"This is Bloomberg business of sports. The World Cup is coming out stage in 2026. That will bookend just a fantastic growth in sports. So when the World Series certainly helps to have stars. But everyone is looking at these prospects earlier than ever, especially now that you can sign and pay talent in college. When you get into the playoffs, there's nothing better as the player. Re signing guys like Deandre hunter coming off of their rookie deals. Everything starts to become a little bit more expensive. Are thesis is really around how to use sports as that lands to touch those massive adjacent markets. Bloomberg, business of sports. From Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show a week explore the big money issues and the world of sports. I'm Michael Barr. I'm scarlet fu. And I'm Damien Sasha. Today's show, we're talking golf. We're going to bring in the CEO of the USGA Mike one. We'll get his thoughts on the state of the sport as we head into the 2023. I think will's outdoors is probably the next big the next big name if I had to guess. There's also some pretty impressive rookies in kids actually kind of coming right out of school that might rocket there sooner than later. And of course, we need to get his take on some legal issues that's affecting the sport, including the Department of Justice's antitrust probe. That's right, Scarlett and we can't have anyone in golf on without asking them first about Liv golf. So we'll get into that with him too. All that is straight ahead on the Bloomberg business of sports. But first, we're going to dive into a conversation on sports and tech. The fan experience at ballparks and stadium is a lot different from the way it was years ago, starting with a scoreboard here to talk about some of those innovations as Harry patz. He's general manager of the display division at Samsung, Harry, welcome to the Bloomberg business of sports. Thank you so much, it's crazy to be here. Now tell me how this has been the marriage here for Samsung electronics and the fan experience. It's funny. Samsung's been a digital signage leader. Most people don't think about it. They just see a TV, but if you walk in a store, a train station and airport chances are you see a Samsung screen, a bar restaurant, while socially acquired a company called prison view a few years back, and that kind of got us into the sports business. And we've won a few interesting properties over the past few years, National Football League, NBA, and more recently Major League Baseball. And it's not just the screen, which I'm happy to tell you about how great they are, but it's really about that fan experience. I'm also up to remember when you went to a baseball game, you ordered a hot dog, you said you see and that was it. It's a totally different modality for today's fans and we're hopefully in some ways helping these sports properties really monetize and provide that wonderful fair experience for the next generation of fans. So these partnerships that you've struck with the different leagues, they'll really come into fruition in the years to come. Can you give us a sense of what that fan experience will look like? How will fans experience a Samsung display in their seats at the ballpark? Even at home. So it's interesting, right? Last year, we did our first immediately baseball deal with the New York myths here in New York. And the first phase of that was getting the ribbon boards around the stadium, but also putting 300 LCD screens. Think of those as TDs, but they're actually professional displays around the concourse. And of course, 12,000 ft² of our AED product. What does that mean? Well, it's not just the scoreboards and the limited voice that you see. But it also is anything concerned. When you walk in there, Jackie Robinson returned to obsidian field. Their size that is sort of welcoming you. In the past you would have seen a static line of card Jeff O'Neill bad executive. Jeff McNeil bading second. And now you see a dynamic LED card changing. So it's a whole more sort of immersive environment. And of course, there's so much to tell you where to go. And soon, it will be time to tell you the optimal sausage July is over here. The optimal total line is there. It's a whole sort of immersive experience to save you time and to really help direct you where to go. And to make it much more fun. Harry, if you're telling me that I don't have to wait in line for a steak sandwich at lebels at Yankee Stadium, I mean, I'm all in, but here's what my question is. You mentioned CD field. We know SoFi Stadium, you know, they've got 2500 Wi-Fi 6 access points. You know, these are modern current newly built stadiums. Talk to me about all those arenas out there that are somewhat antiquated. How does Samsung help them get up to snuff? I mean, it's not just easy. I mean, look, I know that any flat space, any wall as a canvas for digital signage, but talk to me about how much more or less difficult it is for you to kind of work with partners such as that. Sure. It's interesting. It's obviously a beautiful cathedral of sports. It's new. It's wonderful. We built our infinity screen. 2.2 million pounds and 70,000 ft², but people forget field has been around since 2009, and you might say, well, that's relatively recent in terms of stadium market architecture outside of places like Fenway Park and the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field. It's actually somewhat dated or was. So we actually walked the property with the mets organization figures where we could use screens to enhance the fan experience, but also strategically we had a vision from what is that experience from when the fan drives to the ballpark or takes the subway or public transportation to when they leave. How can they experience a different way? Let's face it, we're all busy now. So getting a fan off his or her couch to come to the stadium is a pretty daunting task. It's got to be honestly the excellence on the field, but it's that experience. So we retrofitted the Met stadium. We are working with the Houston Astros for a minute made park and that will add some scoreboards and some technology for the beginning of the beginning of the opening day for this year. And even I'd sort of point out two with Citi Field, what's interesting, too, is we work with the mets to put LED behind home plate. That's actually for the fan at home so they could see better some of the signs and so forth. So there's interesting things that that experience on the field, but also for the fan at home, so this technology kind of helps them enjoy the game a little bit better too. Yeah, old man bar remembers when he used to go to Michigan and trumbull, the old Tiger stadium and he was a little boy and he's in the stands and I remember now Tiger stadium folks and everybody remembers that who knows from Detroit, you had the column. So

"Well then basically the final 1376 is points in the fourth quarter to help Philadelphia for a one O four one O one win and basic consecutive baskets to give the sixers a one point lead with 18 seconds to play. It then had three straight free throws that sealed the victory. I just wanted to come in and fit in and, you know, whenever I was needed, that's when I felt like I needed to turn it off. And they'd finished with a game high 30 points to buy as Harris at a 24 Trae Young and Deandre hunter had 18 for Atlanta. Michael luongo, Philadelphia.

