"And we are back with congresswoman val demings. Suddenly you have a question. yes you spent. Nearly three decades in law enforcement becoming the orlando. Police department's first female police chief with calls for police reform and a racial reckoning after the murder of george floyd what does real reform look like to you and is there a need for suppose immunity some sort of qualified immunity sunny. Thank you so much for that question. And you're right. I spent twenty seven years in law enforcement as you saw from the pitcher. My husband also spent over thirty years in law enforcement served as police chief anisa sheriff with an orange county and so it was a profession that i loved a profession that i had an opportunity to work with some of the most courageous men and women that the profession has to offer. But there's no doubt we've had some problems and we have a direct obligation to do something about it when we talk about this issue. You know we frequently talk about the community and the police as if there are two separate entities but the community is the police and the police are the community and the way that we serve solve. The problems is the same way we solved valid crime in orlando a reduced it by forty percent when i was the chief of police by working very closely with the community and so what police perform looks like. I really do believe that we can get this done. Let's work to continue to hire the brightest and the best. Let's make sure that the police departments reflect the diversity in the communities in which they serve. Let's make sure that they received the best training there about eighteen thousand law enforcement agencies throughout our nation different sizes but let's look at training different budgets different training. Let's look at training and come up with some standardized training that all law enforcement departments will go through. Let's look at policies. One of the things that i did right after george floyd was to reach out with two different sheriffs and chiefs of police and ask them to fix their own broken this to look within their agencies at their policies and fix things and their policies that they did not need to wait on legislation to do. Like no knock warrants. Look as a former chief. I know how high risk they can be for officers and for citizens in our community and so banning no knock warrants non violent cases cases. What happened to george. Floyd was brutal. It was senseless and it was murder and the persons responsible should be and as you know are being held accountable but sunny very quickly as we deal with police reform we also need to deal with those quality of life issues that calls decay and communities in the first place. Let's get serious about mental health counseling funding for that. Let's get serious about drug addiction. Treatment funding less dress address substandard housing.

"Communists blah blah blah blah. Blah blah. Ortega blah blah blah castro. That's what he's going to run with against you. He's going to say you voted with progressives that you are a socialist. What do you say in return. And what i say is that desperate people do desperate things and to tell you the truth. I am offended that marco rubio would try to use the pain and suffering of people. Anna like you who fled communism who fled. Undemocratic regimes ran for their lives. That rubio would try to use their pain and suffering to make you afraid of me. I think that is disgraceful. I think it is disgusting. Matter fact what i'd like to hear rubio talk about. Let's talk about what's happening in nicaragua. Where five at least five. Opposition leaders were jailed and the government was weaponized against them. Rubio what do you think about that. But then we're talking about someone who stood next to win supports our president who has weaponized the department of justice against his perceived political rivals and the media so this race balls down again to who is willing to stand up and speak up for all people not pick and choose winners and losers. Based on your ability to play like marco rubio. He's afraid of a fight. I am not floridians are worth fighting for. Val demings dot com. Okay i you know. I think it be really good if mark rubio would come on this show and answer some of the things that you have said you say. He's afraid to to fight. We can have them on here. Let's see what he does with that. Okay but we're going to have more with congresswoman val demings.

To all of those folks who said it was their first time getting into investing is said hell to the no no investing in individual stocks and i repeated the title of this episode to them index funds and chill warren buffett. He has a very smart investor perhaps best of all time said the greatest investment americans can make is putting their money in low cost s and p five hundred index funds and when the greatest investor of all time speaks. We should seriously listen so. Let's unpack what he said. An index is a collection of different stocks by a certain set of parameters. So what does that mean when you hear the stock market report saying the dow is up blah blah blah the s. and p. Five hundred is down blah blah blah. The nasdaq is blah blah blah level. They're talking about the three main indexes the dow the s&p five hundred and the nasdaq now the dow jones industrial average or just the dow for example tracks the thirty biggest stocks in the united states including ones like apple and microsoft dizzy the s. and p. Five hundred is made up of recently five hundred and five stocks which is annoying to my organizational. Put it in a bento box praying. But i digress there. It's made up of different large cap. "Emmy nominee for his work on man in the high castle. Here's our conversation. As i said at san diego comic. First of all. Congratulations on the emmy nomination. Men into high qasem. Thank you very much. I've talked to those folks over the years on the other coast new york comic con. And it's an amazing show. This affects point of view. You're like the whole nazi and the whole asian out area. It's kind of like a combination of modern and retro right. Look so her. The effects you kind of build on what the production designer has done and kind of enhanced that so what's it like to kind of straddle that line between retro and in a projection of what it could be like so drew out in the production designer who was also nominated for an emmy for this season He's really amazing. Work with a lot of the ideas that end up on screen whether they're the practical ideas or the the digital digital facts come from Images that he's created ideas that he's had research that he and his team have done A lot of what we do Visually on the show is take a reference from that production design. You know because when when they build those sets oftentimes from a visual standpoint. We have to augment them. We're creating digital copies of buildings or storefronts or physical things at the art department is created like phone booths. there's nazi phone booths. We created digital versions of those from the from the costume design standpoint. Cates We we use those to create digital doubles for the background characters the The our our our person in charge of the picture cars giovane has all these cars that he's rented and pulled together for these street scenes and then we take pictures of those and we create digital versions of those. There's