Trump Administration Auctions Arctic National Wildlife Refuge To Oil Drillers

"And now a story you have missed. During last week's storming of the us capital. The trump administration achieved one of its biggest environmental reversals. It auctioned off leases to drill oil in alaska's arctic national wildlife refuge it's one of the country's most pristine places home to migrating caribou birds and polar bears but the sale was a bust degan hanlin of alaska's energy desk joins us now to explain welcome. Hi thanks for having me on. Thanks for being with us okay. So the trump administration has pushed for the sale for three years. I mean republicans have pushed to allow drilling in this refuge for decades. What exactly happened here. So the sale received a striking lack of interest as a former federal gas official told me it was a dry hole. A bust about half of the area up for leasing got no offers at all. No major oil companies submitted bids instead just two small companies each picked up one lease and the rest of them went to the state of alaska. There's a state owned economic development corporation here the highest bidder on nine leases. But what. I don't get the revenue. The refuge is thought to contain a lot of oil. Right so why wasn't there. More demand. well industry analysts have said there's multiple reasons a major one is the opposition to drilling in this place. There are ongoing lawsuits fighting. The trump administration's leasing program there filed by environmental groups. And the glitch. In which is an indigenous group that hunts the caribou that commonly give birth in the refuge. And they say. The leasing program is rushed legally flawed. There's also just the high cost of doing business in the arctic compared to say texas and there's the uncertainty about future oil demand and the changing presidential administration. Here's how larry personally former federal gas official for alaska put it betting your company and billions of dollars on oil in a high risk environment on the arctic. Besides for all the grief you're going to take from the public from shareholders from investors. That's a big gamble companies. Just don't have the appetite for that anymore and one more point money from this sale was meant to offset president. Trump's tax cuts back in two thousand seventeen but this sale will raise just a small fraction of the amount. The government had hoped okay so the industry didn't really show up. But you said the state of alaska actually stepped up since tapped into buy up leases. Would are they going to do with that. You think right so there's actually quite a bit of political support in alaska for drilling in the refuge. They say it's a way to create more state revenue more jobs so the basic idea. Is that the state buys these leases. Which last for ten years and can be renewed and it could just sit on them and wait for market conditions to improve and then it would have to partner with the oil industry to do that. Actual drilling okay. Well president-elect biden has said. He opposes drilling in the arctic refuge. Can you do anything about the leases. That have already been sold. It's not clear yet what we'll do. We know that. Normally lisa's could take months to finalise. But we expect the trump administration to try to rush them through before biden takes office when option is biting. Try to buy back those leases when he's an office though that's kind of unusual also. Once a company has an oil lease. They still have a lot of permits and approvals so industry analysts say a biden administration could hold up that permitting process and it's also still possible. A federal court could intervene teagan handling of alaska public media thank you.

"And then last year at the Glenn in two thousand seventeen to Glenn. He was third and this year Glenn fourth. So he's got some talent across different types of different styles race track. I mean if you could finish third Dover. I think you can win a race. Yeah. I mean, it's everything's there. Like everything for him. Is there? It's just a matter of him actually doing it. And I think that that was the thing that was kind of holding him back as well because he's got to restore confidence in himself. I have to think that being A Gibson having to deal with that really shot his confidence down last year. So when you look at all of that, I think that he has to be able to build his confidence backup get that. Right. Set of mine and and realize all right fresh start new new new turn of the page new Team, New manufacturer, new new everything I I can go ahead and just go and race. And here we are. And if he has that mentality and just goes with the flow and adjust where he needs to. Big things could happen. Like he could be this year's Eric Merola in terms of surprise. Yeah. I mean, I I don't see like a fifth, but I could see him finishing twelfth or something. I could definitely see him get into the playoffs. Absolutely seem getting like maybe getting into the second round. But being one of the one of the cars out in the second round type of thing. I could see happening. All right. Let's do this. Because we've been at it for half an hour. Let's take a quick break. Come back. We gotta talk about Jeff, Gordon. And then we got a couple of news stories. Just quick news stories talk about so we won't keep you all day. And then we'll probably chat about some other crap to stick around. We'll be right