"Uh winning the preakness belmont double is uh it's something we haven't seen a lot of i mean the last time it happened was oh five with the fleet alex um you know if national treasure who only has two wins to his credit right now the preakness and then a maiden if he don't if he were to win the belmont he's the leader in the clubhouse for the top three champ and last time i looked bob baffford has won ten eclipse awards for three -year -old champion so i'm sure that's something in the back of his mind he wants to get a championship for this horse and if the horse is doing well yeah it's a mile and a half but bob said that day after the preakness when we were out there talking to him that he thinks that the mile and a half would be right and i um think that it's a no -brainer if the horse is doing well why wouldn't you go to the belmont because you know winning the preakness in the belmont is not too shabby well i absolutely agree but i don't see it happening but uh i think forte is a five -link winner in the belmont if anybody wants to values my opinion just pay your money uh yeah why not run go for championships if you went to two -thirds of the classics you should be champion no it's a great point and he's on his way to the belmont in two weeks we'll see if he's good enough to pull it off and del roman says forte by five all right on friday before the preakness trendy trainer randy morse upset the grade two black eyed susan with tax now that's a horse he claimed last year at churchill downs randy only has 30 or 40 horses in his barn so this was truly a win for the little guy if i landscape of racing is going to make these types of david over goliath wins less frequent in years to come dale would i be right or wrong yeah right or wrong am i right you'll be wrong again you know you think about there's a handful of elites horses out there and then there's hundreds gunning for them and uh the hundreds got a lot better averages than the handful of elites first i off want to say that it's about time that dale has come on the forte bandwagon because that is one of the horses in my stable that we having our little competition with so dale i'm finally glad to see that you've seen the light and you jumped on to the right side of the bandwagon i'll leave that at that but um hey dale's beating you right now in the showdown so we'll get to that yeah but you know i'm i'm kind of agreeing here with dale on this one i did a little research because i'm apt to do um and so far this year there's been a a hunt i believe 157 graded stakes and the names plecher baffert brown cox

the inside musical romance musical romance has come again musical romance switch flying late on the outside musical romance to win it and musical romance has won it welcome to the equine forum presented by twins pliers obviously final furlong back in front by three za approval is second then comes wilkinson at the rail but obviously is just too good he's just running faster than the other four obviously wire to wire in the shoemaker mile to finish now here's mike penna welcome back hour number three of this memorial weekend edition of the equine forum here on the horse racing radio network all presented by twins spires of course this a weekend to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and service to our country and we certainly do that and we we we talk about them quite often and we talk about what this weekend means it means a lot for those families i told the story earlier about getting to host some of the gold star families at the kentucky derby several years ago and that was one of the great things that i've ever been part of and so this weekend i hope that you take time to remember all of those who have given everything that they've had in service to our country remember their families as well our three of the equine forum continues with this week's twins spires triple play joe christofek going to join me to kick it off momentarily kurt becker has his stroll through racing history coming up at 10 20 and at 10 30 del roman's tim wilkins both going to be with me for a really what promises to be a really fun edition of i ask they answer so stay tuned for that but our three begins as it does every single week with the twins spires triple play as i mentioned joe christofek is with me he has three races you'll want to keep an eye on later today and when joe talks you better listen joe good morning hey good morning mike how are you good good i'm excited for the three races you've chosen they all come from churchill downs and they offer something for everybody i think and we begin with race number four which is a starter and it's interesting you don't often choose a small field when you do this twin spires triple play so i'm thinking you have your eye on a little bit of value here yeah no always and you can find value in in shorter field so you know i've got some bigger fields later some value i think uh that i found in those races as well so uh you know take what the races give you and you know i think uh last one was on was derby day we had a seven to two winner and we you know swung and missed on our other two but if we could show a profit we're happy about that yeah no doubt about it well let's talk about this fourth race um how'd you see it who do you think is a little bit of value in here uh well you look over the field and you see that somewhat evenly matched but i really like a horse by the name of honest spree who is stepping up in class he was claimed for 16 000 out of his last start you'll see the margin of victory was 12 and a quarter lengths and it was basically a public workout you see you see the short comment handily this has been a horse that has been popular at the claim box has been claimed five times over the course of the last 10 months or so he's run well on turf synthetic wet dirt that was his first ever win on fast dirt last out going seven furlongs joe sharps barn has been red hottie jumps this one into a starter condition here so protecting honest breed and i'm going to believe what i saw visually last out uh very very impressive win and i think he could do it again you know these conditions are always so interesting these starter allowance races trying to figure out who fits who doesn't from a condition perspective coming out of that 16 000 claiming race in that big win i guess you'd look at this as being a bit of a step up for this horse yeah it's a step up for sure but he's competed at higher levels in the past and you know that was a one turn race to mike and this is a two turn race but he's had plenty of two turn success in the past as well and you know joe sharps going to claim a horse for 16 and want to protect the horse that makes me feel extra confident like i said this head is ups and downs but he certainly appears to be headed in the right direction after that last win which barely took anything out of them yeah all right honest spree number two seven to two on the morning line in the fourth race to kick off this week's twin spires triple play from joe christofek joe you go later in the card with the next two races nine and ten and the ninth race is a six furlong sprint it's an optional claimer purse of 127 000 and we get a nine horse field of sprinters in here how'd you see it yeah the two elva star