all kinds of things for the sake of this sort of visual. Continuity are are riffing off of the sort of practical elements in the show The other thing we do is we just do a ton of research historic research particularly with visual effects because the visual effects is always doing things that is sort of outside the reach of the practical build. There's there's extra pressure because people are already going to say well. You couldn't have done that so it must be visual effects so they look at it extra closely right so whenever possible. We're looking at historical references trying to bear as closely as possible and Looking at things in the real world so like four season three we created a japanese battleship the motto which is a real battleship that was sunk in world war two but we have created the version of it to survive world war two so we looked at real. Us battleships that have become museums now and because they continue to serve for many years after world war two in service and were modified and got radar towers installed and missile launchers and solemn and stuff like that so we use all those references is close as we can to what to what we do know exist to create things that never existed. What's interesting is to. Is you know in in the days before if you needed a thousand extras you hire a thousand extra but now with your digital doubles you can you can change the outfits. Every on every other character you can have a literally a cast of thousands. Show up on scene obvious set. Something you guys can do to we. Can we have done it. In some cases yes we create fully digital characters in some cases they will get two hundred or three hundred Background people and we will Either film them in chunks. Right so you do. It's piling where yeah that group of people around multiple places or we also do something sometimes where we shoot each of them individually not fully individually. We'll shoot them against the green screen separated thar apart enough from one another to read those individuals and then we cut every personnel and then we can rearrange them in any number of ways into the background of shot so it's a little simpler than grading fully digital doubles. But it still gives us that flexibility of being able to randomize large group of people now in the process. Not just for this program. How early are you guys called in to work with with you. Know with the production team. Essential high castle is special in that. It's one of those shows where we are in very early. So for this for this current season of the fourth and final season which has not aired yet and is still being completed by my team as we speak We got a script an outline of the season before months before it even started and so we were able to look and say oh. This is going to be a little thing. That's going to be a little thing. And then i was in vancouver where the show is shot to produce and supervise their win. to scout. locations went to script. Production meetings had meetings with production designer with cinematographers. All the way till now tomorrow. I'm going to the final color. Correction session with director of the final episode to talk about the few little stragglers of visual effects. Shots were still trying to finish so literally from way before the show started shooting to after shooting involved in and that really is not every show does that for visual effects but this show benefits a huge amount from that because you really do want to see the entire process through you have background and a toddler. Fading do so. Does that help. You must help when you're talking to cinematographers and and other filmmakers. Frankly i think it helps me. It helps depending on what we're talking about yes. I developed a love of photography. When i was pretty young and i started doing taking pictures. I was always interested in visual effects. But i realized pretty early on the visual effects is just part of the filmmaking process and that it is oftentimes an attempt to replicate what. I'll call real filmmaking because you know if you're doing a shot that's completely digital you. Have a camera with that camera. Doesn't behave exactly like a real camera does. And so you're looking at things like oh it filters cinematographer us with the field where they shooting their shot. At which shutter angle. What is their lighting. Where's the white indirection coming from. I mean all these things parts of matafi that if you understand them from visual standpoint it makes a visual effects better And so i. I love those little details. Like the shape of the of the of the circles of confusion in the depth of field. Things like that to a really. What gets me excited about. Or shod those technical things And that's i think why why the work looks does you're doing is you're you're running the effects in so that it's seamless city. Looks like a one shot if we do it right. Yeah that's amazing. You co-founded barksdale. Yes so what what added been like i mean. Have you seen the explosion that we have had lately. with the faction i mean. Hollywood is totally in love with him. Yes yes which is good for you guys. Good so yes so. Barnstorm was sort of founded by accident. And not is a partly where we get our name from so barnstorming barnstorming is concept essentially That came about in the early days of aviation. Which is that pilots. Like operators of planes just sort of fly into town and they'd they'd hanger their planes barn and they just do jobs they do mail delivery or crop dusting they would do stunt aerial shows. The term has expanded to be involved in sports teams barnstorming around the country when we started my partner and i started there. Were just two of us and we were just freelance visual effects artists. And we didn't have an office we would just go to different shows. And we'd work on the show and when that show was done me go work on another show. And so we were barnstorming around and when the circumstances Started in which we had to form a company His his parents his father and grandfather and great-grandfather all pilots. And so we were like okay. This is a great name for the company. Let's do this and took this sort of aviation theme and ran with it and it just over the years it just exploded you know like every year the company sort of doubled in size. We're now up to around seventy people. It's like fifty here in l. A. and twenty people in vancouver and yeah. We've been very fortunate. We've worked with a lot of really good good people good producers and show runners and Really love those kinds of relationships. Those are the best projects to work on these people who you have a sort of a poor with and have worked with before and we're going to try to keep doing good work and hope to keep working on on things you know the the visual effects industry is very competitive and it's global to And so if we consider those very fortunate to be able to work on on a show that says well received high castle and not all of them get recognized so let's get that recognition in india. It's amazing have you ever stopped and taking a breath and say. Wow i on the one hand. I'm too busy on the other hand. I sort of say that like every day it was like what are we doing. We get here great to talk to you. Thank you very much pleasure special. Thanks to impact twenty four. Pr until next time. This is tony auto. Thanks for listening shane. One apple take two..

