House to vote on $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill this week

"Trillion coronavirus Relief bill will go to a vote this week. Republicans in Congress say it is too much money. Here's Congressman James Comber from Kentucky. Congress already appropriated $150 billion in the cares act for state and local governments. And not all this money's been spent. So the Biden administration is looking outside of Washington, D. C to build their case. Here's NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith. When Mesa Arizona Mayor John Giles looks out his window at City Hall, he can see the convention center. It's become a hub for those seeking help in the pandemic. And on alternating days it is people that are there too. Up there drunk and get £50 of food, putting their trump or its people. They're waiting in line to get the vaccine. So it's a pretty sobering view from the mayor's office. His city got $90 million in relief funds last spring spent it all and Giles says they easily could have filed receipts for double that. Sobering view from his office window explains why this Republican mayor is pushing hard for the $350 billion in funding for state and local governments in the bill. You know this is it's just too important to engage in silly partisan debates. Most cities and towns didn't get direct help, like Mesa did. They had to wait for it to trickle down through their states and counties. The deadline to spend it isn't until the end of this year, so some are trying to make it last as they manage strapped budgets. For months now, a bipartisan group of mayors has been pushing for more. In July. We called ourselves July or bust. That's Dayton, Ohio Mayor Nan Whaley, a Democrat. Her city's budget has been slammed by the pandemic so much so that she isn't sure they'll be able to train a new class of police officers or firefighters. This year. We're not like the federal government, we have to have a balanced budget. So if we don't get a federal money, no fire class Dayton is recruiting new firefighters and police officers but may not be able to bring them on board without more money. When it comes to the schools. It's a similar story. Congress has approved about $68 billion so far for K 12 schools. Well, not all of the funds have been spent. Education officials say the money is spoken for, and they need more. In Pennsylvania Palisades School District Superintendent Bridget O'Connell says they were able to reopen in the fall. And that meant hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes and to teach online So it is a staff intensive endeavor to educate kids during a pandemic Staff aren't paid up front, which is one reason why it may look like funds or unspent. And the bulk of the money Congress approved for schools last year is just now going out. Superintendent Sean Record from Pema, Arizona on Lee found out last week how much his district can expect to get. I have a list of all you know of things that we need in order to be able to You know, provide better social distancing more safety for teachers, more safety for students. They've been open nearly full time since the fall making do with the money. They have his message to critics who point to unspent funds and say schools don't need more. It isn't a light switch. The money doesn't get approved one day and spent the next And that's why President Biden and Democrats are pushing ahead with new funding and say they can't wait for Republicans in Congress to come around tomorrow. US coronavirus death toll reaches milestone of 500,000

"Ryan Douglas. The United States has just reached a grim marker. 500,000 coronavirus deaths. It is yet another tragic milestone. Covert 19 deaths in the U. S are more than double the country with the second highest death toll. Brazil's is a horrible And Mark, Dr Anthony Fauci says a year ago it was hoped the number of deaths would be much lower back in the late winter and early spring of 2020. When we gave the modeling number of 240,000 people thought that we were being hyperbolic. Clearly, that was not the case. And even though U. S death rates are now falling, thousands of additional Americans will fall victim

Amid calls from some state lawmakers for centralized vaccine registration system, the state Department of Health's Lindsay Maldon says it's not going to solve the main issue. We're dealing with a limited supply of vaccine coming into Pennsylvania. This is a problem that's happening all over the country, and so a centralized registration wouldn't help with that issue, And so we're working on again. Chicago mayor provides update on city’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts

"Their Lightfoot. Um, from Chicago. I see her. She's needs a new and show her video. And I think she can do that. I'm sharing. My video of my staff is saying Don't do it. Your office looks messy. Just well, here I am Sorry, and all my glory. Anyway. Thanks. Uh, first and foremost we're in is his call. I want to make three points, two of which I think man and and Jeff have covered. But I want to just underscored from the perspective of a city like Chicago. Um, way you have to think I think really. Long and hard about how the money's will flow to cities and states and I will just say asses one of the cities that got direct funding. We were grateful for that. Obviously want that to happen again. But I also lied. And I said this another context. A conversation with regional mirrors around Chicago, 300 plus Who didn't get a nickel at all. Or if they got something. They got it in September and October from the states who got their money at the same time that we did last April. That just can't be a thing going forward. So one of the things I I will add that hasn't already been said if you're going tol Send monies through states, which I do not recommend. And clearly not for a city the size of Chicago, You got to put some specific controls around dispersing that in a timely fashion to other minister Palate ease. I would put a specific time limits on it because a lot of these municipalities that are smaller in size are smaller than Dayton. Smaller than other places on bit may not be practical for you to be able to distribute money to them directly, but then makes a state. Give him the money and give it to me in a timely fashion, where we can actually help when people everybody's on a different budgeting cycle, But when they don't get money allocated from the federal government till six months or longer afterwards, that's a crisis. That's absolutely Entirely avoidable so that that's issue one on vaccines, I would say again. We welcome the partnership, which would