"And you look at the roster and it's like they want to win right now, but in two or three years, that is when this team is going to peak in my opinion. Is kind of coming into his own when AJ Griffin who looks terrific. When he's coming into his own into the NBA, Jalen Johnson looks just, I think he's like a really good replacement whenever John Collins moves on and they trade him and they get whatever they can for John Collins, whose usage is completely plummeted. He's basically PJ Tucker for them. That could go south in the locker room at some point this season we'll see. But just a lot of really young Deandre hunter who I love, I'm the only person who liked that Deandre hunter extension and thought it was a steal for the hawks. I think I'm the only person alive. 95 million, I think. Something around there. So yeah, I mean, when he plays, it makes sense. He never know. He's going to get to the free throw line. Yes. I'm with you. I like him too. I just wish he played. Yeah, so I think there's a lot to like, a lot of the pieces fit. A lot of the young pieces fit as well. I think they can be good right now, but I think they can be, I don't know, I don't know if that is a championship contender, but just a very, very good team for years to come with the young pieces. Once those guys develop. I'm with you. I wish they had hurt her. Or even like a Sam Hauser type. They're missing that one guy who's just like the 6 8 guy who just hits 5 threes in the first half of some game and whatever. Just a little bit of three point variants. But other than that, I like what I've seen. They're better than I thought. And I thought, you know, I was really concerned about the Trey Murray combo, just like how that was going to work with the steering wheel, but it seems okay so far. Trail get hot. He'll get going. Yeah, my money would be on Atlanta. By the way, I checked. And Atlanta is actually favored for that division now. They're minus one 35 in Miami is plus one 25, but I don't know, I think there are much safer bet. All right, when's your next piece? We have a Luca Christian wood piece on the site tomorrow. Okay. Really loving their pick and roll chemistry. See how that keeps up. Hopefully it does. But yeah, thank you so much for having me on Bill. This was great. Thanks for coming on. It's been, it's been great to have you at the ringer too. I'm glad I'm glad we finally did it. So thanks for coming on. Good luck with everything. This episode of the Bill Simmons podcast is brought to you by my longtime friend. My friend for football season because football season is back and you watch how they actually play out. You see how the preseason predictions play out? See if the veteran quarterbacks trying to get that shot at one more ring or underdogs pulling off upsets in the playoffs. "Adjusted in their terminologies. And Murray is going to help a lot because I mean, I think one of the big things is if you have Trae Young and teams are going to attack Trae Young, you probably need to be really solid at the other perimeter spots around him and with Dijon Murray and Deandre hunter who I would like to see force more turnovers was probably part of that issue, but is a really solid on ball defender. It's now much easier to shift Trae Young to whoever the weaker of the opponent's perimeter players is going to be. And I don't see any reason why this can't be despite Trae Young being one of the very worst offenders in the NBA. At the point of attack, a, he won't be at the point of attack as much as you point out and we've seen them hide him on lesser offensive players, most famously in the Knicks series that they won two years ago in the next just couldn't exploit him at all. Nor could the sixers in the following round actually. I don't see any reason why this can't be at least an okay defensive team. A lot has been made about the fit of Trae Young and Dijon Marian offense about how these were two of the most bald dominant players in the NBA. What you want to say something you just made a face at me, what do you want to say? I feel like a lot has not been made of it. Oh, I feel like it's kind of been glossed over. Then make something of it, mister pelton. So I don't think the question is, I think part of the issue is that people will phrase this is, well, can they play together? And like, yeah, they're both really good players and, you know, hopefully Nate McMillan will adopt the Mike D'antoni strategy with Chris Paul and James Harden of one of these two guys is going to be on the court at all times. So we've got like 12 minutes a night where it's trae youngest team, 12 minutes a night where it's Dijon Murray's team. And then you're only looking at 24 minutes a night where you're actually playing the two wheels of the skies together. And Murray also is not, he's not a terrible catch and shoot three pointer. It's actually interesting having looked at these up for Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell last week. We think of those guys as much better three point shooters and they are overall than Dijon Murray. But in terms of catching shoots, he actually shot better than them last season according to the second spectrum data. They were so good. But off the table. So you never know what to make of those numbers, but continue, please. But that's not necessarily the relevant comparison for gente Murray. Kevin herder, who is now in Sacramento in one of the change that led to them getting Justin holiday that happened since we last talked about the hawks, when he was the guy who was facing the floor for the Dijon Murray John Collins or Clint capela pick and rolls, he hit 45 42%, I should say last year on catch and shoot threes. And he's also taken 7 of them per hundred possessions where Murray, you know, the other aspect besides his track record before last season is he was only attempting three and a half of those per hundred possessions. And sometimes it's as much about your gravity as a shooter is as much about how frequently you're shooting as it is about how well you're shooting it. So, you know, I do think that is going to be an adjustment early on and one of the things we talked about when I last came on is maybe if Trae Young is willing to at least do a little bit of off ball movement and be more of a threat there because he only attempted a 1.5 catch and shoot threes per hundred possessions last year, then maybe the most dangerous play actually becomes dejante Murray running pick and roll with one of those bags and its Trae Young spacing for him. I don't think Trae Young is going to love that personally. I don't think if Nate McMillan was like, all right, when you guys are on the floor, how about two thirds of the pick and rolls are dejante Murray and Trey, you're running around off the ball. That's not gonna go over well. And frankly, it doesn't really worry me, and it doesn't worry me because a Trae Young is just that good with the ball. He's so good with the ball that even if the spacing is a little bit worse with dejante Murray on one wing versus Kevin herder, I just think he's such an artist getting in the lane, floaters, free throws, has every pass in the book. He's a wildly underrated passer. Partly because he sometimes doesn't want to pass as much as he should, but he's a really good pastor. And I just think dejante Murray, what you lose and shooting, you gain in speed, athleticism and driving where if his guys sloughs in and Trae Young kicks in the ball, shoot, like a lightning bolt through that diagonal gap, he's in the lane and making things happen and you add in the defense and the rebounding and the turnovers he's going to create in the transition opportunities that will create. I think it ends up being a kind of a wash offensively, even if Trae Young doesn't change at all. If he changes 10%, 15%, he's never going to be