"Potter, and reframes them and recontextualizes them in a way where it takes into account intersections of race, gender, sexuality, gender identity, that J. K. Rowling either doesn't care about or doesn't know about. One of my favorite examples of this is a fix that comes from 2016 called do black wizards nod, which is a really fantastic short, thick that just describes dean Thomas, a character who is always described so explicitly as black. And then just puts them in an intersection with another black character, and it's all about dean Thomas, going to not the Hogwarts train for the first time and seeing blaze a beanie who would end up in slytherin, you know, dean Thomas is a Gryffindor and blaze is a slytherin dean Thomas is muggle born and plays a beanie is from a pure blood family. And essentially, he's looking and he asks his mom, do you think black wizards nod at each other when they see each other and they're like the only other the only black people in the space. And that is just a question Harry Potter is never asked. It's never asked how race functions in the wizarding world. It assumes an a sort of neoliberal mid 90s end of history type way that all isms will be completely flattened once we get on a level playing field otherwise power. In terms of other trips, times of power. And it's so comforting though to read a fic that actually does ask what makes wizarding society different in terms of race and candide and blaze still have a connection through their shared history. Where outside of that simple connection they would have nothing to do with each other. And there's other examples of the black Hermione was something that I read the books and I envisioned myself as Hermione. I had braces and glasses and wild bushy hair. I clearly thought of myself as Hermione Granger. And there's also been popular headcanon, which is that Harry Potter and his parents are a desi family, which I think makes a lot of sense and is kind of comforting to say, well, she didn't envision it this way, but I can read this book and still feel like I see indianness in the text where it really does not show up in the text at all. The England in 1995. Because race didn't exist at that point. No. And do you know I just I mentioned before the break that I feel like this game kind of just accelerated or cemented a process that began like a really long time ago. Not least because of what we're talking about, which is the issue with Hogwarts legacy, is the same issue that Harry Potter has, which is that it's really actually not compatible with progressive politics that J. K. Rowling used to consider herself like a Beacon of and still considers herself a Beacon up. There's no way that the people of color in both the 1890s version of Hogwarts or in the 1990s version of Hogwarts wouldn't have thoughts about the British colonial empire as it existed or at that point in time. And it just makes you realize what the fuck was everyone doing when the other shit was happening in the world. Like what was happening during the aids crisis or like World War II or just like institutionalized racism. And these are just questions that are never answered in the canon and then the game it seems like tries to retcon it into the canon by adding in this kind of surface level diversity. And it just makes the dissonance so much stronger. It's bizarre. You know, there are so many more professors of color in 1890s Hogwarts than there are in 1995. It feels egregious because we know in 1995 every single one of Harry's professors will be a white person. In 1890s, oh, there's professor Shaw. And your broom instructor is Japanese and the herbology professor is Chinese and all of this stuff. And it's like, well, where did they go? After this. Also, it is weird for me, you know, I'm mixed race and half Indian. My mom actually teaches post colonial literature in a collegiate level. So I think about a lot of these things all the time. But to be an Indian in the UK in the 1890s, it's definitely possible, right? Because India is a British colony, but Andy is a British colony into be an Indian in victoriana in England. You would have to be an exceptional person, like a mathematical genius or an extraordinary beauty or an incredible artist in some way. That's how marginalized people end up tokenized to cross cultures at this time. And the game does not necessarily portray the real world's politics as interacting with the characters there. In a way that really feels bizarre frequently, the look of the books that it sort of makes sense, you know, she's not trying to promote equality. She's trying to promote the continuation of the status quo. Voldemort isn't a threat because he is once inequality. Inequality exists in the wizarding world, explicitly. House elves, house elves are slaves. It's slytherin also exists. That's just a house in a school that's four evil wizards. None of them go to the final battle at Hogwarts. They all run away. That's canonical. Why does slytherin still exist? It's just the forces of the status quo are good. Anyone who tries to change the status quo in any direction is bad, and it feels like weirdly enough, the ultimate message of Harry Potter is that you should grow up to become a cop. Yes. Which is wild. Like the conclusion to come to at the end of 7 books and 8 movies. Is that, you know, if good people are in the system, then the system works. And that's wild. People can change. Oh my God. I just like joining the same administration that basically like actively gas let you for years about the return of wizard Hitler two. And you're just like, ah, yes, I will be a cop for them. Like that branded you in the press is a traitor to the wizard. Yeah. And you're just like, when you were a child. I just feel like the message in Harry Potter should have been that he should have been an anarchist. My man should have straight up. Yes. And he was just like, no masters, no borders. No, exactly. But he's like, no, I want to be an or I'd like to be a magical cop, please. Thank you. Thank you. I just wish to wheel of power. 'cause that's the best version of this. It's just like Harry Potter is such a specific vision from such a specific person is a fantasy four British people and only British people, once you take one or two steps outside of essentially Hogwarts and the area is delineated by the books, the world that J. K. Rowling has built just starts to break down. And it doesn't even take that much time until you start seeing the inconsistencies. Yeah. I mean, I think what we're coming down to in this discussion is politics notwithstanding. If the game had been good, we'd be having a much different conversation. And we're having this conversation because the game is bad because of the politics of the person who made it. Yeah. Therefore, there are better options out there. You can have fun doing something else. Please do. We have evolved beyond the