"Joe Biden and Kamala Harris you know I think on that note I'm thinking about you know with four more days and I. Live in a state where we vote by mail, we've been voting by mail in Washington State for as long as I can remember. So it was easy for me I turned my ballot last week right. But hear these stories you know these people standing in line lines wrapped around the corner shining in line for hours and I feel like you know once this is over once we Passed you know we're past next Tuesday we need to the people who are privileged enough to live in states like I do and who aren't as affected by voter suppression. As other people, we need to make it our job to make sure that everybody has it as easy as we have it. Right. So my job doesn't end with turning my ballot. That's right. That's right. I was. On a call last night and we were talking about a voting rights we were talking about John Lewis and how he shed his blood on the Edmund Pettus bridge just trying to make sure that everyone had the right to vote. We talked about the poll taxes and poll tests of the past like how many jelly beans are in a jar? How many feathers on Dutt how many? There on that are of soap. You know all of those ridiculous things that we those were the taxes in tests of the past. But today now we see polling places closing and and lines wrapped around buildings and places where you can vote with your gun permit but not your student Id, and so those are the morten modern day forms of voter suppression, and we've we in our conversation last night we talked about how we really need to come together after the election and continue to work on these issues because our job is to make voting easier. For the American people not more difficult. And and finish the word really that John Lewis. Gate dedicated his life to to that work and set us blood right shut shut down I brought up and I've been on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which John Lewis, and you know it's just you know when we were standing in the okay. If you want to close polling places and make me drive an hour to vote and then make me wait two, three, four, seven, eight hours in line. I'm. GonNa Remember Lewis. And I'm GonNa do what it takes, but then we're never going to. Give up the fight to continue to make voting easier and not more difficult look. I'm from the State of Florida and I remember Gore Bush two thousand and so so you know Shenanigans. In two, thousand, eighteen amendment four, which would have given restored voting rights for convicted felons who had served their time sixty three percent of Floridians voted in favor of that amendment and yet state legislature governor have come up with you know a another poll tax is what I call it where they're saying well will if you owe fees if you owe back fees or court fees or any other kind of fees than you gotta pay all of that before you're able to vote. While, you know there are a couple of problems with that. Number one, how are you going to do that? Because you've you know you've just been released from prison but number two, there are people who have who are not just released from prison who owe back fees and fines and they can go vote. So you can't have the same ended and is used against one group of people but us I, it's fine with another group of people and so you know the tricks of the trade, the Shenanigans continue and you write our job even after this election is to continue to find ways whether this legislatively or other ways to make voting easier and the irony of at the biggest criminal overall who's occupying the White House. Has No problem voting. Manager tell me about it as talked about how. The you know the fraud older folding fraud with vote by mail, and this is a man and his family and his staff who gets what voted by mail. So. It's just parker see is just. But anyway yeah. So just in closing. Past next week, we're trump's out of office November fourth or he's voted out of office by November four the weeks following that and we're past the inauguration. What listen to we take as a nation so that we don't end up there again while number one I think. We never take anything for granted. You know the the founders of this country while they had their issues as well. When they created this great American experience, they build a system of checks and balances which I think was pretty brilliant where one branch of government which check the other equal branches of government the executive branch did wrong and boy have we seen that over the last four years than the legislative branch would check them or the judicial branch would check the legislative branch or the executive branch? The branches would check each other. Now the founders it was interesting. Work Concerned about an undisciplined and unprincipled man find it might man of course because that's as far as their vision could take them and we still aren't there yet but I know it's coming but unprincipled and undisciplined man finding his way to the White House. So they gave House of Representatives, the power of impeachment. But what they did not factor on was all of the branches of government. Failing. Or. Crumbling. and. Win. The executive branch of government was out of control unethical illegal immoral. Legislative branch failed to check them I e the Senate said Oh nothing to see here. Let's not impeach and remove. The Judicial branch. We've seen the president over the last four years. You talk about court backing. The with the president and the Senate have focused on little else. Other than ramming through pushing through rushing through. Justices and judges in our courts. And so our first priority I believe after Joe Biden Comma Harris take office is to really look at how we can continue to strengthen and protect. Our democracy put those processes or legislation in place. So when the system breaks down, we can still protect the houses right number one issue in a subpoena and have the person who receives that subpoena respond to it. and. So we do have to focus there and we just have to remember who we are as a nation and that our democracy is the best. But with that, it's a fragile democracy. We have to focus on making voting easier. And not more difficult. So every person can have that right we have to restore. The the portions of the Voting Rights Act of nineteen, sixty five that were removed in shelby versus holder. That really gave teeth to the legislation to hold those states that misbehave accountable, and so I think that has to be a priority and then we have unified strategic response to, Kobe we have gun safety legislation that we need to get past. We have to look at education and make sure that we strengthen public education. So we can give children because we know the majority of Americans America's children will go through the public education school system stronger and give them the best chance of success. We have to look at women and making less than what a man makes for the same work. We have to protect the affordable care act and expand on. So we can protect preexisting conditions and women cannot be charged more for their health insurance than a man can be, and so we have our work cut out for us but I tell you what would Joe Biden in Comal Harris will have the right team to get the work done for.

