"And then Caruso can do quite a bit of running of the offense. It's more that defense than I worry about for them, especially on the perimeter. That's kind of tough. And demar Derozan recently called out the team for not playing well. I mean, he's taken on that leadership role on the team. Can that be kind of the catalyst that they need moving forward here? Or is this without Lonzo? Is it just the bull's chances are simply not as good or is this something where you can in the aggregate by getting a couple of guys to step up? Maybe make up for that, particularly if you've got guys like Derozan that are speaking up and kind of calling out his teammates. Yeah, I think if you're demar Derozan what you're looking at is they've been awful for really about two months now. They've really fallen down in the standings as we talked about before. They're in 5th, but they're now two and a half behind both Boston and Philadelphia. That's a lie you're starting to say, all right, well, are we going to be able to catch those teams, especially with how well those teams are playing? And then you've got, you're looking at the other side of it. There are only two games up on Toronto for the playing spot. So that becomes a whole question that boy, you know, could they be down in the play in mix? And we've talked about it. You don't want to be there, especially on the nets are probably lurking down in that playoff spot. And then I just to go back to it..

"Is a wild thing I'm about to say rather. So be careful. I think this is what this is what I would have wanted to see. The evolution of games that I would have wanted to see if Kobe and Shaq would have stayed. Stayed together. And hear me out because I know you're looking at me wild. I would have loved to see a 30 year old Kobe play with a 30 something, like a prime shack because COBE was still in the midst of it was a young guy. I didn't want it his own team. We already know the story of that, right? And he wasn't as and we can both agree on this because you play with the most of his career. Kobe was not as mature of an offensive player as he was later in his career. That's no knock on Kobe that's more of just the fact that, hey, he just got better with time. And he just do more about the game, right? I love right now seeing James Harden in his 30s, playing against with the Joel embiid because and at this stage of his career because he gets to have, he's more mature of an offensive player because he's had those, he's had the my team, I want my team era of his career already. He's already had it. He's already had that in Houston. It didn't work out and didn't work out in Brooklyn, but you could see the way he bro, I just saw a small sample size, they played against the Knicks but I only watched the game against Minnesota. I just see a pep in his step right now that if he keeps this, the sixers are dangerous bro they're dangerous. Yeah, I think it's a good point on Kobe and Shaq. You're talking about points of career of conversation. I talk about this all the time when you put players together, especially really, really good young players. They're not ready at that point to kind of give up part of themselves for the greater good. Everyone's trying to establish who they are, trying to be the face of the league. You hear guys say all the time I want to be the best to ever do it. Most of them feel like they have a shot at that. And so that's the quest early in the career. And then the winning, you know, kind of you mature into that. So I can agree to, you know, it would have been interesting to see if Kobe and Shaq had played together later in the career. I think Kobe and James two completely different styles of play though, so like Kobe was just a pick and roller to death. I didn't mean it. I meant more of so just the maturation of an offensive game. No, and I agree. I agree. I was just kind of picking at the bone there. But I do think the question for me was only what James Harden was going to show up in Philly. That was it. You know, I talked about it being a win win. I still think it will be. I hope Ben Simmons proves me right, but from Philly standpoint, if you got a motivated James Harden, and I couldn't understand why he wouldn't be, but you had to question it. You had to. You have to be silly if you didn't. So but as a motivated player coming out looking refreshed the way he does, the chemistry being seamless or so it would appear, I do think they are very, very, very dangerous. Now they got to get more out of the bias. They got to figure out how he fits into that equation. You've got one of the best defenders in the league and. A maxi is a good piece. They've got really good pieces. You're going to have to figure out how you get something out of Paul Millsap who you also got in a deal. Obviously very limited, like at this point, but still you need production from those dudes in playoff series, right? You have to figure out around the edges, and this is where Doc Rivers comes into play. This is where docs got to earn his check. You got to get the most out of some of those other dudes because that duo of James Harden and Joel embiid, James Harden's never played with anyone. As good as Joel embiid. This is what we wanted to see at James Harden, Dwight Howard, all those years back. Correct. Now, I want to be clear, like Kevin Durant, when he played with Kevin Durant, James wasn't Kevin Durant, obviously, is Kevin Durant, but James Harden wasn't James Harden at that time. While he's been at the height of his superpowers, it's the best player he's ever played with. And the same with Joel. So man, that pairing is fantastic. Doc's gonna earn that check. He's gotta put them boys around them in positions to supplement what they do. And there is dangerous as anybody. I can't wait to see what happens, man. I'm really excited for this back stretch of the season. Just that we can answer all these questions, man. It's a lot going on. But say a quick break, we're gonna talk about Franklin saint. Another into the break. Let's get it. And we are back. Listen, roger, you know we couldn't get out of here without talking about snowfall. All right. We got a link. Franklin season 5. We're back in a bag. All right. I got some quick hitters for you. I've got some questions. If you guys didn't watch the first two seasons of season 5, you know what? Just take these spoilers because it's your fault. Come keep listening. All right? I got some rapid fire for you, Raja. Now, we are in the season where everything is coming to a head. It seems like that for every season, but specifically this one, we are in the late 80s, Lynn bias is just died. Biased. Lynn bias has died of a cocaine overdose, right? And we are back in a bag. We are here, everything is closing in. Franklin is trying to leave the game allegedly. I don't believe he's leaving the game. We got Reed is back somehow. It's just a lot going on right here. I'm just going to give you some rapid fire. We'll go. That boy, that boy said, don't call me Reed. You ain't got to call me Reed. It's daddy. It's teddy. What does mama call him? What does this mean? The Lead
"demar derozan" Discussed on The Lead
