"By a smart team like we've got with johnson and colors brad anderson if it's handled well and you have smart readers and i honestly believe most comic book. Readers are smart people who understand. Maybe there might be people who can't articulate it. The way that i can because i'm smart and good looking but under mentally when you read that story you you understand on on like a base level and like the part of your brain that knows story understand story you accept whether or not you understand. It is irrelevant because your brain is like. This is exactly how the story should have ended. The kind of the whole point of it at the end was the joker. Wanted to get rid of joe. Chill or reconcile that So that the joker could be the primary focus of batman so he could cause more he can be the sole source of pain shirt batman. And i don't wanna. I don't wanna take up too much time because i i just could because we haven't even touched on barbara and jason and without going into too much detail what we have with all of the jokers center in the story. What we have with bruce. We have with barbara jason. Joe chill is everything and i've been talking about. It's going back to the beginning and existing now and what counts. What doesn't count. And how do you grow. And how do you change. And how does the bad stuff in your life. That's happened affect who you are now. And how you're going to move forward and when you look at joe chill who had nothing but remorse for that awful thing he did. You've got joker. Who's like i want to make this. I to be worse i want to. I want to be the ultimate awful thing you've got barbara who's pain and trauma from the past. Drives her to be a better person. And you've got jason who's pain and drama from his past drives him vengeance and you have roost. Who's.

"Chill is not on a redemption art. No he's he's on very much a. I screwed up. I made a mistake. I made the biggest mistake of all time. And i need to own up to it. So we've got the jokers. Break him out. They string him up. They torture him in order to break him batman. I'm i'm cutting through so much. I'm not doing any of this. we can backup of. We have okay. Batman rescues joe. Chill an e so here. Here's this man that caused every ounce of pain. Bruce wings ever experienced and he's literally got his hands on him and we have a moment where he rips office kaolin. He's like i'm bruce wayne and like they're both like on the edge of tears. Basically and joe chill. It's very clear. Joe chills now going to make it and as has like jackass cancer. Yeah he's got. He's got cancer. And i want to say i don't quite remember. It's been a minute since. I've read that last issue but i know for a fact that like bruce wayne ends up not not forgiving hundred percent. Like you don't think as as humans. It's very difficult to forgive. What joe chill did shirley and he he found batman found love letter. So the letters restroom. He understands that this man feels guilt. And they end up reconciling peacefully. And because they're able to do that. Joe chill doesn't inherent the mantle of joker said inherent. It's didn't it. The mantle of the joker. He ended up absolving his conscious conscious conscience. Contents can't speak today. I apologize but he ends up absorbing absolving his his guilt to a certain extent and it's implied that he is more or less piece over here and batman or the first time in his life. I mean i say. Batman bruce wayne for the first time. It's like kind of able to close a door and be like i am. That part of me is done down. I don't have to kind of inch. They've tried to tackle in the past when people mossy wrote batman and robin batman was like. I'm really want to put the vengeance part behind me and just focus on being the best batman beat and i think narrative speaking. I don't think bruce ever been in a position to really do that. Because you joe chill was caught but he still failed ultimately. And i think having joe chill having joe chill end his story away they did with with like a meeting of the two men face to face and saying they're pieces and making peace is going to allow bruce.

It was just breaking it down. I'm actually kind of sad saying it. There's something to be said for you know we. We see a lot of billions in comics. "So. We have the criminal we have. The comedian is the joker that shot barbara and the killing joe s and the clown is the one who killed jason. He got better. But that's a whole other and what we're seeing here is the the criminal. The joker is trying to define what would make the ultimate joker. And how do we take the concept of what we as jokers represent. How do we make the ultimate joker that will define everything in terror. Batman downed from the from his very core and just shake him to the point. They don't necessarily want to kill him now. They really wanna mess with them. That's yeah and that's the whole point behind this and you'll see it at the end but anyway i'm just going to. I don't know how to describe this without going. Right into so batman. We all know the batmans parents were killed in the alley. We've seen it every time there's a or a movie or whatever we we've seen it all before the man who pulled the trigger is joe chill and so this comic. It's so smart. We find out through the course of the story and again spoiler. This is your final spoiler warning. This is happening joe. Chill ills guilt for what he did. He feels awful but the jokers are like we need to go. Get joe chill. He killed batmans parents. They definitely know that. Bruce wayne is batman. We don't even get into that they do know. And that's just like a truth that you need to accept late. They know it and of course they know but but their whole ideas. Let's get joe chill and we're going to torture him until he completely breaks and we're going to make him the pinnacle because the only thing that none of these jokers really have is a connection to bruce wayne and not only does joe chill. Have a connection to bruce wayne. He has a connection to the defining moment of that. So when we find out that joe chill has nothing but guilt. About killing bruce wayne's parents it introduces a really interesting dynamic In prison he. He's written letters to bruce wayne. I don't know he wrote them daily but he has a stack of letters that he wrote to bruce wayne saying this is the worst thing i could have ever done. I still your entire life from you. Took your family from you. I deserve everything. I'm getting in more. And he could not bring himself to send those letters because like saying it out loud was something that he just. "Twenty twenty. no idea. It's so it's so crazy. It's so exciting. And it every time somebody mentions. Oh my gosh. Do you think the comic in trouble like is it. About every ten years we have the same conversation and we'll see ebbs and flows. And i've had a lot of people ask that recently as we're recording this there's There's a rumor spread rumors. But there's a there's a rumor that dc is letting go a lot of their employees on the on. The administrative side and people are lamenting the death of dc comics. And it's it's too soon to call. And the the legacy that dc has and the pedigree extends far beyond anything that we can even put our minds on. Well yeah and you have to understand that. Yeah this is. They're digging in with three jokers. They're digging into classic pivotal moments in batman lore absolutely and i would imagine jeff and who's yard jason. Probably when they they were young when eighty eight eighty nine when these two pivotal moments happened and so drawing on those two points because any batman fan any long-term batman pan will know about those two. Now they may not have grown up with that and weren't was pivotal part of their childhood but they have read it. I guarantee you and even going into like the dark knight. Like the film the dark knight sir which. We've all seen draws heavily from my favorite graphic novel of all time. We talked about this before. Batman the long halloween we that was written by jeff globe art by the amazing tim sale. I absolutely adore that. But i mean we have hollywood looking at these and saying this is a story worth telling and i think there's some merit to that one thing i love about three jokers is three jokers. Takes the idea that every version of the joker you've ever seen is waza able if not already existing in the world. Yeah so we have like the three main jokers of the story. Three joker the criminal the comedian and the clown and the idea of the criminal. Is that all of this is theoretical based on how the story is written and just based on the little snippets of clues that we have but the criminal is more or less. The original joker like this goes back to the forties fifties. Yeah he's he's a little bit older. He's been doing this for a very very long time. We have the.

"The period specific look of batman and the joker. We had a joker with a very long face. A very very angular features and we had like batman had like the longer ears and it helped define it defined batman for people like jason fe bach and people like tony daniel and the guys who are who are whore him in his. Oh my gosh. The people who are who are drawing batman right now for dc almost uniformly point at a paro. And then you know. They pointed a par for what he brought visually to a modern batman sale. And i honestly. I feel confident in saying what we're seeing with three jokers and jason box. Work is going to define batman moving forward. Jim lee helped define the look for all of the dc universe when the new fifty two launched years ago amassed and i think for that for that time with the we had the distinctive piping down the suits for everybody and and we've all kind of as the books have gone on with kind of moved away from that if you look at justice league like the first arc of justice league which is called origin. The new fifty two which turned into the moving justice league war. The animated movie Everybody wore kind of plate armor. And it's kind of transitioned away from that. But the visual language that was established by geoff. Johns and jim lee injustice area over through the new fifty two into the rebirth Going into even like doomsday clock. And we saw how batman and superman looked in that it has echoes going back to the new two and i honestly believe that the way fay balk has done. Every he's he's drawn the the best background but the way he's he's visually represented. Everybody and i don't know that we're going to start seeing it necessarily like in twenty twenty one or anything. But i think the way he's drawn these characters he's going to inform whoever's going to be drawing batman and ten fifteen years okay. This is what people are going to go back to. They're going to say i wanted. I wanted to use fe box. Batman or payback's barbara box. I think i think we're seeing a very important point in modern batman passing of the torch tomorrow and then you should mention that we also see the joker batman the killing joke. Which was alan moore and brian bolt. O'brien boland oh my gosh brian. I am excuse me. I have some dust on my shoulder. I'm facebook friends with richard stockings. A comic book. He writes elephant men. And i. I've had the privilege of speaking to him a couple of times and i run a comic bookstore here in lincoln nebraska and actually was able to send mr stockings justice league short box. Not one hundred percent but Richard stockings and i talked a little bit about how Brian balans work really. Just inspired him to be really better because he was just kind of starting in the lettering business when the killing joke came out and now like richard stockings name is synonymous with comic book. "The man who laughs inspired by the hugo slaughter. His name can't remember you. Victor hugo there. You go victor hugo in the actor that played the in the man who laughs conrad vite who had a disease that made him have a continuous smile on his face. The whole time and it is pretty eerie. And that's where the look came from. But there's always been a dispute with bilfinger and jerry robinson who actually came up with it. Turn all clued some notes in there you kind of read about it but also also definitely just dig into bilfinger and what he brought to batman and jerry robinson like it's worth it's worth your time to look into that history like i i'm not well-versed enough to to speak with authority on it but it is. It is incredibly interesting now. I don't want to take away from bob kane. But he's notoriously more bombastic and then creative well three jokers as we talked about that they bring into iconex stories The joker from the death in the family. Who if you don't know killed robin with the crowbar. And then the killing joke joke. Where barbara barbara with the bullet. And i didn't realize this. I kind of forgot that the covers for death in the family. That was mike mccullough. Yes mike minneola yeah. That's kinda forgot well and it was written by jim starling jim. Harlan really only know from his work with marvel. I am not like my people. Who don't know i i love comics and that's probably clear for my parents is on the show yesterday but i am more of a modern comics fan like we're talking like a post eighties bombastic nineties. Modern modern era. So a lot of and my knowledge lies mostly with marvel. That doesn't mean that i don't like. Dc i just did a whole show with you where. I talked about starter. Yup in star man in my love for those. So i don't i'm not at all like oh marvel's the best in dc source. But just i happen to know more about marvel dc. I dig in a little bit and the whole death. And i've read death in the family. I love what starling. Did i love the visuals that went along with that. I cannot think of the artists offhand. That did death in the family. Death in the family I'm going to be like that's it. I can put it in there jim. A- pyro jimmy. Papa yes so paro jimmy when i think of death in the family we've been yola covers. We've got jim starling writing an amazing story. We've got a perot writing or excuse me. Drawing what is essentially.