debuted at delaware and won it first asking back in september of last year as a two -year -old took quite a bit of time off resurfaced may 5th and oklahoma park ran a very professional race that day was three wide in a stalking position in hand moved to the lead while still in hand but wound up losing a narrow decision that day to the three to two favorite unifying galloped out nicely with the winner and kind of ran like a horse that would benefit from having that race under her belt she's a half to sila a grade two winning louisiana bred that i'm very familiar with also very familiar with the trainer brett brinkman who probably isn't overly familiar to a lot of the people that follow church roll downs on a day -to -day basis four to one of the morning line alva star for me and i like her yeah you might even get a touch higher than four to one who knows but certainly four to one would be fair value on alva star in race number nine that is number two alva star and one more race that is race number ten again if you go to twinspires .com to bet these races which is what you should be doing when you hear this twinspires triple play you're not going to see a triple play specific wager there but you can play all three of the races joe is talking about any way you like if you want to use them in some horizontal wagers you want to play some exactus some trifectas you want to bet these horses straight you can do it any way you like but just do it at twinspires .com joe race 10 is the featured race of the afternoon it is the one hundred or two hundred twenty five thousand dollar kirtana stakes mile and a half on the grass and a big field i love this 12 horses mile and a half this is going to be a cool race who wins it one of my favorite horses in training i hope number five miss yearwood for ian wilkes who has run on dirt and she's run on turf and most recently he's tried her at a mile and a half at gulfstream she just didn't like the turf down in florida which can you know be a really horses favorite that are forward i came in last out they went slow early 50 and three to the opening half and i know it's a mile and a half race but that's still slow with the rail 24 feet out and this horse closed in that mile and a half race with a turn of foot of a miler if you get a chance go back and watch the replay it was really impressive to see and you know now she steps up the stakes company she's got a little bit of you know black type on the resume she's dabbled in stakes company before she's a four -year -old filly who i still think has some upside and chris landeros he seems to have a knack riding these mile and a half turf races we've seen him win several stakes over such distances and in the past during the course of his career particularly for his father -in -law ian wilkes really love what i saw visually from her and see no reason why she can't step up in class and run an equally good race can have to run maybe a little bit better maybe a little bit faster but at six to one in the morning line i'm all in on miss yearwood in the kurtana stakes on saturday yeah certainly seems like she'll be running at the end and we'll see if she can get the victory again great value there at six to one so just to recap joe's triple play this week we'll go to race number four at churchill to kick it off he'll take number two on a spree who is seven to two on the morning line race number nine he'll go with number two alva star at four to one and race number ten the kurtana stakes he'll go with number

"So it's probably about, oh, I don't know. One to a hundred. Did I spend a little time talking about that side of his life when he joins me at 9 o'clock? And for those of you who have been tuning into our shows throughout the week, you know that we've been celebrating Maryland horse week here on HR N looking back on the grand history and the tradition of Maryland racing in the Maryland breeding industry. So those two interviews will build boniface and Tom Rooney tie in perfectly. And help us wrap up Marilyn horse week. And I want to say a very special thank you to the Maryland horse breeders association for their support. They've been a longtime supporter of us here on the network. Cricket good on the team do a fantastic job. And I want to thank them for their support in making this past week possible. Last year they helped make nicks go week. A success here on the network. And Marilyn horse week was a success this week, too. It was a lot of fun to look back on some of the great Maryland breads in racing history. You're also going to hear my interview with Hall of Fame jockey Daryl mccarg. If that name doesn't ring a bell, Daryl guided 23 to one long shot master Derby to victory in the 1975 Preakness over that year's Kentucky Derby winner foolish pleasure. Why is that significant you might ask? Well, because the Preakness has always been known. As the most formulation of the Triple Crown races. In its 147 years, and that includes the race being split into two divisions back in 1918. The Preakness has been won by the favorite 73 times. Almost 50%, which is unheard of in the sport. So advantage mage, later today. Master Derby's 23 to one price in 1975 is still to this day, the longest of any Preakness winner in history. And as jockey Darryl McCarthy will tell you exactly what went into that upset. Back in 75, and he'll join me again coming up right about 9 o'clock eastern. And the 9 o'clock hour is loaded. It also features Michael blowen, founder of old Friends, who joins me to tell you about some of the previous Preakness winners and what they're up to now. 10 o'clock Scott Shapiro takes you on the twin spires triple play. He'll give you three races to keep an eye on this afternoon. Kurt Becker takes you on his weekly stroll through racing history at ten 20 and at ten 30 del Roman's Tim wilkin will join me for I ask the answer. And you know, one topic that Dale and Tim are going to discuss. Is the topic that seems to be brought up every year at this time about changing the spacing of the Triple Crown races. This year, those in favor of revamping the Triple Crown. Have a little extra fuel on that fire. Because Derby winner mage is the only Kentucky Derby horse to make the trip to Baltimore. And only a field of 7 will compete in today's race. That's the lowest number, the lowest field size, since 1986. And you have to wonder if some of the recent events have played a role in the decisions. Of some connections not to send their horse to the Preakness after running in the Derby two weeks ago. Now, as much as any time in the history of our sport, trainers, owners, and their horses are under an intense microscope. And if something were to go wrong in the Preakness after running their horse in The Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, what would the backlash and the scrutiny look like? I think it would be intense. And I wonder if that is sitting in the back of the minds. Of some of the connections that decided not to move on to the second leg of the Triple Crown. After being beaten in Louisville two weeks ago. It's a topic I'll bring up with Dale and Tim, ten 30 eastern and I asked the answer looking forward to hearing their responses and their thoughts. Poll question today, who is your pick? To win today's Preakness stakes.

