"And especially if somebody like that is also a major figure in the back, I mean, out of the backfield in the receiving core. He's been hit too many times. Yeah, and that's the thing. Not only will he stay healthy, but is even that good anymore. I don't like Matt rule has been extremely unimpressive. As an offensive coach, I got his deal. I don't think Mayfield was awful. But he's somebody who's going to be about as good as his surrounding talent and coaching and that I do not see that there at all. Yeah. And the falcons are also going to be interesting to watch Mariota, but obviously they're going to be dreadful. I think the falcons done a good job of drafting. You know, I think they are putting together young talent, but you know, they're not even close. There were 7 and 9, but they had the point. What was their Pythagorean lot? Like they just said, let me see. FBI projects them at 6.3 in projects the panzers at 7 wins. So yeah. That's the thing about a weak division. A weak division, you can win 6 games in, even if you're not very good. Right. Yeah, so last year there were 7 to ten, but we're outscored by a 140 points. Yeah. Just even by just basic, even if they're a little better this year, they're still more likely to win like 5 or 6. To the extent that they have like a vague respectable records just because it's a weak division. But so, you know, the bucket is still a lot like Brady. I mean, if you say I mean, it's not like, you know, Brady's game depends on making lots along throws. Like, you know, he's not, you know, and I think Bowles is likely to be a good head coach. I mean, if you look back on it, it really is tenure with the jets given the talent doesn't even look that bad. You know, I would hope that Arians could convince her to be a little more aggressive in terms of his play calling. But I think, you know, he did an excellent job as a defensive coordinator again. I think he'll be fine. And so I think I would expect the Buccaneers to win the division again. The problem with Brady is that simply we just have no, there are no comps. We can only generally say that older quarterbacks have these sorts of tendencies. But Brady has already blown all of those comparisons out of the window, right? And so yeah, it's just very difficult to project to project what even a serious decline in Brady looks like. But having to project it, you would project it would be not good. Right. I mean, that, yeah. But this division is so bad, even if he did have a serious decline. And it was merely the 20th or 22nd best quarterback in the NFL. They still might win the division. Scott and I well know, like Dan Marino made the playoffs in his last year, right? Not only made the playoffs, he won a playoff game in Seattle. In the kingdom. So was Dennis Erickson coaching the CX, who was the I don't remember. I remember, yeah, when TMZ recite bonds, I remember Bill James on narco, he went through like basically sort of every superstar comparable bonds.

"The evolution and where Washington state fits in the conversation piece now when we're talking about the ten remaining teams in this conference. Well, when you take a step back, I mean, nothing's really changed for Washington state. We've always been a program that isn't as resources of other schools. So we've always, we've always had to be a little bit different and really be more dialed in on who we bring in here and coach as coaches and the staff they built up. And that's a recipe that will probably have to be a part of Washington state's DNA till the end of time. With that being said, there have been transformative changes in college athletics just with one just the continued amount of money that gets poured into our system through these TV contracts on top of that, we deregulated transfers last year for football on top of that. We have this on regulated name image and likeness environment and we still operate out of the historical model where we're we need to figure out ways to put more in our student athletes pockets and without sacrificing the educational experience because at the end of the day it's still the most important piece of the entire experience and it's the one thing that really remains undebatable is the best pathway to changing your socioeconomic status to raise your sight lines on what a future could look like is still through education specifically college education. So our system is in a period of dynamic change with USC and UCLA did. I guess a month and a half ago is just a byproduct of where of where this thing unfortunately is headed and how TV is impacting a lot of decisions a lot of short term decisions relative to what history and tradition and what those two schools have met in the PAC ten impact 12, but this were at any era that we've ever had in college athletics has been coming down to us to try to take what we have and try to make the most out of it. And where we sit today, I'm comfortable with the commitment of our 9 other schools in the PAC ten or PAC 12. And our willingness to stay together and move forward and you don't know what you don't know, but all of our conversations have been forward thinking and I think everybody here on the West Coast knows what that stake and how important it is for us to stay together as a conference. That conversation, right? A lot of you sat in those meetings over the last year with UCLA and USC where you had Martin darman and Mike bohn and I assume president Schultz and those presidents, president meetings and stuff like that. And what was said to their face wasn't necessarily what was going on behind the scenes. What gives you a confidence that what you're experiencing together right now, the ten of you makes you feel like that's a more solid foundation than clearly it was just over a month and a half ago. I would just say the level of candor in all of our meetings and the types of questions that are being asked, I mean, everybody understands what's at stake. Everybody understands I've said this multiple times. Our biggest threat is the multiple conferences, our biggest threat is one conference, making a decision if they want to expand more into the West Coast and that's the conference of my Alma mater. So we recognize that. So I would just, I guess, the comfort comes in. These meetings have been intense. They've been highly communicative. But the fact that there has been pander in all of our meetings is where everybody's asking the right questions and the fact that we're all asking the right questions, it gives you a little bit of comfort that everyone is trying to work together to move forward. Have you had, have you had many calls or interactions with alumni of Washington state university kind of panicking because of all this or has there been I've tried to come from an optimistic side of this, regardless of what anything looks like, whatever the landscape looks like, the tradition in history of Washington state football is never going to go away. It's always going to be there. Football is going to be played there. It's going to be played at a very high level and be very competitive. I think there's some fear from people that, for some reason, Washington state football in this new look of what college football could be no longer exists. And that's the furthest thing from the truth. Well, I think there's two things one, we have a president who actually was over a decade ago, the president Kansas state and sat through kind of the same quicksand with the big 12 and they were able to survive. So Juan, just having a president, I say this in all seriousness, I think Kurt's done more to call me down than vice versa with all just with just how just how uncertain the environment is and was, I guess, especially at the beginning parts of July. I think the nice outcome of all this is all the athletic you can go right down the list, all these sports writers that cover college football as they try to follow the data on why behind all these decisions, which is basically TV ratings. Lo and behold, Washington state actually turns on TV sets. And I think that's been the most comforting thing that that is that has been very, very public, especially in recent weeks that just from a value standpoint, what Washington state brings to the table and what the 9 other schools and the pack 12 bring to the table is the reason why the ten schools have to need to stay together and want to stay together. But our stories a little bit unique and when you try to do the math on why does little old Washington state turn on TV sets, you know, you could date it back to the guy who designed our logo because it's our belief. It's one of the most recognizable logos in all of college athletics and you just build up from Jack Thompson, Dennis Erickson, Mike price.

