsburgh and you're living with your mother and your this. This whole thing of what the character was and he laughed and that my character was David Vision and not botch goes vision. Not anybody else's. So unfortunately, I just did I think like five episodes and I probably would have been a regular had David remained on the you know remained with the show. All right. So Giuliana, let's do a little quick best, and worst here was the best experience you had set ever versus the worst experience I. Guess The muppets take. Manhattan. Is the best and the worst was a TV show that nobody knows about called It was super boy..

"Because there's so many things to choose from. I think it does start to alienate people in a way it used to be. When you watch the Emmy Awards. Everybody was watching all of those shows. And if you didn't watch it, it was by conscious choice. It wasn't because you didn't have time or you didn't have the means. It's just you weren't watching NYPD Blue. Maybe you weren't into Dennis Franz is but exact. You had that choice and you could make you decided. Nay, that But now you know, it is entirely possible that an entire category could be filled with shows you've never seen. So there has to be something Maura that gets people excited about watching this telecast. And I wonder if being inside the homes of celebrities wouldn't be enough. Get eyeballs on it. They're definitely I think will be this year. A spike in ratings because of the curiosity, if for no other reason than people just want to see what How the heck they're doing this. Yeah, I don't think that the readings are going to be boosted that much because Just don't think outside of people who are really into TV and really in the pop culture that the's kind of award shows hold. The place in the collective consciousness that they used to is just the ratings have been going down, down down, and that's a pattern that's been happening for at least a decade. But Also, What could be interesting is that Emmy nominees are encouraged to come as you are as Faras dress code. Thank you, Nirvana. Thank you, Nirvana. So that means I don't know who's going to be wearing pants. Who's not going to be working Who's gonna be wearing a sweatshirt and who's going to be wearing a gown? And here's my other quite. I mean, this is the other place where thing we will miss. And I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. We're not gonna have a red carpet in the same way either, which is part of the evening..

"The morning show Holly Robert today here with you occasionally we like to pretend that we are studio exacts and that we have the power to either agree laid around like a show according to our taste I and we're going to do just that in this moment out with some projects that Holly has made herself known of that makes sense yeah killings on meds misaligned it's mine this project Colleen has actually been in development for more than a decade but Disney is finally giving the green light to something called Bob the musical there are also Bob the musical has stars all the stars Channing Tatum all okay this thing I don't know yeah but I've never seen him saying what's the plot of Bob the musical also who came up with that creative there I can't creative Bob the musical is a story that centers on a regular guy who's worse nightmare comes to light up when he wakes up and finds that he's trapped in a musical how that's why it's called by the musical because it's supposed to be funny because Bob doesn't want to be in a musical but he finds himself in a musical this is remarkably familiar because there's a TV show with the same kind of plot totally we are in this is our Armageddon deep impact of twenty twenty money knowing that oftentimes in Hollywood there's an idea that's been bubbling around behind the scenes and then at the same time those ideas come to the surface at the same time so like back in the summer of ninety eight it was the asteroid movie deep impact and then a month later it was Armageddon both movies about giant asteroids coming to earth and the things that humanity has to do in order to save the planet yes one involved allies you would do in some stuff the other one involved Ben Affleck and animal crackers true true sorry sorry so the project the other project that you're talking about calling this actually already on the air yes this is a show that just debuted on NBC and it's called the always extraordinary play live don't really quickly is this other streaming service or is it actually on their network this is on the network because peacock NBC streaming service has launched yet gotcha so this is a regular old network TV you gotta antenna you can watch the shows always extraordinary playlists now the premise of this show Colleen let me ask you this sounds familiar to her after an unusual event Zoli starts to hear the innermost wants and desires of the people around her through songs first she questions her own sanity but soon realizes this unwanted curse may just be a an incredibly wonderful gifts now like Bob the musical so we is not a person who would necessarily enjoy the genre of musicals are so they would have you believe she's a smart computer coder forging a way through San Francisco and here she finds herself stuck in a musical yes I yeah those sold very much alike there are few few there are only a couple things that are slightly different yeah right like