This is my 20 year anniversary on radio and very happy to be able to say that I'm still with you here on HR and still happy to have you with me and still happy to be doing what I love talking about the greatest game in the world. You'll hear plenty from JT next week, live from Churchill downs with the Derby countdown shows Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. JT, happy Derby week, my friend. Yeah, thank you. Great to be here looking forward to Derby week and countdown shows that Bobby Newman we always have such a good time. Yeah, so many great guests lined up too and you know, that's one of the cool things and I remember when you and I first started doing those shows together years ago when we came up with the concept, you're right there where all the action happens. You have the owners and the breeders and the trainers and you're looking at the twin spires from across the racetrack. It is just such a perfect spot to be Derby week. Yeah, it's a great atmosphere and you see a lot of people that maybe you haven't seen in a while, everybody shows up, they want to see the horses train and be on the backside and amongst the players. All the trainers are there and owners and it's really a fantastic experience. So one of my favorite things to do actually. Yeah, it's great. Let's talk about the horses. Oaks, Derby. Who do you have your eye on in both of those races? Well, the oaks is a really good race wide open race. I was doing some last minute studying last night and wet paint, a lot of people are not on her, which is kind of surprising to me. I mean, her record is fantastic. She's won three starts in a row by open links, her late pace figures, which I know you're a big fan of. Are impeccable. They're all over a hundred. I mean, you look at those figures all the time and you know how many horses have 100 pace figures in their last three, not very many. And so I think, you know, if flavian can keep her in a good spot and give her a shot to run the stretch, she's going to be pretty tough in that, right? Regardless of what all the geniuses say about her. The other two that I like south lawns is norm Cassie's. Silly. And he's done a great job with her. She's one of the last two starts, including the fairgrounds of she looked really sharp. I had a little bet on her that day. She was 7 to one. Norm Cassie's a favorite trainer of mine. I think he does a great job. And if I ever hit lotto, he's going to be my private director. He doesn't know that yet, but I'm seeing it publicly. So I came back down. And then the other horse that I think is interesting is botanical. She's running a turf in Polish. She's never run on the dirt, but she's a medallion door out of a blame mayor. So there's no reason to think she won't run well on the dirt. And she's won four straight for Brad Cox. So, you know, I don't know, he's engraved invitation to pick her. She looks pretty good to me. So that's kind of how I'm looking at the yolks right now. Of course, anything can happen.

"And rattle and roll was off the pace that day, kind of got shuffled back a little bit, but came with a strong run galloped out well and just looked like the kind of effort that would set him up for a big run second off the layoff. Now he's three to one on the line. I'm going to need at least that price to want to gamble on him because of the somewhat murky pace scenario, but I think rattle and roll is set for a big effort and I will take my chances with it from off the pace. It is tricky to figure out the pace in here. It doesn't seem like you have many horses in this race that consistently want to find themselves on the front end. You have a lot of horses that like to sit second and third in their races, but not many to really set up what I would call a speed duel. And I think that's going to be essential for a horse like rattling roll, who's going to be coming from far back trying to pick up the pieces late. Absolutely. Looking it over, trademark was a horse that went to the lead in his first start off the layoff for Vicki Oliver and the grade three challenger, but that was all for freshening. A lot of times horses are keen and likely to show more speed. And he was also drawn along the inside now with Rafael bayardo jumping back aboard. I wouldn't be surprised if he kind of tries to stock. You've got call me fast who normally is involved early on, but the blinkers come off for Michael Pulitzer and he legs up Julian le Peru, which both of those things scream out that they're going to try a little bit of new tactics here. But you do have pioneer of Medina along the inside would be surprised if he's getting aggressive ride Skippy longstocking and tactical speed. And then the wild card is tawny port who hasn't shown much early speed in his career, but the blinkers go on and I know the barn has talked about in the chema notes that they're hoping to show a little more speed, get them a little bit more into the array. So we'll hope rattle and roll can get an honest race shape to set up as late run and you can get the job done as probably the second or third choice. Okay, let's recap the twins fires triple play for this week from Scott Shapiro in race two at keenland. He's going to go with number one ghostly girl and odds of 5 to two in race four Scott. You'll take number 6 greener pastures, your long shot play at 12 to one, and in race 9 the Ben ally, you'll go in number 5 rattle and roll. It odds of three to one. Again, we'll encourage people to head over to twin spires dot com to make those wagers and they can play those races any way they like, take your information, throw your information out, whatever they want to do. But I'm going to tell you, they do that at their own peril. Well, we had a good run of it on Louisiana Derby day when I was the endorser of one norm, Cassie, as you said it, and I'm hoping endorsing briner named dish junior and Kenny mcpeek works similarly later on today. All right, brother, well, good luck there. Anything in particular from twins fires the folks need to make sure they keep an eye on over the course of the next couple of weeks leading into The Kentucky Derby. Well, there's going to be a number of Kentucky Derby promos, including some best money back opportunities that are always fun. I think throughout much of the weekend, there's going to be a out capping the tipster