"We know more bad choices for my like enough about me. This team is just fat. They're really they're really really bad. They can't they can't block. They can't play defense. There's like true. I sorta like to breitbart on the team. I really shouldn't say to. There's a few bright spots on the team but other than that it's just looking at the pass rush is Big fan did any kind of pressure and when they did it was because being home really good calling up really did played really plays on defense. Unlike the first half which was just a bunch of miss assignments mismanagement and miscommunication. They just cannot run on coverage. Good there's too many times too many times. Tom brady easy. Throw down the team. Because because they keep miscommunicated on zone covered like are we allow sold many twenty plus yard game because of the miscommunication zone. Something they've been doing. Two thousand nineteen and offic line is just jake matthews and chris lynch from trying their hardest to help matt ryan not die. One artist nickel understand. That team is not going to be. We don't have their entry. We do not have their off line. Why you've seen trying to run the ball up little. I do not know. I don't know why you don't know how to use one of the best tight end prospect. I'd ever seen in my life dropping out for because you wanted to use them so you're dropping that for you wanna use them and then you don't use them you don't even know how The game was lost on thirty one when they ran the ball up a little and got blown up not even the punk or the promos off warning. Kershope cut honestly. You can't be an integral on like that. But i don't know thank you thank you thank you thank you for your time. I appreciate it. Let's try to win next week. thank you for calling and i hope it getting all that off your chest a little bit because he did sound really sundeep w and i understand because honestly everything that he said is pretty much true and it is. I mean disappointing. As the words. That i keep coming back to It's it is disappointing. i think that you know he did touch on something that we haven't really gotten to yet today and Wallets two things of the lack of pass rush. Because i feel like we were duped in the first preseason fame without and then Really under utilizing kyle pits. Which is it's my opinion that he's being underutilized. But yet those. I thought were to really good points. Like in his point about when they are able to get home. It's because he is the son kind of you know creative stunt but then it. What's happening the rest of the time you know i will say for dean pees the defense one of the reasons i think the zone has looked at and he's right that the zone defense has looked godawful at times. Lou one of the reasons dean pees likes to show one coverage and then at the snap guys have to get into a different coverage to try in. They're trying to confuse. The receivers are trying to confuse. The quarterback obviously is not gonna work against tom brady. But when you've got a bunch of guys who are experienced in this defensive scheme that could be attributing to them. Not being in places are they need to be. Because they're they're trying to execute a very complicated defense What ps likes to run so Yeah you know. I can't argue with a lot of what he said. The pass rush also say this the first two opponents both had like really really good offensive. Line's the eagles. I think our underrated in that regard They lost jason peters but they had a left tackle in the wing suit as an absolute monster. A man who's playing really well and the the bucks have one of the best offensive lines in football So you know it's they. They do a good job of stopping the pass rush for good teams. Not even dimension the falcons who obviously lacking in that's apartment very true And then yeah. I guess that we haven't really talked about the punter either go we've got a punch or competition in atlanta then. The heat is on a shake punts. Nfl one hundred percent agree with that. And yes one hundred percents. So and also i would like to see more pets You know why'd you drop in for the role. If you're not planning to use have like you must have wanted to use them. So why don't you. And i think that that is a fair question. It is and he did have seventy three yards on sunday. I think. I think that will improve and i think against the giants on sunday. That could be a one of his first big games because of their their secondary. We'll see that that's going to be a very interesting match up to watch when we play the giants on sunday All right on that note. We've got five more voicemails to go. You guys have given us a ton to work with their a lot of fun as last time but before we get into this next batch. We're gonna take a quick break. We'll be right back. Athletes need their equipment to succeed. Lebron without shoes or serena without a racket is a troubling thing to imagine..

"It's terrifying <Speech_Male> matchup. We <Speech_Male> most people came <Speech_Male> into this year. Knowing <Speech_Male> tampa bay was <Speech_Male> likely gonna win. Nfc <Speech_Male> south barring <Speech_Male> any <Speech_Male> surprising. Major <Speech_Male> injuries <Speech_Male> And right <Speech_Male> now this just <Speech_Male> does not look like <Speech_Male> a good matchup for <Speech_Male> the falcons. So how's this <Speech_Male> gonna play out. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I think it's going to look <Speech_Male> a lot like last week. <Speech_Male> Unfortunately <Speech_Male> i <Speech_Male> think the falcons <Speech_Male> will have a little <Speech_Male> bit more success. <Speech_Male> The <Speech_Male> the reality <Speech_Male> is <Speech_Male> Guys like jalen <Speech_Male> mayfield and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> hennessy. <Speech_Male> They're gonna be overwhelmed <Speech_Male> again. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> hopefully <Speech_Male> the falcons <Speech_Male> could get the run game <Speech_Male> going but again. This is <Speech_Male> a top defense <Speech_Male> against the run. <Speech_Male> If they can't get <Speech_Male> the run game going and <Speech_Male> they've got to settle in on <Speech_Male> the past. It is going <Speech_Male> to be a long <Speech_Male> afternoon. <Speech_Male> For the falcons on <Speech_Male> offense <Speech_Male> and defense. <Speech_Male> Yeah <Speech_Male> i don't see them slowing <Speech_Male> down tampa bay. <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> have a lot of hope over <Speech_Male> long term. For <Speech_Male> what the falcons wanna <Speech_Male> do on. Defense with <Speech_Male> dean pees attacking <Speech_Male> style. <Speech_Male> But tom <Speech_Male> brady's is of quarterback <Speech_Male> that can <Speech_Male> tear apart. You <Speech_Male> know any <Speech_Male> defense. That has weak <Speech_Male> links. And the falcons <Speech_Male> have several weak <Speech_Male> links on this defense <Speech_Male> most <Speech_Male> notably again <Speech_Male> the defensive line <Silence> so <Speech_Male> as <Speech_Male> for how i see this playing <Speech_Male> out. Yeah <Speech_Male> not great. Adult <Speech_Male> light predicting blowouts <Speech_Male> It's <Speech_Male> it makes me uncomfortable. <Speech_Male> As a falcons fan <Speech_Male> someone wants <Speech_Male> to see this team succeed. <Speech_Male> But i'll <Speech_Male> be honest. I think <Speech_Male> tampa bay <Speech_Male> wins <Speech_Male> in resounding <Speech_Male> fashion <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> with the reservation. <Speech_Male> That again <Speech_Male> games can always go <Speech_Male> off script when you're talking <Speech_Music_Male> about division games <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> but i'm thinking the <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> tampa bay bucks win <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> this one thirty five to <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> ten so <Speech_Music_Male> you can throw <Speech_Music_Male> all the shade at me. "I think when you have an organization go out and spend like that you have to be like one hundred percent. Sure if you're mcveigh that that your guy that that's the guy you can envision execute everything within your offense and so far. It's not like chicago's defensive. Right there a defense. That is certainly should be above average. Although i think we questioned the secondary a little bit and that you needed to attack them and that was the perfect game plan but this wasn't like some gist civic events. No not at all and when you look at the rams. I think what was interesting. In the telecast elmich goes and chris. Collins repeatedly talked about the relationship that sean mcvay had with jared goff we're kind of i'm going to paraphrase. You're dragging along a little bit and serve as a mentor to coach him up whereas once they brought in matthew stafford mcveigh's been pretty open about saying like you mentioned kindred spirits the two of them finish each other's sentences and they see each other more as peers than anything else knowing how young. Sean mcveigh is. And if that's the case with things are going well. The relationship is always going to be outstanding. You wonder how those two will handle their first bit of adversity. If they happen to struggle to see the game the exact same way yet and there's no doubt about it but i think that relationship is solid. They do see the game pretty much. The same way you even saw that touchdown pass to woods to end the game. Basically and mcveigh's the first guy out there. He's like on the field. He's just bump and his tapping helmets. That wasn't something we we typically saw last year. So that bond seems to be much stronger. Now to mcveigh's credit you went the pc route and said the reason a guy like stafford is willing to come here because golf built this thing up and proved that could work so he he. He's handled that situation. I think quite well. Hey i mean the reality of it is If mcveigh was this quarterback respiratory believe in be less need. They're still the organization that if they had doubts. Jared goff probably shouldn't have a check for more than one hundred million. But you want to see everybody get paid and jared goff is found a landing spot will be not one that soft in detroit where. I'm sure he'll figure things out. Paint two quarterbacks that i wanted to highlight real quick since we touched on the texans at the top. I did have david. Kelly written down. You love to see a guy who's been a football lifer get that first win and we'll see if they're able to handle prosperity but one is mentioned teddy bridgewater holly contested battle. In denver. bridgewater goes out there and take the job he puts forth. Fourth-highest highest completion percentage in the first half in denver broncos history which now has mentioned amongst the grates there in peyton manning and john elway and of course your beloved florida state seminoles. Maybe the only bright spot for florida state over the weekend jameis winston five touchdown passes in his new orleans. Saints starting debut you have to like with teddy bridgewater brought to that game. I mean it's all about getting the ball out on time lang within the offense and getting the ball accurately to his receivers and