"About this during the break. Look at the way they message on the on the vaccine anthony. Fauci doesn't come out and say listen. Okay i i understand that. We just had an a contentious election. I understand we're in a political atmosphere. My jobs to rise above all of that and i'm just interested in public health and i don't care if you've who you voted for or how many times you voted or how you voted last year. I'm trying to stop bit from wreaking havoc in our society. That's my job. And i think there's some misconceptions out there about these vaccines. I don't wanna see this get politicized so let me address a few of them. Is that what we're seeing. No he goes. He goes on very partisan outlets. These are red states You know you've politicized this all. The language is authoritarian in nature because culture authoritarian. How dare you not sign up for the group. Think how dare you think for yourself. How dare you ask contrarian questions you're the one that's letting us all down. That's the same kind of language that is being used here and it's going to be used in the future on. Virtually every debate that we want to half yes. It is steve so fake news or not. Throughout human history our species has typically been prone to ignore potentially cataclysmic events in favor of comfort and carrying on with our daily lives however for perhaps the first time a segment of the american population is bound and determined to turn covid nineteen into the apocalyptic event. Hit never was this morning it. That's absolutely true news this morning. I'm guessing no my routine by now when i'm not doing this for a living or getting prepped. If i'm listening to something outside of work for wind down it's usually something church related or sports related right some. I'm at the gym today. And i'm listening to sports podcast. And and the guest on the podcast is one of the biggest college football writers in the country. Dennis dodd from cbs. Sports and dennis dodd is openly admitting on this pot that this this this is the first time. He's been out of his home in fifteen months that he went to an he went to Kind of a college football muggy mu- gathering and in phoenix last back in may and then he's going to. Sec media days here in a couple of weeks and he goes. i'm. I'm frankly. This point. I just i just need to see people and i wanted. I wanted to get like philosophically disdainful at this. You know what i'm saying. But on a human level harshest broke for this guy regardless of what his ideology is or is belief system is and i'm guessing that's opposite of ours. He's still made in the image of god man. Jesus came to set the captives three free. This guy highly educated highly intelligent is captive to his fear. Told us he just. I would guess see somewhere in his fifties i would guess and and maybe there's a story i don't know maybe he's pre diabetic or something. But he didn't you think you'd mentioned something like that right And he didn't and i'm and so. This is a guy whose life has been traveling around the country to cover the main game in college football every week and he's done it most of most of our lives fans like all of aaron's life he's been around okay you would think the natural human inclination when when that's your job that as a man even christian men struggle not to find their ultimate meeting in their jobs right let alone secular ones. That's your identity. That's your worth. That's you're calling and something comes along to take that away from you. Isn't the natural human inclination to be. No i'm not buying that. Because i don't wanna give up. That's my idol. In a way right right. i don't want to give that up. Who might who's dennis dodd. If i'm not as superior nationwide college football writer who am i instead. Steady willingly gave it up instead. He couldn't give it up fast enough instead he was like. Wow what a shinier. More impressive idle. Let me let me clutch this one instead and i do think that's new. I think it's it's certainly. If there's other moments in human history where the populist desired oppression desired it for For of an apocalypse it's not the normal human clay inclination. It certainly isn't in the western tradition. I mean the reason why. The story of superman's origin were his father. Jurrell brings to the elders that the planet krypton is gonna blow up and they don't wanna listen the reason that resonates is because that's how we typically respond right right. I don't want to give my life up. I'm complacent at leisure technology. I like my my wife. I don't want to just hand. All no we reversed the story now. The scientists jurrell ran the test and the plan. it's fine. they may be some minor adjustments here there. And i think we're gonna be okay but the elders the owners of crypt on her like no. This thing's going to blow up now and now that now they want to run giral out of town because he won't tell him that the planet will blow up. That's what that's what we did with this and enlisting dennis dodd talk about this on this podcast this morning just hammered this point that you just made home. We didn't natural particularly male instinct is to is to have to lock that guy in a room so he doesn't just get out and try to violate every covert order to go to every game anyway. Right nope now. He's he's gotta be begged and cajoled to come back out. That ain't the way this works.

Now it's the university of memphis of course but memphis fans hated ole miss. I mean with a passion and it was. I mean i do remember an occasional victory but not many and use the we usually held up. Ben wasn't thomas right and your mother. Glory was from new york. Of course and and i was from new york and she was just infatuated by the point. me being from new york and What it was is. I had a fraternity brother. That was dating your sister. Pam oh my goodness and pam invited us over To your house and the girl. I happen to be dating. Her dad was in comet trail. So and i was from new york and They you know the conversation just went from there and i believe that time You were sitting there on the couch and was wondering what's this not doing coming from new york all the way to memphis state. That is unbelievable. That Mean i mean that's we're talking more than fifty years ago. I know i've been meaning to call you in Kind of mentioned it to you. I didn't know how you would take it. Oh my goodness. I am most interested in what my mother cooked I tell you the truth Seventy one now. My memory's not. But i do remember you being on the couch and vaguely your sister pam saying that she thought you were going to be the next howard cosell. Yeah she was five years older than me. And i was even at that age. I was pretty fascinated by sports. And you're right. Howard cosell was my hero at the time and Later met him and it was. I could barely speak but You maybe seventy your memory's pretty good. That's a so what happened. What happened after you left. memphis Well the girl. I was dating at the time She was from alabama so we moved albeit alabama. And i've been here ever since we're in alabama's actually him about it's fade alabama. Sure about forty five miles now tuscaloosa. I came up there to say it for to interview a guy that played basketball to junior college. There are many years ago. I know the town pretty well. Yeah i think he did a tour for a Chamber of commerce right. One time i did at the doing college. Yeah well that. That is really i mean. I can't tell you what i don't mean to you. Know get wax poetic here but I can't tell you what that means to me that Have my parents remember that way that that is truly remarkable. I mean i'm just saying the words. I mean from my heart. They were to nicest people and they just you. Mother just couldn't that somebody you know within the same house at the time was from new york. Yeah well. I don't remember but obviously it's pretty embedded in my book my dad and my and my mom and my sister were all from new york i was. I wasn't from new york. I was i was i was. I was from memphis but they were all so my mother. Whatever My sister would run into somebody at school or they were. The new yorkers had Had carte blanche at our house. Yeah let me ask something does memphis. Have you know the memphis state university of memphis. Now have a special place in your heart. Because i believe your mom was. Yeah no of course it does. Yeah because as as growing up. That was the school that we followed. Ultimately went to tennessee but My my favorite sports memories as a kid were memphis basketball and it was so interesting and the program got a lot better After that year but know coach marto came there. And i believe sixty nine or seventy. I can't remember what it was and You know took the team to the final four hundred the championship game three years later and i can still go through And we became very close friends later on when he was when he moved to birmingham. But i can. I can take you through every game of of those seasons Even now the gene borrow.