"Before this weekend's all star break, demar Derozan had helped lead the Chicago Bulls to a 38 and 21 record tied for best in the east. And last week, just a few days before playing in his 5th All-Star Game. Derozan broke a record that was set by Wilt Chamberlain. Again for the rose in. He scored 35 points while shooting over 50% from the field in 7 straight games. So in honor of all this, we're replaying an episode today that first aired back in November early in the NBA season when Derozan had already started heating up. Tiff talked to the athletic Darnell mayberry about what's been behind Derozan's resurgence and why it's coming at exactly the right time for Chicago fans. Okay, here's the episode. So Darnell, the bulls have not been doing much winning in recent years. In fact, it's been 5 years since they even had a 500 record, but as we sit down to talk with you, they are 6 and one with the best record in the NBA heading into Tuesday night. So does the city of Chicago have any idea what to do with itself right now? No, they're overjoyed. And it's funny because the bulls are doing this at the perfect time. The cubs blew it up. The White Sox flamed out of the playoffs. The bears have a lot of excitement with Justin Fields, but they're not doing well. The Blackhawks are messed right now and mired in controversy. So the bulls have come onto the scene at the right time at the perfect time in terms of local sports and they have an opportunity to really have this city wrapped their arms around them. Well, things are good, but things are also a bit dramatic. Like on Monday, win number 6 was pretty dramatic for the bulls. And one of their big additions this year demar Derozan was right in the middle of it. Can you tell us about what Derozan did and how the bulls pulled it off down the stretch over the Celtics? The Mars been fantastic in his first 7 games with the bulls. And that Celtics game really showed everything that he's brought to this team when Zach lavine was struggling early and couldn't make a shot. I think he had four points on one of 6 shooting at halftime. Demar Derozan was the guy who came up and stepped up big for this team to keep them in it when the Celtics looked to run away with the game. And so the bulls got down 19 points late in the third quarter. The speed to the rib is scored another one back back field goals. For the 9 year veteran not of Germany. He just didn't think that the bulls after being down so much and being on the road in a hostile playing environment of garden in Boston would have a chance to come back, but they closed the game on a 51 to 18 run over the last 14 and a half minutes. Another 30 point effort from demar Derozan and back to back games and it's a two point close lead. 51, 18. I mean, that's almost unheard of. Especially on the road against a star studded team with Jayson Tatum and jaylen Brown. And so you didn't expect them to come back, but defense really did it. And, you know, from there, demar Derozan as we were talking about came in, Zach lavine found the hot hand and they were able to close out the game and really run away wig. And the bulls win one 28 to one 14 and they are 6 and one for the first time since 2012. Well, demar Derozan scored 37 in that win over the Celtics. Can you give us some details on actually how good Derozan has been so far this year for the bulls? Yeah, he's been incredible, and he's really silenced the critics. He's averaged right around 26.6 rebounds and four assists. He's 5th in the league in fourth quarter scoring at 7.1 points per game, and he's been efficient. You know, everyone wanted to knock him when the bull signed them for not shooting threes. He made three or four threes against the Celtics the other night. So he's really starting to embrace the modern game a little bit more, not all the way, 'cause he's still loves old school, 80s, 90s, throwback, basketball, where he gets to the mid range area and pulls up for his patented mid range jumper or gets all the way to the rim to score at the basket or get filed and get to the free throw line, but he is incorporating a little bit more of the modern era so he can round out his game and do what his team needs him to do. Well, I think Chicago fans really like that 80s 90s ball too. So it makes sense, but we want to look at why this marriage is working so well between demar Derozan and the bulls. So first, going back to this off season. Why did Chicago want a guy who's 32 years old in his 13th season and really in the final act of his career? What did they see in Derozan? A lot. I mean, he's a four time all star. He's an Olympic gold medalist. You know, he's been deep into the playoffs with the Toronto Raptors. He's played for some excellent coaches. He's got a winning pedigree and he just knows how to play. I mean, I mentioned the stats. He's one of the most lethal scorers in the NBA. And he also helped Zach lavine. I mean, that is a huge component to all of this. Zach lavine was a one man show for his first four seasons in Chicago. They finally went out and got him some help. First with the Nikola vucevic trade with Orlando last year at the trade deadline and he came in and really helped, but they flamed out and they didn't make the play in tournament, so it was a massive failure for what the team tried to do last season, but now demar Derozan comes Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso. And they just felt like if you surrounded Zach lavine with high quality players, high caliber players, that this team could take off. So he's had this really successful career, but he was talking recently about his reasons for coming to Chicago and it sounds like this guy is still trying to prove something. That was part of the reason why he chose to come to Chicago with everyone was eager to want to be successful when a win, everybody had that chip on that shoulder. Is it fair to say that he's also coming to Chicago with a chip on his shoulder? Yeah, so he'll be the first to admit that. He's had a lot of success, so I don't quite get what the chip is at this point in his career. There was a lot of chatter nationwide when he signed with the bulls. It was a sign and trade with San Antonio and the bulls gave up a lot for him. They gave up a first round pick, they gave up a future second round pick. They gave up thaddeus young, who was a pivotal player for this team the last two seasons, and then they also gave him the enormous contract. I mean, it could be up to 85 million with incentives. So it was a pretty penny that the bulls paid to get demar Derozan here and a lot of people thought because he's 32 because he's played 12 seasons because he's no longer that number one option of that he wasn't Toronto. And that, again, he doesn't take a lot of three pointers. I mean, in this analytic age, everyone's looking at numbers, crunching numbers and saying, how much value do these players have, but when you look at what he's doing on the court, you can throw out all of the advanced analytics. This guy has won the bulls multiple games in the first 7 already. So as we've established, demar Derozan is kind of old for the NBA, because if 32 is old, then I am clearly ancient. And his younger teammates definitely make him feel old..