and that's what he didn't. Fourteen percent above expectation is completion percent and the one thing that was great to see was not a ton of dink dunking eight point. Four intended air yards per pass so he was efficient sad though to see one of his weapons. Jerry judy go down. Although i think when we saw it live unfold as he's out for the season they're saying the mic came back. It's just a high ankle sprain now. Those can take multiple weeks right. Probably even maybe a month but it was better than alternative of missing the season jameis winston. Obviously a big game for new orleans. They wanted that For that area. And so i thought he was fantastic. Game pushed the ball. Downfield gives you a little bit different of a look compared to what drew brees was. Completion percentage five percent above expectation So i thought he managed that game quite well. Got some help from alvin. Kamara didn't make the costly mistakes in the one time that he did the zebras bail them out a little bit with the roughing the passer. So i thought both quarterbacks were fantastic this weekend. Anything else you wanted to touch on before we change gears and go from sweet to sour. No i think we've done enough ass kissing at this point. Let's get into the all right. Let's try and bring teams down from their high horses. I'm gonna give you first honors here out of this box. I thought it was. Arthur smith right scoreboard wasn't pretty obviously. Do wanna dig into a little bit more of that game a little bit here but on the surface what i watched was arthur smith struggled to be a head coach and that is a big transition going from a guy who just calls plays and wants to plays dine like you know. Let that go janelle the rest but poor decision making a lot of areas extremely defensive old school minded in both play calling in decision making their down at twenty two to six at one point and and they're like punting around midfield just very weird you could tell his first game as head coach and so matt ryan struggled. Completion percentage nine percent below expectation. That's really tough to do. When you have the third lowest intended air yards of the week. So you can't not push the ball downfield and be inaccurate at the same time. Just a terrible combination. We knew there was some problem areas of this team in in. You're hoping that they could disguise. Camouflage them a little bit but the line was a question mark coming into the season they lost a starter right before the game. Matt ryan was pressure on forty one percent of its drawbacks. The line didn't create much room in the ground game. The defense was a big question. Mark coming into the season we thought dean pees would improve them but he does running very difficult scheme. So if you look at some of the data that is surrounding dean pees and how his defenses do year one in early on in year one. They tend to struggle just a little bit. And that's kind of what we on the surface here but do wanna dig back into that game a little bit more in depth after i'm curious to get your takeaway because normally stats for teams. That are chasing. The kind of devastate. The falcons did for the better part of the entire afternoon at least have the ability to pad the stats sheet in the third and fourth quarters when they're just chucking it around that didn't appear to be the case for atlanta so. I'm not sure if that's a harbinger of things to come and you mentioned matt ryan of his struggles finished with an eighteen. Qbr twenty one of thirty five one hundred sixty four yards and then. I think you're going to get a number of people who are going to dig into the stats and go look. Here's how matt ryan's perform his career with julio jones. Here's matt ryan has performed his career without julio jones. So we'll see what kind of week one to week to improvement. Arthur smith can make as a head coach. I'll go on the other side of the ball..

"We'll be starting this year We've never really seen him. Play at a high level and gel mayfield are round. Pick is out there at left guard And honestly the eagles. I think have incredible depth on the defensive line. It's the area where i think that. If they're going to disrupt the falcons offense it's going to be in the trenches and honestly eagles fans you have a lot to be proud of that defensive. Line is concerned and and let's talk about the guy that Eagles edge. Rushers and guys like fletcher cox and j von hargrave. We're going to be are going to be trying to stiff down in the backfield. And that's matt ryan. Where is he now in his career. He has been around for a long time. The numbers still look good from him. Is he still you know. Where does he rank for. You among among nfl quarterbacks right now is he still a top ten guy for you as he atop twelve guy. Where do you have matt ryan right now in the nfl. I think with ryan we know who he is from a fiscal standpoint. He is running. Quarterback is not a guy that's gonna handle the pocket we know that. But we've seen when you put matt ryan in the right kind of offense like we saw between two thousand sixteen in two thousand eighteen. He can absolutely tear it up especially in the intermediate Part of the field were his. Accuracy is just absolutely phenomenal. And that's what excites me about. Arthur smith is he is bringing back that type of offense to atlanta the one that call shanahan ran here in two thousand fifteen in two thousand sixteen i think ryan could accelerate that As far as the physical physical skills. I don't think there's been a big decline. I think ryan is still capable of performing a high level. Obviously really. We're in the era of really great quarterbacks. But i do think ryan is right there in the top ten if he's putting the right system if you put the right pieces around him and i think they do have that and they they have the right guy. Head coach to make that happen You mentioned calvary as as a number one. And i think if you ask most eagles fans i don't i don't know that they would have. They would have said that off off the top. I mean what makes ridley so good. I mean wh how has he developed over these last years especially with julio jones there so that now he can supplant julio jones at number one and then we'll how does the rest of the receiver core shakeout right now really we're really stands out as wide receiver one as his ability to run routes. He is just a phenomenal route runner. Which was you know where things coming out of college that he was really talented for. He's not a big physical receiver. Julio jones was but he is just such precise route runner in able to create separation. And he's been doing that really since day. One here in atlanta and i think that's what it makes him a true top guy as far as the rest of the wide receivers russell gauge a six round. Pick from you know that same. Two thousand eighteen glass has really emerged you know. He had over seven yards receiving last year with. Julio jones still on the team i think he's poised for another big year in what is essentially a free agent audition for other teams potentially He has his a little bit of a different receiver more of a slot guy but incredibly dynamic but passed him honestly. The falcons have some depth issues at wide receiver. They need really engaged to stay healthy. That said arthur smith is probably going to be running an offense with lot of two tight ends one running back in the backfield. So really you're going to be seeing mainly to wide receivers on the field for the majority of the time but the wide receiver draft is questionable. Once you get past the top guys. So let's flip the script here a little bit and let's talk about The falcons defense against the eagles offense and you know it's the sequels offense. David is kind of a question mark because it all comes down to the play of the quarterback we. We don't really know what we're going to get out of jalen hurts this year. He showed some things last year and obviously he also showed in a couple of games. That there's a there's a lot of work to do. As as the falcons defense is concerned as far as how you game plan for jalen hurts. What are you expecting to see from him on sunday. Well obviously the athleticism stands out. And that's something that in the past. Has really haunted falcons defenses. And that's the one thing i think dean pees is going to be really mindful of. Do you contain this quarterback. How'd you get him off the mark but also how can you get to him. Take him down You know especially on third downs. He's a is defensive coordinator loves to blitz. He loves to put pressure on the quarterback But the flipside of that is if you put that pressure. And you can't bring that quarterback down and if you're facing an athletic quarterback that can make a big plays with his legs. You can pay a very big penalty for that. So i think there's gonna be a very delicate balancing act and you know the flip side of this is dean is this is his first game with this atlanta personnel. And these are guys that have not played together in the preseason. The most part guys like dan jones both starting safeties. Greg jarrett haven't even seen the field in the preseason So there could be some foibles here with the defense as they try to contain. Someone like hurts. Yeah and and i know it reminds me a lot of jim. Johnson kneeled eagles defensive coordinator liking it. Just love to blitz for from all over the. And i just where is the strength of this falcons defense like if you're the eagles where he. What are you staying away from on on sunday afternoon as as you face a falcons defense under a new defensive coordinator that does bring the blitz quite a bit. Yeah this is a defense. That's a work in progress. The best position group right. now i would say Inside linebackers jones is one of the best coverage linebackers and league. Foyer lucon took a major step forward last year and even the backup michael walker. Our draft pick from last year has shown to be a very good all around linebacker. So that's the strongest position group. Honestly i think where you're probably gonna find the the most weakness right now is in the cornerbacks. Aj terrell i think is going to take a step forward in your to be become a very good corner but pass him. There's there's a question marks. And i know the eagles a lot of young but very fast wide receivers and i think there's a paper matchup from them yet and one of the guys that we're going to be keeping a real close i on devante smith and i think i think in this game. We're going to be seeing the two favorites for offensive rookie of the year. In devante smith and kyle pits. Because you know they they just come out of college both looking like such polished professionals already and we haven't seen much of devante smith here in the preseason because he hasn't really played all that much he missed the beginning of training camp with with a minor knee injury and has has been perfectly fine since then and a little bit of action. We did see him in a seemed like he was able to get really good separation route runner and he has kind of i think talked about calvin comparing himself And and what he wants to do to the type of player calvin ridley as he wants to be like somebody who's known as a great route runner so if you're looking if you're looking at the at the eagles wide receiver core obviously a lot of question marks but you know..

