The length of a seventy point three certificate at white hart the discipline distances of seventy one point two mile swim and open water fifty six mile by and then a half marathon the capital off just because it isn't hard enough so thirteen point one at the end. So that's what ends up to seventy point three okay. So so you're decided to sign up. And so tiffany you guys starting to train together or kind of talk about how you guys decide because i mean one of the things that triathlon of this length requires like like a half marathon a marathon. It requires a lot of training right. You just have to. It's not necessarily hard but it is time. So what have you guys. Do you think your schedules. And you say we'll meet up certain times kind of talk about that a little bit. Well so i mean he should or shouldn't admit this bet. I'm not great at following leg specific training plan. I've what am i say. Weaned it one of my other. Friends said self coach. That's generous yes. We should say laurel was on the half ironman or we call it the seventy point. But no. i'm not spitting bullets at you. You with my eyes. Tiffany have a difference different path to the starting line so so yourself coached and so so you know but on kind of and give me you know. The goal week did a lot of our long rides together. We meet up at the gym especially over the winner before it was nice enough to start writing outside. And do you know. Long sessions of the senate room or swim laps together. We would try to each other accountable to some early mornings plans than highly fifty percent success rate in bail late night before early that morning. Greg fifty even bagging eighteen before the race out canceled. I really appreciated with having a friend who had done one of these events previously just hired that confidence asking all these little questions about okay. "Is there such a thing as typical running runners e pain or is it just an individual person by person. I mean i see there. Is i mean. Usually when someone who's active and especially a runner talks about their knee hurt having knee pain. It's used you're going to be one or two things it's either gonna be there. Ilia tibial band so it's going to be on the lateral or the outside of the knee or it's going to be right in the front on the lower part of the which is anterior knee pain and it also can be called actually runner's knee jumper's knee and then patella for moral paint syndrome okay and so In what are the two. I mean so so. We're kind of talking about two different. Things are two related. things. I guess but difference. I mean what what causes each of those. What causes the. It bands pain. Yeah i feel like most of the injuries. The knee pain ankle pain of shin splints. Almost all that is usually because people just think they can just run around and you hear that. It is a good pair of shoes. Go running but there's so much more to it and unfortunately you know i think especially where medicines like. I wanna get going. I wanna lose weight and they still get going and they're just has to be a prep for that so i think there's a lack of preparation so there is a lack of getting her body ready for the demands of running sherwin And then not being consistent is another thing and trying to do too much at the same time so either increasing your speed and increase in the miles at the same time or maybe people. I'm going to start doing speed word. And he'll work and increase my speed hand. Increased by surrey doing those things and then core mechanics. Unfortunately some people have no idea what they look like. They run if no idea that they're over extending their leg or their stride is actually to slow or to shore or that. They're hinging at their hip as they're running the whole time. Maybe they don't see that their feet are turning and so they keep going and have no idea having these

"Then what are some of the benefits. I mean let's talk a little bit about the ability you can get your heart rate pretty high right which you can't do in the pool If you want you know for thinking of traffic sports but Heart rate high low impact whether what other things to cycling kept going for it. Yeah you know. It's actually funny when those with was saying that it reminded me back in twenty ten. I think i took a year off triathlon. And i just did marathons and the coach that i was working with at the time was a marathoner and he had me doing a ton of biking not too much not too long but frequency over duration and intensity over Some other stuff so a lot of the big ring work and a lot of the short like vio to lake minute thirty minute and a half anything under two minutes. Kind of all out is what. I was doing to kind of supplement the running because marathon runners usually run so much during the week and i just don't respond well to it s. Most people don't respond well to them many miles so just the off the legs but also having some intensity and having some kind of you know. The circular motion of the running and cycling sometimes complement each other really. Well yeah. yeah. I mean people who have paid attention for the run of run like a mother. Another runner no that. I basically trained for the nike women's marathon on my bike and got a fracture Gosh early on in the training. And i was not. I was not given up that marathon. Come hell or high water. I was going to it with my one in three year old. I was like san francisco. Boston going and my coach at the time. Who was it. Carmichael training systems was like okay. We're hitting the bike and holy cow. I worked so freaking hard on that bike but it you know and my longest run i think was like sixteen miles and certainly i wasn't absolutely one hundred percent prepared for that marathon but but it can get you a really nice part of the way especially like you said if you're injury-prone or don't do well with a lot of high