"Pretty crazy to see how that's unfolded. And just some of the quotes that you see out of the team, they don't necessarily knew they were going to be here. This is a little bit of a shock to them that they're 7 and four. We did see a motivated beaver's defense shut down a very similar offense last week in Arizona state. Big mulling offensive line, a better back than what's on Oregon's roster and Rashad white. You have a mobile quarterback and Jayden Daniels as well. As soon organs offense are kind of similar in makeup, right? And defending that style hasn't been to beaver strength defensively. Even with last week's effort against Arizona state, you look at the beaver's defense still outside the top 80 in line yard stuff rate and opportunity rate. So they have struggled defending the run overall, but it was better last week. So it's good to see that you can defend that style. It should help them prep for this game, but let's see what the beaver's defense can do. The ducks, you mentioned, play a defense that is the complete opposite. They were mold in the 20s against Utah. Their front 7 was just absolutely dominated. I'm looking at the numbers right now. Utah is a positive 0.42 EPA per rush over 3.7 line yards. Organ didn't create havoc with their front 7. Utah is really smart. And I went back and watched this game because I just wasn't going to watch it in the moment. I decided to get out a little bit. But every single run it felt like was away from kayvon thibodeaux. And that was really smart by winning him. Let's see if Smith kind of follows that up this week. And if you listen to Mario Cristobal and Tim de rooter this week and their pressors, you kind of kept getting clueless questions from media members asking like, why is organs defense so bad on third downs? Why couldn't they get off the field on third down and multiple times both coaches were like, Utah just lived in short yard situations on third down. That's something we have been talking about forever, right? Third downs are fluky. Third downs have a ton of variance early downs are far more predictive. And Oregon states offensive line is number one in the country in line yards. 5th an opportunity rate. Third and stuff right aloud. And that's kind of been the unsung hero to this team. And all signs point to Oregon being bullied in the trenches yet again this week. And aside from the run games and the offensive lines being kind of the core makeup of both offenses, why I'm kind of focusing on this is to play physical brand of football. You've got to want to be there. You've got to want to play that style mentally. This is Oregon state Super Bowl. They're playing with house money at this point. I understand it's a rivalry game, and you'd hope organ gets up for it as well. But a week ago, the ducks controlled their own destiny and were focused on the college football playoff birth and a run at the national championship. Now you're back at home playing little brother in the driveway. Possibly a feeling of a team beneath you. And at the same time, Mario Cristobal and his people are picking up their phones any time they see three O 5 or three 5 two on the area code, right? That's what's going on here. I don't know if he's going to make that move to Miami or Florida. We'll see what unfolds. Let's just see if a PAC 12 championship in a rose bowl or enough to get the ducks to care here. Yeah, it may be a tough selling point knowing that Oregon found a way to back into the conference championship last year when Washington had a COVID situation. They end up drumming USC. They go to a bowl game and get drum themselves by Iowa state. So we'll see if the rose bowl is enough of an allure to get in there. And like you say, buckle down, try and handle some of the physicality and the trenches. We know stopping BJ Baylor won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination. One injury to keep tabs on for Oregon state defensively, they could be down the services of Avery Roberts, the team's leading tackler had an ankle injury, but the one thing Kyrie Fisher stepped in and performed admirably in his absence didn't seem to be a major concern for Oregon state, but you would like all hands on deck in a game of this magnitude when you go up against your end state rival. All right. What is this line? Where's this line go? I mean, I honestly think there's going to be too much public money that comes in on Oregon that I think this number you're going to get a 7 and a half where FanDuel is right now and I think it probably sits there. That makes sense. We would have made it organ -7 and a half on a neutral last week. And it's now 7 at home after adjustments in the opposite direction for both teams. In general, I like where the beavers are heading. It's just a really well coach team. I like Jonathan Smith. He really should be in consideration for the Washington job. Let's see how that unfolds. He said all the right things about wanting to build the beavers up, but at the same time, he's the lowest paid power 5 coach in football. And the guy that is kind of being rumored to Washington because there is some internal issues at auburn. Is Brian? But there is some interesting aspects with Brian and we know that there was a coach fired at Washington state. The program didn't want to let him go. It was a state thing, and so that is the hurdle for all of the Brian harsh and talk to Washington. Yeah, Jonathan Smith story is going to be real interesting because obviously he has loyalty to his Alma mater. The Dennis Erickson led. I think it was a fiesta or orange bowl championship team was honored last week and their win against Arizona state. It'll be curious to see if boosters can pony up enough to keep him there because like you said, Jonathan Smith was the offensive mastermind for Chris Peterson for a lot of those years in Seattle. So it ties to that program as well. And from what I've been told, Chris Peterson still has quite a bit of say in terms of what Washington will do in the direction it'll go to name a successor to Jimmy Lake at this point, despite how poorly that last experience went for a season plus, one that I think both you and I saw coming a mile away. A little bit surprising that the program didn't see it in such a fashion. So something to watch, especially knowing that Washington has a quarterback of the future in mister hewer there poised to take over and really put this program right where they need to be in Seattle. But from one in state rivalry to another. This time to bedlam with an awful lot at stake and still water and who knows how much longer these two in state programs will play one another. If you read Mike Gundy's comments this week, he says, you know, I'm not sure the economics of college football will allow us to continue playing annually when Oklahoma makes the move to the SEC. I don't think that's a veiled shot off the bow. I think it's just a understanding of reality in the world we live in now. Oklahoma state, a four and a half point favorite as they'll welcome in big brother in the Oklahoma sooners. Total in this game, 49 and a half at fan to a sports book. And when you look at this series, I think those folks new to college football, well, this is pretty competitive. If you look at the historical sample size, Oklahoma state is beaten Oklahoma 18 times in the previous 115 meetings. Oklahoma state hasn't won against OU since 2014, but it would be the second straight year OSU enters as the higher ranked team in the matchup. The winner historically has needed to score 30 points. That's been the magic threshold in each of the last 11 meetings to lay out some of the championship scenarios. Oklahoma state, they've already punched their ticket to the big 12 championship, Oklahoma needs a win or a Baylor loss to secure a title game rematch against OSU. When you look at the cowboys, this team has rattled off 9 straight covers since early in the year when they were trying to figure out their identity. And you have to.

"And that's what people would tell you around. The esi program is like you know what they're getting some guys in still none of them develop they just. Don't get better. The draft numbers when carol was there for nine years and years after that. It's just not even close. It doesn't stand up especially the top and draft picks so sc. Let's face it. It's it's california it's the pac twelve. The pac twelve never going to be a priority nationally. The way the sec is for some of the other top programs. Like how state clemson you know look. Oregon has put together quite a recruiting class over the years but sc was. I mean they were every year. You're like okay well this. This is a team that i have to just factor into the national championship conversation and now we were like maybe they can win. The twelve and the start of the season or early pass Their head coach and and we know what to make of him. Even the with jackson darn play. Let's take a look at miami i don't know when if that's ever going to turn around But we'll get that a little bit at their peak and their peak last a really long time and you can go from schnellenberger jimmy johnson. Dennis erickson butch davis larry coker. They were ranked number one at one point ten times in twenty years thorne a couple national championships and now post coker. Four coaches later randy shannon al golden mark richt and now manny diaz and still early the best finish. They've had post coker is thirteen right. So you touched number one. Ten times in twenty years and since coker now over a decade the best finish thirteenth in the a people. Let's take a look at texas They're on coach number three after mack. Brown machias it was two thousand thirteen. He went eight and five. Mack brown's eight and five record in the year where everybody was sick of them down there remember. It was eating. Get johnny manziel. They're not putting a look. They were doing a bad job getting guys drafted but the menzel stuff went on and on and on and poor mac like when he started working with him he didn't i wouldn't say mac round. Hey johnny manziel just any time. It was ever brought up. He's like look. I get it. We didn't get johnny manziel The guy won national championship and turn texas around and by the end of it he was old and you would also say something else. I think he's only like a couple years older than sabin but the reception was that mack was like ready for a nursing. Home and saving was.