"And i'm sure dean pees knows that he he's he's not new to this game So there will be some mix of trying to confuse. The offensive line is dean pees clarified. You're really trying to fuse. The guys in the trenches as to whether the arte you make sure you can get those blitz and make them effective in really for the quarterback. I think they're going to try to repeatedly get pressure on him without exposing themselves to the big run. And it's gonna be it's gonna be a tall ask and this is going to put a lot on both foyer and dion jones to be able to cover that space where hurts get out the space and do some damage with his legs but the weapons philadelphia has some good weapons as well at least weapons with potential. The tight end position in the very similar fashion. They've got two guys. That are quality. Tight ends zakar veteran. You know a little bit of a dip last year but man. This guy has been one of the best receiving tight ends for his time in league dallas. Who when they drafted him back in two thousand eighteen a lot of people five. Okay this is gonna be to take over for arts and a few years. It's kind of a lot of people thought the eagles we're gonna move on from this year. The fact that kept him. It's kind of surprising. You've gotta wonder if that makes irks. Dallas got a little bit. Who thought he was going to emerge as tight in one in two thousand twenty one. This will be his fourth season. This is a contract year for him and remains to be seen what they do you know the will they give a contract extension to erz who is gonna turn thirty one this year Or will they finally sort of commit to making the future at the tight end position regardless they have both of them right now. They're both really good weapons at the time that position. Now receiver the smith who is alabama we all know how good alabama sears tend to be their first round pick this year. We don't expect from him except that. Obviously he's incredibly talented a slight smaller guy as far as his stature. You know he's he's tall enough. But one hundred seventy five pounds. Six one he's Hopefully the wind doesn't blow him off the field but again another sort of really big investment for the eagles to try to build this offense. We'll see how that pans out and again rookie. Wide receiver tend to struggle in your one. Even julio jones didn't have a big season initially so this is something to watch what he can do his in his very first. Nfl game now on the other side of smith is yet another first round first round. Pardon me first. Round wide receiver in jalen regular. It was their first round. Pick from twenty twenty out of. Tcu funny enough. He's shorter but weighs more. He's five foot eleven hundred ninety five pounds Understandable he had a struggle as a rookie. I think they're expecting him to take a leap forward this year and again another fast receiver guy that could potentially stretch the falcons defense on sunday as long as these guys. Are you ready to go. And you know they've got. They've also got a quiz watkins at the slot. Who is again another fast receiver. A little bit slight. Six two hundred ninety pounds remains to be seen if he's ready to also take a step forwards he was drafted again in two thousand twenty so the eagles have three really fast receivers all of whom were drafted either last year this year. And if you're starting a offense with a new quarterback in your giving him weapons like this that could be a challenge in the first game you know. These guys don't have a lot of time on the field together. They don't have the timing down. In the way that matt ryan would with russel gauge with calvin ridley and that could cause some issues for their offense. Now you know these are fast guys so they could potentially just win on pure athleticism so if you look at a guy like aj terrell and fabien moreau on the outside and then isaiah oliver in the slot. Terrell everyone has big expectations for. I think he's going to play well in this game I think he's going up against a top notch receiver from a physical standpoint but terrell has shown he can do that. you know. Terrell has had to cover calvin ridley camping. That's going to have prepared him. Well monroe think is you know equality enough corner. We'll see how he matches up either. Against smith or against regular Or walk ins. in obviously isaiah. Oliver stands to be the the issue of the these three corners in could be the one. That's a little bit more concerning. So this is a matchup almost sees a push where there is some potential for the eagles Lot of people have these receivers sort of all go off as really young receivers with very little real game time with With hurts But you know this is where the first game can be very unpredictable. the the philadelphia eagles have running back mile sanders. And you know. He's he's a quality runner really struggled as a receiver The past several years. So he's not going to offer a ton in the receiving game son with the major concerns there and honestly pf has ingredient like fifty fourth of seventy so he's not like this absolutely dominant running back. He's he's decent enough and they've got some faith in him that he can take another step forward here in his third year in. Obviously you know you look at the back end of the balkans defense and you've got arguably the strongest position group on the defense is the the linebackers you know dion jones voyeur lucan and mike walker is a backup behind them. Think these guys are going to do really well against Players like sanders and maybe even coverage against some tight ends like erz goddard in the safety position drawn harmon. Eric harris their veterans. They've been here before. I think that will help. Neither guys actually like really super inspiring their decent enough players think harmon is the better of the two..