"Do you think that would have some legs of just the JSA it could. I don't know because they're all dead so. I can't say no because who knows you know this is a world where the specter exists and it's very possible that we could just get mass resurrection or they all they didn't die. They got shifted over to Earth seven, hundred, forty, two. TV show do you think they could do it? I'd be I'm down four. Yeah. I'll take it like give it to me on HBO. Max. Even just give me like a six episode. We we are. We're living in great times for for nerd stuff like we've got the man delorean which I know my buddy Casey hasn't even watched season one of the mandatory delorean yet. Really. So yeah I he just hasn't even watched it. I. Know The like the trailer for season two's out. He's running out of time and he's the least cool person on the planet. So. How. Can you not I don't know yeah. But you're right I mean all you know net and see dot every everybody's looking for content so. Why not I wonder Dino Background Jeff Johnson he approached the CW or CW approach him I know that this has been in the works for a while. I know that they in the early days of Arrow, they were talking about doing a starman show and I know that this has been existing in some form. For a long time but I also know that Geoff Johns has been a writer on the CW shows for a long time even going back to season one of Aero. He wrote at least one or two episodes in that first season, he's been very hands on with all of this stuff. So my guess is E. D. at this point it doesn't really matter approach whom I think it's just kind of the ether and it seemed like with the launch of the DC universe ask this last year it seemed like a good time to introduce the concept. And, it seems to have been successful. In for another season renewed for another season, it's since the universe platform no longer exists It is going to go over to the CW and I'd be curious if that change of platform affects the quality of the show. I will say from strict like the I'm going GonNa go film nerd on you for a minute The Look of season one is very cinematic. It doesn't look like a TV show. It feels like you're watching a movie like a mini movie, every single episode the the production quality is very good to the point though where when stripe moves, it's very like. They have a model like a life size model of stripe. When he's just parked, they can be in front of him how things massive it's so cool. But when it's moving at CG and the CG, budget doesn't quite match the production budget. So there's a suspension of disbelief that's kind of required when you see stripe do like the little rocket punch in his fist comes off. It looks it looks great for what it is, but it's not gonna be like. A in two years we'll watch and be like Oh. This looks rough. But. The CG's minimal. Like we don't stripe. We see we with pat more than where with stripe and were with stripe. There's a lot of the US the Tony Stark thing where we'll see a lot of his head. We'll see like the heads up display and we don't necessarily see the armor and it's it's it's very it's very well paced..

"We know that it seems to have some kind of personality has a bond with her that somewhat investigated in the show, but never gone into great detail like in vendors the well in A. The movie with Doctor Strange Cape Yes. Exactly It's it's very similar to that. So she'll be asleep and then you'll hear show wake up to a tap on her window and she'll open up her curtains in the staff will just be floating out there and it's like come on let's go and she'll like she'll sit on it. Like she does like a like a surfboard type kind of she'll. She'll either use it like a surfboard or show right on it like a kind of like a bombshell thing we're she'll sit on it like. It's really cool I don't know how to describe it because I'm bad metaphor. Well, it's it. Now I assume obviously doesn't have the staff then she doesn't have any powers. Like residual energy that she still gets like four gets a certain amount of time I think no, no her powers are powers are very much tied to the staff. If she doesn't have the staff she's left to her because the bill the belt has no power in this this. Doesn't even show, but in the comic book gives in the comics, it does but also Jack Loses that pradier early. So. When when he started, he definitely loses that. There's a whole thing man one, one day will. Star Star but the bottom line is watch it on CW. Check it out and then. By the comic book, Get a cut out talked to me. If you WANNA know where to start all either point yet stars and Stripes if you. If you're not interested in that and you want to read some really good superhero stuff, I can't recommend Geoff. Johns run on JC enough it's completely finished. He actually co wrote the first few issues of that with James Robinson. And that very much. It starts with Jack on the team and then Courtney's introduced and Jack Basically gives her the staff and. Your star girl like just you carry on my. So you talked about they did some flashbacks with Jay. Would you like to see maybe two episodes three episodes showing what happened to the jazz say a little more detail or I'm waking up. If the pot is star girl and the be plot is courtney in highschool the see plot. Was the villains. The Deep Lot is JSA's we get a healthy dose of the JSA. There actually is an episode dedicated to what happened. Okay. Say Right on that and there's a lot of there's a lot of exposition that goes into it to the point where there's specific episodes that are named after characters and we learn about their legacy and their history, and I would absolutely love to see more of that I would be a spinoff series..

"So lutely hundred percent. In fact i would say if all you know. Is the tv show. Be very careful. Transitioning over to the comics. Because what you know in. The show is not going to be true for the comics. The same thing. I'm a fan of the legacy of this character. I'm a stargell fan. I'm a starman fan. I love all of that so when the show came out. I was super nervous because i was like i. I don't need it to be a beat for beat adaptation but i need recognition that the stuff i like matters some extent and i got that completely like with the first fifteen minutes of the first episode of the show. I was like all. we're safe. Where good they completely reverently. Hold the nights up to a place where they ought to be by nights. I mean ted knight and his sons david and jack to the extent where one of the biggest supporting characters in the star man comics is the shade. Who when ted the original star man was starman. His arch-rival was the shade. And in the comics you know that was in the forties in the comics. Take place in the nineties. And the shades basically immortal. And he's like. I'm kind of done being a bad guy. I'm bored with it. I'm gonna try being a good guy and he ends up being like one of the major supporting players. So here's your big spoiler warning for the end of Star girl season one. There's a post credits scene. And we don't see him specifically but there's a little bit of cloud and a little bit of a of a of a blur and oh my gosh you guys season. Two's been confirmed it's going. I don't remember. I think it's a. Cw exclusive because the universe app is going away but season two is happening and we're getting the shade and oh my gosh. Did you girlfriend have to tell you to be quiet. Yes also here's a fun thing to two of the main writers on the star girl. Tv show may be heard of them..

"That's just been sitting in. Mothballs so to speak for thirty years or more and resurrecting it for a new audience. I mean why not. Well you can only watch the same character so many times. The captain boomerang shore. I mean like we see 'em in the movies like he's been in the tv shows like it's okay or i don't wanna see the joker and the ridler and the penguin and i don't. I don't need to see ten million different versions of them. Show me icicle. Show me the magician. Show me like maybe. They'll bring an crazy quilt. I don't know that actually would be them. Rascal villain goes crazy. Quilt crazy quilt. Yeah he don't recognize. Don't worry about it. it's a thing okay. i. I'd rank him down there with the condiment king. Calendar man cal. Don't you don't we don't we. Don't talk about calendar. Go read the long halloween. Then we'll talk about Good but no what's really fun is most. I'd sing your general every man comic book reader. I like joe schmo. Jane schmo coming in. Just just read. Batman x men. Whatever they're they're not going to be as familiar as i am with doctor midnight and wild cat and star girl in in all of this stuff. They're not gonna know Again the green lantern. That's in the show is. Alan scott's green lantern. This isn't the green lantern from this has no ties to a green lantern corps It's so conceptually different. We also saw We also saw the helmet of the flash the name. Oh my guys the one from the sake eric. There you jay garrick we jay garrick helmet and i. I know his powers didn't come from the house. You see that and you're like oh my guys but somebody else sees like. I don't know what you're talking about. It's great to is in the room. Where the jsa stuff is you see like there's little pillars and on that. Let's say there's a pillar and on the pillar is a pillow and on top of the pillow is like green lanterns ring behind. That is a giant banner hanging from the ceiling. And it definitely. I'm not sure it's been a hot second since i've seen the show but in remembers it as like an alex. Ross painting of alan scott. I so behind jay. Garrick is like those. You've seen alex rusty. Yeah he's doing something very similar right now at marvel with their timeless variants. But it's kind of like that but with a black background in and you see all of the people rendered in like this alex. Ross looking to paint the blow your mind. It's so good. Speaking of obscure characters in star girl. Shining noah idea. Yeah okay this shining. Knight is a massive character in this show. Like to the point where i was thinking..

