"Dave lowy of the dead daisies and he trunk here with you. Dave lowy now of the dead daisies. I gave you the back story at the top of the podcast. Lowey is a real interesting guy. He is way committed to rock music despite being an extraordinarily successful businessman. First time i've ever had a chance to visit with him and talk with him. Here's how that conversation went dave. Thanks so much for doing this. I thought it was personal. All these years he just never never up never had the opportunity. But it's great to be on. Your show is great to meet you at least over the phone. And as i said i think pretty much since day. One all the guys from your band in the various lineups have been in the studio. We had doug and And glenn on recently for the new album which is just phenomenal by the way and i always wanted to get the story of the banned from you the guy who created this whole thing. So why don't we just dive in there We know that you and your family are successful in the world of business but where does your music. History come from well. I play piano as a kid. My mother was a pianist and I played piano as a kid then. Always wanted to play in the iraq roll band played. I had a garage band teenager just for a couple of us bass guitar. And then i stopped and You know i went to. I was sort of pointed in another direction and Went to university. Studied finance work in business for a long period of time. But i never lost my passion To play music and I picked it up again about twenty years ago so that's really. That's really how i got into it I never liked the passion. Go But i didn't have the I didn't have the time nor the opportunity that the business environment i was working in i worked in the very large public company and I just. I just couldn't put it together to to play music and i I left I left working in large company in about Two thousand and did something different for a living. But that gave me the opportunity to also to my One one of my passions which is which is playing atop playing welcome role and writing and performing. Well so dave. Avi people probably tell from the accent. You're australian and you grew up there in that is. Is that still where you live. Is that still your primary home. No i live in new york up in living in new york for number of years now and in fact i did start my business career in the united states We business serving finished university Like actually lived in southern connecticut for for a number of years. But the last number of us. I've been based Five six years based in new york. And that's where i live now. But he's kind about you know was was never. It was never a great plan it was. It's just sort of all happened. was playing Started playing cover bands and around two thousand and I had the chance opportunity to mate Well nine australian rules football icon from a bank the angels. His name was duck mason that they had some limited success in the under the night anxious city but i ended up with with talk And we put a band together and and wrote an album together and unfortunately he wasn't well and he he he actually passed away not that long ago but that That really got me. The taste for You know wanting to continue and It was always looking for something else to do. After that. And i did actually start another band in about two thousand and six called mink Which was with one of the singers that was involved in the rockstar and excess program. Neil calls and one of the run up when they were looking for a new singer for in excess and we put something together to the now They had some very modest success. But then the financial crisis of two thousand nighttime. About and i had to talk with someone on on my day. Job and Didn't actually play music. For for for a couple of used to that financial coursework through and then i had a chance meeting With with the governor. John stevens in australia who also played in He actually senior for an existing off. Michael hutchence died and He's not well known outside of strategy but he's unbelievable talent and we were introduced to each other and i was looking for something else something new music and we sat down together for five days in one place and twenty five songs thirty songs. I think and we say well. Let's let's record this. We didn't have a band. It was just the two of us and John had a friend in alight record with before john fields disease nine and we went to joan field studio in somewhere in hollywood and we recorded the first album. Just the human eye and and some Concession guys That was in october. Two thousand twelve and we came back to australia and still you know we really lock these songs. You wanna plasma live. Let's put a band together. So that was the. That was the genesis salvage. There was never any grand plan. John introduced by actually out the david with two managers. That there is. He's now and that's where it'll start. Dave can you tell the audience. You know as well as i do when it comes to your band the dead daisies and there's a lot i wanna talk to you about the band and the music as well but when people talk about it and you've mentioned the business and that you are businessmen and quite successful but can you can you elaborate and clarify that a bit as to exactly what your business is. I if you don't mind. Is it real estate or what. What exactly is the the main business that.

