"Three sports talk Saturday coming your way right now, making a recording Griswald hanging out with you all morning and into the afternoon. I'm going back to the Western Hotline for my final guest of the afternoon. It's Pete Jensen. He's a senior. Fantasy editor over at NHL Network Pete First time, Long time. Just kidding. It's been a long time. No man, it's good. Oh, it's good to have young. Um, Unfortunately, I wish it was under more positive circumstances. But we'll talk about the rest of the league and the playoffs that are about to get underway here. But yeah, I'm at first were gonna rip offs and scabs and talk about the sabers. Yeah. I mean, it's tough because you see what went on in the division outside of Buffalo, right? You saw like the Rangers have a really good season, missed the playoffs because they drew the tough straw and played in a division with Couple other jug or not, So even like with the Flyers going off the rails, Rangers were unable to make the playoffs. Nor where the sabers then the Rangers go ahead and pretty much blow up most of the organization from the leadership standpoint. With Gordon and John Davidson gone and the coach David Quinn, and then you look at Buffalo, like the expectations were also high, but it's just It's crazy like how the league has reacted to just this shortened season and things like that. But clearly, Buffalo has some issues and the biggest one is the Jack Eichel situation, which is just Such a big topic for us fantasy wise because he's a top 15 player in the league, you know, but I mean, if he's not happy there, if if they have to move on, it's just like it's an unfortunate thing for all the fans and buffalo that they couldn't Seymour out of Michael Yeah, I think maybe the worst part about it. Pete is just the continued narrative that oval trade him to the to the kings. But don't even mention by fields name don't even do it. Don't always go into the Rangers Will. You can't even talk cock. Oh, so it's like to me. How can you have these conversations around moving Jack Eichel when you can't even mention the team's top prospect, coming back and return and and what does that say to you about the state of the rest of the league and how they're viewing this Jack Eichel situation does. Guess. Does it speak to how dire the situation here in Buffalo is that even though they still have the leverage of right now, this year, this is the sabers have the most leverage right now heading into the season with the no trade clause kicking in next offseason. So does it say more about the state of the franchise? That there is still this view that even though they hold the cards in terms of financial and note movement clause that they're still being talked about is well, they're not getting anyone's top one or two prospects. I mean, what does that say about the state of this franchise and the leverage that they have in any Jack Eichel trade? Well, the state of play of the whole league right now. It's tough because you know it's during the pandemic. Luckily, they were able to play the season. But you know, a lot of these teams didn't have any fans for most of the season and Another cap is flat and their teams out there that are on the custom contention. Some that air in the playoffs that would love to add and Michael and, you know, I mentioned the Rangers obviously, like Seem like Montreal or Minnesota that are in the playoffs clearly need on elite center on the roster. But in order to do so, like you're you're strapped in terms of your cap. Constraints and stuff like that, so and then you have some top prospects. But you know these teams they're not like The sabers are not in the driver's seat, because it's kind of a falling out if they if they do have betrayed him, you know, it's not like we're these teams can they all feel well? Feel free to give up cold Caufield for? You know, like, why would they? Why would they offer them? It's gonna be the leverage is not Really in Buffalo's end. Unfortunately, so even though I kal is a proven, you know, top flight player in the league, so that's what's going to be. I'm sure like some of the conversations will be. It's gonna be really tough, you know? I think they're going to be able to get a lot back in return for a player of Michael's caliber, but It's unfortunate like this injury this year is a serious one, right if it was like a neck injury, and then you know throughout his Buffalo career, it's like coaching change after coaching change and You know you don't pin all of that on Jack Eichel, but especially, you know, the captain of the team past couple years. It's you know, it's been more and more on him, the more and more that it happens. So that's just something that follows the player. As he has You know progress in his career. Unfortunately, so the numbers speak for themselves, but there's a lot more attached to this situation clearly, and I think I mean, obviously, the same conversation is likely being had about Sam Reinhart, who's coming off of Ah. By the way, a top 10 scoring season in the league. Maybe his most consistent start to finish campaign We've seen from Sam Reinhart, and I think what it speaks to Pete is how long it can take in this league for young players to find their game and hit their ceiling, and it's what makes it so disappointing that you know, you have finally got to a point where Sam Reinhart's playing his best hockey. You have Jack Eichel, who sort of entering into that prime of his career, and now we're talking about them moving on from them before you get to actually reap the benefits off those dry Have pecs and I think you know the same conversation