"And even Courtney Whitmore to an extent she's not related to the nights at all, but she's earned the right to be star girl So there's there's some really cool stuff about legacy and you'll hear me if if we ever do a whole episode on Starman, the thing you will hear say Ad Nauseam is legacy legacy legacy in that carries over into themes in star girl her. So it's interesting. We're living in a character that goes all the way back to the forties, and for some reason, it's a show here in twenty twenty and we're talking about it and it's relevant and that's super duper cool to me. Well, I just love the idea that the. The versions of like you said, Green Lantern Star man all that are actually. reboots of the characters from the forties. So just interested in now we're hearing it or seeing it all again to a whole new audience has no idea. Where this all came from, there's there's going to be so many people who are far. Far younger than I am who will not care that. There's that any star person existed before courtney and that's fine. They don't have to. That's that's completely fine but there's going to be those of us old people who are sitting in the corner like back in my day. Back in the night man was a man. Who she makes her first. Well, Courtney makes her first appearance back in ninety nine. No. Now Ninety, seven, ninety, seven believes. Okay. Okay. Yeah, she showed up in Stars and Stripes. Number One. And the only reason I know is ninety seven is because she was created by Geoff Johns. Who is one of the big wigs over at DC now one of the best comic book writers of this generation. But. One of the things that very much affected Geoff Johns was the loss of his sister she died in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, six in a plane crash. And her name was courtney. Elizabeth Johns and so would he first got his writing gig at DC they allowed him to revamp stripes and the Star spangled kid and the first thing he did was make the star spangled kid a girl and he named her Courtney Elizabeth Whitmore as a tribute to his sister passing because she was his sister I believe at just graduated high school. In, the article said she was getting ready to go to college. Yeah I think she was like seventeen or eighteen when she died. And that was something that just stuck with Geoff Johns and he thought you know if he could just write a comic and celebrate her legacy that way. and..

"My favorite that I actually have been commissioning. Comic Book Artists to draw different iterations of. Star people, I'm currently waiting on Gender Sima whose notable star wars artist. She did a lot of a lot of the clone wars era darker stuff. She also did star wars legacy. Both of those with John Stranger by the way which super. But I'm waiting on her she. For me of star girl, how many commissions do you have right now? Dr. Girl I guess one, two, three, four and a half. For the show notes, let's I'll have even get some pictures. Everybody can see but I'll I'll get them for you my my most recent. is a peach momento. And you man if if any of my normal patrons for for Rainbow, comics are are listening. They know how much I love. This. But yeah, I also had another. He's done from a supporting character of star man that was done by Kaelin Smith and anytime I get a chance to promote Kaelin Smith's work I. DO IT G Super Nice. Yeah. She she's got a she got a she just finished her kickstarter I can't push it. So. Bad. But now she's linked has heard information in the show and check her out if you haven't heard of her I, love her I love her so much. Anyway star girl. She's great. Are we done? Yeah. Well I wanted to ask you. Okay. So she's kind of a spin off of star man now real quick star man though got started way back. In the fifties four star man in the forties even. I know her kind of. Costume based on the Star spangled kid which was back in nineteen, forty one I did a little homework on that and all include some links and the show notes for some of the art and you can tell it's it's very screams forties, golden age type of artwork and. Punch a Nazis and all sorts of things. But that's kind of where her outfit I guess kind of came from. Ted Knight who was the first starman excuse me made his first appearance in adventure comics number sixty one in April of one thousand, nine, hundred, forty one. Okay. So okay. So this. This all the Star spangled kid stripe sees or whatever all that in that era. That's. It's like legit original JSA. Good stuff and James Robinson's run on Starman took every character who's ever born the name Starman and put them all together. When? We think of green lantern. We think of like how Jordan or the Green. Lantern Corps what we don't ever think of really and that's I'm speaking generally there's comic book fans who are like you're absolutely crazy. But before how Jordan existed in the sixty seventies, there was a Alan Scott was green lantern and he was completely different same with if we look at a lot of the JC heroes like the flash mister terrific Around the silver age of comics like the sixties and seventies DC made a push to reinvent all of their characters and really went for a Sifi take instead of like a mystical take or a strong man take. So we ended up getting a couple of different cosmic versions of star man who don't carry the night family name like Ted Knight David Night. Jack Night..

"Here for maybe comics again, he's he's practically a co host on here, but he is the comic book extraordinaire and we're going to talk a little stargell first off tell us why star girl is just so amazing. Star girl is amazing for a few different reasons. My favorite reason is. She's she's a legacy character. So a legacy character for you know I I use that term all the time. But for those of you don't know it means that she's not the first star person in continuity and that's true for the comic and it's also true for the TV show. So in the my familiarity with star girl is mostly from the comics, but I also finished season one of the show and I absolutely love it. So we'll maybe spoilers I. Guess we're better warn you and ahead of time we're GONNA definitely spoil all over it but I'm GonNa make sure that you're gonna even if not seen it if I spoil it for you, you're GONNA WANNA watch it, but star girl essentially is the most recent. Bearer of title Her name is Courtney Whitmore but she's she's part of the legacy of multiple iterations of what up until now I've been star. Man's not star men because they're different versions of star man. So there are. Multiples of Starman which would be man's. Multiple at the same time that would be start men men. Okay. His Star I was going to correct you and say. It's Definitely trust me. I have a master's in English. These these are star man's different verdict star man But this is star girl The staff that she carries was actually carried by Jack Knight who was the previous Starman in the comics in the TV show at Silvester Pemberton will get to him but this is a cosmic staff. It's a cosmic staff that was created by Jack's Dad Ted. Ted Knight created the technology for the cosmic cosmic staff and he actually when his dad who was starman during World War Two? Had he the prototype was the staff and he actually condensed it into a kind of a sceptre? Wasn't it cosmic? It was a cosmic cosmic. Rod. Rod and the gravity belt and the gravity belt helped him fly in the cosmic Rod. Was Little one that. Did basically with the staff does And things happen in Starman. I'm going to say this there's a starman run that was written by James Robinson with art primarily done by Tony, Harris and Peterson Edge Berg, and it came out in like. Man, when did it come out? I want to say, maybe ninety seven to like. Two, thousand, two, thousand, one something like that might have been ninety five I don't know the dates offhand I can look them up but there was a star Enron that spun out of the Zero year event. I believe it was was it yeah, and because it started with starman number zero. That comic going from zero all the way through starman number eighty to include a bunch of annuals and one shots and tie INS, and even going up to the Black Knight event that happened a few years ago they did starman eighty one to resurrect a dead series. Starman is my favorite comic of all time. Of all tied, saying a lot like I love I, Love Comics and I love elephant men is like still my favorite comic that's currently published but like If you put a gun to my head and you ask me what my favorite comic book is it is it is James. Robinson's entire run on Starman Okay and this is kind of a spin off of this very much like her legacy is Jack Legacy is David's a legacy is Ted's legacy is it to the point where it's so much?.

2020 Fall Movie Preview

"Hi everybody I am Peter Travers and welcome to this special edition of Popcorn where creed you all the movies opening between Labor Day and New Year's Eve I know wait what aren't we in a pandemic Will really be moved this fall and theaters to show them in I mean the answer to both those questions is a huge. Yes. Sixty two percent of all US theaters are open now and there's going to be more to come covid permitting, of course, and those movies that can't make it to the multiplex will be available for rental or streaming in sickness and in health people, you can't keep a good movie down. So let's start with the blockbusters that are out there. Number one is tenant. Brain Teasing epoch from Dark Knight Director. Christopher. Nolan. That's geared to fire up the fall season and in theaters and with your mask and distancing in place you can strap in for this kind of Christopher Nolan throw ride and watch the spy master he's played by John David Washington give James Bond a run for his money you know you just have to. Get your head around the physics in this movie. Maybe don't know about how you can go forward and backwards in time at the same time I don't know either I was a little confused by that but you'll be glued to the visual miracles that are on screen here every cent of tenants two, hundred, million dollars production budget shows up onscreen Eisele popped. Jaw dropped pulses. Oh, pound all that good stuff movies and back baby. So what else do we have? We have Moulin which is out there right now and you'll check in Disney plus to watch this because it's not in theaters but you can rent it and you could see live action film of the Disney animated hit about a young woman who disguises. Herself as a man to replace her sick father in the Imperial Army the new moon is not musical and there's no comic relief from eating Murphy as the Voice of a fast talking dragon named Moo Shu. This is not that kind of movie. There's no whitewashing but using Western actors in the drawn from Chinese legend and as Rouland the astounding Lou ye. Leads in Asian cast that includes martial arts icon jet. Li is the emperor up and China's leading actress Gong Li as shape shifting witch who teaches on how to survive and prosper in a man's world. Look move on is not your typical princess. She's a warrior fighting for her place in the world prepare to be well. Next up wonder woman one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, four, the sequel to the two thousand seventeen smash that made a star of Gal. Gadot, remember her places the DC comics immortal wonder woman into the cold. War where she does battle with the media tycoon played by Pedro Pascal and the villainous Cheetah played by Kristen Wiig always to me an asset in any movie Chris. Pine also returns Steve Trevor The American. Pilot that one woman loves I know didn't he die the last time during World War? One people you gotta go with this this is Hollywood. So if we can borrow wonder woman's last sube truth for a moment, credibility isn't the issue here. It's the show stopping stunts engineered by returning director Petty Jenkins executed by Godot, and she's a formal Israeli military structure. So you know you're in for a really good time. Next up is black widow look wonder woman has competition already. You know we've been waiting since spring for Marvel to let its first solo black widow epic out of storage and into theaters. Now, the wait is over Scarlett. Johansson is back in action as Natasha Romanoff Aka black widow. She's the Russian assassin with no superpowers road just skills she's like the female Batman this Prequel looks back, Arjun story in it's a doozie forints pugh is there as Natasha, surrogate says sister and Rachel Vice is the leader of this black widow organization. It's not just one black widow you can become a black widow tells witness business. So Watch your back wonder woman next up candyman there's nothing like the Primo horror. Film to get us all back in the dark of a theater where we can scream bloody hearts out behind a mask of course, end with get outs Jordan peele writing the screenplay. This direct sequel to nineteen ninety two's cult fright fest stars Watchmen Emmy nominee Jadu Martine the second as a visual artist drawn back to those housing projects in Chicago's Cabrini-green where he was born now the whole place is gentrified beyond recognition but the green is still haunted by Candyman Tony Todd an urban legend who still kills anyone who summoned him by saying his name five times. Okay. Altogether now with me candyman candyman candyman candyman candyman, we did it. So I'm looking around here to see if some him up. Okay next up no time to die look no red blooded movie Fan is GonNa Think of missing Daniel. Craig's fifth and final outing James Bond you know for my money Craig and Sean Connery are in dead heat for the best bond ever. This one directed by Kerry from Gonzaga who did true detective from Script Co written get this by sleeping bags phoebe Wall Rich Daniel Craig asks for her because he really wants a little feminist touch to this. This is the. Twenty fifth, all seven Cape and you know this is a record and we're GONNA lose Daniel Craig. But in the movie James Bond's been retired for five years and he gets called back in. You know that's what happens to everybody from the Godfather on. You know Bohemian Rhapsody oscar-winner. Rami ballot plays the facially scarred villain named SAFM and he's described the director as more dangerous than anyone bond has ever encounter. Man How about you?