It's dave walker. We're looking at the falcons versus eagles key matchups. And of course our prediction going into this first game the two thousand twenty one nfl season. I games in atlanta. This should be interesting all right. Let's talk about the eagles offense this one again. Let's start in the trenches. The eagles lost their longtime stalwart left. Tackle jason peters. He went to a different team but they sort of stumbled into what could potentially be a good starting left tackle for them for the future in jordan lada. He came in last year as a twenty eight seventh round draft. Pick originally drafted to play on the defensive side of the ball and last year really finish the year strong at left tackle and has given them a lot of hope that he could be the for their future. There so you know. I don't want to crown him yet. As a great left tackle but the potential looks like it's there at minimum. He played well twenty twenty. This could be where the falcons could try to explain a little bit. He's a bigger guy. three hundred forty six pounds according to pf some. Maybe dante tried to use his speed to get around him That remains to be seen now in on the other side lane johnson. It feels like he's been league forever. he was. He came out in two thousand thirteen. Really top notch right. Tackle for most of his time in the league Little bit of dip in performance last year some injuries and whatnot obviously hampered him and kept him out for the back half of the season but again equality right tackle. Hopefully he's back to health if you're an eagles fan and then on the inside brandon brooks at right guard Right now it's unclear. He missed all of twenty twenty It's unclear if he's gonna be ready to go for this game. He was one of the players on the injury report. If they have a backup there again that could be a spot. That the falcons target with someone like grady jarrett with bullard to try to get some interior. Push into to disrupt hurts. And of course we know that dean pees likes to blitz he likes that a gap blitz especially with the linebackers and safeties. That could be an area where they try to attack up the middle of this offensive line. Jason kelsey what can you say about this guy. He's been a phenomenal center first entire career. But he's almost thirty four years old. Now alex mack played his mid thirty s or the high level Kelsey did see a little bit different performance last year. How much of that was the coaching staff. Probably enough that you know. I would feel comfortable saying kelsey still equality starter but this again is something to keep an eye on. I do think he's probably going to return to form this year they do. Have i think a better offensive minded coach heading the team. Now we'll see if it makes the difference but kelsey is has been for almost this entire career one the best centers in the league and then it left guard. isaac somali. He has a player that again. Decent enough not necessarily going to blow your socks off miss some time as well last year in you know we'll see if he's fully healthy so in the past the eagles had a really dominant offensive line. I think they have the potential to be that this year. But they need guys to be healthy like brooks kelsey like johnson. My father needs to continue that level of performance that he showed up at the end of last year. Maybe take a step forward But i think there are enough question marks here on the offensive line. Sort of like. What the falcons. except i. i think this is much better. Unit in the falcons are putting out right now. But they've got some age here. And i do think there are some opportunities for someone greg jarrett to disrupt the middle of that line. And really when we're talking about the falcons defensive line it's pretty much great jarrett and a bunch of guys. I do think. Jonathan bullard has the potential to be a decent player this year. He looked good in the preseason. Whether or not that carries forward came out in two thousand sixteen is a third round pick and he's been sort of just average although his pass rush grade doesn't indicate he can get to the quarterback according to pf app so we'll see if he can deliver on that here in atlanta So those are the guys. I'm gonna watch on the falcons defensive line. And of course you know the falcons outside linebackers. I do think a lot of people have said this. And i think there is reasonably optimistic. I think dante valor is going to have a bounceback season. What he did. Two years ago with the rams with aaron donald on the field. Well you aaron. Donald is a once in a lifetime. Talent but grady. Jarrett's are really good guy at pressuring up the middle in the way that aaron donald did i also think fowler is going to be schemed better under veteran defensive coordinator dean pees who i think is gonna be the big sort of Changing factor for the falcons defense this year. Now as for the guys on the opposite side of fowler. Right now it looks like it's going to be too we. ot mariner Potentially stephen means these are decent enough guys. I don't think either of these guys is going to be up there for eight or nine sacks maybe a handful of saxe between the two of them really the the wildcard here is data boo ogundipe. And what this fifth round draft pick can do. He's looked really good in camp. The falcons seemed to be really high on him. He was getting first team. Snaps in the preseason I'm not sure if he's going to play a lot or not. We'll see how that plays out but it looks like he has some potential. It'll be interesting to see how many snaps he gets once the actual game start. Let's talk about what the eagles have In talent outside of the trenches now jalen hurts to be clear was second to last. Npf grades in two thousand twenty now. He inherited a terrible situation with what happened with carson. Wentz in that whole fiasco The coaching staff. Obviously that they moved on from It sounds like philadelphia's really confident in what hurts is going to do this year. He is very quarterback. I think he's got the the athletic talent to be successful. But if you've watched any tape of hurts. He is just a half second behind on his reads in the nfl. That is a lifetime of difference. he regularly would hitch his passes where he had just that brief half the second quarter of second of hesitation and those hesitations or the difference between a completed pass interception in the nfl Now do i think he can overcome that. Yes absolutely will. He overcome that instantly as the starter in this first game of the season. I think that's a big question. Mark and dean pees is going to try the scheme up as much pressure as possible. Now this is where things could get. Dangerous for the falcons. If you try to go after hurts repeatedly He also has the ability to to move and you could get out into space and really caused some damage..

"That would. That's the first thing we see air. Kerstin play against ons. We got totally little bit. Yeah like any. Yeah yeah so. That is very interesting. I agree. I wanna see what techniques like and. I'm not sure because. Obviously i'm thin but i think probably came away more impressed with our depth that safety I think jalen hawkins enriching grant into action. They solve during preseason. Look great I it's promising going forward. Considering how young both players are absolutely and looking at how the falcons defense matches up. It's really kind of a wild card. How the eagles will be. We don't know how good devante smith will be. that will be. Obviously one of the main know sort of turning points in this game can't afford to smith be the weapon that the eagles have lacked at wide receiver for the past several years. Jalen ray did not pan out the way they. He was not took them over. Justin jefferson. yeah yeah and you know. My dynasty team is certainly hoping that jalen regular eventually turned into something that is. They're hoping obviously for a lot from devante smith. I'm sure they're hoping for something from jalen ray gore but the big weapon on that offense is the tight ends. They're kind of similar to the falcons. In that way. Right they have zakar. It's they have dallas. Got her a very potent too tight end attack so odd donald to you with this one. How do you think the falcons are going to match up in terms of coverage against this eagles passing game. I definitely think that dean pees will will try to speed up the clock against Against jalen hurts because you know jalen hurts someone who we've seen last year. He had his moments Definitely after taking over for carson wentz but he also had some moments where he clearly looked like a rookie and looked like For whom the moment was you know slightly too big. So i definitely think i liked that. We're going up against hurts right away. Early on in the season I don't think you know he's really proven quite yet and This is just something where i feel like the pressure. The dean pees brings to try and speed things up for that could force mental into a few mistakes because her. This are hurts. This is still someone who probably still in his mind. How last season he was pulled through was benched. His completion percentage wasn't really that high. His your passing numbers his rushing numbers were great but his his passing numbers weren't really all there. So you know. I definitely think that that's something where you can kind of take advantage of it mentally in going up against Against someone so young and still so little bit raw in his nfl career. Definitely not something. You'll be able to do very much of next week against tom. Brady was the exact of all of that. But yeah i definitely i definitely think that dean pees will he's gonna he's gonna be blitz happy all season but i think he may bring the heat a little more in this game than what we'll see in future games against against non young quarterbacks. Yeah yeah and dave is going gonna go to you with this one You know jalen hurts. Is known more for his rushing ability. One of the best rushing quarterbacks in the nfl last year even in only a few game sample size how you think or how would you sort of try to limit his ability to run the ball because that was really where he had the most success. When you kind of get out of the pocket and use his legs would you take a blitz heavy approach which you use more spies and try to force him to throw the ball. I would just have grady jarrett's saddam. Yeah i like. Oh you can just sit on No i i would probably i would. I would think about having a spy. I think the thing with hurts is in my mind like i. I actually like jalen hurts. I think he can be a good. Nfl quarterback but i do think his instinct especially against the blitz. Happy defense is going to be to take off. And i think if you're gonna send the house every time out to try to force him into making a bad throw that's gonna work out for you occasionally might even work out For you enough to win the game. But he's also going to just take off a lot because he's confident in his legs and he should be vis a very good scrambling quarterback. I can't tweet about him in a funny way. Like can with matt ryan. Because it's actually yeah. Yeah so to me. Yeah you wanna have somebody who's got eyes on him pretty much all times because the very last thing you want to do is be so aggressive that you're giving hurts a chance to rip off fifteen. Twenty thirty yard runs in. Keep this thing moving. I don't think the eagles offense it as much as i like. Some of their playmakers is good enough to win this game on their own. Unless you just can't account for for herds taking off and running. So i would be a little bit cautious about that And i would save the you know the non stop. Endless blitzing for tom brady. Who is forty four years old and still hasn't had a cup of coffee recently. So yeah that's that's how i would play it. We'll we'll see how it goes. Maybe they'll just get after him. He'll get rattled and he won't take off but i very much doubt that. Yeah i mean he's gonna take off he's gonna take off a lot so if they're gonna blitz him and i don't think he was a bad idea necessarily but if they're gonna blitz him they need to have somebody like they're in casey survives the blitz because otherwise asking and i feel like i'm not saying just go zero blitz on every time i like the idea of bringing a fifth man and also leaving. Maybe leaving a dion jones as a spy just because john jones has the speed to keep up so even if even if jalen hurts kind of like you know runs away from it. You still have beyond jones right. They're closing at the angle. Yeah i like that. I mean. I think dion jones could be a really good sort of running quarterback a racer because he is faster than just about every quarterback. If not all quarterbacks even guys like justin fields and trae lance jones reportedly ran into the hi four threes at his pro day so i liked that strategy. That could be good. Eric how would you sort of try to to neutralize jalen hurts would you like to blitz as well or are you playing sitting back zone and trying to kind of contain and let him make mistakes as a passer. Did we loser now. You're going to give him a mixed back you know. I'm going to wake him. Be a traditional quarterback passer which he's probably not at that particular point in his development yet But i'm also gonna Throw some bodies. Our man The one thing that i do feel comfortable about with this defense go to because hers is the athleticism at linebacker. In case he does know the ball down at intakes off Having dion jones haven't awoken haven't even michael walker That's a nice trio of athletic linebackers. That i believe you know the if they need to chase him down they'll be able to get apple The one thing about jalen.