be a huge change from what we've experienced over the course of this last year, but But you've got to talk to us because it's not one size fits all and Julie, As you just said, We're all the different stages in Cycle where all the different stages in which we built infrastructure ready to go, and I will tell you, you know, we've had this challenge with our state. We have actually good relationships with the same party. But when we hear, not directly, but Oh, there's this resource coming. It is coming into the city of Chicago, and it's going to be this is the nest. It just adds confusion. If there's not a conversation and collaboration on the front end. We don't wanna be in that situation with the new administration and the last thing I'll say, and I'm a broken record on this really seriously. You've got to stand up a bipartisan, geographically dispersed size. Just first Group of mayors. You cannot do really much of anything that you want to accomplish without us at the table, But bring us up to the table on the front end at the back end here what our experiences are get a diversity of opinions. You know you're doing that to some extent with the governor's. You got to do that with the mayor's. I just can't tell you enough. Your success depends on us. And our success depends on you. So let's link arms and do this together. Set up Mayor's Council of some sort. These calls are great, but I'm going dialogue from different parts of the country. Different demographics, different sizes, Republican Democrat independent You'll figure out how to put it together, but we've got to be at the table. So that's the last thing I'll say they're like. Could I

"Fortunately, the story takes sad turn when the the guy that the general the guy of the group that owned The am Wednesday night also owned the lug nuts and after one season of soccer, he the soccer team. So think of it from a point who they had a team that was I was Kinda won't support in Atlanta saying. They of their club, which kind of made the mad one way to form another pro. That pro club fuller just one year. So in two years, they went from one club to approach to nothing. That's the way to PIVO. Your fans twice that's double dipping if if you're if you're the owner. Yup but here's what the here's the fans dead about it. I believe it was about maybe a dozen or so of the former lansing supports got together. They had some meetings and such for about I think a year a year and a half with the idea of forming their own fan owned supporter owned club. and. I think it was not too long ago maybe about a month or so. Where they finally announced their Club name which was called Lansing Common F C I believe. and they're going to be playing in a newly in Lee called the Midwest Premier. League. Why do I? Why do I know that, League Maybe, is it the Midwest Premier League I WANNA say it is but my point is they saw that nothing was going on but then decided just to talk about it roll over sleeves and do something about it. I'm on the website. Now it is lancing common football club. It's a pretty Nice Shield that's a little bird on the in the shield. So that's pretty cool. Let's see how to why Internet page. I guess is the perfect time to say, Hey. I got to new websites, go visit them. They are Syndey pod dot com the new home of this podcast and the League WWL DOT com with a face lift in that looks like a new site everything some I always wanted to do by the way. Brian thank you for letting me know the name of that plug in that does how M- how? They'll. Problem. Right I probably should look at the club and it is Midwest Premier League. Is that the same league that Toledo villa, FC's part of or my dream That I couldn't tell you at the top of my head but I'm sure the couple of clicks away I. think that might be on ups or maybe it was at one point. That's right. Yeah. I'm looking at their website now in the West Division you have union do do bic. Thing that's how you say that I actually I've always seen that word. In Iowa. Our WB Adrian Chicago Call County also, in Illinois, Cedar Rapids Inferno. FC Diablo in Bloomington Normal Illinois and Rockford FC. East has a Livonia Michigan Out Clemens L. K.. Sinclair I H. Grand Rapids, and Lansing Common. FC. So now this is not the one I was thinking of with Fleet Avila FC. But I think they're either in ups or the NPS self I'm not mistaken. Mother website. It's got the NPS logo on it. So okay. I. I knew they made a jump some time but Yeah I mean at least that hasn't happened and we mentioned how to improve Dayton sports but remember we got the dragons and hopefully they'll start on time and twenty, twenty one the got the Dayton. "Blitz why released eight different episodes and eight days that was a lot of fun. He disagrees with Jonathan a little bit and like imagine date jt Szabo has experienced broadcasting Dayton bombers, Dayton gems, and also troy bruins when they had the junior hockey team and he kind of helped run. INS for the Troy bruins second year in the. Ahl. So definitely a guy he mentions. Like I mentioned both they leave very long comments on that hill. Respectfully disagree with a few points affiliation of the Minor League level and hockey is different than baseball affiliation actually ends up costing the Meyer Club, a lot of cash with limited upside unless you're in the Ahl just because you had some of the bigger names in the AHL h. l.. Not always the case and it's not always. Not always direct step into the NHL I mean you can be great player, but you still never see the light of day in the NHL maybe even the Ahl as well. Let's see an instrument of since hockey boom of the nineteen nineties. It's out you've been shown. The opposite is more effective building a fan base meaning. You don't need the connection you just need the community aspect type of thing. And like the community, the team that's I completely agree with that just. Like I said before with them with high schools and colleges that you've got sort of built in community there. But when you get people invested into your club, that's when you know you've got him and that's when you know you, gotTa. Enough, you've got him. He also pushes back on Jonathan's mentioned that Dayton's always been good in drawing butts in seats for hockey. Lost my place hang on. Aside. From the gems domination in the sixties, Dayton has not had team that could come close to build capacity any regularity although I thought the bombers when they're at hair they all they often get close to sell out ranks and I know another Senate, the only time they did was Dale Earnhardt Jr. was in the building, and once he left the mouse, the fans left but..

