"To see that. At least in what car the democratic process for and in washington the work continues on trying to put together a compromise. I'm jeff smith. Later in the podcast. We'll talk with bridge magazine capital reporters sergio martinez beltran on the evolving redistricting process. The maps that will define michigan's politics for the next decade and we'll talk covert abortion rights shake up at the university of michigan and more republican candidates embracing the big lie. It's the michigan pala. Cast where we're looking to latch onto one of those trillion dollar points. This is the michigan polly cast with christine berry and waltz. Org political news notes from across michigan and the issues our pleasant peninsulas christina's off again this week and we thank you smith for sitting in jeff. Let's begin with president biden's trip into howell for those. Not familiar with hall is a very read part of michigan. It was at one point. The headquarters of the michigan ku klux klan livingston county voted sixty forty in favor of donald trump and twenty twenty. It's also home to the training center for the operating engineers union a union that's at the heart of rebuilding our infrastructure. That says representative. Debbie dingle made howell the perfect choice of those new workers that men and women are worry at all. The president of the acid rain forced into camping and before the president in his core a believer in uniting the country a lot of politicians mouth the words but biden despite the overwhelming divide in the nation is trying to live it. These bills are not about left versus right versus progressive or anything that pits. Americans against one of these bills are about competitiveness versus complacency. They're about opportunity versus decay. They're about leading the world or continue. Let the world pacify which is literally happening. Supportes investments is to create a rising america. America's movie to these investments is be implicit in america's decline days bills as pursue broader vision of our nation on nab is accepted very cramped view of our future. This isn't about two piece of legislation it's about inflection point. I mentioned earlier. We are in our history. The world history ending to the president's appeal to union workers on the same day and executive order from governor whitmer that has the anti union republicans howling. The governor reinstated the prevailing wage for all michigan state of michigan contracts for construction in other words. If you're going to be doing the rebuilding of a bridge or a highway using state funds or you're gonna be putting up a building for the state. Your workers have to received the prevailing wage for that trade rather than a joint to the lowest available price labor and that is something that had the unions fighting with the state for a long time. This is one of the first bills. Jeff that the republicans used the gimmick of a petition drive and bypassing a gubernatorial veto to enacted the law and the ironic part is was the veto that we would have been coming from governor. Mitch snider that they bypassed by getting this petition drive so effectively. The spit a few million dollars to collect signatures a republican legislature give the bidding of the non union contractors and there we had it and what it amounted to was the right of a local units of government and state government to pay workers less for doing the job and the argument is made by the skilled trades that you get lower quality were as a result of using lower quality labor. Which i've always believed that you get what you pay for and if you always go for the lowest bidder that's what you're gonna get in washington. The debate continues over. The president's economic agenda cable loses breathlessly proclaimed the plan close to dead multiple times but as mark twain said of himself. The reports of my death were an exaggeration. In the current debate. Another historic quote comes to mind from autobahn bismarck. Laws are like sausages. It's better not to see them. Being made congressman. Dan kildee concurs. This is the democratic process. I mean even though it's happening only among democrats were agreeing out our differences. We're trying to find a path to common ground. It's going to require compromise. Both points of view of already acknowledged after compromise. So it's important to step back and think this is what the democratic process looks like. It's not people storming the capital with intent to kill. It's not denying the obvious outcome of an election. It's debate over the issues. I think in some ways. We just didn't take a look at that. Say wow this is really good to see that. At least in one carney. The democratic process is worth. Jeff is demand a couple of thoughts for me. First of all out of on bismarck was right. I worked in the legislature for ten years and the process of reaching a consensus on any controversial legislation is kind of ugly but now we're doing it in public whereas before it used to be pretty much done behind closed doors the public couldn't see it. They thought it was really easy to get any. Bill passed and they went would wonder why it would take so long to pass. Thanks the other thing that Kildee really points out is right now. We've got a republican party. The scott no interest in policy. It seems as though republicans in congress are only concerned about one thing and that is power regaining power getting taking over the white house taking over congress again. But there's no policy agenda on the republican side. What republican stand for other than stopping joe biden. I can't think of anything proactive. That republicans have tried to do in congress since the election of twenty twenty Exactly and you've got walter up. People like ted cruz. Are lauren. colbert or marjorie taylor. Green or matt gaetz people of that ilk jim jordan. They basically are there to tweet and post on social media and own the lips. And that's basically what they do. That's not legislating. That's not governing marjorie taylor. Green in fact was exultant when she was tossed off of all our committee assignments. 'cause she said that would give her more time to do the other things that she wants to do. In congress rather than focusing on legislation and like it or not marjorie. The primary job of a member of the legislature is to legislate with. Marjorie is not interested in that she just wants to be pain in the ass for everybody and maker verbal points and like you said they lifted tweet and that's pretty much it but it does in the final bill bag better program. Is i think going to pass. I see the makings of compromise. Beginning to build. Both sides are playing tough the mansion moderate side and the for the problem solvers caucus offering about one point seven to two trillion dollars bernie sanders and the progressive holding out for three point. Five now but they are coming together and they have in the middle of this to people that are really good at forging compromises between different opinions. When you talkin. Joe biden and you're talking speaker of the house. Nancy pelosi chuck. Schumer is pretty good at it as well. I'm thinking that they're actually going to come to an agreement at some point the question that we have right now though is how do they get there because there are still some very very major differences. I think there's a consensus that daily. I wanna change the tax structure and secondly there are some major parts of.

"Good they don't mean it to mean what it's supposed to and that's that's sad to me i'm not saying that's the case for all non natives but usually the ones that are making these policies. Yeah that's the case talk about. I'm sorry we're good throw out. I said the buzzwords conservation sustainability and clean and green and know put some action behind the words. Tell the people what's really going on. Tell the people how you going to get there until the people what's involved. I think what it is always to be at the table and come to an agreement on the debt on a common definition absolutely. That's what's not happening. We have all these silos. This of environmentalists this group of kind of conservationists this group of people in the in the sustainability camp and. They're not talking to each other. They all think they know what's right and you're accomplishing very little. And in some cases you're actually making things worse. Oh absolutely much worse than they would not acknowledge in that same vein. What needs to be discussed around the table. There's an article that. I wanna talk about on food water air. That speaks to almost that same thing about not all all mine at the table. Not i'll voices at the table. I'll give you a tease. That's about this young lady. That's challenging the narrative about small family arms and that goes back in speaks to the concert of the con- conversation about conservation and sustainability so. I'm looking forward to doing that. That particular show because she's got a lot of good point. She implies that a lot of the voices of missing from the table. A lot of voices missing. So why is that. is that by accident. No it's by design so this article that we're talking about let's see if all the voices of wanting to be at the table they have to be. They have to be now. This bill is introduced into the house by representatives. Debbie dingle democrat of michigan and jeff front fourteen.