"Welcome to the best of the colin coward. Podcast some great guests this week. We're giving you all the highlights. But i might take of the week. That was i think. Us should go get an nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche of the next decade and these. Nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. Nagy if the if the bears fired him anthony lynn. All one playoff games in the nfl. All have a presence If you go. Look at usc miami and ucla three urban universities. If you look at the coaches that had the most success p carroll john robinson. Usc pro coaches chip kelly. Pro coach is getting it rolling dick for meal. Ucla pro coach about miami last time. They want butch davis dennis. Erickson jimmy johnson. When you get to these big distracted cities you need a big presence to cut through. I always said this about georgetown basketball. When i was at its best i remember kirk. Herbstreet saying to me. He goes when i go to. Usc games it's not it's college but not just college. It feels like somewhere between the nfl and college. And that's what the miami hurricanes felt like. And that's where the georgetown hoyas felt like with ewing and iverson And david wingate reggie williams alonzo mourning. Georgetown in dc. It was a college basketball program but it had the attitude and the intimidation and personality of a protein. So did usc with pete carroll sorted miami would jimmy johnson and dennis erickson. This is not rural. America these are distracted markets. There's pro sports everywhere. You gotta cut. Through and i just think in los angeles right now every college football reporter has the same names. James franklin's not getting his job he's making eight and a half million a year at penn state he would have to buy them out for four million. So that's four million in a buyout. He would want at least ten to twelve million to coach. Usc to make the money right. 'cause la expensive. His staff would be eight to ten million. Usc is not going to be twenty five million dollars for a coach. They're not going to write that check. They're also in los angeles. Not bill at somebody walking and control. The program doesn't work that way. This is not ames iowa. You know these. This is not a small town where you know nick. Sabin can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. That's fine in alabama. You know that that's not gonna work here. And so i think there are these very unique college cities miami los angeles where you have to attack it differently and i d c would georgetown. You got to attack it differently. And i hope. Usc thinks big got. If i have to see. Chris peterson ain't taking the job doesn't want told me that bob stoops has been offered three or four jobs. He's not doing it james franklin. Usc is not going to let a guy come in and just control the athletic department. He's a control guy. Most of these guys they have to. They have to have the secretary a they have to have the budgets. that's just not what. Usc is gonna do also right now if i was a college coach i'd use usc to get a raise at my school. I mean the pac twelve television contract right. Now is a mass. It's a mess. Us's highly political. It's not a perfect job. It's not nineteen ninety s. not. Pete carroll's la when you had no nfl in town you have to win and you have to win a certain way and frankly the demands are intense. And the minute you lose a game. People are uninterested you know get the guaranteed ninety. Two thousand homefield advantage snot. The whale works in la people have other things to do. I've always said this whenever you have a beach. Miami and la. It's like adding another protein. It's just another option. That's fun that people can go to. What else are you gonna do an auburn alabama tallahassee florida gainesville florida. I mean what else you're going to do. Ninety percent of college football powers are in the middle of nowhere. The only game in town. Usc the minute you going to two game losing streak your revenue drop shoe the floor to see the coliseum saturday. There was nobody in third quarter. Nobody in it. So you gotta you gotta cut through. You've got to get a big personality. You gotta get an nfl guy. Go big god. College football was so much. Bigger years ago. Miami peak carol lou whole it feels so insular now i mean we. We basically know who's playing in the national championship final four. Now right the teams down. I think i think. Usc needs to lead the way california's the fifth biggest economy in the world. It leads the way for our country in tech innovation in agriculture. One of the top manufacturing states in aerospace. Why can't we lead it in college. Sports football teams have never been refined in september. Andy reid sean. Mcvay matt nagy offensive coaches. They spend off season. Scheming new plays. So i do think offensive coaches have an advantage over. Defensive coaches in september defenses are rarely in great form early. There's longtime baseball saying an opening day pitchers are ahead of hitters. The belief is that hitters perform worse at the beginning of the season. Therefore pitchers perform better at the beginning of the season last week. The biggest numbers were put up by the saints. Sean payton cardinals cliff kings. Mary eagles nick. Sorry onny niners kyle. Shanahan rams sean mcveigh. September is for offensive coaches. Consider that when gambling. He's not high profile. I cam newton. He doesn't have endorsements but it's remarkable to me how we always forget about nick foles. Who outduel tom brady super bowl. Who has a career record over five hundred in fact with philadelphia when he had decent offensive line protection and smart offensive coach. He was twenty one and eleven and passer rating above ninety three. He's played in six playoff games. He's won four eleven. Td's five picks and a ninety nine passer.

It leads the way for our country in tech innovation in agriculture. One of the manufacturing states in aerospace. Why can't we lead it in college sports. He's starting his thirteenth year on. Nbc's football night in america. It's been a great privilege to know tony. Dungy one of the most ethical decent guys i've ever known and I just love chattanooga. He's really smart. Tony i talked to peyton manning. Recently he was so funny. I said You know when when there was a view that you ran the offense and tony ran the defense and And he was the head coach and i said You know to did you did you and tony you know. Tell me the first time you. Tony locked horns and he told the funny story he goes he came to me. He said payton. Stop throwing interceptions right now. I don't know but outta by put it exactly that way. But we did have a discussing. And i said hey payden. We are an explosive offense. We're gonna continue to be explosive but we've got the take care of the football. We take care of the football. We're going to be a championship team. And he didn't understand that totally he didn't grasp and it came slowly but surely and two thousand two was not first year. They're kind bought into a little bit. Two thousand three two thousand four. He goes forty nine touchdowns ten That's when it clicked and that's when we became a team you had to be reckoned with you know it is interesting because tony. I'm i like guys You know tom brady. He'll throw picks ally manning big ban brett farve. What is the line. Tony where you don't want to dissuade attack lamar jackson. I want him to run. He may fumble occasionally. What's the line for you as a coach what you'll tolerate and world drive you. Nuts the line is you can't turn the ball over you. Had you've got to take care of the football. And that's what you've got to get across the perceptions are going to happen. Fumbles are going to happen. But everybody's gotta take that that when it does happen it's not a it's okay and yet we took some shots and so we lost ball here. It's no big deal. It is a big deal. And when you get to that point and it's important that's when you're going to be good. And all of the great quarterbacks have that a sean mcvay a few years ago. Refuse to play starters in preseason and they went eight notice start at at you know the. Nfl's a little bit of a copycat league and a lot of these young coaches. Now they just won't play starters now arians will tomlin. Will bella check will all school guy strike now. Bill polian told me once tony. He felt you needed three weeks of hitting intense hitting.

Last time they won. Butch davis dennis. Erickson jimmy johnson.

