"Doesn't know why this body is ongoing Except he's understanding is a Tiger in our coming just to kill or destroy the amharas And he's saying no one was from the family or anybody who was engaging in any active war But he lost almost his entire family He says accept the reality and give his pain to God Help us better understand what is going on What exactly is this to cry rebel party trying to accomplish Are they trying to pull away from Ethiopia or rule it I mean look they haven't said that I think this is a complicated conflict that has you know root that are centuries old but I think if we can boil it down this is a power struggle between Ethiopia's old government which are the people that the tigrayan party that rules this part of Ethiopia And the new government I want to ask and maybe too soon to ask this but what are the prospects for a ceasefire a prospect for peace I mean Ethiopia's prime minister at one point won a Nobel Peace Prize right Yeah I don't think I don't think there are prospects in the near term In fact I mean this week the rebels say that the government started bombing them and that they launched a new ground invasion Of course I mean if confirmed this means that the unilateral ceasefire that the government had declared earlier in the summer is totally off I did speak to a member of parliament who says that plans are underway toward a national dialog but at the moment all I am hearing from all the parties in this conflict is bravado And that doesn't bode well for peace I want to ask about the humanitarian situation because so many people have been displaced in this war already What are the efforts into get support to the parts of the country that are cut off What have you heard Look humanitarian say that the most dire conditions in this country are in the areas controlled by the rebels The government has imposed a de facto blockade in the region and the international community says that hundreds of thousands of people are living in famine like conditions And getting to the truth is difficult odds because the government has also turned off the phones and the Internet in the region And we have also asked permission to enter the blockaded region but so far the government has denied a request And that's NPR's East Africa correspondent Ada Peralta he spoke to us on the ground in Ethiopia We have another story now about supply chain bottlenecks This one involving actual bottles It's a case study of how pandemic shortages and transportation tie ups are making even a commonplace container hard to come by and it's driving a prices for everything from bourbon to barbecue sauce Scott horseley reports In the world of global commerce Danielson is a pretty small fish He's the owner and self described vinegar geek at lindera farms in delaplane Virginia We're a tiny little artisanal producer of shelf stable sustainable pantry goods Leverson makes vinegar seasoned with hand foraged wild onions and hot sauce from heirloom peppers grown on nearby farms The supply of ingredients can be fickle depending on the weather and local growing conditions but he's never had to worry about finding bottles to package his products until now The winds of nature are less daunting than the winds of what is supposed to be an organized structured supply chain But here we are Demand for bottles has outstripped supply in recent months and lieberson found himself at the back of the line pushed aside as suppliers catered to customers placing bigger orders He was finally able to find bottles in Italy They're now on a cargo ship headed to the east coast He's just hoping they'll arrive in time for the busy holiday season which typically accounts for about half his annual sales There's a captain of a shipping vessel who holds my life in his hands Basically if anything goes wrong with the shipment I'm screwed And lieberson is not the only one in this leaky supply chain boat Chief economist David ozga of the distilled spirits council of the United States says some distilleries are all having a hard time packaging their whisky and rye which could lead to the occasional bare shelf in the liquor store We're definitely hearing that there's a shortage of bottles We encourage anybody that wants a special bottle for Christmas to start shopping for it now because you might have to make two or three trips to your local retailer So how does this happen Scott defy president of the glass packaging institute insist American glass makers are still churning out plenty of bottles There is no shortage of the raw materials to make glass in this country And the plants are all operating at full capacity to make new glass containers But 20 to 30% of the bottles used in the U.S. are typically imported from Europe or Asia so part of the problem is transportation A lot of bottles may be stuck in the same cargo traffic jam that's holding up so many other imports and because domestic glass plants are already running at full steam customers whose imported bottles are delayed may have a hard time finding substitutes to the last minute Demand is high logistics are slightly out of whack There's import congestion in production is fairly well operating at max Capacity So put those things together and there's going to be some wrinkles What's more those wrinkles can feed on each other Just ask Paul guglielmo who makes in bottles a signature line of pasta sauce in Rochester New York We were told at least twice what a specific jar wouldn't be available for at least a month The strain it puts on us is you get scared that you're not going to be able to find the materials And so how do you react Will you react by buying more of it Remember how people panic purchase toilet paper last year That kind of stockpiling can make shortages worse while also driving up the price Pasta sauce jars that used to cost guglielmo 33 cents apiece now cost 47 cents a 42% increase before he sliced his first tomato Swallowed some of that increase but he's also raised his own prices in the grocery store I think the whole way down the supply chain everyone makes that decision and they decide are we going to eat all of this Are we going to eat some of it or are we going to pass all of it The stockpile of empty jars and Googly almost warehouse helps him sleep better at night but it also costs a lot of money that he just as soon not have tied up I walked by palace and palace and pallets of unused glass and of course we're going to use it and I want to hear it It should be here But I look at it as it's a big podcast Lieberson the small scale vinegar maker can't afford to keep that kind of inventory on hand Even if he could locate the bottles Right now he's sitting on big vats of vinegar and hot sauce with fingers crossed that his bottles arrive in time for the holidays Listen I'm a neurotic Jewish guy and I got.