"Eric i c k. I just Just a moment here. And i said this yesterday. It's just worth repeating. Because they're they've been ambushed two degree by joe manchin. The progressive have Debbie dingle was she's a congresswoman from michigan. She was on television this morning and said even pelosi chuck schumer never told pelosi about the one point five trillion dollar cap. Joe manchin had told chuck schumer. Now i don't think it's in this clip. I don't think i pull. That were listened to her talking a little bit about the infrastructure situation precious differently than you are the facts and is hers working very hard and there is nobody no. I had a season saw around capitol marriage. What master legislator. There's nobody better at legislating cheese. Time get a path they get their democrats are united. That failure is not an option is working very hard with the white house. The president the senate on the caucus who are united ninety six percent of us. I wait. it's very simple. You gotta have both of these bills. The president's vision when he ran was the bill Better plan and she is trying to get a pass. It's all of us together. Can agree on and vote on and we'll see when that happened. Oh she's trying to get a bill and you know to a degree. Pelosi has a difficult job. The progressives really think they're in charge and they have forgotten that there is a system they have worked there. You know jonah goldberg rotate. Brilliant book years ago. You should read called fascism and it documents owl actually. Fascism isn't a conservative ideology is actually a very progressive ideology. it was the nineteen twenties. American progressives embraced. Fascism and mussalini mean. It was margaret sanger. Who ford with hitler. And one of the things about fascism that has always been intriguing to progressives they now look towards communism in china. This way that you snap your finger you get done you make the trains run on time. I was on a train with tom..

"But he's the leader of that caucus. I do not understand how you go to congress as a democrat. You wanna go there. The people send you there as a democrat. You picked the party. Nobody forced you to be a democrat. Why are you there. Not trying to make things forward. I don't understand it at all. If i served one term and ever had elected again. I would add these. Do i win third to do. And i could walk away knowing you know. Hey i lost. But i think they're doing what i said i would do to call an audible here and take this wonderful Lineup that we put together to talk about today once. Jump on down to this whole area of the budget crisis in the related crisis of build bag better. And what's going on there and the michigan perspective on that well there's a looming crisis for the national and world economy possible shutdown of the united states government thanks to mitch mcconnell and his republicans supplicants. It would come later this week. Republicans are unwilling to vote for anything that would be good for the nation even keeping the doors open and especially anything related to the president's built back better program. Debbie dingle she's angry. i think. I'm amy everybody because we should not should not be playing up. We should be coming together because there is so much at stake. Republicans are just enjoying watching this fight. But i'm gonna tell the public we will get this out because failure is not an option. The foundation of the debate is the president's. Bill beck better program to date republican talking points and the media coverage of that debate as focused on the price tag of the proposals. A total of more than six trillion. Dollars senator debbie stab now serves on the senate. Finance committee says the discussion needs to shift to the benefits of the bill. And the fact that it's fully funded through mary popular taxes. What is so often. Messed in 'em disarray. Frustrating to me and my colleagues really what we're trying to do. It's not about a top number. This is really about attacking the biggest crisis of our lifetime which is climate crisis. Which by the way my and policy committee just put out a report this week that in the last five years we've spent about one hundred twenty six billion dollars a year just picking up the pieces. We're going to have next week. More emergency spending. We have strong agreement that there's a crisis that we have to address. We know that there are so many concerts that keep families up at night and that's really what we're talking about going to childcare cost to medicine and silent. So how do we bring together those things that we all agree. We need to get done and look at what that means in terms of costs. And how do we finance it polling shows that the taxes proposed to pay for the plan are extremely popular and senator stab now says democrats need to hammer in the fact that the bill does not rely on borrowing more money or on raising taxes on anyone making less than four hundred thousand dollars a year. Jim being big debate though really is the difference between republicans in power who gave a two trillion dollars tax. Cut tim going billionaires. We gave the largest task cup for working families earlier in the year and we want to continue that and we want to pay for it by making the wealthy pay their fair share and so we all agree on that. So it for us. It's it's the sausage making hard. There's a lot of moving pieces right now but fundamentally we know that we've got to have a tax system it's fair for the majority of americans not just a few people what's mind-blowing about this christine is. All the polling shows that the entire plan.

"People are still going to stick abortions they're just gonna it unsafely. We're gonna have people coming in. And i dread some coming in with infection or bleeding. Because mr craig decided that getting an abortion was illegal. That's rob davidson. He's the executive director of the committee to protect healthcare and an emergency room physician. The non ruling by the supreme court on the texas abortion law thrusts women's health care rights into the spotlight and democrats all too happy to point out the differences between the two parties. I'm we'll sort. We don't have the option of not continuing to fund the government if we shut the government down in the middle of a pandemic a shame all of us will the us government shutdown. Thanks senate republicans. Debbie dingle says it cannot and will not happen. I'm christine berry also this week. The state budget is passed standby for whitmer line item. "Steve scalise and McCarthy kept her from being an actual parties She wanted to work her way into the case of the party but somehow politically that didn't happen But so she got noticed when we made our filing because she wanted to file an omega spray for head filed and to make us free I mean all these people especially you're right Alito needs to come right out or we start impeachment proceedings for him Because this is insanity This is no I mean and the Supreme Court had already ruled that the election was valid and had already done that unanimously several times But the real ruling didn't come out until after January 6th Came out It didn't come out until a couple of days until a couple of days after But that was after that was after the certification took place I just love the idea that Nancy Pelosi tricked them by bringing them back after the insurrection through the capitol They didn't scare her off like they were surprised What They didn't run and cower for the rest of the day They came back and did their constitutional duty 'cause she's a badass That's what she is She will go down in history as one of the greatest speakers of the House I think Yeah As far as the way she gets things done absolutely She's a very very effective speaker And she knows what she's doing She won't bring a vote to the floor unless she knows she's got the votes Right And I think zoloft said on the air on CNN yesterday nobody counts votes better than Nancy Pelosi And she knows how to finagle people that might not be on her side She's like well what do you need from me She knows how to negotiate with Democrats as well as Republicans if need be She's very very good She's very good at that I mean with the progressive caucus which is the biggest caucus in the House she works with them and she has to work with the conservative Dems And she gets the votes I mean it's very rare that she doesn't get what she needs done And it's interesting that this time around you know we've been very aggravated with her for occasionally throwing the progressives to the side This time she's doing that to the moderate Yeah she is so called moderates And it's actually kind of pissed off the moderate It matters I read something today That said that we're enraged They were expecting Pelosi and President Biden to toss the progressives aside Their wants aside And to pressure them on the reconciliation bill and instead they're not Right They're actually instead pressuring the moderates And they're not used to that It's like wow wow wow I thought we were the adults I thought we're supposed to be treated like I was the progressives are just those you know those children over there and Bernie Sanders But otherwise it's interesting because everything that Biden wants everything that's in that Bill everything the progressives want pulls so tremendous Exactly The moderate agenda does not come close Exactly And the thing that they need to for me to promote is that $3.5 trillion a is over ten years and it's paid for It's not like we're spending money It is getting paid for by taxing people that can afford the taxes If I need over $400,000 a year tax me I'm fine with that That's a lot of money And we know that investment in the programs that that act that act invests in actually ends up allowing people to make more money and bring in greater tax revenue Exactly And the program's cost I mean these are no brainers but Democrats have not gotten have not created a language that allows them to explain that to say you know if we help people with child care if we give if we help families with home healthcare for their elderly relatives that means that those people that were taking care of them can go to work and go to work and you know there's just so many things in there that could actually benefit the economy at large and Democrats haven't come up with a way of selling it in a few words Do you think we could hire Frank luntz away from the Republicans Because he's very good at that You don't need some question why not We need to come up with something like you know like life giving home care Right Something like that Home care freedom or a child care freedom let's get rude on it Let's get rid of it You get on it and see if you can get us some bumper stickers That's it That's it that's all you got That's it off the top of my head I mean I'm sorry I need to focus group some of this Exactly what that's what lunch does exactly And I did love your wise Barney rebel yelling at Debbie dingell That was very funny Oh Yeah for Marjorie Taylor green Yeah Always dresses like Barney rubble She does She's got blond hair she's stout and she dresses in sleeveless and she always wears something sleeveless She's just out there you know You're feeling those three toes Well her feet look like loaves of bread with three gumdrops in the end Held on by toothpicks You're right Yeah she's out there bellowing about anti choice yelling at dingle Debbie dingle about the voting for a bill that would assist women who want abortions and she even said better to the capitol On the steps of the capital it's like what are you She said literally that abortions happen up until the time of birth And it's like no No Anything trimester Yeah any third trimester termination of a pregnancy trust me the person carrying that pregnancy did not want to have to do that You don't waste that long You just don't You know Women don't put their bodies through all of that Right Yeah I mean that's the thing that gets one part of it that gets lost in this is that you know yes we talk about the life choices that women women should have but this is also about something that affects the health of a woman even in a healthy pregnancy Absolutely It absolutely you know creates you know changes in women's bodies that can be harmful in the long run We have a friend of mine's wife Yeah they shouldn't have to And a friend of mine's wife when I was in college she was pregnant and within two months she was bedridden because every time she got up she'd get cramps and start bleeding So she was literally in bed for 7 months of her pregnancy because just going to the bathroom was almost dangerous for her And that's just that's insane I mean she had a she had a successful birth I mean the baby was fine and healthy But bedridden for 7 months who can do that And so the notion that you go through that for 7 or 8 months and then go you know what Nah Nah I'm done You know yeah exactly I mean for anybody to say that it's just she's just being hurt She said she did she just say recently that she was the most consequential House member or something Everything that she's done she can't do anything She's not on any committees She can't bring money to anybody It's very highly of herself She does miss rubble Barney's sister It is Barney rebel's twin sister Exactly Exactly Bernice rubble Bernice there it is with Bernice rubble Bernice rumble There we go And on that nut rude thank you so much for calling in and I get to see God only four days apart I know I know amazing Yeah Please follow his blog Yes rude pundit dot blogs but dot com Bye rude Great to see.

