They have enough influence already. And so in this moment in time you have vast territories of of of labs that she is going to be able to to look at and really a provide some redress from what the trump administration has done basically deconstructing any environmental regulations. We had in any protection of public lands that we had you know so significant prior to this you know all males you know in this position and so we're really grateful that the that the new administration has seen the merits of the championship of the environment. "Everybody plays the fool by the main ingredient. This is democracy. Now i mean good men with nermeen today. Climate and racial justice activists are joining unions and newly elected members of congress to call on president elect joe biden to address cova the economy and climate change and appoint a quote corporate free cabinet. Their push comes as biden out. Several new appointments tuesday including louisiana congressman cedric richmond to lead the white house office of public engagement. The sunrise movement described the appointment of richmond as a betrayal because he's the leading democratic recipient of fossil fuel. money congress. this comes as the sunrise. Movement and justice democrats are pushing the biden team to place progressives in key cabinet positions. Their dream team includes barbara lee secretary of state elizabeth. Warren is treasury secretary. Keith ellison is attorney general bernie sanders secretary of labor mustafa ali as epa administrator and deb jalan as secretary of interior for more. We're joined by will lead shaheed spokesperson for justice democrats. It's great to have you back with us. Can you talk about what the response has been to the cabinet and the staff appointments so far begin with cedric richmond. Your concerns i think. Progressives are upset with the appointment of richmond as one of the leading recipients of fossil fuel donations he took money from the corporate packs of exxon chevron. Valero just this past year and he is someone who his own constituents. In new orleans louis- louisiana have said have not taken the issue of regulating the fossil fuel industry toxic pollution from the fossil fuel industry and the climate crisis. Seriously so we are concerned that i represent represented. Richmond has was appointed to the inner circle. Steve was also appointed to the circle. He is a big pharma. Lobbyist has worked for groups who oppose allowing the government to manufacture prescription drugs and impose medicare for all and now going forward. You know we have heard news. That deb holland is being considered for secretary of the interior. I think this might have been leaked in response to the progressive outcry about these two more corporate friendly appointments and looking forward. We really have to keep a tight and scrutiny over this fight for the soul of the biden presidency. Will they appoint all of these corporate friendly insiders or will they appoint significant numbers of progressives who make up. Nearly forty percent of the seats of democrats in the house are members of the progressive caucus. So know we think we deserve adequate representation if joe biden wants to be a unity president and represent the entirety of the democratic coalition and believe on the basis of the appointments made so far. You know there's been a lot of discussion about what you've just mentioned the split within the democratic party between progressives and centrists. How do you think it's going to go. The biden harris administration. Which direction do you see them. Tilting in on the basis of the appointments. They've already made. So the appointment. Of ron clain chief of staff is an interesting one. The other two men and consideration for that one of the most prominent roles in the white house were much more hostile to progressives much more ideologically neoliberal ideologically part of the conservative wing of the democratic party. Namely bruce reid and steve shetty and so appointing clean was a significant sign. He's given statement saying that he understands that the party has become more progressive has gone gone in a progressive direction. Especially over the last four years. And so you know. We have to be optimistic because we want joe biden to deliver on behalf of working families but we also keep a close eye. The good thing is that unlike president obama in two thousand eight there is not much of a honeymoon period. As you can tell our joe biden. I think there will be a lot of scrutiny and oversight in terms of wanting more corporate free appointments to this administration. We hope we'll get some and can you talk about the call bernie sanders to be made labor secretary. Do you see that actually happening. Yeah i think bernie. Sanders would make a great labor secretary. We also we called for three people per position. That we thought would be great bernie. Sanders is obviously one of the most tireless fighters for working families would also be happy to see representative andy levin who is also being considered for that role as well as mary. Kay henry who is the president of the eu and having someone all these departments dedicated to bold action especially if mitch mcconnell controls the republican senate. We need people in executive physicians. Who are going to use the full power of the federal government to move forward and agenda. That actually solves people's problems and doesn't allow mcconnell to rob the american majority from government. Finally the protest sets being held today. What exactly are the demands as people gathered together around the country and your response to Those democrats and the republicans who you know past went from republican to democrat and their vote for president elect biden in saying you must be quiet until the final runoff elections in georgia. Yeah one of the really strange things is to see democrat some conservative democrats. Go on television and say how excited they are to bring forth a new era of bipartisanship of working across the aisle. How they're optimistic. That joe biden and bernie's joe biden. Mitch mcconnell can can strike some deals but if you actually look across the aisle. It's it's it's a scary situation. I mean mitch. Mcconnell has amplified president trump's efforts to orchestrate coup to de-legitimize the biden victory and therefore de-legitimize the next four years of a biden presidency. And that's the majority of republicans in congress are acting that way. And then we have five four for democrats to allow mitch. Mcconnell to rob this majority of governing would be really terrible for all the democrats who poured their heart out for joe biden and then wanted bold action and fundamental shaky. I want to thank you for being with a spokesperson for justice. Democrats goodman with nermeen wear a mask..

