A series of chemical disasters contributed to that increase including the massive fire at ITC's petrochemical facility in deer park. I'm Katie Watkins in

"Hi, everyone. I'm tansy No Vega And this is the take away a new batch of wildfire sparked in northern California over the weekend, forcing evacuations and blanketing the region and smoke. The climate is not what it used to be. You know, I can't speak for the rest of the nation. But I've lived here almost all my life, and I do not remember this amount of dryness in this amount of fuel. It's emotionally exhausting. Just looking at everything else. So then we walked up the street. None of the neighbors were left. The lady across the road here gone, all these people's things, we're gone. I mean, it was just like Pure devastation. California residents They're telling us about their experiences. Joining me now is Sarah Sturgeon, freelance journalists covering the North Bay fires. Welcome to the takeaway. Hello, Zia. So what can you tell us of the status of the glass fire As of this morning, the glass fire, which started on Sunday morning around 4 A.m. in a community in northern Napa County, called Deer Park. As of this morning is 46,600 acres. And and again that that number will likely change in a few hours here when they get the morning reports in and it's a 2% containment, which is a small number of containment, but, hey, it's It's good news, and I know that's on the Sonoma County side. On. We have about over 22,000 structures threatened right now, which has doubled over the past 48 hours. And while they have reported about 82 structures destroyed 80, which are residential, that number will likely grow. The cause of the fire does remain unknown. They're investigating now. Sarah, why are we not hearing? I mean, we hear in the media on our show or doing a segment about this now, but I feel like we're not hearing as much about these fires more broadly, and obviously there's a lot to cover. But this is a big story. Yeah, I agree. It's it's It's kind of interesting after the lightning strikes and the many, many fires that started in August, um and what tragically happened to our neighbors in the North and Oregon and Washington state. I have noticed that the coverage has dropped off in major media organizations on I understand There's a lot going on with the future of our nation regarding politics, but climate change is obviously a critical Situation, and I noticed it was added to the debate last night was touched on a little bit and my aunt, my ears perked up. But the fact that people are still losing their homes. The economy here is already Being battered by not only covert 19 but now especially our hospitality industry. But now more wildfires, especially in a region that has been repeatedly Tackled by wildfires let alone in the past month. This fire is burning less than one mile from a fire scar that literally started in August. What can you tell us about the smoke conditions there? The conditions right now are extremely dry way as mentioned earlier extremely dry. There are a lot of fuels a trees, grasses in those areas that have not burned in A very long time, sometimes centuries century and there's a lot of concern about that. In the next 24 hours. We could have a We have fire Weather watch right now it could increase to a red flag warning of conditions worsen. And we are a little concerned that there could be areas burning that haven't burned a very long time in this residential areas in those areas. We're going to continue talking aboutthe wildfires in Northern California in just a moment. This is the take.

"And if the Trump Administration ultimately allows tick talk to continue operating in the US? How will the app change who we listen to? Pop music critic Michael Would of the Times joins me now to answer those very questions. Welcome. Hi. Thanks for having me first. Explain how Tic Tac has become a go to place for record labels to scout new talent. I mean, in that montage we heard there. Some big hits. Yeah, I think it's all about coded sort of normal places that labels and and our folks are used to finding new talent were out of their hands. So they looked to Tic Tac, which had the added bonus that it had tens of new Leon's of users just sort of locked in their houses, staring at their phones, making huge hits of these songs. The label's jumpin and there's like, Whoa, look at this song that is resonating in such a huge way. We need to start grabbing these songs and sort of giving them the boost that major labels kind of traditionally give songs. We heard old Town road there, which, of course, predates the corona virus pandemic, But I mean, it was one of the first big songs on DH stars. Little Mass X to come out of Tic tac. Yeah. Old Town Road show that this was an app that could make hits out of songs. You know the way the tic tac works is it shows you video is just sort of in an endless scroll. And once the song starts happening in a big way than people are making videos with song, and then more people make videos with song and then more