"Not going to change i i just call them a fly on the wall. They're going to be a witness to history instead of making it. So do you think they'll they'll stay in existence. Because i mean they they do have at least. I'm perceived a role. Although i mean i hear them talk about hear people talking about compliance i l i mean there's an really i'm much compliance on anything anymore. Is there no no they. As i said in the piece again they they will continue to do eligibility they will continue to do enforcement. You know not not well. Some people believe but they throw a heck of a party every march. And you know that they do that. Well they distribute the money from that Everybody loves march madness Could could the president's decide to break away the power five and do their own tournament they could but it would be a heavy lift. And there's really no no need to do it right now. Football is essentially broken away the college football playoffs and autonomy legislation. Basically seeing to that. That's already happened but the the ncaa will exist for those reasons but it won't be big brother anymore again. It'll be a as to what's going on and won't have any say when that first big deal comes and some player gets a car And i hope. I want to put this out there right now. I hope when the president's ratified is tomorrow that they hold a press conference. I think they they. Oh the public.

"We backed up never beat new dry. My grandma's buck in town mystic meg. Gut the backing down mitchell. What does at three point provide a messy precipitation. My game on point off as down the line the espn app download. Now i agree. And i mean mississippi state or not your point it happened. It's not like candidly woke up. This morning i agree. And i've heard some back channel criticism of her today for going out and saying it but if it happened which i'm sure it did. I mean i mean she's a very responsible person you don't go public with something you know with half-baked information doubt and i think that honestly a lot of the voices we hear people who are talking on something that they didn't witness and the people who did witness it might not want to bring more attention to it. They're embarrassed they're nervous to go to the game they've been dealing with this before and it's just another time it's happen when they're out there trying to support their kids and it has nothing to do with anything other than this type of behavior cannot continue and it's just ridiculous to me. Well no it should. It's stacy. I don't think anybody here wants it but it but it's reality and and and there's there's no i mean it's a. It's a cliche. But i'm going to utter it because it's true that you you hear this all the time. You can't put this genie back in the bottle. You can't it's out and all. The statements in the world aren't going to make a bit of difference. I mean we gave you the statement a few minutes ago from from the mississippi state athletic director. I mean i mean what does it mean. People are gonna say oh. Show me a video or didn't happen or oh there's no proof plug instead of continuing the narrative of. Oh there's no proof or oh we don't know for sure like something happened. People are talking about it and which to me is i mean. Mississippi state is a school. That i mean this. This should not be brought up. And i'm to. I mean this is a school that a man named larry templeton broke broke the color barrier when he hired silvester croome and you know it put mississippi state in in a different light than maybe if you want to go back to the sixties in the state of mississippi but stuff like this does matter it gets around and i just i mean. I don't know. I just felt like we had You know we're not talking about well. There's nothing i can say is going to help I'm i'm mortified. That this is. This is a conversation two hours before the second game of the college world series. Yeah and i'm definitely not saying this in response to paul all the other people calling in and people on twitter saying oh well this may or may not be true. No it is true. It did happen. I mean. we don't even need to talk about what happened at tennessee fans at physically went up to maggie corbin and were touching her. And saying you know like this happens everywhere and it happens to everybody but to you. The frustration is continuing to bring in the narrative of. Oh well. there's no way this could happen. No it does happen and it is happening. Stacey thank you and it does have to stop. And i can assure you that a bunch of statements are not gonna make it stop. I don't know what will If if you would go to a baseball game and direct pejorative comments toward fans who are just sitting there. Supporting their children. I mean i. I don't know. I know what that says about someone i i really don't i mean i i. I'm not qualified to wax about You know what even would equate to to someone feeling is they should do that or want to do it. Let's move along and talk to mike who is up next good afternoon. Thank you for the call mike. Hey paul pay their. Hey how you. Today i am fine. Thank you for asking my question. Concerning the fans that the world series has anyone commented on the fan this the whistler that whistles the entire game i would think a lot of people have commented on that. I've read stories about that. And by the way my what does that have to do with with with a fan screaming out another fan. Some racial pejorative. There i go. What kind of annoying. I'm my my my whole. Hey slow down a second. What does the whistler have to do with a fan using the n. word toward a fan of another school. Would you please explain that to me right now. I i got all day to day. Take your time you yes. I understand that that's awful. And there's no no mike mike mike. You're the one that brought up something else. As if you were saying well you know they. I mean it's mississippi. State fan may remain out of used a racial pejorative. But but don't forget nancy's got the whistler. I mean what what does that mean. Well i don't know. I was just curious to what other people thought about dan. Okay well as they say in court added answer let's Go to a break. I we will come back. We have a guest waiting and he couldn't come at a better time. More of your phone calls at eight five five. Two four two seven to five and we are back with dennis. Dodd right after this. "I just wanna talk. Just put my comment on the vanderbilt missive stasis. Wasting with. I mean my problem with it. I heard a few your call us today in my problem with whole thing. Is that people calling in inside outdoor salad to one called before linda. Thank his name. Was bruce from south carolina. He was spot on with everything. I'm tired of hearing people calling in saying it was wrong but like whether the but come from like there's no but it does. It doesn't matter. The situation in is is not causing controversy developing the need to be brought to the light and all sporting events. There's no book racial slurs in any typical way where there's a black person talking to a white person or white presents onto a black person who's wrong. It doesn't matter what squad on had started racist slur just wrong. And that's all. I wanted to say about paul. Thank you thank you Agree with you. I mean uh we've all we've all experienced this in some form or fashion in terms of delete knowing about it hearing it but it it's i. I must admit the idea that happened last night. I i'm surprised. I mean i just at some point you think we we. We all move on I agree with our last caller He's one hundred percent correct. Let's check in with john who was in chattanooga. Hello john go right ahead. Hey how you doing sir. Thank you just a quick Look back. How would mississippi state fads know who the Thunder lodden. I would say most of them would who are well. You got pow mero. And i can't watch car. Yeah i saw. I saw the documentary. I mean by the way. That's the only the only reason i know that is. I saw the thing on on. Tv know that. but again. i didn't grow up at mississippi state baseball fan. So i probably johnny. I have a good night for the record. I couldn't remember clark's name Thanks you appreciate it. We'll take a break. We're more phone calls at eight five five two four two seven two eight five. We were coming back a long way to go to and listening to paul finebaum show podcast. And of course. Sorta big nights is for the college world series. Sec now we'll get you ready for six thirty and eleven when the game concludes which get back to the calls right now. And stacey is up. Next in nashville. Hello stacy paul thank you. I just wanted to call. Because i n beyond disappointed in what's happening with this vanderbilt mississippi state situation there were three starters from that game whose parents were up in the concourse area with racial slurs being said to them so much so that venerable staff families had to call security to get people over there to protect them The daughter of one of the coaches who is cheering on the team is getting booed by state fans. Seven year old girl. We can't keep making excuses and saying oh you have to deal with it if you go to the game though this has happened before why now is it's ridiculous to me. There's no excuse for this half of the year. We'll stacey i agree with you on that and and i but the problem that that i think we've had today is is getting the kind of information that you just shared Had clinton yates on who you may have heard. And he didn't hear it directly he he talked to some of these people and and quite frankly i think it should come out. I mean the. I mean how how can you. There's no justification for this At all it doesn't matter who the two doesn't matter whether it's vandy and in texas or mississippi state and arizona. I call me naive but the idea that in twenty twenty one. i guess. I'm calling myself naive. That fans at a baseball game would be doing. This is just..