"About. So i'm glad that we're all right. Congrat- derek carr. I will support lamar jackson in a little bit. Usc fired their coach yesterday. Nice guy didn't get it. Done no reason to stomp on him. Wonderful family man. Good luck to klay hilton. I love college football. And you know that and i especially love. Usc college football though has warned me out in recent years. I talk much less about it today than i ever have because college. Football is in a perpetual cycle of thinking. Small looking down. I'm not into that. I read every single college football reporter yesterday and it was all the same names up for the usc job. Just a bunch of nice college guys. They they coach in towns like ames iowa in rural pennsylvania. It's la last time this program mattered. They had an nfl coach. pete carroll. they didn't matter before then until they had an nfl guy. John robinson when's the last time. Ucla matter dick for meal was at their best their winning again with chip kelly nfl coaches. When's the last time miami mattered. Butch davis stopped bringing guys from temple to your program. There's three urban universities in america with powerful college. Football programs. Miami usc and ucla. And if you look the most guys that have cut through. Its butch davis jimmy johnson. Dennis erickson nfl guys usc john robinson pete carroll and by the way sar who's coach in the nfl and get a job in the nfl again. I think at the coordinator level. He was successful before he had personal issues. Ucla dick for meal now. Chip kelly's got him rolling. They get the big city. They're not small town guys. They get the big picture. College football now has a name image. Likeness reality it is an avalanche in. It's going a million miles downhill and you'll listen to all these college coaches. They're all freaking out about an i l. My players are going to make money. Nfl guys coach millionaires. That's the future of this sport. I would get on the phone to. Doug peterson to anthony. Lynn to matt nagy. Nfl coaches. Doug peterson super bowl with nick. Foles matinee playoffs twice with mitch. Trubisky anthony lynn when a playoff game with one hundred and nine year old philip rivers and a battle line. They've got a presence there. Not control freaks like all these college coaches that don't freak out with name image likeness. They don't need control because they have owners in the nfl nfl coach. Belichick trade garoppolo but trade garoppolo. That's what bill did andy. Reid has no control sean. Payton have any control. Pete carroll has some probably not as much as he like college. I see all these names. They're all fine coaches lincoln riley. And the how. Would you leave. Oklahoma for usc and their political nonsense james franklin. He's a college coach. He wants control. He makes eight million dollars a year in rural pennsylvania. What it what would you have to make in los angeles fifteen million. That's just for him. His staff and other ten million he wants control l. As donna town you can control every single team in this city that has gone big has been rewarded. The lakers went big with lebron ad. The rams went big with stafford. And sean mcveigh took a dice roll. They went and got justin. Herbert the chargers went big chip. Kelly spent a lot of money on chip kelly. Even though he just come from an nfl situation that was tire fire. It's now working. Usc went big with pete carroll. They went big with monkey bets. This is not ames iowa. it's not knoxville. We don't wanna control freaks because nobody controls la the biggest stars in l. a. r. bums after a movie bombs. If you're looking for control live in the sticks that's done with this city's about and it's not what college football ever is going to grow is about nothing against all these college coaches. They're wonderful guys. They win but college. Coaches need control. That's why they're all freaking out with an i l. They're all freaking out. Things going off the rails. I gotta pay players. Doug peterson won a super bowl with nick. Foles over brady. He's on the beach. Column and pam. Anthony lynn nagy. They're good lookin' they've got a presence. They don't need control. They've dealt with owners they've dealt with millionaires could college football once in my life. Go big and not rural nothing against norman oklahoma now that against auburn alabama college about small towns. Miami has been trying for years to win. Let's go get the temple guy. Let's go get enough miami. Get on the phone call. Doug peterson super bowl. Nick foles come on look at. Usc look at ucla. Look at miami. These are what miami and us. I've said this many times before college. Football mrs usc in miami. I've said this one hundred times. When miami and usc were at the top of this sport it felt big when usc played texas. It got twenty two and a half rating that's an nfl playoff rating. Now it gets fifteen's it feels insular and small plus if you go to college guy you gotta deal with his agent and you'll screw up his recruiting class and he'll deny it got kid at of that mass if college football in usc are going to grow for the love. A you know what. Go big the sport by the way. The nfl is now borrowing college stuff. College should go to the nfl and borrow nfl stuff. If you look at usc ucla in miami seven of their eight most successful coaches nfl guys that saw the world beyond controlling the media controlling the athletic department and controlling the athlete bra. Those days are over. Athletes have control and in los angeles. It is a distracted city. We got to. Nfl teams and star quarterback we got to nba teams. Four or five star player. The dodgers have eight all stars years ago. I mean just to give you a sense of what's happened in los angeles because silicon when pete carroll was here. Silicon valley wasn't as big as it was. People are so distracted. Miami and la have beaches. That's like another protein. It's not about winning in los angeles. You have to cut through in los angeles. It's not about winning in miami. You gotta cut through in miami too many things to do aqua water nhl nba baseball. Go up to fort lauderdale for the week. You've got waves. It's eighty two degrees. grabbed a surfboard. Same in los angeles. But but i look at all this stuff right now if you want to get the right coat every single reporter that covers college football the same twelve names. You know what's going to happen. Ninety percent of those guys are going to turn you down or use to get a raise. That's what's happened with usc. In miami for years schools and coaches use you an agent. Use you to get a race. Get out of that space. Go big go pro. Please make the sport field big again. There's my rant. All right i'm fine. I lose my way a little bit. Sometimes when.

"I am Gonna lose myself a little this morning because When i get frustrated i get a little preachy. And i'm gonna get a little preachy with. Us looking for a football coach. Five minutes knocking to lead with it. I wanna lead with that s show. I watched last night on television. If the movie hangover was a game that was last night. That's a that's a good line. Yes i've lived the hangover in vegas. Many times was gay one game lost. You had money lost. I mean how. Vegas was how vegas was. The beginning of it was. I was loving. It was in the credible. So let let me start with that. I nothing against the saint. Louis rams but the ramsfield bigger nothing against you know your jacksonville. Jaguars or your oakland raiders. But god is vegas perfect. Are the raiders. perfect for. Vegas is vegas. Perfect for the raiders. But i wanna talk about derek. Carr and there are ten quarterbacks in this league better than derek carr. And there's twenty quarterbacks. In this league that derek carr is better than he's in a group of two or three guys. We can argue about tanna hill. Derek carr i like car matt ryan derek carr no carson wentz derek carr. He's he's not as good as tanis better than twenty and then we can argue about stuff. Dax probably better. But he's in that class but what he did. Last night is what baker mayfield could not do sunday. Almost no time in the clock he trails. Everybody in the stadium including the defense nosy has to pass. Boom boom field goal overtime win. What baker couldn't do sunday. Derek had thirty seven seconds. Baker had two minutes. Baker had two drives three and out on one interception on the other darik had one and thirty seven seconds with a worst supporting cast and a worst offensive line. And derek carr did. What top twelve. Quarterbacks do. When ev said yesterday the ninety nine percent of this league is paid to be able to lead a team down the field when they have a great offensive line. A great running game a great scheme and the defense has no idea what you're doing as baker. Mayfield monday or sunday. That's what you're paid to do that. Just being a guy talking sports host. You could just be a person get ratings. That's the difference. Derek carr did what baker couldn't do thirty seven seconds. Bigger two drives his final drive in two minutes. One three and out one pick this. Nfl is not about just. Hey i've got a lead. That's why. I always say about alabama quarterbacks to lead mack jones look trailing how jones look would not want time. How mack jones look when maybe the other team and more good players didn't team you're on. That's the difference. Derek carr every single human new. You got about three place. That's it and you have to throw pin the ears back brim. Linebackers drop sixty bs. Boom boom feel overtime. Wins it four hundred thirty five yards two touchdowns to pick should have been caught. The receiver got a hand on it. But that's the difference between a guy and special and derek isn't as good as the top ten in this league. You know who they are. And he's better than twenty he's in. The argument would tanna hill and matt ryan. And maybe a carson wentz. And by the way most good quarterbacks above derek carr in this league josh allen russell wilson aaron rodgers. Patrick mahomes tom brady. You know the top guys. They're not asked to carry a bad roster. Derrick cars asked to carry a bad roster. This is a fourth place team. This team's gonna finish seven and ten. They don't have denver's roster the chargers roster kansas city's roster derrick one of the only really really good quarterback in this league the other is matt ryan who is asked to carry a sub optimal roster. So i'm going to defend them time and time again. I've said this it's easy to have a great life. If you're a trust fund kid. It's hard when you come from chaos in you have to carry parents or carry a brother and carry. A sister and work is school work at college. Derek carr may have the most dysfunctional