"Because you love your bike and athletic greens. The daily drink for a healthier you. I had camped before, but never alone. So naturally, I made plans to go big for my first solo adventure. I was a budding outdoors woman, filled with wonder lust in a big imagination, ready to push my edge. While my all three go was a nomadic dirt bag, whimsically roaming between mountain tops. Reality looked more like a cubicle bound, type a data analyst in the infancy of outdoor experiences. My wilderness resume was light. One Knowles program, some trail races in too many visits to REI. This solo trip represented, an opportunity to finally step into the person I wanted to become. With three weeks between jobs in a suitcase bulging with outdoor gear, I boarded a plane from Texas to Washington. Intending to use every second to explore the northwest. First destination, Olympic national park. In my everyday life, I am a planner. But for this vacation, I chose to skip that part. On account of being a bit naive in wanting to embody that carefree outdoorsy vibe. I stopped in the uncrowded visitor center at the national park entrance. It was early in the season, so a still bright eyed ranger diligently mapped out a weeklong itinerary, beginning with Alpine car camping at deer park campground. Before reaching my first campsite, I was ready to call the whole thing off. The drive in proved nearly too much for this inexperienced mountain noob. With its sinister turns and fateful drop offs, the road had me begging to turn around, but was too narrow to grant a sympathy. Thankfully, mountains make me feel bigger than I am. So as soon as I arrived at the campground, the fearful drive was already a distant memory. I took off exploring the expansive trail network on top of the world. I caught up with two local women who I quickly sized up to be my idols. They had left their kids and husbands behind for a long girls weekend of hiking in their backyard. Pro enough to carry widen hydration bladders, they obviously weren't first timers. We perched atop a summit marker to watch the sun fall low. The water in my analogy turned to wine, as pink and orange smeared across the sky. What are your plans while you are an Olympic at the teacher asked? I rattled off what I could remember from my earlier conversation with the ranger. But I'm not attached to anything in particular. I quickly added. Excited to learn if my new friends had better ideas. Oh, you must do the 7 Lake space that didn't all hygienist insisted. She went on to tell me with great animation, how the 19 mile trail winds through rainforest and rivers climbs Alpine Meadows, introverts is an exposed ridgeline, with grand views of Mount Olympus in the Ho river valley. Any lingering hesitation I had was replaced with total stoke what I heard. One of the lakes is even shaped like a heart. Although 7 lakes basin is commonly completed as a backpacking loop. They assured me I could do it as a day hike. Since I wasn't comfortable backpacking yet. But I was a marathon runner with the luxury of summers extended light. The combination of altitude and wine had me flush with confidence. I had to do this hike. I had to do it

"O 8. Michael and sons peting tune up for only $69. Traffic and weather on the 8s, Dave dill dine what's happening out there. A lot is happening out there. We've got a few more days till Christmas. The rush is on and it is a hectic pace out there in a lot of places and early rush hour too. A lot of traffic. And with more distractions, take your time a couple of pedestrians were struck in khrushchev, unfortunately. And muddy branch road is now closed forward investigation at points between deer park and west diamond avenue. Road closed for the investigation. Crash. Now we can set a north end on 29 near 40, at least one lane still blocked, emergency utility work closing one 97 between powder mill road and old Laurel Bowie road. Again, that's emergency utility work closing Laurel Bowie road one 97. 29, I make that route four southbound slow through upper Marlboro beyond three O one and near the patuxent river only one lane is getting by a work zone, bad time for that. A lot of people are traveling right now, beltway, just congestion, no work zones, but plenty heavy on portions. Through landover, Silver Spring Bethesda, and Tyson's in Virginia on 95 volume delays got going early today through woodbridge dumfries and Quantico long delays though southbound on 95 toward Fredericksburg, especially on the through lanes, where traffic was stopped near route three after a pedestrian was struck. Traffic in those main lanes now getting by slowly to the left, local lanes are open through Fredericksburg, ramps are open as well. Northbound traffic heavy, but unimpeded, slow on the outer loop following 95 around through Alexandria toward the Wilson bridge. And a lot of folks are cutting loose in the district with early volume delays on three 95, southeast southwest freeway and D.C. two 95 heading outbound toward Maryland, traffic brought to you by navy federal Like you say, the first