"There's going to be a few people that says things that they should not say but we believe that everybody is equal The vanderbilt Players and mississippi state players we all equal no matter where we come from whatever and We try to Do that in In mississippi. And i'm sure they do that at vanderbilt to thank you. Tommy appreciate your call. Bruce's up next. Good afternoon bruce. Thank you for calling. yes sir F you found out if anybody from the mississippi state administration is going to be at the game tonight the monitor. Somebody's people there. Yeah everyone's going to be talked to. John kohn a couple of minutes ago. He's the athletic director mississippi state. He said They really did not know anything about this until earlier. Today and Mark keenum is out there. Who's one of the most respected figures in intercollegiate athletics. He's the president and mississippi state. He's also the head of the college football management committee. John john is everyone. Is there from both sides. This really Came to people's attention couple of hours ago when the athletic director at vanderbilt candidates story lee issued a statement that we we shared with you earlier. john cohen told me that they really again you know i don't want to put words in his mouth because he issued a statement but i mean the issued a statement agreeing with With was kansas lee in terms of the reprehensible nature of this but but he told me off the air that they were looking into it and quite frankly didn't know any more than than anyone else. I mean th th th there. But but i think everyone is going to To the integral to make sure there is more security tonight but yeah you can't i mean again. Clinton aide spoke for himself. I think everyone can draw their own conclusions from what he said you know. He said he did not hear it himself but he talked to people with whom he trusts. So i don't know any more than you do well. Why can't they find out who these people ought to make. Sure they don't go again. I would think that's a good idea. I mean these are these are not the kind of people you want to represent you. And unfortunately they end up The entire fan base gets labeled because of a couple of morons gets there thank you thank. You appreciate the call. Let's check in with with linda. Who is in tennessee. Good afternoon linda. Thank you for calling Yes thank you When mr yates spoke about the a controversy between the state fans and the van de parents i agree. I think it's horrible that it happened. But did he say that It happens sometimes when they go other places side. I think he did yes. He is particularly close to the vanderbilt fam- Parents so that he was using that as his point of reference right and and again. That is horrible but i hate that. He took today to pointed out when when we had the biggest game of baseball for these college kids. You know it's it's labeling the sippy state out think as being part of it even though and like you just said if it takes one person to ruin a whole thing does. I was very careful to make i. I asked him you know. How did you know these were. Mississippi state fans and i thought his answer was interesting to me. Pretty much said there was from mississippi state which is not true Everybody there wasn't from it. I mean there. There are college baseball fans who go to this every year. Regardless of who is who is in it there are fans from. I'm sure that area who go. Because they live there So i don't know these things are always very difficult and y- i think it's important to remember. The vanderbilt athletic director statement was very clear but she didn't. She didn't accuse fan base. She just said it was you know. She's her statement spoke for itself. But i mean. I hate it. I think everybody hates us. Frankly and the idea that a bunch of drunks fans or three drunk fans or ta no artfully idea. How many of these. How many how many more we're we're doing these were was. We're said what they said that what you said they said but you know. I don't think the players would wanna controversy before this guy. Neither controversy in the million. I mean if the whole thing then but anyway thank you sir for me. Yeah glad you co glad you call how 'bout chee next T go right ahead. Are you there. Yes i'm here. I'm doing great. Thank you for calling. If.

"In particular. They decided to crown us national champion after the bolts. And it's also the only time then that the number one number two and number three teams people off on the same day so a similar situation eighty four just happened to be literally the only time until nineteen sixty eight that the crowned national champion after the bowl games and and use. Those poll results happened to be one of the most chaotic days ever where. Ucla upset number one michigan state lsu upset number. Two arkansas alabama was the number four in the polls upset number three nebraska alabama both to the national championship and it's only because the ap decided to start counting the bowl game So time certainly changed in terms of how the national championships designed and that we have kind of several example in this story of of recent national championship game did make because they're on their own day and you know i had to take an account more than one game on one day of these old new year's day game near days out of the national championship but that That made look. You just said something. I have to leave it here. Because we've run so long here but met you shocking. Even now to remember that. The head the notre dame didn't go to a bowl game until the late ninety late late sixties. I guess a the big ten didn't let you go back to the rose bowl. i mean how. How crazy is that. You know people say that again. People say that boulder exhibitions especially in the path. It's just it's wild time to change and it took so you know the seventies really sixty five sixty six years with the start of it all and it's it's just changed so much and now we're back to talking.
Why Would Jaguars Sign Tim Tebow?