Steph Curry. Everybody wants him to be Steph Curry. There's one Steph Curry. There's not even anybody who really resembles Steph Curry. But if he gets 10% of the way there, great, that's healthy. I don't really, I'm not that concerned about it. And to me, you named the guy who and you can expound on the Murray fit more if you want, but I want to make sure we hit like, I think to maybe the most important guy on this team now and going forward in terms of what their ceiling is as a team. Obviously he's not the best player or the second best player, the third best player, even though fourth best player on the team. I think Deandre hunter needs to make a leap for this team to really become a contender anytime in the next two or three years. And that leap is going to come a, he's got to take more threes, four and a half threes per 36 minutes is not good enough. He's got to take more because he's a pretty good three point shooter. And B, his decision making with the ball on closeouts. He's never going to run a million pick and rolls. That's fine. He's going to get the ball kick to him 'cause he doesn't have a ton of gravity. Teams leave him not wide open, but they're not super stressed out about him. He's got a pump, go catch, go more decisively and get way, way better as a passer on the move when the floor is kind of in flux. He had 68 assists and 69 turnovers last year. That's just not good enough. And to me, he's got to become the three and D and D where the second D is drive. He's got to become the apex of that for him for this team to hit its ceiling. Yeah, I think the idea of Deandre hunter has been better than the reality of Deandre hunter so far during his career. And he's had his moments. I mean, particularly during when he was healthy at the start of that playoff run, I feel like that was it. And then leading up into the 21 playoffs, that was a really strong stretch for him. It's interesting because you sort of mentioned it got to this with the volume of it. He hit 38% on threes last year. That should be out. We've found this ideal three and D without the drive part of it player. But because of the fact that he went from hitting 58% of his twos in 2021 to 47% last year, even though he hit 38% of his threes he was actually less efficient than he was this season before and had below average efficiency on league average usage. You'd expect that usage maybe to even go down a little bit further this year with the gente Murray in the mix. So at that point we need him to be ten to 15%, I think, you know, above average in terms of true shooting percentage to be a good offensive player for them. And it's also especially interesting because he's coming into a potential contract extension here and we've seen a couple of sub max extensions already signed by wings, obviously a lot of attention on the RJ Barrett deal, then also the kelton

"Like something like that is interesting for me from a fit perspective. Yeah. That to me just feels like another floor razor and not necessarily a ceiling razor for me. You know what I mean? I don't know. You tell me that the hawks could be you could do Trae Young dejante Murray Deandre hunter John Collins, miles Turner. Yeah? That's a fun team. That's a really fun team. The top of the east is so good though now. You've got to kind of you got to make a pretty ballsy move. If you're Atlanta, or you just have to slow play it a little bit more, which I feel like they push the button too fast. Where maybe they could have had a better draft pick. In a year, last season other than, but I don't know. I don't love what they've done. Getting all these players that kind of raise their floor a little bit too fast. I think you've got to let it marinate a little bit. Deandre does fit the age timeline for Trey and Dijon, though. In Deandre hunter, which is yeah, he does. And they're all mature enough to wear their past the youth of it all. Which is interesting. Yeah, now, if I was Atlanta, I think I agree with you. I'd go for Deandre. But yeah, the fact that Deandre ayton has struggled this much to get like $30 million a year is kind of baffling to me, especially given the way that the money is supposed to rise in the next couple of years due to TV contracts. Yeah, I was going to say this Mac contract is not going to look like a max and three years. Yeah, it's a minimax. It's a 25% max. It's bizarre. Yes. These are the times that you get guys on max contracts. And you feel very good about it. Yes. Pay the money. Robert sarver for the love of God just pay the money. Like, I just don't own the team anymore. I mean, I'm sure I know that sun's fans have been beating that drum for however long. He's on the team, but you hate that to be the reason why teams don't make it. Or that players don't get signed. Because of ownership, like those are the worst situations in the MBA. Maybe it's not maybe James Jones just doesn't have faith in Deandre anymore. Or maybe like the core pieces have been like, we don't we don't love Deandre anymore. I don't know that. I'm speculating on potential other reasons. It could be based on. The Phoenix. Deandre ayton. Right. I'd almost rather be that situation where it's like personality wise, this isn't going to work. It's just too baffling to me. Otherwise. And Deandre, it seems like it's just like a dude that like hang out and play video games and like, seems like a pretty good dude. So I don't know. Maybe he's like ready to move into a bigger role. I get that, but you're going to be able to move into a bigger role. Because this Chris Paul team's almost I could not last forever. He's 37. Yeah, no. I agree. It's weird. Andrew, we've gone for an hour, 15, I don't really want to go much longer than this. Tell the people what's going on. Tell the people where they can find you. "I mean, it'd be funny that you'd be going to play with another McDonald's, but you have picked 16 unless you trade. Would you trade Collins in 16 for Gobert? Is that too much? My idea was like Deandre hunter and 16 and guarantee Gallinari or something like that. You give them cap relief. If you give them the great wing defender that they are hunting for, give them a good draft pick. So you want to keep Collins in this scenario too. I would probably try and move Collins also. Move them elsewhere. Do it like in a separate deal. For like a great, I would try and find my wing in a Collins deal basically. Honestly, then for them, the Sacramento deal makes sense. Yep. Because then you get Harrison Barnes. Your wings are now, you know, you have heard her, but donovic Harrison Barnes, Rudy Gobert, you've Trey young, obviously. That's like a core that makes sense to me. Yes. I'm rolling with you. When we map it out, it makes a lot more sense. Moving parts. But yeah, when you map it out and I like that a lot more. And then you have the Kong Wu thing. Like I think there's a lot there. It seems like they're going to give Deandre hunter an extension. I don't know what that's going to be. I have no idea what his number is. Injury prone at this point, but he's great when he's on the court. They made a run without him, basically, in the playoffs. So I'm totally unclear on what that is. The other thing is like Atlanta has never paid the tax. That's the other thing. Under this ownership, Atlanta has not yet paid the tax. Are they willing to pay the tax? You would hope so. I think it's true. I think it's time. I agree. I'm curious what a hunter extension looks like. Yeah. I don't really know. 60 too much. Too little. No, I think it's too low. I don't think Connor accepts that. That's a situation where you get into the miles bridges issue of what happened this year. If you're extending him like it almost has to be for 18 to 20, I think. What he's going to ask for. What did OG what was his extension from Toronto again? Was it four for.