will eventually be had about Rasmus Darlene, who I think had a really nice turnaround under Don Coronado compared to the system he was playing in with Ralph Krueger. But you know, you look at this team and you say to yourself. It feels P Taylor wise or not far, and I was talking about this with Joe. You're done earlier here, and we talked about how There's this disconnect in the term Byeon, which has been used a lot by Kevin Adams, and by the previous coaching staff in this current one, where you have this talent and Taylor halls perfect example of this Taylor Hall scores, two goals and whatever it is 40 games here in Buffalo 35 games and he goes, he goes and scores five in the 1st 10 games when he's in Boston, I think buy in is an interesting way to basically say. I don't know. Try hard play your best game and like like, what is it about this team, But they can't get their best players or really talented players to buy into what they're trying to do on the ice and doesn't speak to him or organizational problem, Or is this strictly They didn't have the right coach. Maybe they do now and maybe that it's a simple is just the coach in the scheme. The coach is a huge part of it right. I mean, the night and day turn around when they're in the midst of that long losing streak, and they fired through there and then the way they played down the stretch was like really encouraging. And like, I mean, Ryan hard played his best hockey down the stretch for sure. And you saw middle stature step of. I mean middle stead last year's like in the H..

"The head coach of the New York Rangers. And that's David Quinn here on CBS Sports Radio coach. Thanks for the time. How are you doing pretty well you're doing. I'm doing fantastic. Honestly. No, I'm doing actually come about 3 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday will have an enjoyable Saturday. If you guys get a victory for you and me both. So now no one. The sports coming back. I know you had the exhibition last night up against the Islanders. Since the sport was taken away from us in March. And all that has gone on in the world now have in the sports start back up. How do you put these last few months into perspective? Well, it's always been a unique time valleys these last few months, and, you know, one thing that's happened is, I think, ah, the NHL's on an incredible job making us all feel safe. And if you're going You gonna start sports up again? That's the first priority for everybody, and I think it is allowed our players to start up in a manner where they can focus on hockey, not be concerned or overly concerned. With the pandemic and the you know the chances of not of put themselves in a position where you know they could they could get the disease so ah, you know, kudos to the NHL for the way they handled this whole situation and what they put together appearance or out the window badminton. But we've all gone through this awful pandemic since March here in the United States, What have you really learned about yourself individually when you have to not only manage your family and your personal life but also manage a hockey team throughout all this, where everyone was spread out all over the place before you guys got back to plan a Yeah, we really Ah, You know, I did the right thing once this pandemic hit when we landed from Colorado on the 11th of March. I just went to White Plains and stayed out there for From old time relations. We left Toronto on did everything I could to make sure I was doing my part, Uh, keeping people scheme myself saved my family safe. And you know the people around me say so. Um, you know, with all that free time you do an awful lot of self reflecting not only professionally but personally as well and So, from a professional standpoint, spent off a lot of time, you know, evaluating our players and evaluating her staff. Looking for things that we might be able to do differently to put our team in the best position to win hockey games and It was. It was a worthwhile experience, and we certainly have approached the last 2.5 weeks, probably a little bit differently than we did earlier. Tryingto just improves the staff and, um, you know, trying to make our players the best players that can possibly be and So we're excited to get the opportunity to play in this qualifying round against a very good Carolina team. How do you think when you do that reflection how you've grown from year 12 year too, as the head coach of the Rangers. I think whenever you take a new job, regardless of experience you have. Ah, there's a learning curve, but I certainly be you from a college job and, you know, took an NHL head coaching jobs. A big jump. And it is ah, different job even though you're coaching the same sport, But I've been very fortunate, you know, head coaching American Hockey League for three years and assistant coach in the NHL, so I did have a lot of familiarity is what all the pro game worked. And it is different for sure. Um, you know, in college, you've got an awful lot of responsibilities as a head coach of a program your Making sure your players are taking care of themselves academically, athletically and socially. At this level, it's certainly is more of a business. The players are on their own way More. That being said, I think there's an opportunity as a coach to make a difference in their lives. Away from the rink as well, because I think there's a correlation for a player who's doing the right thing away from the rink to do the right thing at the rink. So you know I was. I went through the normal learning curve has taken a new job, but I certainly feel a lot better