"We are back final hour. It's been a fun show. We appreciate you being here. A lot of conversation with my Mike smith earlier. We also talked to dennis dodd. Another conversation predictably has been tim. Tebow we've given you a lot of reaction on that in the mike cannon bom from espn former gm jets dolphins. He's been here a couple of times. He had this to say earlier today. On keyshawn jay will and zubin about understanding the signing. I don't like it. I just don't see the upside in this move. He's thirty four years old. He would be a backup. I just don't know of thirty four year old players that can come in and be back place special teams and you're taking away a roster spot from hopefully a young developmental player that could grow with a young nucleus obviously led by trevor lawrence. And to me this is probably through the lens of urban. Meyer saying a decade. And a half ago tim tiba was the most competitive guy i've ever been around and he can help set the culture. If i was in that building what i would be pushing back saying coach. That may be true but in the nfl as you well know. Players needs to be led by players. They believed can take them to where they wanna go and as a backup tight end. I just don't think tim tebow would have that same credibility as he wants dave when he was the starting quarterback in florida. He also questioned whether tibo could even makes a team. I just don't see how he makes the team or urban and he's a really good coach he he's been historically great college but i just don't know he has to earn a spot and he's given a spot. That's gonna cause a big problem because players weren't have a chance to win and again to me just putting on my lens of a general manager and roster construction if you're not a starter in the nfl with only forty six players dressing you have to play special teams so my question. is tim. tibor thirty four years old going to cover cover kicks that remains to be seen. Now if he doesn't earn it does a totally different discussion. But i don't think you could sign him and say hey. He definitely has a spot on this team.

"Going to talk. Some college football momentarily. By momentarily. I mean, right this second Welcome back. I'm Jim Rome. We're joined right now by a college football Writer, A national college football writer for CBs sports dot com. He is a friend of the program. He is a well known world renowned Javi errors, enthusiast. He is Dennis Dodd. Dennis, What's going on? And I miss Crystal Cove so much during these uncertain times, But thanks for having me on are you? I'm doing great, Dennis. I would say the same thing. And I don't live that far from there, and I still can't get there. So I know exactly what you're talking about. So let me jump right in Dennis. One thought going into the season was that was going to be really difficult for college football programs to fire their head coach is because of the buyouts and what that would mean when there is reduced revenue due to Cove it yet South Carolina fires will must champ over the weekend despite a massive buyout. What do you make of that decision? And what does that say about how badly they want to get away from him? Yeah. I mean, it just broke the seal on everybody, You know, assuming that Oh, they're gonna be more conservative this year from the a Mulligan year. Which I suggested in the summer that you know something like the virus. Might be working the favor of a guy like Clay Helton at USC or Tom Herman. It wasn't a complete evaluation what we could do, but You know, the song remains the same gym They fired. Um They fired will must chance slightly before a month before early signing period that all that tells you all you need to know it's always about recruiting. It's always about getting ahead to the next guy. And you know, $15 million buyout be damned The fact that it's going to cost South Carolina upwards of 30 million plus to change staff when it's all said and done. Be damned. It's just business as usual. Incredible number, really, Dennis Dodd, even when you know what it is, and you know what the business is 30 Million bucks. So when you talk about it's always about the next guy, Dennis, What about that next guy? For instance, if you had to say right now is Hugh Freeze the next guy there will they be able to look past everything that went down at all, Miss and hire him? Yeah, I think they would. I don't think it would be a question of South Carolina. I mean, if there if you're willing to fire Um Well, much champion eat all that money. You know, you've been given some sort of assurance, or you know, or you're fine with Hugh. Freeze coming, so I don't think that's a problem. I think he's wrestling with it. I think it's really enticing. He's very interested, but he also knows that if he stays another year at Liberty, you know there could be a better job open, and I think he's gone through the car wash enough. You know, you're referring to the N C. A. A Issues of Penn State's and moral foot old mass and some moral failings it on this. I think he's gone through the car wash enough to come out on the other end. A different perception. He's really worried about what Gregg? Thank you will do because you kind of have to get the blessing of the commissioner after NCH sanctions to coach in that league. I don't think purposely. Thank you would stand in the way this time, but I know that you freeze is worried about it. So he's number one in the clubhouse. The clubhouse isn't very big. After that, maybe a guy like billion a beer. It's Louisiana. We're talking to you, Dennis Dodd. Right, Dennis, You've got a piece up on CBS sports dot com. Right now, that's got falling. Headline quote. Hope feels lost at Michigan and 2020 looks to be the end of the road for Jim Harbaugh and quote Michigan's one and three They're coming out that humiliating loss at home to Wisconsin, where they trailed 28 nothing at halftime. How bad was that loss? And how terrible has this season been for Harbaugh and Michigan? Well, that was a new level of low against Michigan that that wasn't losing to your rival. At Ohio State that was getting blown out at home and not showing up. Forget that there's not fans in the stands is not fans in the stands anyway. That's not even an excuse. Michigan should be better than Wisconsin or at least not be down. 22 Nothing your halftime which by the way, is the largest halftime deficit for Michigan in the history of the big house that goes back to 1927 93 years. Then you got a quote. You gotta question the buy in. They want to, and I asked him hardball that question Monday on his zoom call. And you know he didn't answer it directly. He he took off his glasses. Looked into the camera and said, You know, I'm focused. I'm ready. You know, let's just go and but that was a new level of low and it just seems like for all the world Now, after one and three start, we're starts and 67. That there is inevitably going to be a change at Michigan, and then just it just becomes a question of how that happened. I don't think Jim Harbaugh will allow himself to be fired by his alma mater. It's the ultimate Michigan man. I think it will take the form of some sort of mutual agreement or he goes to the NFL or something like that, or without a year, but I don't think it'll be this big, ugly firing, like a will must chance in the middle of the season. I just can't see that happening. Dennis Dodds, my guest. All right. So, Dennis, he This guy was the savior. He is the Oldman, Michigan man. He played quarterback. Terry played quarterback in the NFL. He can't develop quarterbacks. There is no buying from his players. They seemed like they really don't care that much at all. How could this have gone so so wrong for him? What happened to this guy? And that program. If you drop go ahead. I was saying, Dennis, what exactly happened to Harbach? Because he was the savior. He was the Michigan man. He was the guy played quarterback there. He was a guy that had all the answers The big contract all the money. I mean, this was the guy to turn this thing around and it could have gone any worse. Exactly What happened? How did he fail so badly there? Well, he has a coach. He has a shelf life. If you look at his previous jobs, he's kind of a four year guy. You throw that in with the fact that it's now year six. At at Michigan. Yes, He didn't develop quarterbacks, and he came along at a time, Jim. That Ohio State was taking off. You know, it is maybe a case of how schools do each other. I looked it up Michigan since the 1905. Michigan has had won 12 when seas and that was the 97th season. They won the national championship..