"That's been part of the reason and better because hunter was out for about two months this year. I think he had a risk, I think it was. He's had a few different injuries off and on, but yeah, he's back now. He came back and like mid January. And Deandre hunter, he was the number four pick three drafts to go in 2019. I think that he's just always been a really good player. He's very versatile. He's very big, 6 8 two 35. He can guard three positions. He's become pretty much a knockdown shooter. He's really developed as offensive game two. I would say that's from the big jump for him from college. This is the guy you can tell has put in work at his game. He's gotten better and better each year, pretty significantly. And Kevin herder is another guy that you and I both have been pretty high on. A guy that was in that 2018 draft and whenever people talk, I know it came up like, I think a big Twitter discussion I saw was like Colin Sexton or Kevin herder. I was like, I don't even hesitate. I must just scrub bang. I'm pulling the trigger on that one. Kevin herder. Because of all the different things he gives you, I think that he's like a really mobile fluid shooter. 48.9% on open catch and shoot this year. He's a lethal three point shooter in transition. 41.6 off the dribble as a finisher he's gotten a lot better this year. Kevin herder is a 70% finisher, which is a huge leap for where he was in the past. He can get a little I mean, the elevator pitch for the hawks is that you have this dynamic like, and this is something I want to talk more with you about the offensive flow of the hawks. Ideally, you have these three guys in bogey, who's a little older now. He doesn't really fit our discussion. He's 29. But herder off the catch, you can shoot it, but off the catch, you can also operate it and pass a little bit. In 5 years, what do you think Kevin heard or ceiling is? Is this a guy who could get into the like all star level? Is he could he be that good? That's a good question. I think really high level starter on an elite team. And I think it is said bogey, one change they've made also in the last few weeks, is herder is starting now. I think he's already a better player than Bogdanovich. He's better defensively. He's bigger. Got a lot of legs. And they've moved bogd into more of the point guard in the second unit role. And they're playing herd or next to Trae Young. And I just love herder is such a good fit with Trey because it's kind of like the classic Golden State thing. We're harder can guard multiple positions, high tray on defense, and then our offense, when the other team puts their big defenders on TRE, herder can punish them. So you go back to that Philly series last year, this might, I think it's kind of been forgotten about the history. Kevin herder had 27 points in game 7. They don't win that series like Kevin herder. And that's because Philly was put in Ben Simmons on Trey. And that was even Seth curry to guard Kevin herder. Kevin Hart is 6 foot 7. That's what makes him such an interesting prospect player. He's freaking huge for a two guard. He's legit 6 7 6 8. And they got Seth curry on him, and right now in South Korea can even do on Kevin herder. Can't go over and keep his chair basically. Yeah, he had a huge series. That was a really interesting series. I want to ask you more about that in a bit, but I mean, in terms of guys, the way the way this roster is built, we talked about having a few things that you do really well. Sometimes that can factor in or be driven by what a player thinks of themselves. Like you said money is really important to players. Obviously, money is important to everyone. That's just like what are you talking about? For sure. Well, I mean, I'm just, you know, big ball buster charts over here. But the one player that has sort of been a hinge in this discussion has been John Collins. John Collins is a guy, I'm very high on. I know the other day they were talking about Jeremy grant or John Collins. I was like, if you hesitate on that, that says to me a lot about what you know about basketball. I'm sorry, but that's strong. It's a good player. I like Jeremy Graham, but I think John Collins is a significantly better player. I don't even think it's close. I think he's his applications are more malleable. I just think he's I'm a big fan of John Collins. So you can discuss that. Because I think John Collins looks at Jeremy grant. It's like, dang. I wanna do that. Jeremy grant left an elite team to be the man somewhere else. And John Collins just put it out on the I think two weeks ago, he said, I want more touches. I want more shots. I want a bigger role in the offense. And that gets right to your point about how like John Collins would make him good, I think, is he's such a versatile player. He's really ground so he came into the league as a pure remron or athletic big. He's become a good shooter and prove us a ball handler and proves a defender. And now he really fits well on this team because he kind of fits in the cracks in a lot of places, but it kind of seems like based on what he's saying is he's tired, as LeBron once said, he's tired of fitting in. He wants to fit out somewhere else. Well, he said that about Kevin Love. He said, you need to fit in. So get your quote right there just to fire back at you there. Anyway. This is how we interact for anybody that doesn't know it's just constant.