"And it's not like they're playing against a great team jacksonville to go on the road and it's also the urban meyer thing i said to you on a numbers game this morning like this just reminds me some of the stuff that urban meyer did in the off season the arrogance has a chief of staff for god's sakes there's somebody who has called a chief of staff that you have to go through to get urban meyer. This is very spurrier esque to me. That's what the oh malcolm. Gladwin blink thing. I just think they could be bad in a way that we think of the texans right now yeah. You're not the joe on the road in a national football league going on. The road is hard for actually their third straight road game. Their last two preseason games on the road as well there. You go yell. Do you think there's a chance at urban. Meyer doesn't finish the year. yes. I do do as well which would be more heart problems. He will look at that. Stress was too much in college. Where you're god right now. Now you have to answer to people but the other thing is his worst season was eight and three as i hear at bowling green. He won eighty eight percent is games. I mean he never lost it. Oh what happens. When he's two and nine he's never had to worry about an offensive line being bad what's that he doesn't he can't even come up with him. Life saw the prophet west gate who quits i. Urban meyer. mike palm from the nuts. Pam take shot number. Two fire was money. There all right brady number two number two for you. I am going with. The atlanta falcons radiant. I are sharing a brain and The atlanta falcons lost a number of close games last season that should adjust to the positive. And of course arthur smith comes in as the new head coach. And i think he's really going to give a boost to that. Offense struggled in the red zone. And i think kyle pits gives a big boost to that offense as well and we saw how arthur smith did with tight ends with tennessee. So i think that's all a positive but maybe the biggest coaching hire. They made dean pees as the defensive coordinator this guy. All he's done is coach for new england in baltimore. And he's been fantastic on the defensive side of the ball matt ryan by the way eleven and two straight up and against the spread and home openers and that second loss was last year. So i think matt ryan gets it together this year. And the falcons a lot of people and maybe yourself as well gill a lot of prognosticators out there that i respect expect. Good things out of the falcons this year and basically just a positive regression because they lost so many close games last season. I'm not completely on that boat. I think this is a really good spot for them. And this is also a fate of philadelphia. Yes jalen hurts has not been good. He's won one game in his career and it was one new orleans was on their third straight game on the road and they were starting a backup quarterback..

"Some hope that don't take fowler can bounce back after playing through essentially a high ankle spring and for all of the twenty twenty Which is really an indictment of the past coach in regime here in atlanta. But after that. Like the falcons. The the only other name i think philadelphia fans will be familiar with which you and i talked about On your podcast. Stephen manes who looks set to be the starter and also on the side of fowler. Junior a grady jared in these other guys you concerned about them potentially causing disruption and giving rookie quarterback jalen hurts a little bit of a hard time in the pocket. I think there is little bit concerned. Just because you know with guys being injured last year. It's been awhile. Since lane. Johnson and brandon graham played football You know this is the first time in my life is getting a chance to to full-blown start. And he has the confidence with a new coaching staff. Isaac say was banged up last year. Jason kelsey was banged up last year. So it's been a while since this whole unit has played together. And i don't even think it happened at all last year because jay speeders was still here so this is the first time you know. My lot is outside playing left tackle. This is the first time in a long time that the rest of the outlines been playing together because they barely played in the preseason. Because if jalen hurts wasn't playing they weren't playing which i'm totally okay with So i mean. I think there is a little just you know not in the rust off a little bit there and then just with a new coaching staff. I mean i know. Jeff scotland still. Here is one of the best offensive line coaches of all time. So i mean you have that in your back pocket to not really worry too much about you know scheming and everything but a new. A new coaching staff new play calls. I think there's definitely a bit of concern going into this just because of of so much turnover for this team from last year. Yeah so it's not completely unfounded. That jarrett could be disruptive in the middle of that line And certainly i would think dean pees who is very respected. Defensive coordinator offer his four hundred. Thirty years in the lead is is gonna try to bring pressure up the middle. Because that's where your you stand the best chance of. I think disrupting young quarterbacks. Getting them to move all right. So the offensive line Again i i feel like this is a quality offensive line if all the pieces come together if the injuries proved to not be a factor early on but really i wanted to start well offensive line because ultimately it's about the guy that they're protecting and that for the eagles now is jalen hurts. The philadelphia moved on from Longtime quarterback carson wentz. Who i think is generous to say had a difficult twenty twenty He has met a difficult eagles. Tenure honestly he was here for a good time not a longtime well put very well put And there was a lot of potential with wins. And i think from what we saw from hurts. He was put in a very difficult situation at the end of last year. Obviously With with everything going on with the coaching staff and he delivered at times. And i think there's some reason to be optimistic. What do you think about hurts as the heir apparent is the next. Qb one in philadelphia. I well let's take it all the way back to win. The eagles drafted jalen hurts in the second round of the nfl draft when he still had carson wentz coming off of The disgustingly dirty hit from today on cloudy in the playoffs. You know it was like okay. He'll bounce back from this. We'll get it going again and we'll have carson wentz back healthy then you draft quarterback in the second round and everybody in philadelphia and quite frankly in the nfl. Twitter space lost their minds during that virtual draft is roger. Goodell sat in his chair with his sweater on. And i was just like. What are we doing. Drafting a quarterback in the second round who has been one of the best college quarterbacks. We've seen in a long time in to very high octane. Successful college programs with alabama and oklahoma. I view jalen hurts is a guy to go to a team. That was still kind of looking for an answer at quarterback and not the eagles. I was not expecting him to be a philadelphia eagle and then You know as time went on it was one of those things where it just grew on me and it was. It was a situation where i kind of got brought back to when the eagles had donovan mcnabb and michael vick on this team and they were using both guys and it's kind of similar to what it sounds like your former guy. Kyle shanahan is trying to do in san francisco and have to kind of play books for two quarterbacks depending on situations in the game and i thought that was kind of the direction that the eagles were gonna go with they were gonna have you know carson wentz is set play books and they were going to have Jalen hurts set play books and kind of utilize their skill sets differently to different kinds of quarterbacks and quite frankly carson wentz i think mentally just wasn't able to to manage that and that's what we from The year in twenty twenty from him in jalen hurts steps in and going into the season with hurts at quarterback. There's four games of game tape on him outside of his college stuff. There's four nfl game tapes. So there's not much that teams can kind of dissect and dive into from jalen hurts the nfl level. He didn't play in. The preseason much had like ten snaps this preseason. So there's there's still so much unknown about him. And i think that's intriguing. If you're an eagles fan to just know that you can kind of go into the season in your opponents aren't gonna know much about your starting quarterback. There's not enough film on him to really key in on what he does well what he doesn't do well yet. Grim and to have a veteran offensive line like they do in front of him. I think is a huge benefit. They put a ton of speed around him at the skill positions from mile sanders. still being. Here you know you draft devante smith. We had report with at alabama heisman. Trophy winner as well. It's been a long time. Since the eagles about a heisman trophy winner on this team. You hope that you know jalen..

