"Sort of known as this guy who eats and drinks weird things. It made him a brand. This almost sounds ridiculous, but is it fair to say that levis was more famous for eating a banana than he was for playing football? At that specific moment in time? Y'all, absolutely. I mean, I don't think you could even argue. And the interesting thing about that is I think a lot of that first story I wrote about him and that fall of 21 was focused on that. Like he was becoming this sensation in the story before this season about all of a sudden he's going into his second year at Kentucky as a people talking about him as a first round draft pick was wanting to distance himself a little bit from like, you know, I'm like, what are you going to eat next? Will, and he's like, I don't really want to be that, you know, let's let that die. We know that you put mayonnaise in your coffee. Shrimp. As well. I don't put mayonnaise in my coffee. Let's debunk that too. Let's put that to the spot. It was just a joke. Which I get. I mean, this is kind of the evolution of an athlete in 2023. You want all of that at first. And then I think especially guys who have been proven anything yet. Let me get everything I can get out of the NIL space, because who knows if I'll make it, right? I know that he has tremendous self belief. But he couldn't have had any reasonable expectation in the summer of 21 that he was going to be, you know, maybe a top ten pick in the NFL Draft. And so hey, let me get what I can get. As you wrote, he opened fall camp in 2021, third on Kentucky's depth chart. So it seemed like after being a backup a Penn State, he was really more of an afterthought at Kentucky as well, at least in the fans eyes, as you had said. How did he eventually rise up the depth chart and prove himself there? Yeah, I think it was just you come in week one and camp and it's funny because I do think the coaches knew certainly Liam Cohen the coordinator knew and what Cohen said was I wanted the team to come to me and say, what are you doing? This guy's so good. Like he needs to be our starting quarterback and not force that upon them. And it took one week. Wow. One week is the third string quarterback before one day Robinson, who went on to be a high draft pick star wide receiver at Kentucky that year with levis, Juan del Robinson and the other receivers in a week came to Cohen and Mark Seuss the head coach and said, okay, what are we doing here? We can all see what's happening. He's our guy. Let's go. He needs to be with the first team. And that's really all it was. I think it was that fast. One week of just seeing that talent and recognizing like, we haven't had a guy like that around here. Is there one clear breakout moment that you can pinpoint where it was clear that levis had arrived? Even when the season started interestingly, he started really slow that first year. I think for the first three games, he averaged like a 150 yards and 55% completion. It was new quarterback, new offensive coordinator. There was a lot of reasons for that. But then

My special guest this week is Marcus Shaw. He is the CEO of alt finance, which seeks to increase diversity across alternative asset management, he founded Montgomery tech lab to help drive inclusive economic growth in Montgomery, Alabama, via the advancement of tech based ventures. He was CEO of the company lab, which created strategic plans to grow innovation and entrepreneurship in southeast Tennessee, Marcus Shaw, welcome to Bloomberg. Barry, thank you so much for inviting me. I'm excited to chat with you. So let's talk a little bit about Wall Street and diversity. Wall Street has been pretty bad at recruiting black talent. It's been a stated objective for decades. Why is finance so bad at this? Barry, I think there is a complex question that requires actually a complex solution in a multifaceted solution. I would say the most general issue here is that folks don't have the networks and the access to careers in finance from across the country. So if you grew up in New York, yeah, you'll probably know some people that worked in the industry. And you may have some relationships. You may go to school with somebody. Your parent may work there. And that's whether you're white or black. All right. But if you don't, if you grow up in a market where there's not an investment bank, there's nothing other than a branch bank for one of the multi dimensional financials, then you're not really going to have an understanding of what that career looks like at a young age. And so as you get ready to go to college and you start thinking about what your career could look like, it's going to be primarily academic for you. And so I think that's always a challenge. They're not a ton of people. They're in the seats. They're gaining access to in this case, black students from across the country. They're giving them a look at this is what a career could look like for you. This is what an opportunity could look like for you. Here's what the realm of possibilities is. And this primarily is how you get there. Here's a path to get there. That's the biggest challenge. So tell us about old finance. What is its mission? And why is this a better mousetrap than the way things have been done before? So all finance is focused on building diversity in the alternative investment industry. Alternatives being venture capital, private equity, anything else? Private credit, real estate investing, hedge funds. Everything kind of outside of traditional stock and bond investment, right? The things that are more private to market driven often. And so our goal is increased diversity in that space by working with partnerships at historically black colleges and universities by providing students from HBCUs, opportunities to have co curricular