The Great Plains Tribal Chairman's Health Board A nonprofit organization that represents eighteen tribal communities in South Dakota North Dakota Nebraska and Iowa began running the Suzanne hospitals operations so they took matters into their own hands to provide healthcare and again we reported on this hospital a few minutes ago. Excuse me and we'll continue to follow up the rest linked to the rest of that article in the show notes. Czar you're just going to say. Do you remember the initial story you're right. Yeah so again comment. No I mean I mean me on time and time again but but of course the deck is stacked against US but Time and time again there are examples those were when we take the bull by the horns We have better results for ourselves. Absolutely and it's it shouldn't have to issue not to be that way you know and the need is great so certainly as an and go ahead. I'm sorry after you. I'm sorry I stepped on. You know I was basically done just just you know what what do we have to do. Aside from getting more allies in Congress like deb Jalan who are working feverishly really by trying to introduce You know pro indigenous language and legislation. Excuse me To get these people to be doing what they were supposed to be doing per treaty and other agreements. Well you know the lack acuff humanity in my opinion is a big part of the problem. These are things that should be automatically afforded people. Well not giving a granted a forty people you know people shouldn't have to fight to get adequate healthcare. They shouldn't have have to fight to get clean water. They shouldn't have to fight to have clean air. You know the these things come from a lack of humanity MHM agreed yeah. That's that's basically what trump it is basic. I'm trying hard not to go. Roman candle not not just just out of the frustration. You know what I'm saying. We why for basic human needs do they insist based on making a suffer in that sense. I know it it. It defies this logic totally. It totally defies logic and the only the only reasons that that keep coming to mind time. Meantime in time again is greed in racism. Those are the two glaring reasons that stick out to me every single time. Okay because if they can't say that racism is a factor because if if it wasn't Then all of these things would be a forty two to us without any kind of hindrance without any kind of reservation without any kind of love. Anything well I think what bothers me. A great deal is the fact that they blame it on budget right. There's disagree and know exactly but but but but they're not even even good lies. Oh they're I'm not. You know what I mean I. It's it's like you know we can't afford you kind of thing. That's that's that's generally what I walk away with and as a matter of you can't afford US matter. Is You have a fiduciary responsibility to US under under federal law right.

"In our lived experience to really add to the conversation as the sole member of the Kansas delegation. That is part of the democratic majority in the house. I definitely think that there are a few things I bring, you know, whether it's the, the voice of the Kansas, third district, or the voice of a. Native woman who has some previous experience and expertise and in federal Indian law and economic and community development in native communities. I think that, you know, the idea of this congress accepting embracing and a lot of times, highlighting some of the work that both Deb Jalan denier doing has been pretty phenomenal. I'm congresswoman David could you tell us a little bit about the third district where exactly is that? What's the demographic like just paint us a basic picture? I'd love to talk about the Kansas third district. So where the Kansas City metro area, we have were on the Kansas side. So Kansas City Kansas, which is in Wyandotte county is its own unique historical place in this country. Wind dot county is one of the full counties that's in the district. The other one is Johnson county which. Which has a lot of suburban suburban parts of the Casey metro area. And then we have a small portion of Miami county where it starts to be a little more rural. And the, the district has you know, I mean I graduated from a community college there, we've got one of the best community colleges in the country, right there. But we've got just this, I'd say strong emphasis on public education, which is, you know, the a huge part of why I've had the opportunities I've had in my life, and I just I was really excited that Kansas got to play a role this year and being part of this history, making class of freshmen members of congress, Lieutenant governor Flanagan. Let me come to you similar questions. First question what have you learned about being a state executive in Minnesota in your first few days in office? Well as a Representative David said, it's it is a steep learning curve. But I think that what I have really learned is the responsibility, the weight of the responsibility. And the overwhelming feeling of being in the room where it happens a think that's the difference that it makes having indigenous women native people at the decision making table. The outcomes that we're able to achieve, I think are more reflective of who lives in the state as a whole and just think we'd get better policy outcomes. When our government accurately represents or more accurately represents the folks who live here. So that has been what has been really powerful for me. Yeah. Would you wrote this, which I you month? Would you expand on that police in terms of who lives in Minnesota because the state, I think? People would be surprised to know is remarkably diverse there's a significant monk population. There is a significant population from from various, you know, countries with a large Muslim population. Talk about the indigenous populations in Minnesota. And what some of their unique needs and concerns are. Absolutely, well, thank you for knowing about the great state of Minnesota, and that we have a really diverse population here, of course, as you mentioned, the monk community. We have a significant Somali population are lat next community is, as large as well, African American and the native population. We've got eleven reservations in the state of Minnesota, as well as a significant urban American Indian population too. And I think, you know, the needs of our communities are, are vast. But it comes down to issues around education, health care. Issues surrounding community prosperity and really the need to ensure..