"I'll save that. Before we move on to talk about a team, a really interesting young team that's made up of mostly on players, the Atlanta Hawks, we are going to take a break. All right, the Atlanta Hawks. A team that surprised people. I mean, at the beginning of last season, I know you and I talked a lot. You as a Dallas fan, I'm sure Dallas fans in particular sort of like the sons pay attention to the jazz because Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell that whole thing. I feel like the Dallas Atlanta dynamic has been fun to watch because they had the tray Luca thing, which is gonna be one of those like legacy trades we talk about forever. But the way that they've built their roster in the past few seasons has been intriguing. And in last year's playoffs, they kind of shocked people because they were ahead of schedule, came out. I mean, kick the door down, you know, and shot a few rounds in the air like Yosemite Sam and were like, hey, we're here to play ball. And it was really impressive. So we come back to this season and we think, okay, the hawks are here. They're a great team. They're firing on all cylinders. They have all this young talent, we expect them to hit the ground running and become sort of like sort of like those OKC teams always compared to that in the early 2010s. Remember how good they were and they were just like, we're here to kick ass. They didn't do that immediately. Why do you think that that is? Why did Atlanta fail to get out of the gate quickly as this season started? There's a couple things going on. I think they've been one of the most interesting teams in the league this year. I would say number one, we can go ahead and throw away the Oklahoma City cops. Team at Kevin Durant. I don't see Kevin Durant on the talks team. You don't pick three MVPs in a row. That was like, that was just an all time or never going to happen again. No. Yeah, so in the hawks as you kind of mentioned, they started off really slow. They were like, in the bottom of the east for the first two or three months of the year. And I think reason we wanted to talk about them isn't the last three to four weeks, all of a sudden, they flipped a switch. The number, there are 7 three in their last ten games. And all of a sudden it's like, this is the team we all thought they would be coming into the season. And that's 7 and three, they didn't beaten a lot of good teams that I think they'd be Milwaukee, they'd be Boston, they'd be Charlotte, Miami, like they've been going through the league pretty handily, beat the Lakers. There have been really fun to watch. And it's hard to know where to start with the hawks. I think we'll start here. We talked about the cameras train a few weeks ago. And I think a lot of it too, the hawks were the classic, there were too many guys on this team. Especially with young teams sometimes it can be, there's too many young guys who want touches who want shots. And what will happen is when there's everyone feels like it's almost like literally it's like there's too many chickens in the coop. And they're all kind of bunched up together and I can't be comfortable and their minister getting cut. And when they do get the ball they want to force up more shots because they're not getting the opportunities they're all playing for contracts. After they've tried it, so I said 7 and three, that sends the cameras trade. Is there 7 and three? And I think it's allowing Deandre hunter, Kevin herder, they're both really getting more opportunities to show what they can do with cam gone. Yeah, and I think in the NBA and maybe just in the broad sense in life in general, it's better to do a smaller amount of things really well than to do several things like okay. You know, like when you got a bunch of guys and I think this is the case where just focusing on a few, you'll see you'll see good teams you'll be like, why are they lowering their rotation to like 7 guys? Doesn't it make sense to play more guys? To have what I think happens is if you have a lot of good players and they're not getting to contribute to a certain amount to a certain extent, I feel like their effort is kind of impacted by that, you know, instead of on the flip side, if you have like a few players, if you have like 7 or 8 guys who are consistently knowing what they're going to be doing knowing what their role is, they're buying level is going to be a little higher. Don't you think? Yeah, I think so. I mean, I think it all comes back to money too. You get paid off your stats, right? If there's too many guys eating into your stats, your money's gonna get hit. And it's funny sometimes, I feel like NBA media and NBA teams too. They speak out both ends of their mouth. Well, let's say something like, it's all about winning. You gotta sacrifice, did you come for that contract, they'll say, well, I'm looking at your points per game. That's that doesn't seem too high to me. How much money do you want exactly? Is that right? It is. It's a league that cannibalizes the spirit of the sport. I've said this before, that we talk a lot about how winning is important and everything. But then all the incentives are driven by awards and awards are driven by counting stats a lot of the time. Even the conversation you and I just had, you asked me about Jaron Jackson and I was like, well, you know, you hesitate you're just like the numbers don't fit this template. It's like basketball's designed to be this certain way. Anyway, that's a digression, but I said we wouldn't get off the interstate we did. But talking about the hawks, reddish being out of there has led to more involvement for a few key guys. Who do you think reddish is the absence of cam reddish? Who has been impacted the most by that? Hunter, I think, is the bigger name. Hunters a guy..