Cove it and all that plug in hybrids forty-three percent increase lost months plugging share. So that is anything where they plug sake on. The side of it ended a twenty eight percent. Well look we're all friends here. Let's call it thirty. In fact let's call it almost a third. Let's do that almost a third of new car sold in germany. How to plug sake on and fifteen percent pure battery electric. I mean it's just incredible. Isn't it gemini. The home of so many of those diesel gates stories came from now moving to electric so so quickly. I love reporting on stories like this. I'm going to look back up point in time when everyone's driving electric cars and i look back up. Twenty-nine seen to. Maybe i don't know i just feel like we're a golden age right now. This news breaks every single day. There's not a day goes by where. There's not an incredible headline like this. And i absolutely love bringing you the news. It's so amazing. We'll look if we can get to a nice thirty percent or more that's amazing in germany. I mean incredible. We'll be watching that at the end of the very closely but you might be asking one of the cows that sold very well. The little electric volkswagen up walls bested this time by its three sibling. which went to number one tesla's model three did pretty well actually in what they call them off month now. The way tesla do it. Because ships arriving they tend to have peaks and troughs but even off month to register three thousand model threes. That's really really good. Also magazine have been driving the neo. Es eight and that's next in the news today. Few models exemplified the global car industry. Then they neo. Es eight they say the first four ev's from a chinese firm arriving that is now this company now with more than b. m. w. for instance. It's a seven seat. Suv and it was developed. Es eight has its own dedicated. E platform has one hundred kilowatt hour battery and is ninety six percent aluminium to keep the white down to two thousand four hundred kilograms also say the battery has three hundred eleven miles of range which will clearly beaten each on by well over fifty miles but the right of charging on the neo. Asa i didn't realize it's nine hundred kilowatts which is not slow. But it's not you know quick in that segment if you aren't going to if you're in i pace. Hr on territory. Ninety is slow but remember neo do battery swapping and so does it matter if you swap your battery it who cares. If it charges at ninety it takes six minutes to go in and get a whole. Fresh new pack fully charged with a high dashboard heist. A nine point. Eight inch digital dial display a an eleven point three inch touchscreen for the infotainment as got no me as well it's a little kind of Little kind of semi circular thing that sits on the dashboard. But yeah it's this little smiley face thing that'll pivot and look at you when you asked it kinda freaky very chinese high-tech right meeting on let's talk jag. We make now hoping they're not gonna try and squeeze anything else in anything plug in hybrid now. They wouldn't be that stupid. It'll be all electric cars. Surely and that means that when he got the face so they should just say provides the i pace. There's nothing else right. Let's talk riven. Couple more stories. The one truck is now rolling off the assembly line in normal illinois. I don't believe those trucks have arrived with customers. That'd be on youtube by now. It makes the news. So i think it's still in storage but either way they should be in customers hands any minute. Now and yesterday riviera introduced a membership program little grunt riviera owners access to complementary charging that riven adventure network and the way point charges says tech crunch the surveys includes ravines off road assistance additional coverage which will send a recovery truck to come and get yet if you run out of battery charge. Hd review gets twelve months of it for free after that. You can pay the amount of my dough. No they haven't said but finally in the news. The south china morning post like looking at chinese media what was interesting. How they report stories elon. Musk has given the thumbs up. China's comic as the domestic car market less than three months off. He was also a few symphonies. Praise about the country's economic development earlier this year tesla had a series of runnings with regulators and customers now elon. Musk said. chinese comic is strong when it comes to the software needed to make vehicles smarter on the way to full autonomy. He stopped short of mentioning any specific manufacturers earlier this year tesla had to make efforts to try and smooth things over with both officials and customers tesla's banned from official military areas because of the cameras on them Concerns over the quality. The safety of their cars customers making a big song and dance about their issues with tesla in return testimony. A bit of a pr offensive. Try and fight back. And they recently built a data center in shanghai. Now that handles all the data which is coming from the cars. After beijing pushed for that data to live in the country and to have it stored locally yet as far as i know and correct me. If i'm wrong if you know differently every car every ev sold in china is a connected car obviously and all of that data telematics where you are where you went. How fast do you went. Sits on a chinese serve and all of that information is available to the government. I mean you wouldn't be surprised. It's china off rural. Just the way they do things that'd be not rural he tried to anywhere else Slave choice exactly. So as far as i know. That's the case with tesla. So of course tesla have cameras as well. So i'm presuming all of that. Data sits on the shanghai data center and part of the deal of doing business in china is the government gets access to that. So i guess in theory somebody from the government could dial in and see who you're in the car with and way you went and what you were talking about. I mean i guess people say if you got nothing to hide people you know you could be surveilled and watched but yeah. I'm not sure they could get away with that anywhere else. But of course in china there is no option. You want to do business. You plays by the rules of the policy right. Let's talk about question of the week with my no dot com is back and it returns tomorrow to take a week off. Say listen out for that. Took him about how long you can wait the e b. "Schanche guide more behind the scenes information more contacts than anybody. More friends behind the curtain. Sean hannity is on i. Twenty five till the top of the hour. Eight hundred nine. Four one sean. If you wanna be a part of the program a magnificent display of public policy you know. This is the the biggest airlift ever. You know this is an extraordinary success. Unparalleled results we made the right decision. Wise decision best decision. No it was the worst decision. Here's joe biden with his mission accomplished moment from Yesterday claiming an extraordinary success last night in kabul the united states ended twenty years of war afghanistan. The longest war in american history be completed in one of the biggest airlifts in history with more than one hundred twenty thousand people evacuated safety. That number is more than double. What most experts over possible no nation no nation has ever done anything like it in all history the only the united states at the capacity and the will to do it and we did it today. The extraordinary success of this mission was due to the incredible skill bravely and selfless courage. In the united states military our diplomats and intelligence professionals. We'll get to your calls. Eight hundred nine. Four one sean. If you wanna be a part of the program then we'll talk to gold star fathers. That lost their sons last week in a terrorist attack at karzai international airport An extraordinary success. No i don't think it could have been a worse failure. There was a situation that evolved on the house floor yesterday. I wanted to get it straightened out. What exactly happened at where they literally made the decision. The democrats are in charge to close the house floor before honoring the thirteen. Fallen marines in afghanistan which republicans wanted to do anyway congressman. Brian masse told the floridian we gavelled in had a prayer said. The pledge took a moment of silence and pretty much all republican vets then asked to be recognized to read the names and bring up afghanistan legislation. They wouldn't acknowledge us and just close the house down. Congressman stupi of florida said house. Democrats just refused to recognize republican veterans on the house floor to read the names of our fallen servicemembers in afghanistan. That's how far our nation has fallen. Never mind the hundreds. If not thousand plus americans left behind enemy lines which joe biden swore. He'd never do congress. I just want to get the lowdown. What really happened yesterday. Yes sound thanks for having me. It's it's pretty much the way. Brian laid it out We were there more than forty members of congress who are republicans veterans who have served their country in uniform and now serve their country in congress. Were standing on the floor waiting to be recognized by. Debbie dingle democrat. Who walked in. As brian said they went through the prayer. The pledge a moment of silence and we asked to be recognized and she turned around and walked away from us and as she was walking away one of the members yelled at her and said we just want to read the names of the service members who were who were killed and she just kept right on walking and what was interesting behind the scenes behind the speakers lobby. She was standing as we. Were walking out next to cnn reporter. It was basically apologizing to And i heard her say. This was the her lowest moment in congress. So she'll say that behind closed doors but she won't recognize members of congress to simply read the names of those fallen servicemembers who died because of joe biden's lack of leadership. It's it's pretty stunning to me. It's thirteen names. Wouldn't have been wouldn't have taken long. Brian mass lost two legs and and had other severe injuries while fighting for his country. There you would think that that they would would allow something as simple as that. Take place any any reason. Why no she. She refused to even other than basically apologizing to us as we laughed. And then we walk straight to a press conference and gave a press conference About what we wanted to do if we were recognized On top of recognizing the servicemembers sacrificed on the floor. No no reason it's all politics. They know if they recognize. They have to answer to the american people about what we wanna do. And and there's bills that we wanna pass there's a discharge petition that's now been filed and all we need to get is three democratic members of congress because every republican will sign this and it will force a vote on the floor to the atrocity. That's occurred in afghanistan for some accountability to happen. So hopefully there's three brave democrats out. There that are willing to sign that discharge petition which would then force vote on this bill that we're filing i appreciate the update and for setting straight Congressman it's so sad and You know for the joe biden nicole. This extraordinary success unparalleled results. The right wise and best decision magnificent display of public policy is nauseating to me. We now have. Americans trapped behind enemy lines hostages to the taliban. And that's the reality and they see that you can't spin out of that. I never thought i'd see my lifetime. Sir i never thought in the history of our nation we would have president saying that an extraordinary success is the death of thirteen service members and literally leaving americans behind enemy lines to fend for themselves. It's it's very sad and dark day for our country right now. Appreciate you being with us. Congressman stupi seventeen district florida. Thank you so much. Where is the seventeenth district by the way. Maybe i'll be or maybe i'll maybe you could be my congressman southwest florida so sarasota down the league county and into the heartland of florida highlands okeechobee. Heart sodo The heartland of florida. And it's actually probably one district. I could even run win. But i'd never would but you have roots in naples so appreciate all you're doing. Thank you so much for your hard work. We appreciate it. Thank you eight hundred nine. Four one sean. If you want to be a part of the program Rodney's in virginia rodney. Hi how are you. Thanks for calling. Glad you joined us on Great compeer i'm just wondering to say thanks for you. Do and thanks for take the call joseph and they're talking about making it all about his You know his his son and you know he had nine years to say goodbye his son and you know these these. These family members didn't have that opportunity chance you know because it happened in a flash and shouldn't happen if this was a success this mission was neil mission was a success. We would have gotten everybody out. No one would have died and we would have taken all our equipment out too well so you know this whole thing was not a success is a was a you know a a train wreck and it i i you know i i didn't neo operations.