Hi, y'all. Hope you're enjoying today's show. This is your first time listening to I see why my then welcome. We're so thrilled to have you here in case you missed it. That's what I see why my stands for. Also our show comes out twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You're currently listening to the Saturday episode and our past Wednesday's episode was all about the beef between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber. There's a lot going on. So much going on. You definitely don't want to miss it. And we're back to talk about childhood. Let's talk about our inner child. I'm in therapy now. I know that. Oh, I love it. Rachel, I have a question for you. It's my therapist's voice. Did you read Harry Potter fan fiction? Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Not as a child, which I think is really interesting. Because I'm narcissistic, but I didn't engage in Harry Potter fan fiction until like 2020. Because as we talked about a rough year for everybody, for reasons we don't need to talk about anymore. And at that point, I got so into wolf star, which is the ship between remus lupin and Sirius black to the point that I bullied my entire team into letting me do a whole episode on all the young dudes, which is a 500,000 word remus lupin serious black fan fiction. Bullying or was that for their own good? I mean, I think it's for their own good, but they have some disagreements about that. Fear I was also a huge wolf starship or the best ship. I loved wolf star my ship of choice for them was a shoebox project, which was a thick that's written as if it's a collection of ephemeral materials, like the kind of stuff you'd keep in a shoe box, like mementos from school. And part of what I really like about fan fiction like this is we're both interested in what fans are Harry Potter called the quote unquote, like the marauders era, which is essentially just when Harry's parents went to school. Yeah. And there's like a lot of interesting character dynamics in that, especially like in the third book, you get to meet serious and remus as adults and they have an intense bond that feels, I don't know, it just feels very romantic to me. Also, it's just like, werewolf ism is like a disease that requires people to take medication and make some very weak and sickly and also makes people afraid of having werewolves around their children because they don't want their children to be infected. It's a very on the nose aids allegory. And for years, I thought that this meant that remus lupin was a gay man. I feel like, as a reader, that J. K. Rowling doesn't really understand what she wrote with that character. Like remus lupin is a gay man. If you're writing an aids allegory, you're not gonna make that character straight. Usually. No, exactly, and it's also like the actor who played lupin in prisoner of Azkaban, David thewlis, and also Alfonso cuaron who directed prisoner of Azkaban, both were like, yeah, this character's gay. We're playing him as gay. Like everyone knows. I just read but was written down and we just all decided to go with it. So for J. K. Rowling to be like, actually. Actually, you're wrong, and I'm right. I was just like, bitch shut up. I don't give a fuck what you say anymore. It was that and then her saying that Hermione could be read as black. No, she was like, if you'll notice, I never said she wasn't. And it's like, babes, every single black character in this series is very clearly black because you describe them as black with the capital. Single time. Remember when we finally met Blaise the beanie? Blaze the beanie that everyone thought was an Italian, a beautiful white Italian. She was like, and he's black and she went to such great laces describe his high cheekbones and dark skin and it's like I didn't necessarily want to know how you fetishize black people, but now I do. Now I'm aware. Now I'm wearing now I know every other character who's not described this way is probably white. Thank you for letting me know. Unless her name is Cho Chang and we can all guess what's happening there. Oh my God. Kill me. Kingsley shackle ball, you know? Black and the black man. Yes. Exactly. Exactly. We would know if a character was black because she went out of her way to describe black characters blackness every time they appeared. Yes, yes, there's this really popular idea, I feel like among the turf adjacent right. People who are themselves with J. K. Rowling, that the reason Harry Potter fans don't fuck with JK is because of her terpenes, which is a good enough reason not to fuck with someone. But like we said before, her depth of an author journey, the moment that fans started to be like, actually, you know what? I don't think this belongs to you anymore. It belongs to us and we're ignoring you, began a long time before it became just so crystal clear how transphobic she was, which means that the Harry Potter fandom has had a wild to kind of figure out what it meant to be a fan of this series. Especially if you were a fan who was just like not cis or white or straight. Like you already knew that what was written down was not going to be the end all be all for you. Yeah. You know, I think a lot of fandom in a broad sense. It has to do with sort of finding yourself in a text when you are not necessarily represented as you would like to be. And there is a lot of fan fiction that takes the ideas the environment of Harry Potter and reframes them and recontextualizes them in a way where it takes into account intersections of race, gender, sexuality, gender