people make videos with song. So ticktock people even in the company told me that you could hear the same song in five different videos in five minutes, which is a kind of exposure that you would never get on top 40 radio. Okay, so this Works in terms of getting exposure. But what are some of the problems that could come up with this new model of going to tick talk for new artists to sign? I think the big one is that you are potentially creating a generation of one hit wonders. You've got folks who made a really cool song that resonated with people. And then you sign them up on your sort of putting them into the chute of like major label pop stardom, But they haven't developed the kind of grassroots following that will actually see them through when their next song isn't maybe a viral smash. Of course, there's this political controversy surrounding Tic Tac. What if Tic Tac's deal doesn't go through? And there's a ban on the Yeah, I think you've got a lot of big tic tac creators who are preparing themselves for that. The Emilio sisters who are some of the most followed people on Tic Tac. They dance and some of the songs they've danced to have become big hits. They recently also joined up with the the APP trailer, which is a kind of a tic tac competitors. So I think you've got people readying themselves for the the idea that Tic Tac could go away. That said pretty much everybody I talked to in the record business, said this kind of format, this sort of short form video set to music. This is not going anywhere for a millennial and Jen Zy audience. This is just like way too entrenched of like a way of Interacting with content that if it's not tic tac, if it's not trailer, it's going to be some app like this is here to stay. Last question. You're a pop music critic. Is there something that one could say about the kind of music that comes out of Tic tac? I mean, is it very uniform? Or does it have the variety that makes it an interesting platform? Tio sort of bring new music out to the public. I think it's a good thing for pop in that it allows just weird songs to get into the system that maybe would not have gotten a serious look. ATT at top 40 sort of more regimented environs of top 40 radio. I think, though, that there is something of like a sort of a closed loop or, like repeating effect where Inevitably, a song happens and the other people tryto emulate that song. So for a while, there were tons of tic tac songs that have a sort of a transitional moment because people were using that to build video around and then you just saw tons of those kinds of videos with those kinds of songs, and now you've even got people making sort of mash up songs using the bones of previous TIC tac songs. So it's interesting. I mean, it's it's still pretty early days. I think that the true test will be months or years from now to see how much variety will it really sort of allow. Michael would is the pop music critic at the latimes. How long do you spend on Tic Tod doing? Your investigations have too tightly controlled that time. Otherwise, your brain just turns to mush. So it's like an hour a day tops. Then you gotta you gotta tap out. Michael would thank you very much. Thanks for having me. He says his wife had other ideas. I always thought that I was an enlightened example of the male species, I'd cook shop. Vacuum, change my Children's diapers and take care of them when they were babies. I believed in general quality. When I adventure out with my baby daughter, her head poking out of a rap. Had my dog to the scenario and the odds multiply that I get lavish with positive attention. Little did occur to me that I was held to a low standard to merit such praise. That is until my wife indignantly pointed out that there was an unfair double standard for women. This is what every mother and woman does every day with little fanfare, an acknowledgement What did I do? That was so special. Why did I deserve praise or executed? There is actually a name for this called the pedal stool effect. I also enacted my unconscious privilege on the whole front where I'd expect recognition and praised by my wife. Acting as if I were going out of my way to do her such a big favour. One night, help the kids with their homework, coca meal or vacuum and then act ejected when I didn't get it. I used to say half jokingly, I'm better than most right. To remind me that she never expects us to credit. Why should I? Then I had an epiphany to those accustomed to a position of privilege and choice. Fairness is experienced as oppression. Now I'm retired, So I do a lot more of the home Taschen errands, but I've learned not to expect any special acknowledgment. Ironically, this shift has made me much more appreciative of my wife and how much she does. I've learned that this is partnership to all my responsibility. I have occasional lapses into expecting to hear that I'm exceptional for being just the guy. Now I mostly do my share without any sense of entitlement or fanfare. It took me a while. But I finally think I get it. With a perspective I'm.