type promotion on opening day at Churchill downs and then I believe the Kentucky, there's a number a couple of keenland promos as well. Just go to the twins fires dot com offers page to keep up every day with what they have going on here at twin spires and remember to opt into those promotions before you get involved. All right, it's got always appreciate the time. It's fantastic information. Good luck with those three plays today and good luck over the next couple of weeks. If I don't talk to you, I'm sure I'll see you over at Churchill, but if I don't talk to you, good luck on Derby day too. Thanks, Mike, look forward to running into you and have a great weekend here before we get that much closer to Derby one 49. All right, it's got Shapiro with this week's twin spires. Triple play three races, you can keep an eye on and bet at twin spires dot com. When I come back, Kurt Becker takes you on his weekly stroll through racing history and coming up at ten 30, Dale and Tim will both be here. Del Roman's Tim wilkin for this week's edition of I ask they answer. Stay with me. This is the equine form, presented by twin spires on H, race

"Impossible for one of those streaks to come to an end. In 28 days. To me, the more likely race to give us the winner of The Kentucky Derby. Is the bluegrass if you're going to compare the bluegrass in the wood and you're going to look at the horses competing in those two races later today. Because I think tap it twice. Who is the 5 to two morning line favorite in today's bluegrass at kingland? I think tap it trice is legit. I know he comes from far back and he's going to have to weave through traffic and all those things that usually aren't the formula for winning The Kentucky Derby. And I'm not saying he's going to win The Kentucky Derby. But I'm saying if it's going to happen from one of these two races this year, which I don't think is the wildest stab in the world I certainly think tap it trice has to be on your tickets. First of all, he's been highly regarded. Ever since he was a baby, he was a $1.3 million. Yearling. By tap it out of a Dunkirk mayor. Distance won't be an issue. And he certainly, after he won the Tampa Bay Derby, and even before when Todd pletcher joined me before that win, he talked about tappet trice wanting to run all day long. And having the look of a Belmont stakes type of horse. He's believed that the further they go, the better the horse is going to be. And arguably, the best race of his career came last time out in the Tampa Bay Derby, although his allowance went to Gulfstream before that was pretty good too. He's really blossomed as a three year old. And today, I don't think the inside post position really hurts him all that much, because he's going to drop out a little bit. He's going to sit back. So it's not like he has to break well and get a good position. And he's not a speed horse where if he doesn't break well, he's going to get caught in behind. Getting caught in behind horses for tap at price is no big deal. He's going to sit back, he's going to make that late run and Louis say as good as they get in the sport. We'll be at the controls. He should be able to work out a good trip. Even from the inside post would tap a try. So I think if you're looking at the two races and saying which one is going to end those lengthy droughts this year in The Kentucky Derby, potentially, because of tappet price, I think the bluegrass gets the edge. Hit show, the 5 to two morning line favorite in the wood memorial. He's pretty good. He's won three of four starts. Now today, no bargain. He draws post number 13, the far outside post in that field. So he's got to prove that he can overcome that outside draw. But if he does, doesn't that kind of elevate his status in your mind? I think it does. He will then be four for 5 coming into The Kentucky Derby. He'll enter on a three race win streak. And I'll pair up back to back greatest takes wins. If he wins the wood today, because he won the withers last time. Grade three. Now we win the grade two withers, are the grade two wood. Any pair up back to back. I think hit show is pretty good. Now, I question whether he's fast enough, he certainly has the pedigree to go a mile and a quarter being by candy right out of a tap at mayor. I don't worry about that. But I do question whether he's fast enough with some of these other horses. But let's face it. If you take out the top two in this year's Derby picture, forte and angel of empire who, by the way, great races from both of those horses last week, hard to differentiate which one was more impressive. They are both impressive for different reasons. But those are the two horses right now, they're gonna get most of the attention. If you take out those two, it is wide open behind them. So del Roman said on this show last week when he talked about running cyclone mischief against forte, again, in the Florida Derby last weekend, which by the way, cyclone mischief a very gutsy third. In that race, that'll put him on track to go to The Kentucky Derby. But Dale said on the show, you never duck one horse. Now, assuming that all things stay on track for forte and angel vampire, those are two pretty good horses in The Kentucky Derby. But I would go so far as to say, you never duck two horses. Because anything can happen. Anything can happen in a 20 horse Kentucky Derby field. It's a mile and a quarter. That changes the game completely. So yeah, I don't think it's the worst stab in the world to say. That one of those two streaks, either the blue grass, or the wood memorial, can come to an end in 28 days. Certainly can. But I think the more likely is tap it tries coming out of the bluegrass and winning The Kentucky Derby. Poll questions today. With those three Derby prep races. Who's your pick to win the wood memorial at aqueduct? Hit show dream like, slip Mahoney, or other, if you choose other, comment, let me know. Who's your pick to win the Toyota bluegrass at Keenan? Tap it trace. Verifying, raise cane. Those are the three horses expected to take most of the play or other. Again, comment if you choose other, let me know who you think pulls off a bit of an upset. And who's your pick to win the Santa Anita Derby? Practical move the favorite, go rocket ride, that's my pick, by the way, getting my vote. National treasure or other.