"Want an explanation of how this came down, but I've been asked this a lot. I got a t end of the day football. The privilege. It's not a right And if somebody in charge deems it not safe. Then that's the way it's going to have to be now again. I they want an explanation. They should get one how this came down. And what the leadership is there, But the players, right thing Trevor Laurence and everything else. I just shake my head and I say Well, okay, you know, that's great. You've got to believe in somebody. You know whether it's Whether it's somebody or science or something. You've got to believe in somebody, and eventually the people that run this thing are in charge of it, and they've made this decision right along. We're talking to Dennis Dodd. You know, in terms of the decision, there's something else here and you've written about this When we're talking about covert Dennis. It's not just about the virus. It's also about mile card itis mile card itis. The fact that CBS sports reported that at least 15 players in the Big 10 had been diagnosed with it for those who do not know what is mild card itis. And how does that factor in this whole thing? Yeah, that was my reporting. It is an inflammation of the heart that is caused by a virus. Of the common Cold is a virus and I immediately had people say Well, a cold can call that cause this. Yeah, it can. Now let's add Cove it now let's add 120 people in a room. Now, let's add three our football games, people sweating all over each other. How did that work out? It doesn't make it a common a common ailment. I quoted Tom Mars, a player's lawyer out of Atlanta. We've actually had it now He's 61 years old. But his doctor looked at his E K g the other day, and this is from six years ago when he got it. There's a new doctor thought he had just had a heart attack that day, and he said no, that was six years ago and inflammation of the heart. And it has affected and through his life. He was running. Was running 30 Miles a week resting heart rate of 60. And got a cold or a flu or whatever was this came into this is a serious serious things of your administrator. Dealing with 18 to 20 year old 22 year old and this is a thing. I mean, we're a bunch of them have reported. This was a significant factor tipping No tipping the Pac 12 in big 10 towards what they did. It's interesting, isn't it? Because that's a tipping point for those two conferences. Why, then is the SEC? The big 12 the A. C C going the other way, for instance, do they have a higher threshold for that risk? Or are there medical people telling them something else? Do these conferences? Not all have similar information? How could the five of them see it differently? They have similar information, Jim, but to me It's almost like a trial where each side brings, you know experts expert witnesses to a trial to make their point. You can find your so I said this. When this was happening, there will be a conference at the end of this. It will have enough medical experts that will let them have enough information to allow them to play and that's what happened here. I can't explain why why they different. I mean it. Goes with the theme of the whole lost. There's been no leadership. And they think it's good enough to go the guy that's leading the A. C. C. I think it do, doctor their medical advisor. One of them say Absolutely. It's safe enough to play. Really. They just close down North Carolina yesterday and I'm I'm not saying we can't A football. I'm just saying, Think changes from day today and it's like it's like trying to dodge raindrops and hoping the big thunderstorm don't come. We're talking to Dennis Dodd. Dennis mentioned Trevor Laurence and the players like How is the pandemic empowered players and potentially change the power structure in college sports? Well. Hey, it's changed the power structure because they wanted to say in all this Turn it started with we are united and that was over health and welfare. Well that quickly, more thin. Well, we want to play. So, which is you know it can both operate on the same plane and I'm glad they did it. I think it's fantastic. With the end and I'll write that are coming next year, Jim Players or we're going to have unprecedented power and this to the point that they've woken up in general. To the idea that they are not not only the supply, they are the demand, and if they don't take the field, there is no game. The advantage for the administrators is always wow. These guys are just passed. A change of a year. They change every two years. Three years, four years. There's no unity will now there's unity. And even though you know travel, Laurence may have played his last college football games. This is going to endure and part of the reason These administrators are scared, witless about playing next spring because that means two seasons in one calendar year. There's a lot of them that are afraid. That will be the straw that organized these players. You know if we're going to do this, we're gonna have a seat at the table and I don't know if I disagree with him. I think they're right. Sure, Dennis dot is joining us for a few more moments, Dennis, let me change up on you. And I know I can Because back in the day when you were a Panelist on my daily TV show, you're always going to talk about different things different sports. I want to check in with you on this. What was your reaction? To the Rangers getting all worked up about Fernando Totti's junior, hitting a grand slam on a 30 pitch with a seven run lead late. Yeah, that down. I know you're tensions for talking about the unwritten rules of baseball. I had never heard that one. Dad. If a pitcher throws up cookie with on three, you know, in the eighth inning up by seven. You take it. And your coach gives you that takes sign. I mean, what do you know what? I've never seen that unwritten or written rules and for a guy as exciting Fernando Teddy Jr. You know, muffle him like that is is ridiculous. I I I didn't get it. You know what's next? We're gonna You know what? What's a safe count two and 12 and two. You shouldn't twin. Even Johnny bench for God's sake, Johnny Bench got on Twitter yesterday and defended him. Johnny Bench is telling you, It's okay to swing on three. You know, in that situation, I'm good with it. I think the biggest shock of all is that Johnny Bench is on Twitter. I didn't even know that right? What's his instagram feed look like is Johnny bench talking with a blue jacket? I had Teo. It's got to be him. I mean, so theater today what should be more important to baseball. Dennis, the Almighty, antiquated code or the fact that Fernando Totti's junior is an incredibly exciting talent. Right. Why does this guy have his own commercial? I mean, name a product. I don't know already. I mean, that's been based on paint. Yeah, it's It's the problem with baseball throughout the years, they don't you know properly. Publicized their stars think Bryce Harper is a couple of commercials that this kid should be everywhere right now, And he is the most exciting player maybe in sports at the.

