The weight of that moment was not lost on the weekend. And that's where. I wanna start before we get to the actual match itself because again you were on the grounds and i know i saw the number floating out there. Eighty five percent of the capacity of twenty nineteen. That may be true but that final in particular. I mean you go through. It was a. Who's who's you had pit. You had cooper. You had gayle king next to savannah guthrie. Derrick rose joachim noah. That said we had a rowdy environment. We had people booing deniro medvedev as he was serving for the match and just again it felt a little on kosher but we can get to that in a second. What was the vibe. Like in person was it as magnetic. Was it as just again. Electric as it felt on tv. Yeah it was and it started with the matches. Australian open goes fourth round their finals at the us open semi-finals twenty nine thousand nine australian open semi-finals twenty twenty. Us open finals twenty twenty one australian open now back into the semi-finals third consecutive year. Here in new york. You look at the company. He joins by doing that. All of the players on that list won a. Us open at some point in their career. All of them did. that's insane. That's extraordinarily impressive Obviously four Deniro medvedev to have done this and again you look for him. He's still just twenty five years old if you know. He's entering the meat of the prime of his career. You look for neo. Medvedev what he's been able to accomplish on hard courts over the past. I mean you can just go with the past fifty two weeks if you want kind of epitomized how impressive. He has been look for him. A during that timespan. He's fifty eight and fourteen overall for six and seven. Hardcourts is winning. Eighty seven percent of his matches. He's holding serve eighty nine point four percent of the time. That number would be good for fourth. He's breaking serve twenty nine percent of the time that good number would be good for fifth of course across surfaces right. Now it's just he and jovovich who are top ten in both hold percentage and break percentage. He's won four masters titles on hardcourts now in his career as well. And it's just the way he's coasted through these first five victories at the. Us open the set against vendors. Send scope that was the first set he's dropped and that was like the joke vich art. I'm up two sets to love. I just turned tobago. Kind of fell asleep a little bit at the wheel here. But don't worry. I'm gonna get back and end up closing out the match and for that. He closed that match out in four sets. Seven five the way he did when venison scope at found his level. And it was like you know what i'm willing to suffer. I'm just gonna leave the tank on empty. I'm in the quarterfinals. I have matched my career earnings to date in one event. I'm going down swinging credit to him for stepping up his level but then credited deniro manfred f for not letting things get crazy not forcing that fifth set. Because obviously you get to a fifth set particularly with what we've seen at this. Us open Anything can happen. And so you look for neo medvedev again. It's a six three six love. Four six seven five victory for him. He's cashed in on futures..

"Ira tweeted this. Some sort of negative thing from daniel medvedev's lost against andre group of. Oh here's why deniro medvedev is in trouble heading into the us open congratulations. I now take you less seriously. But for andre rupe left you can absolutely you can absolutely take positives and the big positive was. He didn't break down. He didn't just try to hit his way through everything he was patient. He forced medvedev to make tactical adjustments. You just stopped giving medvedev anything. Easy no more unforced. There's he started taking his backhand down the line a little bit more. He started coming to the net a little bit more. Just throwing different looks at medvedev even incorporating some backhand slice because the same patterns they were in rube. Love trying to mock seventeen on four hands with medvedev somehow tracking them all down and then just ripping the passing shot by ru blood in the end. That wasn't working things like the show. I mean it held that rebuffs. First-serve percentage shopped massively sets two and three but just it was more dynamic than just a first forehand from rupa he started. You know crafting points waiting for start. Stop forcing it. On the third forehand he got of the rallying wait until that sixth seventh and eighth forehand to really open up a crack in the court and attack the neo medvedev through that crack arizona. It was a it was a performance. It's funny because i the i don't wanna see narratives because narratives are always arbitrary and there's no real narrative surrounding andrew rube lab this season but forty one and fourteen in twenty twenty. One doesn't feel that way anymore right. It doesn't feel like he's seventy five percent of his matches of late. And yet you look at the actual results was disappointing. Clay court season particularly. But you look elsewhere so we starts out wins. Atp cup with medvedev doesn't lose. In that event quarterfinals he loses medvedev. Australia wins rotterdam semifinals. Doha loses to rb a semifinals. Dubai loses to carrots semifinals. Miami loses to her finals of monte-carlo loses to safety poss- through april. He was one of the best five players in tennis. I think unequivocally no one would have denied that. And you look at the advanced metrics. He's still one of only five players to be top. fifteen in both hold and break percentage for the season. Be look since that april monte-carlo result. I mean the loss is quarterfinals to center in barcelona round of sixteen seven. Six in the third to is ner. That's fine by the way the loss tow center to and six you. He loses three sets to senegal rome. Quarterfinals five sets strew first round roland-garros five sets to future vich fourth-round wimbledon. The is ner lost five and six canada like you lose disner five and six on a hardcourt that happens sometimes when serves well. He makes the semis of that of an rightly made the final. It was clearly conducive to big-serving yes. It wasn't the best run for him. Post monte-carlo to the start of cincy but honestly there haven't been any red flags for andrew blended anything. It's just like okay..