Sharita Bowe has this horse debuted at Saratoga took a lot of money into the teens of champions dream who won that day for pletcher, stalked early entire late, and then was given some time. And just have really been following this horse, came back on January 21st on a undercard. And everything went wrong for a young horse that day was green, didn't get out of Gates well with wide on the backstretch and absolutely still dominated that field. And with hammered at the windows, went off at three to 5, it wasn't even close to that in the morning line. And then much more professional on the risen star undercard allowance event won by dennington, where I thought coyote was clearly better than Dennis, who just got the perfect trip that day, not to take anything away from the Kennedy peak trainee. But this horse was much closer to the pace, broke well from the inside, relaxed along the rail a little bit backed off a little and made a run, looked like he was going to win. Third start of the forum cycle, now Mike, I think he's got the tactical speed to sit where we want to. A lot of these Derby prep races thus far have been won by horses from well off the pace, there's been a number of collapses and it's kind of led to potentially some fields maybe where we don't see a lot of speed on paper in these final preps. So I don't want to be gambling on horses that I think will be too far out of it. I think kiosk will be in that second tier and I think he's got a big chance to stamp himself as a legitimate Kentucky Derby horse. Hopefully you can get to the wire first. Yeah, co must be highly regarded because it was on February 18th that he last ran, and that was the day that your colleague, Joe Christopher, join me for the same segment and he picked co that day. Chaos ended up being second by a neck. That was the day that Joe went two for three. He had angel empire upsetting the risen star on that same program, maybe kiosk gets the money later today in the Louisiana Derby and that would be the top pick from Scott Shapiro and you can go to twins fires dot com to bet all of these selections that he's giving you on the twins fires triple play this morning. Give me another horse or two that folks can look at and use with co show in here. Cool. Instant coffee is the two to one morning line favorite. Clearly going to be the prohibitive favorite one would suspect hasn't raced since the lecom. So he comes in fresh for Brad Cox, who's got three in this spot. A little bit concerned about the lack of speed, but that's really the only knock I can have on this bolt to oral coat because he's rattled off three or four victories in the loss was in the breeders futurity where he finished fourth to forte and logins and red route one who all ran really big that day. Definitely have to use him. I think kings Barnes is a used a little bit of a wildcard shipping in Florida for Todd Fletcher, likely to be the second choice in my opinion and likely to be prominent early in a race that like we said doesn't have a lot of speed, big step up in class though from the race that he comes out of the Tampa. So maybe you're going to get a little bit over bet. And then the other wildcard I would use is number 5 disarm. Tells me a lot that Steve asthma sends this horse to the Louisiana Derby to buy on three sixteenths. He's only raced once at one two turns and that was a short stretch mile at Oakland on February 19th when he was beaten soundly by a legitimate horse in two eagles river. I just get the sense. I know they've always liked this horse and I just don't think Steve would throw him to the wolves basically in this spot. If he didn't think he deserved a shot to get into The Kentucky Derby in a shot at this $1 million per so I'm not going to let this R and beat me at what I expect to be probably similar price to what coyote goes off. Scott fantastic analysis of those three races are recap quickly while I have you on the line here in race 7 at the fairgrounds today. You'll go in number ten new beat at 15 to one, race 11, one south lawn, the pull off the 8 to one morning line upset, and a race 12, the Louisiana Derby number 7 coyote at 12 to one on the morning line three. Three value plays. And folks can play them any way they want to play them and we encourage them to do that at twins dot com, which I'm sure is going to have plenty of special offers later today. Yeah, a lot of good offers, a couple of pick 5 hit and split its both the big Bayou bluegrass, take 5 as well as the all states pick 5 at fairgrounds, 5000 extra dollars up for grabs, plenty of other good stuff on the offers tab and yeah, this should be a really fun day. Really looking forward to it, Mike, and always great chatting with you. Yeah, enjoy the day, Scott, good luck at the windows and we will definitely be talking again soon. Sounds good, sir. "Tim wilkin is in his home base in New York, del Romans is in shorts and t-shirts sitting on a golf cart in Florida. What better way to kick off this week's edition of I asked, they answer. Guys, we begin with Rick dutro and his ten year suspension, which came to an end at midnight on January 17th. This past week he was granted a trainer's license by the New York State gaming commission. Prior to his suspension, as we know, dutra was very successful. He saddled 1811 winners, which included three breeders cup wins and victories in the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness with big Brown. What should we realistically expect to see from Rick dutro going forward? Dell, you're a trainer, take it. You know, and Rick is also one of my good friends. He called me when he walked out of the meeting the other day when he got his license back. I have your person in the world. Let me tell you, Rick is a different person. And he's not everybody's cup of tea. But he is half horse. He will have a hundred horses within two weeks, and he will be back on top within the end of the year. He's a great horse trainer, and you know, he grew up in the business just like I did and a lot of guys to train horses and they saw anything he knows. He's been miserable for ten years. It's a missed justice in my opinion. He got a 60 day suspension. He filled it and they made it ten years. I'm glad Rick's back. My girlfriend's back and he'll be in Kentucky, so he's coming to king with. Well, you know, this definitely wasn't a slap on the wrist. I mean, they really made an example of Rick and I remember being at his hearing in Schenectady, New York for, I think it was two days, maybe three, for the gaming commission. And Rick is always and I know him. I mean, he's never been a guy. I mean, he loves horses. And he, I think he loves horses more than he loves people. I mean, he always tweeted his horses. I thought the right way. And if he was, he was found guilty of doing some things, he wasn't supposed to be doing. Maybe he thought it was the right thing to do, even though that sounds crazy, but the fact that he's back in the game, I'm sure a lot of people are going to be