programming, understanding exactly what you need to know to be successful in that role. Also to provide mentorship for students so that they're not operating in a vacuum. So that when they have questions, there are people in the business, people that have experience in the business that they can talk to. And also by working in partnering with schools to provide financial support to help increase capacity, not only for students, but also for the institutions themselves. So let's talk a little bit about how alt finance was initially funded and created. You have Howard marks of oaktree capital, Mark Rowan, of Apollo, Tony ressler of Aries. These are like three heavy hitters at giant legendary farms, that's a heady group to work with. What led them to say, we need help accessing black talent and we're not getting it from anywhere else we have to do it ourselves. When I think all three gentlemen, Howard Mark and Tony all recognize is that relationships help drive value. And so you've got to have relationships with the schools and

Penn state game and accounts what they did A week ago was really good. Well you know i. I don't have anything to gauge it on yet. But this just seems really familiar to me. Gene chizik first year and then Nobody gave him a chance. even recalled. Somebody saying that album was going to be alabama's little sister. Gus was hired and everybody was trashing auburn in in They turn around and everybody in the mouth and I just think that the georgia fans in alabama fans need to realize come into our house this year and it may not be well I'll make sure coach saving and gets that message. Thank you for the call will is in colorado springs. You're on the air. Hello will time listener. First-time caller wonderful. If i wanna make one statement. And then i want your opinion on something else So a couple of weeks ago you other caller call in and basically i agree with the gentleman. He said that this coalition or conglomeration. Or whatever you wanna call this pac twelve. Acc big ten thing was kind of a half hearted effort to do something in response to oklahoma and texas. Going to sec sec as a football entity only getting much stronger. I agree with him in that regard. But i would ask someone. What else could could these conferences do. And comes the punch line and i'm gonna make enemies but you know. Those conferences maintain some degree of academic standards. And the fcc is not known for its academics. Let's be honest here T to validate my point. Acertain certain extent. Or at least to show that i don't get much of an argument traveled around the country a lot. I have quite a few. Sec for the lsu auburn fans alabama fans. And when i bring that up academic wise that aspect. I'll get well. Hey we're talking football or we're talking the playing field in the classroom. So in that regard. I don't see much more that those conferences can do. I agree was half hearted effort and no one really knows what their intentions. I think they kinda jumped into it. And it's like the government figure it out later..

WHAS 840 AM
"del robinson" Discussed on WHAS 840 AM
"J s alright. You know what that sounder is? It's about Let's check in with the other side. The blue side. And Michael Bennett, host. Just the cats at 8 A.m. every morning Monday through Friday at 10, 80. W. K. J. K. Hello, Michael. Look, people change the bright side, not the other side. This is a bright side. Is it are we Are We sure it's certainly not the winning side. Oh, what? What are you talking about? That's right. Dr 100 in the league now it's awesome. Hang on. Yeah, one of them passed 80 school. Come on down. There's the UK misdirection. Hey, while you're driving in your pores, take us off. Speaker, please. All of my anger. I promise. I'm not on speaker. Okay. There you go. Yeah, but he's got like a poor station wagon. Yeah, He's Yeah, I hate to out you on your pores. Okay, So Kentucky plays today. Is that right there Back in action tonight at seven o'clock we're playing tonight. Yeah, we're playing tonight on the funny part is, you know Kentucky here they are five and head. They bumped. Alabama. L s u team. They're probably going to be any gambling tournament. So they bumped into if you figure that out. Yeah, but you're on the deuce. So stop talking like you got your on the big stick. I didn't sign up for this day to be cut like this, But okay, this'll. This is even though we suck more people like us. Okay, So, um, So Cal yesterday had some interesting comments, which were he might not have. Ah, full roster, and it wasn't because of Cove it What? Straight that out for people. I can't. I mean the way Cal is answering a lot of questions now in this specific manner. It just does not making any sense and is not boding well with the fans. They see their company. I have no answers. Absolutely no interest. Why you Answering the way he is and things kind of way the entire year. Michael. There's been a lot of programs this year. College football fans are like, Well, they get an extra year. It's fine. It's a covert year. It's kind of a throwaway. I don't get the sense UK fans are like that, are they No, not at all. I mean, uh, again goes back the way that power to me is on the things of marketing and how he markets his program, his coaching style, talking well this year yet People are living in the past at all. And this is a king he has recruited. Yes, there hasn't been performed in all of the credit for this that even but he's gonna take majority every date. Okay. I got a question for you. You know, I'm ready. The term fan comes from fanatical. My wife is fanatical about university, Kentucky. Everything. What? Yeah. God love her. I love her for that. Should give me statistics on their math team and the recall team, the rowing team the basketball sell that to see