We're joined right now by a national college football writer for CBS sports dot com. He is a very good friend of the program. He is a hobby years enthusiast. We all are. He is Dennis Dodd. Dennis before we get into everything that's happening around college football. Bring me up today. Dennis, How are you and everybody around you doing right now? Jim, Thanks so much. Everybody safe, just hunker down at home waiting for you. Football season, which I just discovered is 15 days away, Suddenness Southern at South Alabama at Southern this if we get that far will play football. It is really something, isn't it? Dennis Dog joining us, all right, So I want to get into the individual conferences and then the ripple effects of postponing seasons. But how would you describe 15? Days out? How would you describe the overall state of college football right now? In the middle of August? Oh, God fractured a lack of leadership. You know to the players? Certainly, you know some of the players depressing. And you know, has exposed itself. But what we all thought this wass as much as they want to talk about student athlete welfare. With virtually no one else playing football on a college level. If it's the money, grand. I mean, I'm not pronouncing sentence on it. I'm just You know, I was someone of substance would just say, you know they need a portion of those TV revenues. To make themselves whole or there'll be a lot of It'll be. A lot of athletic department has ceased to be not not just football programs. We're talking to Dana's daughter. I'm going back to that a minute, Dennis the fact that the money is the thing, of course. But let me ask you about Big 10, like the big 10 has taken a lot of heat for the way it handled its decision to postpone the fall season. What do you make of how that's played out for that conference? Well, not well, You know, it's one thing to make the decision not to play in the fall. That's that's fine. But then no information on why? You know you have a group of parents now. Headed to Rosemont, Illinois, have peaceful protests in front of Big 10 headquarters, asking for information. From the commissioner Kevin Warning, So I don't think it's spoken publicly since they postponed Last week and explained why multiple administrators Saying that we don't even know if there was a vote to cancel this thing which I think is really, really concerning. But that really is a concern in the big 10. You have players. No, it's just in fields had that And that move on dot org's petition that gained 250,000 signatures and Jim Frankly, it's a look that is unbecoming to the Big 10. It's always been the buttoned up classy. No. Student athletes conference. That one that did it the right way that won championships and it seems a bit of disarray. Right now. We're talking to Dennis Dodd. You know, Dennis, the point just made like Penn State, for instance. Even their 80 said that she was not sure. That there was an official vote to postpone the fall season. I mean, what do you make of that? How is that even possible? Well again. There's a couple things here. You've got to make sure when you come out of that room, Whatever you decide, however, you decided it. Guys and women. We are going to be united. This is going to be unanimous when we walk out of this room. I know some of us don't agree, but we're gonna put a public face on. This is how we operate. That's our veterans. Administrator work and it's happened multiple times. It's happened in the big 10 and other complexes before we don't air our dirty laundry immediately after the announcement came yet, Scott thought, saying, We're going to look at options to play this season. Ohio State, Michigan State Michigan. Had coaches or administrators say things and I just never seen anything like it. Again, the buttoned up big 10. You know, there wasn't a clear message there as to how we're going to do it so clearly, that league has fractured and disagrees on playing in the spring. I don't think they can go back now, but it's just It's something you don't expect in the big dance finish that thought because I was going to ask you that next. Can they go back? Is there any scenario in which the big 10 actually were to reverse his decision and play this fall? James Franklin was asked that this morning on a zoom call where he was very critical of the process. But he also he did at because I don't think we're going back to the fall. You know? I think if people agree within the parents that are protesting this, don't But I don't think you could go back once you've made this it is that that in itself, then looks almost hit the critical if it wasn't safe enough. Our players last week. How is it all of the sudden? Safe enough players now? Is there a leadership vacuum? Yes, they not explained himself. Fully? Absolutely not. But I don't think you can pull back and now goes to Paul. Dennis Dodd is joining us once again, Dennis, You mentioned the parents of the players a couple of times. So let me ask you some of the heat is coming from the parents who want their kids to be allowed to play. How would you summarize their arguments for wanting the games to go ahead? Um, that well, typically, you know, you know the players want to play, you know, breaking news. Who doesn't? You know I get that they all want to play that. The parents want them to play. They want an explanation of how this came down, but I've been asked this a lot. I got a t end of the day football. The privilege. It's not a right And if somebody in charge deems it not safe. Then that's the way it's going to have to be now again. They want an explanation. They should get one how this came down. "We don't even know if you can get this again. So if you go out and knowingly allow athletes to be exposed, you might kill him. Starters. Um, we don't even know what the infection rate or exposure rate is before someone would even get her immunity for the measles. It was 94%. And we knew if that happened, you'd get at once. Immune to it way Don't you get a second or third time? I talked to that same doctor doctor who had it march and had a really, really bad You can't go upstairs without shortness of breath, and he doesn't know that split in it or not, he said. This thing runs through all your organs when you get it, so deal with it better than others. I didn't deal with it well with on the edge of being hospitalized, so to say, and I heard this I heard on radio shows or something you know, could cleanse and knowingly exposed these, But of course not. They didn't. I would never say they did. But if there's this mindset that it, Yeah, that it's happening now that there are gonna be immune. That is misguided because that's a micro population. We're talking about four to be a saying toe work in the general population, and we don't even know that yet. So Dennis Thie idea that that this is on the brink, and let's say it doesn't happen if there is no season. We know that school by school, that can mean very different things, not only for the football program other programs as well Conference by conference, this is This is very different. What happens if there is no season? What's the fallout? I don't need a nuclear winter. I'm convinced now that there will be programs that give up college athletics. There will be college is closed and look, we're talking about 1100 looking about 1100 schools. I'm not talking about Ohio State or USC, Ohio or Texas necessarily, but I think it will have such a profound Logic impacting you are already seeing in little ways. Every day, there's announced that somebody's getting something because football provides 80% of the athletic budget and even know an athletic budget maybe a count to 10%. Of any schools overall budget. It has a much more impact in marketing and branding and no attracting students to that college. I could be on here to the next half hour talking about what Nick's done for Alabama, so I think I call it the You know the new reset its a new reckoning of college athletics, which we're going to see either way. What are we for sport months down the line, and we're at this point that everything's going to change. A lot of things are going to change that. There's no ball. A and I don't know. I don't. Frankly, I don't know why we needed India because if we don't have any ball, we're going to have a tournament for the second straight year. That's in March and were less than 8.5. So I don't know what's going to look like anything like it is now. If there is spring football if they played in the spring, Tio what level does that save all of this? I don't get it, They'll get a percentage of the money. They would have gotten, um, head. They played a normal season. I don't know what that number is, but I think one of the biggest issues now is that there's gonna have to be a discussion between the conferences. And the TV rights holders as to what they're going to get, because it's not going to be the same. You have to remember all the dates or caused out advanced Thursday night Games game planes on Saturday Axon exposure. Look, they're gonna look like in the bottom line for ESPN or any network that has football. Well, you're in the spring going up against you know if you're going to play an H l n b a golf, uh, baseball. You know, For starters, you're going tohave going up against parading should be fighting for Angel. I know that's how scraps right now. But all those those contracts in those payouts and have to be re negotiated less, uh, for what they were getting in Atlanta economic impact. Dennis. Wonderful to have you. I know there were. That wasn't a very rosy picture, but it's but it's a real one. And thank you for paid that man. I appreciate your time. Optimistic. I appreciate a month. Yeah, well, I mean, what's really is what's really, But thanks very much. Dennis Dodd, CBS joining us this afternoon with the latest on on college sports college football, namely, Look all of this stuff. The message I continue to have is September September. I know there are planning items that need to be in place. So if it needs to be moved, I totally get it And we're at a very concerning time right now. With regard to the spike, But that said, I have no idea what's happening in in September October beyond if we get to the point, though. Where these universities were looking at it and they're going We just can't. We can't do this. We can't do this in good conscience. Or health officials are telling us to bad. Political leaders. Air saying No, can't do it. Well, why not in the spring? Why not? I mean, Larry Scott, commissioner of the Pac 12 couple of days ago, called it a last resort. But as I said last night, last resorts a heck of a lot better than no resort at all. So There's that but on the other side to it, while I hope that college football holds onto the fall possibilities as long as they're there, they are dwindling, but as long as they're there Hang on to him. But if not what is so bad about the spring? College football together for spring practices in spring games already, anyway, Um and I keep looking at sports like this, And I wonder if if.