he's a guy she's a gal yes and also is always extraordinary playlist has a dash of what women want yes that really need to hear people's innermost thoughts right except this time it's the song and dance okay curial back to Bob this call they've had this in development for ten years yeah and some pretty big names Colleen have been attached to this project for quite some time like the director of mean girls at one point was going to be doing this movie also the people behind the lego movie's Phil lord and Chris Miller they have been attach this project one point in time so this is been floating around in Hollywood for god knows how long how long and finally Channing Tatum is gonna make Bob the musical happened so having set the table Colleen I ask you studio executive yeah and your nice spacious office jeras oh gosh it's really come across super comfortable yeah are you going to be giving Bob the musical the Green Line are you going to send it back to development hell and give it the red light okay so this might surprise you I would agree light at and I have a reason why I I think this is the kind of brain candy that the world needs right now like I think we're sick and tired of all the thoughts and opinions am thinking things at like three our city I think we're just tired of it and there's something about how the the better human who does it what like the worst nightmare of a person would be that they would get stuck in a musical and I bet there will be a happy ending I bet lake this shows that we what's it called so we so is extraordinary play list yet like that it's good to have this happy are the worst suddenly he's a softer person who sees you know life in Technicolor in a whole different way it's going to change who he is but that is the kind of be asset we it's not an unusual true because I think that there was somebody that sent us a tweet and there was a commercial that had the same exact thing where it sees people in a grocery store and then all of a sudden everyone starts to break out in like here's a kid he's wanted to live in a musical well okay so that's what your green lighting the musical because you wanted to be Colleen the musical yes so you want yeah buzz bee Berkeley as commutes the call number to help Ben how in the middle of nowhere meaning we've got legs for days and you guys are all making weird geometrical shapes with their bodies yes so the fans I do think you know there it because sometimes it is done horribly wrong like do you remember the TV show cop rock you don't Holly remember okay given I finally was a pop rock was the worst ever and I think the world just wasn't ready for it yet we weren't quite to the place where we really needed a music well because people couldn't understand what was happening also cop rock come came from the mind of Steven Bochco who did it hill street blues yeah and who went on to do NYPD Blue Dennis Franz's make it but yeah so where does copper online all that I do have to laugh though because I think part of the deal with cop rock for me it was like really like that's a lot to throw at us all at once it's one I bought the musical by all means looks like it's just going to be a one off movie a sort of has a good Truman show ask quality to it the sense of like a I don't know a person who is living in a world that is read it in a different way than the world the rest of us live in yeah good movie I love the Germans thing so bought the musicals is going to be a movie the is always extraordinary playlist whenever these high concept TV shows come out of the gate kinda like a cop rock did you ask him the eighties like this how long can the show sustained rate itself right because that's always the issue where it's super high concept it's really fun but then you find yourself episode twelve season three and how are we going to move forward from that my hope always is that they actually know where they're going with it like what the end result is which this is not a high concept show by any means but poops creek which I love that show and it's not actually called goose creek well I just can't say the word but that show has always had an idea of where it's going that's very clear like they had a trajectory of the story that they wanted to tell how long it would take them to get there but the I think they also made the decision to stop the show but they look like and I look at a show like is always extraordinary play listen I think did they just throw spaghetti at the wall and hope it stock or do they and we don't know do they have an idea of the trajectory all the other place or the other one I think about like this is the good place yes when they first started the good place you thought it was one thing that show has gone on a jury right right but I wonder if that was all part of the plot or if it's just if they just had a really good writers who thought okay now let's take in this direction right you see what I'm saying we hope that we're in trusted hands that's all I'm saying that thank you for the musical yes thank you for the musical by the way spell so we're given and I will give Bob the musical the green light as well okay I think that it will be nice fluffy fun thing to watch with Channing Tatum possibly not wearing a certain speaking of Channing Tatum by the way did you see the news Colleen that he's back with Jessie J. idea for that song that to me is very telling it's.