"And i don't say that lightly and then you throw in the fact that he's got one hundred thirty miles per hour serve that the weight of his forehand when he's getting his body behind it his momentum behind it can overwhelm unique and hit it inside out inside in and then he's six foot six he's fluid and he's got a quick. I stab in. Like i know for some reason he doesn't get in the conversation with medvedev's of the world is a mover at that size but i think he's every bit the mover. That deniro medvedev is on a hardcore night. Just think again as a volleyer. He's gotten so much better than since he was younger. He almost knows what he's doing up there now and i actually think his over has always been better than his he hits that shot comfortably. I mean i could rant and rave about alex. The positives of alex verbs game but the key has always been in the biggest moments. He's gotten tentative. And we haven't seen that gear from him since being down set in the break at the olympics where he just started swinging freely from the baseline and of course it's worth noting another two out of three sat result for him but it's also worth noting he's the only guy this season with two masters thousands titles heats now the big four him and his master's thousands finals appearances i on the at currently active on the atp to or there's that stat. He's you know it's another title for him. He moves up in the rankings. Now i believe with this title to number back up to number four in the rankings. It goes jovic medvedev. Ct post of nidal right now. That's where we're at folks by the way you look in the race to the you're on files same deal jovic seats you poss- medvedev zero if you look for zero fourth rounder. Better at last seven majors as well. I talked about this with david kane. I'm gonna talk about it again on the gs. Ps we do previewing the twenty twenty one. Us open at a certain point. There's only one check box love for him to check off. And that's winning grand slam title. Because alex of has done absolutely everything else and we've seen in two out of three set format his best tennis. I don't care. If it's novak djokovic. Particularly this version of novak djokovic brought care for its rafa. i don't care it's federer. I don't care if it's medvedev. Ct poss- any of them. S- best is as good if not better on his best day than any other player on the atp to right now. And i don't say that lightly. But i think with the evidence we've seen whether it's in tokyo here or the western southern open now as well. You'll take a little bit more seriously when i say that fact because again for him. It's always been mental and it's a three out of five set thing as well but do any of us have questions physically than he can withstand the three out of five tasks anymore. I don't it's a mental thing for him. Can he continue to be aggressive in that fifth set because his legs will be there. If this tournament is any indication if the olympics are any indication the answer is yes. And i think if you're novak djokovic you are begging that alex vera is on the other side of the draw from you because a joke of each versus have final totally different match totally different connotation yes joke which will have all the pressures of winning at twenty first encounter grand slam in that final bids. We'll have all the pressures of winning his first grand slam title of being the guy to usurp jovovich on that stage particularly given after joe syrup was two points away from winning the us open.