"Beaters are threes. Yeah, I didn't know he could do that to be perfectly blunt with you bed. I didn't think that he had those shots in his game. The shots that I knew he had are the mid range jumpers and we had Kirk goldsbury on this podcast, pretty recently to talk about Kevin Durant and how Kevin Durant has become this master of the mid range. His mid range jumpers are more valuable in terms of shot efficiency than most players three pointers because of his skill at that shot, but the martyr Rosen. I mean, he might be the king in his own way. This is his thing. It's just a story of damar's career, right? Like what looks like a bad shot for most players. He's just not actually a bad shot for him. You know, he's been so good at getting to exactly what spot he wants and taking exactly what shot he wants and really like Kevin Durant. The defender doesn't feel like it matters a whole lot. You know, he's shooting about as frequently as he did from that bit range area like he did in Toronto, but in 2016, 17, one of the last times that he took as many mid range field goals, he was shooting 41% on those looks. Back in 2016, 2017. This season, that's up to 47%. And that's on pace for the highest average of his career. We should add jubal that the barter rose is he's not doing this alone. Like when I watch this team, they play like they've been playing together for years. So as the beat writer, the guy watching this team night in night out in person, what are you seeing? What's impressive about how they've been doing this? I think so many guys are just in the right role, right? Like demar and Zach are able to lead the offense and lead their respective units and really everything runs through those guys. On the other end of the floor, you've got Lonzo in Caruso. And they just make life hell. They're so good. The call of YouTube has got out to a slow start, but his last ten games or so, he's been an automatic double double 17 and ten guy. They just have a rotation in a team right now that all knows exactly how to play off each other. How does demar himself given all of this? How does he feel about the prospects of his team being able to compete with, say, Milwaukee, Brooklyn, like the conventional favorites in the Eastern Conference down the stretch? I think the fact that this team came in and just gelled so quickly so instantly and find themselves on top of the conference. I think that kind of has him looking even further, right? He's not been to Eastern Conference Finals in years. And I think that he really looks at this as a chance to say if we get the right health, the right luck, the right timing, he thinks his team has got a chance to get to the finals and that's the one thing that he hasn't done in his career. What's the feeling on his team, man? Consider where y'all are now at this point. I believe championship man. If we healthy, we got the capability.

So Jamal, when we talk about the chemistry experiment here in Chicago, it's important to remember that this wasn't obvious. None of this was obvious. I didn't think it was going to go this well. And part of it is because they have this star who is a ball dominant guy in Zach lavine and all star slam dunk contest championship. What is his relationship like with demar Derozan? What was Zach lavine's reaction when demar decided to come to his team? So Zach is in Tokyo for the Olympics for playing for Team USA when this goes down in free agency. But his reaction is just Alicia. I mean, Zach, once he gets back to the states, both him and tomorrow live in Southern California. Zach takes a couple of days off, but he drives down to meet damar in person. They work out together probably about two and a half hours a long workout, and then they just kind of sit down and talk. And I think one of the things that works for these two dudes, they're very similar, very low key, low maintenance, chill dudes, and there's not a huge ego. Zack has really come into his own over the past few years in Chicago and really emerged as an all star and people have seen the talent. The team keeps losing. And Zach now really feels like I've got a teammate that's got my back. And it's been reflected on the court. These guys are 7th and 8th in the NBA in scoring. They allow each other to play off each other when one guy is hot. They don't mind deferring. I've been the only guys that were not surprised by how well this worked. It's the two of them. After that first meeting, when they're about to leave, damar remembers any of that conversation and telling Zack. I told him, don't worry about anything. This shit gonna work. That's it. That was it. You know what I mean? That's how we ended one conversation. We never talked about how we gonna make it working in. I just said, you won't work. This shit is gonna work. So the way in which this has worked, the