front office in the nfl. Guyer's fired in the off season. The gm's had multiple picks with gruden's crazy town out. No if he can coach anymore. The offensive line's not as good as last year. The offense has basically carried by guys. Derek carr and darren waller and they're both excellent waller's insane. But i love what i saw last night. I'm not saying he's as good as the top ten. I'm not saying he's russell wilson. That's what i'm saying but what he did last night. That is elite level quarterbacking. You look at a stadium. Thirty seven seconds. You don't have a great roster. They double team. And darren waller. You gotta get down the field for a field goal and tie it. Everybody knows you're throwing linebackers drop it in the coverage penetrators back boom boom field goal. Ot when it. That's elite quarterback play. Here's derek carr reminded me so much so far. Focus group because both sides we may plays. Tell us lose it to help us win it but the only thing that matters scores we've talked about god congrat- the derek carr. I will support lamar jackson in a little bit. Usc fired their coach yesterday. Nice guy didn't get done. No reason to stomp on him. Wonderful family man. Good luck to clinton. "Best offensive line. All I know is that Mississippi Ole Miss was putting three guys and they were doing a pretty good job of whipping five guys. I'm not entirely sure night. That wasn't the Indianapolis Colts. Based on those jerseys. They played like it, That's for sure. Well, uh, looking at the wounds going on, and you can talk to coach Satterfield tonight? There'll be a short week. Uh, Because they're going to they got back. If it was their flight. I mean, I have a hard time believing it was there was only one flight at three in the morning from Atlanta here, um, so they got back very early this morning. You figure there's gonna be some training room tape session type stuff today and then Oh, Back to the drawing board to try and put it in the right direction before you got Um Eastern in here on Saturday. And then you've got another. Relatively short week. Because then you've got you. CF is here Friday night. The following Friday night. I think one thing was made clear this weekend. Not put this out on Instagram that the national championship College football over your needs to be played in Rose Bowl and, oh, by the way, they do play a little bit of football at West Oh, absolutely. Well, that's why it cracks me up every time I hear. Yeah, Every time I hear people go well, nobody gets to watch teams on the West Coast while they I've been banging that drum and and part of it because I'm partial because I lived out there. They play every bit of good football out there as they do here, you know, it's interesting that George Safer back in the day created the West Coast offense as they called it, etcetera, etcetera. And then that was adopted in some similar fashion by it first before the big schools of Stanford's in the useless in the U. S sees, um by believe it or not, a little team called Idaho. The Vandals. Coach. My Dennis Erickson who played my my guys, e k you back in the day in the one playoffs at one time. It was really interesting to watch. And then you saw what happened to him. He went on to great things. You say Idaho was the Vandals. Yeah, they're coming into play Indiana this week. How are they? Not the fighting potatoes. I don't know. That'd be good place. They Idaho. Actually, Idaho actually played Simon Fraser. This weekend. It's a university out of British Columbia. I had to be a person and so they get in the country. I thought we weren't allowed to go to Canada. Maybe Idaho is pretty much Canada anyway, depending on which part you go to, But, yeah, they do play a little bit of football. I think in large part, though, do um that's the Ed or is wrong. We've all grown to know and love. And there's a reason I remember when USC passed on when they had a chance to hire everybody. Like what are you doing? Not hiring them. Well, that's kind of why. I.

"Days now we all know alabama storied programs in college football history. But miami is to bama has won thirteen championships. An ap poll aaron. The most of any school miami has five themselves now mostly during the eighty worthy. You one fifty eight straight home games. That's when you were there. Michael and you guys were truly culture. Changes to tell me this. Do you ever think miami will be a national powerhouse. Like that again the us glory days when you start there and we always say that we always ask that question and we put that on my get back to this. That's an incredible incredible error. It's an error that obviously what we're watching right now. The the domination at alabama has had right now still hadn't talked what we did. They still have not had the straight home victories. That's what you're saying. This miami team go do that and it reached that. I don't think they will ever reach. That is so huge and what we did but to get back to somewhere in this fight somewhere in this game. Go and win ten eleven games. Try to get back in these playoffs. Yes i do. Believe miami and coach. Manny can't get back to that your position is laughable absolutely laughable. Now i will give you this. It was very entertaining to watch the you back in the day. I mean right as much as i loved watching you. And a few of the other cats are also loved watching vinny testaverde's brothers roll up in the fatigues and all of that other stuff you know i get all of that and i also pay attention to the fact that three different coaches gave you undefeated seasons and jimmy johnson. Great jimmy johnson. Dennis erickson all. Right and larry coker and still got bob national sabin got more than you bumster. He got your program. Let's put in proper perspective. Let's also the other thing. You were an independent when they were playing at miami right then. Y'all went to the big east then after that they've been in the acc. Did they win when they were in the acc when they won the national to last night two thousand one no they will never the big east now. Nah playmaker michael quite a bit. I mean sec. Big biggies stopped the. Wait a minute at no time in the history of miami's program. Did they ever play in a conference. Like like the fcc is that a fact let me. This is a fact value. This also let me say this. Also get one. We're talking about now. We're in this playoff era. Three or four games the three or four teams. They get in every year. When we came we came up to three or four team that allowed to oklahoma and nebraska were killed so if we were in a playoff like that a four four killed ten or twelve. And i do believe that man now back then it was all these old in everybody deciding on who was a nagara chan. I remember so it was more subjective than objective you give it to objectively. We would ring in all and left out of all the time. The playoffs objective. You got teams every year. Arguing about who should have been should have been out so we understand that at the end of the day somehow some way babble and ends sunday how great alabama i'm not audible ran into alabama playing us. I'm not alabama was in the his. I am not trying to infant national championship. Spot natural championship. Three separate is giving that to you. I'm by the way y'all will. Culture changes as well. Let's go down me major benefit. I like to element to combat. I appreciate that but at the end of the day. The level of dominance. When you talk about fifty eight straight home games at some point tom. How many times molly. I'll bring up to things and you can attest to this. Because he may not know two things. I always bring up with molly. Why don't i got resume. And i bring up competition and it amazes me how we ignore competition. We're raising somebody and what they've done a whole lot about mankind. We didn't have copetition. No florida teams and those florida state. Being our hope you ain't talking about those. Were not great dane. Those were not green on monday. Now i know you are not saying you're consistent level of competition with not comparable to what alabama has to face in the sec. That's what i'm saying. That's indisputable mike. Beautiful you can't necessarily by that. I'm not saying that. Sec right now. As green school auburn's a great schools great companies but we play that's when oklahoma's in all of the nebraska all those things we went through and all those people withdrew wouldn't dominated the sec teams. You talking about right now so. Tell me no dating team now. The playoffs over here. You can't if. I'm wrong about this fair. But my recollection is that usually and saying florida flaws states in different atom. I get all of that. Great bobby battle. When he was coaching them. We will state more so to florida but nevertheless nevertheless is the bottle on those teams could not. I'm not. I'm not saying things really. I'm saying usually win against that. Level of competition with the title on the line alabama faces these brothers middle of the season and somehow someway muslim down and snicks tape has been doing it all of these years and i wanted to look the level of the dominance. I'm trying to understand what you're saying. I'm telling you you're talking about the level of competition is look when you're asking that when you're acting miami achieved great things. Even though i'm not taking away. I'm saying to me. It doesn't compare to what alabama has done. You were an independent in the big east conference. You kidding me before you go to the. Acc that eight the sec and onset. I didn't see them. What do you not still in school. What do playing then. What would what were they. Comparing what alabama has go into. What miami used to do right and tell you what my news to me. You the competition. That miami that we went through alabama has gone through more copetition when the fourteen at these same. Three or four teams. every with. I don't agree with where we look at that. Don't agree with the fcc has stacked the division now that we on going. I'm saying to you the get alabama for second when you look at the rest of their conference and you look if you took away miami and you looked at the rest of your conference of the competition that you wanna get out saying to you. Alabama might make that competition look weak. Relatively strong against everybody else is when they roll up against alabama. They found out what the this you went out on the water hair you wasted yotam going atlanta for that game. You watch for you. So you're like like it was a different. Why would you subject joe self today. Him and his body in their grandma and knew what was throwback throwback more what will you think it do. Just what.