"This is one A. I'm Joshua Johnson. Native Americans have had voting rights in federal elections for nearly a century, but an indigenous woman had never won a seat in congress until last year that time for people to not be heard and not be seen and not being listened to or represented. Well. Changes now. That was Kansas. Representative cherise David during her victory speech in November in the midterms. She and New Mexico, congresswoman Deb Holland became the first two native American women in congress female tribal citizens broke ground in many state positions as well including Peggy Flanagan who's the new Lieutenant governor of Minnesota. I want every young person in Minnesota tonight to know black white Brown or indigenous that you can grow up, and you can lead this state. But as Flanagan said, on the campaign trail native women are at best invisible. And at worst, disposable indigenous peoples as a whole don't fare much better. But today, we're bringing together native American women who were settling into their new positions of power as part of our special project one, a across America, joining us from the US capital is Kansas representatives, cherise David's. She is a member of the hotel nation congresswoman David's. Welcome to one A. I am happy to be here. Joining us from Minnesota public radio is Minnesota's Lieutenant governor Peggy Flanagan. She's the highest ranking native American woman in a state executive position. And she is a member of the white earth band of Gibb way Lieutenant governor Flanagan. Welcome. Thanks so much for having me. Also with us here in studio is marked trae hint. He's the editor of Indian country today. Mark, thanks for being here. Thanks. Glad to be here congresswoman David's. Let me start with you. How have your first hundred fifty or so days? Ben going, how did your expectation of what congress? Be like compare to reality. Well, I'm not sure I had too much of an expectation except that I knew that we were going to be on a steep learning curve. And so that, that has that expectation has been met for sure, one of the things because of the topic that we're touching on today that I want to mention is that I'm often telling people that I don't know what this experience would be like, if Representative Deb Jalan wasn't also here at the same time that I am both of us coming in as freshmen members of congress, and, you know, making our way through this very long standing institution and figuring out how we can best use our voice.

"Trust responsibility. I'm here to remind the trumpet. Ministration that your mortgage payment is due for more. We go to Washington DC where we're joined by Mark. Trae hunt editor of Indian country today. Member of the shoshoni Bannock tribes Mark describe what's happening as a result of the shutdown to Indian country. It really is a across the country pretty significant devastating impact. And health would be a great one where people are worried about access to medicine access to basic services. The Indian health service is still operating, but folks are not being paid. It's getting harder to refer people outside of the system. What one stat that most people don't know is that sixty percent of the Indian health system is actually run by tribes or nonprofit organizations not the federal government. So to have those organizations have to basically bail out the federal government is really extraordinary talking about the number of federal workers who are native American or the number of native Americans who were federal workers, most of the employees across the board of the Indian health services, the largest employer. In Indian country direct employers over ten thousand people it's interesting we mentioned the coastguard earlier, but they're actually seven uniform branches of the United States and three of those branches the coastguard, the no officers and the public health service are all in different aspects of this shutdown and in many reservation clinics. It's the public health service that has a physicians and dentists and some of the other folks serving a tribal members, and what do you think about the fact that the whole shutdown is based on President Trump wanting to build the wall on the southern border. It really is crazy, especially when you think that it's not a five point seven billion dollar project is just a downpayment. And if this is to go into and it's going to be a much longer term because we're really talking about twenty five or thirty or forty billion dollars. And this dispute is not going to go away unless there's a resolution, and that's why I think it's so important that the conversation get broader than just what it is. We just played that clip from the. The congressional hearing. What difference does it make that we have this? I just this month to native American women for the first time have entered congress, you Deb Jalan from from New Mexico as well as cherise David's from Kansas the significance of this the significance of that was just striking for the first time involving a native community the leadership of the house. Democrats turned to these two native American congresswoman shirts Davidson, Deb, Holland and said, why don't you ask the questions? I is. So it started with a frame of. Here's what India two countries think defined by Indian country, and if you think of the long narrative of this country that is just a shift in many many ways that it's inspiring that part of the story. I think is while this is the way it should have been a long time ago. This is Keri hawk Lazard, executive director of native American lifelines, which offers health services in Baltimore and Boston addressing the hearing on Tuesday. Day, the partial government shutdown having high having dire consequences for American Indian health care including urban and then people in urban Indian health. The federal government has an affirmative obligation