"Welcome back to the news desk here. We're due to pick up where we left off here. More matchup smash. We've moved on to the whole take the blur I have spoken. TRAMPS does a damn good not doc nolte okay. There's GonNa be a a doozy lieutenant data verses. This is the Zina more of Queen from aliens. The fuck on the Enterprise d no prep time. Wait did he just get dropped down east around by eggs. What's happening? It is is it just him or are there other people on the ship. He beamed aboard nobody aboard. There's alien eggs and there's the fucking alien queen new drones more Tanzi to Morph. Because you never see her coming. has she already transmogrify. I'd like the the it's fucking Jesus. She already tear formed parts of the enterprise where she can hide into it. They were all this the data. But I'M GONNA already saying that's what the aliens do. They like they turn whatever not tear for. Well whatever the fuck they do to camouflage themselves they take over areas and then slowly makes it grow on the wall. Yeah Yeah is enterprise slammed. It's getting there. Yes okay I think without prep. I think one of the two is a much better position to take that. W is this like cage match basically. It's like an. He's not face to face with the Queen he beams board. He sees the stuff he figures out something going on and inserts investigating yes is not correctable then data ones you think so because he can close off decks and the force fields shit and he's what he's third in command behind card and record he's get that bitch fucking holiday back. uh-huh smell episode. That's just my game. That's a good crossover. Anyway I WANNA say. The data wins unless if Ripley can win hopping in a forklift Dato with enterprise and phaser and like try quarter and beaming. My thing is ripley has all of her her fodder crew members that die before so you let her know what works. What doesn't how she can get away? If data is the only one there and he just has to like boom bydesign queen. She attached to her exact. Does she have to does she have to deploy you know every time you see the queen. She's like hooked up and she's just like turn them out to dinner. Queen thing got duties uh-huh duty than those things start hatching face hugger hops on data. And now we're GONNA do shit. That's true although he wouldn't be able to remove it without harming himself acid and shit. It's tricky these are the things that perplexes face hungers can't face re Betas okay. I'm sorry I was asked a question. I'm very interested in Taylor. Your thoughts like I was saying date is not gonNA make it. But that's just me with his skin off from the acid. Yes okay question. It did burn through ship so true. That's that's very true instead. Just like data okay. Thor versus Magneto. Agnew Thor no prep time. MAGNETO has prep time magneto. Makita with other Travis's like thors I hammer is made out of metal. So could magneto wielded. No he could wield or lifted but with the power of magnetism. Yes he could like manipulate it. Magnet it to the ground is interesting. Would he be vulnerable to its electricity. Actually we know because storm often tries to fuck them up with like trinity and it's just a different deflects. The magnetic field is he in and depends on which magneto you're talking about but if it straight up comic book Magneto he can. You know deflect absorb that magneto. It was a team beater fights the entire team of x men and social morays. Also a team leader true true that the character My favorite member the new mutants. Yeah Magni is GONNA win. How many times out of ten eight say six to seven and then matchup happened? Sure I mean it's the same universe I could apnea probably hasn't the ultimate universe. Maybe probably hasn't we're just talking out of our asses someone's quick to Wins Okay we got John MacLean versus Jason Bourne Airport at Christmas. It's snowing nope Nope Dropping both in their one has to make weight. Jason Statham the actor Jason Bourne. Jason born Fleck Jason Statham is just kind of a British. I get say. Kill John Maclean. I it's GonNa be Jason Bourne. I WANNA say McLean. Just 'cause he's hungover gritty probably beater. He has Christmas magic button. And yes it is at Christmas so think about that. He gets a bonus for fighting the Christmas for. I guess you're not going to be a lot of like car chases. Why could be on the on the tarmac? They'RE GONNA end up on the wing of a plane you know they are. That's going to happen somebody's GonNa get impaled on one of the It's in an airport right. Which means no weapons unless it's like the Nineteen Ninety airport in which case John Maclean has gone on at all times still off Dennis Franz? It's true Damn Damn Andy. SIPOWICZ NYPD blue. Yep He's got beautiful Budgie so so we think that I think born takes. Yeah born born happy about it. Yeah Yeah how. Many Times ten eight. I wish we say yeah. mcleans going to have some puts clever scenes born to talk very much. Who's going to win? One liner Oh. Ask Dan that's how he gets to. That's the only way. Yes he says one. That's good enough that Jason Bourne is like. Yeah I think that works a lot for him he kind of reverse monologues bag is good yeah That's really spiderman. Does I mean Klay less F word level but that's Spiderman. Just trolls his enemies. That are stronger than him to get pissed off. Yeah he just aggravates them until they charge and then he just takes out that way. That's Gary Cooper asshole so we've got one more down there. It was Tom and Jerry Verse Itchy and scratchy do with prep time. Well I mean it's really begins and ends because it's going to be itchy and scratchy. Because they use uber fighting but with prep I mean they mostly just pulled his weapons out of their ass Tom and Jerry with prep pull some loony tune ship. They can pull some looney tunes and okay. Here's the thing I will say. Oh they're looney there. Violence does not cause lasting damage. Their violence makes a big Mike Foot long on top of your head. The violence itchy and scratchy deal allow. Yeah Yeah So. You're saying that itchy and scratchy become a team. They've teamed up together so there could be some disagreements in that fight they can create like turmoil would just with between the group. Think Tom and Jerry are more likely to Kim. Up and strategize and figure out because I have a feeling itchy and scratchy. Just get bigger each other. Yeah show here front. Yeah Yeah I kind agree with that. They're they're the uneasy alliance. I feel like both shows you kind of see them do a little team up sometime. They for the greater good. They'll team. Yeah Yeah I forget. Why scratchy Dubai? No Tom and Jerry was because of the dog in the backyard. Right now the bulldog no the bulldog liked Jerry. Okay sometimes jury was the mouse. Okay all right coming into this debate. Not even knowing what the mouse made this job chop knew it was one of the other fifty embarrassed to be here now. God md.. Gillis whose Thanos planos he. He's the guy that He he sells sandwiches. "dennis franz" Discussed on WGN Radio