back. There's more coming up on in the draft with and was. Welcome back to in the draft with Wilson. And was I'm Wilson that is the wasp were staring. We're both staring at the NASCAR dot com page. All right. Terrible website, always has been always awful. And and I was mesmerized when when I saw this because Haley Degan seventeen years old, and she got into an article, I believe it's is the Forbes article, it is more women to watch that bastion of sports and NASCAR knowledge, you know. Forbes. Let's be honest. It's no worse than any other NASCAR sightless not Kidder right about that. And the guy the guy who writes around. I haven't looked at the article. But the guy who typically writes articles for them. He's about as jaded as we are about the whole thing. I mean, he's he's he's like guys you gotta do something. Please just do anything. So so, yeah, I shouldn't give them too much crap. Although I have another article when talking about in the second, but they came out with a list of I guess what? Women in sports is women's sports women racing. It's women in sports. Okay. Women's sports. They put Haley Degan on their watchlist. Meaning she's going to, you know, do something big this year but on NASCAR dot com. It just simply says in like one of the creepiest headlines ever when hang on go back and read it for beta MIR Degan Amman quote women to watch. And to me that sounds a little stalker ish. Just ask the little. I don't think anybody thought about that. When they were writing that headline. Well, no because they're not thinking that way. They're not as broken I. But if found in another article, I can't remember where where it was. I wish I could remember because I really think everybody should go here. Let me see if we can find it. I can't even remember what the Tytler anything was just see if it's still like in my search results here. Do do do do do. It was something about. Yeah. It's probably I mean, it's probably so far down the list. Now, it was something about like the like they were equating the issues and NASCAR to like things that you can do every day and your business. And when I saw like basically saying we can learn lessons from the failures of NASCAR of late. I'm here. It is on entrepreneur another bastion of automotive and motorsports knowledge entrepreneur what NASCAR is declining popularity can teach us about responding to a changing market..

"The moment deputy marshal Bill Degan was killed the nature of the situation changed a federal deputy marshal shot to death near future officers and federal agents have taken up positions or under remote cabin near Naples, Idaho. Never before has north Idaho witnessed this kind of firepower from the federal government, and it's all because Randy Weaver Weaver hispan- because Degan was a federal agent. The FBI now had jurisdiction over the scene. Members of the bureau's hostage. Rescue team arrived the next morning. Jackie Brown to call them hostage. Rescue team is offensive to my very census. They were in assassination team, you you would have to have an IQ of five to understand that. The Marshall service may have been working with partial information on the Weaver family, but at least they've been working the case for more than a year, the F B I came in blind. And it's crazy. How much bad information they were working with? Law enforcement agencies thought Randy Weaver had experience in Vietnam wrong. They thought the family had blue be trapped the property or that they had armed allies ready to fight alongside them both wrong. The ATF claimed at one point that Randy was a suspect in multiple Bank robberies wrong, they thought he might be growing marijuana wrong. The shooting gave rise to new rumors that Randy and Kevin eras had fired on the marshals from the cabin using automatic weapons that the family had rigged their property with explosives that Randy and his family had the remaining marshals pinned down and refused to let them flee all of the bad information pointed in one direction that Randy Weaver was a very dangerous, man. On the flight from Washington DC, the head of the FBI's hostage rescue team decided desperate times called for desperate measures. And this is when some rules of engagement are crafted, which are will become one of the most controversial. And indefensible parts of this case from the federal side, certainly rules of engagement our internal guidelines agencies use to define what kind of force can be employed under what circumstances standard procedure calls for deadly force to be used only in self-defense or defensive others. The FBI's new rules drafted on the plane and revised several more times on the scene where unusually aggressive the final draft read if any adult male is observed with a weapon deadly force, can and should be employed. If a shot can be taken without endangering the children. In other words, if you see an armed man shoot to kill this would change things in a way that would be tragic because obviously the weavers are always armed as the FBI descended on nor. Other night Aho the weavers retrieved Sammy's body and moved it to shed that night. The survivors huddled together in grief and terror, they wail and cry and believe that they're going to die the here. Helicopters, and they hear trucks in the woods. And and they believe that you know, that they are under attack and that by morning, you know, they might come and finish them all off..