to provide healthcare to our people this trust responsibility stems from treaties and long standing US policy. Jurisprudence the shutdown of IHS is directly at odds with that obligation. The impacts of an S shutdown is that already chronically underfunded facilities are forced to make extremely difficult decisions without any other options. Facilities will not be able to provide care to patients. So Mark Trahan final comment on what you feel people need to understand about how this government shutdown in all aspects education food health employment treaty obligations is affecting native America. It's hard to understate. How important the role of the federal government is in a tribal community. And you're already dealing with a very poor community in many cases and have that money stripped out of a community that circulates even not just the payroll, but so many other ways to have that taken away. So suddenly, I mean, one of the things that was striking in chairman payments. Testimony was how poorly planned the shutdown was during last shut shutdown the bourbon in affairs and other agencies started talking to tribes early prepaid a lot of the bills tried to arrange for things. So that there would be a mitigation this time it just happened it happened. So suddenly because it was after Trump, changed course. And that really added to the misery. I think of what's going on. Indian health is a great example because it's already so underfunded is the lowest cost health system in the country and taking resources out of that just makes it worse. Marsh raihan. Thanks so much for being with us editor of Indian country today. Member of shoshoni Bannock tribes, this is democracy. "Yoma people's walk into ranson randomness. I'm lovey your host and wacky wordsmith. And this is my podcast from talking about the things I'm loving things upside eyeing and having great conversation with people who I think are interesting, and I'm here at the recording company bring the radio voice as always on this episode. I'm feeling good about the seats that black people and minority. Progressives won in the midterm elections. I'm ranting about the people who continue to hustle backwards by voting against their interests and spotlighting higher heights organizations that are doing incredible work. My guest on this show is clear psalm IRS of the fashion bomb daily. So let's jump into it. Yosso this week. I'm feeling good about the seats that black folks minority progressives one during this really important midterm elections where we will all biting our nails for the first time ever there. One hundred there over one hundred women with seats in the US house of representatives and a lot of people of color one. Right. So Letitia James. She is now the first black woman who's elected New York state, attorney general Colin Allred won the house seat and unseated an incumbent. He is an ex NFL player and HUD official and Tonio Gado is a Rhodes scholar who focus on universal universal healthcare and emphasize his working class upbringing. He unseated the incumbent in York Rashida to leave and Ilhan, Omar the first Muslim women to be lifted to the US congress your ratios in Michigan Ilhan is minute mini mini. Minnesota. She's also the first Cemalli American elected to congress. We have to HANA Hayes who's a first black woman to be lifted to congress from Connecticut Yana Presley, first black woman to be let's congress from Massachusetts, Alexandra, oh, Cortez is the youngest woman every let's to congress. The first native American women. Let's congress are also here should we David's who's an openly gay native American she defeated Republican combat and flipped the red seat blue. Okay. That is amazing. Deb Jalan replaces a democratic rep shell Luhan Grisham in New Mexico. Lauren Underwood thirty two year old registered nurse unseated. Afford term Republican congressman illinois's fourteenth congressional district. She is a democrat Naperville who was never before been elected to public office, this this huge. Okay. And then y'all this auntie, Maxine. Water's easily won reelection. And she said to take over the house economic oversight committee y'all I need her to come for all of Trump's tax returns. And as of today, which is November seventh at four PM. Stacey Abrams still has not yet conceded that she's lost the governor race in Georgia. That is because it is so close that it might end up being a runoff election. I'm hoping that by the time. You're listening to this podcast that we've r- the runoff election is official and that they see Abrams is governor of Georgia because to be quite honest. If she loses Georgia, it's not because she didn't want a great campaign is because she was cheated. It's because Brian Kemp stole seats. So honestly, Stacey for me is a winner. And even if she does not end up being governor, I'm looking forward to her running this country running something major. So this is not going to be the end for her. Again, the fact that she did not lose in spite of the fact that this guy has been the voter suppression, the efforts that have been thrown at her the fact that the president of the United States has said all this dog whistle about her y'all. I'm feeling good about it. Honestly. So there's a lot of things to celebrate. And also nineteen black women one their judgeships in a Texas county Harris County that huge we are. There's things to feel good about their some wins. We didn't win, you know, Florida because Florida Andrew gillum lost by a very small margin and Biddle aerobic in Texas lost by very small margin. Also, I wish we'd have won that dot have been mazing feel. I wish we could say Stacey Abrams clean and clear is governor of Georgia. But there are things that we walked away with also the fact that Democrats now controlled the house, that's huge. It is one it makes it down much harder for Chitose Satan to be ridiculous..