"Were maybe thirteen ten independent movies yeah that's all yeah another four thousand submissions to to Sundance right right it's a big it's a different world now. so so would lead anyway that was a calling card it it it it opened it's a wood cedar played at the Threepenny maybe the Biograph played in Hyde Park Place different places and the tragedy was that black instead of going into white neighborhoods to see it and then the fear of the racial fear at the time was to work with but we don't want this to happen from the theater owners yeah so they pulled the movie and the distributor renamed the movie main main man from stony island check this out as a blaxploitation movie wasn't yeah anyway so we got great reviews and that everybody did that's fine by yeah Dennis Franz as first movie you know and and simply when I'm in and it was a calling card for a lot of people and and it's interesting because we did a making of a few years ago with Quincy Jones and a few other people who have connections to stony island and see what's happened to Susie hops in the Bengals was the richest girlfriend yeah story yeah. wow it's it yeah it's amazing I agree to a snapshot of that period of time to really you know one of the things I love about about your movies is that your you know how to use this city and I mean that in the kindest way possible because I can't tell you the number of movies that are shot here in Chicago by people who really don't know the city and I don't know how many shots of Buckingham fountain we gotta get or you know the shots of going southbound on lake shore drive does that those are the things that you expect but you use great neighborhoods and and really great locations I particularly love the use of of of our city in the in code of silence those are some of my favorite uses of of of Chicago how you go about picking where you're gonna shoot. well I don't know it is it was like a you know you people live in apartments a hipster ways in the back if you can arrive at how you can get in and get out do you buy the L. you know I used to boost their ideals and sixty thirds Tony and I lived originally on one threat to the elders of fabric of my whole life in its second album ever my movies the Chicago L. scenes in traffic yeah so so you know it it it just became natural for me to do that stuff yeah yeah and it's but it looks but you really do captured to date the city differently than than pretty much anybody else and I do want to mention really quick they have I ever told you the experience of me seeing under siege for the first time. no okay let me tell you the story and for some reason Gary Busey was in town he was filming a movie called about the rookie of the year with a kid broke his arm using any any control real fast so they became a pitcher for the cubs. Gerry was in that movie I met him at a bar one night and ended up hanging out with them for about six days straight well which was insane and I saw under seal your drinking days. yes actually Andrea but I said this is the with this is the is the manner in which I saw under siege I hung out with them for a few days I told that Warner brothers for screening at the esquire right down the street from where he was staying staying at the Westin across from that yeah and and he's like we think I can get in and I'm like yeah I think you can you're in the movie. I'm pretty sure you can get in and you can see he hadn't seen it no he didn't see either and he in those like he's like I'll go with you when I'm like okay you can come with me so I saw under siege with Gary Busey sitting next to me basically basically doing DVD commentary running throughout the entire movie it was unbelievable. were there other people in the screening room yeah it was at the esquire theater was packed. I see I yes it wasn't like everybody in just a few people because like leaning over me gonna you know time in a timely and I we got you provides this whole scene you know you're doing stuff like that during the. to. noted on the spot yeah I know he he was it was interesting because no I gave him the book of the the the ship's book with all the history and all that stuff yeah and he's looking to any signs of these guys just like girls. right. I do this is cooler you know Kerry with little or get out to the studio because Hutchison but you got to shoot this both ways here what I care about the. we did shoot it both ways but anyway but if they were right away was a huge hit for that scene you know yeah yeah I know I was really was a pretty pretty being incredible experience in next so mia and yes during the drag things like this as a business I want to do this I want to put the dress on you know he would tell me the whole thing while it was happening in real time it was pretty amazing so all right if you hang out okay okay okay into Davis is with us he's a terrific filmmaker and we come back we're gonna talk about the fugitive it is a twenty five twenty five years old fugitives twenty five years old I can't believe that and we're gonna it there's a screening of the entries going to be I'll be there in live in person it's this Friday the twenty third at the music box theatre and it starts at seven o'clock we'll come back more with with indeed it was right after this. welcome back everybody knew to Julia here on seven twenty WGN and were live in the skyline studio here on seven twenty to legion here till five AM on your overnight due till five here every weekday mornings to take two for.
