And i never <Speech_Male> thought i'd say that after they <Speech_Male> lost kuni junior. <Speech_Male> But max freed has been on <Speech_Male> the mound looking <Speech_Male> like tom <Speech_Male> glavin in his prime <Speech_Male> lately not <Speech_Male> to mention so lehrer <Speech_Male> has been coming <Speech_Male> alive you got. <Speech_Male> Adam duvall <Speech_Male> which was not a sneaky <Speech_Male> move. I mentioned <Speech_Male> on other shows stephen <Speech_Male> vote. I know <Speech_Male> that is not the sexiest <Speech_Male> of names. Stephen <Speech_Male> vote is just a backup catcher <Speech_Male> but he's veteran backup <Speech_Male> catcher when i say <Speech_Male> he brings a lot <Speech_Male> to a baseball team. <Speech_Male> That team is probably <Speech_Male> having more fun <Speech_Male> right now than they've <Speech_Male> ever had in the history <Speech_Male> of atlanta. <Speech_Male> I really <Speech_Male> liked the braves going <Speech_Male> forward. They're going to run away <Speech_Male> with this division now <Speech_Male> and they <Speech_Male> are a team that i <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> really think are going <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> to the dodgers <SpeakerChange> a serious <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> headache in october <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> <Speech_Female> nineteen <Speech_Female> on for atlanta <Speech_Male> and they took down the indians in <Speech_Male> the world series. But i know what <Speech_Female> you're saying. Let's talk packers for a second here and this offense here. Everyone knows about aaron rodgers. Everyone knows about devante adams and big bob tania marquez valdez gambling and allen lazard and the weapons in the passing game. People know about aaron jones. The stud number one running back jamaal williams especially now gone in detroit in the timeshare with the andrea swift. Well we are seeing in the preseason now. Aj dylan last year. Second round pick people killed this right. Love in the first round dylan in the second round. Love didn't play it. All dylan didn't play until basically the final half the season. Final couple of games but dylan looks like an absolute stud as the backup here to aaron jones. Someone who's going to get a lot of playing time especially down the stretch of the season as an absolute bowl in the running game and kyle and hill young running back adding a different dimension. Here in the preseason catching the ball out of the backfield potentially i look at this packers offense as having so many different weapons right not just with rogers and jones and the receivers but with dylan and with and hill and it just again like solidifies to me. Green bay one minnesota to in the nfc north. And i think right now. Green bay the biggest threats of the tampa. Bay buccaneers cody. They played in the nfc championship. Game last year. Lambeau i think they play in the nfc championship game. This year in tampa. I think you are right in there in that league. I totally think they are the biggest competition to tampa. There's too many ways this team can beat you flat out and do you remember the last time. Aaron rodgers has had that good of a backfield behind him. It's incredible what he's got. This team could beat you in every possible way. This team could feasibly. Beat you without aaron rodgers. Even throwing a pass. That's how good this team currently is. I i don't even see it as vikings too. I see it as packers won pretty much. everyone else. A- distant too. yeah. I think that's a that's a fair point right when the packers could easily win thirteen games this year. Kings max out at eleven. But i still like minnesota's the second best team in that division speaking of the tampa bay buccaneers..

What Happens to All the Stuff We Send Into Space?