about it the second year. I don't know, if comfortable is the right word, because sometimes that gets associated with complacency. And I know that you're all hungry Coach and you want to bring a Stanley Cup back to New York as we're talking to David Quinn right now on CBS Sports Radio. With all that adjustment, though, and even with your background as well, how long did it take you to be comfortable coaching the Rangers? Well, I think you know probably. Ah, You know, I don't ever was not comfortable. I might be more comfortable now, but I never No, even from the day that I get hired to the press conference through training camp or not, I was never nervous or uncomfortable. And that being said I'm more comfortable today than I was then and I I really reflect back on my career and and all the jobs I was fortunate to have. I really thought that it had prepared me for this opportunity. You know, there's a knot in your stomach. Maybe when you take a job, you're not sure you're really ready for the nervousness that may You. May you may have. I don't have that when I took the Ranger's job is crazy that might sound What did you make of the exhibition last night? Ah mixed bag. I didn't love some of the things that went on. I liked the star didn't like our Finnish thought. We got frustrated, started to force offense play too slow from the neutral zone. But Nothing. I did like I like their penalty killing like the defensive zone structure in our transition defense and I was come back to if we do those things well, we're gonna have a chance to win because we can score goals on if we just cleaned things up from an offensive perspective and have a little bit more snarl to our game offensively. Really if we could combine out with some of the good things we did last night. Ah, like chances. Everyone's been through the same layoff via feel like your team is knocked off some of the rosters. There's still some rust. The knockoff. I guess I think there may be a little bit more Russell knockoff. I think every team will go through that. I think. So that being said, I think we're in a good spot. I do. I think we've been building day by day and one things we've talked about Brick by brick and I think we're you know, we could have another good day tomorrow practice. It's another opportunity to put ourselves in a position to win hockey game on Saturday, and we have to take advantage of our practice time tomorrow, talking to David Quinn, the coach of the Rangers, they get set open things up on Saturday at noon Eastern against the Carolina Hurricanes in Toronto..

"He has missed it win number four hundred and fifty and you feel bad for right? I mean, the devils are not a great offensive team. Halmahera didn't play hall's not playing in the game forty one shots on goal. So Rangers are still learning their way here playing out the string, and you feel bad for Hank. Hank? Scott's a milestones. He's trying to catch here. Trying to get the four fifty before the end of the season, and he's never had a year in the National Hockey League where he didn't at least win twenty games and that streak is clearly in jeopardy. Stuck on eighteen with three games left to play. Now. I think the original plan was he was supposed to win the game last night. And then have one of the last three starts to try to get twenty. But David Quinn said after the game that he may be open to giving hang a couple of opportunities here down the stretch to try not not only get four fifty but try to keep that twenty win streak alive. So he's going to have to win both of them. So does he play against Ottawa tomorrow? With the day's rest Ottawa worst team in the National Hockey League a chance to maybe get four fifty at home in the nineteen and that he can get one of the last two home against Columbus or at the Pittsburgh Penguins. And at least giving give Hank a meaningful game. Columbus could be still battling to make the playoffs Pittsburgh and still be very much alive for home ice advantage and give him a couple of chances at a meaningful game over the weekend. So got a hankering here that the long Quist is going to get to more starts in these last three to at least get the opportunity to get twenty. But give Lundquist credit. You know, he's not making it about himself. He is clearly on board for the rebuild. He even said, listen, I'll do whatever the coach tells me to do that. He said the way that I've played five consecutive losses here all in regulation. Just three wins in his last fifteen that, hey, I don't deserve the plug your gab been better than me so Hanky even left the door open that of coach wanted to play your Gavin the final three games of the season. He'd be cool with that. But the organization also wants to honor a guy that's been a good soldier for them for the last fourteen years. So. Let's see if David Quinn gives them that opportunity. I don't think he'll play the back to back games on Friday and Saturday. So if he doesn't play tomorrow, it looks like it'll probably be over as far as getting twenties concern. And if he does play at least gives a little meaning to what is meaningless in the standings, the Rangers in the senators have Madison Square Garden tomorrow. Let's talk about tonight huge games for the Canadians. The blue jackets and the hurricanes all three of those teams only one spot for those three teams. Right. So all I mean, only one two of those teams can get those three spots. Right. So somebody's going to be on the outside looking in when the music stops right now Montreal's on the outside looking in their home against Tampa. So on the surface that looks like it's it's rough..

