I would not sit and try to do my own research. I'm just trying to justify. I watched a lot of TV as a kid, and before the Internet folks, we had a admiration I'm told, it helped me get a job when I was young. I'm youngish, right? When I was 22, somebody put me on television, I looked like I was 14, I sounded like I was 9. But if you could get past a delivery, I knew a lot about a lot. I knew a lot about sports history. Reading books like greatest athletes of all time. And among the chapters was Jim Brown, who was a living legend, we lost the greatest running back of them all, and in my view, the greatest football player we've ever seen, the announcement made on Friday, Brown passing away at the age of 87. I ran through all of the accolades, the achievements, his unique standing as one of the first cross over stars moving from sports in entertainment, starting with the dirty dozen and a variety of other films. He was impactful in pop culture. He was meaningful in truly important developments like the civil rights movement, he was also somebody who had issues with women and legal trouble connected to a variety of accusations for abusing women and domestic violence and I gave you the details of that because that's part of the obituary. I am not trying to dwell on the negative, but you can't tell the Jim Brown story without being fully inclusive. Still, when Brown passed away, we had so much of an outpouring of emotion and reflection from every corner of the sports world, LeBron James had a lot of great things to say, obviously, with the Cleveland connection, but because I am in the content industry, I immediately gravitated towards Jim irsay, this courtesy of Mike florio's empire pro football talk want to give them attribution because there's too much stealing in our business. Jim or say is a unique cat. Not only is he one of the more outgoing, personable NFL owners at the NFL owner meetings when they get together, he's one of the few that will stop for people holding microphones. He shares opinions. You got to give him credit for this. He was the first one to publicly suggest it might be time for the league to part ways with Daniel Snyder. Foreshadowing the pending sale and the long overdue. We're talking 20 years overdue of the NFL finally getting Snyder out of the mix. And I'll skip that rent for today. Or say, certainly does some weird things? Who else would have hired? Jeff Saturday seems like a nice man. I liked him on the talking head shows on ESPN, but he had no head coaching experience. Then goes on to have that game with that phenomenal performance against Vegas or say is taking a victory lap, feels like cult fans are buying Super Bowl tickets and then they have the greatest collapse we've ever seen on the road in Minnesota or say also likes to sing. Did you know that he's got a cover band? And he's out there belting out pink floor hits. I feel comfortably numb right now, going through all these details. So or say, of course, had to weigh in. And it was respectful and beyond paying his homage to Jim Brown. He came up with this tweet, my list of the top 5 greatest info players of all time. I have top 5 as. I do give her a credit for being expansive, including deacon Jones, or deacon Jones would have been the all time sack leader, but sacks weren't officially a stat when he played back in the day of the fearsome foursome and the head slap, Reggie white, belongs in the conversation. We never talk about defensive players, lord Taylor should be there on page, joining LT is the only defensive players over to win the NFL MVP award. But the fascinating development comes down to this. Including John Elway, now again, I don't want to be captain history here. But for the folks who don't remember, Elway, and I remember vividly as a football fan plus, we share the same Alma mater, so I know people who know John and I've heard these stories off the record as well. John was so resentful of having to play for the cult when they drafted him because he had options, he said he was going to go play baseball because he shined at sunken diamond as a baseball player for Stanford and the football team. That's how little he won to play for the colts. You know, own the cults at the time? Or say his father, Robert. So the fact that earth say would have the ability to step back, remove emotion and come up with an objective view of Elway in the top 5 as fascinating, but it's also really interesting that he did not include Peyton Manning. All Peyton did was win four MVP awards and take the colts to the only Super Bowl. They've won. I don't know what's going on there. Now or say, did get the reaction on social media, followed up with this thought. No doubt, Peyton, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice in the top ten. It's just that Elway didn't have great offensive players around him till the end when he went to in a row