negative towards it, but the guy is a good horseman. And people might think I'm crazy for saying that, but I mean, I was at his barn, you know, dozens of times. And you know, the way he treated his horses, it was like, and you know, people don't think I'm crazy when I say this because I really think most trainers do treat their horses with great respect and care and they do everything they can to make sure that they're all doing well. It's unfortunate that he did get caught. He did do some things that were wrong. I mean, it'll be interesting to me to see if the owners come back to him, and I think probably a lot of them will. I don't know if he'll have a hundred horses, maybe but I still think that, you know, he's 63 now, still got still got plenty of years left. But I just think a lot of people are going to be taking a wait and see attitude on when he comes back and he's going to be under a big microscope. You may not have a hundred horses. He might have 200. Okay. And people want to win. And he's a good friend. We grew up the same way. I just think like I always say to games better with bob after the game's better with Rick Dutch O and, you know, if you take a look at you can knock him, you can talk about the number of suspension to add. What do you think? But everything has been basically very petty. And they were going to make him an example, but I don't see any more tenure ten year bans. For the same type of stuff. And I'm just glad Rick's back. And you know, there's some people that have been given suspensions and that goes through the appeal process and they may never serve them. Because it just gets caught up in the legal system forever and ever. So sure, a lot of questions around the things they will Rick off for too. You know, he was a poster boy because he was outspoken. He can't tell a lie, he just says, whatever's on his mind, whatever they ask him a question that pops out. Maybe that's why we're Friends, but Rick, it was a miscarriage of justice

"Betty's ready beat life on the Nile cyclone and unstable print. I'll just can't get enough of that call from Vic stopper bet. He's ready, crossing the line three and three quarter lengths in front on Monday at Oklahoma park in the 5th race and that as you heard Vic say a milestone win for the Hall of Famer Steve asimus and wind number 10,000, no trainer in the history of North American racing has ever done that. If you recall back in 2021, Steve surpassed Dale Baird as the sports all time leading trainer. That was at Saratoga and Steve is indeed with me now. It is a pleasure to welcome the Hall of Famer to the show. Steve, good morning. Good morning. Thank you very much. You know, you have kind of made a habit of racking up these career milestones. And these are legendary milestones, Steve. Let's go back to what happened on Monday. Win number 10,000 put me there with you. Take me through that moment. Well, he'd been stuck on 9999 for about three days with several favorites and horses that we expected to win. So I thought that it kind of proving how hard it can be to win one race made being able to win 10,000 that much more significant to me. And I was just blessed to be surrounded by Julie and the boys Darren even made it over from Baylor for the races. There's no keys. Now riding here at Oak Lawn and Eric works for us full time. So but it was a very special moment to be able to celebrate it with family, but only made possible by the amazing work that too numerous to people to mention everybody has done for us through the years. Obviously, I'm extremely proud of just like Mike McCartney and Betty's ready to train for Mike for 22 years. So those longtime relationships, Darren Fleming being forever assistant here at Oakland and just so much great help and great owners that have made a milestone like this possible. You mentioned sitting on 9999 and trying to get over the hump with that win number 10,000. You know, we see athletes and other sports kind of get close to a milestone and it becomes difficult to kind of take that last step. Why do you think it was it was so challenging to get that one more win? I think the significance of it is how hard it can be to win this particular race, regardless of what a particular race. And fact that it's what I love about horse racing. It's. Everybody's out there trying to win. You know, nobody's going to give you anything. You've got to go get it. Yeah, and you did. You went and got it, and you went and got it back in 2021 at Saratoga. Surpassing Dale beard. You were with your family that day too, Steve. Those two days, safe to say that those are probably the two most special days in your racing career or have there been others. For those milestones and those memories for us to be together and look back overground covered is extremely special. I think the significance of reaching something that takes a lot of time to be surrounded by family and to look back over the ground that you've covered to get to that point makes those two milestones stand out and forever special. When you settled your first winner at Rio doso downs, victories halo all the way back in 1986. Could you ever imagine that this is where the journey would take you? Yeah, you do. You do. Growing up in racing and. I was just unbelievably fortunate. I think having the perfect storm being the youngest in a 100% racing family, my father being a jockey when I was a kid and my mom being a trainer and having one older brother who, you know, hit the ground as an apprentice winning the eclipse is on apprentice. I mean, we obviously dream big and I think that with our parents knowledge and guidance set us on our way, but I would definitely think that keys and Marilyn asks and set both of their sons up to think they were. Capable and prepared us to do this. You know, I have a segment coming up later in the show that I do every week with del Romans and Tim wilkin. And we kind of debate some of the hottest topics in the sport every week. But one question that I'm going to ask them, Steve, is whether we should be considering Steve asthma and the greatest trainer in the history of the sport. And I don't know. Do you look at yourself that way? You want more races? No. And Dale would attest to, as horse trainers, we are you look back and you realize how much you don't know. So you're constantly modifying and trying to get better at what you do. And luckily, I am blessed with tremendous opportunities every year with the windshields and heidel rose in the stone streets and the horses that they send me that I can be put in that conversation, but it is definitely the quality of horses that were allowed to train that put us in this position. Yeah, and Steve, I'm sure there's plenty of people when I would ask, if I were to ask them that question, they would have your name at the top of their list and say Steve asim is the greatest trainer of all time based on everything you've accomplished, right? But who does Steve asman consider to be the greatest trainer or trainers of all time?