off tomorrow for anybody that's driving around for the morning commute. "This time you ready I'm rolling James and yeah that's a launch and that album came out in 1977 on Aristotle. Cream city. I remember I was in Durham when I was music great for the station that came in the mail and I said this is just the best album ever and I knew immediately it probably wasn't gonna do anything but I don't think Alan had any idea when he put rock and roll gangster, which he wrote on there that it would become an east LA anthem, but it sure as heck did all 5 and a half minutes of it. And yeah, you listen to art label that was one of the songs you wouldn't be most likely to hear. They did release it as a single on aristo, but it didn't chart. It was a great, great song though, and to this day, a big request item. All right, we're not going to spend too much time with fighting words because my blood pressure rises. But I saw an interesting comment. And she's the first time caller. So we have to welcome her. That's for sure. Michelle, in Vernon hills. Welcome to WGN. How are you? Fine, how are you All right, so tell me, tell me. I just wanted you to know that that quote unquote newspaper. A guy was talking about piece of junk. It's one of these. Let me just call political trash thing. Have you looked at their website? Because when you said that, I went online immediately like counting that to see what I was going to see for their main stories. And it's like fall bash at deer park in junior tennis player in recent Park City home sales and sure they've got some editorials of some guys commented. There's something different. It was put in everybody's mailbox. And their call you can't find that website. The guy was talking about. No, no, forget the story. I want to talk about the newspaper a minute because it comes out. Every time right, because that comes out every time when there is an election, only then correct. The only time I've ever seen it in any body has ever seen it and because everybody's been talking about it on our local Facebook pages, if you would read the fine print on the thing that's put in your mailbox, it's not a newspaper. One of these, I'm curious. So I'm looking at their core beliefs and what they're saying is they believe in limited government. But you're basically libertarian philosophy. But are you saying this doesn't come out regularly? No, it doesn't. So it's just like occasionally during an election time. They print an issue. Correct. I live in Vernon hills. I used to live in underline for 7 years and the only time I would ever see it. Would be around an election time. And it would be filled with stuff like the guy was talking about. Well, that's fascinating. If it doesn't come out regularly, at least weekly, then I would agree with you that it's not a newspaper. It doesn't. Well, that's fascinating. I would stand with it. If it was a regular, we come out weekly newspaper. I'd say fine. They can have any leaning they want. But if you're saying this only shows up. Oh, that's fascinating. Well, thank you for that. And I hope you'll call me again, Michelle. I will definitely call you again. Thanks. All right, so this thing is the only comes out in, I don't know. Because I'm looking here at about us, and they don't say what their publication schedule is. So like I say, I bristled when somebody will say that a paper, you know, is junk because it means more to the right or more to the left. But if you're telling me that it doesn't exist, well, Barbara in lockport maybe knows more. So Barbara, welcome to WGN radio. What do you know? Well, I started getting it after I voted in the primary. And my name started to get it. So it's going. It goes in every single time. I'm in will county. So a woman in Mandalay, I think it's a light county. So it's going to all different Illinois counties. And it's very, it's a very strange newspaper. It's maybe about 8 sheets. This is so weird, 'cause like I say, their website, if you look at it, looks pretty darn normal, but if you're telling me that, wait a minute, this only comes out at certain election times. That's a little weird. And if you're probably get it through the beginning of November, that'll be it. Well, they don't reach Arizona. But listen, I got to tell you, I am just enjoying listening to this art label. So interesting. It does my heart because I started really getting interested in music about 1960. And both the music that I was into. Right. Now, did you grow up in the Chicago area? Yeah, I did. Okay. I went through the Jim longs very record hops. That was definitely where you got your music. Sure, you probably listened to W JJ. No, WLL. Oh, you're a little younger then. Okay, 'cause JJ was before LS came on. They're still on for a while. But yeah, LS, of course, the big 89. You betcha. But right later, CFL, what they go top 40 in the mid 60s, right? Yeah, I think about that. I think I was in college, but my all time favorite morning mama was on CFL before they were top 40, which was Dan Sorkin. Oh, wow. Remember him. Yeah, I still have my