"If you're a high enough recruit, you probably not going to be in the. the AHL even depends on how good you are like a connor mcdavid type thing. Well. The other thing is I off. The gentleman that was injured with crew was name was Eddie Gaven. In turn. What year? That was that? Was I? Think it was twenty thirteen. But absolutely that was not but that was the year before the Affiliation. And I remember crew fans were not happy about the relation the next year. But anyway, they're still not happy that the Dutch lines exists but Yeah that that's if you search twitter. But that was my that was my point was that the affiliation by itself will not guarantee. And kind of and attendance or any kind of bump and overall. Just dumb appearance. It's got to be with promotions with marketing. It's got to be with another thing that link mention that is a strong game day experience in. Going off on another quick tension. I don't believe. In sort of in hindsight I don't think you really need a super fancy stadium to get a great atmosphere granted. It's GonNa be a lot harder but You can still get something big and dynamic. It's Sorta can't miss if you will. If you put enough working to it. I, agree and that's that's a nice argument I can see both sides of the coin on that. As I go back into Jonathan's thoughts. Dayton was always good at putting butts and seats for hockey games that being said, ice hockey is an expensive sport you I mean. You know. Can I mentioned some real quick for high school hockey I thought that was the sport that's Lee schools had I mean in Cincinnati, Dayton. There's only twelve schools that have it I believe. Whereas water polo seventeen in Ohio. So you know, I'm wrong. That sport I'd like team water polo. and One of the Cincinnati schools. Is really successful in it. It's either same exer-. Molar CENEX is really good at swimming. They've won like that does not surprise me. Almost. That's the name that's even during my swimming crab heard Saint plenty of times. I think they won what? Seventeen eighteen straight state titles. It's just it's. I mean, it's it's crazy but anyway both John Galleon. JT's Abbas thoughts. Are you know they've really tightened up a lot and I think both gentlemen? Ford. So I want scroll down a little bit I. Think in order to do that, you would have to put a team out there. That's competitive more often than not. So pretty much you have to come in with a thought that, hey, we're going to be like, no one thirty team just because for new and we're not gonNA use the where new experience you've gotTa. You gotTa have at least some fight to it. So that makes sense. Well. Going back to my thing again, about promotion marketing, the phrase I like to say is winning isn't everything but it helps and going back and I got another sort of analogy to. Go back to that dumb, the Dayton dragons obviously, I mean, they've sold out every game in their history for century or whatever. and. This how many years have they had a winning season Seven. Yeah And on top of that, how many times into the playoffs just seven times? Yeah, I. It's something that I. It's something that we talk about in the official scores room. It's just 'cause we we like talking about the dragons team. You know let's that's funny. A guy that has a sports podcast likes talking about the team me that. We talk about that occasion..