"But but the idea is. Check your rock stations. If i don't just mean what you listen to. I'm talking about these stations brought music. That's not like music to me dennis. I only got a couple of minutes here because we got a lot going on today. But i want to ask you two quick things. First of all speaking of your record and again twenty-six east volume to the dentist is talking about is out on friday. But i want to ask you about A song that is to this is your last studio record. And what a what. A wonderful way to end it then with the song. That's called the grand finale which obviously is a nod to your sticks history and the grand illusion. Talk a little bit about wrapping up the record and your recorded career. Essentially with that song as the final moment well i wrote. Sung-chol eyelid love misanthrope. Which is one of the top songs on the album. And i was done with it on my prior album. I ended with a thing called eighty nine hundred fifty eight which is the way paradise theatre ended by essentially saying goodbye and then i wanted another album. I thought wait a minute. Just said goodbye so I thought well. I'm gonna do this song. I haven't missed it through and it's going to trans transition right into the grand finale which to me is you know. It doesn't get much better than six music than the than the grand delusion. It is our best album and the ending. Which is the grants analogy. Is something very special to me. So what i did was. I made it work musically the two songs i love misanthrope and the grandson finale come together now. Nobody's going to be able to hear this until the record comes out because the video doesn't even have that but my son matthew he plays the drums on messenger to the grand finale and the reason that plays drums. He's forty one. He's not a kid is because he he loved jump and iso the sticks drummer and Cannon him at a nice relationship and so matthew decided to use john's right symbol on the less on. And so when you hear the grand finale. The last thing i say is an deep inside. We're all the same. Something i said. In nineteen seventy seven which couldn't be more meaningful than it is today when we lived through the pandemic we suddenly although it hasn't stopped people from acting like assholes. We realized that we are all. We are all victims of our own stupidity and choices. And we're all in this together whether we want to believe it or not and we should stop dividing ourselves into this dog. Mar i had i. The allergy and the most important ideology is do unto others and the the album ends with the grand finale and do the hi c. And i say audio now. That doesn't mean that since they have a studio in my house. That if i write a song that i think someone might like that. I can't just stick it up on the internet someplace. Put it on my facebook page wherever they do these things. I'm seventy four. Do i have to no no. But i'm making no albums because nobody really cares a and b. It's too much work. If i get it song. I like i'll call you. hey. I'm buddies with tom morello dennis last well. Did you track a great way to end the record. I thought it was fantastic. I loved how you wrapped up the record but last thing dennis. We can't let you go without asking you this. I mean you have been open and honest on my show in another place is about your desire to do. One last run with sticks. Has there been any progress in that front of you have any dialogue with the guys. Do you think with sticks fans listening out there. Do you hold out any hope that that could still happen at time. Our dialogue has been mostly in aramaic. Just kidding I through back channels. You know the big the big shots in this country that put up the money to put bans on the road Through those channels The promoters went. And 'cause they know what. It was neat. Eddie you know what would mean to the To the sticks camping only one person. As far i was running one one person spoke was comedy who said no. Thank you I don't know why because one last tour just to say goodbye to all the fans who gave us so much it would be nice to give them back one more look molinari currently in champ. You know what i mean and say. Thanks for the memories kids but I don't hold out a lot of hope but one never knows. Do they any no. You can never say never do anything in this world you never know. So i'm dennis. Look i gotta run. I'm late for a break but it's always great to visit with you. Stay healthy and hopefully you can get out and play some live shows. I know the fans would love to see that. And we remind everybody that twenty-six east volume one. The first part of this record is available now and the second part volume two is dennis. Just said we'll be his final recorded statement that is available everywhere on friday. Take care of yourself all the best to your family. And we'll stay in touch. Okay thanks buddy. Thank you to dennis. Deyoung great visit with him. His new album is out. Now coming up next..