"Since the launch of sputnik in nineteen fifty seven humans have been sending all sorts of things into space stuff like the serious eight and new satellite just launched by stitchers parent company or cargo space craft bringing supplies to space station's not to mention the most prising stuff like golden records or read tesla's an estimated thirty five thousand bits of Incentives right up to objects at the size of double decker buses up to of course international space station which is said to be the size of american football fields or five bedroom house. That's dr alice. Gorman associate professor at flinders university in south australia and one of the world's leading space archaeologists she studies all sorts of ways. Humans have engaged with space including these tens of thousands of objects rocketing around in earth orbit. And that's just stuff four inches and bigger there's believed to be millions of objects anything smaller than that. They distributed from lois little bit which is about two hundred kilometers above the surface of the us up to maybe about one thousand two thousand kilometers then. You have raged. That's just cold middle or medium business and then you get into. The high as obits. Miss includes Stationary orbit which is where bust of telecommunications satellites used to think of these orbits kind of like three lanes of a running track with satellites and spacecraft as the runners zipping around and around in their respective lanes. But note that for this analogy to work the track would be really really big and runners relatively teeny if we go out there and look at these might only say one object within your field. You so that impression. We have a stuff's closely packed together. Just together that's actually luck. Absolute worst case scenario. Which we're not at yet. There's growing concern about what will happen over. The next few decades as there are a lot of plans to launch way more stuff into orbit. And here's the thing. The vast vast majority of objects orbiting the planet is considered space junk.

Marilyn Monroe Is Still a Counterfeiter's Best Friend

"Nearly six decades after her death, Marilyn Monroe is still a popular choice from mugs, T shirts, jewelry and other products using her name even illegally. Joining me is Bloomberg News Patent reporter Susan Decker. Marilyn Monroe is still popular. Just how popular issue she's so popular that counterfeiters loved put her name on T shirts and the owner of her trademarks loves to file suit to stop them. So who owns the right to her picture who owns the right to her name? Well, Authentic Brands Group, which is possibly going for an IPO late this year, owns her name and the phrase diamonds are a girl's best friend. Which, of course, is the famous song from Gentlemen prefer blondes. But her image is actually public record. There was a rather famous case back in 2012, where it was decided that she Did not have any right of publicity. Um, this is one of those Make sure you pay your taxes situations when she passed in 1962. They argued that she lived in New York because they didn't want to pay California inheritance taxes. It was a rather modest Mild, but still they didn't want to pay taxes. So they said she was she was a resident of New York. And they said, Oh, no, she was. She was domiciled in California when she passed and and the court said No. You can't say she lived in New York for purposes of taxes and then say she lived in New York, California for right of publicity. We stick with the first one, which was New York, so there is no right of publicity for Marilyn Monroe. The trademarks of her name are still

No More Noise: Turning Down the Volume on Cities

"During the pandemic open outdoor spaces like parks became even more essential on top of being the usual place for quiet. Walk to commune with nature. People were spending a lot more time outdoors and those who live near green spaces especially in urban areas appreciated them even more like the park surrounding the jamaica plain section of boston. We have probably more greenspace than any other neighborhood in boston. This is dr martha karsh share. She's a retired family medicine specialist. Who's lived in this jamaica. Plain neighborhood for more than three decades. We've got to make a pond. We've got the arboretum. We boarder franklin hark on. We have a wonderful forest hill cemetery which is beautiful It's a nice place to live. If you don't have a lot of disposable income you live in a three decker or one of those little tiny row houses the greenspace makes for an idyllic urban rest spent right car share says. Franklin park has become anything but sitting at boston. Leaders are looking for peace in franklin park new tonight. Take a look at this video near franklin park. It is a wild scenes like this that have people living in that area raising concerns about safety. There's been groups of up to a hundred dirt bikes motorbikes. Atv's motorized trikes. They care around inside the park and the noise is terrible.