"You got that a lot in hockey where you had players that were just starting out a you knew going somewhere and then you had some of those were in the twilight of their career that had been sent down but still had some great games left in them a always enjoy always you know. Always enjoyed seeing that. But where would you even like for example? Let's say. Suddenly there became, you had some type of Minor League football. Let's go football. 'cause you know. where I don't even know where you would play where would you put that? You know there's place downtown anymore to really place a stadium like that. You could place a little bit north hairiness old area a little too far either way. Let's let's just call likeness. People aren't GonNa Trot would because it's too far out of the way. It needs to be not far off of the highway much like another center. And I think another center could have been something huge had. The nutters not hindered. Buddy so much you know in their demands. So. Where would you even plunk I? Love using that word diabetes at like five times already. But where would you put it? Yeah. I can't think of a place that's very far off of the highway. That, you could devote the land. Maybe Marine. Just outside marine. Somewhere in that general vicinity. South of Dayton Austin landing that area. May. I just realized there's one spot that I didn't mention the stream the old Roberts West Carrollton I mean nowadays that's got the. Nice and easy on ramp off ramp from I seventy five and. The only question is, is it big enough to have the amount of parking that you need I don't know but the same time it's something that I didn't really. Bring up yet. So Roberts area wouldn't be bad but yeah I don't know the logistics of. Having a stadium there or not..

"But it was all the other stuff that really kept her wanting to come back and kept her wanting to experience that and I think that's why the other leagues again having caught on is that there's not. An experience you know you're just going to watch those athletes play. There's not the extra stuff around it and I, think that's what needs to be improved upon I mean. Yeah. You can spend all the money and build new venues you can. You can do that. But I don't think you're going to get the amount of success you need. Unless you have that experience factor. Like him brings up a lot of good points and he's at the end he's talking about we still have about ten minutes the clip there's A. Few questions but he brings up the experience and that's some of the Dayton dragons have done. You know right without question I mean. They're so focused on customer service and making you know family night type deal. It's. You know it's something that I don't know if I thought about the four but you gotTa have the experience of it. Not just you know you go to game there's the game you forget about it. You need something that you'll keep coming back to. Absolutely but before we forget. I'm so happy that he mentioned the date diamonds Quick Charlotta Tj she's listening. But anyway. Excuse me. Second. Sorts of the by through but anyway. I think he's spot on with the experienced bits and. Again, the Dayton dragons kind of the gold standard locally when it comes to billion experience and. You and I've seen plenty of times where. The experience for just the stuff beyond just the sport is just not there just. I mean I mean there's nothing really else to enjoy other than the sports I wanNA say the sport should be secondary I mean it's I wanna I wanna say it's of the. Meat and potatoes kind of thing we're one's kind of the main course. That's kind of a salad or the desert or whatever. But. Having a good experience having a good game day experiences very important. Thing too I mean. I'm sorry that's all right. Yeah I agree I mean. You know you're going to get sports when you go to a sporting event but now it's about what else can you provide outside? The sports I think you know there was a couple of nights where the demons and demolition did great things. I always liked it when the cop cars of would come out on the ice and do a lap that I think that was really cool I mean I i. liked it. I believe it was demolition where we had the troubled mass and banned in one of the corner of hair arena and they would play. All it was great and it you never would've thought that a high school band and hockey would mix. But let me tell you high school hockey and excuse me high school band and hockey mix although high school hockey in high school bands mix as well. I mean senator had that last year and I was really cool. So and there was one year I. "Think it depends on which it senior looking at. For example the fanaticism that surrounds high school. Football. Here in Dayton you have people who? Don't have children at all that have season tickets to their local high school team. You know or they get so upset you know with what happened in Wayne with coach Mittens replacement. People just. I really thought some of them may have just got up and moved out a few nights. You know it's quite amazing the dedication and they haven't had children in Wayne or they don't have children in Huber Heights or never have or they have it in decades and they have that utter undying loyalty you get that with you E to. Ud Basketball especially. I. Mean Try to get you the ticket sometime. You know. It's it's I tried to go to a few games who that's a noise level that rivals any NFL stadium in. You Ud arena and I think that sort of thing is really what makes the Dayton sports scene awesome the the huge amount that goes still to the Dayton dragons you know, and that is probably one of the some of the best days