Everything we know about The Rock's antihero movie 'Black Adam'

"Okay, So the rock, right? I'm already interested. No, right. This is I mean, this is dark too. I think and quote unquote heavy. So are you familiar with black Adam? I am not so black. Adam is a fictional character who appears in the DC comics. And I guess he first appeared as a one time villain. For the first issue of the Marvel family comic book in like 1945, but Black Adam was revived. Ah has a recurring character. After D C comics first licensed and then acquired faucet characters, blah, blah, blah. Then it just goes, they begin publishing what was the captain? Marvel family stories? And she exam so it goes back to all of that, and he was a corrupted ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel. Okay? So black, Adam fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his Marvel Family associates. But now he's been redefined by DC comics writers. And so he is going to be black Adam, who is ranked as whose I G n Idea. It's like a movie website. OK, 16th greatest comic book villains of all time. So so he's going to be a villian. Interesting. Well, you know what in wrestling fans will remember this aboutthe rock? He plays a great A great villain because he was hell for many years, meaning like a bad guy, okay? And and he was fantastic as a hell still likeable, Which makes him sort of like an anti hero, but but really, really good. So So if you're having trouble thinking, we'll wait. The rock is always so winsome and always the good guy. He could play the bad guy in a way that there will be some people rooting for the bad guy sort of not Not in the same way in terms of what the performance will be like. But you know, Heath Ledger's turn. Is the Joker in the Dark knight. You're You're like you want another joker senior, like, Bring back the Joker. I want to see Joker get ultimately you're hoping for good to win out. But I wonder if the rock as a quote unquote villain will have

To, copy do something silly like that. Oh. Yeah. Actually write something. Yet it I I we to take over DC comics. Remember. Just burned to the ground or plug us on kickstarter so we can say these comics. Or? Going to sell it you'd have you'd have an easier time trained by Archie Comics Lois. No Sir, they are very small company. No I know that. But they're not owned by anyone who wouldn't sell them. They actually have a plan. Comet that's what it feels like. Drive I. Don't know if they don't WanNa deal with it anymore. The price down, twenty Back like they don't want to deal with it anymore. They gave them the right offer Disney. Disney early hope. Disney owns a superhero line. Why would he the second one? Look how much much Much money on endgame. Now imagine you do another city? Just. Look how look how popular civil war was now is just marvel characters. Now imagine a more civil war marvel versus DC. Okay but five billion dollars at the box office. I kind of that. I have there's a question whether or not box office is even thing that anyone is looking to the Disney, a company of futurists how much they look the idea of As a concept. Halo home saying is they have recently looked like future because they've made a lot of very slow. Beginning with good a wall in. They're still stillborn. Some people are the I mean they own. One act like they're too cool for school. But when you get into billions, they're all painted all they're paying attention Charlie Dylan, you billions. Yeah. There I'm not saying they're not paying attention. I'm just saying you know he's very good about their breeding. Winter and they're. And they're and they're good at the long game unlike sea. Is that it comes to this idea. So if Will sell you our property for a billion dollars I mean obviously, they'll say. A billion sheriff fine whatever. I mean hockey I mean how did they say like two billion which is like an exponentially a larger amount they're going to say no probably not. Go. She eight down to the one billion whatever they really wanted yet. But I mean how much they spend for Marvel and Star Wars. They've made their money back on those. Yes. But they've already but that's the thing they already have those markets now. So it's like you know they bought star, wars, marvel they said you know. Send. On the show just. Come on. Come on Disney we can finally have back Patty did. The thing is, is that. You're properties of value. Properties about because they do. Spiderman. Thing is. Be of value also become competitive properties to the properties already own. So I mean to put it to you simply the only reason to by DC it's. DC compete with marvel. They could DC charter yes. They could do that Charlie Charlie if they own both, do you think they care of morals beats DC or DC? Beats Marvel? No, the money's going the same place. Except that, they've already know. Divisions work now. They've already invested in all the marvel properties and to start to try to to try and and let's not forget Disney Marvel after they proved they had value true. You know they didn't. Make money. Let's. Make money. It's just not what they yet. Bigger in the red. But that's the thing. That tation the. In the right hands Disney is. These valuable. Yeah. But they're not in the right that's what I'm saying if Disney. Mom Dad has a has a has a thing that could be dangerous in the wrong hands and he's holding it. It's like, yes Disney DC holds things that would be great if DC wasn't holding it, but DC is holding it so they're not valuable. Could be better. I. Think. There's the potential for greatness there D. ticket by the raw material. Already great. There's a potential for excellence and there's a difference. There's a big green. Up Between Greg. Yes, peculiar can weekly local. The last couple years Warner has brought that brand down a little bit sir I mean. On the same token, we have things like the highly animated series. I, know. and. Bad. Making all great again. I will give the animated series prime. Book that will sell in and sell no matter how many four Three looks out right now different ones. Or something? Mini series but I don't know. But I I know after next week seventy, five reboot with a new number one in. Israel say okay if. So let's say, let's say let's counterfactual and say that Harley, the Harley Quinn movie did beat expectations. Never. Happened Science fiction no could have happened. DC, is very much afraid to lose money, which is a weird thing for American Corporation did not. To be afraid of I mean yes. Losing money is not good but losing money is also sort of bakes into the American. Capitalist Structure Yeah but do you think big data money to make money? Yeah. But I mean if it's coming from higher up. Choice at the terrible choice though at some point like this has been of networks for about. Eight months did know they were going to actually do this? Pretty big news or and honestly for the. Or the forty fifty cent that's where you get your news. So. They actually are very big in politics, leave it out but anyway. Back. To back to the original story. Is it possible that at and T. basically bought Warner's and basically said? What we buy, why did we buy this? This is a mass. You know we we kind of we wanted we wanted those cable lines, but it's like the at the end of the day. This is this a bunch of content that is it's like walking into my comic book collection where there's just comics all over the floor. Ninety don't say. I'm not a collector I'm a reader and it's like i. read it once it's in the volts little. He reads them once you don't know where they go. Yeah Who knows but anyway and that's when Mandela gets to rewrite them for me. Mandela's a much better writer than most comic books you've ever read. They came in they said, this is a mess and it's like, okay. Well, what are we gonNA do with this mess because wars was making all kinds of decisions before we got here and for some reason before we got here, they decided to push through a bunch of decisions instead of just like what any? Sane. Would do his most sink corporations when they're about to get bought out. Okay. Don't make any big moves. Sit Let us hold our value. that it wasn't really his. Push that through. Right, hind it the knew what was going on and kind of said. Okay. Well that sucks. 'cause. Avian, pretty, decently structured company outside the before they did this mergers address. Okay. A lot of people are like they're singer gathered top and things like that but it wasn't like racist just jar chaos like i. just I just never seen such. Sony was in a state of disrepair. It was not as bad but I get the feeling. This is a lot of ripping off the kind of stuff. That's all it's GonNa hurt now. But now. What we're GONNA. Especially in the comic book world. I know again, that's the biggest company biggest. Designed by public and that's and that's the biggest thing that hit me this week is just like you know they're the domes next weekend and it's just like, oh? Hey, come celebrate with us at this virtual corn after we just laid off hundreds of people. Yeah. I mean I see nothing really I still don't all I know of DC fandom is apparently we get to walk around Titan Sour. Really big huge Berlitz is. Nearly. Done a push scour all over it. It's just it's panels on like the different shows and stuff right? Love. And again, it's but it's Ok Talk Whatever Disney does whatever that eat three thing that they do. That's what this was supposed. Louis had why would you do like this mass like you know lay offs in stopped like a week or two before you do this big con everybody's GonNa Nobody has the on Vincent. which is the only reason why I'm going to. I'm just waiting and waiting and not for nothing again, like I said, who's ever decision, it was to just blow up the company. So, everything all at once just. Like I said. Okay I've companies have been bought been many companies that have just recently been bought I bet companies that have been in transition and looking for buyers. Everytime in that spot the the main thing is okay this is what we do. We do we do. We're not going to do something new because it's going to be. We don't want to inject cast into this. You know. The most ever see is like someone's GonNa say what's push this bonus through? These days before the new boss. and Try to talk. Exactly know that kind of okay. I can get the idea that Oh let's let's launch a new service to compete with Disney was even. The works yes and That it's not even it's like it's just DC content. that. Almost assuming that Disney was just marvel- it's like the trying to one. Marvel. But. We're getting onto. College and get their visit ministry they wanted to they wanted to be there I, and it's like who cares if you're there I if you're. GonNa. Cases. Yeah is cramped. Yeah. They're not competing with marvel this thing I don't think moral thinks are competing with. Is. Eating with all media. Marvel is one of the things o'meara wants to do. It's be Disney's best henchmen. They want that doctor girlfriend spot. DC NOBODY Understands anything it's very appeared in. Can't, one Dino I didn't mind now my. Third. Time I used to say now I get it I'm still not gonNA. Apologize if he needed to go on. With a terrible idea and I'm glad they're not willing to do with that. At the cost of everything else I didn't want to be right at the cost of everything else. Chance. So now five G. now that I know that they're saying. This was like supposed to be the fifth generation of Super Heroes. Burns as Miami Janet. Yelling. On your phone like like you know the whole gimmick where someone takes over for the for the main hero, they were going to do that with a lot of their heroes at once. Yeah. What low I thought I saw an article today I, don't know if this is going to be a mini series now or announced worlds or something just like a off to the side thing but are they still print that Luke Fox takes over as Batman thing. Imagine actually to do that old tight to everything that's. In the family, let's be honest. They don't need that controversy the only. The only thing I could see them doing Bruce Wayne and Luke Fox. So they kind of have like their Peter Parker Miles, morales things that what they're trying to go for. Like. I don't know how old these people are..