save rose bimmer button. Oh my God. So yes, indeed. And you can do such a great job. I love it when you do the history of the group. Oh, good. So interesting. If there's somebody, I appreciate that. If there's somebody you ever want me to look at, let me know who it is. I sure will. All right. Thanks, Barbara. Appreciate it. Okay, so this newspaper only comes out when there's an election. Well, that's a little different. Like I said, I was waiting for it because, you know, a lot of people will not like a paper because of its political leanings. And one way or the other. And so some people will say, well, I love The New York Times, but gee, I hate the American spectator or whatever. But all of those things publish regularly. I had no idea. Well, live and learn. They make it look pretty good, too. And they supposedly have a bunch of other newspapers. I got to check those out, too, because they're all over the place. Well, all right, so it shows up in the mail and speaking of showing up in the mail. I'm sure that this is the same in Chicago, but right now, tis the season of political flyers. We're registered as independent. So we get them from both sides and get them all the time. And what I find interesting is there are four color. They're pretty big. It's got a cost a lot to print and a male. And this season, a 100% of them are not about what this candidate is going to do for you. They are 100% about if you vote for the other guy, you're on the road to hell. You know, pretty much. And I find that very interesting that we've gotten to that point. So 888-876-5593 Mike is in Mount Pleasant. How's it going, Mike? Okay, I probably got through. I called the twice last week. I've put out holds here and holds over half an hour more times and never got through. Well, thank you for your perseverance. Well, there's a very rare song that Loretta lyn did with of all people Jack White. It's a hard hitting song. I don't know how I came

We'd go there and get doughnuts for the little league football games and stuff but it's called the donut hole and they rock keeping whoever. Don't don't don't even touch the doughnut holes How do you how do you. Oh well no no. no no. No athletic glazed me. Glaze neat only did i. Don't oh did they. They were awesome. What i remember. 'cause i we live in deer park and we stopped the donut hole. The demand answered the phone. He knows about the donut hole. He he's living pasa. Get down so I lived in park but my dad found the donut hole. One time. oh no you. Don't you don't hippie. Don't don't touch the doughnut hole. What you know what. I don't understand and i've said this for years when you deliver donuts when you get doughnuts for the for the office or whatever else the guy who's going in is always worried that he's going to get the order right. He's just you know you just doing it to be nice right whether you're a salesman or the balls or whatever so they'll say all right we got x. Number of people. I'm gonna get x. number of doughnuts and they'll say Let's say you got eight people in the office so you get a dozen donuts because it's girls because it if it's a working class office a dozen donuts would be for two people so you go to get the donuts and the guy says you know. He'll say they'll say you. How how what's what's the mix. What you ought to do is get a dozen glazed donuts and be done. And then everybody's happy right. Stopped union ramon. Everybody's happy but what are you doing. Stead let's see. I'll get surrogate six glazed and then i'll get one each of crappy donuts so it'll be jelly field and that yellow jelly field. That yellow thing. I don't even know what that thing is. Strawberry fields shut up Let's do a toasted pecan or toasted coconut. I don't know what the hell and so then here's what happens. I i hate is doughnuts in the kitchen. If anybody wants them. Boom two guys go down there. They knock out those six doughnuts. They don't have another doughnut each. But they don't wanna mess the crap donuts in. That's what it's what you left with. Is a crap donut. So now you got those other six donuts now through the course of the morning. Somebody'll come in there and go. Oh i guess they took all the glazed well. Okay i guess if i hate this thing up and get a fork and a knife and eat it that wagon eat a bite of it and so that's what they'll do. Somebody that was really really wanted to glaze. Dona will now take one of the jellyfish donuts and they'll cut a corner of it and they lied to by and it was okay and then they'll throw it away and by eleven o'clock or noon. There's a sad lookin' in box of four donuts left in there that nobody touched. If those had been glazed they'd be gone. If i can do a little bit of good today it will be if you're the guy that orders for the office unless somebody specifically says i want xyz donut and they are going to eat that donut. Don't get anything but glazed. Everybody likes glazed. it's the lowest common denominator. everybody likes place almost. Nobody likes that specialty donut. Now you might say well. Why do they make it if