"Radio pogo dot com, any Espy nation network. And now your host at you cannot joined by co-hosts, Josh outs and air inside. Hello, everybody. And welcome to Finn. Slattery? Oh, this is joined by errant, son. Joshua this week got inside radio. We're going to talk briefly about the dolphin schedule. Release. We're going to then touch on all of the defensive lineman all the defensive I'm here for hours upon hours or wants to give you a few defensive lineman to keep your eye on the upcoming NFL draft who the dolphins likely have their eyes on both in the first round any possible. Second or third round guy. The dolphins desperately needs some edge rushers. They desperately need to fill up the depth on their defensive line. And this is a great draft for them to do. So all signs points in the for or surround barring any major surprises. Dolphins either. Go defense of liner offensive line on app. Episode of Finsider radio. We talked about the offensive lineman who the dolphins may be targeting in the first round in the mid routes. If you have not listened to that, please be sure to go back in time. And check that out as we name quite a few prospects and all their strengths and weaknesses or they could bring to the Miami Dolphins football team. The NFL draft is just over a week away round one on Thursday, April twenty fifth round two three and four on Friday, April twenty six and the balance of the draft on Saturday, April twenty seventh the dolphins, of course, pick thirteenth overall in the first round, and it is going to be the fourth time in team history. If they have picked thirteenth overall their previous picks at number thirteen nineteen seventy seven AJ, Dewey, the linebacker from LSU nineteen eighty one David Overstreet, the running back from Oklahoma. And of course, just a few years ago. Laremy Tunsil the tackle from sippy? We all. Donald that story. The Miami Dolphins have right now as it stands seven selections one in each round except a six round they have to in the seventh round the dolphins. Are of course, looking to trade back and accumulate those picks both this year and next year. Chris Greer and his press conference on Wednesday morning said that basically he looks at the draft is if he can find three starters out of it. It is success. He essentially said finding three starters is to goal and everything else is gravy, and that will basically be depth and backups along the different positions on the field. So when you look at Chris Greer's drafts over the years, you can see that so far he's pretty much been on track. Although he needs to on more. And I feel like you needs to get maybe, you know, three starters as a perfectly reasonable thing. But then to quality backups or depth pieces that can rotate in there and really make an impact and make that same in. The problem is though some of them have been ofensive, I'm defeat. Lineman guys have not made a huge impact and the overall grand scheme of things can Adolf's find that guy this year time, we'll tell find out in just over a week from now. Before we jump right into the draft and talk about all the different options for the dolphins defensive line. I want to touch on the schedule released that being released today. Eight o'clock PM eastern standard time today being Wednesday as record this, but many schedule links leaks came out through the day. I had a quite a few of them are friend. Travis Wingfield from longtime dolphins had a lot of them as well was able to cover the balance of the remaining games that were open the schedule throughout the day. And of course, all the other beat reporters filling in and so forth, and there's some initial reactions, but we all know at this time of the schedule basically means nothing because injuries happen teams change, the draft changes everything and so forth. So for you out, you know, looking at the dolphin schedule thus far and seeing what you have in terms of what we can expect this coming season where do you see the dolphins fairing? And what do you think maybe the, you know, the roughest part of the schedule es part of the schedule any show. Are there any advantages? They may have what are your initial thoughts? Let's be honest as soon as the season begins. We're gonna pretty damn good idea of what this team is. They opened the season against the ravens and the patriots then on the road against Cowboys. And then the chargers I mean right there are four playoff teams from last season. So we're gonna get a pretty good early indication of what this Miami Dolphins team is this a tough schedule. I mean, you look down the list said if that Browns game, hopefully, we can go to that the three of us. E you know, the eagles every night down there in Miami. And then they have two games back to back at MetLife. It it's just a weird schedule overall. I think if you're hoping for quarterback in twenty twenty you look at the schedule things kind of aligning and you'll Fitzpatrick seeing cake because of that happens with the schedule often pig. Oh three and thirteen and things they're in a really good chance. Dolphins could start the season Owen four heading into their first to that by week week five. There is a really good chance. They can start Owen four no question. And I don't know that. I mean, we knew. If we're going to play certain team on the road or at home. So I don't know that the specific order of the way we're going to do things is going to be that much of a deterrent from what was going to happen anyway, which is you know, looking at a a five win ball club. Let's be honest. The best part about this is for fans like us to look at the schedule and kind of start to decide how res- use those vacation days how we're gonna go to some of these games because I mean, who cares what they have falls on. You know, maybe the players do like you said, maybe whether isn't indication here there but attend today we want to schedule to be released. So we can see those key matchups. So we can see the Ryan Fitzpatrick revenge games. But ultimately, we will know what days we need to take off. So we can go to those games because as fans that's our