in summer and let me tell you a quick story of a friend of mine named Doug. Who's WHO's no longer with us Doug had had some problems in life had been working on getting his life better but he works a couple of part time jobs and you know he still had some substance abuse problems. "Oh, up there and it hasn't happened yet. So it's become like a giant home for their junior hockey Team. I think that's how you say that in French. It's to say I think the caller say I think so I. got that little accent that the think it's pronounced a or say call us. At probably makes more sense but brand new facility it state of the art and it's ready to host an H. L. team and it's been open for quite some time I don't think quite ten years but it's it's been open for a long time and they still haven't been able to get NHL team into Quebec City I mean that I'm not You know we build arena we're waiting for an NHL team become the Dayton. Ohio. That's not what I'm saying at all. If you build an arena like that the multi multi purpose arena, we're GONNA have your hockey team, a basketball team indoor football team. Purposes the keyword there exactly. I mean you would know more than me but that's helsing. Do they hold them other events like concerts or? And such yeah. I think I think that they do up in the caller it replaced the Pepsi caller say which was the nordiques last home until they moved to Colorado in nineteen, hundred, five but Yeah, I mean multi-purpose. That's how you're GONNA make. That's how you're going to stretch your dollar and that's how you're going to get things in there. Now, the big question is if you build this multi multipurpose van you are you putting it because again? You can try to you know renovate Ding Convention Center I think that'd be pretty nice spot but S- I don't do agree there but. Going back to what else said. Having Room in the place, it's having room in downtown. It's going to be very, very difficult. and. It can be hard to find land. So interesting I thinking renovating something exists if you WanNa, keep it in downtown maybe the best option. The only other thing I can think of just going back to trends and such is that this is just a random thought. The last dome bigger read the first big arena that was built. I mean that wasn't you the Reno was Hera Rena I remember and Nauseam. Part of like a big shopping center area would sail a mall and everything. And when the center was built, that was kind of around the same time when the fearful mall is being built or. Fairly. While you're two before that and that's kind of what ramp that up. Yet. Another center they worked on that in the late eighties and opened it fall nineteen ninety and the Fairfield Commons mall would in nineteen ninety-three. So yeah. With stem stem that. So if it was more of a perfect storm of of people coming down to win shopping there and having an entertainment venue nearby so..

"I mean outside that you have tren arena, but the rest are high school venues. It will to is basically a high school venue. It's again with sues it the Fairmont High School in isn't fantastic facility. I mean. That's the only really. Sort of basketball ish place that you could play in sort of get away with as a any kind of professional level. Indoor venues like you said was pretty much only other high school venues and if you wanted to stretch your imagination the Dayton convention center. I mean that's where the gem city Roller Derby were for couple seasons and that will that wasn't too bad I mean if Actually if I remember I, think the original Dayton determine had their last season in the convention center as well as the last year in Dayton before they moved to. Cincinnati. Stayed there three years and then folded which I always laugh the fact that you know Dayton Dynamo two point. Oh, which will probably talk about during the Stream. Dayton Dynamo two point. Oh, they got their start in Cincinnati as saints came over to Dayton for last two seasons and. That was that it's it's funny how both Dynamo teams either came from or went to. Cincinnati. And in the Latter case I think they were sold to a group that. was either based in Cincinnati or northern Kentucky I WANNA say Cincinnati. But and then that was the end of it. I mean if someone really wanted to set up a very successful minor league team there probably look they probably have to build the venue, and if you think about what's around dating, you're probably going to have to build in the suburbs just because downtown is. It's pretty full and that space that I thought. I think you thought this to you probably thought this and then I was like That's a good idea. the the town that lawn, the corner of Kiwi and webster that might have been nice place for field and. That that's no longer there's a building there. I know a lot of logistics going involving into building on the stadium anywhere. The only other thing that might make sense at from any angle would be. Top to bottom renovation of welcome stadium. But then you get with the Dayton public schools and all that. Yeah I mean I'm pretty sure. They wouldn't object to it if Sony waved enough money and had enough promises and such but. It's hard to see that happening if nothing's coming. I need to see the money and you know some concrete plans and make sure that you're not just going to run off. We say okay. But that's again with them. Talk about indoor venues and outdoor venues. There's. There's really where to play which. Like I mean, there's really not much more to it than that. I mean I think the Dayton Dynamo two point oh were sort of on the right track go playing at was there was a Roger Glass Stadium Social Milan Julianne..