you'll notice they don't make many of them because there is the guy that comes in but that god doesn't work for you and if he does he's only one of them. Nobody likes anything but glazed donuts. Michael okay. yeah you do. But you'll eat the glazed doughnut before you eat that. See unless that is your favorite doughnut. Then don't even comment because you would have been just as happy with a glazed donut. Solve the problem. Just do glaze donuts. That's it that's it and that's all. Don't even get me going on collage. They won his property. That's what several people have told me. But whatever the issue here what are we talking about. Oh collages the issue here. When people have to argue with that is they just want to tell you. I'm of czech heritage. Okay now that we've done that. Can we talk about whatever. "Us. But I still live in Rose Hill, Texas for lack of a better way of defining this. By the way, remind everybody. Where'd you go to high school here? You were from the local area. So where do you wanna ask your part? Deer Park, Okay. But we now know that so when you call it see No Andrew from Deer Park, and then you can be very brief with Andrew. So like we had our first question of the barrel today was pomegranates. And then we had a compost question on fertilization Question and about Japanese you for Ruthie's, as example, just What's the subject matter? You want to talk to me in detail about it. It could be very, very brief with the young age a 713 to 1 to Katie Rage If you want a chance at winning these books, the book My book, New Decade gardening, a Gulf Coast guide and then one from the prize pool. Of all the books that I get throughout the year since we're not gonna be doing a home and garden show in January, where I usually just give them away. If someone buys like my book and a home and garden show, then I just kind of giving them one of these. On. They're fun, and they're good at a lot of quality books. I just don't need them all of, say the 20 plus books that I'll get in the year. All right. I'll keep maybe two of them. So I've got a few over here that we can give away if you just want my book. That's fine to just make sure you tell that to the young age when we fill out your form, and he's going to ask you for if you are winner is going to ask you for details like your address because you're gonna have to confirm that when you come to pick it up at the radio station If you have no desire to get out or get to the radio station. Right. And you gotta be willing to do this within 90 days because they will clean out the prize closet every 90 days, and they'll kind of recycle everything back and it won't be here with your name on it and 90 days if you don't pick it up. And don't want to pick it up within the next 90 days. Then be honest. And let's just say you know what? Probably not gonna come pick it up. So you put those books back into the price pool. Are we all clear on that? Just got to be willing to give your Specific address information to the young age because he has to fill out the form for you, and then we'll also determine which of the extra books you get. I'll get through those when we have our first winner. There's a great question that stumped, Uh, Nikki walking out during the theme music playing. I'll ask this of you. I don't know if you had our mikes on in the background over there, but what Strawberry Is the only fruit to bear its seeds on the outside. You have any wild guesses in their young aging? What fruit is the only fruit that bears its seeds on the outside? Apricot. Apricot seeds on the inside. It was a good game. You are the weakest link they could. Goodbye. Is it Strawberry? Think about all the seeds on the outside. It has the average Strawberry has How many seeds Tandy. 20 50 100. Say 5100, but you were close. I'm impressed. So those kind of things we could throw your way or it could be 1962 trivial. Yesterday we had a couple of good 1962 trivia. I was just certain I nailed the one about the Corvette but turned out was wrong. And then that brought up the what would I do if I was uber rich? If I like 1 $450 Million lottery were the first things I do is go out. Buy me in 1962 Corvette because it is my birth year. And it's one of the coolest looking models of the Corvette ever s O. I would do that. And then I know the other thing. You may not get this yet until you're like making your own food all the time. When you're like, start liking, cooking and going out fine dining, but I would hire Brian Streeter. I think I should call him James Street yesterday. Brian Streeter, the chef away from the cake, bread wine ring. He could be my full time chef that if I were over rich and I could hire my own full time chef, they would have to hire Brian Streeter away from Cakebread Winery. There's a whole story behind that we won't get into right now. So here we go. Questions 713 to 12 K traits. You just want to ask me a question garden question. You give your name where you calling from and briefly. What do you want to talk to me in detail about you do that with Andrew and