dramatic fashion in which this worked jabal. The end of these bulls games. It's remarkable, right? Because these are the two guys who conceivably would want the ball. Both of them would want it. But who has been taking the crunch time shots for the Chicago Bulls? Demar has been the guy that has stepped forward and really led the board. They just trust him in the fourth quarter because of the calmness because of his experience in those kind of moments. He leaves the NBA in total fourth quarter points. Zach lavine is 5th the last teammate Pablo, by the way to lead to be top 5 in scoring in the fourth quarter. Not any of the obvious ones that you might think over the past few years. Kevin Garnett and Sam cassell for those old Timberwolves teams a million years ago. But jabal, there is a similarity here, right? Because when I think of demar Derozan this season now, I think of a guy with enormous cojones, which is also like Sam cassell's whole deal, right? Like describe how clutch damar has been late in these games. Look at those two buzzer beaters right. The first player in NBA history to hit buzzer beaters on back to back days. So the first night in Indiana, demar's walking the ball at the core with about 9 seconds to go and you know, he's getting his scream from buchevich, he's not exactly aware of how much time is on the clock. And thought he had a little bit more time to run another play. All of a sudden he looks up does not have enough time. He has to sort of let go of this one legged heave toward the basket. And that shot goes in. Throws it. Derozan delivers. And then the next night in D.C.. DeMarcus the ball, three seconds on the clock. Dribbles into the corner, he has the presence to pump fake because he knows he has a rookie guarding him that'll probably bite on his pump fake. He has another man that is jumping at him and he's able to just uncork a shot. Pay attention to make sure he's got his foot not on the line, not out of bounds. And hit another game winner. Derozan..

"Jamal, demar Derozan has always seemed sort of quiet. I'm wondering if he shared with you any memories, personal memories that he had of his dad. Yeah, Frank Derozan was a tough man. Demar says the only person that he was ever actually terrified of. But he really puts some lessons in partisan lessons in his son that still stick to him to this day. One of the favorite stories that demar told is this time that they're playing one O one, and remind you to Mars like ten years old at this time and his father is a big dude used to play football in Frank, accidentally his bus his younger son's lip. I remember I got so upset. He was like, nah, you lost already. You know, he was like, no, you lost already. He just wasn't. He wouldn't let me score after that. He was just put me through it to where I got to a point to where I just like on some he got game type of stuff. I kicked the ball over the 5th and said, man, I wanna play the war. And I got in the car and cried all the way to he got home talking to my mama. But he thought it was so amusing and a sense of you lost already because you crying but it's part of the game, but I'm not knowing it's a whole psychological approach that he was taking and was trying to show me of, you know, keep your calm, keep your code. This happens in sports. Looking back on that story, his dad tried to impart on him. This is going to happen. You know, it's the old ad, is that everybody's got a plan until you get hit in the mouth and psychologically had already lost in the sort of thrown off his game by this. And I think that one of the things that his teammates and people give to Mark credit for is just how calm and relaxed and control D as under pressure. And at big moments like that, taught him, you can't let anybody throw you off your game. Things are going to happen on the court that you are ready for, and you've got to be able to handle it. What you mentioned, the martyr rose in psychology, one of the things I do know about damar is that he has spoken about his mental health about his battles with depression, even before the passing of his dad. How did his father's death affect him in that way? I think even in the almost year now, since it happened, there are still learning how to process and grab it with it. Grief is just so not exact and everybody deals with it and it comes in fits and stars. I'd be lying to you if I didn't say I had days I had moments where I was like, damn is this ever gonna get back to some type of piece where I lean on sports and sports was always that one thing I can lean on and you know kind of feel my relief. You know, his dad used to come to every home game. Back when he's in Toronto, they talk on the phone pretty much after every game or every major decision that damar had to make. So I think that before the season, something that really helped.