I mean could sort of see the reason behind it just to create less waste. Yeah, I get that but the straws aren't to great but I mean we go back I? mean. There's opportunities here in Dayton, Ohio and Brian you and I agree on this fact that sports can do well here. Absolutely, sports can do well there and they have done well here before like you mentioned the history with the. Dayton gems, and of course, currently with the Dayton dragons but. They, both both of them have their reasons for why they're succeeding in. There's plenty that you and I are both aware of why other teams have not been a successful. Absolutely. So let's begin the discussion Brian if you were in charge of getting a sports team into Dayton and. And just your overall in charge of everything. What's your first step? ooh My goodness. That's a that's really a tough one but dumb going had to go back to what I wrote. My first article a dumb going back to some of the failures what those twenty I think those teams that kind of failed to do is they try to think of it as sports I and business. Second. What you really idea was. So if I was in charge of everything and and roast resources were not that shoe, I get the business end sorted out I get. I mean, obviously get our brand name and get publicity out there. Just let everybody know that we exist. Just have all my ducks in a row. "That's probably a better way to put it I mean the whole deal was you know the gems would fold and then here comes this new hockey organization Doron through downtown Dayton I. mean this was back in the seventies when you know dragons wasn't even a thought in people's minds and no hockey was you know celebrating some good successes with the gems winning back-to-back Turner's. Exactly there but also remembered the same time I mean I. Wasn't around at that time I like to think that trump would at that time was a pretty bustling suburb at the time with the. Salem Mall was there I came up but I don't even know what remember what time period that was I vaguely remember going to have place once or twice during my childhood when my parents had some business up there. For. ME. I can remember the Salem when I was a kid and you know I'd be with my mom and my grandma. You know stroll through Lazarus and you know once the Fairfield Commons was built up on the other side of six, seventy, five, I mean. That's when Salem all started to go downhill and. You know I I've I feel for the city of trouble because it's you know it's hard working folks said, you know they they rally round the rams and It's going to be I think the rams are one of the few teams around few schools excuse me around here. That said no fall sports but after today's news which by the way. Looks like we will have fall high school sports after all and Brian I think you must be excited. I'm pretty excited. We have all sports. It's going to be something. It's going to be nice. It's really interesting but I'm more interested in the execution of dumb. I I saw something what they're not requiring testing at all that's going to be interesting. To. Tell you the truth that's the bit that kind of scares me the most. Yeah I I I don't know how this fall season supposed to turn out but. At. least we have a sports back in the fray so it'll be nice to get back behind the MIC phone and. Call few games here there. But anyway back to Dayton sports history I mean. There's a there's a great history here in Dayton Ohio and I I feel like you know along with the great musical history in Dayton and just what all Dayton Ohio is brought to the states in the world. You know people forget about it and when you say so much you put a team in Dayton Ohio they just laugh at us like Dayton there's nothing to do there. because they said it's under doing they noticed are looking are enough exactly I mean. Granted. I'm glad it's kind of like that. With any smaller a mid sized city I mean no, we're not a New York City or Chicago or Los Angeles Sir. A Dallas or any other major city like that. It's not something where there's stuff everywhere you came looking at Kissy something but dumb, there's some good stuff doing dame. There is an there's you know you gotta make your own opportunities. There was a basketball team that only lasted one season called Dayton jets which played most of their season at. All and their last two games at the. At Colonel White High School which no longer exists. It's crazy to think that colonel white is no longer a thing in terms of high school it's it was replaced with Thurgood Marshall I believe. And actually I remember my senior year maybe the year after that that was the last year of Colonel Wide before they turned over to Thurgood. Marshall Valley view actually played them in football so Yeah. It was It was different. See Karma white fold but yeah. Going back to Dayton sports thing. There is just about anything you could want here in town. exactly on to the next year. That was when in. Oh six. That's the Miami Valley silverbacks. All right. It turned out. Okay. Before the broadcast daisy chaining search with stuff so That's always fun. You know someone makes software. That's just like for one thing and they don't have to worry about anything like that. They make a bundle of money. Well, the software engineering is kind of jealous now I mean, Hey, it's never too late to start something up you know you'd have a customer to me but. Today we are talking about Dayton sport crisis. This is continuing on from my episodes sports this paradise and Brian's articles on Gem city sports dot com about Dayton sports crisis. I like that name better instead of Sports Stirs Paradise Oh. There you go. That's why we're using that but basically. I'm sorry was the problem. There's a solution pretty much. Basically, we're talking about why these sports scene in Dayton Ohio, has dwindled down now of course, the University of Dayton flyers it's as strong as ever for men's basketball. We're not talking about that we're talking overall sports scene. Outside College hoops, we're talking wing Dayton was you know home to pretty much everything minor league. That could exist. I mean, there was hockey here. Great hockey history I mean soccer was here. Professionally, we had basketball team. We had a couple of basketball teams actually and we still do I believe but. With, this corona virus who's say in fact I, think I saw what half the businesses around the Dayton area could stay closed. Thanks to this quarantine. I didn't see an exact number, but that it was a substantial number and that's very, very unfortunate. Yes, it is because. You and I are both Daytona. We Love Our city, and we want to see the best out of it and you know..