The arrow airlift from saigon didn't happen until two weeks after a peace deal was signed the evacuate evacuation of kabul's happening within two weeks. Still left under biden's own time for the end of the mission. They haven't gotten every american out of there. The white house clearly isn't prepared for this. They're out there. We can disagree and it was right to pull the troops out which by not own bow. I didn't want to be involved in nation-building well you left all the weapons of the cache of weapons and munitions for the taliban and all the the armored vehicles and everything in between so not only. Did you leave. And not take the munitions and an ammo. "I've been watching those. They have been rising. It's a critical component of so many family budgets. If those don't tame. I think they're gonna have issues grocery workers getting above fifteen dollars an hour. That's a data. Point that i did not expect heather long. Thank you very much. Joining us now is democratic congressman mark visi of texas. He is vice chair for strategy at the democratic congressional campaign committee carson. Visi welcome to the last word. Okay so curse maloney said that. If the election were held today democrats would lose the majority. Are you that part that pessimistic always have to take hold onto your majority very seriously but also think that we do need to make sure that we're counting these economic numbers that you just talked about five point four percent unemployment you're looking at job growth And very spectacular way here even texas. We were doing very well here and had a lot of growth before the pandemic and continued to have some growth even during the And things are really picking backed up. Here is something that you can almost physically see when you go out and about In dallas fort worth every day. And so we need to make sure that we're touting these numbers and that we're talking about the president's infrastructure plan because it's going to put even more people back to work and if you're a conservative. Hey i think that you gotta be happy. Because the last time the economy was doing this remarkably wail and had turned around so quickly You have the president saying that i. It was a morning in america. And he's someone that is obviously very well bike on that side and about ronald reagan. And so every this is these are numbers that everybody should be able to get. So when congressman maloney says to your conference that we we have to quote course correct. What does that mean. does that mean talking. More forthrightly about the president's economic agenda or is it something else. I don't want to guess at exactly. What term maloney was speaking about But i think that You know that we need to drive these numbers home and talk about the fact that the economy is doing so well under biden and one of the reasons why students so well is. I believe is that he took a getting shots in people's arms very seriously the last president really as sort of by wavered on this and in people that may be covert really. Wasn't real you took lysol. It would fix it. Ain't just a bunch of crazy things like that and having a president be very serious about this and speak to the american public and a very sobering way. I think help drive the numbers up which in turn helped bring the unemployment rate down and again we need to make sure that we are driving that message. All our advisor. I hear what you're saying but you got to things that are going against you. One is historical it's the mid-term jinx Not since two thousand and two has a president in power in the first term has had his party not lose the majority. That was when president. George w bush was in the white house. He didn't lose the majority in the house. He actually gained seats in congress. And the other thing which is even more potent is that you're now facing redistricting and i remember talking to election. Forecasts are rachel. Bitta coffer in preparation for my show. The sunday show where i asked her. Okay so which house races are you looking at. Which ones should we be paying attention to and she said that is almost impossible one because of redistricting into once re the districts are redrawn redrawn. Democrats stand to lose ten seats in the house before vote is even cast. So how do you go up against those two twin tidalwaves. Well first of all. Let me just say Got to put the guardrails backed up on the voting rights. Act that. there's any question about that. I'm from a state that was under section five dollars and it's one of the reasons why the democrats have the amount they haven't takes us right now. The republicans were far more segement sales in two thousand eleven. But we were able to get that overturned because the section five. If we're not able to put the guardrails back up on section five and get the john lewis act passed then you're going to see the republicans attempt to draw farinas seats in texas alone. And if you look at arizona you look at florida north carolina. You look at georgia. They really want to try to run the score up in those states in. Run the score up. Not just democrats first republican. They're going to be discriminated against hispanic and black voters in these states by taking away their opportunity to choose the representative of their choice. And so we we absolutely have to take that seriously. Because reynaud redistricting your. I don't wanna definitely don't want underplay redistricting. This is looming very large in two thousand and twenty two visa woman question for you and and it pertains to congresswoman debbie dingle of michigan who was warning the party in two thousand sixteen. Hey hey hey pay. Attention to donald trump. The guy. He could win while now. She is saying that democrats aren't quote breaking through. Why don't you think democrats are breaking through. I guess particularly there in michigan and debbie ingles district. You know we should always listen to debbie. She's one of our dp. Rdpc co-chair she does a great job. She has pulse on people of michigan and integrate way and You know we need to go. Sit down and talk and see what we need to do. I mean look. It's it's it's two thousand twenty one We have until november of two thousand twenty two before we have an election. But we're we're talking about these things than we're talking about messaging There's gonna be a lot that's going to be done between now and the end of the year To get ourselves in at and find out. What's you know what is important to the american public. I think obviously again driving these numbers home on on the On the economy what biden is going to be hugely key. But you know there's a lot going on right now. In in america people are concerned about a covert nineteen. And what have you. But but once we get into full campaign years my opinion That the american public is going to be paying very close. Attention to the democrats will weep while rollout what we've been doing and what the president's been doing. I think it's going to be something that a lot of people were going to wipe not just democrats either. Jonathan i think is going to to have broad appeal mass appeal and that we will see those results play out in two thousand twenty two all congressman mark. Vc we will find out and we'll have you back that give your assessment. Thank you for joining us tonight. Absolutely coming up the latest on the delta variant including the.