talk box office as well we'll catch up when I was off last week for the Academy Awards but Steve you did see birds of prey the Harley Quinn thing yes hi would you think well I mean it this is a film that once very desperately for us to believe that it's a G. and twisted in the NBA wanted so much to kind of forget to actually be edgy and twisted it keeps telling us how it deals with the the the and that's not to say that the the latest DC comics movie century isn't doesn't have its moments but certainly Margot Robbie's is was among the highlights of this sort of a spin off of suicide squad and she was certainly one of the highlights of that film but it is fun at times I I I like I can honestly say I can't think of a movie I've seen more recently they are seen so many people work so hard to convince me they're having a good time and yet the it's sort of extraordinarily conventional at the same time unlike unlike suicide squad which is sort of put together by a government agency the birds of prey kind of come together more naturally joker isn't actually in the sermon and by the way I should make it clear we're talking at the joker not the current dot that most recent joker iteration but the jerit letto joker from a couple years ago but he's not in this it doesn't matter but that doesn't stop the screenwriter who Christine at Hudson who did bumble bee which is actually a pretty good script from from sort of leaning into his influence on this whole story when were re introduced a Harley Quinn she and and joke or have just broken up which apparently means that any protection that she has being affiliated with him is gone so suddenly all the criminals in Gotham when the killer and I'm not exactly sure why but she has done some horrible things in the past I guess one of the people she has wronged is there is a crime boss this play by you and McGregor who goes by the name black mask something of sort of a flashy party boy E. but he kind of seems to have one speed in one elevated volume when he speaks he basically like rip Taylor in a black skull mask so he's more obnoxious than threatening the the hit the side kick that's played by Christmas Cena whose actually way more sort of deviant sinister and then black mass gives but we don't really get to see him that much but the the what happens is that they these these email characters all kind of come together some of them are more superhero oriented like a crossbow wielding huntress is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and then there's care during black Canary's played by journey small at bell and there's a young girl name Cass who's play ballads a Bosko is a police detective Renee mon twenty it was played by Rosie Perez and I gotta say of all of all the of all those characters Winstead in parens really kind of stand out I guess not surprisingly and it's it's actually kind of really great just to be reminded how much of a presence Rosie Perez can be and that when given the chance and given this kind of exposure and and sort of elevated in this way there is a far more interesting aspects of birds of prey than just the action of the actions not bad there's sort of a subtext about what happens to people when they sustain prolonged abuse or other forms of violence most of lead characters are suffering from some form of PTSD or another in the sort of find unique ways to cope with that it's a it's a shared condition that brings these women together and bonds them and makes them not only surprisingly strong as a team but but it's also sort of a new weird little group therapy thing the film doesn't address this directly but it's sort of hard not to hard to miss it like get a you know a like most things in birds of prey it's not exactly subtle but anyway the the I guess of the action sequences are kind of a mixed bag of sort of standard issue cases in explosions in fighting and with a few sort of clever original and and a little bit bloody idea sort of sprinkled in but a few case you're in curious birds of prey is actually yes very rated R. the some there's some gory violence there's some liberal usage of four letter words but I'm guessing the under age folks who will be speaking into this movie will not be traumatized by anything that they see it's got a great Sir high energy soundtrack to really bombastic score by Daniel Pembleton and and enough sort of deviance from Robbie and company to the keep it interesting mobile when the problem with the film is the bad guy even the Gregory is terrible in this he looks like he's having a good time but you know the thing I hate more than anything else in the world in movies is watching someone have fun yeah because it does not this I don't know I don't know what someone on a roller coaster I want to get on the roller coaster like so that's sort of the problem here and okay when DC finally figures out their bad guy problem they're gonna probably for anyway but that to me it's a mixed review but but that's about I got a I don't know if it's positive or negative all

Already courting controversy, 'Joker' looks to open huge

"Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter and Matt Hat Joker Joker from Warner. Brothers looks like it is going to open really huge. This is a movie from Todd Phillips. It is very very dark and there has been a lot of alarm about whether this movie could incite violence and I hate to talk that way about a movie that hasn't opened yet that people people haven't seen but this is escalated into a serious thing and it's a thing that some of the executives at warners apparently were concerned about when they decided I did to make it in the first place. Yeah I have seen it and I understand why people are fearful of this movie. It is extremely dark extremely violent. It does offer a sympathetic portrait of this villainous killer but it's also extremely artistic and well-made and impactful impactful and if you talk to Todd Phillips he says you know it's not my responsibility to think about what the impact might or might not be of this film. It's is my responsibilities and artists to make a great film and I think that's where the debate is. Yeah I mean I I had heard from my sources. You know going back to this issue. Shula the decision to make it that warners kind of ambivalent about an actually came up with a low budget a relatively low budget about sixty million. I think maybe hoping hoping that it would kind of get killed because Toby Emmerich runs warner brothers and whom had to make this decision you know he he doesn't want to not be filmmaker. Friendly especially Todd Phillips has delivered some successful movies hangover and so it so he was a guy. They want to be in business with at the same time. I'm sure they're thinking about the brand and does this do something thing to the DC comics brand in fact the head of DC comics. We heard was initially very concerned on supposedly ultimately came around but he so whatever low the budget he may have said they they met it or they came close and and the thing did get made. It's almost like you know. Maybe he got toby. EMMERICK got a little bit pregnant with by saying I'm going to try and make this. An undesirable date and Todd Phillips is like I'm there for that day yeah and now it's probably going to be a big success. I mean I the movie got amazing reviews out of Venice one the festival it was named best film at the Venice Film Festival and it's probably going to have an Oscar campaign as well so right now it seems like a win for the studio but there is this other side where if you are making a movie that is based on Conic Comic Book Characters and and you take that Ip and turn it into a dark violent nihilistic and really disturbing portrait talk of a mentally ill murderer. Do you have any responsibility when you put that out into the world and and we'll say that warners has been very clear. This is an R. rated movie. It's not for children. There are no toys associated with this film they they are making clear in the marketing materials that it is not like your typical. DC comics movie but some kids are probably going to see this year. Yeah I mean the other thing is that they clearly were somewhat nervous about it because they sold old off half of it to other investors and there's other investors are probably happy right now and worse. We'll still make a lot of money but you you know that was a hedge against what if people really react negatively to this but however based on the early tracking the box office is going to be huge I will say. I don't know if the academy how they how how they react I mean they've done dark movies before. Joaquin Phoenix is seen as favourite Oscar race but sometimes controversy is bad for for for Academy Award Contenders sometimes and sometimes it might be the thing that breaks through the clutter and this is a visionary film so it might be the distinguishing factor yeah. I just hope this all this talk about. The potential for violence doesn't increase the potential for violence. Thank you matt. Thank you Melanie aditorial director of the Hollywood reporter.