Bringing the Sensation of Touch to a Robotic Limb

"Hey everybody emily kuang here with npr. Brain correspondent john hamilton. John what do you got for us today. I want to talk about a big change. That's happening in the field of artificial limbs so this includes prosthetic arms and legs. Those are for people who've lost limb it also includes robotic arms and legs these are. What a person who is paralyzed can use in place of a limb that they no longer can control for the past decker. So i've been doing stories about systems that allow a person to control these devices just by using their thoughts. Yeah i've heard about this. That's pretty amazing technology. It is an an obviously to to make it work. You have to decode information. That's coming from a person's brain and send it out to some mechanical device. But what's new. What's happening now is that scientists are turning this out. They are finding ways to have mechanical arms and legs send information back to the users brain sending it in the other direction and what. What sort of information are we talking about. What's getting the most attention is touch or in scientific terms tactile feedback. It turns out that touch is really important for people who are trying to control a state of the art robotic arm or a prosthetic limb and over the past twenty years some artificial limbs have gone from just say grasping object to rotating it and manipulating with individual fingers. It can be really hard for a person to control a device like that just by watching. What their arm enhance doing. It's like trying to tie a shoelace when your fingers are numb when you can feel what your fingers are doing. I talked about this with a scientist named jeremy brown. He's in the department of mechanical engineering at johns hopkins university and he started reeling off this long list of things that are sense of touch tells us about an object. I feel the pressure. I feel the slip. I feel where the object is wet or dry. I can feel the texture of it. I know whether it's rough weather is smooth. There's just as wealth of information that comes through touch and i think as engineers and scientists. We're just understanding how it works and in how you replicate

"Still being everyone in texas in every other state just hates england for sports wise for all of what they brought to the table for the last ten fifteen years. What what i found interesting is the amount of hate brady guide because of his Quote unquote supportive president trump. You know and that was I i've tried to a celebrity is very Pro depends on their political leanings. I try to separate it between them. Maybe because i don't want someone to be against bruce because he so left leaning you know but i try not to be i. Try to be fared others i know. Sometimes they're just jerks on twitter social media. And then i go well. It's it's because you're jerk. It's not because you tend to be more conservative but i. There was a lot of hate about brady more about that than going and all i was from my perspective. I think it's fascinating that someone of his age goes to a d- team and yes the it was a good team but he's able to figure out a way you know with this new coach new system and win the super bowl Is to seek good for the old man. You seem springsteen s skinny like okay. Well this is it. Del supposedly said to him like you know at the super bowl celebration tampa. Have you proven enough yet. You know that's something like and he's thinking like a and and maybe people to improve just show just enough right jingles for commercials or whatever and the only time i've gotten really angry is And more frustrated. I guess but someone on facebook tweeted or posted after letter to you. Came out that You know. I wish bruce would quit putting out new albums because he's tarnishing his reputation and i went. Why are they still the america's team and i asked her i said You know what's what's the best part of waking up. She says folger's in your cup. I said you know how many years it's been says that commercial was live you know was on. I said but it's part of the psyche. So that's why it's america's it's just you know Leaders were part of like the persona of the team. The winning landry the glory and So my son is huge sports fan. He is quick to tell you he was born in one thousand. Nine hundred eighty nine but during landry was still coached in. Jerry didn't buy the team to a couple of weeks after he was born. So he says. I'm a landry baby And you know he So he he barely had sports consciousness. He barely consciousness during those aikman super bowls and so he has just spent his. You know the past twenty five twenty six years of just watching them he like. I just wanna get to an nfc championship game. Dad like i guess. I just wanna get us where relevant you know. So what are your roles. That don't understand losing here. In new england brian. I mean i grew up. You know when when they were three and seven there were They were not relevant. At all. And i didn't really like football really more of a hockey person but the last twenty years we haven't been so spoilt like honestly like the start of the season. The discussion would be who we might be playing in the super bowl. I guess you know like like if any probably everyone in texas now he's gonna find me. Kill me you know but but that was our been our mantra this last year. I think we now realize what it's like to be cleveland and detroit and all of these other towns wonder when they're gonna get together. I remember in eighty seven or eighty eight. Someone called in to norm hits kaz. Who is the he still sports. Talk and They said well norm. So who do we think. We're gonna play in the playoffs and norm goes. I don't know if the cowboys are going to make the playoffs. The ended this was toward the end of the landry. Riera right and they're you know after twenty three years of making the playoffs. That wasn't you. Don't even debate right. Yeah you're gonna play. Afc each joe. Yeah exactly so. That's interesting You know i. I real happy sports. Memories bob your flying through the air so i jumped hockey and i spent forty miserable years waiting cuff from back then so i understand how other sports towns field by focusing on that sport. "That was fine and and you know our businesses being out there visiting home owners so that was shut down for a while so that was hard. Now we're really an essential business. We're providing electric city and So we've been back out there and so all in all it's been pretty good you know it's kind of allowed me to kind of regroup and focus on getting this new place together and all that good stuff awesome. We mentioned a little bit before we hit record You said you've gone through a rough one I guess you're very like the experience of us having rolling blackouts and not having power must hit home to you. Young doubt absolutely. I mean our company alone had a three hundred fifty percent increase in calls from texas about solar and backup battery. Power with solar. You know i think it was starting to realize that you know some of the infrastructure that we've had for one hundred years not going to be reliable going forward so it's yes it's been a big bill into the business but it's not It's not capitalizing on a tragedy. It's you know the the goal should be that this you know. If eighty percent of people in texas had soler and backup battery power. Did that situation would have been a lot better for everyone. safety for their health and warm over that. And and that's true everywhere you go no matter what part of the country you're always open to disruption and this is one of those things where you know You know you're locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen wind buying another horse right And and i know that's a cliche but the reality is It was very. It was very weird and i. I understood a little bit when you know. We only get these kind of winter. Storms every ten years. And so it is you know i understand them putting their money into infrastructure to with the texas heat. 'cause summers are very hot here but It was weird. I am nowhere near hospital. I am nowhere near 'fine station. And i never lost power My son super complex is literally across the street from a fire station and he lost power but they were trying to say oh. You know the reason why. We're we're trying to make and i just don't think they knew what the hell they were going. Just just know craziness. Wealth unregulated grid in the country. So while yeah and you know there there's a lot i love. I grew up in louisiana. My dad was in the army. We moved around a lot. But i've lived in texas since eighty six and there's a lot to be said that i love about the state but there is this This sometime this arrogance That i think is unwise like there's an east coast grade a west coast. School Shootings Drove Stephen King To Take 'Rage' Off The Shelves