"You really came into his own in Toronto. Making the all star team spending years knocking on the door of the finals. Only to kind of get repeatedly bullied by LeBron James teams. Demar Derozan was nowhere to be found. Ultimately they had to succumb to the greatness of LeBron James. Then he gets straight to the San Antonio. Toronto is finalizing a deal with San Antonio to acquire Kawhi Leonard, the margin Rosen would go from Toronto to the spurs, why is going the other way? And he's playing in the aftermath of this spurs dynasty and I think a lot of people that I talk to for the story mentioned like maybe nobody was really watching damar in San Antonio. Yeah. Because he really starts to make some leaps and changes to his games. Great awareness there from demar. Some of them are subtle. He's still the same mid range scorer that we know and have seen on the stage for a long time. But really a lot of them make his game flourish into the player that he's been for the bulls this season. So marvelous. That was sweet. You mentioned before Jamal that damar is now getting legitimate MVP chance at the united center. Let the chance tell the story. And he's leading all guards in the Eastern Conference in all star voting. He is 32 years old. I mean, he's been in the league for 13 years now. How was his game evolved in that span of time? That time in San Antonio ends up being such an important stop in his career. And it's ironic because he never planned on being there. I didn't want to lead to Ronald. I thought I was going to be there for life. So you smashed me away from that and put me in something that I never even would have thought I would have been in. So now it's like, nah, you hear, you have no truth but to figure it out. He gets there to the spurs and right away Greg Popovich just challenges him. Demar tells the story of the one of the early on in shoot around through his first season with zen Antonio, pop announces to the team before they take the court and shoot around. Tomorrow's running point. And you can just see the confused look on damar's face. Demar is a score. Demar has been a 20 points of game score every year since 2013. And all of a sudden he's been asked to do something out of his comfort zone. I never forget we was a shoot around and he'd let it be known. Demur is the point guard. And it's like, you know what I mean? Now you gotta understand how everybody on your team. They capabilities, they experience their weaknesses and how I can help them. For him, rather than sort of pout about being the situation that he didn't want to be in, out of a respect for popovic his Hall of Fame coach, she was sort of presenting him with these challenges. He took it head on. You can't make careless passage. You can't just dribble dribble dribble. You gotta be efficient with everything you do. Every dribble gotta be efficient. Every drive, every screen or road, everything gotta be approached from a fishing standpoint. And it really made him a more complete basketball player in Toronto. You know, his mindset was score score score. I mean, he even says, I would shoot 30 times if I needed to if I thought this will be needed to win. That was his mentality. Now he had to learn how to read the game completely. And just really be more intentional about everything he does on the floor. One of the things that he said was just like, you could mess around with the piano. You could mess around with the piano. You play the piano long enough, you gonna get better at it. You know what I mean? You gonna understand certain keys a little bit better. That's how I look at my game, and that's how I always want to approach my game to where as long as I play. I want to continue to get better. That's something that he learned from Kobe Bryant. You know that as long as every year you play in the league, try to just get better at one thing and prove that one thing this season, and it might be passing, it may be free throw shooting, it may be passing out of a double team, whatever it is. And then by the end of your career, 13 years in, now you've gotten better at X amount of things. And I think that that that's been a thing to stop with demar here this entire time. So demar Derozan this all star who has gone from a guy who we know as like a volume shooter specializing in like the mid range stuff, he's turned into a guy who can play point guard some in San Antonio and while all of that is happening as you chronicle it for us, his personal life is undergoing its own pretty dramatic evolution. What happened? It was really a tough past few years for him. He was super close to his father, Frank, and all three years while damar was in San Antonio. Frank is battling many long-term illnesses. The time in between games, practice is really whenever he got a spare moment. He would fly back to Los Angeles just to be with his father, as much as possible. The San Antonio, in between games, I would fly home and I tried to enjoy as much as I could with him. You know what I mean? You couldn't come again. You know, and every opportunity I felt like I could get, you know, I just wanted to sit by him. It was times. I just flew home. He didn't know how I was there, I just sit next to his bed for hours. Demar was so, so grateful to the spurs for allowing him that grace, papa bitch never put any pressure on him, let him come and go as he pleased me. Popovich kind of urged him. Just go, just go. And, you know, demar, I think, in this for the way his personality is, he never wanted to let himself become a distraction. He never wanted to miss a game or let his absence take away from anything on his teammates. So he would fly back in play. The emotional toll tonight you gotta hop on a plane again by yourself and fly and playing a game. You know, two, three hours of sleep, you know what I mean? I was doing, I was doing that so frequent. And that was pretty much going on the entire time. He's in San Antonio. Up until his father passed away last February..

"How to play with that grace on his hand. And we're saying that, and some of his shooting percentages. And then the other name that I would throw in there is Kobe white. Here he is in his third season. He was a 7th overall pick a couple of years ago. The starting point guard for the bulk of last season, he's been replaced as the starter by Lonzo Ball, but Kobe white is really needed. He's recovering from off season shoulder surgery to repair torn labrum. So he's going to be out at least through the end of November. So they're dealing with some major injuries. And it's a key player. So they have to stay healthy, that's been on Achilles heel for this team. This franchise for the last decade going back to Derrick Rose's massive injuries. So to lose your fourth overall pick from last year to lose your 7th overall pick from a few seasons ago at the start of the season and to have your all star and leading scorer Zach lavine banged up. It's just not the way you want to start this season, but a 6 in one start kind of mix up for a lot and it makes people feel good. Well, finally, Darnell, these injuries are going to make it a little tough for these next few games because