"The universe we live in. Oh did that sound high falutin to be honest. It did well. No no i agree with you. I mean music is the great escape. Absolutely hey i gotta ask you. So you've said this more than once so you said you know about lockdown and all that and the year that we've had and everything and it's been rough on everyone but every day i'm coming on the radio now announcing events concerts tours. There's already stuff happening. I've already been on the road some here in new jersey where we have been fairly locked down. It is wide open and has been for like the last couple of weeks. There's no more mask mandate hear nothing. It sounded to me like where you are. Dennis which is still in the chicago. Area is still pretty restrictive. Are you still are you. Sky still have a lot of restrictions on you there and that are are making not be able to get out and about no my my My restrictions are self imposed. I'm seventy four at I you know. I'm halfway to seventy five and so Ranked now been careful. Because i'm glad everything is opening up. God blessed. I wanna go back on the road i. I'm supposed to tour next year. But what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna be careful. I'm going to see. We're going to open everything up. And i wanna watch and see what happens because you know why any i'm been married to the same woman for fifty one years. I have no alimony payments. So i must be. They've had too many wives or drug problems or gambling. So totally. i tell. I tell my audience all the time they would be shocked at. How many of these. The legendary iconic huge artist absolutely need to go out in the middle of a pandemic. Because you wouldn't believe their overhead. So i totally know what you're talking about in the same boat as you dennis but still. Yeah i mean you know. Some of our friends are not as fortunate as far as the overhead situation of mothers. Don't let your your son grew up to be based players cowboys. make sure they're songwriters that he and rapist. I'm going be on the car. Was senator dick durbin tomorrow. about way musicians are being rate literally and forget about me. Kids ever listening. I made my bill. Thank you to anyone. Who's listening in every bought a dennis deyoung record or a stick sell. You made me and my family comfortable. And i appreciate it to as much as any human being can't but the kids that are that are coming up all these people this one that one especially in rock bands. I can't speak to hip hop artists. I can't speak to the to the popstars pretty popstars. But i know rock band. This is terrible because they have no way to make money so we'll make it on the road now there's a covert you can't make it there and i'll tell you right now you can't go on and do it and play gigs. For the most part you have a record. It's ass backwards eddie. You know what i know. Technology has really made the job of the musicians difficult. And i'm not talking about myself his mailbox money but for all right all the guys in the bass players who never wrote songs even in the biggest bands right now. They have to go out and they have to. They have to get back on the stage in the road and working me here. I'm walking around my house they can. Is this gonna end. Because i want to get out there and play and i plan to do this in february next year but rhino eddie. You know what i'm doing. I'm i have my wife make homemade pizza. And i'm watching netflix. And your cashing your mailbox. Money on all those great songs he wrote that you get the publishing on one hundred percent right. I hear you loud and clear. Let let me ask you about The we had you on for the first twenty six now twenty-six east volume two was. This always planned. I imagine dennis to be a two part double record released separately like this. No every plan. I've ever made eddie blown up in my face. Most of my sister's been stupid luck. I wanna be clear on that. Right now I i wrote a bunch of songs ideas. They told you before the concept behind my first album which is twenty six days was the concept of and it was don't suck that's it. Don't make songs that people say. This old fired should've laid down longtime time ago. And the left us alone so it made the first record. And and miraculously lots of people like it and we recorded and Over eighteen songs to try to narrow it down to get the best ones on one. Then the record company was italian said we wanted. We went all the songs would will make it into two volumes. And i said is they're -talian. You know this company. I said is there any lira involved. They said yeah. We'll double couple of guarantee. Now eddie i was never good at math but i understood that clearly so there are two volumes. That comes out. Friday june eleven already. There are two songs you can just go look on with videos on youtube I look misanthrope. Is one pretty cool video. And there's a second song called the last guitar hero which features camarillo from Report the machine and Those are two see right now and another son will be coming on friday and I people i talked to the last month. And the interviews. Of course we'll say to be either gonna tell me your your music sucks. I don't think so. But everyone. I mean.

