"That the penny may have met the end of its life And I say that because Congress tends to focus on savings devices like getting rid of the penny When there's a reason to focus on currency Right now the director of the mint has just left we have an acting director The president has to pick a new director of the mint within a 180 days I think I'd be interested in that Be around money one day I can do that Penis It is But the other thing is that the government will give a revenue They've got the build back better Bill And they've come up with all these different ideas to come up with revenue to pay for it But it's a lot of money And the new ideas they've replaced with the older ideas which are very traditional we know exactly how much revenue we're going to raise from raising the corporate income tax from raising individual tax rates But we don't really know how much money we're going to raise from a 15% minimum tax from a stock buyback tax We know pretty much how much we can raise from getting rid of the penny It's about a $133 million a year Which is not a whole lot right when you're talking about 400 billion for tax on it but it's something and I think in the scrum of things when they're coming up with revenue to fill gaps when congressional budget office comes up with an estimate that they're short so much revenue Getting rid of the penny might come to mind and they said I'll just stick it in And that's the end of that right Something inconceivable can happen overnight So okay so say they take all the pennies retire them pay for some stuff Is there an investable angle to this They're like winners and losers in the stock market if we ditch the penny So I think there are And the reason I say that is because Canada got rid of the penny not so long ago And there have been some studies on what happened when they're penny went away Some retailers especially gas stations grocery stores places like that raised their prices because you can no longer charge and sense anymore You have to charge Nichols and dimes And by the way most prices end in a 9 And so what are you going to do You have to round up And even retailers that round down tend to round up later on So they get the credit for rounding down and then later on they say well you know and then they have to raise their prices 5 or ten cents at a time And so prices go up faster I think about that The grocery store in particular it's always seems to be 99 99 So the grocers I guess would be a big one Exactly That's right That's like 95 cents But then to your point if you had a price increase you go straight up to the dollar Yeah exactly How about the dollar stores What are you doing Yeah I mean the dollar store doesn't only sell stuff as a dollar They have other stuff But so okay so some fast food grocery stores what about stuff like Dollar Tree dollar store Yeah exactly those too They're going to have to raise their prices as well And the people that go to those stores are more likely to spend their money using currency Because the people that tend to do that are underbanked or unbanked They don't have bank accounts that are of credit cards they have to use cash And so they're the ones that are going to use pennies And they're the ones that will have to pay in nickels and dimes And by the way a lot of countries when they get rid of the penny they end up producing more nickels and dimes and quarters What does that mean Well Nichols times and quarters are made out of copper and nickel The penny is the only coin made out of zinc And so you have a zinc producer in Tennessee The only zinc producer that supplies the U.S. mint is located in Tennessee If you get rid of the zinc contract that's a $126 million of the consequence sold for a producing a penny But then you have the only niggle producer in the United States London mining and Michigan They would get more orders for nickels dimes and quarters Winners and losers Other than that other than the zinc producer in Tennessee has anybody else against this So there are a lot of people on the hill who seem to be extremely opposed to the penny The last time they had a hearing on the penny well it was really on the penny but they spent most of the time talking about the penny was when David Ryder was made the head of the mint And he got peppered with questions about the penny Some of the legislators are saying things like the penny to me is just litter When I see it on the ground I just kick it into the street I never pick it up and David rider said well I always pick up pennies but of course he's the mint director And apparently there's a penny contingent pro penny In Congress And most of those folks are from Illinois Why Because Lincoln's on the penny So they don't want to get rid of it It gets political And senator Durbin is essentially the head of that contingent he's in the Senate He's the second most powerful senator in the Senate amongst Democrats How are you getting to get rid of the penny when Durbin's in power There's nothing I don't love about this conversation And I feel like it's an SNL skit Yeah Waiting to happen Andrew thanks a lot Andrew silverman whom are intelligence government.

