T. and that he is someone I know really really well because I was here when he started and I came back here when he finished and he and I inter twined in our WBT careers but I'm gonna say even though I don't know what time somebody might be listening to this podcast I'm going to say good morning because I want to hear the guy on the other end say that phrase to botox good morning cal Gardner it is awesome to hear your voice and Grady Cole of course it was a three decade morning man for WBTV when Grady Cole started way back in grade Grady was essentially the only game in town he is and you learned a lot about him when you were here bigger than life personified not only W. B. T. but also Charlotte broadcasting in Carolina broadcasting all together so outside of Grady Cole the longest running morning show man in Charlotte in modern times is al Gardner you were there for almost fifteen years nineteen ninety seven to two thousand eleven and I remember nineteen ninety seven because the first full time job I had out of out of college at Davidson college was working on your morning show but before we get into those fifteen years because you saw and you heard a lot and you have a perspective doing mornings here that the longevity that no one else has I hope maybe someday I will but I'm I'm I'm I'm just great and half of that right now so no question but no for we get to your time here I don't think a lot of people know what al Gardner did before he got here yeah yeah let me kind of kid that's it down a little bit when we were kids we're like ten eleven years old disc jockeys on radio in Philadelphia where I'm from we're like stars you know names like high living Joan I agree and people like that if anybody if as you listen if you've been listening in you know anything about sold off you might know the name hi let legend he was Philadelphia's Grady Cole if you well except he was a rock and roll disc jockey well these ten or eleven year old kids we used to you know talk up records and try to hit the post you know what that means is the instrumental part of the song starts and then when the vocal starch you stop with the split second to allow the vocal.

B. is a different thing I mean I watch this guy Steve Kerr and he was like a little boy who was so he's going to be even answering the question you can answer the question you we shaking all all I don't know I don't know he did not answer the question and yet he will talk about the United States very badly I watch Popovich sort of the same thing but he did look quite as scared actually but they talk badly about the United States but when it talks about China then I want to say anything bad I thought it was pretty sad actually.

The air gets turned off in October. Like that. But whatever. Yeah. I know to quote Woody Allen, I'm to witness. -ture. Watch the fine hoops game. It was at team. Good game the white team one because. Seven I don't understand. Well mainly go five but I don't understand at the end of the game, not being the basketball wizard that you are. How does it? How do they not get fouled before that three point shot a day were trying to just do it? They, they did a bad job. That's acts that city. Never ending question. It says just tackle some day should have almost through the way that curry guy threw it away. Back that carry guys from Toronto rate is not. No. I thought he was so man played all. I remember going to games and he was a big. He's in high school or something. He was a big star Toronto. Steph curry. I think I remember covering games. I read everything I thought he was a high school player there or or youth but he was a hold on. Hold on born in Aquitaine when his dad was with the Cavs, and he's bad goes to Charlotte. So I soon they didn't just leave them behind on. He was also a member tomato. So. School. Maybe like the when he was like sixty Davidson college. I know that I'm trying to know he played high-school bowl in Charlotte. Yeah. Tired, Canadian they moved back. Play for Queensway wings way. That's the place Queensway. That's a big place. He was a big star Corinne, will, this Charlotte, Christian school. We was this is after and he led the team to three conference titles, but that's not college. That's yeah. Yeah. School star there, but at Charlotte. Maybe he only spent one year which Queensway but that one you were they was defeated. They wanna championship. There's well, so looks like Steph coz, also one of the great high school players in history. Yeah. Well, there's a lot of them. It to the NBA pretty good chance you were pretty damn good at JV hall of fame Osgood. JV player. I was always good JV played. Oh, yeah. I could play JV and then they bring me up. And then I couldn't do nothing. Then went back to the Jake I started for the JV team. And then got to sit on the bench with divorce city basketball until you and that finding night. Their game was always I played in, and then maybe some people that would come in early varsity game, which see, like the second half of the fourth quarter they sent us with the diversity was home. We were we're playing that team on the other place. So if BC high was at sea memorial, memorial JV was at. No. It was the field. At least my year was Catholic. That's what it was played right before joy. JV freshman. JV. It