"To them on dropbox and we love it all right. Let's talk about the midterms usually the party. That's expected to lose seats in a midterm. We'll put on a brave face and spin reporters with a lot of talk. That everyone knows is bullshit but not are democrats. Dan democrats politico reported this week. That that d triple seat chair. Sean patrick maloney recently told his most vulnerable incumbents that if the election were held today they would lose the majority. His prediction was based on new. Polling showed democrats falling behind republicans by six points on generic ballot in battleground districts when asked about the data the detroit c.'s. Executive director told politico. We are not trying to hide. This story was specifically focused on concern over. The party's message. What is that concern. And do you agree with it. Well i i wanna just say kudos to sean patrick maloney and the digital say. This is the right thing to do right. I mean i was thinking about the happy talk doesn't get you anywhere just telling everyone like we're fine. We're going to win it's great. Yeah everyone in the party donors activists members need to be crystal clear about how steep hill. We have before us. And i was thinking back. Did you remember in two thousand and ten when our friend. And then what else. Presbytery robert gibbs. What on meet the press. And i think david gregory was hosted the time he asked him whether ask you were. There was a chance. Democrats could lose the house and he gives said yes. Which was patently obvious thing. It wasn't likely at the time in what you said about warning signs were everywhere. I mean unemployment was ten percent like it was pretty possible. Wasn't great and the house. Democrats went bananas on him. I think steny hoyer held a press conference. Just to attack robert gibbs for remember that it was brutal they were so mad at him and he was sure right gives love that. Yeah yeah yeah. It was very Contentious if you owe meetings robert in the legislative affairs team around that time like this is the right thing to do. People need to be aware of the challenge before us. And that's important. Now this specific messaging question In this story debbie dingle who is a congresswoman from michigan and one of the savviest members politically she Democratic operative for long time. The widow congressman john. Nichols you serve his seat. She said our message is not breaking through. And that's exactly right. That is what's happening. We've talked with us before. I think this is a megaphone problem. That a message problem. It's like people it's other. Were saying the wrong things is that people are not hearing them because we do not have the apparatus to get to them. There is some good news on this. There was a report last week. I think that democratic groups were going to spend a hundred million dollars in the during the month of august on messaging. Around the bipartisan infrastructure. Deal and the and the jobs and family plan to communicate to voters about it and so there is. There are some cavalry coming But yeah people have ever right to be concerned. It is seem somewhat patently obvious that if the election were held today we will lose the house because for i think about it this way. If joe biden's fifty point six which is a very respectable and good at providing present it. What are we in. That's a national poll that includes california new york etc. What do we think. His approval rating is in districts that either trump won or biden did less well than his national numbers and we know that generic democrats underperformed bided in these districts. And so this is obvious but it's important to say exactly what needs to be aware of the work ahead of us. I do agree that we're not breaking through with our message. I sort of always agree with that. It's very hard to break through the message. We've talked about that a million times. I i sort of wonder if it's more of an economy problem. General mood problem than it is a message problem and i wondered that because of a couple of things from this polling you know they said that both the american rescue plan in the american jobs plan in this pulling are incredibly popular. Incredibly popular with swing voters in battleground districts. Right not just like base. Democrats people love these plans and yet only forty two percent of the people in this in these polls Battleground voters trust democrats on the economy. And so and they also. Debbie dingle said that when she goes home to michigan in her in her district people. The democrats aren't doing enough to boost the economy so clearly. It seems like there is some financial concerns around the country. Economic concerns around the country and people don't feel the economy is where it should be and they don't see democrats doing enough to fix it now. Partly that can be solved by you know better. Messaging and spending a lot of money delivering that message to voters and saying look. We are doing a lot to help you. Here's what we're here's what we've already passed. And here's what we're fighting for now. I think that's That's a necessity. But i wonder if it truly get until the economy gets fixed and things are going well when people say. Oh yeah now. I feel like i'm doing better in my own life and i'm looking around the economy and things are good. I don't know i mean. Joe biden mailed a thousand dollar check to tens of millions of people in it didn't affect his approval rating down that does speak to the limits of white can. What else are they going to do that. It's more popular like the stuff in the or more impactful to people's lives. No i guess. What i'm saying is like until inflation comes in until until people say okay. Inflation really isn't a long term problem. it was temporary. It's coming down and now i'm in a better mood. Like i think that you know one thing you keep seeing in these polls in focus groups to is people just keep mentioning the inflation issue. And they're saying yeah maybe he gave me a thousand dollar check but now prices are rising. So what the fuck i. Which is biden has very little control over almost enough. Yeah no that's that's the challenge always economy. The president gets all the blame all the credit and has only limited influence on what actually happens. I mean i remember us like watching like bank. Default rates in greece being a really relevant reelection factor. Remember so you have a couple of choices here. I think we cannot leave this topic of keeping the house without pointing out that all of the messaging billions of dollars in ads would be less impactful than passing a one page bill in the senate that band partisan gerrymandering. That's the biggest problem and this is not the usual. Seems fall trump. after moe's fall. That's joe manchin cures cinemas cinemascope because everyone else's for that they pass that. But that is we that would if you had a choice between one hundred billion dollars in democratic ads between now and november or passing the one page ban on partisan gerrymandering about what would help us the most and keeping the house. It would definitely be gerrymandering been. I completely agree with that though. I was sort of thinking about it from the other perspective which is na world. i don't want people to think that the reason that the houses in jeopardy is only because of republican gerrymandering even. That's the biggest reason that if there were no gerrymandering we would still pose like this where the democratic challenger or the democrat is six points behind a republican in a battleground district. We have other problems to fix. So i don't want people just thinking like our messages perfect enough. All if only we just passed independent redistricting commissions. Everything would be great. Yeah we should. We should under independent redistricting commissions and eliminate ten republican states in california as one possible. Fuck which i think you can actually about initiative but you get my point but yeah it. The other thing is not to be overly dark about this but this is a poll of juryman districts. We don't even know how you're the that's what i'm saying. This is the best case scenario people. We got a lot of problems. We got a lot of problems but the other thing the other messaging question here is this will lead us into our next topic is should we spend money and time and energy advertising. What democrats have done to make your life better or should we spend time and energy.