I love that you can make money. Losing tickets prop swap. It's where america buys and sells sports. Bets kramer falcons. Let's do it. let's go baby. Wow you have all the energy. We're gonna put the team on my back there. we go. We're going to get started with a classic. Case of our the falcons ready to regress positively this year shahnaz and twelve last year Going way way under their total of seven and a half. John this team under under expectation by three and a half wins. That is the worst right used pie fat. Come on you wanted to use it. They're use it. According to pie they under performed by three and a half wins which is the third worst underperformance since the merger sean since the merger but this team has snake bit and they find ways to lose They've they've found. Ways chargers vibes all the way. Back to shanahan your guy right like he brought losing to atlanta back then of course super bowl. They made the show You know that that that staunch offense that high powered offense to the cowboys needed to come back with miraculous. Onside kick last year. They didn't realize they can pull the ball and they lead at halftime in nine games. Now normally you win eighty percent of the game that you're leading at halftime since one thousand nine hundred seventy eight teams have had twenty percent less win rate in one score games however that following year. It's gone up to forty five percent so you would think because their own four and three point games to an eight in one score games. Mommy my glasses and lots of regression hair sean. This year we're back to seven and a half for the total minus one thirty five on the over plus one fifteen on the under division nine to one conference thirty. Two one super bowl is eighty to one playoffs. Yes plus one ninety no minus two forty key additions. We've talked a lot about it because We think he might be a gold jacket player. Kyle pets. i don't quite see it Mike davis coming in who i think there are people on two sides of this fancy. Thank you some plotting. Like inefficient runner. Or they see what he did when he got an opportunity last year. He's got a What would you say. A a upgrade at the offensive position the offense quarter coordinator slash head coach position with arthur smith They brought in some some edge. Help to me this This this team is all going to be about. If matt ryan has fallen off the cliff or not yet I certainly do think that. They're if i'm gonna you know i'm intrigued by the The nine to one long shots in this division intrigued. because i think there's some volatility at least i thought so. What do you think. Vince played above their talent last year. Actually didn't they were. There are fourteenth in de. Vito a interesting that they lost their defensive coordinator when they fired their head coach. Bring dean pees defensive coordinator who it seems like. Arthur smith friend higher which kind of brings up red flag. He was out of football in twenty twenty Dc coming out of retirement is scary for a defensive coordinator. Especially although i mean you know in tennessee in two thousand. Nineteen in two thousand. Eighteen is defensive coordinator. There were okay. I mean before that he had some good years in baltimore. Arthur smith should help the offense. Kyle pits greatest fantasy season ever. I don't see that. I'm not going to go against mike ditka. I think i think he's going to split the difference. I don't have a hot take on kyle pits. I don't think he's going to get that crazy. Ceiling puts mini dicta. Yeah who do you got. They weren't that bad in point differential. And kinda the to the pie tag factors in there reminding eighteen point differential for comparison. The browns point differential was minus eleven. It's the core piece of what which is why they just either. Regression going the other way negative progression ryan. They were the third healthiest team last year. And normally this falcons team deals with the shit. Ton of injuries are actually pretty lucky. Injury wise couldn't run the ball in the second half to kind of protect leads. They also got conservative when they had the lead where the whereas the bills still were thrown on first down when they had the lead Falcons kind of took their foot off the gas. Oh man it feels like the the factors are going to kind of balance out. And we're gonna get. We're gonna get this falcons team to like seven or eight wins which would be nice jump from four but still not this ceiling projection that That some people have them at. I mean honestly. I think you have to start You look at the fact. Also they had a tough schedule. last year. They had the toughest schedule according to the football outsiders according to this year. It's it's a middling Average schedule a sean. Have we talked about the schedule yet. This year no because it's silly second not travel. Yeah ten road games. Oh yeah and that's that's in road. That's one of the nuggets. I have because you know nine baby. They have nine actual road games because they're an nfc and then they have one of their home games counts for london so they're only seventeen games scheduled. There are only playing seven games in their stadium. That's that's a crazy bed schedule rick. How many times. We'll chick-fil-a be serving during falcons games. This year i shit i always. I forgot to look that on right. You got to find the primetime home games. It's probably only one or two and also like this team is is made of it but this team isn't exactly punting on on the team and they're not trying to weird john you know how much If matt ryan were to be released after the season do you know what his his dead money by a record..

"Is not strong enough to really hold up for four five six seconds in coverage you gotta do something else. Yes and i remember talking raheem morris and jeff phobic. last year. Once the coaching staff was or change was made they were dialing up pressure more and we saw the affected. Oh yeah. I think that dean pieces idea of. If you're not great at one thing and recall queen came from seattle where there were probably four hall of famers playing defense together. Yeah i can rely on those guys to make the game changing plates. They didn't have that in atlanta. And i think the dean pees saying we're gonna then make these guys productive with scheme you can do that. The steelers are really good defense and they also blitz a lot because they'd pressure the throw everybody off of what they want to do their rhythm and i think we saw the benefit of that in the first preseason and now it's only the preseason you can get burned playing that style of defense and it scares me a little bit because i do think that the there's a very high burn chance this is this defense as it's constructed right now you're putting a lot on your corners. You're also helping them in a sense. Because you're getting to the quarterback quicker. Yes if they can do as effectively as they did. In the first game this defense could be one of the true surprises across the nfl. This season yeah exactly right. I i've i've referred to him as potentially as a boomer bust defense where they're going to send eight guys and they're either gonna take down that quarterback fast or you're gonna see a toss for a touchdown they'll the league and fantasy one week and then be last the next week. Exactly the gives you twenty four points one day and they give five th the next of but many ways i think fans are ready for that is opposed to the as you mentioned dropping seven or eight coverage in hoping you can get that pressure in the front four but yeah in many ways i feel like this defense as a whole again as we were talking about is something to watch for in this preseason if for the reason than it may end up being the most entertaining part of the game was in the first preseason game and just seeing falcons fans like have fun watching the felt incredibly foreign it instead of hearing the weeping and gnashing teeth and hearing people sorta late talk about how great dean pisa's was was a nice nice change of pace all right so we'll any last final thoughts as we go into the second preseason game before we close out. Yeah i just want to. I want to see kyle pits. Yes please i just i wanna see out there. I wanna see what he looks like against. Nfl competition. I kind of don't feel like we're going to get that much of him I i get the sense. What i've heard is that him dressing