"A calendar. And tight individually all seventy games into the calendar, and specifically put a location area Arab bolt part so I can forget so I've been brooding myself to not make the mistake because I'm sure that that would sit out What, it's not anymore, so definitely been. Working on that and I know that we appreciate bird or Commitment to the stadium into the drug, INS, and looking for to finally getting their their stadium next year. I mean it's. It's crazy to think that fifth third is always the sponsor of the stadium since. Opening in two thousand, and now in twenty twenty one, it's going to be a local bank with ties to the air force base in Dayton Ohio itself which that's that's really cool thing about. Got Is. The transition. You know I think they do that. I shop with finding a sponsor that was true to the Dayton roots, and was really excited of being involved of. That they're always doing it. They're our ally. Which is return on investment? Think that there's always proper to have. People in the stadium to. To, be able to see that name and here and being to view in programs and I'm I'm sure it'll be good driver business for day or so. We're extremely excited to be you know seeing partnerships and I'm extremely excited. to be you know of that gets to. Get out there through the spoken word. And you imagine you have a calendar that helps. Keep events on track for you I have one of those. Paper planners and those are lifesavers, aren't they? I put mine all in the computer kind of go from air and kind of do so you know it's? Interesting when I was getting to when I was getting ready to delete games for once where found out that the CD was canceled I walked in at Charter delay and the day the. Apparently. I must have a little bit of soccer 'cause when I signed that put in the Games, I apparently miss. finishing up the season, so what was interesting because the last game that I had in the under was the day they cancelled the season. Those kind of weird that I had gone. Obviously, not knowing that any of this happened. And then kind of. but I use that calendar Italic. Tree. Then, what are some of your favorite things about local sports in Dayton? I think I if you look you, know logo sports and. Some of the. I think it was really cool. Is Some of the people that have from Dayton Ohio interested in sports, but in jail in you looking at? Sports and you look at I. Think of Acting I. Think one of my favorite of all time was West Wing, and in that show you Martin Sheen Dayton, Ohio, Alison Jane. You know you have a lot of people from this area that you know. Go on unbelievable thing. you know when you look at a sporting? Look at some of the high schools we've you got a great great tradition that alter and you've got great tradition vet. The whole you know and people that have come though. those institutions have done out of really good things beyond this this area you know professionally and collegiately, so you know I just think it's a great. It's a great breeding ground for individuals that WANNA. Do a more after high school you know. Be Coaches Um, great innovations. We've got you D- You've got a lot of other organizations that they Kamaluddin from the from the perspective, so I think the back is what impressed me. The most is the ability who have. Warm outside of people that. From Dayton Ohio and I'm happy to say you know. Be just small. Part of you know the sport theme and Market in the Guard the Dragon. Also I. Think Nearby What is that Dr Paterson I. Think it's Patterson is named. Mike Schmidt Named Mike. Yeah, Mike. Mike Schmidt you've got you've got also. You know Roger Clemens was You know from this area. Visit a game. You know several years ago. I mean there was you know out of again? A Lotta great people came from this area. Including Mike Schmidt Yep absolutely. Now. What would you like to see added in the future of sports and Media and Dayton Ohio? To See Hockey. Come back, you know. I'm I'm not used. hock person you know, but I think it'd be cool to have kind of a rounded founded scene of sports hockey with the off the half back in I think that that would be. A welcome addition to this market as the have. Whatever kind of team it might be, but I think that'll be pretty cool. Have Hockey make an? Parents in the market. I always wondered if the downtown hockey arena happened. You know what what type of hockey we would have today in Dayton. Yeah Yeah. I don't know. The answer to that question, but that'd be cool to see what NA- in. This market, but you know we'll see what happens You know I don't I don't know that it ever will new days that's been tried, either and struggled a little bit, and I think. Down from that standpoint, but you never know what happened and who would get. Now for those that want to become an announcer such as yourself. What advice can you share? You know here's what I would say. I would say from that point. Take any, gigs. You know no matter how trivial or how small might seem the only way to get better from an announcing is. Now. It's a matter of somebody I go you league baseball team, but do. They. Ask You a Little League football game. Go, do it. You know I think that's with you kind of habit opportunity Oh, you earn you. "In the twenty eighteen state championship against the Redskins of what Canada is to run, go ahead single on the top of the seventh, broke the tie and carry the eagles to a three one win for their first title. Let Me Tell You, about twenty nineteen Gongora nine wins. No losses er a lower down to one point fifteen. Yeah. That is what we know in the term baseball as great stuff. In The D. Two state championship game that season. I was going to say three. I'm glad I looked that up. Gore allow one run on four hits in seven innings, pitching the eagles to a four two win against Gilmour Academy. Cj became the ninth team and Oh. A history to win back to back. State titles only nineteen. How about that? And of course Gongora couldn't pitch senior because Corona, virus? So definitely a big commitment. For right states. Continuing to build the Monster Great College Baseball. Program I don't think I need to tell you my feelings on. Wright state and Dayton Dayton's growing rice states spin strong for the past few years. And Alex Sogard the head coach w. he's got a good left-hander. And looking forward to seeing Gongora pitch for the raiders, hopefully in two thousand and twenty one. Actually on the interviews I did today I mentioned. That I hope Ohio State does reschedule the game at Wright state because that would be pretty cool to announce buckeyes raiders, and be the first time Ohio states play them right state since nineteen ninety-six when men soccer did that. Back in the day, so yeah. Big Commitment for right states, and they continue to build the monster. So Great News. Now this is the point of interest that I wanted to talk about like a mansion. It's for our friends. At Mount, Saint Joseph University. You have dual sports, Star and Cornell Beecham junior as the heartland male athlete of the year. That's the heartland. That's.