number one goal. We wanna go to these games. We wanna be rooting our team on. And now the schedule's release. We can start putting into those PTO days. Well, and those you know that MetLife game that we went. To that was what we fifteen. They always. Time. Oh. Just. Game. It was cold. I mean, we dealt with just about any wet weather related thing that you could deal with and I was all pissed off. Because my flight got delayed and stuff like that. And we still had a great time. So you know, Cleveland and late November, you know, that Cleveland has gorgeous. Once you get close to the winter. But I think we could make the most of it for sure. So if we can do that have you guys plan any gains going to get. Well, I, you know, live fifteen minutes twenty minutes from the stadium. Saab definitely go into the November game whether you jerk offs get there or not. But a lot of reading in Cleveland. I wear my sleeve I wear on my sleeve. I remember when that was a derogatory comment and now, you know, the Cleveland Browns are Super Bowl contenders. All of a sudden, but this. Fan side. You shouldn't be no, I I definitely support Cleveland everything as much as I possibly can I wear dolphins gear every other day to work. So people know where my real allegiance lies, but I always like shooting shade at Browns fans and the day that they they made the trade for Oto Beckham junior all these dads or walking around where I work just like they saw boobs for the first time just this amazing grin. I mean, the Browns fans as as awesome as it was have LeBron here and win a championship. Cleveland will be a football town, probably always will be. Listen, you know, me, and I've said it plenty of times I used to think Cleveland was the worst city possible. Because perception, but when I went there with my friends and cousins if years ago, we saw you in met you for the. And I got drunk after one beer. There are two beers. There. Cleveland is. One hell of a city and. People on Twitter earlier, you know, if you're going to a game, they're talking about what kind of games should go to they're looking at Cleveland, and I said absolutely go to Cleveland. I mean, there is so much do in Cleveland. You got all the city right next to each other. Basically you can walk across the street from progressive field where the Indians play to Quicken Loans arena where Cavaliers play goal mild on the road and see where the Browns play a mile or so from there you go to the rock and Roll Hall of fame. Sinoe just to see your casino trash over there. Just a scenery the bars. The restaurants seeing the spicy food. That's over there. All Ye spicy food in Cleveland. Feels like it's just a really nice vibrant city. And if you ever get the chance to go to Cleveland, definitely take that chance and go because it is on. And if college basketball's your thing March madness is going to be here next year. So you're gonna take one of my one of my sons to it one of your twelve sons one of. This call me, Phil riv- bay. I mean Cleveland was so fun that I went back this year with my with my two cousins we stopped in Cleveland for about a day and a half before we went down to the Cincinnati Bengals game. That's just how much love Cleveland. It was just a lot of fun. If you're considering where to go besides Miami, of course. But if you wanted to go on the road and go to a different game. Absolutely do consider Cleveland because you'll have one hell of a time in that city. True brewery too. Steam song did say Cleveland rocks. Right was largely rocks. Rocks or false. If we moved the nation's capital from Washington DC to Cleveland, Ohio the world place, who's the hell is going to move the nation's capital to please onto that. Not get ahead Mayfield Beckham Landry. But come on. You guys won't talk. Some. We're gonna put you on the rest of the night talk about balls. I took a chance all right while balls. All right. Let's jump defensive defensive end part of the draft the dolphins. Like I said have that need to fill on their roster. There overtime over the history of the franchise. The dolphins have made six hundred twenty four total selections in the NFL draft for defensive ends. They have only drafted. I believe it is let's see here ninety nine defensive lineman near most was one hundred thirteen offensive linemen and right after that was defensive back at ninety eight. So the dolphins are no strangers to draft defensive ends in the NFL draft over the course of their history, and they should not be any strangers with this regime as well. It's no secret that when you wanna have sustained success on the defensive side of the football. It's not about sax. It's not about your best core's definitely not about your. Best linebackers. It's about getting pressure on the quarterback. So that's why for me getting that edge rusher is the most important position on the entire defense. And I would say that it is the most important position on the entire football team besides quarterback. And I know if you're out there listening, supposedly I can't say quarterback the right way. But whatever deal with it. Defensive and there is no shortage of talent in issues drafts the dolphins. If they stay put it thirteen. They're going to have their pick of the litter for the defensive linemen, and we're gonna just going to be a few people to to think about a few prospects. Really, maybe take another second look at. I can tell you based on a shortlist that I've heard as far as defensive players go with the dolphins are sitting at thirteen in any of these players are available. They would likely pull the trigger on one of them. I don't know what the order is. I know there's some offense lineman in the mix as well. But I've just been focusing on the defensive guys really and that is the following Brian burns. I know he hasn't been out there in a lot of you know, quote unquote inside reports, but I have heard that name linked to them. I've heard about Montas sweat, and I've heard about Rashawn Gary as well in terms of you know, like I said who they would draft. I have no idea. I don't know where they stand on that. And so forth