"Kevin was carrying a heavy hunting rifle and Sammy had a rifle and a handgun the three marshals ran down the hill. Staying hidden in the woods, then they had a clearing. They were exposed. And Randy Sammy and Kevin followed the dog downhill after them. There was an exchange of gunfire. Marshall William Degan was killed. So was fourteen year old Sammy lever. There's a dispute about who died I and who fired the fatal bullets Marshall say Kevin Harris opened fire and killed Bill. Degan a forty two year old father of two. The events. I will describe next or etched in my mind. And I am certain of what I saw Larry Cooper was one of the marshalls at the shootout. He described it later at the Senate hearings, unruly reg FD Teagan called out. Stop US marshals is I heard dippy Deegan began to announce I joined in. But before I finish my words, Kevin Harris, turn fired from the hip and shot deputy Degan. I have a clear mental pitcher of Kevin Harris fire in that first shot. There is no other aspect of this tragedy about which I am more certain. Cooper was a good friend of deacons, and he ran to Degan side. After seeing him go down. When I reached deputy, and he was laying on the side his arm in the slaying of his rifle he was conscious, but he did not respond to me. I tried unsuccessfully to locate the entry one in order to stop or slow the bleeding, however within moments I sense that I was losing him. I reached for the artery on his neck to feel for a pulse and his pulse. Stop beating under my fingertips. I knew he was gone..

"But I mean, what's what's the role in in situations like that of is this might Okon drill hormonal, isn't neutral. Efficiency is at all three or those different use cases. I think it's all three, actually, I think you're talking about a little bit of a different thing. So vegans, I think they have the issue of college session, fatty acids, and protein are nice. See that a lot. We ask our customers so you know what their diet is like. So I think in a lot of vegans or unfortunately, a lot of people go vegetarian vegan at times, just don't have the proper education kind of wind up eating wrong things which are actually pro inflammatory as well. So for instance, if you're going Degan on, you're not gluten free suddenly eating a ton of pasta that's not helpful to the body that creates more information and compromises the gut actually more as a result of that. You know, there's a lot of research now that says that God is highly tied to hair is actually fascinating stuff. They're saying that they fed some mice for biotic resulted in decreased. Inflammatory markers and in improved luscious for. So in the same way, feeding proper diet to or even exchanging microbiome, like fecal matter transplant resulted in full hair grow some individuals who were had auto sure universality, which is a complete loss of pair. They had complete regrows. I think it could be also your gut bacteria. They're not getting the proper nutrition proper balance you're getting despite assist and or especially if you're complementing with foods that are not good, for instance, the process sugars, even if you're vegan, you're going to compromise the gut barrier. And as a result increase permeability of the garden crease inflammation that results in hair loss as well. So I think that's one thing and then the ketosis people who are not. I mean, I'm a fan of the Cato genyk diet, but it's. And I. I'm a big fan. I can't fully do it myself because my body type is not is not adjusted to that after cycle in and out, especially women. Very few women can go full Kita all the time with without substantial problems with hormones kids xactly. So I think that's where you're hitting on the nail on the head here is that you have to be mindful you have to, you know, again, being strict about something is great, but nothing works the same for everybody. So listening to your body, knowing what you're feeling a hair loss could be a great way of, unfortunately, I don't want it to be a way of looking at it, but it is. It is a symptom as a symptom of imbalanced, stress response to symptom of a balanced, immune response symptom of something happening in the body that's not supposed to be kind of. Interesting. Just going back to the gut bacteria where you, you talked about that ago's of the show. Several times navene Jane runs a company called viola. V. i. o. m. e. and with their test, I've been able to get like full data on everything is growing in my gut, and they also track the amount of human DNA or gut lining, shedding this happening as a result of the back of the bacteria and the other stuff going in your God, and I don't have data on this, but I would be surprised if there wasn't a correlation between the amount of gut lining shedding and hair quality. So it's a marker of inflammation. So I'm, I've been tweaking stuff. In fact, I'm about to read a big, a blog post on that about what I've been able to do to control that that shedding of the gut lining in order to reduce inflammation in the body by making a few a few tweaks and is actually resulted in. McGinn even leaner without any work at all. So I think that could be an inflammation sign or it could actually be more directly tied, but do you know what species evacuee are going to give me luscious for? Because I'm down for that. That's a trade secret for now. I don't think the scientists out yet, but we'll probably find it right? Yes, science, there's a couple of strains of bacteria. I, I'd have to look at my data to the honest with you. I can't remember all the top of my head, but what would I do know is that there is a direct correlation to hair grows and hair health in general. So there's multiple studies that show that..