"Story. The biggest story today is I thought it was the report. But apparently, it is it is the fact that Jason momoa shaving his beard off. Jason momoa was. Interesting shaving his beard. So so was that his thing you'd have a beard. I mean, so his look I mean guys find for whatever it is. I don't think he's particularly talented actor personally, but his claim to fame is that he is a very attractive cut individual with kind of a gruff, look, and he plays a superhero. He he's. Yeah. He played up barbarian character on game of thrones. And then he got the role for aquaman any played aquaman and Justice league. And then in the Auckland movie is that part of your whole deal. No, that's DC. Dismissive Toronto run run thought he was telling Garrett something that you'd be scared say, you know, as a marvel comic nerd, so he thought he was telling you something that that he'd wanna know. And Jason momoa, whatever I was thinking. Wow, you're like dismissing Ron what's that? And now, we know he doesn't replace for the wrong team plays for DC comics interest. I said to my goal. So judging by your reaction, not that's not that big story is well it is you're interested as beard. Dismissive excuse, right. Right. Don't get me wrong. I liked DC movies. I thought I thought it was a very fun movie was fine in it. I just I'm not a big trip back. All

Breaking Down 'Shazam!'

"Finds itself at an interesting inflection point. I would say I thought she was a very fun and entertaining movie, but it did not really feel like anything that had come in the DC universe before. And you kind of explain to me. What should I am is? And what it's trying to do. Sure. I mean, I kind of had the. To do the same thing after watching the movie because like right around the time the post credits scene with a evil Caterpillar happened. I was kinda like I've no idea what any of this stuff is. So thankfully, Mike does have a a piece on the ring dot com. A great website kind of breaking down the kind of Kazan origins. But yeah, he's he was actually originally called captain marvel and like in the movie there was like a wizard named 'schisms who gave him like all these superpowers. But when he sorta got folded into DC comics because marvel had its own captain marvel he then became Zam. But the whole spiel is basically the same thing like the wizards powers you activate it by saying Zam, and then I guess in the big conversion you just become buff, Zachary Levi. Yeah, I didn't even know buff Zachary Levi was going to be a thing that I would ever have to talk about. I can't say when I was watching Chuck ten years ago. That this ever crossed my mind that he would be a superhero, I think Tony Lee. This movie is pretty significantly different from superman vs Batman and the Justice league films and even wonder woman, which I thought was you know, is a very charming and obviously hugely successful movie. But there is a lightness in the tone, and it's not quite as operatic goofy. As was l-. You know, what did you make of the kind of movie that Sam was trying to be yet? No, I thought it was fun at kind of had like almost throwback Amblin entertainment coming of age vibe like something you'd see from like Amblin in like the eighties. But with the caveat that instead of a kid going on venture or something he can just become a superhero. But I thought it was a it was it was kind of an appropriate tone for for the kind of here that this guy is and I kind of like that, you know, a kid like a teenager becoming Kazan like he has like a bit of an aimlessness to him at the beginning. Like, there's not the sort of great power with great with great power comes great responsibility type speech. You just sorta has to learn things on the fly Yemen. One of the first things that the character does after he realizes his powers as he just goes to a convenience store in buys beer and candy. And you know, I it, you know, the movies clearly pitched as sort of what if big, but superhero, and it's very effective in showing us like maybe not with the real world ramifications would be because it's a little bit different in tone in the real world. But some of the like aspirations that you have as an adolescent, and the things that you wish you could do when you were thirteen sham does for the first hour of this movie, and the movie ultimately just becomes a story about like friendship and the way that we act bigger and older than we are. And what we can get away with in that time. And then it does turned into a little bit of a superhero movie. What did you make of the kind of balancing of those tones? Yeah. I mean, I think I did prefer sort of the the first half of the move. In that respect, as you know, there are so many superhero movies out there. And I think for the most part it's sorta gets derivative to when the movie gets the guy discovers his powers, you know, like Peter Parker, like scaling skyscrapers type of thing. But it was fun for Suzanne because it felt very like very genuine response. What if a fourteen year old kids suddenly had powers like, yeah? He would try to buy beer. He would go to script strip club in like beam about the chicken wings because this is a PG thirteen movie. You know, if he's in a world where superman Batman exists, and he doesn't really know. What to do is? You just if he can't find people to save is he just going to he's going to try to make cash and become a YouTube star. It was an interesting approach. But I think like I preferred that half of the movie versus like, the Mark strong shows up with seven CGI deadly sin, archetypes, or whatever. And it's time to punch him a lot. Yeah. I agree. I don't think part was active. It's funny because it feels like a movie like this, which is not exactly a reinvention. But is a is a reconsidering of what these kinds of movies can be still does arrive and its conclusion at the notion that needs to feature a lot of punching and a lot of fighting the bad guy. I'm curious to see if as we grow inside, the D C E U, I guess much like Zam. If they'll ever change the the the approach that they take having kind of the final showdown in the final forty five minutes of the movie that was also one of my struggles. Honestly with wonder woman, which I thought as I said was really clever and well made and then ultimately just turned into Diana fighting a demon monster who was played by David through Lous. What do you make of the decisions that DC is now making to singular is each of their movies? I mean, it's interesting because like, you know, they they did a pretty quick pivot from like fast-tracking their Justice league movie which end up being like relative to the expectations a bit of a bomb for them. Also, it didn't really track critically. But you know, they're kind of like making these films that have this very little interconnectivity like aquaman was only really playing the seeds for Auckland to and I guess a trench spinoff, which I could go on like a twenty minutes handed about the trench about the trend. Can't wait for the trench. And like kind of the same thing with wonder woman sequel in feels that way, which is. To you know, if it does well enough at the box office like affiliates just leading into sham two or maybe like a black atom movie, which is like a sham villain. That's supposed to be played by Dwayne Johnson. If you look at like the C projects that are in the air like a rebooted suicide squad, James Gunn, new bad movie. Perhaps a flash movie there's all these other projects like the one glaring omission is there are no plans to make like a Justice league to and not to say that would never happen again. But clearly like the D C you right now is content. Just kind of throwing stuff out there and seeing what resonates with audiences yet. If you look down there slate, we talked about this a little bit during the release of aquaman, but I was just in add an in Vegas at cinema Khan. And they were very proud of the approach that they were taking telling their stories because the next the next handful of movies. They have is of course, Zam, and you know, they also have joker which is coming in October. Which also feels quite standalone seems to have virtually nothing in common with the movie Lakesha Zam. And then there's also a birds of prey which is. Theon story of sort of five superhero team that will also include Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, and that totally and visually looks completely different from those other two movies. And so they've taken this decision to not just make that flash movie and not just make whatever inevitable green lantern movie. And with the same kind of stormy visualises that that Zack Snyder created, but to just kind of individually each story, which is what a lot of comic books are actually a lot of comic books have separate illustrators. They have separate writers their tones are quite different amazing spider. Man could be quite different from x men and superman could be quite different from, you know, detective comics, and what's going on with that, man. And of course, I guess next year late next year. We'll have the Batman which Matt Reeves Batman movie. Do you know, your your very closely track the comp films for us is it more interesting to you of all of this the fits together or do you like it better? If it stands alone and the movies get to be what they are. Well, I. Kind of like maybe I just have a bit of a marble fatigue. Just because it feels like we've been preparing for endgame like just just forever. But yeah, I kind of like this approach because you know, like, if something doesn't, you know resonate with with audiences like I personally wasn't as big of a fan as as wonder woman as other people were which is fine. You know, I I like parts of it. But, but you know, for the most part people really enjoyed it. And I think you know, it's an interesting approach. I think what will probably be most interesting is with wonder woman command and Zam they've all been pretty well received. And they've made a good amount of money. I'm curious what happens like how the DC EU responds when something flops with critics audiences in the box office. Do they like shake it off? Or if it's like, if it's bracing a certain tone, like, you know, let's say joker is actually quite terrible. And and you know, it's like a Scorsese prestige that. Just kind of doesn't work like will the DC you kinda void being that experimental. Again. I I'm curious to see what happens when there's kind of like a speed bump on the road for them. I am too is an interesting question because it does seem like in with Shas AM and most likely joker and handful of these other movies. They don't come with that two hundred and fifty million dollar production price tag. You know, they're definitely smaller movies with more modest ambitions, at least in terms of the execution of the movie. And so the risk is lower. So if let's say joker is not the sort of world-beating, cultural colossus that many would have us believe this week. That's okay. I think that they could probably survive that. And it's an you're right. It is a really interesting pivot away from all of that interconnectiveness. Is there anything else about his that you you really liked and you responded to? Yeah. I really like that, you know, I thought Zachary Levi was was just so good at like kind of capturing basically like, you know, a kid in a swollen dealt spot ended it so well like there were times where you almost felt to childlike for guy who's still like fourteen years old, but you could tell he was just having such a blast. And and yeah, I would have never expected Chuck would be like a swollen superhero. But I never expected Jim from the office to like, you know, make some hard movie also become buffer like Michael bay film. So I I guess, you know sick. I'm stars. They can transform. Yeah. Could you cast a sitcom debauche sitcom figure into into a superhero movie right now is there? Anybody springs to your mind? Is Jim Parsons our next. Green lantern. You think? Oh god. No, no. I'm trying to think of like if someone from parks and rec ado that transformation that isn't Chris Pratt. Because I mean, he's he's just forget about this point. He's he's like a discount printing. Frazier. But he he has done that as well. I mean, I guess maybe if if Adam Scott were cast as as galactic that would probably that. That's as close as we're gonna get