he'll get you up on the board. If you want to ask me a trivia question as a means turn the book. Then you can call 713 to 1 to ktrh as well or let's flip it back to normal trade. So that would be reversed. Trivia. If you're gonna ask me the question, But if you want me to ask you a gardening travel trivia question, or even in 1962 trivia question, because that's maybe your Berthier too. Sometimes we can handle those questions little bit better than the gardening questions. But we will do it one way or the other as a means to give away the books Because if you're just now tuning in tomorrow, January, 4th is my birthday. And that's why we give away the gifts here on guard line. When it's my birthday. I'm giving you the gifts. But that's way we've had fun with it for years here on the guard line, 713 to 1 to ktrh that 713 to 125874. And also, I'm gonna throw one more trivia question Andrew's way, because I found out off the air that he A Z young, as he is is was a fan and has binge watched breaking bad. So if you are really good at that kind of trivia to breaking battery, well, here's one that's horticultural. You're related. Name. The plant. That he poisoned.

Not when the initial occupancy of the mansion turned out to be so very, very strange. Henry was grateful that his father and past he would never say so loud but he could not be happier. He had long toiled in the shadows of Thomas Reynolds Morton look first earl of Ducie. While the reward of inherited title was a nice reward for his time. It wasn't enough Thomas expected a lot out of him henry heated the permanence near the Thomas War around his son the constant lack of approval had driven Henry to dark thoughts. It was unfair that someone who had so much could feel as though they were nothing. He'd contemplated killing his own father regularly. It wished for his father's death a thousand times. But wishes weren't enough. At night he trump of sneaking into his father's room and crushing his windpipe Thomas, Cole ties would stare back at him in defiance but Henry would only press harder. He would steal every ounce of paint from his father that he could. He would revel in at even. This was the retribution he deserved. But by the time, he finally summoned the courage to act on his feelings fate had intervened. His father was dead and Henry would be able to keep his soul free at sin. He should have been overjoyed, but there was a part of him. That was disappointed. Henry had wanted to watch the life leave is father's is. Instead, S. he stood in the church on that summer morning he saw the corpse of an older man that felt nothing like his father. This husk of a person wasn't even the slightest bit intimidating. He was justice Shell Serene still. No fire behind the size no disapproving sneer. To the best of his knowledge Thomas Reynolds, Morton had never looked serene is life. Death was as the saying goes the great equalizer Henry didn't WanNA. Feel equal to his father he wanted to feel better that him. His shock at being robbed of the chance to end his father's life was eventually swallowed by his own greed. He held the title and the purse strings that once belonged to Thomas. The legacy had been passed onto him and he could do whatever he wanted with that power. His first act of filial disobedience was going to be a party. He would holden enchanted forest themed masquerade at his father's last real estate acquisition but converted Hunting Lodge in Winchester Park. It was still under construction, but the ballroom was mostly finished and the incomplete designed would really add to the atmosphere. Henry woke with a sense of clear purpose on the day of the party even though he held the title for weeks, this would be his entrance into high society as an earl. The people would give him the respect they never gave his father. A. Played softly as Henry mingled with his guests, he welcomed as many people as he could bobbing out of conversations whenever he grew tired of the subject matter. Most of these guests were more his father's friends than his. He despised them, but he couldn't resist the chance to hold his new title and the imminent chaos heads. He outranked nearly all of them now. Though the event was a masquerade few visit guests had been particularly inventive. There was fun and trying to guess who everyone was. Something always gave them away the gate, the bone structure, the laugh. There were at least four uninspiring looking deer and far too many rakish second sons had decided to come as wolves. But there was one person Henry didn't know. A strange masked man was weaving his way through the crowd. He had never introduced himself and his body language was unfamiliar. Henry tried to get closer, but he struggled to even get a clear view of the masked man. The pushed through the of gentry ignoring their complaints. Finally. When the crowd parted they met. The mysterious man was standing still gazing out one of the large glazed windows to the forest behind. And redrew closer and put one gloved hand on the man's shelter. The did not turn around.