"Jim Ryan ABC news. On seven twenty WGN. We're back this morning in our CEO spotlight. Danville. Degan the CEO of spring see 'em, Dan. Let's talk a little bit about culture at your company. What's the work life balance there that you promote a CEO come work for you to enjoy that work life balance, I believe so and I think the best way to create that setting and to establish that culture and make everybody feel it is through your actions more. So than your words. So we make sure when everybody comes on board at spring Sam. And it's true of our partners our customers to they feel like a part of our culture, especially for employee's when they come on board. They'll hear these words, and they may have the kind of reaction that you did Steve which is okay. Well, one I'm I going to see it in the actions. Here's an example, when when we have our employees which happens from time to time, and while sad, it's inevitable that we're going to have challenges at home. We're gonna have challenged with a child. It could be a family health issue. It could be. Any number of things that requires us to sit down with one of our leaders organization or maybe the person to and we directly report and say, hey, this is going on. And it takes tremendous courage for someone to come forward and say, I'm dealing with this. I need some help. I just need somebody to talk to. And when that occurs in our company, I didn't really have to bring this spring Sam because Greg Buckholtz Buckhalter founder who's been my dear friends since he was my partner when I was at Salesforce. We're just like minded about this. He's midwestern guy. He's an Indiana hoosiers lived in Chicago's raised his daughters here with his lovely wife. Tina, and we just we never had to sit down and discuss this like this is important to us. It's just the way we operate in Italy. That we'll just say to that person. Hey, not only are we listening, and we're in with you. Let's let's do something about this. Let's you know, we've had employees of organization who've children have been. Afflicted with some diseases that sadly require us to call lesson gather and try to raise awareness and money, and we just do that. And I've we've done things with our foundation were we'll get involved roll up our sleeves and help raise money for causes that are important to our employees, and therefore they're important to us. And everybody knows when they come to me with one of those conversations, my first and exclusive focus is this is about your family, and then is going out with work. Screw it. It doesn't matter. It. It is not important. That's why we have two hundred employees you got teammates who can pick up the load to allow our employees and their family to focus on this problem that they may be having a family health with one of their kids with an aging or ailing parents. And when you do that, I think people start to realize. Wow. Okay. Now, I get it. Now. Now, I understand what you mean when you say this is about our people and the jobs important, but it's not nearly as important as what's going on the rest of our lives. Let me ask you about the economy. How things are going not only here in Chicago. But nationally, it's whenever we. A CEO, and we like to take that gauge how are things going your mind. What are the positives and negatives right now, I take comfort when I go to a restaurant, and I see a lot of people waiting in line. Yeah. I love when I see construction cranes. Lots of when my friends who are in the banking business. They how busy they are. And those are all great signs of a booming economy clearly were in the throes of a bull run. Maybe one of the longest in US history sustained and now that could be the next question, which is oh, okay. For how much longer. I have no idea. I'm not an economic forecast. I'm an engineer by background. I'm not an economist. But I'll tell you what I see which is the most visible sign of economic strength is visible through our customers. And so the industries that we serve high tech business services, public sector healthcare. We see consistent strength across those industries with our customers. And so that's encouraging. But also like about the economy here in Chicago is again, there's a pragmatism to it that I don't think we see too many companies getting too far ahead of their skis on growth. Whether it's hiring too early committing to big Johnson real estate too soon. So I still like that there's a an air of conservatism in the economy here, in the way business leaders will scale their companies, Dan. It's great meeting. You all the best everybody at spring CSM. Congratulations again on the of the deal and good luck going forward. Thank you, Steven great to join Dan del Degan, the CEO of spring CMU can find out more about them online spring. You feel powerless in that there's nothing you can do, but there is something I can do, and it's just show people through like a kind positive way that, hey, you can do this and your decision to do this actually makes a positive change in life. I think that's so cool because there's so many people who listen to my show that are really interested in kind of starting a movement or getting really active in their community. What advice would you give someone who's, you know, maybe they're, they're wanting to do that, but they're scared. I mean, I'd sounds like you had no fears doing this. No, I really didn't like it never crossed my mind to be scared of any of this. It was just, hey, this is what I wanna do, and I believe in it and I'm passionate about it. So I'm going to do it. Of course, now that I've gotten into it and as as it solely is turning into like what I my business, it is terrifying. But I think as a grass roots, you know, you just have to. You have to be passionate and just believe in what you're doing and it's infectious. So