in the first game was really more of just a procedural matter. They wanted him to go through the motions of suiting up for an nfl game It's it's really interesting. We used to get the whole schedule. The rundown of like the two hours before kickoff and they have everything detailed to to the minute. I mean it's like you know. Eleven fifty three special teams players. Go out for initial stretch. Eleven fifty seven receivers and running backs go out for stretch like Twelve o'clock whole teams. It's like very very regimented. So i'm sure they wanted him to go through that and get the feel but i wanna see him out there. I wanna see how. He connects with matt ryan. I just don't think we're going to get to too much of that. Because i think light quarter patterson they probably wanna keep him very close to the to the vest and then just just play better like i cut down cut down on penalties. That's one that's one real thing. Yes i know the refs they do this every year. The league stresses every type of penalty in in the preseason but they also they just need to play much more tight it play to the titian and if the rest of the competition in this case then don't give them the chance to call anything examined especially for these offense blyden. Gotta turn that around in this game. Because i think that there some momentum starting to build for aj mccarron and every single time. It seemed like he made a good play. It was just called back and it was hostile situation so those two giving kyle pits get get him to series. Get him off the field but throw the ball a lot to him in those two series. Just just clean up the penalties gusts. Yeah i think it is worth noting. That's the penalties is one of the main things. Arthur spent sort of took away from that game because as you noted that is you know you scratch scheme. Scratch all that stuff. That's the mental part of the game. That doesn't change from preseason yet to regular season so one hundred percent with you as for me. I'm with you man. I wanna see pits. I don't want to have to wait until you know for another three weeks to see this First round talent special talent potentially get on the field. But i suspect know we'll we'll see him like one or two plays and we're gonna. It's gonna like getting that first taste of a an exquisite dessert. They take it away from. It's like don't do that. I hope the first play of the game tile pits and wildcat formation. That would actually feel like they were trolling us. If that my god that would that actually would be something special. I don't even know how fans would react to. That's beyond all right so that is what we're looking forward to in this next. Preseason game guys. Obviously we'll have one more preseason game. We'll talk about that in the next week. That one is going to be critical for those blasts positions on the roster as it always is but will reminder listeners where they can find you. "It's refreshing to actually see coaching being plus because it seems like it seemed like for so many years with dan quinn that we were kind of like we had more talent than our coaching was sort of allowing and it was not showing through and it seems like maybe the opposite is true this year like i think a lot of people would would objectively look at this roster including us in say like this past russia's not good the group is really bad. It's gonna be really hard for this team to create pressure but they're somehow finding a way to do it through coaching. they're gonna scheme it up. They're going to do stuff. That might not work every week. You know i think dean pees system has limits particularly against really good really experienced offensive lines. But i think unlike dan quinn where it was like. It's going to be bad against good offensive lines and it's going to be bad against bad offensive lines. The falcons defense might be able to get something done against poor offensive lines. Which would help. Because there's not. there's a lot of bad offensive. Line's out there particularly. When you're the falcons in you're playing a fourth-place schedule so that's definitely something that could help them function particularly when they have a young secondary while it's going to take some time to get adjusted but and it's a bit the frustrating. Can you imagine if if this team had this coaching staff. Back in two thousand seventeen. If if you had arthur smith calling the plays by twenty eight and pees calling the plays defense like i have no doubt in my mind this would have been a super bowl unit especially specially offensively. Because you know the offense was what was really bogged down that urine. We saw what. Arthur smith did with that tennessee. Offense which in my opinion did not have as much talent as that balkans titas. Those falcons seems in twenty sixteen in two thousand seventeen. Had derrick henry. Aside right ryan. A is not as talented as matt ryan especially peak. Mvp matt ryan But yeah that's that's just that's just meese bowling right now. Yeah and i think i go ahead. Yeah go ahead. I was just gonna say have they mentioned 'cause obviously this is a new thing only have three preseason instead of four and usually that second to last is the starter game. Bram have they mentioned like At all like is this gonna be the starter game or is that next week or do they even have a stargate right. I mean i'm teams. We haven't heard much. I know some teams have sort of alluded to the fact that slurs have just threaten their starters a lot. Yeah she'll like it probably depends on the team. I think some teams are going to count use this as the starter. Game like the traditional third. Preseason game might just be the second one now other ones might make a third one because while there's no fourth preseason game there is like a week off that week like there's kind of like no game that week no nothing you kind of prepare for this season so unlike before it was like fourth preseason game and then you play the next week. It's like third preseason game then week off then you play so they could very well still use third preseason game as like the star game and then just everyone's going to rest so we'll see. I'm not really sure. I think to starter will play at least a little bit on saturday. At least a series or two. I don't know it'll be the whole like half so that might not ever. That might not be thing anymore. You know with only three preseason games. So we'll see but i'm interested in seeing that i mean i'm just interested in seeing some of these new starters i mean i think we'll see a little bit of them like fabian. Moreau's guy that. I really wanna see dante fowler. You know can. He look somewhat competent. This year safeties. Yeah yeah doron. We had to start to new starting state safeties. Yeah usually a like we. Just one in that guy would leave so we get another one later on but the new died already couple years in now. It's literally to new starting safety so yes and to echo. What you guys said just like enough offensive line ability that we can evaluate the running backs and evaluate the receivers like the core back just just like a baseline level of competence that they can frigging get the ball out and get it out of the backfield without being tackled. I mean like. I just had to be like well. There's three guys in. The backfield with jane hawkins. So you know. He's not going anywhere but it's like you can't do anything about that so please please. Guys like put. Braveheart tackles line of scrimmage. Running back should be dealing with that now. Now we need to. We need to get better there. And i think they will be better. It'd be hard to be worse. So we'll see how that goes but on that note guys reminder we will be back for another live play by play. Show for saturday's game. We'll be starting once again at six thirty seven o'clock kick-off so please do join us for that. We had a lot of fun on friday. I believe to be able to make it. So i will have. I will be able to okay. We'll we'll get. We'll get evan here. Yeah we're gonna have a. We'll have a good time once again break in that game down discussing all of the action and having a good time doing even if the game itself is terrible which there's a solid shot today will once again be pretty terrible so that's preseason football for you but until then guys wanna thank my co hosts and remind you guys to subscribe please and also check out the patriotic.