And because it's been in the news a lot lately and obviously tons of congressional things are on the of the topical burner. But i don't know where congressman jim banks is better and greater effect either on this infernal january. Sixth committee where he would have served with distinction along with jim jordan who was also summarily dispatched by nancy pelosi. I somehow perceive. And maybe it's because i wanted republicans to boycott this pig. Poke i have a feeling that the interviews he's been able to do and the things we've been able to say since being bounced from the committee might have even been of more value. Let's ask him indiana congressman. Jim banks mark davis pleasure. To have you on the hugh hewitt show how you doing sir. Hey good morning mark. Thanks for having me. So what's your thought. I mean i know you wanted to. I mean you're you're having conversations with chairman bennie thompson about how to bring some even-handedness to this january. Sixth the dog and pony show. That would have been nice. But i think this committee is is is collapsing under its own partisan weight. And you've had some things to say about that in the intervening days that might even more value. I don't know what do you think it's a great way to put it marketing. It's obvious at this point. That pelosi isn't isn't interested. All in an investigation is only interested in building narrative which is a anti-trump anti republican anti Millions of americans who voted for donald trump. She wants to. She wants this all to be about that. She doesn't wanna talk at all about why. The capitol was vulnerable on january six. And what we could do to to fix fix the issues at the very systemic breakdown of leadership at the at the highest levels of the capitol police which is a bureaucratic issue. She's not interested that she's obviously interested in the american people. See it for for what it is. I mean in fact I don't know if you saw this a couple of days ago. Harvard of all places put out a whole showed that fifty eight percent of the american people. Think that this committee is biased. To begin with so to your point. I mean the. The committee process that the american people see. See for what it is. It's a political stunt. It isn't all about investigating. What happened on january six to to do everything that we can't make sure that never happens again. I've heard a number of people phrase. This and i'll try to encapsulated that. Usually a committee has questions and they investigate things. Mma yield the answers that they have secured in this particular case. They have the answers. They have the narrative they're just looking to solidify it. How long will will the this drama be allowed to to drag can do it. As long as they want free country for the moment so how. How long is this committee going to continue to see then wring its hands about this i. I'm only predicting the way it's going. So far mark you can see this lasting until november of twenty twenty two. I mean for obvious reasons. Right i mean this is their they. They've they've made their their platform their agenda in this congress almost entirely focused on january six and and again going after republicans. Something Yesterday happened. That was very significant though democrats just got. They're pulling back and it didn't look good sean. Maloney d triple c chair from from new york Calls all the democrats together and says hey guys. We have a big problem. Our messaging isn't breaking through and republican if the electoral holiday public is there to win back the majority. I don't need to pull the tell us that. Because you when you when you get out around the country would come back to fort wayne. Indiana aah right now you feel it. You feel the momentum. The american people know that these democrats are not focused on what they care about. Which is inflation on the rise record. Crime waves Occurring in cities all over america the crisis at the border on top of all of that the anti-americanism critical race theory being taught in our schools and shoved on our military. That's what the american people care about. The democrats are almost exclusively focused on january six and the d. The d triple c. Polling is showing that to be the case so they they've they've Rang the alarm bells They did it yesterday. There's there's a couple of a couple of stories that they can politico this morning about the of even warnings from debbie dingle michigan saying we got. She's the chief messenger of the democrat party. They they know they have a big problem. I think i think mark to get to the bottom line. Their problem is that they're focused on the past their focus on january six. They're not focused on the future. And there's not a there is not a political leader or a political party and the history of the world that was successful but the by being focused on the past and not being focused on the future. And that that's why i have a sense the republicans are are not gonna win back majority. We're gonna went back big a strong republican majority in the midterm election in the house. And i think there's a good chance we do it in the senate even though at all the pregnancy care say that can't happen. If this is a wave election wave election feel you could see us winning back. Majorities in both chambers. I don't believe in jinks is and i certainly don't want anybody to get overconfident. But doggone it looks like the landscape late. I want to talk about a couple of those other things too but lasting on the committee. They've been at their devious work for just days. Just a handful of days and they've already vanished into the tapestry. They're already being ignored. They've they've earned the obscurity that they so richly deserve an to imagine this going on for another month is hard another six months hard. You're talking about them. Still holding some semblance of sessions through november of next year. Yeah i i don't know that they can keep it up but they're gonna do everything they can to try but they wanted this circus. They want nonstop coverage on all the networks like they had last week By the way i created a website could've pelosi vetoed me and and jim jordan for this committee but i created a website veto pelosi dot com inclined more facts about what the real questions are about january six and and how to help us by back against a pelosi political stunts like very cool veto pelosi dot com latte nuts and bolts. Question on this. I think a lot of republicans Probably jim jordan key among them and kevin mccarthy among them are going to get subpoenaed by this committee. Should those subpoenas be honored or ignored or something in between well pretend to know how that how that process works or how how will play out. But it just goes to show that how how Just how fake of processes i mean. This is really about investigating january six. And what caused it issuing a subpoena to kevin mccarthy because he had a phone call at the very end of the day at toward the end of the activities of that day with president trump. Or the same jim jordan. It just goes to show. It's not about what they say it's about that that's not. That's not investigating. What led up to what happened on january six th that's dragging republicans through the but and and create political theater. It is a couple of minutes last couple of minutes with congressman jim banks. You got a tweet milan. Just last hour the house. Gop needs to make reforming and raining in the powers of the cbc. One of our top priorities. When we win back the majority let me. Have you weigh in on that and the notion of the eviction moratorium. Because that actually came from the cdc what is government doing getting its nose in between the the relationship between landlords and tenants. It's clearly unconstitutional. In fact before. I as i tweeted. I thought you know what they've done is clearly illegal. It's unconstitutional i mean. Even joe biden said we know. I know this is unconstitutional. But we're going to do anyway but We have rain in the cdc have to read any of these agencies or they're led by unelected bureaucrats if republicans can't get that we didn't get that we've failed at that when we had the majority in the.