He will talk about the three year old division. He will also talk about today's risen star in about who's your Philly going in the Rachel Alexandra. Unsung heroes comes your way at 9 20. I'm going to welcome Ricky duke ran who is a longtime groom at woodbine. He's going to tell his pretty remarkable story about going to woodbine for the first time as a young man, looking for some direction in his life, had never been to a horse track before. And he winds up working in the barns, loving the sport of thoroughbred racing, and that's all he's done. He has always, he's done this for the rest of his life. And it's a great story. He is this week's unsung hero at 9 20. 9 40 Frank Hoff, the assistant general manager at Sam Houston going to be with me to talk about Texas preview day. And to talk about the situation now with simulcasting, returning to the lone star state, which is welcome news to all the horsemen there. 10 o'clock eastern, it's the twin spires triple play with Joe Christopher, Kurt Becker takes you on a weekly stroll through racing history at ten 20 and at ten 30, del Roman's Tim wilkin will both be here for this week's edition of I ask they answer. Huge day at the fairgrounds today, several greatest stakes, including the Rachel Alexandra for the three year old Phillies and the risen star for the three year old boys. The first 50 points race in the series leading up to The Kentucky Derby and Kevin Kirsten is the publicity manager for Churchill downs. He is at the fairgrounds this morning and he's with me now here on HR N Kevin good morning. Good morning, Mike. Happy championship series kick-off. On the road of the Derby yolks. Yeah, Louisiana Derby preview day, right? Yeah, Louisiana Derby preview day, great card here at fairgrounds, 13 rates overall, gets kicked off at 1 o'clock Eastern Time. It's a fun day of racing here in the big easy a lot going on to in New Orleans being Mardi Gras. So it's a lot going on in the city, but the action is here at fairgrounds today. Okay, so have you spent more time at the track or more time on bourbon street? You know, I didn't hit bourbon street. We did end up on the town last night and but you know I'm here and Joe Chris effect's office right now up in the press box all is well. Yeah, all is well. It's a wonderful day of racing. Let's start with the weather conditions. What's it like at the fairgrounds today? You know, it's pretty chilly out there. The temperatures wind chills are about 40° and it's going to go up to about maybe the low 50s today. Sunny skies on a cloud in the sky. So fast and firm conditions likely today. So it should be a great day for racing and just a little bit chilly. We're in the jacket, but all is well. Plenty of star power to the risen star, I think most people would agree. This is the deepest and probably the strongest Derby prep we've seen today. And then you have hoosier Philly, the undefeated superstar from the Tom Amos barn in the Rachel Alexandra steaks. And I'm going to ask you this question, Kevin, because this was the poll question this morning, and I'll be honest, I'm a little shocked by the results, is hoosier Philly the best three year old of any gender racing today. Absolutely or no way. What do you think? Wow, that's a great question for the poll. I think out of any gender today, you know, I think she is. I think the reason star field is very competitive. I don't know if the Derby winner is in the risen star. I think there's a lot of very nice three year olds that are in there, but overall, today, racing, I think that she's the best one. Interesting. I thought that this voting would be a bit closer than when it is. 74% of HR and nation responding and saying, no way. She is absolutely not the best three year old of any gender racing today. And with everything that she brings to the table, I thought that there were more there would be more people like yourself in her corner. Yeah, it's interesting. You know, it was surprising to me last week when we closed the fourth pool, The Kentucky Derby future wager of how much action she took. We knew that she would take action. And the committee, we decided that let's make her an individual interest instead of using the all three year old Philly category, which we did for the first three pools. And she closed an 11 to one odd. And so she took a ton of action and I think rightfully so, but the buzz is there with her. I just think she's incredibly talented and I can't wait to see what she brings to the table this afternoon. Okay, considering the fact that who's your Philly was an option for betters in that Derby pool last weekend. Does that indicate that they're thinking first Saturday in May and a shot against the boys as opposed to the first Friday in May? You know, it's interesting. You know, when I first talked to Tom Amos about this, it was when he was unsettling her after she won the goldenrod. He said, we need to make her an interest in the next Derby future address. It absolutely. We'll do it. And so he had it in his mind back then. And talking through some of his interviews, this winter, he's playing it pretty cool, which is likely because he doesn't want to think too far ahead, but we made her an individual nominee because she was nominated in the early Louisiana Derby nominations. And so they nominated for the Louisiana Derby fairly early in the wintertime. And so she was made eligible to run in the Louisiana Derby and so that's why we made her an individual interest just knowing that if she would run well today, she's eligible for that race. Yeah, all other three year olds closed as the two to one favorite, then you had the juvenile champion forte, who were still awaiting his three year old debut in the fountain of youth.