"And one of the first mostly women elected to congress. Michigan's when she. It's alot more than also noting that in Michigan Rashida Toledo won her race as well. In New Mexico last night, democrat, Deb Jalan became the first or one of the first I should say native American women elected to congress today, we all came together. And we said we still believe in the American dream in American democracy. And in hope, we still believe America stronger, when we work together, we believe diversity and representation make us great. That's New Mexico's Deb how in last night. The other native American woman to win last night was Democrats cherise David's in kansas's third district. So we're brecca tracer. I mean reflect with me on how significant this is you you were talking about that a second ago. But I think we should explore more. How for a longtime Democrats have relied even curried favor with women of color in terms of voters, but didn't necessarily make room for them in the party. In terms of actual politicians or representatives. Are you? Are you seeing that changing now? Well, it should be changing. I think it was the women in the candidates themselves who insisted that it was changing this time. I don't know that the Democratic Party infrastructure that the Democratic Party establishment was particularly keen on a lot of these candidates when they started running a lot of these women weren't taken seriously. You look at somebody like Lauren Underwood in Illinois. She ran in her primary against six white men. She's an African American nurse. I believe she's thirty to a lot of these women are also young we should talk about that. That means that they are the potential future of this party. But Laura and Underwood was certainly an underdog in her Illinois house primary race, and she wound up winning against six white men. And then last night, she won Jerez. In Illinois for a house district, Lucy MC bath. Now her her race in Georgia's sixth district is as as my knowledge at this moment still undecided, but she's in the lead by a few hundred votes. She was not somebody that the party took particularly seriously. She won her primary, and then was in was in a runoff and won her primary. So I don't know that this is indicative right now of the party having newly invested in them. I think it's indicative of the women insisting that they were going to lead the party forward in the aftermath of that two thousand sixteen election, and I hope that the party infrastructure is paying attention and looking to these women for leadership because I believe that they are the future of the party that they must be the future of the party. All right. Well, you mentioned Lauren Underwood. We have some tape from her last night. She unseated four term Republican congressman Randy Holt grin, making her the first woman of color to represent the district her district now just outside of Chicago tonight, November six twenty eighteen I. Stand before you as this communities first congresswoman elect. If that's not standing on the shoulders of giants. I don't know what is together on this night. We made history. History Underwood I should know is a registered nurse and was previously. A senior adviser in the department of health and human services under the Obama administration. And interestingly back in March, I'm seeing here she told A L dot com. She said, I'm thirty one year old black woman. I am doubted in eight of the ten conversations I have. But here's what she says. She's lured you can see it on people's faces if you exceed their expectations, something switches, and they start to respect you. But what that means for her and her team is she has to be excellent every day at everything she does because she's being underestimated and counted out, and she says we need to exceed expectations at all time that all times. That's Lauren Underwood who won her congressional race last night. Will I want to welcome into the conversation on that note, Simone Sanders? He's joining us from Washington. She's a democratic strategist and CNN contributor, Simone Sanders. Welcome to point. Hi. How are you? I'm doing. Well. So so we were just talking about Lauren Underwood and several other women who. One yesterday in will later in the hour. We'll talk about Republican women who won. But tell me about what you see in these female victories for the the future of the Democratic Party. That women led the Democrats victory in the house of representatives, and frankly in governorships and in state legislative races across the country..
