"He was only seventeen I thought I'm already ten years older than these geniuses. It's never going to happen for me. So it's a pretty desperate time, and I went to Memphis without struggle at the forefront of my mind. Apparently, he went to Memphis after reading an interview with James Taylor in which he said, he overcame writer's block by going somewhere. I've never been hoping to find some idea I wouldn't get just by sitting at home. So he reads that. And he's like fucking. I'm going to Memphis. He says, I always knew it was a place. I had to visit because so much of my favorite music came from there from Algren and people's, and everything on hi records to Elvis, Presley Isaak's. David porter and the Stax catalog and almost endless stream of brilliance and soul. K. Out of Memphis. I was aware early on that which I'm like, okay, hipster, relax. I knew members anyone there was something going on in Memphis. I was utterly inexplicable. It was part of what made me want to be a musician in the first place. What's already I'm just like, oh my God. This is so personal for him. I didn't know I honestly thought it was like a songwriting challenge in just like a cool story song about a town. I read a thing where he says, everything in the song is true says hundred autobiographical, which just wanted to, because there's metaphors in like. Into the seconds, this book somebody that goes of Elvis have sex woman in the which is the room that is true. There's a place called the jungle room that I confirm is a place in his house, unless you're sick of hearing, I have two more huge paragraphs about this. I love this. Okay. He goes on to say, I did all the expected touristy things I went to Graceland. I saw Elvis Presley's tomb and his airplanes. Although they do note, he eventually expressed misgivings after singing about Elvis, because once you mentioned Elvis's name, everyone's, like, oh, this is now an Elvis Yong fuck Elvis, looking over the rest of that anyway. A friend told me there were two things in particular had to do things that would forever. Change me. I want to know the friend's name and I wanna fuck in front like that this Presley. Visited. On Christmas Eve, three times they would later become the centerpieces of walking in Memphis, the first thing, honestly, doesn't sound like a quest. This is everything. I love just wanna see I don't think we'll come up again. I think the friends might be mentioned in my punch-up anyway home. I got my I'm so horny for your punch-up, okay? Stay would later become okay? The first thing was to go to the full gospel tabernacle church on Sunday morning to hear Reverend Al green preach sidebar. I didn't know in nineteen eighty five. He was still doing sermons. Is that common out? Green green. Yes, what? Yes. What's green is agree? Yes. She's cry. Visit the most interesting. Okay. It's very white Gezi. But still, like this is incredible that someone even this. Yeah. This is very cool. Yeah. It's a very cool trip, I went to Memphis, and I was like you go downtown, and it's a lame down of a city. I try to see music. But the place was closed by the same exact experience with Nashville, just be like, okay. This is the this is the place everyone loves. Yes. So that I'm like, then I read, I was like, oh, he knew somebody who told him to go. That's the only way to really visit cities, I think, is to have somebody who knows some shit a no reservations episode totally it's easy, but he's also being. Yeah. That's the other thing is he shined a light. I feel like on a cultural moment that might have otherwise been forgotten by history as it. So often is with black Centric things. Right. So he says, I soon had chills running up and down my spine. The service was so deeply moving that I found myself with sweat running down, my face and tears in my eyes. Totally invalid by everything. I was seeing hearing. There was something incredibly powerful about Algarve voice in that context,.

"Ahead david porter but also the the the chapters that i stay within the documentary make sure that these themes are not just touched upon for second like elvis light gospel for three seconds then you move on i really try to stay in that space that interests me that reflects in america that i understand and that incorporates all the influences of of elvis in in a real way and we're up against the break and just a moment let me let david puerto jump in real quick before we have to pause well i simply will agree with what allen and and and tom get elvis was not hiding his appreciation respect for black music i'm just one person i was on beale street during the time that was freaking bills i was so with w herbert bruce elvis would go to a trick and bellevue i mean i know that he was adamant about one is be shown in seeing with with some integrate artists of our time there were african americans now it's not his fault if two speeches are not put out there and those those statements are not made by others but he was certainly not hiding that so i have a great deal of respect and admiration for elvis presley plenty more to discuss as we continue our conversation with david porter allen light and thom zimny especially the kind of cultural image that's come about the image of him on stage in las vegas and also the people who spent time building him up into the star that he wants what we learn about colonel tom parker that we didn't know before this film we'll get to that ahead sticklers.

"A thompson me how did this documentary come about i been working with bruce springsteen on la documentaries and and we had some films at hbo hbo contacted jon landau and myself to discuss this idea of can we tell the elvis presley story in a way that could be different and one of the initial conversations i had with john was let let's look at elvis through the music and that's been the work that i've done the protest that i took with bruce's stories and with ellis it seemed like a a bigger challenge because it felt like there was a generation that lost the connection to this artist and we came back to hbo and talked about the approaches that we both were discussing which is keep it less about the sensational side of his lifestyle and and try to find the artist and from there i met priscilla in and we were we were off so part of it was just about creating a new connection to presley for today's generation who may not have grown up with him or who may not have developed a preconception or an opinion of him i again and again there's there's many versions of elvis in again again when you talk to people you realize that the the biggest tragedy in the story from the as a filmmaker was that there was a short hand on telling the story that left out things that i connected to as a filmmaker which is race which is america as a place the elvis presley story constantly gets told on just the big moments of sun records or the sullivan show an inbetween that there was all this beauty and and all these influences especially with memphis and that was one of the main reasons i connected with david porter and and also just i've wanted to tear down that that myth that this was a guy who wasn't working musician but got lucky right and again again you you run into those interpretations and mike grace hope as filmmakers that you can watch the film and.

"Amazon's business model of not carrying about profits could be very painful for whole foods competitors enjoy the podcast keep up the great work that's from david porter what are you got the that's an interesting approach your competitor wants to pay too much for arrival business so you offer to pay more i'm not sure that would do be doing kroger any favors and i'm sure they're already and all the markets where whole foods is so i don't think you can as a business i can't defensively by and pay too much for a competitor i don't think that's going to work so i would say no that's albuquerque should have done but i do think that amazon's gonna be very disruptive force in the retail grocery market eventually and i think kroger and the other folks are going to have to accept lower margins an offer better service and that'll be good for of eventually course that'll be good for the country and good for all the consumers but i also think it's going to it's going to be harder than than than that subscriber realizes in and perhaps harder than amazon realizes um to compete with those grocers the these guys like all the and um the other discount grocers they have been gaining share on whole foods because the organic food movement has gone to lower and lower lower down the retail chain so there's nothing allback subsequently more about a grocery store offering organic products so whole foods had been suffering for the last four or five years because they were kind of lost their model was charged more for a ganic food but now you can get organic food at a lower cost a kroger other places.