"Think that was the number and people being evicted. You know as as a former social worker and a former police chief I know about those things? I. Know Those people have met those people worked with those people before we're talking about real people with real issues and you're absolutely correct. Now let's think about black businesses because what I do as an elected official is go around and try best to inspire people to. Invest in their skills and talents and abilities, and realize their dream open up that business that you've been thinking about. and. Can you imagine you do that? You take your limited life savings and you put all their hope in hopes and dreams into a business and then something comes along through no fault of your own. And you lose it, and in worse than that, the person in charge doesn't even seem to. CARE ABOUT Those fifty percent of black businesses that have closed. And so right you know we have an affordable housing crisis in this country anyway on a good day. But I hear from constituents every day? Or scared to death, they are going to be evicted in a moment. And here in Florida we have a governor who the night before the extension expires decides well okay I'll extended. I'll, extended. Could you imagine living like that when you think I, need to start packing up because I'm GONNA be victim. What's anybody doing for me? I'm an honest person I worked hard I did. And so real people with real issues were that they're going to be thrown out on the street word should I send my children back to school are not because I need to go back to work so again, so I can peep the roof over my head and food on the table or is there childcare out there? That's available for me. These are real issues, and so it it's we have a person occupying the White House who is completely out of touch with that Joe Biden. Isn't touch with it because he's lived it and you know what he does he Kamla they get out and talk to people who are having this experience. They're not behind some barrier at a rally, just talking about how great they are or how coal they are, and how it's all about them or how they were able to beat covert nineteen. We should not allow it to take over our lives when that person had the most professional, the best medical team that you know taxpayer dollars can. Buy and so it's just he's out of touch and we need someone who's in touch with the American people and that's Joe by we do I remember after all the first thing I want to say is that a lot of those families that were just talking about and this is the thing I think about a lot and we don't hear enough about is that a lot of those families have not recovered from the great recession underbrush from the last Republican Administration and they will never recover. That wealth? So that's one thing to think about right. So you know we further further been devastated under this current administration and the second thing about him only caring about himself. I remember after the second debate Joe Biden was doing social media posts and doing addresses and tweets about the American people what he was going to do about the pandemic what are you going to do about the economy and the occupant of the White House kept tweeting about any story that said he'd won the debate. It was like dozens of tweets about how he'd won the debate nothing about the American people nothing and you know it's kind of obvious to I. Mean We know he watches a lot of television to see what people are saying about him, who has the time to look? receive. Definitely didn't have time to sit round and watch television. And certainly as a member of Congress, I don't have that time. How does he have time as the president of the United States to sit around and watch what people are saying about him on TV, and then send out tweets it just further demonstrates how uninterested he is an really governing and you know when we think about. That question out there what are you have to lose and what's at stake in this election? We think about everything that we are as a nation is at stake our reputation on a world stage or decency our word, our integrity. But what about those things that the American people care about the things that you just talked about key people up all night healthcare we're in the middle of a public health pandemic and we have a president who's going to court. Trying to repeal the affordable care act with absolutely nothing to replace it and take coverage away from MS of America's. But also those with pre existing conditions we've talked about housing we already have affordable housing crisis. Let's talk about education. That's how education is. Unaffordable for so many of our children you know, and so we need somebody who cares about those things. Joe Biden has a plan for all of those things. Let's talk about criminal justice reform how well I know about that and the need social justice police reform but also dealing with those quality of life issues substandard housing, sub-standard education drug a you know addiction, treatment mental health counseling. Joe Biden has a plan to deal with those things. The current occupant of the White House doesn't even know there's a problem or does not care that there is a problem. The only thing that is on his mind four days out from the election is what story he can tell true or not. That will help him win the election Omar, how he can lie, cheat, steal, and cheat to win the election. That is the only thing on his mind. No, you're right I mean most of the things you just mentioned he never never talked about. Ever. Heard him talk about the cost of college tuition. And how young people once they are able to use their accepted in the and able to Hard and graduate that their saddle with debt mountains of debt. Have you ever heard the current occupant of the White? House talk about that? No. No. How to do the job he just doesn't know how to do the job. He knows how to be an entertainer. We talking about that's why you vote in the Harrah's and. And talk about women and I talked about the impact that all of this has on women I mean you could take you know every issue is a woman's issue because it affects disproportionately impacts women whether it's copen nineteen or healthcare pre existing conditions or the cost of college tuition or wages being paid less than a man for the same job, and that's why we have you know women for Biden who had have mobilized hundreds of thousands of. Women all over the country who are making calls were having you know meetings via zoom and other webinars and other social media to get the word out that if we really want to make a difference in these these issues that we do care about then we have to mobilize to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and you know we talk about being committed to women's issues I think Joe Biden demonstrated that when he said I'm going to. Appoint a woman as my running mate. I'M GONNA point a woman as my partner. He said that any followed through on that commitment women know that every issue of impacts them more more than anybody, and that's why I like to call it. We talk about women for Biden I'm glad to be a part of it, but I like to call it operation women for by. Makes me feel all right because when women get busy things happen when women get busy things change and when women get busy we win. and. So count the number of women who were standing in lines at polling places around the country at these early voting sites you know they remember what Michelle Obama's instructions were. Be prepared take your comfortable shoes, pack a lunch or dinner. If you have to take your folding chair who was at Shirley Chisholm, who said look if you don't have a seat at the table, bring a folding chair. are in the lines there are there for the long haul they understand how critical this election is women know that we make all the difference in the world and they know that there's only one team who cares about them and everything that they care about.

