Nancy Pelosi defies Trump by leading pro-Nato delegation on Brussels trip

"The senior US Democrat Nancy Pelosi gave a surprise news conference that the NATO headquarters in Brussels yesterday, the speaker of the house of representatives going to exit Donald Trump by saying that the US remains fully committed to the transatlantic relationship. Let's get more on this weird for retired British General, Sir. Simon male Siamese regular contributor here on monocle twenty four and he joins me in the studio. Welcome to the broker good. You I tell us more about the message Nancy Pelosi was sending to other NATO countries. Will I think she said today encouraging message I was listening to her her news news conference, and as you quite rightly pointed out, this was a ten percent of the Senate or the congress had come over for the Munich security conference, which is which is a huge a huge demonstration affirmation of the strength of the transatlantic link. And as you said, it is not a bipartisan issue, Republicans and Democrats absolutely United in sharing the values of the of the transatlantic link respect for the European Union. But a huge understanding that NATO remains absolutely central to all values and offering an absolutely central to America's sense of its own leadership role and security, well, Shona she wasn't speaking on behalf of president's Donald Trump. Well, I think I think don't the way Donald Trump says things can often lead to misinterpreted, and and a deep beyond helpful. But some of the things that Donald Trump has said, I think absolutely carry weight, which is that the Europeans have taken a huge peace dividend since the end of the Cold War. And although the security situation has changed dramatically. Sadly, even in Europe with the with the sort of revulsion of Russia. The Europeans have not responded to that by matching there. Their own defense spending, and it some and I think he reflects eight an irritation by the American taxpayer and voter the the Europeans don't appear to have so much stake in their defenses the Americans do so the two messages do need to be dovetailed. But I was very encouraged other the legislature of the United States was so forthright about about its commitment to the NATO line send the transatlantic link topic of Bobby offer relief is this message for say European NATO partners. Well, it should be a relief. But what it shouldn't do is allow them to, you know, just an excuse to go back to what I would call normal jogging. I genuinely think the Germans have been really quite agree GIS in, you know, the the the importance of European security to their own prosperity and safety the amount that they've managed to build a highly successful economy in society, really on the on the back of the American security guarantees, and I think, you know, security does cut both ways. America has a leadership role. It is the price you pay leadership, but we should all be lean in a little bit more. We are matching the warm words of policy and her bipartisan team and meeting. Some of the justifiable criticism of Trump, even they often coached in rather. Abrasive terms so issue over money does remain. And it sounds like you think it has to be interest at some point. I think it does have to be addressed. I think you know, if we've got serious politicians who are statesman as well states women, as well, we have a genuine threat, we have a range of threats which are not as Nancy Pelosi said BI polar they are cyber they are human trafficking in they'll the external borders of of of of Europe, we have built ourselves very, comfortable, welfare state and hell serves all the way across western Europe.

"Is Bloomberg business flash. Where it's seventeen past the hour. Let's get you caught up on the markets earlier in the day here in the US. We had the comments from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, he thought the US and China were making a lot of progress when it came to trade, and he did say the currency issues are on the agenda next week Vice Premier Li her will be in Washington speaking with secretary Mnuchin on the trade front, see if we can get something terms of a framework at least laid out. So the markets can breathe a sigh of relief right now. In the Tokyo session. Nikkei higher by one half of one percent. A little bit of weakness in the yen vis-a-vis the dollar here at one oh nine seventy in Seoul, the kospi better by about one half of one percent. And in Sydney, the sex two hundred is up about one half of one percent as well. Philadelphia semiconductor index is up about six percent during the new year. Accessions Zeilinger jumped eighteen percent after reporting record revenue company makes out logic chips for five G networks, but after the bell the behemoth Intel top and bottom line both missed stock was down more than seven percent at the end of late US trading on the positive side, though, we had Starbucks shares picking up about two percent in late US trading. Quarterly results were above estimates. Seems as though Chinese same store sales were up about one percent for the fiscal second quarter. That was good enough to satisfy the appetite for those of you that like Starbucks on the equity side, I'm talking US tenure treasury in the Tokyo session to seventy one in yield. Let's get to San Francisco at Baxter's got global news from the Bloomberg nine sixty newsroom. Ed. All right. Douglas. Thank you very much the two bills. Both bills to end the US government shutdown failed in the Senate today for the negotiations are on the president says he could accept a pro rated payment on a wall. But at a wall has to be part of any agreement. The US has ordered non-emergency government employees out of Japanese whalers say they will form a fleet of at least five vessels to resume commercial whale hunting, July. First Singapore's