was fun. You didn't play freshman team. You went to JV right to the JV, and then never never, never fulfilled. My promise is hockey. Right. This is baseball baseball. I went to Catholic schools. You. Able to skip the team. Galeta JV. Got into the school to play baseball and then was a huge disappointment because I'm wanted to play lacrosse. Did you play quad no ended up playing hockey for a I feel be a travel? They want you to play bass. Play baseball when wanted to play. Across baseball for two years. Freshman and sophomore, and then didn't play well and was boring and but I still love the game but I just didn't like practice back when we play WIP so games. You were pretty damn good shortstop struck out in softball at the plate you pathetic at the plate. Pretty good shortstop play a little bit. You look like you knew what you were doing. At the battle with this team. If you wanna make up chicks. How good how're to look like you know what you do when when eskimos on the team. And you heard on the team. If you could if you could. Never mind. I might have been you. It sounds like a chick, you would have done good. But I just started here piece I didn't really know anybody all that, well, but edge came up to the plate. And I think you might have been you. Told everybody to sink. Cow. So. Dribbler about two feet. Move back. Back. More. And the bowl two feet. Much fun. Yeah. It was. I think that that game that series to me now the warriors. I mean I thought the raptors had to win that game. Just had to win it. I just know how to win so much nothing. Rattles it all depends on whether or not. Golden State looks at the first laws as you to wake up because I'm telling you eight played a lot Golden State did they won the game. But they played a lot of sloppy uninspired ball last nineteen. Really did? They won. Did they didn't win? I still think they're going to win the series. I don't know. You just said that you might only go five ready to go there yet. I don't know that Tron knocked off on at home that bet crowd if it's a. May come out of the game, there would help the second half. Yeah. They. Men that was an opening. Everything good. Roll or something? And that was it. That was the end of the game to crowd was completely insane prior to that. And then. I always remember Jim Valvano delayed Tim Valvano said the most important four minutes of any basketball game or the last two minutes, I have, and I two minutes of the second hand because often teams come in a lot of and they're not quite in any kind of groove yet. Yeah. And if you behind you can really make a little damage in those opening minutes of the second hand fans on their seats yet. Yeah. I know. That's a good thing. There's a different kind of tent city with. There's first couple of minutes and Golden State took it and ran with it. If I can quit Golden State. Somebody's looks from Toronto were great. Look even the beginning of the game trying to have good looks and didn't hit. Yeah. Just noun down. I still think Golden State Wednesday. We'll see what goes down, you have a great day today. Megantic. Let me talk to you about my dentist. Dr Craig, Don of cherry hill. He's too on route seventy if you're coming from Philly, you go a little bit pass Springdale. And Dr Don is right there on the right hand side. I'm thrilled. He's one of my sponsors because I was going to Dr Don for more than ten years for decided to sponsor on my program, which means what I've already in love with his work, and he does great work. In fact, he's a miracle worker swear to got when I had all that radiation done in my throat when I got sick, I was told them Jefferson docks that about a year year and a half my teeth, we're going to start falling out and they did. They didn't somehow back the Craig Don got the mall back in the way spot. Today, my smile looks great. There's nothing I can eat imagine what he might be able to do for you for more routine work, and let's talk. About that teen work because, to most people, there's no set state as routine work when it comes to a dentist because most of us have frightening in that year I used to be, but I know long rant. Dr Don does. No work on you at all to you are completely numb and comfortable in that chair. And I don't know how important that is to you when you're choosing it Dan is, but it's everything to me. Look, if you don't have a dentist the moment, or maybe on happy with the one, you do have to give them a call and give them a try. I know you'll love his work eight five six four two four, seventy four seventy seven. And if you can't remember that number, just go to big nanogram dot com and right at the top of the page on the left hand side is all his information. That's my Dennis Quaid. Now it's the. Over shell. "The stuff that's a class act says the me Davidson's tone-deaf I disagree. I think they are standing by their principles Jordan, then it's about academics. First. Really? So the university has a rule. We retired jerseys. If you don't have to worry about retired any stinking jerseys. What other jerseys are up for being retired at Davidson? Get out you tell me they don't have any other name one other guy for Davidson exactly you're Google won't even be able to find it. Get outta here. That's the that's the stupidest rule I've ever