"I'm Jim Taylor skinner, and this is the electorate. On this episode. A have a conversation with congresswoman Valda Ming's. As we enter the final days before the presidential election, she joins me to discuss what's truly at stake. In this election, we also talk about her speech during last year's impeachment hearings, and why she said during that speech that she didn't feel this moment in history and we talk about how she maintains her resolve through this moment of crisis for our democracy. So here's my conversation with congresswoman. Val. demings working valda means welcome to the podcast it's to be with. You thanks for inviting me. You know one of the moments that I remember and I always think about this a lot whenever I'm feeling kind of down and things are terrible. I. Remember Your address during the impeachment hearings rate you know and that really stayed with me because you reminded me and you reminded Americans that we've been through worse, he's talked about your parents you talked about you know you being raised by the daughter of a main janitor during the sixties. And you know being the descendant of slaves being a black woman in the south I'm a black woman who grew up in the south to and that. These people who did not know if they would make it or not but they were determined to make it and I remember what you said. You said that you did not fear that moment right? That's right. But. That was a year ago. Right. So people are really afraid now because it's literally life or death, what do you say to us? Now what we say is to remember our history. Because as I indicated in my address during the impeachment inquiry. America has some deep dark days. But we've also through it all been able to come out of those days into brighter days. It wasn't easy. It never is. But we have to believe that we are still capable of becoming the country that we were created to be, and it was important for me to talk about a my parents at that point because they help to help me to set the stage for the message I wanted to convey that night, look the door of a maid and a janitor. My parents were good. Decent honest people who love this country even though there were times, the country did not act like it loved them and they taught their children to be honest decent and respectful and to love and not hate I. also I thought I thought about four hundred years ago you know this country was built on the backs of slaves and slaves who worked all day long. And still sang songs in the fields and and so you know we have the ability to live up to who we say we are because I've seen this country, do it before and even though we find ourselves during this critical time with someone who just currently in office who just does not understand who we are or what America was designed to be has. Taken us to such a dark place, but I do believe that help is on the way and four more days. We have the unity to elect Joe Biden, Kamla harass people who get it people who believe in something bigger than themselves people who believe in this country understand the joys and pains of this country and can really take us closer to a more perfect union. Absolutely right. I mean that's the fundamental thing about the person who is occupying the office right now teaches at the the core at the deepest level. He does not understand what this country is about right That's why he does the things he does like he would not be trying to suppress the vote, which is fundamental to everything that we have the way that he does it. If he truly understood America, you know our country is in trouble and I guess being a former law enforcement officer that might not be the most politically correct thing. But you know I've tried to be as up front as transparent as I can and we're in trouble and we have one person Joe Biden who cares about that and wants to do something about it and we had the other person Donald Trump who only cares about himself and wants us to not believe or Is Our ears, and so we have four more days for more days before everything that we care about. Will come together or four days before everything that we care about will fall apart and so it's just really critical time and you're right. The vote is so important and you know all of the efforts is the very beginning to suppress the vote. So that lets us know how critical and how important are vote is because my gosh is the beginning a hundred years ago and more people have worked hard to stop blacks and women and other minorities from being able to exercise their most fundamental precious right and that's the right to vote right Well at some points when things get to the way they are right now you're right we're in trouble at some point you dropped your titles you dropped your labels and you just become an American and you have to be look at what point are you honest about the moment that we're in right some people seems like they'll never get there right you know they'll just keep going along with the game and pretending everything's fine but the rest of us we're just Americans were telling people that the truth that we're in trouble that's right and look. No one plan covid nineteen I'll start there because that's that's on everybody's mind to right and no one planned it. But our response to it as a nation is everything our response to it as a nation is the difference between life and death our response to it as a nation is the difference between. Being able to keep the doors open on your small business and we have lost so much people are struggling. They're suffering. They're trying to make ends meet to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. They're worried about their children and you think about the number of people, millions of Americans have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. They've lost their jobs and women in particular have been feeling the. Major brunt of this crisis, and you know when I hear the the president current occupant of the White House talking about you know, Saito's suburban women we're going to get. I'm going to get your husband's back to work pack over fifty percent of America's workforce a women. So it just continues to show how out of touch he is, and so you know women have been disproportionately impacted by the lack of response to the corona. And so as I said, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, they care about that. They have a plan to get us out of it. Current occupant of the White House never had a plan because he was never interested in governing I. Think he was interested in figuring out can leverage the power of the White House for his own personal gain and that is just disgraceful while we need to restore someone who has a plan for America to the White, house need to put that person in the. White. House. We also need to put integrity and honesty and decency back in the White House we have four more days for former days and I think you're absolutely right I. Think Obama said this recently in one of the rallies heated for Joe Biden that trump is not interested in doing the job. He was never interested in doing the job. He has other interests right and probably has to do with those millions of dollars in debt that he has. You know but that's that's another issue. Yeah I, mean I served as an impeachment manager right? I know the whole story and I I have concluded that this president was never interested in governing. America was just a bargaining tool for him in his next deal and I think that's absolutely disgraceful. Yeah. What I appreciate about your leadership is that I know that you focus on those things that we aren't getting a lot of news about right I. mean there's so much and I'm not faulting anyone. There's just so much to talk about you know. People who are kind of focusing on covert in relation to the deaths and the numbers that are rising. But you know once this is all over, they're going to be lives at are devastating businesses closed I saw a number of the other day something like fifty percent of black businesses have closed right I.

"W Edwards Deming the father of statistical process control and a demigod of industrial engineering in Japan and a critical thinker about business processes came up with this rule. That's now God name on it 95% of variation in the performance of a system is caused by the system itself. Only 5% is caused by the people now this is generally now known as the Deming 95.5 Rule and you're probably already familiar with another rule that's similar. It's another observation the parental principal or also known as eighty-twenty Rule and both of these rules say something about the nature of the world and they both give us tools for thinking about how to be more effective at what we do and particularly in the case of the ninety five five rule. They give us some insight into the limits of how effective we can be as is Jules demings point was that even for exceptional people in most processes any affect the individual may have due to skill or expertise being careful working fast working hard dog? Walked by the system. They're part of now. This sounds terrible for product managers. Right since we were usually individual contributors, and we mostly don't have much in the way of tools. So it's up to us to be super skilled Subaru spurt super careful Superfast right to get all the stuff done and realistically there for like most people we don't want this rule shoved in our faces. Of course as product managers. We don't do know that this rule is true for our users and that's why we try to make our products intuitive try to ensure that the users get the results they need and that they want even if they aren't experts and ideally design our schedules so they can't get bad results. Even if they use a system incorrectly. In other words, we mould our products so that the desired value is delivered and is as independent as possible on individual users performance Justice Deming suggested now, no system is foolproof, of course, but what if we do look in the mirror though and recognize that we as individuals dead Are at least partially impacted by demings rule as well? Hi, this is Nell's Davis and you're listening to episode number 74 of all the responsibility. Biden’s Top Running-Mate Contenders Emerge as He Enters Key Week