identity, that J. K. Rowling either doesn't care about or doesn't know about. One of my favorite examples of this is a fick that comes from 2016 called do black wizards nod, which is a really fantastic short, thick that just describes dean Thomas, a character who is always described so explicitly as black. "You ready to Instagram? Thank you guys. Thank you so much. Good luck with your fight, man. Well, we need some jokes for you before we get off. I have nothing to prove. My therapist yesterday, I have nothing to prove to anybody. If you want jokes, go to Adam comedian or Adam hunter, I will make a thousand jokes about you during your fight. Next Saturday, I'm going to order your fight and you have lots of jokes about you and the ones these Callie boys got to stop messing with New Jersey boys. Yes, I totally agree. He should knock people out and make it rain on them. But maybe you could do that to him. If the guy lands a bunch of clean shots and beats me up or see it, like great for him, I'm going out there and not lose an I'm going to take his head off. To do that and I put a dollar in his G string, or just for like old time's sakes, he wakes up at least he'll have the mouse. If I got to throw the money when I come out, he told me he's bang thousands of women in his life. By the way, just so you know, I don't doubt it. Make him a chlamydia test or something before the fight. Like an STD test or something. Hopefully he doesn't touch me. It's going to be great, man. You guys can now touch herpes instead of touching gloves. So you're watching it, you're watching our flight TV. I'm going to watch it on 5 TV. I can't wait to get some jokes out of it. I can't wait to see you. Are you getting kid in plays? My man with treach, Flavor Flav. How could you go wrong? I'll be sure. I mean, how could you what's up with you on the UFC event you were on the big screen the other night? Yeah, I have a special I have two specials on fight pass. One called Adam hunter throwing punches. It's on fight pass. Another one, UFC comedy jam. It's me, Henry cejudo, dean Thomas and Chael Sonnen all doing a comedy show. And we have another one coming out. We're shooting in April in Las Vegas. I think it's gonna be julianna Pena and some other people aljamain. Make sure you reach out on saint drew and he said, what's up? Make sure you get me on some talk about some podcast stuff on there. Absolutely. It was a good friend of mine. Make sure that you guys talk about me coming over to fight MMA soon because I'm sure you guys want to see me starch Davis. I do. I do. I will talk to I don't know rich Chao anymore, but whoever the matchmaker is, but. Nate, Nate, I don't know. I used to be rich. I don't know who it is now, over at Bellator. But yeah, just want to just call him out. Maybe this fight will see what happens. If you see the fake wrestling MMA or have you called out Dylan dannis after you win, he's got to fight me. He has to. Have you call him out and he'll definitely respond and he's got a pretty big reach. So at least you'll get all that. What about kimbo? You want to see if I can bill after? No, I mean, I like him, but Kimball's dad was a legend and it's not the same..

"Well, first, the first thing I'm going to do differently at him is I'm not going to trust the UFC PI to do my meals again because then I know I'm not going to get poisoned two days before the biggest fight of my life and be puking my guts up 20 times. So that's the first adjustment that I'm going to make. The second one is I'm going to wrestle more because I know who's been scared to wrestle with me. He knows if he gets in scrambles and we have to wrestle and it gets we have to dig deep. He's going to be too tired and he's going to fatigue and it strikes aren't going to be as powerful and he's going to quit. He's a quitter at the end of the day. You just have to take him those deep waters. And last fight I didn't take him to the deep waters because I was sick man. I got food poison two days before the fucking fight. And third, the third adjustment is we're not going to have Mark not so Goddard. Saving his fucking life. That second round, when I kicked him in the liver, he would have been finished. I rocked him a minute before that. And then I kicked him in the liver and his liver was shutting down. He was quitting. He would have, I would have put so many strikes against the case. He would have just gave up. It would have been a TKO there. But no, Mark Goddard saved his life through my life raft and he did it again with the fake eye Pope when he was faking out on the other eye. And you know, so I'm going to have a competent ref that calls the fight fairly and it's down the middle. And you know, besides that I've made a lot of adjustments in my striking game, you know, keeping my hands up a lot more fakes. You know, just a lot more death to my striking game that people are going to see soon. And all thanks to Colby Covington and corporated. Now Rashad Evans opening up his own gym in Florida. Are you going to bring him in? Shit, I might have to, man. I heard he had a fallout with those men who's been treated him like shit. And it's sad because Rashad always had to lose his back. He put, you know, fake newsman on his couch when fake newsman had nowhere to stay and no money and, you know, he brought him up and gave him a gym and gave him an opportunity and helped him out and worked with him. And then for Uzbek had to turn his back and think he's bigger than Rashad and think he's, you know, God's gift to earth because that's what everybody says, you know, the fake newsman thinks he's just better than people now. It's just sad. So, you know, maybe I will hire Rashad. I've always had respect for him and I respect his accomplishments and also dean Thomas started his own gym. I know that dean trains woodley, but I don't think he'd be a post training you. As long as he's not fighting anymore, that might be a dean Thomas. Never heard of him. He was a trainer at your gym. Come on, dean Thomas. Amazing fighter. You have some fighters. Possibly a Hall of Famer. Yes, dean Taylor. I don't know, I don't have that in front of me, but I'm sure I'm sure Joe. I think I remember that guy. His name was didn't do nothing..