heard. Yeah. I disagree. Steph curry put his name in rafters put his name in the walkway put his name on a cafeteria trays if you want to here's another Steph curry fine with Davidson not retirees number after he graduated. Great response staff. Kudos stuff Davidson radiates. Yeah. I completely disagree with you. It's fine completely all I know is what I did one of their games. I saw the the SE thirty the under armor, shoes and all that stuff. So here's steps quotes Davidson will not change their rules for anybody. Not even Steph curry I knew what I signed up for. When I went to Davidson, I made a promise to coach MacKillop, and to my family that when I left school in Oneida that I would accomplish a graduate degree, and it will be soon, hopefully, sooner than later MacKillop called curry, the biggest catalyst for Davidson basketball that Davidson college has ever had, but Davidson athletic director, Jim Murphy said there's been no movement to make an exception and allow them the recognition it's one of those things where I'm not even sure who would make that decision. It's never come up. I guess it would have to be at the board of trustees. However, a similar debate happened in the past Davidson surrounding a hall of fame candidacy, Mike Malloy another. A former basketball standout left school a year early in one thousand nine hundred seventy playing the ABA entrance into the school's hall of fame. Also requires the inductee have graduated. He still holds the school record for rebounding and is still not in their hall of fame despite playing successfully professionally I give them credit, man..

"This idea of contract grading and. I'll tell you straight, up I rather like it it's, being billed as revolutionary education it's a practice. At Davidson college. When you pay, to go to school you sign up for, a, certain grade and then the professor says, okay you want to pick your. Own grade you want an a. or a b. or c. this is what you have to do to get that a, in other. Words, before you think that picking your own great happens after the final exam. Is finished that's not what this is. It is, done ahead of time so the, student designs the workload necessary with the professor of course to complete an earn the grade I like this in, other words you can go to the professor, and say hey I want an a. in your class. I think I'm an ace th Student I want to try for that. Tell me what. I need to, do then you go home you'll get your, pencils, you get your eraser you get your, computer you get all your needs There your school supplies and everything and. You start to try, to achieve that Chuck, do you like this, you know at first, I didn't but you know At the end of the day the way that you. Explained it a little? Bit of the research that I've, done on it I think it's okay Also at the, end of, the day you know if an a. student medical doctor a c., student medical, doctor graduate you know, who's. The better doctor right I don't know that the great necessarily matters now what it is that they are able to a what is required to do in order to get that grade should have some merit in the grade that they received that they could take and actually. Utilizing whatever career path They're going down so you know it's interesting I, don't know that I. Like, it or dislike but it's very interesting well I like it Shannon because the ambitious ones will grab this. And they'll go home and they'll start in I remember when I was an undergraduate, and there was a certain basic psychology, class, and I went to the first lecture Shannon there was. Maybe six hundred students in that, lecture hall it was, a humongous lecture hall but the professor said every single person is capable of an a in this basic, course now we cover a lot of ground. So this is what you need to do I don't rate, on a curve I, grade ABC or fail or no pass, is is the structure was in other words you want. A great in this and, you don't pass you get a no credit then you're going to. Have to pay, tuition again for this course in other words they didn't give. Jesus or absence just a b or c now if you want an, a. this is what you need to do. There are fifteen as, get with office hours start figuring it out. Come in and, take all Of? Your chapter, exams you're on your own ready, go I liked that I got an a. I was, ambitious cannon well I. Think that's a good idea the I think it, issue or the c. And, d students who really could care less but you know what they're gonna do that whether or not they. Pick the greater not so I agree with you I think it's a great idea, I like the idea of someone coming, in, and saying hey I can get as and I can. Make it happen and and it's, an agreed upon contract, I think it's a good idea I like it it's agreed upon contract also because let's say you're on, the football team and you let's say you're. Premed and you could give a damn about English let's say, it's an English class, and you say listen there's no way, I can be med and football team and no all. All this reading done so, he goes to the prophet and he says I wanna be a. C. student in, your I aim to be a c. student in your class. What, do I need to do to get because overall at the end. Of the day meaning the end of the. Four years that I'm, here I got a pass And I gotta also keep my scholarship on