"So here's the thing with Biden's process. NBC reported that he is supposed to meet with all of these potential picks this week by midweek and judging counting on my fingers, let's see mid week that would be tomorrow. So if you're going to meet by midweek that's tomorrow. Hump Day. Kamala Harris, Karen Bass are two of the front runners Susan Rice. She's 100 front runner and then Additionally, NBC says Congresswoman Val Demings from Florida is under consideration. And Senator Elizabeth Warren. But there right now considered the also rans that he is in a position right now where he's thinking Kamala Harris, Karen Bass or Susan Rice for his top three Now, This is pretty interesting, because one we were familiar with Susan Rice. She's you know, a neo con, deeply conventional person in Washington D C very much to return to the status quo. She's very Lying comes very easily to her. She's been doing it for years. She doesn't mind doing it to the American public s o. She would do whatever it is that the Biden campaign needs and restore the status quo to Washington, which everyone's really amped up for. It can't wait to get back to the old days on. That's what Susan Rice would represent. And then there's Kamala Harris, who, for whatever reason, is under consideration in the midst of this giant conversation around police and law enforcement injustice. They decided to go for a prosecutor who treated people deeply unfairly left exonerating evidence off the table that would have helped people on death row in prison people for marijuana usage and then later laughed about her own marijuana usage, flaming hypocrite in all of those ways, so she's out there, both of them rather well known, but there's 1/3 person. And it's congresswoman, Karen Bass from California, and she is one of the least scrutinized people at the national level in all of American politics. And for that reason, Boy, have you noticed how many stories and headlines have popped up in the last few days about her past and about what she has said and done. I wondered to myself if she's regretting being part of this screening process for VP If she's like, Oh, man, the senator not well for me all my skeletons air coming out of the

Atomic Budgeting Pt. 2: Systems, Not Goals

"May be my favorite takeaway from James Book again. I'm talking about atomic habits. I I just I liked the thought and he. He says it's about systems, not goals. Here's a quote. The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become, so said he's framing it suddenly as more of an identity thing, and that is that we're actually going to dig into that next week, but that idea. Suddenly makes it to where it's not about reaching some milestone of this much debt paid off this achievement, and then once you're done. You're like well, Geez. What do I do and you start to fall back in your old ways. This is about becoming something new however. When we think about achievements, we use the word goals all the time. I Love Goals Love Goals. I Have Brian Tracy's classic book. It's called goals with an exclamation point is literally to my right. I'm looking at it right now. When I look at it though I don't talk to them, I can't keep looking at it. I love goals, but you think about this and James Use this in the book. Teams Compete against each other. Both of them have the same goal. What is it to win? Case same goal only one wins. So you can have a goal and two people can have the same goal, but it doesn't necessarily mean that that's going to be the outcome. What the team really focuses on because every. If you'RE GONNA, go head coach, what are you? Do you just need to win? Your goal is to win. That's not very helpful. A coach a trainer. Financial Adviser. They're going to talk to you more about your system. What will help you to achieve that goal than about your goal? itself and I if a financial adviser said Oh? Yeah, you'll need to have two point three seven five million dollars in order to retire every time you win, visit him. They're like it's two point three, seven, five, who now up around the down just two point three seven. Seven five million dollars. That's what we're talking about. That's the goal. Let's put it on a poster and have a really motivation with a cat involved and hang on your cell and I in you. Wake up and see two point three seven five million dollars now. The only way that would actually happen is if you started to change. The system started to build a system. That would get you exactly that. Edward Deming the big Management Guru. He said that assist or process always gives the output that it is designed to gift I, didn't quote him directly I was paraphrasing. It was far more eloquent I'm sure when he said it, but the idea. Is that exactly what you have? Is Because of the process that you have designed you maybe don't feel like you've intentionally designed it, but you've designed it. It's yours. That's how you're doing things that your system where you're at right now is exactly built, or the process. Was exactly bill to get you to where you are now, you could say well. No this extra analogy that extra naughty covert my word. Oh absolutely, but the system still was built to respond to that extra. In that way to get you to where you are. And if you think about that just for a little bit, it starts to not I hopefully. It doesn't make you say. Oh. I can't believe I'm. Me No no. What hopefully tells you is if I can focus on my process I? Don't have to worry so much about the goal. Your goal is financial independence or paying off debt or any number of valid things. But focus on the system. Is the system going to get you? There think about the system. We have a four rule decision framework. Essentially, that is built to help you achieve financial goals. They're not. It's not built to abused chief. Specific financial goes that Jesse's going to give you. It's built to help you achieve a financial goal that you desire. This framework is universal. Give her a job. Embrace you tr-. Expenses roll with the punches when things change right. We have a system that allows you to be adaptable to different extra nowadays that come at you. You and age your money. Give yourself a little bit of buffer. That's just a decision framework. It's a system, so if you focus on working wine APPs system of these four rules, and then you notice, there are a little kind of details how many categories you have. How many accounts you have when you choose to budget if you're doing it with a partner. Partner how you guys working that out there. Little details there that you can make your own, but we have the system for you, and if you focus on just executing every single time, you get that paycheck. What should this money do before I'm paid again? What larger less frequent expenses do I need to deal with now when I'm deciding whether or not I should? Should buy this tiny little thing that I think I can afford because of a large checking account balance I'm also considering Christmas the next eventual vacation once we're allowed to fly or any number of other things, and you're making a decision based on good information. That's a system that works, and that's why people reach their goals when they're using wind up the system. That's why we're. We're seeing. Success is because it's not just do this do that. Pay Off your debt boom done no just work this system. Goals you can talk to one of their goals acts and other one ever. Their goal is completely opposite why? And the system works for both so work. That