I am really get that really excited for today's episode because we are talking cycling as you likely know spent a lotta time on two wheels. I love how strong cycling makes me feel. I love how much ground i can cover on a bike. I love that. It's a low impact sport and i love watching the smooth payment. Just roll out underneath me as a speed along. What i don't love about cycling is that it can be intimidating. Just the thought of a flat tire used to keep me home. The sport definitely has has a learning curve. And we're going to talk to that in the second part of the show. i. I'd like to welcome the train. Traffic mother club coaches jan harrison. And liz water strat. "A podcast about training and racing in endurance sports. I'm debbie mcdowell founder. Of another mother runner. I don't know about you but growing up. I love those. The in the life books huge picture books where an army of photographers set out to capture. Twenty four hours in america california the soviet union they got babies being born rodeo queens being crowned marriage proposals on one knee they reminded me of how vast different and yet connected. We all are taking a little inspiration from those books today as we chat about one recent race weekend april twenty fourth and twenty fifth. We're going to talk to three. Women who raced in south dakota rhode island and texas all the different all the different distances and all had different experiences but i will say overall. The theme was celebration for all of them. This was their first in person. Race since march of twenty twenty and they all like i said had downright jubilant days and post race reports which we thought would be fun to hear and potentially inspire you. If you're feeling healthy and ready to race. I'll let them introduce themselves so. Please tell us your name where you live in the race that you did and we'll start with michelle out rhode island. We'll work our way across the country. So hydrogel low so. My name is michelle. San antonio and i am from rhode island and the race i did was in westerly rhode island and it was called the clam digger And there are actually two options. There was a five k. And a five mile. And i did the five miler. Okay and do you know how many people were there by any chance off. The top of your total between the races was one hundred and twenty. It's a small local event. Okay yeah it's nice so a small race. All right nasa got ginny in near houston texas. So how'd you had ginny either. I'm jenny i'm in katy texas just west houston in iran. The cow patty classic ten k. There was also a five k. Nice and how many were at your race. I probably about the same yobe hundred. Yeah maybe not even and yours was like a local fundraiser. i was looking it up online. Is that really what yeah. It's a fundraiser for genome. It's a fundraiser. it's a fundraiser. it was for like four h. And so what. What did you do out in. South dakota south dakota in a melissa. Introduce yourself hi. My name is heather. Reid and i live in sioux falls. South dakota and my race was in my hometown of sioux falls. And it was called the skedaddle. Run okay and it was only a half marathon. So that was the only race distance option and attendance wise. I believe was around six hundred and fifty so a little bit bigger than the other. Two south dakota showing up at the podium with attendance at least great all right so cool. So we have a five mile ten k. And a half marathon. i love that. They're all different distances. So michelle tell us about how you running has gone during the pandemic. Which is always a cause for celebration here. Where everything's lockdown except for the pool that you now have to sign a bring assigned waiver every single time. You swim Wow yeah that says you haven't shown any cove symptoms in the last sixteen weeks sixteen. Read any of the print. I just just show me where to sign round me the pool tricia. My running buddy was there and she goes. I can't believe they sixteen weeks. I'm like what are you talking about. Like thing just signed my So yeah so anyway. But i had not just tricia there. But daphne my fifteen year old daughter went with me so that she could swim and we each had our own lane. Wow and because. I'm not sure you knew this dim but daffy was on her school's swim team This year where all the was dry land training all right. Well that's a good start a via via zoom and then and then it was only three days a week and then one day a week. It conflicted with her online therapy. So i'm like you know you can switch the therapy signal mike. Okay so So anyway so she did not have a swimsuit says she used when my own suits in the got. Some goggles from Jack and then our dead jack and then she just pulled her hair back into a ponytail but since then we have gone and bought a speedo swimsuit for her and got her a swim cap. Very nice yeah and so it just you know. It's a swing so funny jim. You know you. And i have gone to many a couple times together and i'll talk to the person really while they're swimming but yet don't you find that when you are the pool with someone you feel you. It feels different than when there's there's you don't know the people in the lanes next you like. There's like almost like this telepathic. Waves go out. Yeah oh for sure. Now it's fun to and those off chant on those on those random times where you do end up you know stopping at the same time at the end of the pool and have a little chat or something. That's nice too but yeah no. There's definitely something to be said for having you know a friend acquaintance in the next lane. Yeah yeah so. I reminded me. I felt like Tradition was was going on. You know because when my dad was alive and he was an avid swimmer. And so when. I would be visiting either home from college or i guess it wasn't a swimmer college. So am i talking. About like when i would come home from when i lived in boston or san francisco or something and we would go swimming and just being their necks and seeing a family member being there and So hopefully i swim better than my father and put your head in the water. Then you're winning yes so anyway. But gosh at one point. You'd like this. I saw daphne holding the the side of the pool with both arms behind her..