"Good morning my friend very good more this where we just played the clip type of this horse breaking his maiden Dennis's moment and have you. I know you've been around some pretty darn. Good horses my friend but this is that impressed that performance was so so so impressive yeah. It's bad in the best meaning victory ever seen so I've been around a Lotta. He acts like he's one of the best. When did you start to get in a sense that he could be this kind of horse like him a lot when they were breaking even then we came into us when the first time she prays. I'm working with some good horses. Nobody can keep up with it so figured we were on something pretty special and then he comes out in his maiden race and clips heels loses. Jockey Robbie Alvarado that was in June and then redeems himself of that nineteen eight victory what was going through your mind when you saw him clip heels and saw Robbie come off. That was a bad day. I was just I hope I saw the ratings. Were still in place in soap. They went come over said tripping wouldn't get hurt and then worried about he was hurt when we got back to the barn but he's sure got lucky that day and that's that's show how good he really is in. The stomach did get get himself up recovering. Come back in and Iran down to Orson wonder race and fifty Yup Yup. You know you were saying that that was maybe the most special maiden breaking performance performance that you've seen it. You've seen a lot of them. Nineteen lengths the final margin I as as he's drawing off through the stretch and you're watching that what's going through your mind. Well I mean. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. He just got widening and asks the Jack said he actually never asked him to. Rani said he couldn't tell us going that fast but turnaround look. There's nobody back there. I mean it had me shaken with so impressive when now he s a stretch out go to turns in in this mile and a sixteenth Iroquois later this afternoon. What have you done to make sure he's ready to stretch out. Well yet missed a beat. I mean the thing is you don't want to Overdo it. He's but he missed a pre work then on racetrack over day since handed and he's naturally should rallied the distance with federal great yeah he should son of. Tis Now and a horse that appears to be is talented as they come and just in case you're wondering they'll just two hundred thirty one days ten hours six minutes and four seconds until the first Saturday in May that's a lot of strategy for a horse. Do you let that cross your mind at all at this point. That's way too early. I mean you can't help but to start dreaming a little bit but there's so much inbetween here and we just wanted to get through this race if you're expecting superbowl towards the Breeders Cup. You've done pretty well in this Iroquois this again looking for your third victory. you want it in two thousand thirteen we Kleber and came back in two thousand sixteen with not this time. What is it about this race. It just seems to fit your overall schedule and your philosophy was churchill downs for one. That's that's how I need to know. The last ten years we deal with a lot of courses trying to make a derby horse or triple crown horse. This is the first step in the past thirty so it's just a pretty obvious fit force you know he showed a lot of speed going to the to the front right off the bat and that seven Furlong Maiden win. Is that the strategy. You expect to see again today. There's a lot of speed in the race so it just leave it up to the ACA Iran Ortiz. The best rat countries coming in around him breaking. Put him wherever he feels comfortable. Just try not to give him. Stop talking about that relationship. You have with the al-baas obviously you've you've had a ton of success in recent years partnering with them talk about that relationship yeah. It's been good I mean. We put a system together several years ago to try to get derby horses. We've put up. We've had a five years. I've got the three times and really everybody thinks they have a Lotta. Horses will only about eight euros a year so the systems working and hopefully this horse can get us there. A two definitely deserved win the big yeah no doubt about it. This horse sold for four hundred thousand dollars as a yearling at the Saratoga sale the phasing Tipton Saratoga sale last last year. What was it you saw him as a yearling that made you think okay we gotta have him well. We got a big team. That goes out selects. The horses got from the pedigree the analyst of the shortlist very park for not come through with the final say and he just jumped through all the hoops you have to go through the cardiovascular exam a skeleton exam he jumped through all the hoops and you know the price point we thought was fair for Saratoga. Especially four hundred thousand looks like it's GonNa pay the off. Yeah it certainly does. He's he's talented. Dennis's moment in the grade three Iroquois race ten at Churchill this afternoon yet a few others to you have three other maidens ends that are entered you have to in the fourth race in one in the eleventh race following the Iroquois Tell me a little bit about cigar box and fight fight fight in the fourth scratched fight fight fight fight. Colton who got started anymore else. He just wanted to stretch out on. I just want to get a raise at L. Cave you. You know it's funny. When you think about sport seems Dale you often hear that they don't rebuild build. They reload in every year. You come round with these top two year olds. It seems like that's all you do. You don't rebuild just reload this game. Everything starts on September. When we start on babysit hopefully continue to do that. You know the our goal is to win executor. Everyone saying the only way you can do to start with some good young horses yeah it would be special special del Romans a native of Louisville to win the Kentucky Derby at his home track in his home town would be quite remarkable.