Audio Drama

"Today. We're going to look at an audio drama for marvel then we'll go old school and visit a comic from ancient Rome in the late sixties. So let's get in and out. The long night podcast is an audio drama based on the marvel character will rain, I hope they do more of these in the future this podcast came out. I think only a few months ago and shortly after I wrote this it was announced that they would do a second season called Marvel's wolverine. The loss trail being in the audio world. I know this type of storytelling can be just as difficult to make as a comic book. Now. Don't get me wrong. Both are great. And they tell a story, but they're both taxing on their creators. I've listened to many old time radio broadcasts. And that's how this podcast is done. And they're fun to listen to if you haven't listened to any of those old audio dramas, I suggest you do it on clued Lincoln the show notes to some old audio drama. People have posted on archive dot org. Audio has the good and bad benefit of not being a complete medium the difference between a TV show, and the audio drama is not everything is thrown at you. When you watch something on a screen, you're giving both. Visual and the audio. Your brain doesn't have to fill in any of the gaps with audio your brain has to draw the pictures of the scenes that the characters is scenes and the characters for you based upon what you hear and what your mind can conjure in the podcast in world the fiction genre has seen an increase in popularity in the last year. I believe this will continue to be the case over the next few years. Now, it assume that you're a fan of audio because you're listening right now, it's a personal medium. And what I mean is it's not something you typically listen to as a group. It's your player of choice in a pair of ear buds the tests on how good a podcast or audio book is is when you're listening in the car in it prevents you from getting out if it does then that's a good podcast or audio book or audio drama, whatever you wanna call it. I wanna take you back in the way back machine to the late nineties. I listened to a lot of books on tape back then because back then the word. No podcasts you had to rewind. If the previous person didn't and the portable tape player used just seem to go through AA battery so fast. I'm sounding like an old man yelling at kids get off my lawn. But anyway, fast forward to today and the effort to listen to audio like most things is almost friction lists. You can listen to whatever you want whenever you want. It's not like radio where you have to listen to whatever they want you to listen to also the barrier of entry to produce podcasts or audiobooks is much easier than it used to be. I'm not saying either as easy the -bility to get your product to the consumers relatively easy compared to ten years ago. Just like in previous episodes. I've talked about the barrier of entry as lower which is a good thing for all of us in my opinion. If you like a particular podcast, please let them know. Sometimes we as podcasters wondering. Hello, hello. Is anyone listening all the podcasters? I've talked to and listened to they all. All one hundred percent agree that when they get an Email from a listener, it gives them a huge boost. It helps them be more excited for the next episode. I think this would be a good idea for most of the things that we consume whether it's a blog post or a simple piece of digital art. Let the creator. No that you like it. It doesn't have to be lengthy a simple. Good job. Keep up the good work. We'll do wonders for creators morale. And that's why I try to do as many shoutouts to the people who contact who make contact with me. I hope you will give them a look in get some value from them, and let them know that they are putting out good content. Now, it's comic book review time, and I have two great books. I think you'll enjoy the first one is Britannia from valiant. And here's the solicit ruled by the fates manipulated by the gods commanded by Caesar in the year, sixty five AD one's destiny was not his own at the height of Niro's rain veteran Roman imperial warm. Sheen has been dispatched to the farthest reaches of the colonies to investigate unnatural happenings in the remote outpost of Britannia and Taina sacks. Yeah. The first detective will become Rome's only hope to reassert control over the empire's most barbaric frontier and keep the monsters that bridge the line between myth and mystery at bay. This is the first of three volumes released as of this recording in all three are fabulous in my opinion. Peter Milligan keeps the dialogue moving along nicely. He's the writer and also keeps you wondering about who did it until the very last page, then the art by one Jose Reeb goes into such detail and seems to get the period piece correctly. He's meticulous about every single little detail, for example on one page. We see our hero and Thomas walking down the streets as he and he draws the details of each street vendor down to the apples and carrots, and strawberries that they're selling as I mentioned. Inde the veteran. Legionnaire Taina's AXA axiom is a detective who has hesitantly working for the mad Imber Nero. I guess to sum it up. It's imagined Sherlock Holmes being thrust back into Roman times to solve crimes for the empire. When I first saw the solicit last year, I just really wasn't interested. But then I saw it again about a month ago. And I couldn't stop reading all three volumes. If you're a Roman history fan, you'll love it. If you're not you will still appreciate the art. And the amazing story that they've put together now side note, if you want to hear a great Roman history podcast the history of Rome by Mike Duncan is amazing. It's an older one. But it's still a great podcast might goes out of his way to get everything as accurate as possible. He starts with the founding of Rome by Romulus and Rimas and ends with the last western emperor, enforce seventy two AD. It's a fantastic simple way. To learn about Roman history. And I will include linked to the history of Rome podcast in the show notes. The second comic. I wanna talk about is the secret six which first appeared during the initial teams seven issue title secret, six from may nineteen sixty eight to may nineteen sixty-nine. Unusually the premiere issue story began on the cover and continued on the interior page. One this strike team of covert operatives. Consisted of August. Durant? Lili de never Carlo Duran's a Mike tempest crimson, dawn and king savage. Now, the second comic I wanted to talk about was called the secret six by DC comics, the first appeared during the initial tee teams seven issue run titled the secret six for may nineteen sixty eight to may nineteen sixty nine Carl Smith friend of the show who's a writer with the patriot. By the way, include a link to his patriot in the show notes. Checkout had mentioned the secret six a long time ago. I decided to check it out. I like the simplicity of the. Retelling? There's not a whole lot of complicated characters and in depth storylines. Basically the team has given an assignment, and they are tasked by completing the assignment one story is to recover the stolen jewels. Another is to seal steal some plans for secret jet before the communist, get them. Sometimes a personally wants to read a simple action issue and be done with it. We don't need a whole lot more. Like all teams though, each member has their own set of set of skills and abilities in which there are six of them. Hence the secret six title. This allows a story to us each member to complete their missing mission. Although the title is fifty years old. I still like the storytelling the fact that it is fifty years old as part of the fun. You can tell it was written at the height of the Cold War because the reader hears the word Kami multiple times. And it's a it's a product of its time. Also, the old stew school ads are interesting and funny like the two man submarine for only six dollars and ninety cents or. Selling greeting cards for amazing prices and own clued. The pictures of some of these ads in the show notes. I'm guarantee you most of you out there will recognize him. If you read any comics from even the eighties. A lot of these ads were still in now, she number one. They started the story on the cover which is a unique thing to do. And I'll try to include a picture of that in the show notes as well. But check it out. It's it's difficult to find. But it is still out there. I think they've collected them into a trade paperback, but I would strongly recommend just taking a look at it. It's a it's a good fun throwback to the

Superheroes from the fantastic. Four and the Black Panther to the hulk iron man in Spiderman he also witnessed their evolutions from comic books to TV film, the internet and video games. But it all started modestly at a comics company. Called timely Lee was all of seventeen fetching coffee and doing other menial tasks eventually timely became marvel with TV exploding in the fifties. Comics turned to more lurid stories and racy images to keep up sales. Parents didn't like it one bit. But as publishers took the edge off sales began to slip by nineteen sixty one with marvel on the ropes, STAN Lee. -sidered quitting the business. Instead he was talked into staying creating new characters to compete against fierce rival, DC comics home to such larger than life icons as Batman and superman. Leap had a different idea. What a superheroes. Were you know, a little less hero? And a lot more human working with his co creator and illustrator Jack Kirby Lee developed characters who were super but conflicted to readers could see more of themselves, and in return, those characters made readers feel perhaps a bit more heroic to marvel was a hit and by the seventies top DC sales for the first time. And so it's been ever since though Li became something of a hero himself his legends a bit complicated as well. In nineteen seventy Jack Kirby left marvel for DC comics upset that lead in give collaborators more credit yet with persistent cameos and Marvel's popular films Lee kept winning over fans until the very end. In fact, the ninety five year old Lee said those fans were what made life worth living presumably in this earthly universe. Nerd Death Match