"I don't know, man. There's a part of me that wonders and worries if I'm the hawks, like am I giving up a player that could be a pretty good percentage of what Jalen Brown is and giving up Deandre hunter and if I do that, I'm also giving a per and I'm also giving up Johnson and I'm giving up two unprotected picks like bruh. So the Celtics expands that are saying like, hell no, we won't go. What? Like you're not even gonna consider that? Because if I'm the hawks, I'm terrified of giving up all that stuff. For a jump, and I love Jalen Brown, so but I also love Deandre hunter. To me, it's an actually really interesting trade, which is why I said, oh, and the Google Doc it hits you with the face that I hit you with. This morning because it was almost like I was reminded of how interesting a trade it was. When I saw it again, and when we were talking about it again, it's a really interesting train that potentially helps both teams because you've got too much talent in Atlanta, seemingly at times. But you also don't have one guy that you kind of view as like a go to guy, who was the closest thing that McDonald's, maybe? Or at least last year, you would have said that because he could handle the ball a little bit on his own, or maybe you don't trust John Collins to do that quite as much. Hunter would be that guy. You're hoping that he grows into that guy is the other guy that gets does that too. But I don't know if you have like another guy that is kind of at tres level offensively. That might be what you want or what you need, whereas Boston just needs depth. They just don't have it. They've got a lot of guys that are interesting, but kind of more interesting in theory than they are actually on the court. And so I think it would solidify both teams quite frankly. I like the trade a whole lot, but like you said it would be this season. You've boosted my confidence. You made me feel really good about myself because I thought. That I made a huge mistake in writing this after just the general reaction by every Celtics fan in my mentions telling me I'm a huge idiot. And I see it from that perspective, of course. I see it from jaylen Brown one time all star potentially a two time austra this year. I mean, he just scored 50 points. I know it was against the Orlando Magic, but scored 50 points in a game efficiently, followed that up with 30 points against the spurs and the loss. And so the talent is just like, it's overwhelming, and if you don't get a star back for him, it's disappointed. Do you get where we were talking about? I remember the conversation before was about like, I remember we had the conversation about Lillard months ago at this point. And I was saying, if I was the blazers, I would entertain that. In part, just because they need to move the hell on with some of these things that they've got in Portland. If it's not for him, maybe you use him as a centerpiece and McCallum and you train everything else and you get everything else that the blazers possibly have to offer..

"100%. We love it. So this trade, there should be a quick caveat, which is that it's not going to happen this season. It's too complicated to trade Kevin herders, contract is an extension that's poison pilled and the money just wouldn't work and it's involving one player for several players and it was way too complicated. So basically, I wrote about this under the pretense that both teams would struggle for the rest of this season, maybe one of them wouldn't even make the playoffs. Definitely not get out of the first round. And just essentially look like they're spinning their wheels heading into the off season. And I thought that this was an interesting way for them both to shake things up. The immediate reaction that I saw online on Twitter, et cetera was incredibly negative in the sense that the Celtics are getting absolutely hosed here. They're getting two role players, picks that will be in the 20s and the prospects of no one knows anything about. And so I don't feel that way at all. So I want to hear your reaction to it as a very smart person. Yes, tell me. Honestly, I'm first of all, I would really seriously consider if I was Boston if not just straight up do it. But secondly, I would be scared shitless to do it if I was Atlanta. Because that's a lot of talent that you're sending out not to mention the picks. Like, I'm not, I don't necessarily know that Deandre hunter will become jaylen Brown, but if you had to hand pick three people that you thought could, is he not one of the three? As far as I mean, he has a ways to go still as far as what he can do off the dribble, but just kind of the way he projects. Not to mention that he really hasn't had like a full on opportunity to do it yet just as far as like staying healthy and also look at how many other guys he plays with that are very capable, which that was always my thing. You know, I've been wrong about plenty this year already, but other things I was right about. I remember saying really definitively, I thought the polls would be really good this year. And I thought that the hawks would struggle. And a big nailed it. Impetus that I had for the hawk struggling was that they've got so much talent that I kind of feel like these guys are gonna really grow unevenly. Like I think we're all expecting them all to take a step forward this year and it's just not possible. It doesn't work that way. And part of that is like all these. And you wrote about this before the season started shout out to you. And a mag piece that some guys are not going to get fed when they're hungry. And in terms of getting the ball and just getting opportunities to kind of show what they can do after a year where they got a chance to really shine on a big stage, Deandre hunter didn't really get that opportunity throughout the playoffs because he got hurt. So that was after he'd been hurt for most of last season anyway. So.

"Like what the hawks have done where they have so many capable wings that they can throw at you and I think that's when it was a big key to their success last year. Obviously everyone's gonna struggle with this year, but yeah, I'm gonna go cam reddish here. I like it a lot. Yeah, he's shooting under 30% on mid range jumpers and nearly 40% on threes. So I think the thing for him is and this is a lot to say about the system and the situation that he's in and it's like, it's not the easiest thing in the world to get a rhythm as an offensive player and particularly as someone who's asked to score on that team right now. There's so many mouths to feed and the guy who sets the table is their leading score and one of the highest scorers in the entire league. So it's just a difficult situation he's making the most of it. The athleticism and the upside and I would not, man, it's tough 'cause everyone talks about how they need to trade one of these guys, cam, hunter, they already signed her, and I wouldn't want to trade any of them. I'm just like, I don't want to take that chance either. I don't want to take that chance either. I'm with you. I'm riding it out with those guys for as long as I can. So that's just going to be really interesting. I do want to tell a quick camera story. I don't think I have on the pod. But an extremely quiet him and Deandre hunter, both from Philly, best friends on the team, super quiet, except when they talk to each other is what I was told by everybody. And when I spoke to cam, he was very quiet. I asked him a certain question that I don't believe I can share on the pod unfortunately, but their PR guy told me that he had never heard cam as loud responding to my question in all of his time around him. So that was fun. I got a rise out of him. All good natured, but he got very excited when I asked him a certain question about the great story to hear with absolutely zero context or details. I know. I'm sorry. Thank you for that. I try to give what I can, you know? That's what I try to do. Okay, so I'm up with sometimes it's sometimes it's better not to give it all, you know? It's all just exactly. You understand. Yeah. Okay. This is, okay, I'm looking at the pool here. I'm really nervous that we're just gonna totally whip on somebody. Looking at the pool or looking at pool. Oh, touche. I mean, both to be honest with you. I'm considering that. I also, like, I would have maybe I have Kelvin Johnson, but he's kind of down on my board, not because I don't like him, but yeah, we're definitely gonna miss someone and some fan base is gonna hate us forever. So that'll be fun. Man, I know who you wanna take at number 11. You do. Yeah. There's someone I wanna take, but I'm not taking them yet. I'll tell you that right now..