"Back with congresswoman. Val demings sunny. Congresswoman I! Want to ask you about corona virus given the shocking rise in Florida cases, the state has really come under scrutiny for the accuracy and transparency of their reporting on numbers after a scientists and created Florida's Covid nineteen dashboard says she was fired after she refused to make changes to data supporting the state's plan to reopen. Do you think your state is being on with case totals at this point? Well. Let me, say this. The Surgeon General here in Florida declared a public health emergency on March first yet. It wasn't until April third. The governor issued a stay at home order. So we've had some issues with our response to covert nineteen We know the story about the analysts who was fired. She says because she was being honest about what she was reporting. We certainly see the numbers in Florida while they are better than originally predicted I leave. A lot of that is because individuals took responsibility on their own to shelter in place and practice the CDC guidelines. We've had some questions about even the numbers coming out of our nursing homes. Here in Florida there's always been this question about the numbers that have been reported. Were they accurate and so we are still keeping an eye on that. We're still trying to make sure as we reopen Florida and. It's it's unbelievable, but as the numbers rise, prepare for. The Republican National Convention. We're still keeping an eye on the numbers and trying to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to give individual families and others accurate information, so they can protect themselves. Steward this very critical time. Congresswoman president trump is bringing back his campaign rallies, and he had planned one on Friday June nineteenth, the anniversary known as June eighteenth, he has now moved the rally one day later amidst mounting pressure and criticism and everyone who attends his rally sign a waiver, assuming risks related to Cova did trump says they've already had over eight hundred thousand ticket requests clearly, these rallies were effective for him in the last election. What do you think president? Vice President Biden can do. and His campaign right now to counter what president trump is doing? Well, I commend Vice President Biden for being the adult in the room. We are in the middle of a public health crisis. I am thankful that Vice President. Biden is listening to the CDC, our medical experts and scientists. And continuing to practice social distancing look, he's getting his message out. He sailed some very important burchell rallies and address the nation of about many things including racism and social injustices. He's talked about CDC and what he or the covert nine hundred and what he believes needs to happen. The president on the other hand obviously is Jesper. And word about the upcoming election in November, and for the individuals that he is inviting to come to a rally. I've dealt with evidence and clues for a long time in my career. When you have to sign a medical waiver saying that you want, hold the president responsible. If you contract covert nineteen is a pretty good clue that the president should not be hold in rally. This is yet another opportunity for the president of the United States to put people first. And yet again, he just can't seem to find it within himself to do that. Well, we're going to take another break and come back with Congresswoman Val demings. We are bad. What congresswoman VAL demings joy! So Congresswoman Terry. McAuliffe A prominent. Democrat and Joe Biden supporter. well. He thinks that the former vice president should remain in his Delaware homes baseman for the rest of the two thousand twenty presidential campaign. Actually he's very safe down there and they should let trump keep doing what he's doing. What do you think of that strategy? You know just as we are doing this interview this morning. Look, I would much rather be there with you all in the studio talking to you, but zoom has become like my second best friend. SKYPE is like my second best friend teams like my second best friend. We have to find a way to get it done. Because we all realize we've had over two million people contract Cova nineteen. Hundred and twelve thousand. Plus have died as a result of this virus, and so I believe that leads I said earlier I. Thankful that Vice President by is being. The adult in the room is listened to medical professionals and scientists and plan it safe, but still finding a way just as we are today to get his message out and rally Everybody I think people are excited. We were disappointed in two thousand sixteen, but you know. Know what we didn't have in two thousand sixteen we had. We didn't have four years of the current occupant of the White House I. Think People are excited and more motivated than others as we deal with some critical issues, some have been around for centuries. Some are new. The vice president is finding a way to get his message out, and we appreciate him. doing it in a safe and responsible way. Also having said that. How welcome is you know who gonNA BE? In Jacksonville Knowing that you know it's kind of going to be a breeding ground for this. Calvin one thousand nine hundred comeback, and is the city of Jacksonville really ready to handle that many people coming in from all kinds of places with all kinds of stuff. I would say based on what medical experts and scientists say no. Jacksonville is my hometown I was born and raised in Jacksonville. Presidents taken the. Republican National Convention here in Orlando, he had his kickoff for his reelection. In My district, but let me just say this it boils down to do. You have the ability to put the people that you represent I and as we continue to see numbers. Go Up in Florida. Why on Earth would you push to have the convention here and bring tens of thousands of people here and expose them risk their health. The health safety and wellbeing of the American people is the president of the United. States number one responsibility, but obviously he does not know that and does not understand that. Who is was my mate at ABC and now is in MSNBC, anger to say that he isn't worth paying as much as ABC would pay for toilet, paper. The fact that Marris given COMPO, who is a friend and a former colleague at ABC? The fact that she has an NDA in place and can't talk about her experiences at ABC tells me that. Systemic racism touches everything and everyone in our society regardless of social stature. No one is immune. It's the type of racism that black people deal with every single day and it has to stop. And I look forward to the results of what I hear is going to be an independent external investigation and I felt very loved and supported by my colleagues. I felt supported by all of you I. Know Megan I had at least an hour conversation this weekend. What be you were so supportive? Joy? You were so supportive. Executive producers on the show were so supportive. And I. Thank you all for that, but again. This has got to stop. And I just look forward to changes if all of this is true here at ABC and just in our country. Joy Anything YOU WANNA add? I'm very sorry. That has been hurt by this as she said. We stick without girls where we support each other. I think it's great that ABC is doing a intensive investigation. This type of thing has to be rooted out and we'll see what happens. That's all I have to add to what you already said. How `Bout you, Megan. Look I echo. What everyone's saying about an independent investigation? Look. All of us has zero tolerance for any kind of racism or intolerance period. Sunday night did have a long conversation this weekend. She's in the water pain and I am disgusted by these allegations as everyone is and I just WanNa. Make one thing really clear. There's a lot of people a lot of things about these hosts, the show and the press, but when you attack one of us, you're attacking all of us and I stand in support sunny throughout all of this in any way that you need, and I support my colleagues at ABC who've been attacked by this and again. We don't know the answer to it, but. This is a really hard time in our country. And I think hitting this close to home in in this show that we have really been good soldiers through throughout the pandemic throughout the political season throughout all this. This one's a tough blow. have to. I'm about to say it. You know I know Barbara for data and I'm. I don't think she's racist. Everything I know about her doesn't say that she has the sent her. But I will say that one of the things that everyone should always make sure we say, and I say it. All the time is less find out. Let's find out because if it's true. She's gone. But if it's not, let's find out what's going on. An independent investigation is what this needs because. The days of systemic racism are ending. Those walls are coming down and we're pulling them down so. I feel like having lived through this kind of thing where someone accused me of doing something I didn't do I'm always I'm always first and foremost to say okay. Let's find out what really is the truth. And once we find out what the truth is will deal with it because nobody can deal with this anymore. There's too much stuff happening in the world, no reason for anybody to be in this kind of pain so. This out there we know you. We know you and if you turn out to be in the walls of the building with tearing the building down, you're coming out. We'll be right back. His words and actions have moved millions now tomorrow, the brother of George,.