and his feet were remarkable from baseball talents. So putting in mobility as the tiebreak. So yeah, when we first started NFL network, the first thing we did was go to the pro football Hall of Fame. Before we launched and I recorded a bunch of round table interviews, though there was no table and there's nothing round of just me sitting on a director's chair and then other director shares next to me inside the bus room. And we didn't air those interviews till the next year, which we needed to run instead of NFL total access because everybody did to NFL total access, boarded a flight to go to canton. So we needed the content to fill the whole of what normally would have been NFL total access that night. And so the interview I had was it was with me. It was supposed to be the hardest hitters in the history of the game. Me, Ronnie lott, and Lawrence Taylor. And Lawrence Taylor didn't show. And it was Ronnie lott and it was Merlin Olsen. And I asked those guys the hardest hit they ever delivered to anyone on the Phil Merlin Olson said, Jim Brown, I hit him so hard one time. He goes, he came to the coliseum and that's all we talked about all week is we are not going to let him beat us. We're going to put on the ground father Murphy did not say ass. And so Merlin Olsen said that he had a clear shot of Jim Brown, which is so rare. Jim Brown coming around the end, a clear shot at him, and he just walloped him. I've been here in the conversation between you guys for weeks now. And I'm like, when's the perfect time to bring it up today is now the time to follow that twice. Mike tell twofold. You say that back in your day. When I was a really in living state of New Jersey, right? 6 pack abs runner. Okay. I was the epitome. I finished number one on the police test in the physical test. Okay. And you had to run it in that and do 40s and stuff. Just like I'm setting this up. Just like George stone, AKA Giuseppe from the untouchables. You're the best in your class. I was the best in my class. So. You claim what? No. What I claimed, we had a talk and crystal set it up because I think I've set it up. We talked about Lawrence Taylor. I don't know why I came up. "Carson once with a game under his belt, staying home for the second straight home game for indie missing T Y Hilton, and not a great offensive performance by the cult against Seattle. The Rams go in there and take care of business. Go to two and Again. It's going to sound like a broken record. But the Rams had trouble running the football until late in the game with six minutes when the Bears had to commit and you know and really try to shut it down. That's when they had They got their yardage. We did not see a great performance. By the Bears from Khalil Mack. He was almost invisible can during the whole football game? It was really surprising. So even with that, said ran Running game did not get off. Michelle did not plan to late in the fourth quarter. So their running game has to evolve. They can throw the football uh, Matthew stuffers in the best shape of his life. Um, the football that he threw the van Jefferson when he rolled out and let that one rip was about 55 yards in the area. It was sizzling. It got there in a hurry. So he's in great shape. There have been bootlegging him around. Um, they've got weapons. They're having fun, but again when you play a full season and you've got to be able to get three or four yards They had a situation. They were down near the goal line third and four. They did hit Cooper Cop, but it was a running situation and they went away from that they went to the past. There you go. Alright, well, Derek Carr was spectacular Monday night threw for over 450 yards and the Raiders are able to somehow come back from the dead after turning the ball over inside the one yard line there on that interception when it looked like they were going to have the game one. In fact, they thought they did have it one and they find out they came up a little short and then the interception, But then a big time play. From Nassib to get the strip sack on Lamar Jackson. They end up winning the game, rather crazy game. You know, Here's the thing with Marcus Mario to the one run. He has for 31 yards, and I'm looking. I'm saying, God, I know Gruden's gonna mix them in. Now he's going to get you know, car and then certain situations. Mario is going to be in there. It's going to be fun. You need two quarterbacks. But now Mario is going to miss multiple weeks due to that aggravated quad injury, which kind of sucks but Still, the Raiders found a way to get it done. I'm not sold that they're going to be able to go into Pittsburgh on the short week and get that offense going the way they want to. But I also wasn't impressed with Pittsburgh and that first half against Buffalo. They got a big turnover that changed the game. In the second half. They were able to beat the