The Mystery of Woodchester Mansion
"People have lived in the area of Gloucestershire share. Now known as would chester park since the Romans invaded Britannia but the site of the Winchester Mansion itself began as a hunting lodge in the middle of a heavily wooded deer park. The ducie family purchased the Land Law in Sixteen thirty one renovating it into a Georgian. House called Spring Park. The ducey's kept the house in a near constant state of renovation added several landscaping features to the sprawling four thousand Acre valley including a group of art official lakes in eighteen forty. The second earl of Ducie inherited the property from his recently deceased father. The Legend of what happened that fateful year would be the first indication that something wasn't quite right at the would chester estate. It's no wonder that rumors of full body apparitions, disembodied voices, and the strange smell of extinguish candles persist. Not when the initial occupancy of the mansion turned out to be so very, very strange. Henry was grateful that his father and past he would never say so loud but he could not be happier. He had long toiled in the shadows of Thomas Reynolds Morton look first earl of Ducie. While the reward of inherited title was a nice reward for his time. It wasn't enough Thomas expected a lot out of him henry heated the permanence near the Thomas War around his son the constant lack of approval had driven Henry to dark thoughts. It was unfair that someone who had so much could feel as though they were nothing. He'd contemplated killing his own father regularly. It wished for his father's death a thousand times. But wishes weren't enough. At night he trump of sneaking into his father's room and crushing his windpipe Thomas, Cole ties would stare back at him in defiance but Henry would only press harder. He would steal every ounce of paint from his father that he could. He would revel in at even. This was the retribution he deserved. But by the time, he finally summoned the courage to act on his feelings fate had intervened. His father was dead and Henry would be able to keep his soul free at sin. He should have been overjoyed, but there was a part of him. That was disappointed. Henry had wanted to watch the life leave is father's is. Instead, S. he stood in the church on that summer morning he saw the corpse of an older man that felt nothing like his father. This husk of a person wasn't even the slightest bit intimidating. He was justice Shell Serene still. No fire behind the size no disapproving sneer. To the best of his knowledge Thomas Reynolds, Morton had never looked serene is life. Death was as the saying goes the great equalizer Henry didn't WanNA. Feel equal to his father he wanted to feel better that him. His shock at being robbed of the chance to end his father's life was eventually swallowed by his own greed. He held the title and the purse strings that once belonged to Thomas. The legacy had been passed onto him and he could do whatever he wanted with that power. His first act of filial disobedience was going to be a party. He would holden enchanted forest themed masquerade at his father's last real estate acquisition but converted Hunting Lodge in Winchester Park. It was still under construction, but the ballroom was mostly finished and the incomplete designed would really add to the atmosphere. Henry woke with a sense of clear purpose on the day of the party even though he held the title for weeks, this would be his entrance into high society as an earl. The people would give him the respect they never gave his father. A. Played softly as Henry mingled with his guests, he welcomed as many people as he could bobbing out of conversations whenever he grew tired of the subject matter. Most of these guests were more his father's friends than his. He despised them, but he couldn't resist the chance to hold his new title and the imminent chaos heads. He outranked nearly all of them now. Though the event was a masquerade few visit guests had been particularly inventive. There was fun and trying to guess who everyone was. Something always gave them away the gate, the bone structure, the laugh. There were at least four uninspiring looking deer and far too many rakish second sons had decided to come as wolves. But there was one person Henry didn't know. A strange masked man was weaving his way through the crowd. He had never introduced himself and his body language was unfamiliar. Henry tried to get closer, but he struggled to even get a clear view of the masked man. The pushed through the of gentry ignoring their complaints. Finally. When the crowd parted they met. The mysterious man was standing still gazing out one of the large glazed windows to the forest behind. And redrew closer and put one gloved hand on the man's shelter. The did not turn around.