"They don't play again until Thursday, but it's again against the Nashville predators. They can play their best game and still come up short. I wouldn't be too concerned about the devils just yet. Tim occasional says with the changing of the guard for central division contenders Nashville, Winnipeg, hell, even Colorado. Do you think Saint Louis Chicago might enter a rebuild face? They don't look like they stand a chance with how tough that division is. Well, you saw saying Louis, make the deal with buffalo and they've got so much talent up front. I don't think they have an appetite for rebuild the just to find the goaltending and if they do, I think they can be up there with those. Top teams, Chicago clearly as in rebuild, even though they'd have a lot of talented players you saw last year tapes took a step back and they just couldn't handle it. He's been better so far this year. We'll see what happens with Crawford, but I think Chicago's probably more of a rebuild right now than Saint Louis is Michael Farrell says a lot of kneeland to talk out there. If you're the canes, could you trade a peci for kneeland or while she's a good solid defenceman but you know what I think that makes sense. That's a defense been certainly Toronto can use Carolina would certainly be able to add to the firepower that they already have question is what else would Carolina have to give up? I'm not sure that's going to be nearly enough. Philip says, hi, not a big thing, but I noticed that you've been calling the connects goalie, Mark Anderson. His name is actually Jacob market strum off k. hope you're is better. And I have to say that your twins are adorable. Thank you. Well, sometimes again, talking extemporaneously, it doesn't come out the way I wanted to. But you're right markets Strobe and Nielsen have played very well for Vancouver. So thank you for the correction. Michael silver says, David Quinn said yesterday to things. He talked start again. David Quinn said yesterday that the things he talked to twenty Dangelo about needing to do are things that need to be done in practice in order to crack the lineup. However, what isn't clear are the things Tony knows he needs to do? What do you think they could be? Well, it's it's about being a little bit more responsible in your own end. I mean, that's really what it comes down to here. I haven't seen that much of him because he seemed like he got benched right away, but the there just seems to be better passes. I think they're just better responsibility where he needs to be little things like that. Certainly, David Quinn knows more than I do, but when you hear the things have to be correct and practice, it seems that it's not that he's overwhelmed by the speed of the competition. Now that he's overwhelmed by the physicality, he's just not putting himself in the right positions, and that's certainly something that could be corrected in practice crisis high. Don, which is worse. Another frustrating flyers loss or that there were soundly defeated by Colorado Avalanche team. That in two years went from worst team in the league to possible Cup contenders while the flyers still appear to be mired in mediocrity. Well, Colorado is bad for awhile, right? And they've hit home runs now. Landes Gog was first and it took a while. I think for him to emerge into a star player. I thought they gave him the captaincy way too early. All right. Ranson ends been a great fine for them. McKinnon has as well. Now they figured out the goaltending which is something Philadelphia's trying to do here. But you know the outside of that one year, which I think was the first year coming out of lockout when Philadelphia think was the worst team in the NHL. There hasn't been a lot of just those pieces they've been able to bring in there. Hoping Patrick is going to be that player and it's going to take maybe a little bit more time to see if he can emerge and be that player..