"Things shouldn't be this stressful as a tennis fan. And yet i imagine you like me have found it difficult to follow. All of the action happening across the various levels in the tennis world. Of course the highlight event right now. The twenty twenty olympics which have reached their home stretch. We have reached the quarterfinal round of the men's singles event the semi final round of the women's singles semi-finals in doubles as. Well everything shaping up to be a very exciting finish of course on the women's side as every high level. Women's singles event has been here over the past. Few seasons upsets have defined the results. We have seen on the men's side. It feels like coronation. Not if but when novak djokovic will capture that elusive gold medal in singles. It's worth noting though. Deniro medvedev alex fear of another strong performance for the two of them at a high level event and certainly look at the players in the field. Even if it is a coronation in the end we should certainly get some fun. Tennis in the build up to that coronation but of course it's not just the olympics. You've got atlanta this week. You've got kids will this week. You've got charleston this week another. Wj event four adp challengers of course countless itf event. You've got it. A summer action happening across the country. You've got kalamazoo in san diego. The boys and girls sixteenth eighteenth national championships. Just around the corner. this is i you know. It's funny i say may is the best time to be attendance fan. You've got the ncaa tournament. And then of course. The french open wimbledon stretch following immediately after that. But you could argue maith through the us open. It is just a event after event this three month. Run my favorite three month run. Of course it's the summer stretch here in north america but a fantastic time as always to be a tennis fan. What i want to do on today's podcast help make things a little less stressful for all of your listeners. Take a note of where we are at are various events happening across the globe. Talk about what you listeners can expect to see over the course of the rest of the week just could be me steering the ship of course but again want to offer a primer on all of this week's action of course. "But give me neil here. I'm but look the big thing. When he was ripping off the win streaks was again he was holding served. Ninety percent of the time a little bit higher he was holding serve at the rate of john is ner and he was breaking serve thirty five percent at the rate of prime rafia. On the dollar and prime djokovic again he broke the numbers. Mathematically heading into that australian open final and then he blinked and like. There's no denying all of us saw that match and we thought he's not ready because if he couldn't beat that joke which wednesay going to do it and i do think on his head a little bit like tennis players get in their own heads. There's no denying that. And yet i mean by every metric. He beat paul today zero four-shot rallies he wants sixty six of tommy. Paul one forty three. And that's because he just throws you. He is getting that return. Pass the service line. He's getting a deep at your feet and you're not gonna have plus one opportunities against him and you know again in today's match. He did serve. Like john is ner he only made fifty six percent of his first serves but he won eighty percent of those first-serve points. When you're forty fifty on your first serve points. You're having a successful day at the office. Thirty wins against thirty. Two and four stairs isn't great. But tommy didn't have the overwhelming weapon to beat them and i think medvedev in that first set kind of locked in and you saw it in the five three service game for paul which paul was credit to him that he ended up holding. They're getting that. I set but bev extended those rallies ten fifteen shots and just was like i'm not going anywhere and if you hit the winner down the line and set up a drop volley for yourself. Bravo my friend. You just beat me. But that's what you have to do. You have to go out there and beat new medvedev into your credit. You've been on this since the beginning. That's a really hard thing to do particularly in a three hour. Five set format yet spot on because medvedev in the first set was looking to horse points. Yeah exactly. He was forcing things and he forgot. Offense is going to be hard. This is clay. When you get onto the slick indoor courts of we'll actually shang. i was gonna say shanghai. But that's outside isn't it feels inside when you get on those very medvedev ian courts that are really quick and the ball barely bounces. Deal can generate offense really easily. Yeah good luck is right. I mean he's won every single tournament in the entire stretch from the us open to the world tour finals but on clay. He's gonna have to just real back and it's going to be hard work for them but we we also we've seen him do that hard work particularly in twenty nineteen where it's like my god. Does this guy have a long or is he. A robot is cardio is insane. He needs to bring that version of neil medvedev to a clay court as soon as he flipped that switch. It was very very difficult on. Tommy no you know what they say. The more your hairline has receded. The better your cardio. I can firsthand experience. Therein deniro medvedev's too bad haircuts away from shaven that bad boy. I clear my thing. I always say my vision. I can envision that oh no the full squidward look. That'd be great for him. And like i said it when he doesn't i do it so anyways tangent for all of you on the side but no i mean yes i would echo all of your points and again is his plan a as on clay courts in particular as sexy as a c. Pastas sexy as a rude..

Ninety percent eighty percent neil medvedev Paul thirty five percent fifty six percent thirty paul today Tommy Two Five set three hour john first serves ten fifteen shots first set forty fifty neil four
