Here She is me and hear me well in Fort Worth, we're going to demonstrate that a world class city is capable of being a premier destination. People from every background from every race, gender, age and experience. We are one of the best places in the country to live work, play and raise a family. Yeah, that's Maddie Parker, the I know this was a mayoral races aren't partisan. You don't declare your Republican or a Democrat. But let's be real Matty Parker. She worked for Betsy Prize She was the chief of staff. She's more Republican, Deborah Peoples was the more Democratic candidate. And Maddie Parker wins, and she did it pretty handily about by 7% or so 53.6% of the vote, the unofficial tally from over the weekend 46.4% for Debra people, So this was fascinating to me. I was I was interested in this election not just for the direction of the city, but just for the long term outlook on politics in North Texas, because Eric County has been one of those kind of swing counties recent go back to Ted Cruz Bay to Iraq in 2018 more people in Tarrant County voted for bait. Oh than Ted Cruz. So a lot of conversations like Man is Tarrant County going blue at the very least purple, uh, but at least on a local level, where the turnouts are a little lower. The answer to that question is no. I still Republicans, at least for the mayoral race. Now, a few City council spit seats. Turned more liberal again, not partisan races. But just look at track records of some of the people running and you can kind of tell where the directions going, but at least from a mayoral perspective, Maddie Parker her connection to Mayor Betsy Price, who has another week left in office. Was enough to get her the job by the way, 37 years old, only a few years older than me. She's the youngest mayor of a major American city. So, uh, Maddie Parker going to be on the show to and about hour and 10 minutes. 8 30. You can hear from her live right here on K. Former City Council member caught 45% of the vote. Let's move to Dallas where four new people are going to be joining the City Council, and that's a big deal to me. Only for this reason. You know, you don't really pay a lot of attention to names of people on City Council, just City Council. What does it matter? It means everything, especially in a city like Dallas. Major American city that tends to lean left where in America how many conversations have happened across the country about de.

"In Fort Worth is technically nonpartisan, but the current mayor is Republican near obviously democrat, what do how how do people think about that? When they're electing mayors. Do people think about partisanship to they look at the background? How are people sort of making their decisions? What are you hearing from them as you talk? To them. So Kelly in this era mount of politics. There is no such thing as non parts to day. We have a mayor in Fort Worth who is an vast and Trump Republican he calls her his fantastic friend. She goes to Washington, and you know, she's been seeing chummy with the family. She gives her money out of Republican causes the only time she is nonpartisan is when she's running. But soon as she wins, she in acts, a very Republican agenda. And so people need to understand that. And I will tell you here. The local Republican party says that emails and tells everybody the voting history of all the candidates they have run she she won the race by reaching out to Republicans and and telling them she was a Republican and then the air. Everybody else by saying, oh, I'm nonpartisan. So I, you know, I think people sense twenty sixteen or waking up to the fact that we have these very partisan people running progressive cities, and they're tired of it. You know, I seem you're talking to lots of people are going around and running for mayor. What are the people saying what what sorts of issues, you know, you said people care about sort of what what's happening locally what what are those issues? What are the things that are really worrying people in Fort Worth right now. What are what are the changes? They'd like to see. Okay. So I I understand you're in Chicago and so forth. Fort Worth is. Now, the fifteenth largest city in the nation, we have grown exponentially. And we are starting to be faced with issues and problems that big cities have. And so one of them is transportation, we do not. Have a good public transport of that impacts the city that I live in and the city that I love is that many of the jobs that this mayor, and we'll talk about this claims that she's been bringing to Fort Worth are on the outskirts of Fort Worth where they have you know, business development. So when you don't have a good transportation system, the citizens inside Fort Worth who'd rain out have a car who depend on public transportation cannot get to those jobs because they're not on the bus line. You know and Cifti largest city in the nation, the primary mode of public transportation is a city bus system. And that does not go everywhere that does not run on a on a regular schedule. I mean, some of the buses are an hour in between stops. And so it does not and bowed wail for residents who are dependent on. Transportation, and this mayor in eight years has done nothing to really help move us along that line. We also wear. We also have this really incredible story about taxes, and what has happened and homeowners. We have this mayor in eight years has given unfettered tax abatements to businesses to get them to move here. Some of them get deals like seven years of not having to pay taxes. So Kelly weather and people won't this is unfavorable to most people. But in Fort Worth are taxing system is now turned upside down where residential homeowners pay. Sixty one percent of the taxes that run these institutions and businesses only pay thirty nine percent. And so the burden for city services for paying for these things has fallen. Into the homeowners, and the mayor actually sat television interview and said, well, we may see a decline in city services, and you know, we may see less code. We may see less street repairs. You have a city where residents feel like they're they're they're not enough of those things. I mean, we don't have good infrastructure and many parts of the city. We don't have an infrastructure is not only roads, but libraries parks, those type of things that make life livable. We don't have a good jobs in many parts of the city. They are scattered around the outskirts of Fort Worth and people can't get to them small businesses or drowning hair because we don't have the resources to help small businesses are homeless population has increased by five percent year over year over year..

"This is Kelly with two broads talking politics, and I'm on today with Deborah peoples who is running for mayor of Fort Worth Texas. Hi, Deborah, hot Kelly. How are you? Well, and listen today, you really asked what? Yes. Yes. I love it. You're my my colbrad today. Yes. And listen, I love the fact that we have the mid west and what I call the south on together. Because there's some there's some really distinct things that bind us together. I was born in Louisiana, but came to Texas as a young child, and so I am deep in red red red country. And so as a result, I have spent my whole adult life, and I tell everybody came out of the womb fighting for social issues and Justice. So I think I've been a political animal all of my life because of where I live, and and the types of things I saw growing up. Suet, tell me a little bit about sort of your background. You know, what made you at this point in twenty nineteen decide the that you're running for mayor. I've been running for my whole life. I grew up in a family that was focused on civil rights and civil rights activism. I had a great uncle who argued with Thurgood Marshall and the sweat versus painter lawsuit. And so I grew up and that was to dissect GRA gate, the university of Texas law school, and so I grew up in a family that preached activism, and when I went to college, and this is how I know you your listeners are gonna know they're talking to an old Braun very first presidential campaign that I worked on was George McGovern campaign. And I tell everybody that I literally sat on the curve. It was a curb outside the campaign office and sobbed when McGovern lost and knew at that moment that I was fully committed to issues of social Justice here in America. So I came were. Work like you did on a job for many years. And when I retired. I came back to Fort Worth the city that I truly love and ran for the position of Tarrant county democratic chair and have spent the last five years focused on electing Democrats and progressive I was a VP at AT and T when I retired the company I worked for and so I knew how to bring people together Bill consensus, you know, create groups energy, and you those skills to create this great environment intent county and last election cycle in a county. They love to call the reds county in Texas delivered this county for then congressman Beto or war who is running for state Senate position, and we also flipped three critical Republican seats, and we flipped them to the democratic side. So. As part of my mission, deterrent Tarrant county. Blue I spent a lot of time talking to people in the city of Fort Worth and realize that the issues that they were concerned about and that they go to sleep at night worrying about or all local issues, and as a result of that and talking and meeting with people I decided we needed a progressive leader here in the city of Fort Worth. And not a Trump Republican that we currently have kids my candidacy, I love it. So mayoral race..