"In houston at warehouse live hosting lita ford warrant and bullet boys the twenty sixth i'm in tulsa hosting lead afford at the ideal ballroom tons of other stuff coming up it's all listed on the homepage of eddie. Trunk dot com. But that's the stuff in the immediate future and be sure to follow me on social media at any trunk especially on twitter and instagram. I stop as mentioned dennis. T young formerly of stakes. Here's that conversation on the trunk podcast. Okay we'll spend a few minutes now with the guy that was on with us not too long ago you know him. Best as the former singer and multi instrumentalist really from the ban sticks. It is dennis deyoung joining us. Live right now dennis. How you been my friend. Good eddie and yourself and by way those two girls. Those goals rock. They're both very good. I like both of yeah. They both have some powerhouse voices as well dennis. Do you keep up with a lot of like the more current music scene or do you listen to music and newer bands. You know eddie. I've been recently while. I'm walking and exercising in my house because i'm a prisoner. Who apparently i feel like ted koppel. Dennis young health held hostage day. Four hundred I walked around my house. And so when i do that i go and i go to youtube and i listened all kinds of albums that had never listened to and then i listened to old albums to see if i still like them. So i you know. I don't listen to a ton of new stuff. But i try to keep up and You know so. I know those girls are but for the most part you know. I'm i'm just listening to this stuff. I used to think was great to see if i still think it's great. What what have you heard some things. Some newer bands that have resonated with you. Honestly you know you're in the business of rock and roll. I mean nobody's more deep than it than you. It's here's what radio used to do. Eddie you know this you're in you know you're trying to figure out your life you're clueless like the rest of us and you're driving around in your car and your trains. Am or whatever you had a you know could have been a nineteen eighty two of the nissan for all i know and then some guy on the radio. Play something and you go. What the hell was that and you wait. It tells you right or he doesn't and you wait again. And oh god i love that you run to the record store. Throw down the cash and you take something that you believe for. Make your life better. allow you to understand life. you're leading better for you. Was you know it was jean. Paul wasn't it. That's what yeah kiss my well. Actually i always. I always say kiss. Was the most impactful banned by far from me as a kid and it was my world for for a number of years but i always have to give a nod to a band called the raspberries who were really the first time i heard proper rock music and my first favorite rock band. I love those guys. You know all the way they yeah. They were all the ways great. I love that those guys But you know you you know. Nobody said hey. Eddie's listening to the carpenters. I don't think they said that you heard it and ran out and you got it and you took it home. And it was real. It was something that could hold in your hand and then you put it on and you listen to smell the vinyl. You know that should be a title of an album smell. The vinyl they are directly stonehenge chebbi a fragrance. Really so when you come you get you get a download. The press the button and commuter computer and you smell vinyl anywhere That's what it was about rock music on the damn radio. Now if you're searching up music and you're younger or older you know you go on the internet you gotta look around. You got to type something in and Is this the choices are astronomical. You can't even imagine the choices and so it ends up being like homework homework. Neither did you. The radio was the key and rock. Radio in america is a shambles. I agree i agree dennis. I've said that many times. One of the one of the. I i have a phrase all the time it said one of the one of the good thing is. If you're a musician is that anybody can make music and release it now. The bad thing is if you're a musician anybody can make music. Release it now. You have this unbelievably overcrowded over saturated plot platforms to put out music. So the biggest challenge for fans of any kind of music is finding it and knowing it exists and it's not unfortunately for people like you the artists. It's not even about trying to sell it anymore. That's icing on the cake. Just know it exists in here it. Click on it and hear it. That's what it seems to be about now. I think the whole world is ending. we just have recognised. Yeah i don't mean. I just i look don't you. I mean the last year and a half all of us have gone. What the hell just happened. Honest to god don't you. You must know people. Don't tell me you don't know people that you're you may not speak to not see them again and i'm not talking about they were. They succumb to the cudi. Kuti's nineteen no politics has made people families and friendships end in the last year. Not alone the fact that we're all hiding from From the virus. We don't know what the heck's going on so it's a very confusing time for all of us. You know this eddie. And what is music do for us. I can tell you that lifts us like no other art form. Yeah cannot drove and watch your movie a hundred times. You can't read the same book hundred times but you could listen to one song or an album a hundred times and still not be tired of it. This is the magic of what you have committed your life to and myself. Which is the mystery of music which digs down into us into our soul into our Into our brains and allows us.

