"And we've been operating steadily ever since. And I tell the story all the time. We were in the we were right in the mist buster of launching our 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of the Negro leagues. And this was going to be a major undertaking for the museum, a yearlong celebration. We were going to have a major fundraising campaign, built around the anniversary. We announced it on February 13th of 2020 with Major League Baseball and the Players Association represented there. And 30 days later, everything comes to a screeching hope. Just by that, I don't go coronavirus. And I'll tell you, I still don't know what a coronavirus is. I just know it wreak havoc, but as I also oftentimes talk about this as a steward of this story, you know you are not allowed to wallow in self pity. Right. That would be doing a tremendous disservice to those who call the Negro leagues home. But as I oftentimes say, there was some wallowing going on. Now, that was definitely some wallowing going on, man, because we had built this entire yearlong celebration. This was going to be the thing that was going to propel the Negro leagues baseball museum into the future. And all of a sudden, you feel so helpless. But also, and I use a terrible baseball analogy to describe coronavirus. Coronavirus buster was that big nasty right hander that threw one high and tight knocked you down and so you know you got to get back up. You got to dust yourself off and you got to get back in the baddest box and try to figure out how you gonna hit this sucker. And that's exactly what we were able to do and we launched a virtual campaign called tip your cap to the Negro leagues and the campaign goes viral and then all of a sudden the feeling of doom and gloom that was surrounding me at our museum turned to renewed hope and optimism. It's about resiliency and the story of the Negro leagues, the crux of it. It's about resiliency that resilience spirit that basically allow them to refuse to accept the notion that they were unfit to play this game. So I'll show you. And we had to channel that kind of resiliency and we were able to do that and to be honest, we had one of the best years in recent museum history became out of COVID in 2020 and we've been writing that wave every since. With buck O'Neill going into the national baseball Hall of Fame, which I did not think was going to happen. You know, this was an improbable event that took place when buck is voted in and then last year, of course, being inducted into the national baseball Hall of Fame. So let me ask you one of those lines as you were talking, I was thinking about, you know, the Texas Rangers sort of lived in a parallel universe as you in so to speak because they open up a new ballpark in 2020 was going to be the year that they were going to sort of relaunch their franchise, right? And they didn't have an opportunity to do that. And they still have been trying to recover, which is why you've seen them spend big money on Corey Seeger and Marcus Simeon and Bruce bochy and Jacob de Grom, and they're clearly sort of trying to relaunch that. Did you guys have any discussions about somehow relaunching the idea of the hundredth anniversary? Because I remember being excited about that. If there's some form or some way to do that. "It when, you know, I think there were parts of it that I wasn't a fan of, but I understand that if you're committing potentially hundreds of millions of dollars like Julio Rodriguez, like that might be there might be something to that contract, right? Like it might be kind of complicated, but it's my cool walk. Yeah, I understood with green because of the uncertainty that he'll be back and how good he'll be and all of that. And I guess with waka, there's always a little bit of uncertainty about health, but not in as acute away as there was with green. So I don't know. Suddenly, it's just these modest contracts are incredibly complicated. It seems, anyway, Padres somehow squeezing another player onto their ever expanding roster. And it also came out that they are now it seems like going to be switching over from a revenue sharing recipient to a revenue sharing payee. So because their revenue has increased so much and because they expect it to increase so much more with more ticket sales and sponsorships, et cetera. So it does turn out that you do have to spend money to make money or at least that is one way you can do it. So I don't know whether that pays for the spending that they've done on the free agent market and on the trade market and everything if you're doing just an annual budget, but it does go to shows that even in a modest media market, if you invest in your team and everyone gets super excited about it, granted there aren't as many alternative pro teams and said, yeah, go for people to get excited about, but still, Padres fans are excited about the Padres and I would be too if my team were allowed to roster 49 players. Yep, as Stephanie Epstein said, small market is a state of