"Maybe we'll start with. Way Your interest in Mahamoud. Way Did that how did that come about? When was that? So since by had? I probably I got interested in Mahamoud per se early in Grad school or perhaps a little bit before that might regional interest in Buddhism back in high school days early in college was mostly in San and I always expected that would be the form of Buddhism than I ended up practicing but the as says avid my then girlfriend now wife and I ended up traveling overland India in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, three into nineteen, seventy four, and then ended up at coupon monastery just outside. Katmandu where we studied where Rama Tipton yesterday in London Lumberton. And those famous co concourses which are still ongoing by merrily introductions allom Rim to the stages of the path of course. Llamas, OBA has a particular particularly in those days maybe a little. So I don't know He had a particular teaching style wary if you're at a month course, you could pretty much be sure that half the time was going to be spent in the lower rounds. So he did delight in. Those and Mama yesterday would, of course come in and remind us that we all had put a nature. So it was kind of A. Tough. Cop Nice cop routine and away. And you know he was he was a it was kind of overwhelming for me despite my interest. But as despite my having majored in religion in college and so forth. But. All the complication you know both the details of rim, how Karma works all the different realms, the scholastic arguments back and forth about beginning less mind an emptiness and so forth all of it was incredibly impressive. They were particularly impressive as practitioners as people who lived out what they had studied on what they were teaching but I I also began in in the few the few hours that were that I had hadn't disposal to to read. I think it was probably some poems by Miller wrap up where Branson book by John Blow Fouls, which just had a little bit of discussion. Mahmoud. and. The way the way I took it brightly. At times this reminds me a lot of ZAP it a bid, it short circuits all the detail, all the ritual, all the scholasticism. All those kinds of things that just tells you to realize the nature of your mind. So it appealed to me. Even that? Sort of a a hidden card. Yuba. Lurking inside this is fledgling gay look back. And I kept that in mind when. Year or so you're a half later I ended up graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, studying under shapes up SOPA. who was the first as far as I know the first Betton tenure at American University, certainly the first Tibetan guess. Who was tenured at American University and again to to study with guesses OPA both in the context of the graduate program that Wisconsin and at the deer park would a center as it's now called. Founded. In the mid seventies was too steep yourself in again are a great deal of the the complexity, the ritual, the richness, certainly of of the gaylord actual tradition and once again. The. Reading Mamo drawn decide what kind of balanced helped balance things out for me. So the number of the papers I wrote at Grad School, you know we're on the Mosit- as of India or or soccer punditocracy critiques of Mahamoud, draw various topics like that. So I, you know even in Grad school I I had this interest You know it sometimes said about Chinese practitioners. They're confusions during the day and Taoists. At Night I. Think a part of me that's was during the day and At night. Of course went when I began to discover that was that there was a whole Gaelic tradition of Mambo. I'd been vaguely aware of because it was a little translation that had come out at the library of Tibetan works in archives and. I read through that and So you know after I got Grad school sort of begun by my teaching career. I. Along with rank, of course, bring my dissertation into book form of pretty much everybody wants to do at some point are almost everybody wants to. Buy began to again sort of on the side begin to begin to investigate Gaylord Mabul dress, and so that's at least in terms of the genesis of this I. Guess That's That's how I would I would explain it. In a this dungeon have any. Teachers. Teaching. Mahmoud to you know you know during we went and saw on trump shays league. Once in Chicago he was notoriously late. He was typically drinking soccer when he was typically brilliant. So you know everything we had heard was true. And I think later in the seventies and into the eighties I began to to go occasionally to cognitive teacher but no, I did not have a regular. Teacher and I. I guess it's fair to say that I really never had a sort of regular teacher although in more recent years I've studied some weakening. European. Fortunately for us has his world had ordered in Minneapolis just. Just a few miles from where we live. So now, my my interest I mean I was interested in cognitive because if you're interested in mom will address even from the Gaylord stand going you clearly have to begin researching. Kogyo because. Even, some texts presents the. Is Fine Llamas. Book with. Alex. burs. The gala argue slash kagyu tradition of Mahamoud address. Implies that it's a kind of a sing credit tradition or a synthetic traditional might be a slightly better word So you and it's very clear that the first Panchen Lama who was one of the tutors of style on one of the truly great figures Gael history. He clearly was familiar with cargill literature and and it would seem with some Kogyo practices so. In my in the process of beginning to research, Ma Gala Mambo. Dry Inevitably had to begin reading at least a lot in In the calculator corresponded with scholars argue. Of various sorts Michael. Roy. David Jackson others. Of course the way these things work you you've you dig into you want your insulin gay look initially you dig into the cog you and then you get into the cockpit realize Oh God. All this comes from India and you've got to go back and look again at Sada. High and the other message you gotta look at the time. TRAS. Very, clearly, the textual a kind of sources for Mahmoud to discourse and behind that. Then of course, always these claims that there's a Sutra Mabul dry and so you begin digging around in sutures that may mention the word or may talk about ideas that are similar and so. I ended up going down this kind of rabbit, hole. That led me deeper and deeper back into Indian tradition and it started out as really odd. I'll do a few little translations and right any production suddenly was this Gargantuan projects that threatened to be about just about everything in. Indian. In Tibetan. Buddhism. Because in a weird way Mamo Dra, it was said, could be found everywhere in India, wants about bottles.