they're just a few games into a stretch of 14 consecutive games against playoff teams from last year. How do you expect demar Derozan and the bulls to handle the stretch that could define just how good they really are? Demar gave a great quote about that when asked about it at the start of this little stretch that they're in. You know, every single night any team is capable of being anybody, you know, it's not like it's the monsters out here that you got to go play against, you know? The NBA. It's not like we're playing the monsters out there. Referencing the classic space jam movie with Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny and those guys. You know, he's right. I mean, and they went out there and proved it. You mentioned the Utah win that they had. They just went out there and really kind of broke the Boston Celtics a little bit and spurred some infighting between the Celtics players after the game. So they're going out there and competing with the league's best. They're missing guys with injuries. They've put together ten new pieces in one off season, which is an enormous off season overhaul. And they're finding a way to get it done. They're battling back from double digit deficits in the second half and finding ways to win games and still competing. So they're taking the challenge head on and you can't help but to be impressed with what they're doing so far early on this season. Maybe they're drinking Michael's secret stuff right now and that's what's going on. What's happening here in Chicago? And it's about time, fans deserve it. They've stuck with this team through picking fan and it's been some pretty lame years. And so now they have something to cheer about. And you can feel the excitement throughout the city. "This league and a lot of wisdom that he can impart on them. Big brother is a good way to put it. It doesn't make you feel as old. Better than them. Better than uncle. But as you wrote, he's apparently not too old to still be evolving as a basketball player. Can you tell us how Derozan's game has changed since he entered the league in 2009? Yeah, it's passing is really evolved. When he started in Toronto, he was just more of a score. And he could take his man and beat his defender one on one, but he couldn't make the pass out of double teams. Now he's inviting double teams to where he wants to date the defense into putting additional attention on him so that he can create another shot for a teammate. Over the last few years, that was my main objective was not to just be labeled as a score. You know what I mean? I want to be a great teammate. Playmaker. And you're seeing that in his assist numbers, I think I wrote in my story that in his first three seasons in Toronto, he had 329 assists, 329 turnovers. Well now, in his last three seasons in San Antonio, he tripled the number of assists that he had compared to turnover. So he's really involved as a playmaker. He's getting everyone else involved, and he's realizing that he doesn't have to be just a score. When you think of this bulls team, Zach lavine is their most exciting player. They also have an all star center in Nikola vujovic and a big free age in addition in Lonzo Ball. But is it fair to say that demar Derozan is the key to holding all of this together? Well, I wouldn't count out Zach lavine. You know, he was the first time all star last year he was an Olympian this summer. He is still a sort of for lack of a better phrase the man on this team. Demar Derozan is okay with that. Both of his unselfish we have no egos. We don't step on that court feeling like we have any sense of entitlement. I should shoot I should this. We got one come and go, and that's a win. And that's what makes their partnership between the two. So beautiful because the mar has been there and done that. He's experienced the individual accolades and success. And now both of them just want to win. And so does vuchevich. So the three of them and this goes back to your question about having a chip on their shoulders. Derozan's been to the playoffs, hasn't had a championship. Vujovic has been to the playoffs had made it past the first round. Levine's never been to the playoffs. So and I throw Billy Bono in the head coach in there as well. He won two national championships in Florida, but, you know, he has not had a ton of deep playoff success in the NBA. So he's also an ultra competitor and wants to win at the highest level. So there's so many people in this organization who want to experience it and just haven't had the chance yet. And this feels like their best opportunity so far now to put together. So what weaknesses do you see for this team behind that 6 and one start? Well, on the court, there are two glaring weaknesses for this team. One is size. They really have a size problem. Nicola vuchevich is the starting center. Tony Bradley is the backup. But beyond them, they don't have a ton of size to contend with teams up front. So that's going to hurt a lot when it comes to rebounding, defending the post things like that. We've already seen that through the first 7 games, the bulls are not a good rebounding team. They'll allow second chance points. They allow paint points. And so they're going to have to overcome that. And the other thing is three point shooting. This isn't a very good three point shooting team. They don't attempt a ton relatively, but they do make a high percentage relatively. So that's going in their favor. But three point shooting and free throw shooting, I would throw in there with the size. Well, along with those weaknesses, the bulls are already dealing with some injuries. You have Patrick Williams, their top draft pick from last year who's out four to 6 months. And Zach lavine has a torn ligament in his left thumb. How concerned are the bulls about these injuries? Yeah, that's the other big question mark right now. I mean, Patrick Williams could be lost for the rest of the season. Maybe he could come back toward the end. Maybe the postseason if they qualify, but he was the fourth overall pick last year. And they were really high on him and felt like he could become a star in time. Missing, perhaps the final 77 games of your second season is not ideal. And it's going to hurt the team. I mean, Patrick Williams is a guy they depend on to contend with some of the better, bigger, stronger, more versatile scores in this league, like Gianna Santa combo, like Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum, who they just saw Monday night. So without him, they're relying on Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso to guard bigger stronger, just more talented players. And they're doing it validly, but they don't have the same measurables as Patrick Williams. So that's a huge loss for them. Zach lavine does not look like himself, Billy Donovan conceded as much a couple of nights ago. I mean, I think he's trying to manage it as best he can. I think sex to kind of guy that when he steps between the lines he's not going to really make a lot of excuses. I don't think he's himself personally. That's just my opinion of seeing him. I think he's trying to figure out.