Texans what is that and and but this was before the team starting okocha else didn't really start playing until two thousand two. Yeah so they. They called me as hey. We sing your resume. We wanna bring you down to interview. So i was like okay Like all right. Houston i like the city of houston to be i e houston was a great great place and i said you know when i get i got to college i would love to go to houston so was there like any moment in your mind right there. That was like this isn't real estate. Scam houston texans. Would remember that. That's exactly. I never even heard these guys so i quickly looked it up after it and i was like. This is real and So i went down there Because i was in california. I went back to california. 'cause i was doing an internship out there and and and they called me when i was in california and they said yeah you know we wanna wanna bring you down to interview you for a position that we have. It's an internship and i was like. Yeah let's let's do it so i go down there and it's funny it was right. It was ryan speaking of lives in this step. It was right after nine eleven. So so i go off. Live from san francisco to Houston in it's like seven. People wanna play and i was like. Wow okay this is. This is common scary. I get there. I'm interviewing with them with the with the managers over there and literally meant. It was like a again if you can remember that time. Everything was so hanson in in in the in the office building that interview with at the alarms just started going off like betas. Yeah they start going off and now. I'm looking around at Manager he's looking at me like what's going on here. I was like it's like being you know about this. Is this real man. What are you doing. We gotta his. I gotta go light on. The interview was like maybe five minutes and then that happened and then so we we just left and he called me later. He was like you know what i want. I want to bring you on. I wanna hire you. Just don't like i don't even know what i did but just sell arms man. I'm telling you on was just as scared as you know. Who's going on either man. We we have to get out of there. You know oslo fascinating gave out. You weren't so maybe it's me like man. I know i'm not i'm not. I'm not trying to all victims of that and so So yeah no. It started there and then So i got an here and one thing that that i think is important. I'm always kind of think is important. Is you gotta kinda network and you kinda gotta know where you wanna go when what you wanna do and so in doing that you wanna try to meet as many people as possible now. The the internship did i got wasn't ticketing and so i was like okay. This is gonna give me in the door. And i'll see where it's you know. Meet the folks at that. Where i wanna be and so I was there for about a year and during that year it would gave me time to meet like The communications afford taxes. And you know the whole staff The whole organization Bob mcnair who was the owner of the team at the time and he was he was actually a really cool guy man. He's just a i. I'm just an intern. there you know. And he's coming up. Hey how you doing you know. And i'm like oh man. This guy really knows my name but of course you know you run like a billion dollar company. You know everybody that's coming in and it still kinda made you feel like okay. At least i feel like. I'm belong so again. I just kind of like you know may way through introduce myself to tony while he was the Who was a vp communications. They're told him what i wanted to do. and the the crazy thing about bad he ended up going to He was a graduate of texas southern university which was Which was which was a small hugh in in in texas in houston and i was at an from gramling so we kinda connected with that With that background you know so we kinda got close. And he was like eight man. You know if you wanna come over here After you get off work with the taking an income kind of learn what we're doing over here. I was like yes no-brainer. You giving me opportunity. I thought it was. I thought it was cool. Man yeah. I do it for free so so i started going over there and kind of learning the nuances. That now on a meeting players we we had a we had drafted. Derek carr carr david carr brother. David carse. i'm getting a chance to like need him. And he was like the first taking draft. Some you know seeing how how these guys work work together and now meeting Like big time media people like John clayton. I don't know if you guys remember him but he was on. Espn saw. i'm like now getting to be like really close with these guys and kind of tells me like okay. Yeah we need. We need to talk to. We need to talk to david for interview. And i was like okay so now i gotta go david telling what the interviews about. Bring them over to bring him over to john clayton in his me doing this now and you know and i'm only doing it after i get off work from doing the ticketing okay and you will like that guy in the nba two k. When you play the when you play the my career mode and you finish a game but one that liked comes over and it's like hey you you had a great game tonight. We want to have an interview with you. They take you over to the other. Take you out it. Yeah yeah yeah yes. Oh man. So i did that with those guys and then Then they didn't have a permanent position there so he has so. Tony introduced me to got an kirk reynolds. Who was with the san francisco. Forty niners and So he's like all right we'll we'll we'll We have actually a seasonal. Pr internship if you wanna do that. Yeah why not get a chance to go back home to the bay area. So i went in. I went and did that with them. And they had like a great team Over there at that time they you know they had just came off the the nfc championship game With mary ut was a coach then went up by the time i got there. They they had brought on dennis erickson. And so i'm getting a chance to meet these guys now so now. Steel kind of building up my network and so after a while. Stay there for like a couple of years. And after a while i was just like you know what i can of go out on my own instill utilize these utilize these contacts than i have and instead of just being tied to one team i can you know. I mean. there is a month's worth of shows based on what that list had but we will talk to our guest here in a minute. Cal is up next in chicago. Hello cal paul our you well thank you. I just wanted to make a point here about the conference expansion. I don't know what taxes thinks that they're getting into They can't handle horns down gesture in the big twelve. I don't know how they're going to handle getting. Bali lost half the teams in the week to week basis and i also wonder As a conference expands Do you think that There there's a chance of the relegates Certain teams like south carolina for example to the north to make room for other teams. No i don't think cal. The anyone is leading the sec. I appreciate the call. Thanks so much for being here. Mike is up next in fort worth a hell. Am i good afternoon. Go paul. hey up. there's a lot of talk about what's gonna happen to the remain twelve team and Basically what the papers standing dallas fort worth is there. I mean it's bad. don't get me wrong. But they're not in this basically telling everybody to calm down as long as they're as long as they're in the power five conference deal. They're they're not in bed. Is bad a shape as you think They're still getting close to forty million a year with oklahoma texas. Let's say texas and oklahoma leave next year. This they'll get about fifteen to twenty million a piece and then after the contract expired at twenty four the senate probably merged with the pac twelve. So and i'm here in fort worth or tcu fan and t they say brings a different components for pay twelve. 'cause i a her oregon and usc they say they would. They would look at tcu because they the football program has dropped down last couple years but they bring a dallas forward television market in recruiting and So the big twelve remaining eighteen. I think are Love they stick together and they don't lose another person. They're going to be fine. They're still getting paid off money. Being twenty four. I think to what do you think my. Thanks for the call. Would you put bob dole's beyond because it sounds like you're reading from his cue cards. I disagree with pretty much. Everything you've said but i appreciate your thoughts. We are heading to a break. More of your calls at eight five five to four to seven to eight five bill conley about his list. He's always controversial. This one might be all timer. He joins us next listening to paul. Finebaum show podcast. Well we have shared The last one through one hundred with you over the last thirty minutes bill collie put together and we always enjoy bill joining us bill. Thanks for the time before we get to the list. Give us how you compiled it. Yeah i mean this is like a lot of the other lists. I've done. I mean just by a whole bunch of kind of disparate factors in one but i looked at the general when percentages that. And you know how many high level seasons you had kinda got my people. That's right in devolved a little bit. Like the most interesting part. I was to adjust some to some degree. Four where you coached where you accomplish the things you accomplished. So it wasn't simply a list of Guys who won a lot of games at the bigger schools other. The listing quibble about But i'm i'm curious just in terms of reaction that you have gotten. Could you share with us where the biggest complaints have come from the biggest push back. I've gotten. I really actually did not see this coming was was having bill snyder There what a. I think eighth overall that was a no brainer to me with just knowing having grown up in big twelve country knowing what. Kansas state was at that point in their history The fact that they couldn't find anybody who wanted the job that never finished ranked number one bowl That was just a the lowest of the low in terms of power conference programs for him to have them on. The precipice of a national title bid a decade later. It remains one of the most incredible things wherever going to think. That's great i've got i've i've got to ask you if you think about that Yeah bills an automated. An thomas your series either or which was l- but bill schneider better than joe paterno. Eddie robinson steve spurrier pete carroll in woody hayes. I mean i mean you. Do you do follow college football. Don't you know. I have the easiest. Ought to say that there are about fifteen coaches there. Were all basically bunch together. Really close but no i mean i i just i. I saw firsthand. What kansas state was before and after and that that obviously he kind of impacted. Hey bill gates or better You know a lot of other people have seen. Darrell royal in woody hayes and all these and have got to be going you gotta be out of your mind. Think the bill. Snyder should be ranked ahead those. I'm just. I'm just giving you some some anecdotal evidence here. Oh yeah well aware well aware of people picking way. But i'm comfortable with the fact that he did it where he did it. As opposed to texas where. Ohio state or usc. I think made up a lot of ground. There okay A couple of other ones and mike lee should forty one. He is ranked ahead ahead of. I'm just gonna go through a couple of names john. Merritt vince dooley shug jordan. Phillip fulmer john. Major's i mean it's endless Explain that one would you that one was. I mean obviously that was kind of a leap of faith. Pick kinda win against by numbers..