"I mean, he's got to a place where he's a killer, man. As you mentioned, like he's someone who I think defenses need to fear. In a similar guard, they fear someone like tray on. So he's been really good. I would pick them number three also. I think he's been fantastic. Cleveland's just so good. And I love like the Rubio love minutes they get for like random pockets in the middle of games and they've turned into like a weirdly deep team that can beat you in a couple of ways and just suffocate you and they need to get stops. God, Cleveland's really good. I think they have the best net rating in the east. They've announced landing. Number four is really hard, I think. I think this is the most difficult pick of the track. I mean, I know where you're going with it. So can I talk about some guys who are on the board here? No, you can't. We're going to get to all these names, but I want you to tell me who you're picking. I think I'm going to go with just let it out. It's okay. I think I'm going to go Deandre hunter because my number four. Oh wow, I was not expecting this at all. I was not expecting this. Yeah. So this is a tough pick because we know who's on the board here, but I just think at the end of the day, punters always played on a team that's chock full of wings and he's never going to be kind of the number one option in the way Trae Young is. I just think if you could get what the fourth pick, a guy who can be really impactful in a playoff series. That's a huge win. Because I know everyone wants to pick a superstar, et cetera. The realistically, they're just not that many in any given draft. And I look at hunter, a few switched, say, it's hard because the injuries have obviously played a role here. But if you put Deandre hunter on the sons instead of Mikhail bridges, could Deandre hunter turn into Mikhail bridges, I think he could come close. He's maybe not quite as good, but I think he could come close. I just think that he's a really good player who can show more than he's shown in Atlanta. And the only reason he has it is because he plays with himself. He plays the right role for this team. I think he's going to become kind of it's funny because the league obviously everyone's looking for three and do you guys? But the real value are the guys who can do a little bit more. And I think he's that. He's somewhere in between three and D and an all star. And I just think he's really good and I trust that he can be a great cog in a playoff rotation for the next ten years. So that's why I'm picking Deandre hunter. I love Deandre hunter. The reason why I did not have him for on my board is his body and the annual concern that he's not going to be able to play..

"This is not new. But I do think that it's worse. So yeah, much more worried about them. Atlanta is Atlanta unfortunately is just funky because Nate McMillan is messing with their office too much. He should have just kept running the same office that was just absolutely cooking people and kept that team defending. He'll losing Deandre hunter hurts them, but they've got enough guys that this could create a lot of clarity for them long term. So yeah, I'm way more worried about Boston and you start hearing yeah, I'm just, I don't know. I think Boston they could go anyway as far as the trade market goes. And I don't know. I look around at their roster. The guy that seems like he could be moved as Marcus smart when is he eligible to be traded? Is it January 15th? Received December 15th. I can't remember. Because it's not like the traditional like December 15th, it's a 6 months after he signed his extension. Yeah. But he's eligible to be traded before the deadline. He's a guy that I guess they could move, I just, I don't know. I don't believe any of the jaylen Brown talk, that would be one of the dumber trades. I can't believe you would anybody would even think about that. Yeah, I agree. But I mean, of course, yes, if you're talking to Boston, you want jaylen Brown 'cause he's a superstar. Yeah. But for what's worth on Marcus smart, he is eligible to be traded January 25th. 25th. Okay, perfect. Thanks. Yeah. Now I know that. And so yeah, he's eligible to be traded before the deadline, but it might be too late for them by then. I mean, if they're in the play end range, I don't know. What are you gunning for? To get beat by the bucks in the second round. Maybe I'll move a question up though I was gonna ask you later because this might be a good follow up, right? We're about one 5th of the way through the season. Which team strikes you as the one that's most likely the deadline to decide that it's time just to break up some of their core and make a big trade that is more of like a seller's trade than a buyer trade. You know, that's an interesting question because you know, it's funny, we've been talking about the teams that we think should be favorites, but there is a lot of parity. When you look around the league, if you told me that the Mavericks at the deadline made a really smart move and got, I don't know, let's say they wound up with somehow on a buyout and maybe they lucked into a decent wing. And now all of a sudden Dallas might have a shot to come out of the west, depending on how things shake out. You know, injuries play a part in all of this every single year. But I think that there's a bunch of teams in both conferences that should feel like, you know, a couple things break our way. We can come out of this conference. We can make a finals birth. I mean, Phoenix did this just last year. We've seen it. Would that being said? I think Portland, you, I mean, you look at them, Portland could be a team that's like, okay, well, we gotta shake this up, dame or CJ or whatever..