you're helping all these restaurants, you know the chefs that are trained, things like that really open up to ATI, non meat, entree vegan entrees, actually like meals and not sites outlets. Yeah, but you have people in the community. Not support. I mean, I'm like my right now has. And this is not everybody, but there disagree. They disagree with me supporting restaurants that have. Wraps or something saying, I do get Email all get really vile images of animals being tortured. I'll have, you know, and I just basically block them like they're coming to my sandbox and I get to choose who plays who plays in it with me. So I just I remember them and that's the end of it. But yeah, I definitely I, it's funny because most of most of the negative negatively I get about what I'm doing comes from from others. You can't so like it's a steakhouse that you've helped them? Yeah, and some vegan, you know, like maybe four entrees or something. Yeah. And they're like, why would you support the steakhouse? Okay. But it didn't like my is it's like your helping people see another option. Exactly. And and it's, it's basically like you have to be able to see the forest through the trees yet they serve steak, but guess what? By having this speaking menu, maybe someone that normally become and get a steak, we'll be like, oh, hey, you know what? Look at this. I want to try. This instead, and there's one meal exactly. This may change mind. Yeah, it maybe you started a whole thing for them who knows Ashley and not just that, but it also by by working with these restaurants in encouraging this restaurants to support their beacon community. It also shows them that there's profit to be made and as as as much as I don't want to be a proper driven market at the end. At the end of the day, these restaurants are needs to earn a living and needs to earn business intern money to keep themselves open. And if they see marketing to vegan audience as something that brings in money for them, then they're going to be much more likely to offer more. You can optionally, oh, there have been tons of restaurants, not necessarily in the US, but a lot in the UK lately that have actually gone from omnivore restaurants to vegan and had done better. Wow. Yeah. So it's, it's really, it's. It's working just to show restaurant Tories that there's a market here and that they will be supported and you know, and then it's also showing the beacon. Hey, look, these guys are working with us here. You know, we can have you go in and have a salad, or you can go in and have an amazing meal, or you could just stick to the twenty Degan restaurants we haven't. That's all you're ever gonna eat. If you go out to eat, and my goal is to make it more accessible and to make it easy. And by these restaurants offering these options, it makes it easier for someone to be vegan and not have the excuse if it's hard..

"To basically use a lot more tools. Yeah, seemingly for free. Very cool. Man. I think that's, I think that's basically all the pieces that that I wanted to to get through and we'd be going for for quite a while now. So maybe it's a good time to start wrapping things up. But is there any other interesting pieces or anything really important that you think we should? We should go over at all. So people kind of know everything they need to know to to get started with the tool and try it out. Well, I would. Say, read the docs and the docs for especially that the parts about testing. Okay. Testing like we didn't really get into that. Maybe that's for a third attrition. Yeah. Yeah. Like like testing is do most enjoyable thing. Impeach fee. If you use event sourcing, like. The being freed of having to mock things having to talk states and evolving a model that touches. So many like half to be unit tested in so many ways. Like it's a burden like lifts lifted off. I like I'm static about that. He's like like the the number one sale for me, but it's a, it's a whole whole, nor the topping, and the ducks explain it very well. And it's something that you really need to sort of from experience on our to appreciate. It's like it's one of those. Nice Hooman. All right. Well, yeah, this has been really fun. Man. I really enjoyed our last event as sourcing conversation. I really enjoyed this when to them. I'm looking forward to giving the the library spin and seeing how I can incorporate some of this stuff into the way way that I usually work and kind of see how things play out there because it sounds like especially after this conversation today, I think events sourcing could sound like a pretty intimidating sort of thing. But I think I can say that based on what we've walked through in this conversation, it's actually pretty simple stuff. Once you kind of understand the ideas. From an actual implementation perspective and actually using these ideas doesn't really seem that that complicated to me. It seems like something that's pretty easy to actually start working with. Sure. Is probably because of the effort that you put into making the library so approachable. Thank you. Thank you. So, yeah, I'm excited to give it a go. And it looks like a a really great, a great place to start if you want to get into event sourcing with HP. So. So what's the best way for for people to keep up with? Well, I maybe check out the library and to keep up with with your work on it. Well, there say, event sauce, PHP, Twitter accounts that I MC Lexa little. But you can just follow me on Twitter to keep up with updates. Like if you don't want the air, the rest of my ramblings with could involve things that have to do with fly system or whatever you can just just use follow that accounts. Yeah. All I just keep a mostly updates. They're awesome. Well, it's been a absolute pleasure. Champ Degan, dude, thanks so much for your time. Yeah, no worries. Thank you.