this. This year, she's checked out and she's enjoying herself. How much of the fan base do you think has checked out when it comes to university? Kentucky basketball for many reasons, not just because of covert 19, but also the know they suck. They suck. Yeah. Yeah, they really do. I mean, there's no excuses about that. I mean, the reality is This is not been cows here. This has not been Kentucky here. I have to say yes, and there's a good number. I wouldn't say there's a 50% that have checked up. I would say it's probably 25 30% of the fans that have totally checked out. And just wait till next year, But I think part of the problem People are getting tired of. We can't shoot the ball, and Cal has always emphasized that he liked. Athleticism and put that ahead of shooter. So now people are asking the village idiot, which happens to be me to go ask how that very question I had one guy, said Michael, I'll send $100. On just against merchandise. If you go ask how that very question it's also Paola. Oh, yeah. Paola. Yeah, exactly. Okay. Effect. Question comes up or not. Okay, now I can remember. And I can't believe I'm gonna say this word. Her name, but I remember back in the Crag Thorpe era. Yeah, I'm sorry. All right? My best friend likes to say what the hell crab for para. Right. So I I There were games where they were losing, and I was pissed when Louisville would start to come back. I was like I want I want them. I want Bluebeard to lose as bad as possible because I want cracked or I just I was This season was already done, and I don't want to give any hope that they cracked open be around now. That's not I'm not comparing, cracked or bring in cow. But when the season is lost, sometimes you're just like You know you're almost not cheering. But you're accepting the when the when the game starts to go against you and you just go like Of course it is. I mean, there's you're not cheering for it. But there's a weirdness there. Yeah. And you're exactly correct, Tony. I mean there. This is the scary part. You wanna hear something scary is that you and I agree on that, But that's where we're kind of like, Gosh, where I know this is this is this is even work, but you get to a point where we'll just go ahead and lose out. Who cares? Right? Get ready for next year. And there is the weirdness about fans, including the two of us, but it's like, OK, go ahead and lose it out there you two And let's just move on. I think a lot of us really wanted just admit that this season is over. And and I don't I don't know where you go from here. Well, here's the conundrum before you guys became a better than average football school. It used to be. Basketball was number one. What was number two. Basketball recruiting? Yep. So now you see the need to recruit shooters. But here's the problem. Let's say two of the best shooters are ranked 80th and 85th. And Cal has a chance to get number 15 and number 19 fans were going to say no, no, no, no. You get those guys. We have to be number one recruiting class. We have to be. So it's kind of a tricky wicket isn't not to change how you recorded it. Remember the story? I remember the night This happened when Band Van head a radio show on W. J F. And he was had the people that we're talking about. Horse racing had some trainer on and then somebody called in and said, Listen, That's great. I like hearing about that horse, but Was the basketball team going to do in recruiting this year? I want to talk about S O so is increase. The funny part is right now. I just sat down with Vince Farrell. So I hey, would like to look at me and say, Michael, if you want to say something on a 40 WHS about basketball, Don't we look for football? So we want to talk football, But you are having a good date. Recruiting wise today. That's true. Yeah, we are. We're having a great Yeah, especially with Juan Del Robinson, the Western Hills prospect. Recently committed to Nebraska. Now coming back to Kentucky. We got the kid from Georgia, whose book be the Number two line backer in the country, not Georgia. In the country. I mean, this is exciting. I mean, I'm getting a big spell of the bench right now. Okay, Well, yeah, Yeah, Let's let's talk contracts for a second and then worst case scenario, Okay. My first radio X amount of dollars to do this for X amount of years. Well, yeah, about halfway through that. They say, Hey, we're flipping the station. You're no longer employed here, and I'm like, Well, I got this contract They said oh, that's all one sided. It's all for us. Now. Cal has what they call a lifetime contract, saying basically in Coach here is long until you walk away. What would be the terms and conditions? What would be the buyout? They took out this isn't working. SIA. Nora, do you know the conditions that would be with for like a lack of a better term of buy out more money than you and I will ever see. So I can tell you that right there. Yeah, it would be a ton of money, and but I don't think that's going to come down to that. I think calcium and turning around next year. And we're gonna have a great team. We're gonna have Ah, great team in football. That's going to go to the S E. C championship gonna be in. There's the Cubs fan in yet And then also, we're gonna win the national championship. We're gonna be come to Tampa Bay of college. We're gonna win in football. We're gonna win in basketball. Lord, Here we go. I'm trying to find some wins for you. I'm trying to find some wins for you on the rest of the schedule, and I don't see any man. I don't see very many Here s O. Uh, I think you are. The pain should be over soon. Um, you're just a couple of weeks in the season being over and most likely are you hearing like we're hearing that they're probably going to cancel the conference tournaments. No, I'm not hearing.