"Can watch whatever you want whenever you out no doubt which is really cool and then get a lot of ways. It's really cool. I think in some ways that can be harmful You because you watch you want some of these kids like no you're imitating the wrong thing. You don't imitate the way dresses. And the way he celebrates another album imitate all the work. He's doing in the weight room and on that stuff. That's actually not on video. And then if you do all that stuff then you can work on your touchdown to ask but Let's go let's go. Let's all the stuff that got him into the end zone. Got him on the team and gotten there It's a little bit Little bit frustrating. Sometimes you see these kids like no no no. You don't get to do that celebration. You're not superman. You're sixteen Let's go. Let's go imitate everything. That cam newton did too to earn the right to be in the end zone before you start to the superman deal. Well i'm sure when you were sixteen and you were in high school and you through a lot of touchdowns Do you have a time when you try to do that. And your dad was like we don't do that drew. Nah yeah. I think i think we were. We were. I mean it was sort of different. I think you know the guys that we watched you know there was. There was not a lot of that going on. You know i mean you know. I mean joe montana would point at the sky and that was about as you know as crazy elevations got from the quarterbacks that we watched you know So you know. I think we just had. We had the role models. We have not standpoint were different You know i did remember. I do remember watching. Neil the the The Like the dolphins receivers back in the day. Who had they're kind of orchestrated touchdown stuff which. I thought that was really fun. But i can't dance at all so i mean that's just going gonna look like you're like me. You probably need two or three bottles of wine before you get out in the day before you even try and even then it doesn't look good. I still don't want anybody watching I had I so i played with henry. Ellard right. and you to- hop a touchdown and he'd do a front flip in the end zone right and i'm like kennard. Can you teach that. He goes because she can't do it. I'm like track really run. I gotta go there no alyssa. Let's just leave the leaflets. Flips to the athletes. You just keep throwing the ball but so you go through high school. You're getting recruited. You know you're going to get ready to make this next big transition in your life and you pick a wash state. What was the big reason for that. coach just fell in love. Mike price who is the coach there. also closer to home. It was two hours from home which That was important in other in a not just for my family but so many people that i that that helped me as i was coming up Being close enough to You know they could get to watch games But the other three schools that were kind of in the mix university of washington was in the mix stanford and then And then i took a trip to miami. But i knew i wasn't going to miami That we took that plane rides it yet. I can't well. I knew going in man is too far away but i wasn't gonna turn down a trip to miami. I mean at that point. I think i'd been on an airplane once or twice in my life and they're gonna fly down to plenty down to south beach In the middle of the winter. I mean come on But i knew that was far away matter of fact the only reason that i was that That they knew that i existed was dennis erickson. Who was their coach down. There had been at washington state previously. So he'd seen me at high school otherwise they wouldn't have known i existed would like to had huddle and all that stuff that they have today. Find out you had to go remember. Remember sitting downstairs with my dad you know with two. Vcr's trying to dub a highlight taped together and you know put together put together like two minutes of video took hours. We did the same thing. Yeah i ran a t in high school. So i had like really. I didn't know that ran through my team. He throw it like three times a game. And i tell the story that in my career in high school i like forty five times and then i got to my first game in college through it like you know fifty in my first game. It's amazing how you how'd you how'd you. How'd you figure out how to become a passing quarterback when you ask you. Did you go to like some seven stuff in the summer or no. No we didn't there was none of that around here. I went to I was a big baseball player. Could always throw it no matter. What and Playing in the wing t obviously didn't lend itself to learn how to drop back or learning how to be in the shotgun. We never did any of that stuff. We ran the wagle one. Some of that stuff but I got to college my freshman year. they they knew of six fives a big kid. I could throw it And it was just a lot of hard work man just putting in time and the effort We had a coach workman who i mean. We were in the gym tulsa. What didn't have any money. We're throwing a ball against wall sin. Exploding them against the wall. I mean we don't stanage. Was this kid from texas big kid. You know i'm coming. I was like one of the biggest kids in my high school. And i go there. And i'm like i'm going to be okay. Then you get there and you see all these other athletes from all these other states and you're like oh i got to work and i luckily had that kind of mentality from my dad and all one of fifteen kids so yeah so they grew up in the depression and like you had worked for everything you had. And that's you know. I was in eighth grade. My dad bought me a new pair cleats to play. Football broke my foot. The first day of practice he said. I didn't buy those cleats to sit in a shelf. Just tie your shoe tighter. So i tied my shoe. Tighter played the whole season on a broken while. That's kind of the mentality kinda of. Va was for me. But but i was going to tell you that. I played for coach price in the blue gray game and it was really and his son. What was his son's name. Eric errors. Eric and erin was the kicker. Yeah so i think it was eric who was the quarterback right. He was a qb. Yeah exactly and then they were. He coached the blue gray game. And i was there and he is. You're right though. He was a great guy. Oh man i loved him. The does still do to this day. He's he's retired now. Live in quarterlane idaho You know hanging out on the lake but But when i was being recruited you know we we you know we had all the different coaches come through and and You.