"I trust her to save the earth? That's insane. And, of course, all of these doomsday predictions that they've made for so many decades. Remember when they said there would be famine? There would be no food left. It's a big thing in the 19 seventies, there's not gonna be any food left. And sure enough, we we've figured out had a farm for abundance to accommodate billions of people on this planet are the people who struggle and starve? Yeah, definitely. But the the left has just been completely out of control and wrong every time wrong over and over and over again. Um, let's get Chris in Marshall in here, Chris. Good afternoon to you online to their You're on the Visconti show. Uh, it's an honor to be welcome to partake on your platform. I'm sorry if I have a bad cell connection. Delaplane has very bad cell coverage. But You sound good. I appreciate the opportunity and I have a I think a rather unique perspective shared by very few. I have actually, for the better part of 20 years lived off grid Rand Private islands in the central Bahamas, and there was no grid and I lived off of solar and wind and Even did hydrogen sequestration and my problem with with solar in this area, and this idea that we're going to we're going to do all of this is Have never met a solar panel that was old enough to vote that was still putting out power and they Aymara ties these things over 30 years and it's a false economy. They do not physically last that long. It just doesn't happen. The other issue is you know, I'm all for solar panels. And I've spoken out at our border supervisors against different proposals here in our county. I really I love solar panels. I think they're great on top of every school on top of every flat building on top of every municipal building and covering parking lots to act as shade. But to put them on farmland is a no. Is a hard note period stop. Yes. And what about the reliability of of, uh, solar panels? What have you experience having used them? I found them to be. You know, I've done solar. I've done wind. I've done a lot of different systems. I think solar panels are fantastic, but they just simply that they're very reliable. And the beautiful thing about them. Is that as a as a power source, when you're when you reserve battery supply when you're when you're reserve power sources filled up like a battery bank. It opens the circuit and that stops the flow now with something like a windmill or water hydro system. Anything that's spinning like an alternator. You need somewhere for that power to go, so that puts it into it into what's called the Heat load or dump load. Basically just a heating oven it windmills When they failed, they failed an enormous amount of enthusiasm. Base fling parts all over and there's a lot of torque. There's a lot of maintenance and there's an amount of noise involved. Um so I'm not a fan of wind. I do You know, I really advocate. I love solar panels because they just sit there doing their thing. When they're in the right place under the right circumstances, You know their golden in that case once we've gotten every school covered with solar panels once we've got every municipal building covered with solar panels once we're getting shade at the parking lot at the grocery store. Then let's talk about it. But they the other issue is tax credits. I mean, it's a false economy that they they, you know, we pay for that they don't pay for themselves. There are fantastic option when there is no other option. Well, thank you for taking a moment to get back on the grid to chat with us, Chris. I appreciate your experience. Appreciate it. It I I always knew I'd be back to Virginia and that's where I am. Thank you. I'll spend my days Alright. Opportunity. Always a pleasure. Alright, Chris, Thanks for your call. Um it's fascinating. You know again, I have no no inherent aversion against trying out cold forms of energy. But I do have an aversion to like, You know, As Chris said, Like what we're paying for All of.