"In this episode. We'll cover the bachmann book rage chapters one through twenty. Let's start the show high school senior. Charlie decker facing expulsion for salting. His chemistry teacher sets the contents of his locker on fire gets a pistol and returns to his algebra class or he kills the teacher and then a history teacher who comes to investigate holding the rest of the class degeorge decker reveals information about his troubled childhood and some of the other students begin to share their own secrets and feelings. That's quite the setup. sean. Yes so jay. This story rage was originally written at least started being written by king in one thousand nine hundred sixty six when he was a senior in high school and then he finished it in one thousand nine hundred seventy one and at that point it was titled getting it on Decker says that phrase multiple times throughout the section of the book king wanted to publish it like under his name right away but his publisher doubleday did want over saturate the market so this was the first case where they said all right. Well let's do it under a pseudonym and he submitted it as getting it on by guy pillsbury which is kings grandfather's name so that was going to be the original pseudonym he was going to use and there's a twitter user who just started following a couple of weeks ago named guy pillsbury so i thought that was a nice deep cut that is really deep. Cut yeah when he submitted his guy pillsbury. A number of people at the publishing house knew about king having a book called getting it odd and so the secret was already out. They pulled it and said okay and then he resubmitted as as richard bachman and submitted his with the new title rage and richard. Bachman i was because he had a richard stark book sitting on his desk and bachman turner overdrive was playing on the radio and so he was looking around. And there. you go richard bachman. Sorta like the Deficient the light bulb coming together to form the homer simpson logo number one. Lucky joe exactly so. This is actually his fourth published book. It came after kerry salem slot in the shining and just before the stand this was nineteen seventy seven it was published and then it was obviously republished in the bachman books in one thousand nine hundred eighty five. And if you're like my father you'll notice that this is not a book that is easy to come by nowadays. He was unable to find it when he was looking forward on. Different places and that is because after number of school shootings that had some tenuous ties to rage. There's at least one where the kid had a copy of the book his locker but some of the other ones may have referenced it or not king let the book go out of print in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight so all the other bachman books are now published as standalone novels. But this one is not in the forward to the bachmann book. Blaze king writes about rage. This is now out of print and a good thing. And if you go to the stephen king dot com website look up rage. No future printings will be made of this novel. At stevens request due to the sensitive nature of the content