"There are there. Reds fans and Bengals fans in the Dayton area yes And then there are To a large degree large not Lebron's fans into a smaller degree some Indians fans but You know we're not Cincinnati North This is a very Autonomous And in a very parochial area. And I love that about it in that You know Friday nights you know were High School Football Stadium you know. That's that's what we do here and I love that the fact that Local sports have as high a profile As anything that would be happening at the at the collegiate level and at the professional level nationally. I mean you go to some. I remember going to Philadelphia and getting my haircut tournament barber shop and get my haircut. Augusta's where you're from Dayton Ohio will bring you here. We are for the Atlantic ten tournament. It was what's that was that. Well it said it would lead Danes Long with LaSalle Saint Joe's really. Oh I had no idea. Yeah so you know. Most of the metropolitan areas are so consumed with professional sports that You know anything. Taken Place. Collegiately or locally. Just don't didn't resonate. There's a lot of everything around here. I mean like you mentioned high school football. That's Fridays than you. Got College Football Saturdays and pro football the next day. There's a little bit of everything for everyone here in sports game. Well in two thousand and four There was a a game in February Dayton played. Saint Joe's hosted Saint Joe's and had a horrible snowstorm that weekend the Dayton mall was shut down. The mall was closed. flyers had a sellout crowd that Saturday night. Be Saint Joe's you know the next day. Everything is still shut down completely snowbound in K. Churches are closed. The Altar is playing in Saint. Vincent Saint Mary with Lebron James and CJ is going to play a believe Cincinnati Princeton in a doubleheader at the at the arena well Princeton says. They can't make it up. It's too snowy Akron. Same Business. Mary's they make it and so as alter against Lebron his high school team and again a sellout crowd in I just sold out to sold. I mean butts in the seat sold out on back to back nights when the area is supposedly completely shut down by snow. So that told me a lot about Dayton fans right there. I mean that's some not always tip my hat to UD FANS. There are probably the most loyal that you can meet. It's it's fantastic. And when the malls and churches close you think everything's closed but nope it's still basketball time. Get get there yeah. I mean it's GonNa take a lot more than just a on the only thing they can keep. Obviously the only thing that can keep flyer fans away is Kobe nineteen. It's it's it's still such a shame and it's the first tournament since what the thirties or something like that. It hasn't been played I. It's not good match a lot of great things about the Dayton sports scene. But in your eyes what would you like to see? More out of Dayton sports in Dayton sports media or Dayton media in general You know I think I just just keep the focus where needs to be in. That is The focus on what is happening. That is not going to get the attention of. Espn you know that in that is you know what's happening with local athletes. Local teams The you know the local stories about you know the people who are involved. I mean the news organizations are quick to say. Well you know. We don't need to be doing a sports because sports fans can get all of that off of ESPN. Well they can national stuff. But that's not the you know but that should not be the focus you know We don't need to you know if I want to know about the NFL draft. I'm probably not going to watch a local TV station. If I want to know about Adam trautmann status. I will So that you know that's the difference in so Yeah keep the focus. Local for those are interested in joining the field broadcasting. What advice and tips can you give? Well develop a brand Develop brand no one is going to You know no one's going to give you job. Security known is going to give you anything Your your value to an employer or as a self employed freelancer. If you will is is that you've got to have a brand you know. So so focused on. What is it you do? That's unique? What is it you do that makes you Someone that people want to pay attention to to give up something very valuable and that time and focus on that really kind of hold your brand. Okay what is it that I do? It could be that you just do everything. You're a jack of all trades or something to be said for that it could be that you know what I am the best Bmx bicycle broadcaster in the nation. In focus on that. You don't have your niche but you gotTa have a brand you have to have a brand So that both employer knows who you are and a listener viewer reader is going to know who you are like that advice about building the brand being professional with it too.