The Lead

"So Darnell, the bulls have not been doing much winning in recent years. The White Sox flamed out of the playoffs, the bears have a lot of excitement with Justin Fields, but they're not doing well. The Blackhawks are mess right now and mired in controversy. So the bulls have come onto the scene at the right time at the perfect time in terms of local sports and they have an opportunity to really have the city wrapped their arms around them. Things are good, but things are also but dramatic. Like on Monday, win number 6 was pretty dramatic for the bulls. And one of their big additions this year, demar Derozan was right in the middle of it. Can you tell us about what Derozan did and how the bulls pulled it off down the stretch over the Celtics? The Mars been fantastic in his first 7 games with the bulls. And that Celtics game really showed everything that he's brought to this team when Zach lavine was struggling early and could make a shot. I think he had four points on one of 6 shooting at halftime. Demar Derozan was the guy who came up and stepped up big for this team to keep them in it when the Celtics looked to run away with the game. And so the boys got down 19 points late in the third quarter. The score another one back wheel goes for the 9 year veteran out of Germany. He just didn't think that the bulls after being down so much and being on the road in a hostile playing environment is heating garden in Boston would have a chance to come back, but they closed the game on a 51 to 18 run over the last 14 and a half months much of it Derozan steps into Harper. Another 30 point effort from demar Derozan and back to back games and it's a two point goals lead. 51 to 18. I mean, that's almost unheard of, especially on the road against a star stud team with Jayson Tatum and jaylen Brown. And so you didn't expect them to come back, but defense really did it. And, you know, from there, demar Derozan, as we were talking about, came in, Zach lavine found the hot hand and they were able to close out the game and really run away wig and the bulls win one 28 to one 14 and they are 6 and one for the first time since 2012. Well, demar Derozan scored 37 in that win over the Celtics. Can you give us some details on actually how good Derozan has been so far this year for the bulls? Yeah, he's been incredible. And he's really silenced the critics. He's averaged right around 26.6 rebounds and four assists. He's 5th in the league in fourth quarter scoring at 7.1 points per game. And he's been efficient. You know, everyone wanted to knock him when the bull signed them for not shooting threes. He made three or four threes against the Celtics the other night. So he's really starting to embrace the modern game a little bit more, not all the way 'cause he's still loves old school 80s, 90s throwback basketball where he gets to the mid range area and pulls up for his patented mid range jumper or gets all the way to the rim to score at the basket or get filed and get to the free throw line. But he is incorporating a little bit more of the modern era so he can round out his game and do what his team needs him to do. Well, I think Chicago fans really like that 80s 90s ball too. So it makes sense. But we want to look at why this marriage is working so well between demar Derozan and the bulls. I mean, I mentioned his stats. He's one of the most lethal scorers in the NBA. And he also helped Zach lavine. I mean, that is a huge component to all of this. Zach lavine was a one man show for his first four seasons in Chicago. They finally went out and got him some help. First with the Nicola vuchevich trade with Orlando last year at the trade deadline, and he came in and really helped, but they flamed out. They didn't make the play internment. So it was a massive failure for what the team tried to do last season, but now demar Derozan comes, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso. And they just felt like if you surrounded Zach lavine with high quality players, high caliber players that this team could take off. So he's had this really successful career, but he was talking recently about his reasons for coming to Chicago. And it sounds like this guy is still trying to prove something. That was part of the reason why I even chose to come to Chicago was everyone was eager to want to be successful on a win. Everybody had that chip on that shoulder. Is it fair to say that he's also coming to Chicago with a chip on his shoulder? Yeah, so he would be the first to admit that. He's had a lot of success. So I don't quite get with the chip is at this point in his career. There was a lot of chatter, a nationwide when he signed with the bulls. It was a sign in trade with San Antonio and the bulls gave up a lot for him. They gave up a first round pick. They gave up a future second round pick. They gave up thaddeus young, who was a pivotal player for this team the last two seasons. And then they also gave him the enormous contract. I mean, could be up to 85 million with incentives. So it was a pretty penny that the bulls paid to get demar Derozan here and a lot of people thought because he's 32 because he's played 12 seasons because he's no longer that number one option that he wasn't Toronto. And that, again, he doesn't take a lot of three pointers. I mean, in this analytic age, everyone's looking at numbers, crunching numbers and saying, how much value do these players have, but when you look at what he's doing on the court, you can throw out all of the advanced analytics. This guy has won the bull's multiple games in the first 7 already. So as we've established, demar Derozan is kind of old for the NBA, because if 32 is old, then I am clearly ancient. And his younger teammates definitely make him feel old. Can you tell us what he said about that recently? Yeah, he said, he doesn't feel like he's played 12 seasons in the league, and this is his 13th. He only feels old, quote unquote, when the kids on the team, his teammates, his younger teammates put on some of the music that they're listening to these days. That was one of the instances and the other time is when it's story time. You know, when he's telling stories about things that happen, he feels like it happened. Just, you know, not too long ago. He realized that some of his teammates were three, four, 5 years old at the time. So it was just funny because, you know, as we all age, we can relate, and as he was saying it, I was thinking, oh, you're only 32. Give it a couple more years. It's only gonna get worse, but yeah, he's taking it all in fun and in stride and Lonzo Ball comically referred to him as the big brother of the team. And damar. At the tender age of 32, is the oldest player on the team. He's the highest paid player on the team, so they look up to him as a big brother. They know that he has a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience in.