bill. So, uh, one in the capture of Roethlisberger, I think it's going to be a rather low scoring game. Your take, as far as the Raiders trying to make it two in a row off the short week off the nice win against Baltimore, they can get it done and be great. But your take their as somebody from the outside looking in at this radar team. Yeah, I think you know defensively. You don't have to face Lamar Jackson. You're facing Roethlisberger. So I think you can do a lot more things to get to the big Ben and, of course, setting down Judicious Smith. Schuster is always a key. It's a Steelers in the Raiders. It doesn't get any better than that, Uh can I mean this is this is what it's about in regards to Hardcore SC football and I think the Raiders showed a lot of lot of intensity. I want to get your take, just because I did pick Cleveland to go to the Super Bowl, and I was really impressed the way they played. They built that 20 to 10 lead. They let it get away The Boche punt. Uh, unacceptable. I mean, even get outside, You get a chance to still punt the ball, Maybe not as far as you want to, but you've got to get rid of that football and they gave that one away against Kansas City. You don't get a great opportunity to be many opportunities to be. Kansas City, especially at Arrowhead got to take advantage of that, and that could come back to haunt him in the postseason as far as the home field advantage, But what's your overall take? Of both Cleveland and Kansas City because everybody pretty much pencils Kansas City in from the FC, and I'm not so sure that they're better than Cleveland Buffalo again. But what does it say about his prior three or four years four plus years. That were not near that good. It says the me that all you gotta do is motivate the guy. And you're gonna see the truth. This is what people have been going gaga about with aaron rodgers for his whole career since he started which is look the talent look at the ability and he put it together and And big band coming in thinner now on the tv. He wants the team to win right now. So him being motivated big band to try to get tj. What we signed would involve not trying to give him power to hold how it would be trying to make it where he signed. Because you know who's gonna be more influential the influenceable who's going to be influenced. Rooney's or t. j. watt. Because you didn't want more likely. "Transplant or something that he had on ice speaking of organs. My buddy jerry kale. I had liver and kidney transplant this weekend or two weeks ago. I talked to him last night. It's amazing so he had the double lung transplant. And because of all the anti rejection drugs that everything delivering the kidneys overworked and He got put to the top of the list because he was failing after his bike to breed them. Yeah he put himself on a bike and rode from new hampshire brooklyn. She's and then right after that it was like right into the hospital and the only reason i'm saying this because he's put it out there and he has an amazing amazing human being so he got a liver and kidney and i talked to him yesterday. Like man i'm doing great everything's fantastic. That's great yeah. I tell this story all the time. That forty mile bike tour when we were with jerry. I was like i haven't done this. Jerry's double lung transplant. A little older. I'll just hang with him the whole time me and him. We'll go because i didn't want overstressed myself soon. Well, I've been mentioning this for years that I wanted the NFL NFL films to go back and tabulate all the sacks from the players who played prior to 1982 when sacks became an official stat. Well Pro football reference did that and from 1964 to 1969 Deacon Jones led the NFL in sacks five times. Total of 115 and a half sacks in in that time period. And I wanted to know how many times did quarterbacks drop back and pass so that the ratio of sacks to drop backs It's got to be completely different than what you have. Now you're dropping back 30 40 times again. Deacon Jones average one sack Every 23 times. The opposing quarterback dropped back to pass by comparison. Michael Stray hands record season in 2001, where he had 22 a half sex. He average one sack every 25 times. Quarterbacks drop back to pass. So unofficially, Deacon Jones six season run. Was better than the best official single season sack record of all time. Another comparison. TJ Watt led the NFL with 15 sacks last year. One sack every 38 times, a quarterback dropped back to pass. These are unofficial stats, But at least they have tabulated. Some of these got them up to date with Deacon Jones. Jack Youngblood. There are a lot of great Alan page lot of great pass rushers, and I think that they were, uh Kind of hell do a different standard or we forgot about them and you had you had the opportunity to be able to go back and tabulate these sack totals and they should be up to date.