"Garden Rangers of job, four of their last five games, tough loss on Saturday afternoon against Edmonton and the Rangers got to get going here and they've got Colorado tonight in an at Washington tomorrow. So those a lot of good feelings when the Rangers beat the the sharks on Thursday that come from behind victory in the third period end up winning that game in overtime. And I was a big win. David Quinn gets his first National Hockey League win, but a tough loss against Edmonton. When I thought they really had a chance with a team reeling at the back end of a fifteen game road a fifteen day road trip. And a blues game and regulation. You end up losing the next two in the next two days that could be start that really even a rebuilding year can be kind of disconcerting for David Quinn, Jeff Gordon, the powers that be with a New York ranger. So very interesting, early season game for the New York Rangers against Colorado Avalanche tonight, devils off to a three star. We talked about it yesterday. You can get excited about the devils and you should Paul Mary's off to a great start. They're getting goals without the benefit of Taylor hall. Pretty much in their goaltending from Kincaid has been good Burma. They started three in Orlando here, so they're taking on a Dallas Stars team that I'm sure is like biting through chains right now after losing the Ottawa the night before. So the devils will play their fourth game three and against the three and into Dallas Stars, keep an eye on the Florida Panthers team that everybody paved to be a team to beat in the Atlantic Division same for Philadelphia, very underachieving, early in the season, the metropolitan division. So one of the teams that have been the most disappointing in the Atlantic, the Panthers flyers, a little disappointing, two and three two. The season after getting a big win on opening night in Vegas against the Golden Knights. So let's watch this game of two teams, which one of these teams is going to kinda step board here very interested game in Philadelphia connects and the penguins in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh's to one and one, but I would not call them impressive at all..

"Vegas and i think they love being the underdog and i think the right now barry trots and his team love the fact that everybody's talking about the golden knights and nobody's talking about them this is exactly what the doctor ordered if you're capitals fan so i'm leading towards washington but again i'll have a more indepth pick coming up tomorrow got to spend the morning over madison square garden for the david quinn press conference as he was introduced as the next head coach that york rangers of course from b u fifty three years old coach to be you was an assistant coach under joe sacco with the colorado avalanche coming out of the lockout so he does have some nhl experience the vibe by god is is that he is he'd really was not going to leave b u unless the job was a spectacular one and you can tell that the rangers were the one job he flat out said at that he would take but you felt that he was genuine because he loved his job at bu he felt that there was work still to be done there but when an original sixteen like the rangers come calling and he said something else pretty interesting he said every time jeff gordon the general manager of the rangers brought up the philosophy of what he wanted to see out of a coach quinn said that's exactly how he feels that's what's in his dna so he believes he sends some pot akot with this ranger organization and we'll see how it works thirty three percent of nhl players have come from the college system about half of the rangers roster comes from the college system including very important players like jimmy v c kevin hayes chris kreider brady shea all very important to the future of this organization so they might be in rebuild mode the rangers but make no mistake this rebuild is something they want to do quickly they want to be able to do it on the fly and they want to be a successful organization the upcoming season so congratulations today vid got a chance to talk to him a little bit seems like a really good guy cut from that mike sullivan mode they're close their friends matter of fact both were up.

"I go out with you at what point do you say okay screw it your i don't wanna go out with me yes but if you really believe that somebody is the right person go get them and i believe that if jeff gordon really believes that david quinn is the right guy for the new york rangers then you do what you can to get that guy you know we talked about this last week a little bit for years and years the nhl stay away from college coaches yup really stayed away and now whether it's hacksaw whether it's montgomery now it's quinn it is very much more thing in the nhl like it's hard to go we talked about this suit hard to go from junior hockey rate to the nhl peter devore was able to do that but that's more the exception than the rule those that whole wave of hiring american hockey coaches after budo found success with washington going back to two thousand seven do we start now to see more college coaches getting attention from the national hockey league and getting jobs right in the nhl as head coach on i think it says to me jeff is at the league is getting younger and the number one thing coach has to be able to do now is get guys to play for him right and this guy apparently knows how to get people to play for him and that is huge now and the league is younger you know when you coaching college jim montgomery's teams had some older players david quinn's teams tended to have i think most a lot of younger players at b c r b you excuse me so i think what that says to me is that at college you get the swing between the eighteen year olds and the twenty three year olds right so you see both ends of the spectrum but i think now this is a young league so the thing to me is you're not the first guy on nhl network last week and they were like is new york and eat david coin alive and i'm like if the guy can coach you makes the youngest player younger players better their fans are going to be ecstatic with that that's what they want right so if you think that this guy our college coaches are prepared now because they deal with younger players that's why you're going for.