Story of the year? Zoom

"Here talking tech. We all know what the biggest tech story of the year was us. City in front of that zoom video. Meeting nobody knows it. Better than larry decker. Who wrote the book on zoom meetings. Great on camera. Larry is with us today. So larry A lot of meetings this year Yeah it's been incredible and my book was just. It was kind of serendipitous. I wrote the book about being on camera. Nuts not necessarily on zoom but just being on camera as a presenter. You know we have to do that. these days. Being on camera to communicate about our business answer questions explainer videos. So i wrote this book called great on camera and then the world changed and everybody started doing zoom meetings and i did a little tips video about that. That got picked up all over the place and thank you. An article showed up in usa today and it was a it was a fantastic explosion for my book. So that's that's all been kind of good. I didn't wish the virus on anybody but it hasn't hurt my book sales. Oh well that's that's fantastic to hear You know let's first talk about the good part of of using zoom. I think so. Many of us have gotten used to the fact that we don't have to get dressed to leave to go somewhere. We don't have to drive. We don't have to worry about parking. We can just do it on the computer. It's certainly saved everybody's life for working at home. It's saved i'll i'll be. What would the students have done. Who were taking their classes online. Ten years ago they couldn't have done it right. Well i yeah. I think that just now society is at a place where people are getting comfortable with it. The interesting thing is that The kids are kind of latching onto quicker than anybody and then Older generations are a little bit slower to to grasp. What's going on and do things a little bit less sophisticated when they're on their zoom meetings I ended up. I'm a rotarian. And so i ended up getting invited to do rotary meetings via zoom. All the time. And it's always. Hey would you explain to us how to be better on. Actually what most people say is they want to look. Better on. Camera looked better on zoom. But it's not about the look and and that's a big chunk of what i get to explain. Well let's follow that up. It's not about the look. It's not about the camera. it's not about the positioning of what what is it. What is what is it about well. It does have a little bit to position but as much as anything at the there are subconscious things that we all learn as human beings from the time. We're little kids. Were looking up at those grownups who are looking down at us so we know mentally what that feels like a little kid. What it feels like to be looked down at because we have no authority. Were a little kid. Were being told everything to do. And then people come up with With zoom camera position. So that they are looking down at their audience. So it's not going away is a regular part of our life What are some of the things that you think will stick with the video meetings. You know some. I mean kids are going to go back to school at some point. They're going to back to school. A chunk of us are going to go back to the office. But what's gonna stick you know. I think that there have been so many times in business. Where all i've gotta go out to I gotta get out to chicago to meet with my client face to face because we need to do xyz presentation. Well sometimes zoom meetings will suffice will take the place of some of those in person face to face meetings it might be with existing clients that might be on a sales meeting that you're trying to land a new client and some of those things that we would never have said. Hey would you hold your phone up. let's just do a facetime meeting That that would have been ridiculous a year ago. But now everybody's used zoom and you know somebody says hey. Can i meet with you about this. Well zoo okay. I've got a little bit of time on friday. I think that's going to be much more acceptable than looking like i'm just trying to shirk. I'm just trying to get out of something. I i don't have really enough time for you. That kind of thing. So i think it's going to be more acceptable to have zoom meetings and even to request him. Okay