"With and the communication impediment were talking about. There's multiple ones but it's you know Deaf hard of hearing if you're on the autism spectrum anything that might cause you to have difficulty to interact properly with the police suspend for the police to know that so they don't think you're just you know not complying and as someone who who worked with a guy who was not technically death but could not hear a saying you thought he was so hard to communicate with. You thought he was an idiot and he wasn't an idiot he actually. If you knew him you knew he was an idiot but he sounded like that because he would until he got his implants. Just he'd never it'd be like hey you have one of these for me. And he'd say about three o'clock you know he just didn't know what you're saying and another community that's impacted by this too. Are the autistic. They have communications difficulties in many cases and it is can be easily misunderstood as being obstruction or being angry. A lot of things that police don't like and so this is really good for the tens of thousands of not hundreds of thousands of autistic adults in the state of michigan. Speaking of bipartisan. We've got bipartisanship in washington. Dc that begins today. Tuesday in the house of representatives with the selection committee investigating january six. That's bipartisan. Of course. Because nancy pelosi appointed a couple of republicans to the committee since kevin mccarthy wasn't interested in anything to do with investigating something. Donald trump and kevin mccarthy may have instigated one of those watching all this very closely as michigan's. Debbie dingle little the house minority leader for not taking this inquiry seriously. Wish that minority leader kevin mccarthy would appoint people that we know wanting to be objective and get to the facts. But i do think it's important that they're beaten publicans on this so people don't accuse it of being carson. Whatever were they wanna use a day. Dan kildee says the reason. For mccarthy's lack of support for the investigation is pretty simple. Mccarthy could and should be a witness well. there's a critical moment when kevin mccarthy spoke to president trump and it's been reported second hand that the president was essentially saying that while kevin mccarthy wasn't as upset about the election as these people were essentially implying that kevin's position wasn't the righteous one. Unfortunately for mr mccarthy that may have been a very brief moment of truth for him but that was a critical moment. There are a number of these moments during the insurrection where there was communication between members of congress perhaps president trump maybe others at the white house. Maybe the national guard leadership that is really important information that will help us fully understand the events that allow this attack to be as bad as it was. This is the reason that we want serious. People were willing to ask on. Its questions in seek the truth on this committee. Not people like mr banks mr jordan. Who are trying to pretend that this thing didn't happen that it was some sort of a field trip. I thank god that jim jordan is not on that committee. He's really good at turning anything into a circus. He missed his calling. He could have been the emmett kelly. We use the emmett kelly politics sometimes but so it. The lgbtq evert ellie the lgbtq campaign to get equal civil rights for all. The citizens of michigan took another setback on monday. The four-member state board of canvassers voted unanimously to reject. The petitions filed by farren equal michigan. That would have had referenda next year on adding lgbtq citizens to the michigan civil rights law. They are going to appeal it in the courts. This is not going to be resolved for very very long time at issue are signatures. That were collected electronically. State law doesn't talk about that. Yes or no. The board of canvassers voted in effect to say no to electromagnetic signatures not count them..

"debbie dingle" Discussed on Gun Talk

"Keep on coming several things going on here. We'll just cover a few of them representative. Us representative debbie. Dingle democrat from michigan. The wife with john dingell former representative. She is calling for the consumer product safety commission to be able to regulate firearms. Those of us old enough to remember congress took that away from the cpsc because the consumer product safety commission several decades ago said. Well we're going to regulate firearms as hazardous substance and we think we should ban handguns and they had the ability to do that. And congress went in her husband. John dingle who was a board member and block that so the consumer product safety commission cannot regulate firearms. And of course. I always say well you know we regulate teddy bears. But we don't regulate guns. That's not true. of course. Firearms are very heavily regulated. You don't think so. Try to buy one from a gun store without doing a background check. The fbi has to okay every single purchase of a gun from a gun store. Oh yeah gun. Stores have to be licensed and when gone is made it has to be tracked as it shipped a record of who made it and then where it was shipped on and on but they say yeah but teddy. Bears are more heavily regulated. Now that's a lie and the idea is just the same way that when the cdc so just for disease control they were going to study. Big air quotes study. Guns gun accidents gun. Deaths and congress took that ability away from them. Because why would they do that. Because the head of the agency. That part of the is going to study. That said our goal is to make guns like cigarettes dirty and banned their goal with their quote unquote. Study was to ban guns. So congress didn't know sorry that that's outside of your purview. And then with the consumer product safety commission said we're going to ban hang munition as hazardous subject substance. Congress had no. You can't do that and yet. Debbie dingle wants to give them the ability to ban ammunition to ban guns as a hazardous substance substance. Let's see over the six circuit. This is very interesting. You remember bump stocks ban. Two years ago. the case is still alive. The six circuit has taken on the bump stock case in march and divided panel six circuit invalidated the ban on bach. They're marika's pushing that. That's very interesting. And in in louisiana next door to texas remember texas just passed and governor abbott signed constitutional carry eliminating the need requirement to have a permit to exercise your second than it rights to keep him bear arms. But no easy anna. The legislature voted overwhelmingly to pass constitutional carry. But it was governor. John bel edwards vetoed it. He issued this statement. How many times if we heard one that goes like this. I won't read the whole state but only goes as far as i need to. Which is very far. I am a strong supporter of the second amendment and an enthusiastic outdoorsman and hunter. But i don't need any more. When i hear i am a strong supporter of the second amendment. But it means. I'm not just not book. Here's reality and the legislature is going to vote whether to come back into a special session. Try to override the veto. it's not a given. It's not a given that they could get the votes. If you're in louisiana need to be leading your legislators know how you feel about this well. It's not not a given that they're going to vote to come back into special session. I they have to vote to come back in a special session for all of them go back to baton rouge and then it's not a given that it can be overridden. Okay here's the dirty little political secret hannah. The governor is maybe more powerful than any other state at least as powerful because he has line item veto ability. Any legislator who crosses the governor suddenly finds it his or her district gets zero money. None wiped out. It's hard ball and the governor has not it all shy about doing that. I mean that that's the game. That's the tools that he s and that's the way he runs it governor edwards john bel edwards. He's term limited is his last term. He wants some other national position with democrats. And i am sure. There's somebody whispering in his ear and said you cannot sign constitutional. Carry bill and get elected or chosen for anything big in the democratic party. It's pure speculation on my part. But it's what i think it's probably going on there. So if you're in louisiana and you weren't constitutional kerry need to be contacting all of your congress rather Legislators and ask them to vote to override. The governor's veto kashio carry all right. Let's go to the phones lying. One thomas with us out of bakersfield california thomas your gun. Talk what you got tom. Hey i want to talk to you about pardon me the eighteen ninety pump action. We used to call it as la twin. Choose whatever We call it a gallery again. Or yeah yeah yeah. Yeah is that is that. Have the corncob arm on it. Yeah had exposed hammer. It was branding you when he was coming out of is pump action lever. Action thing matic's. I picked up. I picked up this ragged one at least chambered in a long twenty two long right for the. Wow this irag piece of crap arrested. It looked like saying it'd been rise right roll around the back of somebody pick up for a while anyway..