Now nobody thinks you think all black people look the same. That's my set. This looks really bad. But it was really dark in there so you couldn't tell. It was made it better. That definitely made it less racist. Oh man. And you know, you can't see him in the dark. Only if you smile. It was all bad. And then I called Terrence later, told us right left. That may awards, right? They went really well. We did a couple of sketches that I wrote this year. Were awesome. The one with dean Thomas, as Steven a smith, it's on my Instagram at Twitter, and then we had aljamain as like Adele saying me, me. And then we had me to take a home shopping network. So my daughter, I put my wife and daughter and right away, my daughter doesn't want to do the red carpet, 'cause she's like woke up from her nap. So she's like, no, no, I get away. She just like, she's crying. It was a picture of that was pretty damn funny. But then she meets Mackenzie burns kid, right? McKenzie there and they hit it off immediately. Like they have the dancing and running around and Mackenzie burn is like the sweetest person ever. We're talking. And I felt bad for like the 400 jokes I made about her fake accent and missing weight. Like, she's been who I am. And I want to be like, hey,.

And by the way, the award show, I said it's Friday. And I wrote some really good sketches here, one with dean Thomas that you're gonna love. I know you guys are gonna laugh your ass off. I want Misha Tate, who's a really good sport. By the way, and then one with Al domain Sterling. So they come out this week. I mean, one person to boxing ring inspires a Tyson very inspired a lot of people. One guy at a boxing ring. You look at what he did versus like the person who cures diseases. And you're like, well, that part. But at the same time, you never know who you're affecting. So I don't want to diminish what he's accomplished. But I hear you, though. There's definitely that. Now, something else that's going on. So Jon Jones is that another one is the other big name in MMA Conor McGregor. Have you ever heard his tweets so as of late? Again, what's that about? So Ali Abdul Aziz, who I hung out with last week he came to the comedy show. And I made fun of him left and right from the stage because I did a show for the UFC where fighters were telling jokes and I was opening it and closing it. We had Chael and Henry and dean Thomas and a great and Ali Abdul Aziz was one of the people that came because and you know, you hang out with a guy. He's a real nice guy. And very respectful, very sweet. And then he gets on Twitter sometimes and you're like, who is this person? That was a lot of people. A lot of people like, there's this Twitter personas and regular episodes. But Brian, who Gordon Ryan, yeah. So Conor McGregor says when you die, I celebrate. I was thinking about this. Like, in other sports, they don't have this. I mean, even in football, you know, you get two guys that don't like each other. There's shit talking, but it's not like I want to celebrate your death. Yeah. Man, so I guess basically Conor McGregor tweeted out, where's Khabib shit in his pants medal? He needed this for shit ten rows back. I guess that's when something went on. He goes, then I'll leave out your drinking again, boy. He take your soul, but never give it back, punk pitch. So then Connor writes, is there inbreeding in Dagestan? He actually like asset as a question..