the football team or the swim. Team or whatever they're on. Or and I also have a. Girlfriend in my life or whatever whatever else is going, on, it strikes me that this is really smart for time management for the art of being a. Student really being a student with. Schedules and making. A deadlines and carving out time Chuck I I wish and this is life I. Wish more students and, professors had this kind of thing so if. You're premed and you go I need to get, a, b. in biochemistry but I can coast in English a little bit then okay aim for that. And then see where you fall Terry this is, why I love your show so much after, listening to your intelligent and Shannon quite frankly her intelligent. Review ideas of how this would work and? How it, is a positive thing I'm now, a believer I agree with you that is a great, idea and if it's Done the way that you're talking about with the students that have all those different things. To do haven't been. Football player during school. Myself I like it I'm. All for it So if you had to think if, you can, think back now and say to yourself well maybe I should have organized my undergraduate. Years as such do? You think you would. Have gone, to every prophet and, say all right this is my schedule or, every day, that kind of helps and coaches you through what do you think I absolutely would have I mean thinking back. On? It it's brilliant and because I can remember thinking you. Know I gotta do, x. y. z. just to get a d. in a particular class stay on the, football, team, right and I had to figure, that out on my own but if I could if, I could have gone up to my. Co teacher to begin with and. Say, hey listen I need at least a CD whatever it may be because I'm more interested in football. But I want, to pass your class I. Quite frankly. Really liked it well check on. Glad you're learning this elbow elbow little. Late in life because you know what it is it is life so let's leave it there good discussion I hope I've convinced some people I. Wish it was more my case I. Only had a. Few classes like that But I, think it's effective you're gonna Aim High.

Know what I, I didn't but At the end of the day the way that you explained it and a little bit of the research that I've done on it I think it's okay you know at the end. Of also at, the end of the day you know if, a, student medical doctor in a c. student, medical doctor graduate who's the better. Doctor right I don't know. That the great necessarily matters now what, it is that they, are able to what, is required to do, in order to get, that grade should have some merit, in the grade that they, received that they could take and actually utilizing whatever. Career path they're they're? Going down so? You, know it's, interesting I don't know that, that I like it or dislike it, but it's very interesting well I like it Shannon because. The am bishops ones will, grab this and they'll go home and they'll start in I remember. When I was, an undergraduate and there was a certain basic psychology class and I. Went, to the first lecture Shannon there was maybe six hundred students in. That lecture hall it was a humongous lecture hall, but the professor said, every single person is capable of an a in this basic, course now we cover a lot of ground so this is what you need to do I don't. Rate on a curve. I grade, ABC or fail or no pass is is the structure was, in other words you want a great in this and you don't pass you, get a no credit? Then. You're going to have to pay tuition again for this course in other words they didn't give DS or Fs is just a b or c now if you want an a. this is what you need to do there are fifteen TA's as get with office hours start figuring it out. Come in and, take all Of your chapter exams you're, on your own ready go I like that I got, an a. I was. Ambitious cannon well I think that's a good idea the I, think it is you're. The, and students who really could care less but you know what they're gonna do that whether or not they pick. The greater not so I agree with you I think it's a great idea I, like the idea of someone coming in, and, saying hey I can get as and I can make. It happen and and it's an, agreed upon contract I, think it's a good idea I like it it's agreed upon contract also because let's say you're on the, football team and you let's say you're premed. And you could give a damn about English let's say it's, an English class and, you say listen there's no way I, can be med and football team and no all get. All this reading done so, he goes to the prophet and he says I wanna be a. C. student in, your I aim to be a c. student in your class what. Do, I need to do to get a c. because overall at the. End of the day meaning the end of the. Four years that I'm, here I got a pass And I gotta also keep. My scholarship on the football team the swim team or, whatever, they're on or and I also have a girlfriend in my life or whatever whatever else is. Going on it strikes me that. This is really. Smart for time management for the art of being a student really being a student. With schedules and making, a deadlines and carving out time Chuck I. I wish and this is life I wish more, students, and professors had this kind of thing so if you're, premed and you go I need to get. A b. and biochemistry but I can coast in, English