"And then you've got you see this on a regular basis. The energy business probably won't change as rapidly as that. But i always pay close attention and often we. We use these s. curves describe diffusion technological diffusion where you've got early market shares. It takes a long time. You've got early investments. Very risky in the costs come down. Performance improved reliability. Goes up then. You move out of the niche market into a more widespread diffusion in the reconfiguration of the whole market menu. And we do the math. And it's the same map for describing the spread of virus They have the same intellectual origins. What happens when something. A petri dish are rapidly and takes over market share from its competitors to dash. Then you see the shape curve in a lot of what's interesting in. The energy transition is in the early stages of this s shaped curve. And so what has to do individually to prepare for that my cases Somebody else cases the corporate strategist so the case yet again as an investor is think about what happens when some most of them will die but when some of those organisms that are on the early stages of the need of the of the diffusion. Really take off. And how would you know the takeoff is happening. As opposed to being an illusion. And i think real skill in this business comes from identifying those signposts that tell you got a real revolution here as opposed to the ninety seven revolutions that were predicted. Didn't actually happen. David given us so much great stuff to think about. Thank you so much for joining me. On the energy things podcast. world's pleasure. Nice to talk to you. That was episode for today. Thanks so much to david victor. For taking the time to share his worldview with us you know what was it. Game changing insight for me There were really two one is david's willingness to say i don't know over and over and over because really no one knows and if a visionary academic impaired i'm changes linked to say that That leaves some room for us to say that as well and of course the second one is this idea of changing the metaphor from the decarbonisation toolbox to the decarbonisation workshop or workshops and that leaves a lot of room for thinking about the culture change is required and the inclusive environment for different people. So that that's really interesting and important I hope you like what you heard today.

"And one example of this we a lot of modeling of the decentralisation of the electric grid so what reds and onsite power things like that so when you start really working on that problem but becomes clear. That the bulk of the micro grids and they're interconnected with the macrophage are actually naturally as backed so they have gaseous fuels micro turbines then a lot of renewables storage and things like this here on the. The blend varies and where you are and how wealthy the patriots for your system for the system that. They've installed their at their factory or whatever it is but but fundamentally important role the interaction between the gas system lecture system. We have almost no idea how that interaction. If it's it's the decentralisation the grid really scales up how the interactions gonna work. So we're now doing a whole bunch of work on that question that we would not have. We could have understood that kind of an abstract way. I think about the problem but really modeling it and trying to figure out how you model reliability of energy service zip forces you to zero in on what you do. What does the model wanna do during these peak hours and these times and how was it actually keeping electric service reliable in the micro and so i think we in the analyst community need to do more of that make sure you always it closely connected enough to date on the modeling that you really understand the intuition behind. What's happening the other thing that i do this. Just a great joy as an academic is how the arbitrated work with organizations whether it's engine number one..

"That will be the ibm's of the future or they all going to be Firms that had a run in the mand interesting and that those a great example and it it made me. Think of the the key question you highlighted earlier which what's future of natural gas so it's a big unknown and what are the elements from your perspective that would encourage the success of natural gas. Is it its role and transitioning to setting the the infrastructure for a hydrogen future is all about reducing emissions. Is it finding its way to carbon capture sequestration. What are your thoughts out. Key elements of natural gas natural. Gas's success so i think right now. The the the really profound play around gas is around thinking about gas as part of an infrastructure gaseous fuels. So they're they're in places that make the transition were slowly you could have an infrastructure of gas pipelines and conventional natural gas going through it a lot more renewables on the grid and then the gas used in effect to firm the renewables when you run all that through a model again the caveat that has a simplification but it useful simplification rowlatt through auto. What happens is that the gas plants end up being utilized less factors go down. The volume of gas. Consumption goes down compared to world with gas is the dominant part of the grid but the value propositions on the gas is huge because in effect is making a renewables future possible. We see some texas grid right now. We see that in the upper midwest where this huge amount of wind we see that in the southwestern grids including where i live california when we've got a lot of sold dominated we've got a lot of sun on the system you can go up to and flirting with one hundred percent solar for a while but then what's holding altogether is some combination of hydro a bit of storage allow. Natural gas moving to a future whether zero emissions allowed is a very very different world..

"The world. I grew up in a sense, it was completely crazy, mutually assured destruction, but it makes sense. And you could understand in very simple terms. That states was Soviet Union. We're going to be eviscerated. That was clear. But you About the bonds of parables. You're nostalgic for mutually assured destruction. Is that what's happening now? It seems a much simpler world. Well, you at least knew who to blame for it, right? It's Andy again like that's the thing like you look at the Cold War and you could see, like specifically like Soviets, you Americans, the nukes. That's right. That's right. And now Yeah, well, my supposed to say you two I'm saying Beautiful, Everybody carbon emissions. Speaking of which, today, the world's leading climate, scientists warn it will get work. No doubt. One of the reasons for the current gloom is that we're in the middle of an uncomfortable shift in how we talk about climate change waves will be more frequent and last long. This is made official when the PCC the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, released a report where for the first time they stopped using the language of prevention. And shifted to the language of adaptation. In other words, hundreds of scientists and policymakers, This is the world's top organization for assessing climate change. We're now saying we can't stop it. It's inevitable. So now we need to talk about dealing with the mess that is now on our doorstep. That's David Victor, professor of international relations at University of California, San Diego, and he is one of the authors of the report. When the IPCC first began back in the late 19 eighties, you could imagine That people would take the climate change problem seriously. They would start to control emissions and then over a period of decades, climate would stop changing and instead, what's happened is people have talked a lot about climate change, but they haven't actually done much to control emissions. And now, he says, We're on this strange middle ground where we're trying to find the language to say why it's important to keep working at this. While at the same time Admitting some degree of failure, and that's the kind of inevitability that I think you see in the new the new reports, and the reports are bending over backwards to try and find ways to be optimistic, the report says. If you put into place all these technologies and international agreements we could we could still stop warming up two degrees. My own assessment is that the kinds of actions you need to do that are so heroic that We're not going to see them on this planet. All of which reminded me of that true detective moment, I'd consider myself a realist time putting yourself in terms on what's called a pessimist. Okay. What's that mean? Well, pessimists like nihilist.