In a Pickle
"Recently I was flying with the owner of a mall. M Six, that just came out of annual after the engine had been pickled for two years. We were doing test flight for about one hour. After the flight, the oil filter was going to be removed and inspected for metal. The reason for the filter inspection was the owner sold the airplane, and the buyer asked for this test, flight and filter inspection because of the two years of storage. We departed sandpoint airport, and as usual I suggested we climb in the vicinity of the airport to five thousand feet before leaving the airport area. Just for a little extra margin, the airplane climbed rapidly to five thousand feet, MSL and then we turn to the west and flew to deer Park airport in eastern. Washington. While on route, the pilot continued climbing to about eight thousand five hundred feet MSL. About ten nautical miles from deer park, he started his descent during the descent. I noticed a burning odor. I asked the owner if he smelled the odor, he said No. He mentioned. Oil was accidentally spilled on the engine while filling the crank case during the annual. I suggested it smelled like oil on a hot engine. I dismissed the odor which seemed to diminish. We got lower and slower. The owner did to stop and goes, and then we headed east back to point. On the return flight we maintain three thousand five hundred feet, MSL or roximately one thousand five hundred feet l.. About the time we were over, Newport. Washington I noticed a much stronger odor of oil burning. I again mentioned it to the owner who could now smell the odor. The owner looked at the oil temperature gauge, which read fairly low temperature. I then noticed the oil pressure gauge was reading zero. I suggested the owners started to climb without changing power setting the owner thought maybe the oil pressure gauge failed because the oil temp was not high, which I agreed was not typical with low or no oil pressure. I told him to head directly to Priest River airport, which was now three to four miles away. As, we neared the airport. I suggested we level at four thousand five hundred feet MSL. It was then we noticed two streams of oil, working their way back from the front of the top cowling. This was clearly an emergency. We reduced power as we approached the airport and made an uneventful landing after parking and exiting the airplane, a large pool of oil was quickly accumulating on the ground, and oil was dripping from all openings in the cowling. The mechanic showed up a couple of hours later and determined. The prop seal failed because of a plug that was left on an oil breather line when it was pickled. It was missed during the annual inspection. After the repair, they refill the oil. They determined there was only one to one and a half. Courts left in the SUMP. After three to five minutes aloft, the engine probably would have seized from catastrophic failure of the crank case bearings or some other part. In retrospect when I first smelled the oil odor I should have suggested we inspect the airplane after we landed a deer park. That would have been pretty easy task. We probably would have seen oil in places where there shouldn't be oil, but I chose to dismiss the issue as some oil spilled on the engine. Next time I won't be so casual about an odor. My casual attitude about an intermittent odour could have had disastrous results. God was looking out for us. What if this event happened far from an airport in a location with inhospitable terrain? Hopefully, this won't happen to you, but if anything similar happens, start climbing with or without power, give yourself every opportunity to gain altitude. If possible, this gives you a little edge and more importantly time. Don't pass up landing opportunities to make it to an airport. We had to private airstrips to land at between Newport and Priests River. That's why we continued. Good luck fly often practice emergencies.