"Maybe we'll start with. Way Your interest in Mahamoud. Way Did that how did that come about? When was that? So since by had? I probably I got interested in Mahamoud per se early in Grad school or perhaps a little bit before that might regional interest in Buddhism back in high school days early in college was mostly in San and I always expected that would be the form of Buddhism than I ended up practicing but the as says avid my then girlfriend now wife and I ended up traveling overland India in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, three into nineteen, seventy four, and then ended up at coupon monastery just outside. Katmandu where we studied where Rama Tipton yesterday in London Lumberton. And those famous co concourses which are still ongoing by merrily introductions allom Rim to the stages of the path of course. Llamas, OBA has a particular particularly in those days maybe a little. So I don't know He had a particular teaching style wary if you're at a month course, you could pretty much be sure that half the time was going to be spent in the lower rounds. So he did delight in. Those and Mama yesterday would, of course come in and remind us that we all had put a nature. So it was kind of A. Tough. Cop Nice cop routine and away. And you know he was he was a it was kind of overwhelming for me despite my interest. But as despite my having majored in religion in college and so forth. But. All the complication you know both the details of rim, how Karma works all the different realms, the scholastic arguments back and forth about beginning less mind an emptiness and so forth all of it was incredibly impressive. They were particularly impressive as practitioners as people who lived out what they had studied on what they were teaching but I I also began in in the few the few hours that were that I had hadn't disposal to to read. I think it was probably some poems by Miller wrap up where Branson book by John Blow Fouls, which just had a little bit of discussion. Mahmoud. and. The way the way I took it brightly. At times this reminds me a lot of ZAP it a bid, it short circuits all the detail, all the ritual, all the scholasticism. All those kinds of things that just tells you to realize the nature of your mind. So it appealed to me. Even that? Sort of a a hidden card. Yuba. Lurking inside this is fledgling gay look back. And I kept that in mind when. Year or so you're a half later I ended up graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, studying under shapes up SOPA. who was the first as far as I know the first Betton tenure at American University, certainly the first Tibetan guess. Who was tenured at American University and again to to study with guesses OPA both in the context of the graduate program that Wisconsin and at the deer park would a center as it's now called. Founded. In the mid seventies was too steep yourself in again are a great deal of the the complexity, the ritual, the richness, certainly of of the gaylord actual tradition and once again. The. Reading Mamo drawn decide what kind of balanced helped balance things out for me. So the number of the papers I wrote at Grad School, you know we're on the Mosit- as of India or or soccer punditocracy critiques of Mahamoud, draw various topics like that. So I, you know even in Grad school I I had this interest You know it sometimes said about Chinese practitioners. They're confusions during the day and Taoists. At Night I. Think a part of me that's was during the day and At night. Of course went when I began to discover that was that there was a whole Gaelic tradition of Mambo. I'd been vaguely aware of because it was a little translation that had come out at the library of Tibetan works in archives and. I read through that and So you know after I got Grad school sort of begun by my teaching career. I. Along with rank, of course, bring my dissertation into book form of pretty much everybody wants to do at some point are almost everybody wants to. Buy began to again sort of on the side begin to begin to investigate Gaylord Mabul dress, and so that's at least in terms of the genesis of this I. Guess That's That's how I would I would explain it. In a this dungeon have any. Teachers. Teaching. Mahmoud to you know you know during we went and saw on trump shays league. Once in Chicago he was notoriously late. He was typically drinking soccer when he was typically brilliant. So you know everything we had heard was true. And I think later in the seventies and into the eighties I began to to go occasionally to cognitive teacher but no, I did not have a regular. Teacher and I. I guess it's fair to say that I really never had a sort of regular teacher although in more recent years I've studied some weakening. European. Fortunately for us has his world had ordered in Minneapolis just. Just a few miles from where we live. So now, my my interest I mean I was interested in cognitive because if you're interested in mom will address even from the Gaylord stand