Could Your Next Car Say 'No' to Drunk Driving?

"In the United States alone. Thirty people die every day and drunk. Driving related crashes that equates to one person every forty eight minutes but simple technology to prevent and even possibly end drunk driving exists so why aren't carmakers required to implement it uh-huh new legislation in the United States aims to do just that to require all new cars be equipped with Alcohol Addiction Systems by two thousand twenty four the reduce impaired driving for everyone act of two thousand nineteen known as the riot act was introduced to Congress from both sides of the aisle by Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico and Rick. Scott out of Florida who co-sponsored the Senate bill and representative Debbie Dingle of Michigan in the House. Democrats and Republicans working together. The lawmakers believed the law could save seven thousand lives per year. We spoke by email with Ned. Adrian's Senator Udalls Communications Director. He said Udal saw the success. That ignition interlock. Technology had in reducing the number of alcohol related driving fatalities in New Mexico indices alcohol detection. Technology is a big part of the solution in preventing drunk drivers from. I'm getting behind the wheel. The Right Act doesn't just call for automakers to implement alcohol detection technology on their own. The bill also provides funding for research and development element of advanced alcohol detection software. The legislation will establish a pilot program fleet vehicles equipped with the software including those from federal state and private partners. That means the technology will be tested on vehicles before being mandated for consumers the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA is also also partnering with Automobile Manufacturers to help develop detection systems that can be installed in vehicles the NHTSA will work with the private on motive coalition for traffic safety as well as directly with vehicle manufacturers suppliers and other interested parties including institutions of higher education expertise and automotive engineering to develop the technology not once the pilot program is underway results will initially be evaluated in the first twelve months and again every one hundred and eighty days the target eight for implementing the federally mandated. Technology in. All new vehicles will be no more than two years after the law is enacted as for how it will actually work. We can get some insight from current technology though that doesn't necessarily reflect the future an ignition interlock device or I I D- is essentially a breathalyzer connected to a car's ars ignition system once it's installed the car won't start until someone breathes into. Id with an alcohol. Free Breath. Drivers also can't disconnect the devices uses without damaging the vehicle. It's possible for a driver to trick these devices by having someone else provide the breath sample but the device is also demand rolling samples at regular intervals while the vehicle is in motion. Making it difficult for anyone other than the driver to comply and the statistics show that they work in May of Twenty nineteen mothers against drunk driving announced that in-car breathalyzers stop drivers who were drunk from starting their cars or three million times since two thousand six. That's that's when mad began pushing for ignition interlocks for every drunk driver mad collected. It's data from eleven ignition interlock manufacturers. The data found that. ID's stopped opt almost three hundred and forty eight thousand attempts by drivers with alcohol in their system.

In two thousand eighteen alone lifesaver a provider of interlock devices and services says says on its website. T-Mobile says Sprint merger will boost 5G speeds by up to 6 times

"Pending merger of sprint and T mobile that subcommittees chaired by Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania. Before we get started. I want to express my condolences to congresswoman Debbie Dingle on the loss of her husband. John John was a dear friend and mentor to me and many members of this committee is passion for oversight accountability legislative process in his lifetime of public services. An example to all of us his passing is great loss door nation, the congress and this committee, which he loved so much John may you rest in peace. Jerrell now recognize himself for five minutes. Welcome to the subcommittee on communication and technologies hearing on protecting consumers and competition and examination of the T mobile sprint merger. This hearing is noteworthy because the last time a merger hearing was had before the subcommittee was almost nine years ago. And in that time there have been numerous mergers within the subcommittee's jurisdiction that have gone without a hearing. I believe it's the duty of this subcommittee to allow our members to publicly discussing debate the merits of these transactions and the question the relevant. Stakeholders the merchant before us today is between two of our country's national wireless providers T mobile and sprint these companies have acted as disrupters competitors and low cost options in the wireless. Marketplace. T Mobile's ankerium strategy has ended anti consumer practices such as data caps restrictive. Concrete contracts and much more. They have also worked hard to build a robust national network that by some accounts is the fastest in the nation. For its part sprint has been a leader. And roaming agreements for rural providers and wholesale access for prepaid and lifeline providers. Sprint has worked. Hard to bring its networks that within one percent of rises in terms of network reliability. Or so their commercial say-so consumers have also benefited from sprint positioning itself. As the best value. They are offering a plan right now where new customers can get a year of free service when they switched from another carrier, which sounds amazing. However, this hearing isn't about the benefits that both of your companies have brought to the market. It's about the extrordinary impact that you're combined company could have on the public and the marketplace if this merger goes through we will hear today from the Communication Workers of America from the world wireless association and public knowledge they claim that this merger will have. Negative impacts on low. Income consumers rural providers and jobs in the wireless industry. CWA's testimony suggests that this merger will result in up to thirty thousand job losses in the industry and a reduction in industry pay by as much as three thousand dollars for employee the rural broadbands associations testimony argues that rule consumers will pay more. They claim that sprint charges twenty times less than T mobile or other national carriers for roaming agreements, these agreements allow customers of rural carriers who build their own networks in the most rural communities they use their phones throughout the country. What guarantees rural providers have that they won't face increased cost if t mobile doesn't adopt sprints practices and public knowledge is testimony states that consumer prices will go up due to the reduction in the number of national carriers from four to three they argue that the merger. Would hit low income consumers the hardest because the number of carriers offering wholesale access would drop from three to sprint AT, and T and T mobile so access to their networks to prepaid and lifeline providers who then sell that service under their own brands what remedy to these carriers or their customers. Have if the not mobile decides it wants to get out of the wholesale business or drastically raise rates to that end the FCC found in their communications. Marketplace report that the wireless market concentration was currently at thirty one hundred h h h h I'm measures how competitive market is with a higher number. Meaning it's less competitive. The Justice Department's horizontal merger guidelines state that a market with an h H I above twenty five hundred is highly concentrated, so we really aren't starting from a great spot an increase of. Two hundred points would raise significant concerns about competition. This merger is expected to result in a market power increase of two hundred eighty points for the post played market and two thousand fourteen points for the prepaid market that would take the prepaid market from where it is right now at twenty four sixty seven which is just under the OJ's threshold to forty four eighty one a level that raises lots of red flags these kinds of numbers have historically resulted in higher prices for consumers less competition unless innovation I appreciate both executive statement that they believe that this merger will benefit consumers and result in lower prices and their commitments to an accelerated deployment of five G and the promises of expanded rural broadband, these are national objectives that are important to me and many members of this committee. However, I've seen a lot of mergers in this. Industry and others. And it's hard to think a one where consolidation didn't result in people losing their jobs prices going up and innovation being slightly. I look forward to hearing from the testimony from our two telephone companies that wish to merge in from the other panelists and with that. I yield to the ranking Member Mr ladder for five minutes favors chairman if I could just take a point of personal privilege also to express, my deepest sympathies to our friend and colleague, Debbie Dingle on the loss of chairman Dingell. And the chairman love this committee in this room is named after and I had the privilege of getting to know him in my days now. On this committee grind, I got congress. Again, he loved this committee. He loved this house. But most of all he loves his district state of Michigan in all that he did fourth. So with that. I wish the Bengals my my deepest sympathies on the loss of chairman. And again, this Sharon, thank you very much for convening. Our panel of us today into our witnesses. Thanks for much for being we appreciate your time. I look forward to hearing your expertise in different perspectives