"Talk about that Philly series like it wasn't a 7 game series like the sixers didn't also somehow win three games? In blue like 24, 24.8 leads, yeah. And yeah, if they had taken Simmons off the floor and some of those fourth quarters, who knows? It just I agree. There is some revisionist history, does feel like I want that platform series. I'm curious where you fall on the cam reddish Deandre hunter, there's some idea that the hawks are eventually going to choose amongst their perimeter rotation guys. Maybe they won't be able to afford to keep all of them even though I think there's no reason for them not to projecting long-term. Is there one of those guys you'd rather have? I mean, come into this season. I think it was easily hunter for me. Sam. But I am not off that response quite yet. I'm a little nervous about hunters, ability to stay healthy now, frankly. And the knee injury that he had last year. I mean, two surgeries and, you know, that's young for you to be having. So that's not nothing. His ceiling still seems to me to be perennial all star two way wing that every very good team needs and would be a perfect fit with what they have going for them. But cam looks like he just looks really confident in a way that he hadn't in his first two years right now. And the bag is deep with cam reddish and I love it. And I think that he's also a very good can be a very good two way player who there's some time someday if he gets traded to a different team. I can see him having a Paul George esque career. So it's tough. I don't know who is the better. Who's the better player versus who's the better fit might be a different question. And yield a different answer for this type of situation. So yeah, I think we're in the exact same spot 'cause I really thought this was gonna be like a Deandre hunter breakout season. I thought he was going to have, you know, he was going to be a big reason why they were going to be so playing so well and have a high seed, et cetera. And said he's got this injury and not quite looking. I think playing to the potential we both think he has, as that perennial two way, also, and you mentioned reddish. I mean, yeah, he does maybe like to shoot because like you said a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But he has, I wish Deandre hunter had his creativity or his gumption sometimes. Like there's a little bit of each other's games. I wish they could steal from each other. Because cam reddish does have that little bit of I think more irrational confidence that you kind of need sometimes..

"Become a legitimately real positional defender. And then you throw him next to Deandre hunter and then you throw them next to Clint capella, obviously as well. John Collins has gotten so good at the aspects of defense in terms of just reading where the hell where he needs to go help. Being disruptive, sliding his feet. He's gotten so much better at that than what he was coming into the NBA, that man, he's just an awesome third best player, second best player to have around. I feel like now. I think that Atlanta might be two years away from being the dominant team in the NBA. I don't think that's crazy that they would need to do one of two things. They would need like a real substantial leap from either Deandre hunter or Kevin herder or cam reddish. Or they would need to package some of that talent into a superstar. If it comes available. I wouldn't package this thing. I think I think hunter is in all star type of talent. Yeah. If I was them, I would be looking at like, maybe it's this off season, maybe it's like at the deadline. You know, whenever the next star comes available, I'd be looking at cam reddish, Kevin herder, Jalen Johnson and firsts for a star. And I think that that's a big enough package to go get a star at this point. Or you could just keep them and have insane depth around Trae Young. It's really hard to keep up guys, though. Because they're all gonna get paid. Well, you've already paid John. Yeah, well, that's why I said the next two years. So you gotta, you have to do it in the next two years. Yeah. The guy that would have to go for me in order to keep those guys will be capella. Because you have a Congo. And I think a Congo can be compelled capella. Yeah. You have to hope so at least, yeah. Man, and yucca. I'd love to see him get healthy. He's good. I think he's really good. He's not as long as compiler is, but he's got the same. I mean, the same and same exact instincts and stuff. Yeah. This is I will say this. This is a team that if we're talking, we've kind of base this whole podcast around the idea of weaknesses. I don't really know what their weaknesses like on the court are. They just might not have enough talent yet. They might not be there. Their weakness, their weaknesses aspiring. Yeah. Like, they're just not, they're just not old enough. But I mean, you know, you've got dynamic. Well, the weakness might be, you don't have a second dynamic playmaker. Yeah, that might be. Yeah. That's probably it. If you're against the clock and you don't have and if you're against the clock and trade doesn't have the ball, you're secondary curator is bygone bogdanovic. Who's okay? He's okay. Or, you know, Gallo pump fake and I hope you jump or hunter or harder. That's a crazy thing. They haven't even had Gallinari like Lou Williams, hasn't played yet, a Kong who hasn't played yet. The theme is insane..

You know, I haven't seen your your beautiful faces and so long and so this is a real treat for me. So thank you for for blessing. Me with them. I want I'm going to bless you and welcome you back with a question that I was just. It came off. A conversation I was having earlier today. Let's say we are drafting redrafting The rosters Celtics and Hawks Hello. Yeah, so first of all, number one, pick obviously, I need to know. Second question is, how many hawks do you pick before you pick your third Celtic? So who is the first place? I mean it's really tray or trailer adjacent. I I think it's still safely. Jason hopefully. Oh I would, I'd safely. Yeah. Same as defense is a consideration and it's very safely Jayson Tatum's. But I think your second question about the how many hawks get picked before the 3rd Celtic? Does that's, that's a little bit of a, a Harrier question for you to answer there. That is that's I mean, first pick for me is still, it's nice to them. I think second would betray young, third would be Jaylynn and then yeah it gets. I mean we're talking about building a team, right? Yes. Yeah not just just, just a player necessarily. Okay, do you need right? You need a cappella, like, you can start the whole right? I mean, I'm trying to think now is a good even be my number three on the Celtics. That's another good question, right? That's I think it's, I mean in the first player that popped in my head is smart. Would you guys agree with that? Or am I wrong a without thinking about it for more than five seconds? Smart is definitely the yeah, at this point, which is scary for the Celtics play. Yeah. That's who I think it might be that. We'll talk about later. But yeah. Okay. So Thursday I have Okay. DeAndre Hunter, I would put ahead of smart. I mean John Collins. John Collins bogey-bogey. I would put had a swear to God. Bogey hurting them just like how far down here? It's a crazy crazy. I mean, they have such a good. They have such a good roster, page, Kevin huerter or exciting for this type of exercise..