going you clearly have to begin researching. Kogyo because. Even, some texts presents the. Is Fine Llamas. Book with. Alex. burs. The gala argue slash kagyu tradition of Mahamoud address. Implies that it's a kind of a sing credit tradition or a synthetic traditional might be a slightly better word So you and it's very clear that the first Panchen Lama who was one of the tutors of style on one of the truly great figures Gael history. He clearly was familiar with cargill literature and and it would seem with some Kogyo practices so. In my in the process of beginning to research, Ma Gala Mambo. Dry Inevitably had to begin reading at least a lot in In the calculator corresponded with scholars argue. Of various sorts Michael. Roy. David Jackson others. Of course the way these things work you you've you dig into you want your insulin gay look initially you dig into the cog you and then you get into the cockpit realize Oh God. All this comes from India and you've got to go back and look again at Sada. High and the other message you gotta look at the time. TRAS. In a Pickle
"Recently I was flying with the owner of a mall. M Six, that just came out of annual after the engine had been pickled for two years. We were doing test flight for about one hour. After the flight, the oil filter was going to be removed and inspected for metal. The reason for the filter inspection was the owner sold the airplane, and the buyer asked for this test, flight and filter inspection because of the two years of storage. We departed sandpoint airport, and as usual I suggested we climb in the vicinity of the airport to five thousand feet before leaving the airport area. Just for a little extra margin, the airplane climbed rapidly to five thousand feet, MSL and then we turn to the west and flew to deer Park airport in eastern. Washington. While on route, the pilot continued climbing to about eight thousand five hundred feet MSL. About ten nautical miles from deer park, he started his descent during the descent. I noticed a burning odor. I asked the owner if he smelled the odor, he said No. He mentioned. Oil was accidentally spilled on the engine while filling the crank case during the annual. I suggested it smelled like oil on a hot engine. I dismissed the odor which seemed to diminish. We got lower and slower. The owner did to stop and goes, and then we headed east back to point. On the return flight we maintain three thousand five hundred feet, MSL or roximately one thousand five hundred feet l.. About the time we were over, Newport. Washington I noticed a much stronger odor of oil burning. I again mentioned it to the owner who could now smell the odor. The owner looked at the oil temperature gauge, which read fairly low temperature. I then noticed the oil pressure gauge was reading zero. I suggested the owners started to climb without changing power setting the owner thought maybe the oil pressure gauge failed because the oil temp was not high, which I agreed was not typical with low or no oil pressure. I told him to head directly to Priest River airport, which was now three to four miles away. As, we neared the airport. I suggested we level at four thousand five hundred feet MSL. It was then we noticed two streams of oil, working their way back from the front of the top cowling. This was clearly an emergency. We reduced power as we approached the airport and made an uneventful landing after parking and exiting the airplane, a large pool of oil was quickly accumulating on the ground, and oil was dripping from all openings in the cowling. The mechanic showed up a couple of hours later and determined. The prop seal failed because of a plug that was left on an oil breather line when it was pickled. It was missed during the annual inspection. After the repair, they refill the oil. They determined there was only one to one and a half. Courts left in the SUMP. After three to five minutes aloft, the engine probably would have seized from catastrophic failure of the crank case bearings or some other part. In retrospect when I first smelled the oil odor I should have suggested we inspect the airplane after we landed a deer park. That would have been pretty easy task. We probably would have seen oil in places where there shouldn't be oil, but I chose to dismiss the issue as some oil spilled on the engine. Next time I won't be so casual about an odor. My casual attitude about an intermittent odour could have had disastrous results. God was looking out for us. What if this event happened far from an airport in a location with inhospitable terrain? Hopefully, this won't happen to you, but if anything similar happens, start climbing with or without power, give yourself every opportunity to gain altitude. If possible, this gives you a little edge and more importantly time. Don't pass up landing opportunities to make it to an airport. We had to private airstrips to land at between Newport and Priests River. That's why we continued. Good luck fly often practice emergencies.