"Michael Richards before he got busted with that whole thing, you know, he used to do it all the time. And I would say 6 times out of 7. He would you bomb. Yeah. And then one time he would do pretty good. 'cause everyone's like, oh my God, am I gonna entrance? You know, but usually he would get up there and just struggle. And I'm like, yeah, because you don't deserve to be here right now. You don't deserve to be on that stage. You know, you didn't earn your place up there through stand up. And so it was always kind of a lot of fun watching him just fall face first down the mountain. You know? Right. You know, a 100%. So we did our show. I did the show at the laugh act and on. Yeah. I like comedy club last week. So basically, I was like, I pitched data idea of, let's do a comedy show where we have all hosted and closed it. So I'll bookend it do 20 up front on the back and then the time in between and we'll have fighters on, because people aren't going on fight pass, I want to see fighters. So I picked I picked kale Henry cejudo and dean Thomas. Those were those are the comments. And you've worked with all three before already. You've coached them up, haven't you? No, no. Dean I've seen do comedy plenty of times, so he's done you specifically coached up both Henry and dean and jail at one point. The only one that I worked with was Chael. Okay. Another huge Conor right now who's touring, I'm not sure she wants me to say that now who's killing it on the road. But a huge fighter. But Henry was the guy that me and Henry sat down and when we worked on his stuff, right? And I always liked and Henry's and Henry killed because he was nervous. Both him and jail were sweating. Like, chill out think of Henry a massage in the back..

"You must be 21 years or older if you have a gambling problem called one 800 gambler. And while I got you here, let's talk about the field of 68 media network where college basketball matters most. All year round. This is a digital media and podcast network that we've been building over the course of the last year. We have shows hosted by some of your favorite players, covering the program that they love the most. AJ guyton host the house of hoosier. Eric devendorf covers Syracuse on the scores table. Dan dicko hosts the Gonzaga bulldog broadcast. We have Florida's Patrick young, and dukes Andre Dawkins, and North Carolina shaman Williams, and Michigan Stu Douglas and Illinois dean Thomas list goes on and on and on. We have more than 30 shows right now. So to hit the links below and check them all out. And while you're at it, make sure that you go check out the field of 12 media network your home for college football. Well, you know, you know what, big John and John chaney, rest in peace to both of them. They never had to deal with name image likeness. And that's going to listen. That gets a lot more gray hair, doesn't it? Oh, it does. It does because you have competition. You know, you have overtime league. You have the G league, you know, you have overseas. You have more competition, but then I owe helps us kind of fight a little bit, you know? I think it helps you guys. I do think it helps Memphis more than a lot of other programs because again the backing that you have in that city with the program is amazing. Not every city has that and, you know, everybody thinks FedEx is just gonna drop like a couple million on every kid. They do. That's what everybody's saying. So you know what's so weird, Jeff, is I haven't had to use NIO to sign one kid yet. Really? No kids made that the deciding factor. Every kid has just chosen our staff. You know, but it's still for us. The NIO is still kind of in my mind, still helps college basketball for guys to be able to come on campus. Get on campus and feel comfortable saying that with my name everything like this, I can at least make something instead of not making anything at all. Yeah, I mean, listen, again, what people don't understand is what you can sell is two NBA players who have played at the highest level and a coach who's been in the NBA for 30 years. So, but it will get to a point where you'll have to in order to beat somebody for a player and I will be a factor. You know that. I'm sure eventually I'm sure eventually it will be. Yeah. You sure eventually it will be right now. It has not been the case. All right, so let's get to your team this year a little bit. And again, a lot of roster turnover. No different than a lot of other teams, but man, it's hard to keep up, right? You got transfers leaving transfers coming in. Good players coming back. But I think let's start with the two reclassified freshmen because they're what has put you in a spotlight right now that everybody is going to look at you. And I think I had you in the top 25 ish prior to them arriving. But Kevin Durant and imani Bates can be different makers..

"It's me, Chael Sonnen, Henry cejudo, and dean Thomas are all doing a special. Meanwhile, are you writing jokes for these guys as well? If they asked me to, I have not so far. I think Henry wants to go over some stuff, you know? I'm writing for someone else, a huge a list fighter who's doing a show and I'm helping him with that. But I mean, it's all his stuff. It's not like I'm writing. It's not like people think when you're writing or someone, you write a bunch of jokes, you go, here you go. You know? I mean, that's not usually how I write. He's sitting down with somebody. They're telling me a story that the stuff and I'm just saying, oh, here's a you could punch it up here over there, you know. Yeah. Because that's what we do. We just look for the joke. Yeah. When you look for the right turns and surprises. I mean, you have to have a dream kind of voice where you could even have someone just come up with like, here's some jokes for you. You know, like, that's like, and maybe like a danger field probably could have done that. But I think he was a great joke right. I remember, I think Harry basil was telling me he would call him like three in the morning and to go to run jokes by him, you know? I just had my wife sometimes. Like, I'll wake her up, tell her jokes. And if she laughs, I know it's like a joke because she's so pissy for doing that. Yeah. Anyway, but yeah, so my daughter is now we had a good time. We had a really good time. So what have you been up to? What's going on in the life of Bill dawes? Oh, man, you know. I have a little baby, but she's useless right now. She just kind of sits around..