a little bit then okay aim for, that and then see where you fall Terry this is. Why I love your show so much after listening to your intelligent, and Shannon quite frankly her intelligent, review ideas of how this would work and how it, is a positive thing I'm now a. Believer I agree with, you that is it's a great idea and, if it's done the way that you're talking about, with, the, students that have all those different, things to do haven't been a football player during school, myself I like it I'm all for. It so if you had to think if you can think back, now and save yourself well maybe I should. Have organized my undergraduate years as such do you think you. Would have gone to every. Prophet and say all right this is my schedule or every day that kind of helps and coaches you through what do you think I absolutely would have I mean thinking back on, it, it's brilliant, because I can remember. Thinking you know I gotta do x. y. z. just to. Get a d. in a particular class, stay on the football team right and I, had to figure that out on my own but if. I. Could if I could have gone up to my you. Know my teacher to begin with and say hey listen I need at least a z, whatever it, may be because I'm more interested in football but I want to pass your class I Quite frankly really, liked well Chuck I'm glad you're learning. This Elbow. Elbow little late. In life because you know. What it. Is it is life so let's. Leave it there good discussion I hope. I've convinced some people I wish it was, more my case I only. Had a few classes like that but I think it's effective you going to Aim High and if you fall.

"Stereotypes. Wrong when you think about that No Let me read this next story. To, yeah Let me ask you this you. Were in college not too long ago grant how many of your university professors let you decide at the beginning of? The semester what? Your grades should. Be zero, isn't that weird that's so crazy I mean there was pass, fail classes which you pretty much just passed. But I've never understood the? Pass fail class is that just teacher, laziness I think it's just classes that they they want you to pay money. To take the you, don't need to take so they're just like I'll just get. A pass and I won't fail, another class I took one pass, fail class and. At the end of it I went wait so the. By the way we we had one test we didn't. Have any finals and? We? Had no projects and what's the point why why do we even, show it actually was a very interesting. Class but it was a classical humanities class it really how. Much have I used it in my. Life the answer is a big fat. Zero By the way total side note here I was, watching jeopardy tournament of champions the other. Night and the final question two of them got it wrong. Mandy got it right I'm just saying Now, of course I got most of, the other questions wrong on tournament of champions but I felt pretty good about myself for that brief moment that. I guess the. Question was probably rhyme time right was in nineteen ninety three a production of, this play at the, objection of the. Playwright's family was done. With a, small. All female cast And the answer was waiting for Godot 'cause, I was immediately clicking through all. Male casts that would that would it would it wouldn't have worked with female cast waiting for Goodell right there I got it right and I high myself at my. Kitchen like that I did because I do that sometimes at home A literature class at Davidson college, defense in college is a reliably. Solid liberal arts college and I've had a few. Stories about Davidson college in the past but this one really is unique it's a good school Davidson is a good school there is now a professor professor Melissa Melissa. Gonzalez for her introduction. To Spanish literatures and cultures course SPA to seventy. If you want to just sign up for it She has offered a system of contract grading with her students it works like this The students. Enter. The. Class and decide what grade they think, they should get in the course right okay that sounds good because I'm gonna go. I deserve an a. She is then going to let the students. Specify. The. Work that they think would be appropriate, to achieve that grave Okay let let me let me. Read this to? You oh it's so small hang on this, semester I'll be using contract creating for the first time what is that it means that at the start this semester each student will determine what's grade they plan to earn. In the course and will sign, a contract indicating that the work they, will do in order to earn that grade, at the end of this semester if the. Student completed the specific work they said they would at a satisfactory level they received the grade they plan to receive Now listen to the. Logic behind contract grading This is so insane It's billed as a way to eliminate the student professor power differential and to give students control. Of their? Own education guess what my friends there should be a student professor power differential because. One is the student. One is the teacher. They are not equal they. Should never be equal they should never. Be treated as equals they should be treated as subjugates because they don't know. What the teacher knows one is learning. One. Is learn Ed yes thank. You and MS Gonzalez She argues there's a..