"Do we read anything into the rangers strategy for free agency by this hiring well you'll the one thing is i think like most other teams they're going to take a look at two vars and see if he has interest but you know right now you know it's you against thirty other teams although some obviously have better chances than others but i don't know if you can count on that right now so this says to me that they are prepared to go the long way you know i wouldn't be surprised if they brought a rick nash back at a lower number if something like that happens even grabner back at a similarly low number and go from there but i think in less like taveras says yet you're my choice i think they're going to be conservative they've got to find out if some of these guys can play he liked the hiring i do i think that it's interesting like the only thing that makes me wonder about it is it's clear that they really had to work them to go and sometimes you know we've talked about this it's like dating if somebody really doesn't wanna go out with you at what point do you say okay screw it your laws don't wanna go out with me yes but if you really believe that somebody is the right person go get them and i believe that if jeff gordon really believes that david quinn is the right guy for the new york rangers then you do what you can to get that guy you know we talked about this last week a little bit for years and years the nhl stayed away from college coaches yup really stayed away and now whether it's hacksaw whether it's montgomery now it's quinn it is very much more thing in the nhl it's hard to go we talked about this too it's hard to go from junior high.

"Bullpen at all you got to good starting pitchers and then after that it's just basically who knows and currently as currently constituted they're one of the worst offensive teams in all of baseball that's what they are are right before memorial day as a head on the road to face to really good teams in the national league in the milwaukee brewers in the atlanta braves for eight game so good luck with that group traveling after what just happened you can't even beat miami and home two out of three you're supposed to sweep this series good luck in those eight games against those two teams over the the next week week plus you know and people will call it all morning and they'll say that they're twenty four and twenty one there you know maybe four or five games out of first place if the three and a half games out of first place why are we panicking why are we saying this i mean because it's kind of like a little bit of a reoccurring theme they can't score runs and they can't hold the lead and those are two things that are paramount to winning baseball games right and i to me i don't suspect that they're going to be a playoff team they may be middling around five hundred here for a little while but i just think that there's just not enough offense there and i i'm just trying to transplant what is the future like really what is the there is none so you see more of my ranger pullover today right i'm wearing that an honor the new coach and it's david quinn shark and i think it's great and i think he's here and he's young and he's going to be vibrant he's going to bring a uptempo offense and he he certainly has paid his dues along the way he's had success everywhere he's been and it's great that he's getting a chance to do this thing that the rangers are doing their starting over there are looking for young they're looking for exciting they're drafting you know you know centers in defensemen and they're going to bring them all in there and they're going to try to find the diamonds in the rough where they can and hopefully they have guys and he.

"Due diligence and they ended up getting their college coach guy which i don't think it's a bad way to go some people think that you need a guy who's been around the national hockey league that's the only way you become a good coaches in the national hockey league is being around a national hockey league i don't believe that i believe if you're a good coach or good coach and while it may be a transition period of david quinn has the ability to garner and earn the respect of the players he's got chance to be a nice iron a good coach for the rangers so we'll certainly talk some ranger hockey today mix that in an manton yankees for sure last night's yankee game in one word forgettable it was as forgettable a game as i've seen yankees play certainly in weeks and maybe all season long they got off to a little bit of a slow start and fell well by the boston red sox there early on and yet they played some forgettable games back to back then too but last night was the first time in a long time where they played a basically forgettable game because nothing really went well she says about the who has been a stone cold solid readmission to this team brought him back in a one year contract as certainly giving them more good starts been bad he just wasn't on his game last night walk to many guys too much control issues for c c gave up too many run south res got the big hit against him not a good effort at assisi then behind him some sloppy fielding which the yankees have been a pretty darn good feeling team pretoria since he's come up with played a dynamite second base made a bad play last night and something else the yankees have been very good at why they're still tied both the top the american league east and for the best overall record in baseball they've done a.