Yeah, I've seen in a while. Yeah, it it's it's been a little bit. But I still read your stuff and read something this week that I thought was compelling and wanted to have you on to talk about it, which is about this kind of, change of trend in non-conference scheduling among power five teams. I think we have mostly enjoyed these big neutral site games in the first couple of weeks of the season. We've gotten some great matchups over the years. But a lot of us if really lamented, the disappearance of these home and homes, we've seen a few of them lately. I mean, we saw Georgia up in south bend a couple years ago, Irish returning the trip this year, and it's, it's awesome to see certain helmets. You know uniforms trot out on the field. You're not used to seeing them on. That's part of the you know, the pageantry of college football. And we're starting to see in some of these recent announcements return to that with home and home series. And you kind of dug into the reason why. Why? And that's what I want you to kind of lay out for us. Why are we seeing more big time teams announce home and home series with each other? Yeah. It's really key to side, it, I think with certain legacy programs. You mentioned you know, the chant champion school, so the championship legacy what whatever that number is top ten twenty thirty key more value in scheduling out the home and homes that can help them not only with annual giving with student attendance with attendance in general, as well as the supposed presumed expansion of the playoff bracket.

We're coming right back. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Dennis Dodd from CBS sports. Joining us we've been talking about Mizzou and the bowl band. Now. What about Mizzou and fending off friends from the SEC what's going on here. Dennis Dodd joining us with the story. Dennis thanks for the time. Great to have you on and tell us more because. It's not unusual for outsiders to come in and poach people within the family. What's happening here? Yeah. No. I just kinda just happened. "One two four CBS if you would like to get in on the show. My name is Sean Pendergast good to be with all of you on a Sunday evening. Still a lot to dig into break spin an eventful evening. It's always set up that way when you got playoff football going on on Saturday and Sunday. So phone lines are open to talk about the wild card round games. Look ahead to the divisional round games, gut feel on some of those. We can talk about which of the I've my question for tonight is in which the wild card winners this weekend. Dallas indie. The chargers in the eagles. Do you see pulling off an upset next week, which one is most likely bet your life on one of them who would it be eight five five four CBS? Tom dibitetto fired in Minnesota. We're talking about maybe a year and a half ago where that was viewed as a team that was finally gotten the core in place that they wanted a big man of Karl Anthony towns wings quality wings, all star wings, Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins and Wiggins not an all star yet. But a really good player. Gotta give a max deal to Jeff Teague solid point guard, and and now Tom fitted gone, he's fired wonder how much of it had to do with his handling of the Jimmy Butler situation. We we can talk about that Bryan dealt salary will join me in the final hour of the program in about oh about forty minutes from now, and we can talk about that. But as promise joining me on the show right now, he covers college football for CBS, sports dot com and has done. So for a long time, very very well college football playoff title game is tomorrow night, and Santa Clara. We'll talk about that some of these head coaching changes and a whole lot more Dennis Dodd at Dennis Dodd CBS on Twitter. Dennis Dodd joining me on the program right now. Dennis happy new year. How are you? I'm great. Thank you. It's good to have you on the show. Dennis before we get into the game tomorrow. I'm looking at a piece that that you just put up about three hours ago. That's really interesting about the college football playoff itself. And the headline is big ten advocated for review of the college football playoff protocol as early as a year ago. So give us the kind of net net on this. When you say that the big ten advocated for review of the college football playoff protocol. This doesn't sound like it's necessarily the big ten pining for a bigger playoff. But just that the playoff be looked at in a in a way that that they feel is more fair. Yeah. I mean, it's not it's not an application for expansion at all. In fact, the big ten is against that. Philosophically this your stuff tails off I guess the last month a lot of speculation about expanding the brackets all the commissioners are going to be tomorrow here in San Jose. And that's not going to be it may be an agenda item. Amac wanted to act on it more to Jim Delaney's, I guess opinion or urging that they look into again the protocol so four bullet point you can look it up on the internet. How teams are supposed to be evaluated head to head championships. One, you know, stuff like that look at the other two, but. It's all those back to the big ten champion being less out the last three years and. Jim Delaney wanting to know should there be more weight given to conference champion? I don't know how there can. Because this case if he did that this year, Ohio State with the end and then beat Notre Dame with the out. So it's really kind of a catch twenty two saying look he's asking for a review of a protocol that he and the other ten at the commissioners wrote and oversaw. So I don't you know, it's not like. Basically checking your own works. Right. This is like in the NFL when people appeal suspensions, and they appeal to Roger Goodell who gave this suspension down in the first place. You're right. They're they're checking their own work. How big a sticking point Dennis is it with these the conference commissioners in the powers that be the schedule, you know, that in the SEC in the ACC, there's only eight conference games. Whereas in the other power five conferences, they play nine conference games. How big a sticking point is that. And is there any way to get around? That bothers a lot of people. But it's absolutely not going to change either. You have to understand either ten little fight them. To compensate, especially the they all do things at different way. They definitely don't want to be told to do it the same way because the scheduling philosophy in the ACC is different to the one the big ten which is different than the one in the SEC. So they can complain about it all they want. Why in heaven's name with the SEC had accomplished game? One eight nine of the last twelve national championships. Federal only put their teams more at risk to lose a game be dropped out of playoff consideration. Just for one example, it takes I think about six years for an SEC team to play all the teams in its league fourteen. The big the big twelve to every year. You could see the problems here in the inequities. I don't think it's solvable by this there, there's probably this thing is probably going to go through the last seven years of the contract with fourteen. Tweak it in the middle of this thing. Like you're trying to do now. Dennis Dodd CBS, sports dot com. Joining me talking college football Dennis you mentioned Notre Dame. And they of course