"We're going to do what we call a nerd debt. So here you could find him on Facebook. So the way that formats you we each picked three characters and we're going to pick hit our character against the other person's character talk about their history. Their power says and buildings and then decide who would win the nerd death match. So we'll get started with the first nerd death match, which we've kinda subtitled whips to wonders. So I think this'll be fine. I really appreciate Lee coming on and doing this. We talked about it not this would be a fun format to do. So wins to wonders my first pick is the hulk for marvel. Of course, the whip side of it is Bruce banner he was introduced in may nineteen sixty two by Stanley. And Jack Kirby, which I didn't know that the Jack Kirby was involved with that as well. And as many of you know, in the early sixties, everybody got their power sets from an accident seems like and Bruce banner is no different. He was hit by a gamma bomb. Which caused him to transform into the hulk when he gets angry or stressed out. He was introduced in nineteen sixty two he started to appear green like we know him now in incredible hulk number two because the print printer that Stanley had lined up couldn't do the gray color that originally started out as you couldn't get a matched. I guess. And so they switched to green which they said would be more consistently green in the hat. I guess more of it. I don't know kind of a weird thing. That's how he got started in. He hasn't really he's been on and off. He only went eight issues that I run and it was in the vendors. And then they try to bring him back. And then win sells you well. So they get cancelled again and say a lot of back and forth. He's been real inconsistent. Even the movies, you see now real inconsistent with that for some reason. They just can't write it. I guess, but they did a TV show in the seventies. With bill. Bixby and Lou frig no lasted for two years. So I don't know why it's been so little more than two years at the warriors. But anyway, it went quite a while. I don't know. Did you ever watch the whole TV show? I did I remember watching the Lou for full episodes. Yep. Yep. Natta cartoon back in the early eighties, which I watched I think it was only again one season there too. I don't know that they went one one season with that as well. So he's been kind of on and off as far as popularity I think in the new avengers movies fairly popular. But right. For whatever reason they can't get a good movie. So that's kind of the hoax story where he started from. Of course hawks mash they catch raised. Right. You buy the whole cans. Yeah. Keep reintroducing. Comes out and see what's the other. I'll hog is the strongest one there is another one. So the kind of common catchphrase, so the hulk. All right. Well, anyway, thanks again for having me on that show. It's always a good time to to get the leeann Lee matchup going on. So we used to wonder to match matchup against the whole this was a tough one. So I've chosen he-man from the masters the universe. Obviously his Wimpy alter ego is a prince atoms are prince Adam sorry team in being his his wonder ego. And then so anyway, nineteen Eighty-one he-man was a product of Mattel toy company, and he came along with an accompanying cartoon series and mini comic collection that came with him. Ran for about six years until nineteen eighty-seven when the toy line kind of imploded upon itself with a terrible live action movie, my personal opinion. Sorry, if you like that show has been relaunched several times and early nineties. There was a new adventure as a human where. He went into space in the early two thousands. There was a reboot cartoon that kind of went a lot more depth and kind of matured the storyline a lot, and it also came along with an accompanying comic book align with that as well. And then in two thousand twelve until present a DC comics apparently owns the rights to match the universe in relaunch to Hebron several times in in short series is in crossovers twenty twelve till present. Yeah, I read that the injustice versus he man. Right. And they had thunder cats versus man rate. Both pretty good. I thought the art was good at DC's done a pretty good job with the the he man comics in their last six seven years, whatever depend the right? So I just watched the two thousand two series a couple of episodes or really. Yeah. This is good. I mean, it's very animated. Ray right scenes. I do a lot of jumping and spinning. Whatnot. But you're right. They the storylines much deeper, right? Yeah. Yeah. I watched the whole reboot cartoon fact, I think that's the only the original vintage cartoon. I doubt I've seen every episode. Even though I loved it as a kid. I'm sure miss them. I've never gone

This Week in Nerd

"Halloween. Just happened this past week. So of course, everything's going Christmas. There were skipping right past thanksgiving. Netflix has a show coming up called the Christmas chronicles going to be starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus this premise, it's not a new idea Santa's so used to stay up to try to catch Santa. They actually do catch him the kind of hideaway in his sleigh. And they cause an activist. So the sleigh is wrecked. And they are in jeopardy of not having Christmas presents for everybody by Christmas morning. So of course, Santa uses his Christmas. Magic calls on his elves and his reindeer, and they are able to. I'm sure deliver everything by Christmas morning because it looks like it's going to be a kid show and got to end on a happy note. I looked at the trailer. Trae looks cute. It's something I'll probably watch it. It'll probably be a yearly thing around Christmas. Now. Kurt. Russell is great actor love everything. He's in just about so Christmas carnivals on. Netflix comes out November twenty second day after thanksgiving market on Gallinger, the aero versus having their fall crossover. They're going to bring in a ton. They're announcing a ton of characters are going to be introduced I've already told you guys about ruby rose being bad woman. They're bringing in psycho, pirate a. He used to be a third tier type character. He's god. He he has Medusa mask where he's able to affect your motions. And he's almost like a motion vampire, he can suck your emotions away from you the bringing him in the one I'm really really excited about though is monitor they're going to be bringing in monitor. He was born on one of the moons of owa, you know, from green lantern says the their base of operation, but there's also an anti monitor who deals with anti energy. And he goes around, basically suck and all the energy out of planets in in places and destroying them. Monitor is the opposite. He's he tries to save all these places. I there's no word on whether they're going to have Lila the orphaned, girl, he rescued in. She became a blue harbor jer on of his sidekicks, but they have shown monitor and Marv Wolfman has said that it's a very close adaption to what he wanted in the comics. He's really excited about it. So if the creators excited about it, I'm excited about it. So not only are we going to be introduced to bat woman and monitor psycho pirate. Ross it'll have lowest lane will be introduced Stephen Mellon green guessing are going to be kind of switching roles trigger twins loan. You know, one's green arrow once flashed or kind of going to swap as part of this else. World's crossover is they're doing a lot for this spoils crossover. It's probably going to gather a lot. Attention on a lot of people going to watch. It is going to start on flash December night at eight PM eastern time and continued through on arrow to December tenth APM an end with supergirl December eleventh at eight PM also in the vein of DC comics bat, girl, bird, Berta, pray. We've been telling you about that movie. Lots of great casting for that. We have another update they're bringing in the big villains. That'd be black mask, and they have cast Ewan McGregor to be black mask. He started out as a Batman villain. He's a nother rich guy from GOP him. But he went the opposite way. His batman. He became one of the crime lords. He's used his money and influence to create the false faces society and kind of rule Gotham 's criminal underground for quite some time. He pops up every now, and then and Batman now they're bringing him in bad, girl and birds of prey you McGregor. Great actor. I think he'll do a great job on black mask all union ten does. Switch owners. I know the biggest gripe than tend to switch guys have is. There's not a lot of apps being developed for it right now. That's changing they are going to put out a YouTube app. Sometime next couple of weeks for ten to switch. So you'll at least be able to pull up YouTube videos and watch on the switch since Google owns YouTube. You can bed this not going to be much longer until they have the Google browser. Ready for Nintendo, switch also. So just be patient guys. They are developing apps from the intendo switch. It's it's a popular gaming network not going anywhere shifts going to get bigger. So you early adopters just gonna have to bide your time. But you are getting a YouTube app in the next couple of weeks. We are used to seeing crossovers in comics and even on TV shows like arrow verse I told you earlier in movies even. I this is a new one to me. It's it may have happened before. I don't remember anything like this board game crossover. They're going to have a board game with two licenses crossing over. Stay with me on this one men in black and Ghostbusters. They're crossing over to make a game called Minna black slash Ghostbusters echo, echo, terrestrial invasion. The artwork on this. Looks kind of cool. It's kind of anime ish. Kitty, looking type of artwork the game is these eco terrestrial are invading earth. And it's taking it's more than either black or Ghostbusters can handle on their own. So they're teaming up to take out these invaders. They also plan on having a couple of standalone expansions coming from this also probably with the Minna black and Ghostbusters by themselves. So on your ghostbuster team. You're gonna have Bank men Spangler stands and said more the Minna black team is going to have agent j agent k agent L and said, those are the ones that we know of right now, they the standalone that are coming following auditees may add other characters, but those are probably there arguably the most popular character from each one of those licenses your men in black slash Ghostbusters echo, terrestrial invasion is slated to come out in late twenty nineteen. So you gotta ways to wait for this. But the follow on standalone expansions should be coming out shortly after those okay my action figure collectors. This is a extra figure. I didn't know if I'd ever see but Hasbro is putting out the six armed Spiderman. This comes from the story where expire man was trying to cure himself from having the spider powers. Did he must calculator wrong? Because it just increased his spider powers it caused him to grow additional arms. This six armed Spiderman is going to be a six inch action figures coming out early in twenty nineteen dark horse comics lately has lost a lot of their licenses. They I mean, they've lost Star Wars. They lost buffet a vampire slayer they lost firefly. They're still they're saying they're still doing well. But they did just make a huge sell of a lot of their stock in holdings. CEO and founder, Mike Richardson has said that he's doing this because they're gonna make a big push into films. They want to have their own funded films. I mean, we've seen how well marvel has done funding their own films having their own film studio darkhorse has a lot of great titles. That would translate great film. Also. It's always the problem of getting these films funded. So now, they have an inhouse film funding part of the business should make it easier. So I'm hoping that microchip knows what he's doing with this. And I hope darkhorse starts putting out some big blockbuster movies. And hopefully, the other comics publishers will start following suit and making their own funded films. K last story I have for you today. I thought this was really really interesting. If you've read heroes in crisis from DC comics, where they it was kind of a sanctuary for all these superheroes. And and villains who were having problems dealing with all the violence and everything else in their life. They were sent there as a for kind of therapy. Somebody found out about this place in came in and basically killed everybody that was at this sanctuary. The main culprits. Were Harley Quinn and booster gold. This sanctuary was run by the DC's. Big trinity of Batman wonder woman in superman, they are coming here to investigate what's going on. And of course, you know, it all the size point toward Harley and booster gold. The trinity tracked down Harley they're going to try to bring her in and question her. This is the part is interesting Harley walked through the trinity like they were nothing. She grabbed wonder woman's LASSO use it all Batman and found out the Batman using the LASSO found out he had a piece of kryptonite on him. She grad that piece of kryptonite and used it to get past superman. And then later on in one of the panels superman even mentions it, you know, Harley Quinn is as good if not better than even new Batman men didn't want admit it. He's got a big ego. But yeah, I mean, she just waltzed through the trio that three arguably strongest characters in the DC universe. Harley Quinn, just cake walked right through them and got away. So everybody who was always wondering why Harley was part of suicide squad. You know, how she could survive a little with joker all this time and all the violence if going on she can hold her own Harley Quinn. She is a top notch gymnast, obviously, she was a psychiatrist so she's not an idiot. She can think her way through a lot of these things and strategically and physically she just bested the three top characters in the DC universe. So if you ever you want to argue about who's the best fighter in DC. You can make a strong case for Harley. Now as always thank you guys for watching the video mash that bell econ- to be notified every time. I upload a new video for my auditory.