The rumor mill, whole mine is already heating up. We had a trade, go down today between the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Orleans Pelicans, which actually included one of the Lakers draft, picks their draft pick next year, and we've got a lot to talk about today. Look, we're going to get into The Playmakers. The Lakers are targeting why they might be doing that. We're going to talk a little bit about DeMar, DeRozan and interview that he gave this morning. It was really interesting. Sure, sounds like he wants to be a Los Angeles. Laker, we'll talk about some different targets for the Lakers, took a look at both on the trade market, the free-agent market and break down what kind of situation the Lakers you're in right now, as you can tell solo, show, just me, but that's always, it's never really just me. It's me and Ed, All of you, so let's get to it. If you are listed the podcast version of this, make sure you review And subscribe over on Apple podcast, Spotify to an instant or wherever you listen to podcasts off. All right. Let's dive into this, see what you guys are talking about, right now. All right, let's let's start with the DeMar DeRozan thing. Let's start with that because that is the probably the biggest thing that's going on right now aside from the Buddy hield stuff which we're going to get into that as well. So tomorrow is it his interview this morning? Was Shannon Sharpe. That was interesting. Very, very interesting in terms of, he made it very clear that he is perfectly willing to take a pay cut and that was her tool number one towards DeMar DeRozan, becoming a Laker, right? Because if he's not if he's not willing to take like he made twenty-seven million dollars his last season if he thinks that he's going to make the same thing next season. Well, first of all, he's probably wrong. I don't think there's a team out there. It's going to give them that, but if money is number one on his priority list, that's a problem for the Lakers. The Lakers are capped out. They don't have much, they can offer them, they can offer. If he's if we're looking just free, agency is the mid-level exception which is just under ten million. That's, that's well, that's a complicating Factor there if he's really looking for a lot of money. There's a lot of other teams that could offer more than that because they have cap space. But.

"The time he was here he was all that was p. Was like a father figure. I honestly pete was he. He brought us in made us feel like like one one his rival in all honesty and he allowed us to be us He just re re related with us on a different level and bring the best out of us. And that's why so. Many kids want to play back. Dan and he did so much force at that point to where when it was time to step on the court you know we. We was walking with every time right. What was one of the things that he taught you. That helped you become the player of the person the man that you became. I mean everything. I mean being around piece so much at a young age you see how it was like the deal with fame money Business He was always a teacher of that. That that aspect of it of looking at it like we we play basketball forever always prepared. I'm the big even even if we didn't wanna hear then it was always said saito was brought up towards the end. I see a lot of things hands on for what him made it easier. He'd be what else one day. Then you you look on tv and taking care of a big deal. Oh damn he just was with us right at practice. Now you see him in light hanno a business as a mobile that he is it. Put a lot of things in perspective and kind of gave us that motivation of of understanding where it was like you tell people all the time. I said it was easy for me to succeed. Because i saw my brother sixteen right. Yeah and i'm like here in the house where i live. He grew up like i grew up. He s he slept. He played college..

"Awesome for him he got the bag did not work out for the celtics But that game was awesome Crap what other ones man like watching dayton's run like you mentioned with dayton ohio state like dayton going to the elite eight because i mean i grew up in ohio so like seeing. Some of that was was wild to me. It was so cool. Because i think it was jordan cyber and Who else was on that. They were smallest. I think their biggest guy that played with six eight and the only ran like seven or eight guys. They were just fun. And i remember who is on the syracuse team. I'm trying to remember who is on the syracuse. See right now. Because they beat syracuse was sweet sixteen they played syracuse day a member. So i mean i could insert throwing names out but like i remember. There was kind of like the johnny. Flynn eric give team. And then you got waited. Like scoop jardine brandon trish and then there was huge fair there for a while and then they're kinda like last run di remember being kind of a fan of was when they be. Uva that made the final four is eleven with tyler light in amount harrison. It was somewhere in between those two. Yeah no yeah. It was somewhere in there. Because i remember the dude from date through the ball office syracuse player with like eight seconds left or something like that to the it didn't save the game kept the syracuse from any possession. But that was awesome. I m georgetown. fan I have no idea. Why sometimes i just love alonzo mourning like so. It's going way way back. And i love roy hibbert so i grew up pastries fan. But like zola's has like it us. One of my favorite favorites to watches game is like so clunky honestly offensively like if you ever just like washed his postgame but i do just because what. I do He was so herky-jerky. But like i feel actually be much better offensively today. 'cause he was year's listed 6-foot-10 but he might have been a little bit smaller height wise. But like just in terms like shear strength ridiculous On the lay was always so clogged for into like just in terms of like his work rate in the shitty. Did defensively a monster. So i love georgetown otto porter in the year when they could have won a national title against fcc you that was like it was very much so like hand in hand like the worst and also the best. Because i mean. I was just watching the highlights again last week. Ripe for march madness started up. Because how can you not love the. Fcc you run like that team was just insane like they did a lot of stuff from bonn beyond the arc lake washington play like. I just had never seen a small school like that with like. I don't think any of the guys made in mba rauscher. Like i think somebody might have made like a something in the summer league. But don't think anybody made an mba roster and they had a couple of guys who played like in europe But their athleticism was just nuts. Like i remember. They had like eleven or twelve dogs just in the georgetown game it was. It was electrifying but also like the worst at the same time because otto porter is just kind of like standing there like well. Shit we're down twenty with with like two minutes ago where the fucking into seat..