property market is seeing an unprecedented at mortgage, slow down interest rates and property curbs. Putting the brakes on P Jeannie has been cleared in the California probe on the cause of the 2017 wine country fire saying it was not PG knee who owned the equipment North Korea's Kim Jong UN has ordered preparations for a second summit with Donald Trump US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross is trying to clarify his comments that government workers should be able to get a loan to cover their expenses rather than going to food banks. He says he was just trying to tell them that the option was there then presidential advisor Larry cudlow asked. If he was out of touch saying, it's just a momentary glitch Democrat Nancy Pelosi Pelosi calls them, let them eat cake moments. Global news twenty four hours a day on Aaron a tick tock on Twitter power by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg Paul. All right. Thanks very much joined this half hour by Patrick Giovanna keys, managing director and chief strategist at Silvercrest asset management. Now, we just talking there about the latest developments on the shutdown much like the trade war looks fairly intractable as well. It's very political. Now neither side wanted to give the other a win on the walls. So how does this one get resolved? I don't know how it gets resolved. I don't think anybody in Washington does at this point either initially L from a market and economic point of view, initially, my advice was that like in previous shutdowns that the impact the economic impact tends to be minimal, and and transient in the sense that you get a few points shaved off from people pulling back consumers playing back in not spending as much, but then then you get a bounce back when everybody gets paid. But the longer this goes on the more serious, it is and the more serious impact. And especially if you get disruptive events like say if security people are air traffic controllers walked off the job and cause real disruption. Then you start to have really can I make impact that you know, you don't necessarily get back. And and I think that we're moving more and more towards that without any real clear vision of how to avoid it. So what do we want to do here? What do I like if I look at these markets today, given that we fell a long ways and we've made back about two thirds of it. Well, the first question is are we like I said are we at the end of the cycle. Are we entering a bear market and the indicators right now are ten towards no? But they have to be watched very carefully. For instance. One of them was. The consumer sentiment and consumer sentiment has been riding fairly high until January when it fell off a cliff, and and that is been due largely to the government shutdown if the government shutdown to solve you know, in the next couple of days, then probably that goes back to being strong. But if it doesn't if it goes on for a longer period of time, I think you know, you have to start looking at some of these numbers. And and maybe maybe it starts making more of a dense longer term. You know, the thing I look at actually is the equity risk premium because the assumption is okay. If if we're nearing the end of the cycle, and I'd say that, you know, we're probably closer to the end of it. Then the not the assumption is well, then equities are probably overvalued. But that may not always be the case. And right now, the people are so concerned about a recession, and so afraid of going through another one that the equity risk premium is now in about six percents compared to about four percent on average, which means that over time. If if you look historically and compare over since nineteen sixty the five year average returns, it's around eleven percent equity returns on average if the equity risk premium is about five percent. If it's below three point four percent. It's somewhere around three percent. It makes a big difference where how much risk is being priced into the market. And right now a lot of risk is being. Priced into the market some points can get priced out. Could we go back to say ninety four ninety five the fed backed off after quite unusual reaction to it. So moved movement on rates, and then we sort of powered forward another four years or so it's possible. You know there. There are a lot of things other than the fed right now. You know, the good good news for markets is that the fed is not under a lot of pressure from inflation to raise rates. They are sending signals that they're willing to be patient. We're getting the same signals right now out of the and so that is not going to be probably the issue that tips everyone into recession. But there are a lot of other things out there. Whether it be Brexit, whether it be the impact of an extended government shutdown that could it could be a death of thousand cuts. And so I think we need to watch it. All right. Well, we'll have to leave it there. Patrick shivani. Thanks very much for joining us this morning on Bloomberg daybreak Asia. Patrick Ovonic is managing director and chief strategist at Silvercrest asset management. We're seeing some risk on around the Asia-Pacific today. The ASX the Nikkei and the kospi all high right now. Again, we've taken worse for word, and I'm going to yield any woman after Mr. Hoyer to our distinguished chair of the appropriations committee to demonstrate how purely Republican senatorial. These measures were so we've separated out there to boats one on the eight departments of government that could be open now to meet the needs of the American people to meet the needs of the American people to protect our borders, and and to protect our workers. And again, the other Bill is mostly about protecting our border. So and that's spirit. I wanna yell try distinguished democratic leader of the house.