made the playoffs this year undefeated regular season. They don't they're not in a conference. They don't play in a conference title game. Any talk about a conference title and being part of the protocol. Notre Dame's on sort of a different island than everybody else. What's your sense on on Notre Dame? Like how much resentment is? There may be over. The fact they don't play in a conference play in a conference title game. And does that status for them, especially in light of how poorly they played when they've been on big stages like they did a week or so ago are they in any jeopardy here of their independent status hurting them at all? No, what's again, the people that wrote these rules from this protocol wrote it Notre Dame in mind. Welcome Notre Dame. You can't have a legitimate playoffs. Day. Now, you know, you you could talk about them joining a conference record on Twitter and making them. Question is a Roman put a gun to their head now. Born to happen. If you're going to have this playoff. You're going to have to have Notre Dame part of. For better or worse. Will they join a conference maybe someday? But I think the the deal with NBC goes through twenty thirty five or something like that. And they're buying those games. Finding buying Notre Dame scheduling brand. So no, it wasn't an issue until this year when they didn't have that. So data point obviously, the downside for Notre Dame, basically with thirteen point or conference. They basically have to win every game. Losing your out? We saw that late in the season. They lost USC. They probably would have been out of the top four. So there's a little bit of that. There's a lot of a lot of us. Come into no doubt before we get into the college football playoff title game. What did you think of the Dana Holger Sohn higher? You've h. Good. You know, I I guess Houston is trying to hold onto these Jews or trying to stay in some sort of discussion for joining a power five conference. But it's not going to happen. They got a sugar daddy. Titas Landry's restaurant group who throws good money after bad to his credit trying to keep his alma mater relevant. You know, getting paid three point seven million dollars with the PA getting out of town headed of posse of West Virginia. One question. What are you taking two point seven? I think you would have. That's the way they roll right now. Houston is a good coast. It'll be very offensive entertaining to watch. But Houston isn't going anywhere to a major conference anytime soon. Dennis Dodd joining me on the program identifies college football playoff title game before you get into the match up in who you think's gonna win this thing. The ticket prices had been a big story for this. I'm assuming are you in Santa Clara right now. Are you in California right now for the San San Jose about four miles away? But you're covering the game out there, obviously. So the is the the buzz locally out there does that mirror. What we're hearing about ticket prices just plummeting through the floor on this thing. Yeah. It just doesn't fit. I'm looking at my window. So I guess green space in the middle of downtown, San Jose. And it was supposed to be a big fan says it's raining, and there's nobody there. There's no buzz about the game. There's a party tonight. Back to just grabs the area. It's such a disjointed area. San Francisco's about forty five miles north between. You've got Santa Clara. If anything this region likes pro football, California, at least in northern California. College football. But look they bid on whether runs you know, that tourism board or convention euro bid on the game. And they won the bid not their fault. The two teams from the southeastern coming here. And that's the reason why just take. What do you think about the match up in this game? Obviously, Clemson and Alabama. They've they've met four times this'll be the fourth time in a row now that they've met the first time that we've seen Trevor Lawrence go against this Alabama defense. What do you think the key matchups are in this game? Well, gosh, we're talking about it for days. I think there are several. Alabama's going to slow down. Travis h he had to try to put it on Trevor Lawrence's shoulders. I you know, I I guess we'll see see becomes the second quarterback freshman quarterback ever to start and finish a game for national champion hasn't been done since nineteen eighty five. I think they feel pretty good about trying to do that. Alabama's secondary is underrated. They ever number three in passes defended this year eighty five. I think a key. That is Clemson is tied for fourth in the country of of long game pass forty yards or more than eleven several laws. We saw over the topic of Dame last week. But Alabama surprisingly good against that. They've only allowed. I think six game to forty yards through the air. It hasn't been the discussion about Alabama at all this year. It's been the best quarterback that they've had the best set of receivers. Eight had probably the best offense. Changing philosophies in midstream to accommodate to go off in RPO's. It's I I compare it to Tiger Woods tearing down a swing at the top of the game earlier in the century in itself. It's exactly what job. So I think that's one of the matchups. Clemson's do sets of line. They talked about putting too and a phone with just gonna have to be a really small kid has more mobility than maybe anybody I've ever seen. Carla Murray, that'd be great. I think they'll run more established to run against that defense because it helps them dropping back as as I. For three hundred yards. Because I think they'll make him more. Interesting. Dennis Dodd thrown out, the prophet there. I liked that prediction on the game. Dennis. Oh, yeah. I think Alabama win. It's a five and a half points. Like you like clemson's with the point match. Bats go down late in the fourth quarter navy a field goal game. Which would be really interesting because near these dangerous for very good at kicking field. That could be weird that that's a great point. Yeah. On the heels of an NFC wildcard game where we just saw the upright in the crossbar that would be something else. The national championship game coming down to Dennis Dodd at Dennis Dodd CBS. Give him a follow on Twitter, especially with the the national championship game coming up tomorrow. Dennis really appreciate you making time, man. Thank you, very much happy new year old to do it again with you. There. It is Dennis Dodd appreciate him joining he's been doing it a dentist dot he does a great job for CBS sports dot com. Good stuff. I'm I'm excited for the game. Tomorrow, I do have a little bit of Clemson and Bama fatigue. But the Trevor Lawrence thing intrigues me I'll say that we know Kelly. Bryant was just overmatched. Shawn watson. I, you know. I don't know that anybody's gonna write a better story of going against Nick Sabin in Alabama. I don't think any opposing players going to write a better story than to Shawn Watson did a couple of years ago where he took Bama down to the wire had maybe the greatest individual game ever against Alabama up to that point and lost. And then comes back the following year and beats them on a late. Touchdown drives them down the field making play after play after play throw after throw after throw. But I am intrigued to see Trevor Lawrence a true freshman, go up against Nick Sabin in Alabama should be fun..