"And i think the secondary will reflect that And that's you know when you've had this type of offense if they can truly click at a high level like we've seen them do before. I think defenses. Good enough to win you a lot of games. I've seen what has been doing. Like i said you know it's preseason. Don't get too excited. But there's a lot of creativity and that defense. I think that can help. When you don't have a lot of you know big time personnel on the rosser. Yeah i'll tell you the one thing that sticks with me from that first. Preseason game is the fact that on multiple third downs dean pees sending the house. And it's something that frustrated me more than anything that dan queen did where third downs. You've heard long. You know the his overarching tendency was to rush or four and hope to god quarterback. Just make a bad throw but he was constantly putting the secondary in position to fail where that quarterback was getting five six seconds to scan the field in that is a big ask for any quarter even the top tier corner it to your point i think dean is going to set the secondary up a much better. This year. i think is going to find different ways to apply pressure especially on third downs and not ask as much from these guys from a coverage standpoint. I'm with you. I think they can be middle of the pack and to be clear last year. Even though we're sort of used to instinctively saying the falcons defense sucks there. Were actually middle of the pack. At the end of the season they started rough but You know a lot of credit for he morris. Jeff elbrick that you. That actually finished outside the top twenty two. I think there were you really right there in the middle grade so no reason to think that with a better defensive coordinator they can't achieve the same thing and with aj trail potentially taken that leap to true corner a true. Starting cornerback number one for this team. I think that's gonna make a big difference So i'm with you. I will gladly take on the cries of being called nydia abuse to but yes i feel like this can be a serviceable unit and maybe even more in twenty twenty one. So yeah and you know one thing too. Is you talk about remorse. And the improvements. We saw a lot of these exotic looks that dean piece giving under yes. We personnels not that different. We're seeing safety. You know safety bliss in the gap. We're seeing linebackers blitzen. You're not rushing three on third and seven and given you know. Tom brady eight seconds to throw. Who i you know. It's it's it's not saying. Oh well i hope everything goes right. You're coming with a scheme. There's a game plan and if it doesn't work out. I'm willing to die that more than i'm willing to die by well. Let's just hope everything goes right on this. Yes yeah but i i'm with you. I would much rather take the boomer bust defense you know. Send the house and they beat us. They beat us as opposed to. Let's sit back and hope we can cover the past that that may come in so a hundred percents. All right jake. Having you on the podcast. "He everybody around. What a steel This guy's awesome. You know what is deal for the falcons. They got star corner in the second round. And that's not his fault and you know you're you're exactly right when you talk about you know when something goes poorly everybody notices you have to take into account there are other plays when he's not targeted than you might just be you know. Absolute blanket lockdown coverage. That's not always the case but You know he. I don't think he's fit on the boundary. I don't think he ever wasn't said on the boundary. i don't think he ever will be a fit on a boundary. However we've seen dean pees us logan ryan As that kinda you know slot corner safety hybrid kind of move them around like a chess piece. I don't think as a oliver's talented as logan ryan. But i do think that you can put him in that role in you know attempt to have the part and that's just you know we like we said it's going to be the whole thing stinks these defense. Everybody just has to play a part. And i think oliver can do it well enough. He's still a very big corner. He would be a huge nickel corner. And don't like the whole desma gang going back to whole desmond gang thing. That's probably another reason. Why i didn't wanna bring commitment one or to look at oliver because he would probably be doing but i just don't think that he deserves all of the you know. All of the lighting. The that he gets the secondary as a whole edgy. Said they've not been a fantastic group overall. And he's just a part of that and i think a lot of it was expectation But you know he could have a big year this year. I think he. I think he will be competent. This year I think it will be it will be fine. I'm going to give him that step. That is to be blunt. There were years falcons fan where i would have gladly taken fine in the secondary. And yeah i i think you said it perfectly on the boundaries. He absolutely was a terrible fit and he he did play much better. I think when they moved into the slot now much better from a terrible corner to like mediocre to average at best. But if i look at his. Pf grades he'd still overall ranked particularly well but he is actually good in run defense tackling. Not what you want from a corner But i think that does speak to him being better. Closer to the line of scrimmage as opposed to being out fifteen twenty yards away from it. So a i'm hopeful that dean peace will find the right wolf for him in the defense as you mentioned. I think that's the key here. And if he can carve out the role where he's getting half the snaps and You know playing it a little bit better level and what he did last year. I think that's suitable for a guy who is not at this point considered to be a starter in my mind. Going forward elected college teams. They'll have a have a position. they all different things. Jack star joker know whatever. You wanna call it. I feel like that's kinda that richie grant Even deron harmon..

"Our series. Taking a look at the falcons roster as they head into the twenty twenty one season with the first preseason came being just a one day way from points on forty nece and the regular season being one month away. cannot wait to get to actual falcons football today. We're going to dive into the linebackers and we're gonna make some distinctions here. But before we do that. I'll introduce our guest on the podcast. He is the editor-in-chief at the alcoholic. The one and only dave show thanks. Thanks for jumping in with me. Let's talk about some linebackers guy. You know it's funny We started we went through the entire offense and it felt like with each physician group. There was something really positive to talk about dead. We started defense with the defensive line and it pretty much was like. Hey great he's great and then sort of went downhill from there. The the defensive Line is obviously terrible. But i feel like the linebackers may be the strongest component of this defense. A with dion jones for your lucon. Michael walker is going into second year. Am i off base on this with you. Know what you see from this defense or do you feel like this may be the strongest unit in what is arguably going to be weak defense so just to be clear. We're only talking about our inside linebacker inside or outside linebacker defensive line yes yeah absolutely. I think that's the the distinction we have to make. Is that guys. Like jacob t two mariner who used to have his hand in the dirt is now lining up outside linebacker. Stephen means dante fowler. We talked about all those guys as essentially being part of the defensive line because it isn't important distinction and it's validated by the first depth chart we saw the falcons quote unquote base. Defense is going to be a three four So when we're talking about linebackers we're talking about The guys in the middle so the ones who won't necessarily be on the edge rushing the passer some yup. Thanks for clarifying that. But yes we're talking about those Those specific guys in middle. Now that we've clarified that. Yes i think it's true strength for the defense. I absolutely do. I think you know a lucon getting that. Mike responsibility whether or not. He's you know sort of calling plays for the defense i think is a responsibility. That reflects really well on him. He had a good year last year. certainly lived up to my expectations forum. This player that will be interesting to see if they want to keep around. Long-term i have to think they probably do But you know really good linebacker dion jones. Obviously he's also very good with you. Know a spectacular upside. He's capable of things. Nobody else on this roster is capable of and then michael walker year ago was. I thought terrific for a rookie. Really every opportunity he had he excelled and i know he's shown up You know a little bit bulkier noticeably so potentially hill end up rushing the passer some two which will be interesting. I think he can certainly do that. So this is a versatile talented athletic group of three guys. And then beyond that. You know brandon copeland i know is primarily working as an outside linebacker but based on the notes that we've seen from mike rothstein indian on some things. Kevin knight has told us here at the site. Doria threads and errol thompson have both look pretty solid for rookies. In one of those guys. Probably gonna make the roster as well so you know overall Even if you just had those top three that's strong. There's not really a true weakness there. There's not a bad player. You're having to carry as there isn't so many other position groups on this roster right so You know and i say that in the hopes that that will not be true but it probably will be So just knowing that at least for this year. You've got three really good inside linebackers Guys who can do a lot of different things for you is is really encouraging. So it's definitely one of the groups. I feel best about i. Feel like the that clarification you made we have to make it almost every year like It's just statistically unlikely that every single young guy that you bring into camp whether it's an undrafted guy or a guy that you drafted in later rounds is gonna work out like that is just not how the nfl works. In an ideal world you would find a bunch of starters throughout the fourth fifth sixth and seventh rounds of the draft But it doesn't happen so you need the guys at the top of the roster to be quality players and then hope you hit occasionally on some of those undrafted guys in those late round guys so like some of the names you mentioned so start with the first name That you sort of referenced. And i feel like he has a bit of a reputation damage to recover from. It seemed like the last couple of years. He did not live up necessarily to what his first few years in the league indicated he could be especially his rookie year where he was just absolutely fantastic. He is. I think in my mind the best coverage linebacker in league. I don't there's a linebacker that's faster than him. He demonstrates i think game changing speed when he is on the field he is a guy regularly matches up with alvin kamara and has shut him down on several occasions Which is Quite the feet very few linebackers in leak of done that just to be clear in yet. He's done it a few times. And i am talking about dion jones. He has twenty six this year so he's still incredibly young and last year dave he had a one. I'm sorry to interceptions for eighty four yards. Which is just stunning. One for a touchdown four and a half sacks which was his highest sack total of his career a long shot and he was. I think second the team in sacks which is maybe more of an indictment of breast the defense than what he did in particular. Are you expecting him to have sort of another big season like what he had. Last year it felt like two thousand eighteen two thousand nineteen the you know. He was starting to save fall off but he didn't quite live up to. I think a standard that we all have more minds for him. But last year the two interceptions the sacks tackles. It really looked like he bounced back. Are you expecting the same. Or maybe even more from him under a new defensive defensive coordinator dean pees. Yeah i think for sure. And i think you know one of the things with the joneses. Even like his worst season his season where he's banged up and injured is a great statistical season for most linebackers and and certainly indicator of just how much he can change a game with one big play. And i think in a dean pees defense where he might get the opportunity to rush the passer more often certainly were his athleticism is going to be really appreciate it. You know as it was certainly under dan. Quayle end and raheem morris. I don't want to pretend that you know. They didn't know what they had with the jones. But i think just the opportunity. A pass rusher alone.