"Welcome to another episode of Vendor Stories. About village global here today with two very special guests Laura Deming of longevity fund and will eat in in a currently in er with Eric Anderson who notably founded Adam Ab and before that spent six years at till capital focusing on early stage life-science Specie investing will will lower welcome to the podcast yes absolutely will. You've been about tech investor for quite some time now. Why don't you sort of give us a lay of the land of serve the different segments within in biotech. You invest in really what we focused on. Was Her first placements. seed to series. B. So really focused on the kind of early early stuff off right so most of these companies were preclinical though we did some early clinical companies but you know very very much on the super early side of things if you look at the investments that you've made over many years had you bucket the different categories that they depending how you slice up messing while there's a whole bunch of different ways you could do it. one one could be by the type of thing. It's doing 'cause like nick technically working abroad Leila life sciences but that could mean like pharmaceuticals that coming biotech could be tools of services right so I would say really the space can be broken down by like what is the actual product the company's doing and I would argue are like very different businesses like very very very very different businesses. You can certainly break down by stage but you know I think that's that's more familiar so even within bio than what the different segments with him by that you might invest in right. I mean I think once you're talking within biotech people Muslimeen Therapeutics so you could do it by therapeutic. Daria and bodies are a their self therapy right. You could also commonly break that down by what is the actual focus of the company. It was on like cardiology are aging or something like that. I think having those tend to be the kind of broad types of categories you find. Let's keep this is helpful. how within pharmaceuticals like how would you break up that yeah. I mean Pharma as distinct from bio usually just means sort of like small molecules Olson. There is a lot less activity there though if you see things I'm certainly certainly curious right but but I do think a lot of the action has been in biotech therapeutics exp proper. I would say about attack that was what was the other Meta structure I would also met devices that ends up being pretty different world right because you're still kind of working with the body and within the medical system but the interventions completely different right. You're not trying to put a drug into someone system. You might be like implanting something in them or or something like that so in some ways it's kind of much more broad it's also different in terms of how the FDA treats them so it's a really different world actually really tools and services. That's where you're not necessarily trying to sell the drug yourself. You know maybe you're like licensing a key part of drug or something like that or it's like antibody discovery or right like that that ends up being kind of the most broad second. I would say and you can have. I'm very different models within that either of selling the services on a like cost basis to these companies or you. Can you know try to get some sort of future sure income stream from something that's invented using these tools create a new genus in this like within hierarchy flooding your oh you ask the tough questions well. I would argue that like the digital health. Slash tech side is trying to become a new part of bio I would say I don't know that digital APPS particularly. I think they've been pretty verse two undergoing. FDA Regulation I would point to pair therapeutics reputation as being an interesting case where they're actually the first. FDA approved digital health therapeutic. That's quite feet and that's I mean as far as I can tell that is like a genuine new type of company that we haven't seen yet I would say are we underweighting how or sector become well. It's tricky right like what what are the things that digital health can do for health versus drugs right Are we going to get a digital health. Intervention that will help with cancer for instance. I think it's hard to see a cancer cure coming out of digital health and a lot of the stuff that pair has certainly in the front of the pipeline is more like like psychological psychiatric right so certainly if the things where we know you can have a psychological impact on the body. You know that's certainly ripe for it. I think a lot of digital health people are less focused on. I'm trying to actually get an. FDA approved product though it's much more about like you know health and wellness. I would say which which I think is a very different type of company. That's not one that I really look that much timing coalitions in non software. Cs Relevance hard.

"Hey everyone welcome to today's episode. this week we have a special guest but before we get to the the prerecorded interview. I wanted to give a little introduction. I didn't do this while we were sitting with him. and I'm not gonNa tell you who it is. If you live in the Houston area you may be able to figure a you're out who it is. this gentleman lives by the creed grateful for everything entitled to nothing and the reason. I wanted to give a special introduction. It was because his company is very philanthropic. They've done a lot for the Houston community it took me three or four pages to print everything off and and I just selected a few so one of the many things that his company has done is furnished the USO around the world for American servicemen and women they have a crib Christmas giveaway. That's furnished over five hundred homes over the past thirty two years they house several hundred evacuees during hurricane in Harvey. They were instrumental in getting men anger clinic to move to Houston to provide mental health care to Houston by providing a four million dollar donation. They also established a trust fund for fertilize fertilizer disaster in West Texas that raise over one hundred thousand dollars for victims families and and that's something that we've talked about with another special guest previously on our episode and I'm sure Kyle can put the link to that episode in our notes. Also I want to note before we get to the interview that typically our podcast for twenty minutes and we told this special guests going into this that that's how how long would they last. The actual interview was only ten minutes. May may have been less may have been eleven minutes. I Dunno I kept looking at my timer hammer kind of in a panic and then I thought this is actually perfect because he is a man that went to several of Edward Deming seminar who is considered the modern the father of modern quality management and he answered every question very succinctly and efficiently and and I gotTa say if you can do a twenty minute podcast in ten minutes than you probably know what you're doing with quality management so it really I think work to our advantage to show that if you follow a process you can get things done quicker. I hope.