mind. Exactly. Yeah. I hope, by the way, that we'll get some news at some point about fewer blackouts in MLA TV, speaking of MOP TV, because it does sound like that's a priority now, rob Manfred made some statements about how that is a priority for the league. And we will see their hints are tied to some extent, but as we discussed recently with all the valleys possible bankruptcy situation, perhaps they'll be able to claw back some rates and show us more games because that'd be really nice too. If we could pay for MLB TV and also watch all the games on there, that would be great too. At least the ones that are not split up into 7 other streaming services. Yeah, I mean, I have so many streaming services now. And because I like poker face, I have another. I haven't used to have Ben. And so I feel overwhelmed by that. Well, people tend to churn them now. They just want to watch one show. As they signed up for a month and they binge that and then they let their subscription lapse. So there's a lot of turnover these days as people are trying to juggle several streaming services. So there's something that happens when spring training starts, which is it's very exciting and everyone shows up and then you start getting injury news pour in so whether it's a gram feeling some soreness or it's Frankie montas of the Yankees possibly going to miss the entire season or it's Steven Strasburg having another setback. It's like there's this Schrodinger's injury thing that happens like before pitchers report before players show up and start to do things that sometimes injure them or you find out about preexisting injuries. You can just sort of dream and fantasize about the season and look at who you got and then reality sets and when spring training starts and this guy's shoulder hurts and that guy's elbow hurts and often these things as you're ramping up for the regular season workload. That is when things tend to break or you realize that something you hoped would have healed over the off season didn't and that's why we see so many Tommy John surgeries or injuries that lead to John surgeries tend to crop up in spring training. So it's a combination of the optimism of renewal of spring and it's a fresh start and then almost immediately there's just an onslaught of sad depression goose too. So you can't have one without the other, I suppose. Yeah, it is a bummer, but you know it's like the 60 day IL opens up and you gotta tell people when people are hurt so you can start moving guys over there not the gram is going on the 68. Not saying that. Isn't what I'm saying, but part of it is that there is this option available to teams now that they can move guys there who are injured in more substantial ways than Jacob de Grom, who was, it sounds like just soaring cold, you know? And who hasn't been sore and cold or sore because of colts. So there's that piece of it too, where it's like, what did we get to put a guy on the 60 day and that opens up a roster spot for us? And now we can go sign a veteran to an overly complicated deal for no reason. Right. Yeah, I've been with the Padres specifically, they don't have to worry about the raster spots as much as everyone else does. Because they have like 90s what we've established. Exactly. They got a special exemption. So we've got a guest today, and it's a recurring guest, a favorite of ours at pal, Evan drellich, who is a newly published author of a very fine book about baseball called winning fixes everything, how PS bar's brightest mains created sports biggest mess. It's about the Houston Astros. It's about science doing, but it's about much more than that in the league as a whole and how a front office operates and functions or dysfunctions as the case may be. Evan's been working on this one for a while. So we will have him on to talk about this in just a moment. "And we can talk a little bit more about rob here and maybe we'll get to that because I think it's an interesting trade for mat two, but rob is basically went from what? Like 70, I think $72 to a $180 in three days, three or four days. So he's definitely improved his prospects for the auction and next season, making these deals. And it certainly seems like based on what he said to you in the chat just now. That he's got more to sell, which he certainly does. Any thoughts or any sort of surprise on rob zen, like he is three big pitch or he has four big pictures that were on his roster like last season, he had Joe mosgrove, his Aaron nola, Luis Castillo, and he also had the least severino Nolan being the most expensive and I think most people would probably opt for the grand option ahead of even though Noel is probably safer in almost as almost as good or like the 50th percentile outcome is probably about the same. And then Castillo is like $21 and submarine is 18. Which of those guys would you have preferred to have paid for? Or would you just pay for musgrove? I think musgrove must prove. I think, you know, there's a lot of different ways to look at it. I'm not a de Grom guy at the moment. I mean, the math doesn't really work on my roster. I think somebody who and neither does for that matter. So. Most of them, just a bit of fan must grow for a while, a and like them, you know, he's never really showed his seasons has just gotten progressively better. There's obviously the risk with the Grom 34 years old. So if you're asking who I'd like the most might be a different question, who I think made the most sense on my roster probably would have been much more than Nolan or de Grom. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I guess the other two I would have been asking for would have been Luis Castillo or Louis severino. I wouldn't push this up. I mean, I remember when he got him, you know, for a buck or something super cheap and different story, but I just I'll let someone else I wouldn't have overpaid for him. I happily take him on my roster for 18 bucks. He's able to Luis Castillo. I think he had such an awful start last year. I wouldn't overpay for him either, but I love to have my roster for 21 bucks too. The musgraves, yeah, I'm a must grow fan. I think the price is right. I don't think it was an overpayment. I think, yeah, like you said, it was the market. Good trade for both sides. If you look at a together just because again, I assume that a coon you would have been tossed back, right? So really Matt paid 29 bucks for musgrove Corona worth and Hanukkah yeah, he basically had Andrew pay for the deal. Right. So here the hell that off season so far is basically what's it been three days? Three days into the off season. He's a tough mudder list. Yeah, I think. Yeah, not had a really good day in terms of acquiring and selling. I think the weird part for Matt is when you look at Matt's roster, he has so many good players that are super cheap. Like I can almost fill out this entire column. I might have to increase the size of this thing just because he has so many cheap players that he can keep and I think this deal makes it a little bit more challenging to keep everyone. So he's going to have to sell some pretty quality players in my opinion. I'm just filling this out right now, so we got Joe musgrove now. That's going to add another 14. He's got he's got Lance mccullers. He's got Justin Verlander. He's got Michael Harris. He's got missing a big one. I don't think he keeps walking around. I think Michael gets tossed back. I would not keep walker Bueller for whatever he's priced at. What's the status going into the season? Do you know? He's off for the entire year. Oh, that's right. Okay, I couldn't remember what I couldn't remember exactly what you drew. So never mind, you get started there. He's probably going to keep Romano for four bucks. He could keep Joe Ryan. He could keep. He could bring singer, like, and this is just one variation of this. You could put in like 5 other names, but he's God, yeah, 14 guys for 89 bucks on here. Yeah, better all super cheap. Everyone is like Joe musgrove is the most expensive player on Matt's team right now. It's a Scott Vanderbilt team. It very much is. So I'm guessing some of these guys get moved. And maybe he goes and adds, I don't know. You get out of a big time picture he could add a big time hitter, perhaps like cheaper. But you get so Perez. He can go get Sal Perez. But he's got adley rushman. So which was always my issue. So stop them before you go. And certainly didn't. But yeah, I mean, we can go on AD nauseum over the Salvador Perez terrain, but and like I said last year, I would gladly cut Saul Paz. But Matt forced my hand and I'm very happy to have a very cheap Dalton var show for $4. Cool. So I think we've went through each of the trades that have went down over the past couple of days. I did kind of want to touch on just real quick. Maybe some guys that we haven't talked about much like it's pretty much been the same, we've talked about will. We've talked a little about me. Obviously you've talked about Andrew and Johnny quite a bit. We've talked about rob, but like maybe someone like Tim, I've been discussing trades with people in terms of someone that I've spoken with, I think he was also someone that was trying to make a big time deal tonight and fell a little short, but he has kind of a sneaky like a sneaky good roster with Darvish mcclanahan, he has Christian homme. He picked up Bobby witt. He's got a cheap all hundred Kirk in the catcher spot. He's got an intriguing Aaron ashby. You know, there's a lot of options that he can go for. But I think he needs to, but this is the thing. I think he needs to still add another player to, but I don't know how he does that with where he's at money wise. He only has a $184. And this is kind of the problem with what you were talking about a little while ago with Gary Cole was. Like Gary Cole should have ended up in Tim's hands. He shouldn't have been to Johnny. It should have been ten. And Tim should have won it in the off season with $84 and paid a 104 coal, but he decided Tim decided that he could