"All right, Giants. Making some moves due to injury. Curt Casali. It's gone on the 10 Day. I'll He's gotta left wrist strain. So Chadwick Trump Has been recalled to the corner of third and King. Sam Delaplane. The plane. Was very dated reference, but those who got it got it. Del Plane is on the 60 Day. I l Ah Dominick Leoni has been brought up from Triple A Nick Tropeano has been optioned. It is not due to the fact that he would not give showing Otani a pitch to mash to Mars. A couple of days ago. And, um Give you the lineup earlier, where Marie Siobahn is playing third tonight and batting seventh. Evan Longoria, not in the lineup if he has a chest muscle strain if I'm remembering Correctly. There's a fancy word for the most of that is train. Yeah, that'd be strangers. Interstate muscle. Is that what his intercostal hostile intercostal That's right? Yes, not to be confused with your Pentecostal muscle, which, of course, Is a very religious muscle. Don't stop right there. So there you go. The one that jumps out Rod is is the Delaplane. The Giants? You know, this is where Farhaan is Just He finds value anywhere he can, and in this situation, they're taking advantage of the Mariners cheapness. This is a right hander who was in their minor league system, a 23rd round pick. Who had Tommy John surgery in April, and he's a Bay Area kiddies from San Jose. But he had like the most incredible strikeout mark in the minor leagues who's a 23rd round pick. He's got a career to 29 year, Ray In Seattle's farm system as a reliever. He's got a 41% strikeout rate. He struck out 270 of 660 battles he's faced over his career. It's the best in all of the minor leagues, and he only had an 8.2% walk rate, so he's got great numbers. Seattle's getting rid of them because they don't want to pay him. How cheap is that for the next couple years, he that he won't be ready. They're saying at least until maybe the All Star break in 2022, so he's out all of this year, probably the first half of next year. The Giants are like, you know what this guy can pitch? We'll take a chance, and I don't know what the cash was Probably 50,000. Maybe maybe more, but, um, you know they're getting a player if they can just show some patients. Player with something to prove a pitcher specifically with something to prove when he is able Physically prove it. No, they got a plan and it's playing. So far. I mean, if you know we're gonna count last year, which I think it does count, even if it is a 60 game season, but 60 games then and you know where June 1st right now how many games have been played? Uh, some 15 change before. Yeah, thank you as they're sitting at 34 20 at the top of The National League West best record in all of the National League. The Giants have We gotta get good about the games here. We've seen the team. They pitch they hit they feel and the pictures that they have or guys that are Think unheralded is a pretty good word to use. And just like, you know, we talk about the Giants hitters having a plan when they go up there on that plan when they executed works out well for them, you know, kind of know, half fasten it with swings. You You got something looking for you committed to it. The Giants Pictures. We talked about it a lot. Keep the ball low work, quick, pound his own. You know if they hit it fine. You got guys behind your gun catching. They've strike out. That's pretty damn good, too more than likely. That's going to happen with today's baseball. Working out Well, man, they're closer away from the playoffs if they had a closer because I mean I really like McGee, but he is He's a set up man. And the more I watch Rogers. He's He's Sergio Romo except he's death on lefties. Um, So I mean, he's a funky looking guy who can pitch every day. But he's a setup guy. They need their cassia. You know, they need their Wilson they need they need that guy. Who can they can, you know? Close it close up shop in the ninth and feel really good. They don't have that guy right now. They're trying to get by without him. They were hoping Probably the young guys would be that guy, right? Santos or dove? All maybe would emerge didn't happen yet. S so we'll see. We'll see. You didn't get that piece. All right. E got confidence before around will get him and that nobody will recognize that he's the guy until after we You know, we all see him. Do it. You know, it's like 400 wired like it could be. You know, just some relative, No name guy who is a minor league free agent, and it's the right guy, Johnny on the spot, so It could be an interesting summer. Already been a very interesting spring just saying, Of course in a good way. Yeah. All right way. All agree. Okay. And then and we collectively take r R. She are our sword and we put it in a chief. That's right. We're all right. Wave my imaginary sword around first. I want you to know that I have this sword and I'm Brandishing it, basically, then you know, I took it away. I'm not just gonna tuck it away without you seeing my imaginary swords. I gotta let you know that's how I get down, man.