So I have tons of stuff on Facebook Marketplace that's for sale. And could I have somebody coming to look at a china cabinet some time in during the day and I'm reading my materials and I hear the Holy Spirit say how about you go move the car out of her arms because they're going to be coming any minute now and I'm like, okay, so I bought a car at the garage and get everything ready for these people to come see a decagon. If as soon as I didn't finish all that they pulled in the driveway and I was ready because the Holy Spirit told me to put my book down and go like really cares about the smallest little hair in her head. So that was the Catalyst moment and I've been a Church Girl my whole life. I was in church in the womb my husband and I worked Financial certified certified through Crown Financial. So we knew the stewardship principles and we did have a small nest egg that we could tap into during this time, but still suck. It wasn't enough as much we cut in and we cut cut and had to change our lifestyle drastically. We still didn't have enough and so I got to experience with real hands-on experience of what it looks like to have God Be My Provider because we didn't have enough. I got to see him multiply things. It just didn't make sense. I got to see him show up with checks in the mail that matched the electric bill. I got to see him really show up in a way and so I got to experience a personality of God when he says I am your provider. I knew that in my head, but it wasn't until this experience that I knew that in my heart. Because I could actually see it and I could taste and see that he was good in a real experience in my life. So that was the catalytic moment that knocked me on my bottom and I'm sitting there and I'm like, oh Lord, I need you because for the entire part of my previous life of we'll call it that I was doing it myself off and it was here's my plans Lord. Please bless it and there have been a few times when I've had to surrender things. I went to law school wanted to practice law and that was not the direction got it had so you very loudly closed that dog. They were times that I had to take plan C but still it was a matter of okay God I'm leaning in I'm listening to your direction, but it was not nearly as intentional as it was when there was no other option, isn't it sad how you've got to get know other option? Why do we do that to ourselves? I don't know I watch yeah, so you came to this place where you dead? Had to totally rely on God's promises where they were kind of these promises that were yes, and amen. Yeah, I believe that I grew up with that it became incredible real for you in that transition. What were some of the things that you struggled with and then had to let go of during this time. I had to let go of control there was nothing that I could do and I think as type A doers who God is just built in me the less get it done down there were things that I just like there was nothing he wanted me to sit and wait and I had to let go of what I thought wanted to be when I grow up because I had all kinds of dreams for myself and some of them I do believe, you know, God put in my heart to send me on a Direction so he could use certain skills, but it was not the ultimate plan right? It was not dead. The plan that says hey, you know say yes to me and let me do everything and so there was a time during this lay-off when I was sitting on the couch and I was working with a Headhunter found this amazing job came along. It was the job Brian it was the job that would have meant the title the money the everything except it had an hour-and-a-half commute one-way..

Now, let's meet our guest bath and hear their story as a people-pleasing workaholic who suffered from Mommy guilt and walks your life with false confidence Sherilyn found. She was burned out spiritually empty emotionally drained and Sleepless transformation came through a process where God Pride open each and every finger in the tight fist she held for in it was what she falsely believed to find her happiness and identity theft. Wow, Sherilyn tell us about your previous life and what events led to this incredible transformation. And by the way, it's great to have you on the program. Well, thank you Brian. I'm so glad to be here in honor to be a part of what you're doing and how you're helping other people's stories bring others hope so, thank you. You're welcome. The Catalyst a moment was probably eight years ago. And I had left one job that I was very successful at in my own pride of thinking I was deserved better than the station. I was in and I left off work for a start-up and I was there for about nine months and it was just a horrible fit for a lot of reasons and it was that job that at the end of February is the last Friday in February super cold and I was a consultant it was working from home and I'll never forget the phone call when they called. They say I'm sorry Cheryl in your position has been eliminated and then that one phone call my family lost 60% of our income. Wow. My husband had a successful job. I just made more money than he did. And so we lived outside of Washington DC. We had a two family income. It was partly required to live there and then partly we had grown accustomed to our lifestyle and so we'd kind of you know budgeted some luxuries and some things that we had just turned off. On the way is through hard work and when that moment when we just lost 60% of our income, I tell you what this fear completely froze me for those of you who are wrestling with that 60% number. Yeah the questions that you're wondering. How are you going to do this? How will we even pay the bills? Is it going to be? Okay God. Are you there? Like hello..