"Between the mets and the braves, in which I took Charlie Morton, but I was basically just cheering for the braise because I didn't want to Grom. I didn't want them to be in it. You know, to compete for the division. Like I wanted them to just say screw it and play for the wild card. Unfortunately for me, both of those things happen. So the real world implication was, was there I just didn't expect them to pitch Corbin burns, I was like, he's already won a Cy Young. It was announced that Carlos or Don would also be shut down, so he had already won the strikeout, you know, moose strikeouts in the NL. And then someone pointed out the fact that he was at a 199 innings, and they wanted to get him over 200. And so going into that game that day, like more than anything, I was like Corbin burns is gonna make or break. This matchup. I just didn't know how many innings he was gonna toss. And fortunately for me, he only pitched three. They were really, really good innings, but could he have gone longer? Yeah, fuck yeah, I could have. He was definitely dealing. And I had guys, you know, I feel like everyone that was on that with the exception of Adrian Sampson had good outings, but they were abbreviated. We knew Kershaw's was gonna be a review that I had no idea what the angels or Houston were gonna do with from her and shohei, but they both only pitched 5. And I have been dealing with abbreviated innings pretty much the entire second week, like Arias was abbreviated the moment that the mets found out that they couldn't win the division. They pulled Taiwan walker after going four to third and striking out ten with nowhere and run, so I was like, well, there goes that. There were so many situations like that on both sides. Like, I mean, I don't know if it was due to injury or they just wanted to shut down, but Logan Webb was shut down. I had sandy Alcantara who was lined up to start the final day of the season. He was shut down, but I had found that information at much earlier than Johnny, and so like, I don't know if it was a surprise to him. That they were shut down when they were, but I wasn't surprised at all. I basically had been plotting for them not to be there. So like my internal projections were very differently, but going back to what I said about the Yahoo projection, what was interesting was he had Jacob de Grom in his act of an act of roster spot. And Yahoo, you know how you get the green check or whatever to indicate a probable. They removed that check, but they didn't remove his projection. And so and they gave him an amazing projection of like 16.3 points. So like Johnny's like projection and Yahoo was so overstated by in particularly that projection, the entire last three or four days of the season, whereas it looked like he was eventually going to blow me out, but like I knew that wasn't actually the case where it was so unlikely that brahm was going to go. The other thing I didn't get and I actually think that for the most part the daily Yahoo projections are pretty solid, but they're very fragile as we know.

So it's on the road now for the Mariners they'll play the Astros in Houston on Tuesday. Football Sunday for the Giants they go across the seas and they'll play the packers in London that game is a 9 30 a.m. kick-off in London, so packers are favored by 8 and a half points. Elsewhere it's the dolphins and the jets, an important game for the jets for sure coming in at two and two, Zach Wilson at quarterback two otunga bye loa out with that concussion. "Investigation. I'm Brad. Well, the Yankees have had some rough spots this season, but right now in late September, this is definitely not a rough spot. They are in a kind of a hot streak right now. They've won 6 straight, including a 7 5 win Saturday over the Red Sox. That means they've won ten of their last 12 and they've reduced their magic number to win the American League east down to three games. Aaron judge did not hit a home run on Saturday. He's gone four straight games without a dinger, but the Yankees did get three home runs besides him on Saturday. So they'll wrap the series against the Red Sox on Sunday and then head to Toronto. Thanks not so good for the mets. They were losers in Oakland ten to four Jacob de Grom has been very steady most of this season, but he got bounced around and only went four innings. He falls to 5 and three on the year and things not great for the mets and also how about the Atlanta Braves. They're in Philadelphia and they double up on the Phillies and win 6 to three Kyle Wright is the first pitcher in Major League Baseball this year to get to 20 wins. The lead for the mets right now is only a game and a half, so things still a little bit dicey for the mets as they come down the stretch. Let's flip to football NFL tomorrow. It's the jets back home after that rally win in Cleveland last Sunday. They'll welcome the Bengals 1 o'clock kick-off Cincinnati of course looking for their first victory after losses in weeks one and two.