"On a daily basis over on sirius. Xm radio and of if you're outside of the us or canada well thank you for listening. And of course you can't get sirius xm outside but Get a good taste of what. I do at least a little little sampling and some great interviews and conversations. Great to bring you to this week. I'm going to be joined by a little later on in the show. A guy by the name of dave. Lowy dave lowy is the mastermind behind the dead daisies. He is a guy that a lot of people have often wondered and questioned and suspected the validity or debated the validity of the dead daisies. Given that it's a band that is basically run by an extraordinarily wealthy businessman. Who hires these ban members to play with him and create records. There are some that have been critical of the band for that reason and others that you know just love the band and don't care about that stuff but what's interesting is the dead daisies had a long history and a lot of different people in the band and i have never once heard an interview with mr lowey. He has never come into. My studio has never been on my show. Although members of the daisies have many many times so this was kind of an exclusive thing and a rare thing for david lowy to take time out to actually tell the real story of the dead daisies his background and story which is quite interesting and of course a little bit about the band and their great new record. Think you're going to really enjoy that conversation. It's not somebody you hear from a lot. And he had some real interesting stories and stuff to tell about his commitment to music and how much he loves it. Despite the fact that as i said he's an extraordinarily successful businessman but we opened the show this week with dennis. Deyoung course the original singer keyboard player and member of sticks. Dennis is one of those rare examples of an artist who is open about wanting to perform again with his former band sticks. Although there's nothing imminent in the cards for that sticks are currently getting ready to go out there and release a new record of their own. They've had a replacement for denis young in the band for the longest time by the name of lawrence gowan they continue on with him and dennis continues to make his own music under his own name. His latest studio record is what he is calling his final record his farewell record if you will. It's called twenty-six east part too and that is out now and we talk about that in a little bit about sticks as well with guns young so we are going to open the show with dennis and we are going to close the show this week with david lowy of the dead daisies one guy. Dentist young if you're a rock fan essentially a household name and dave lowy a guy that is not a household name. But i think you're gonna find a very very interesting conversation. So good double dip for you this week on the eddie trunk podcast. Quick note as appearances. Come rolling in. don't forget that. I will be in mckinney texas. If you're listening to this on post day. Thursday i'm in mckinney texas. This friday the eighteenth doing a qna speaking show break out some old that metal show photos. It's gonna be awesome. Please come on out if you're in the dallas area to the guitar sanctuary this friday june eighteenth if are not in the area and you can't join in person you can purchase a streaming ticket and watch virtually. "Right now, and seeing Ben getting a haircut was enough to get me super excited, but then see him on the field, throwing the ball around in my good Lord. Are you kidding me now? You talked with Ryan Switzer about this workout session first of all. Was this the very first workout session? Ben Hat? Well to this degree was he's been throwing for months. Now you know particularly to Switzer and sort of controlled environment, but rothlisburger wanted to get out there and simulate more of a a real practice where he's running around. Throwing the ball to you know different types of throws different kinds of throws. So this was the first time it got to this degree where he was on the field had the cleaved head. Some of his teammates were basically you know went back and just let it rip and. Oh. Let the ball go and not think about the elbow so. That's what makes it pretty interesting that. It seems like he's on track where they want him to be at this point. I mean it doesn't mean that he didn't wake up the next day and have A. You know a little bit of a soreness in his body or whatnot, but it seemed like He's pretty much on track of where they want him to be right now and on Saturday was just re affirmative. Reformation to him that that elbow is pretty much healed. So this means what's there's going to be on the team. You know. That's funny. Those? Long I mean here. It's like fifteen years age difference between Ben and Switzer, but they have so much stuff in calm, and it just gravitate towards each other, and there could be You know a guy who's on the brink of a roster spot could do worse of of picking some of his people. He hangs around with them. I agree mark look. I I think right. Switzer is about is upstanding of citizen as you could be. I really like him as a person, do I think he's great and I think he stands for great things. I'm not the biggest fan of his on the steelers roster or his his performance output to this point is less than desirable, but hell of a good guy, so we could. We could the little number ten, but here's the thing I wanted to know about the.