"Paid for by business roundtable. Good things come to those who wait at jersey mike. They also come to those who don't download the app order ahead. Skip the line now. Through june twentieth. Use the code. The heard for a dollar off your order. I go back to those portland days when i covered. They call them. The oregonian newspaper dubbed him the jail blazers because they had a lot of different things going on. But i will say this. They weren't the greatest team to interview like a lot of the guys were sullen and didn't wanna talk. And you know. I just came to terms with that. But in terms of i covered a winning franchise like when you cover a team and they win. Fans are engaged. They watch your local news. So i the time when i was there. Portland was always interesting. They were always good oregon. Football was good. The the blazers were good so it was. I didn't have oregon state was even dennis. Erickson was even good. So i got better local life when the team is. Oh yeah. there's i mean the reality is when you're in a local sports caster and the teams stink. It's no fun like you want eyeballs. And it's also who wants to go to games in report a team getting blasted by twenty joy with a news. Turn on the news. This is the headline news. So the bucks are in a two zero hole against the net says. The series moves to milwaukee going to matter. Well i don't want to overreact because the nets are supposed to win those names right. So there's not really into panic in general. You're supposed to win your home games and series. I know but you're not supposed to get blown out twice when james harden can't even play that part but janos is still confident that his team can bounce back he said. I don't get too high too low. After the miami series we were up four zero and coming to the series. I wasn't high now that we're down to not low. I'm going to keep doing what i'm doing. Keep trusting my work. Keep trusting my teammates believing them keep believing in the habits. We built all year and hopefully in game three. We get a win your points. The nets beat the bucks. One two thousand five. He six one two without james harden. Does everybody understand. That is like that game at one thirty nine points. It's just phys- dramatic dramatic. I mean honestly. Eighteen points is not gonna do it. Chris middleton seventeen. I was thinking about this joy. What happens a lot in sports like there are certain markets like like miami and basketball or la with the rams and football or dallas. There are markets that are very good. Free agent markets were players when players have a choice they picked the markets. Then you get into these situations and milwaukee's one of them the packers are but let's just say with milwaukee that you don't get a lot of free agent so you to do. It's very easy buffalo. Did this for years until they got a good. Gm coach you overspend on players thinking. That's the best we can do. They paid a fortune for chris. Middleton chris middleton of four. I mean he is. He looked so irrelevant in this series with great talent but again they were trapped. They wanted to make sure your honest thought. We're going to keep him so we're going to pay for if chris middleton goes to the market. What's what's the la teams aren't going to go after him. So they're kind of trapped now 'cause you have to pay for because he's a legit star they paid a huge number for middleton and i think a lot of that is that sort of that low that low self esteem thing there are these smaller markets that feel like nobody loves us and so they overpay for good players and pay him great money and i think they're kinda trapped with what what kind of trapped with middleton's contract they might be but i also don't want to put this middleton y'all says the school more than eighteen point i get them like the my my issue with the boxes and i don't want to overreact again. This is very early in the series although they had looked terrible. You can't lose like that with james harden in a crispy prada shoot shirt on the sideline. Like you gotta do better than that. You gotta give you gotta give him a fight i just. They're not team like they've done absolutely nothing to prove that i should be freaking out about them and the posies thing about this joy. We know with automobiles. Some automobiles convertibles. They're good summer fall cars yet but you can't have a convertible in ninety nine percent of america in the winter. It's the same thing some things in your life. Serve you for just certain parts of the year. Yawn is a great regular season player. But when i play 'em six times. I can marginalize his game. This is westbrook shoot but if westbrook comes into town. Your team is tired. You don't watch a ton of film and westbrook is who by the way apparently is never tired. Westbrook drops thirty four triple double and you're like exhausted but if i play westbrook seven times i can build a game plan that i think milwaukee and janas have just become the classic great regular season team and there's nothing wrong with that there's value in that in the sport i just i don't like to be overpitched things like i can see what i can see like everyone freaking out about katie last night katie kevin durant who so amazing mike this is to kevin so same kevin durant it's twenty twenty one you can fix an achilles now like it's not a it's not a career ending injury yes is it hard injury to come back from short kevin durant isn't three hundred pounds right. He was arguably the greatest player in the league next to laurent when he is healthy. So he's doing what kevin durant does. He's incredible why is this a shock. Anyone like that's kind of why his reaction in the post game interview was that like this is what i do is what for god because i was injured for a while. But this is what i do. Kevin durant has proven himself in the postseason. I'm allowed to overreact with the nets of done champion. Like there's some pedigree here and the postseason with team. I get it. They don't have a lot of defense. But when you can score like that when you have kevin durant team this is. You should be able to do more than this your two time. Mvp so are favored my four in game. Three on thursday. Take provence bat multi brooklyn quite a bit of points when you just put up eighty four so the mavericks traded for kristaps porzingis. When he was supposed to be a second story we supposed to pair with luger dodgers star as really panned out the way the team is hoped and luca has clearly emerged as the leader of the team and now is reportedly frustrated with his role in the offense and he believes he's more of an afterthought then a co star to luca in the organization is mark. Cuban has previously admitted that dodgers and porzingas friends on the floor. Yeah luca is one of the best young players in the sport right now. So it's not that you're not better. Yeah i you gotta listen you gotta come to terms with who you are like porzingas porzingas my third or fourth best player. I don't think he's a two and what they're now by the way. Dallas is another organization. This is interesting because dallas historically doesn't land free agents. It makes no sense to us now. But they wildly overpaid for porzingas. Dallas is a little in that milwaukee thing where you're like okay you got a contract that if privately if you ask the gm milwaukee the gm of dallas. They'd be like damn that we have overspent. So what do you do in that spot like. There are only so many great players available. You do not sign him or do you say like we're just we're not going to you that contract and risk losing him like how does how do so. I think about this all the time. Because i would love to be. Gm a of basketball or.

"Michael Riedel on 7 10 double you are well. The mayoral primary is coming fast. It's just two weeks from next Tuesday, and most people feel well. That's the race for for mayor because the Democrat who wins that You know, almost the shoe. And now, Michael, you're the only member of this Mary team here that actually lives in the city. Now, will you vote on Primary day? Well, not I'm a Republican. So it doesn't really matter. You know you have a couple of Republicans running Yeah, but you know, they don't have you got no shot, so I'll seriously there's a guy involved in civic government right there. They're spying. That's my Mikey. I wait for the election and listen if bread Adams or Kathryn Garcia One of those gets in there. I'll probably vote for that person. Eric Adams. You mean Eric Adams? Sorry, just trying to have the bright Adam's car. Dennis Erickson really upset right now, and that's where the found Well, that's where the fireworks and there was a debate last night. And that's where the fireworks existed amongst the front runners and pretty much Eric Adams and the injury. Yang have been going at it, I guess the third one In the front running role would be Kathryn Garcia, the former sanitation commissioner. Now Katherine's going to join us at 705. And to answer Michael's question. No, she was not wearing a leather on the debate last night. Michael likes her her campaign TV ad because she's The resplendent in a leather and that for some reason, you would you like that fit? Well, she looks like Olivia Newton John at the end of Greece. You know, when she comes back with her leather pants and jacket on our business, the important stuff, Natalie? No, no, absolutely not Do not embarrass yourselves by mentioning that to her. Oh, hey, that was thrilled with this thing you ever said happened? What are you wearing this morning? Whatever you want to get yourself fired me to go for it. I'm gonna bet that pretty much it's 706. Someone's gonna bring up leather, but just a guess. No, no. Now let us look happy. That's too bad. That s O Caterp said that you've got to realize you can't plant the seeds in our head. You never would have occurred to me to ask her. She never leather this morning ever. But now now, how could you not ask her? Exactly? It's you know, it's gonna be sitting right there on the table. Well, let's listen to Catherine Catherine was talking about gun violence last night of the big Make investment in the gun suppression unit and really dig into the data, So we're pinpointing. Where this is occurring. So there you go. There you have. Thought anyway. Eric Adams and as your Jag going head to head here is here is what you call a Bryan Adams know you call him Brett Brett. Anyway, here is Eric Adams, the Brooklyn Borough president who may be the front runner, right? You were in on the ground. You started discovering night shift when you were running for mayor. You just started discovering violence. When you were running for mayor, you started discovering the homeless crisis when you're running for mayor. You can't run from the city. Andrew, if you want to run the city Wow. He's going after injury hanging up at here's Here's Yang. We all know that you've been investigated for corruption everywhere. You've gone city state. Even Barack Obama's Department of Justice investigated you, you've achieved the rare trifecta of corruption investigations. Oh, this is getting good. Yes. Is getting good. Yeah. Tell how about Maya? Whoa, Uh, wow. Here she is. All right, so we're talking. When we came on the air. We mentioned my wily because I said to Joe, I said Someone was just yelling a lot, and any time they tried to get her to stop, she kept talking, and she really doesn't have a background in politics, his attorney, But here's a little bit of Maya Wiley from last night's that I thought you made a name for herself, but not in a good way to get that case over to the New York City Police Department with charges and to protect the civilian prosecution. Power that we gotta wrap up in the C C. R B to make sure our prosecutors prosecuted the case..