"The official number in just a couple of days but that is value we have never seen in the state of Michigan in our history for the third highest in the nation behind California and Pennsylvania both of which have higher populations and off and were higher than any great lakes they even favor hard hit like New York it's hard to believe is not that bad we have taken a bigger hit with unemployment now think about that a million you were looking at based on this then a quarter of our population may be filing over working population now maybe filing for unemployment and in there was I I was on the the briefing that he had with reporters today and it was a lot of good stuff there first of all yes the four point six billion dollar trust fund for an appointment cop no other state did as well and funding it at the appropriate levels than Michigan did that's paying off for us now the money will be there for you they think could be drained by half if this thing goes into July if you are trying to file today they ask that your last name and with an M. through Izzy and please consider filing during off peak hours after eight PM if you have already filed please don't log back in because you're just adding to the hundreds the at the call center so far seventy percent think about the seventy percent have been approved that have gotten through and most of those that were denied or no eligible because they are accepting those applications from people that are self employed independent contractors low wage ten ninety nine workers and they are taking those calls now though again you gotta go for the off peak hours you normally there's a twenty eight day window where you're supposed to apply for unemployment benefits if you're unable to file because you can't get through because you haven't they because of I. T. problems and if the pandemic is why you're unemployed then they say that they will waive that twenty eight day window and just enough Frio who heads up you why a set on this briefing that they are making progress this is what he told Paul W. this morning cut ten the website as a result and we're doing things to make sure that people are paid over three hundred fifty million dollars have already been changed to six hundred thousand individuals in the state of Michigan we have another hundred fifty thousand we're gonna get paid very shortly and those other folks whose who applied were processing their claims as quickly as we can but we know that's that's small comfort in some ways to people who are needing that extra help to file so we're doing things like adding capacity making sure we have you know almost five hundred people taking and customer come cases and making sure that we solve problems were adding servers to the website was set up with an I. T. team just to help with password resets and other issues that might be associated with an account we also made sure to expand benefits to people who are independent contractors ten ninety nine employees and self employed to work otherwise eligible previously and so there you heard it from the man himself at eight U. I. A. they are making progress on this patients though that was something that he certainly played a poor as he was talking with Paul W. today let's get back to your calls and that travel on out to canton and see what's on Dave's mind this afternoon hello Dave hi guys it's not there you know I I think I think that it's it's kind of funny right now now after trump yesterday who wrongly declared that he was he had the all power to bring everybody back to work and open up the states again it's kind of funny how this morning we hear that there's two groups of states that are now cooperating on how they're going to re open and how previously probably less than a month ago New York and and genetic if they were at odds with you know the people traveling through Connecticut with New York license plates and what not yeah you know they didn't get along then there get along just fine now because the president said they'll go along when he says so so that tells me that you know sometimes the president speaks in in metaphors like we say if you want to set the Mexicans are going to pay for the wall I don't think yet message they're actually going to stroke a check for us I think what he meant was one way or the other they're gonna pay for and right now yeah that's the goal the problem is though Dave he sounds constitutionally talked up when he does it you really you know and here's the thing and I I agree with you I think but a guy I should point out in terms of timing they were working on that regional coordination long before he dropped this on them and so was Michigan yeah there were there was this regional court because they realize from a calmer standpoint that there is gonna be a lot of border crossing and that they what they wanted and they also want to get you know good input I think that's a good thing especially when it comes to workplace safety they pick the breast brains they can and that's not necessarily a bad thing but you're right it is more than a little cure hits fifty office are all hunky dory after the president read them the riot act it does certainly look that way that that that was that was in the works for a while you take care David Ryder call let's go to Allen in Roseville Allen good afternoon with you okay let's go to Robert in sterling heights that he we haven't heard from in awhile how you doing Sir good guy had just been listening you know find out things from shows and everything good source of information that you know gasoline eighty nine cents a gallon a cosco I can't drive anywhere so I can like like you could get us killed me I would fill up in like two weeks out what I want to claim that you know some of the things our governor don had been got in some things seem very confusing and indecisive like when Paul W. Smith asked her about the state income tax to be delayed she didn't have an answer for it took a long time to do that this is the federal government did that because the two are related very closely she should've done it right away which did come out with a directive about you know doctors have no legitimate purpose of prescribing things are for medical purposes and then she later rescinded the order that seems very indecisive to me are confusing and her directives lately where I can understand I hope it's true or not tell me if I'm I'm right or wrong I could have someone fertilize my lawn but I can't have someone cut my lawn and if you do something like a you have to let people know why it's being done I can understand he said Hey all plus drivers have to wear face masks and gloves because for protection of everybody else in people would understand that it will bite you know obey by but if you come with things that are on the size of a very confusing I can understand why I'll have to not what some call my mom but I can let someone fertilizers yeah first well my understanding is that fertilizing isn't allowed either indicated because it's an and I can tell you one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit is a fertilizing company that so that suing her as for the edict on the drugs that didn't come from the governor's office that came from licensing and regulation and was if you're if you read the letter it was really more about poor wording than anything else but what you raise look and I think you'll agree Robert anytime you need an FAQ page that has four hundred fifty fifty cubes on it but maybe your order is a little bit too arbitrary and confusing yeah most people don't like they don't know how to begin pieces tell me why I have to do it and make make head that makes sense it's just very confusing in the state have been and like you don't know what you're doing it is in the coming up of four oh five as I said we're gonna be talking with the leader of the chamber about how they would change this and we'll find out just how confusing it is for businesses when they are entering a phase where hopefully they can make decisions about whether to go back to business or not Robert take care it's always great to hear from you let's quickly go I've only got a minute but let's go to Dan and Detroit Dan good afternoon Hey guys how are you you're not just on here to get my car looked at each and you know I took a drive back by the Detroit examiner's office and over by the hospital there in Detroit where the route the refrigerated trailers are are sitting outside and you can just imagine the scene inside the trailers my point is you know three days ago I was kind of like the rough I wanted to get everything opened up I'm not trying to drive over here just sit there and take a look even if you opened up separate business right now I don't think I think you will come to the real ale realization real fast the business and what you think it's.