butts Montas sweats, Brian burns, and Rashawn Gerry or all options for the dolphins at thirteen or so I've been told now you're going to talk about a guy named clean feral. I do not listen my shortlist, but as we had Kevin noble, the owner of the fence sided that com. He mentioned something interesting where he said there's a lot of smoke at first but over time that kind of smoke disappeared. He was wondering out loud. If that's a sign that dolphins. Gotta hold it out leak and nipped in the bud. So people don't realize their true intentions for the NFL draft. What can you tell us about Farrell? Got a chance to see him interview at the combine and you like his background as military parents. So he kinda comes from a strict background, but he has a sense of humor about it. He seems to have a very high football. I q the way he was describing some of Clemson schematics, and what his role was in. That defense just seem like a guy just eats breeze football, and he talk Chris Greer timeout football guys. You have the connection with Marion hobbyists defensive line coach for the dolphins. Now who worked with Clemson there for a few years? So there's some familiarity there. I think he does he's not quite the edge rusher that would be looking for. Okay. So I believe he. Does fit in a five techniques situation. So this is a player that would line on the outside shoulder of the tackle. I believe he could function well in four three defensive end. But I also think he has the flexibility to be an a three defensive line situation. So I think that puts his versatility, you know, by virtue of that kind of puts him at a premium with what the dolphins will be looking for because think about where we stand with a defensive line. Okay. We have devan God, Sean. We have visitor who will likely be. Playing one techniques and and three techniques. So were looking at guys replying, nose tackle. But also playing like traditional four three defensive tackle. But then when you look at the defensive in group Charles Harris, we saw something about him getting linebacker rep. So that tells me that they want him coming off the edge. And that makes sense to me. He's not a which is where he should have been all along. Right. So he's not the five technique that we're looking for. So who are we going to play on the defensive line when we bring three defensive linemen in because we will undoubtedly see that defensive formation. You're gonna see five defensive backs almost every single snap. So where the variation is. Are you gonna play three defensive lineman or four defensive linemen? And I think in either situation you can see Cleland feral fitting in there somewhere. And I think he's too good against the run. And he's too good with his hands to not be able to play a five technique. So I think because of his versatility because of his background, and I will admit that he has he's a higher floor lower ceiling kind of guy, but I think a safe pick and the building stages of something like what we're going through. Here we need to check some boxes we need to get some kind of consistent production. We can't expect to just knock it out of the park every single time. We're going to have to mitigate some risk. And I think Cleland feral does give us enough. And some of these guys that we end up projecting as high floor low ceiling end up doing a little bit better than we expect. But I think he would serve such huge role and what the dolphins need, right. This minute. And I think the dolphins are very high on Farrell. I just think he'd be a trade down candidate. I mentioned the guys who I think will be there thirteen the dolphins will pull the trigger. I didn't mention Oliver. Because also another one the dogs will pull the trigger on just don't always going to last that long. But fails definitely play just as a guy who would be a trade down candidate. If they don't wanna stay thirteen. I'm gonna jump over to Montas sweat. And this is a guy who the dolphins would select there. I believe I firmly believe if he was there a thirteen the dolphins would not look to trae down. Let's say thought they could still get him. A few picks later sweat coming from Mississippi State, redshirt senior twenty two almost twenty three years old to be twenty three when the season begins in September actually born on September fourth day before me today's after my son a lot of birthdays tend to be one of the greatest people on this planet. So if you were born September, you're right there with myself, Montas, sweat, and my child my son Montas sweat was three start. Ironically, enough three star tight ends coming out of high school. He will was. Stint on football and basketball. He ever twelve point three points game in eight point one rebounds. As a senior for basketball and also received college basketball offers on the football field, though. He was he was better tight end. And sometimes play both ways on his high school team who had rushed a passer as well. It was actually considered a top sixty tight end recruit in the country committed to Vanderbilt before going over to Michigan state. And then that's where the Spartans moved him to defense fulltime. However, there are some red flags here because swept played in two games. In twenty fourteen. Took a redshirt year was a spending most of twenty fifteen for violation of team rules left the program the next year. He also left for personal reasons after one season at the co level. He was highly sought after again and committed to Mississippi State over LSU and Texas aunt em now, sweat somebody will say that one of his strengths. He has the light footed nece out of stance long strides, which are obviously important as defensive end to get to the quarterback as fast as possible. What is also good about sweats has good one awareness and play identification? And basically if you're a defensive end, you cannot set the edge. You're kinda useless on all three downs. And we saw that with Cameron wake towards the end of his career here in Miami. Where he wasn't able to set the edge as a festively would get washed out of run place. And when that happens, you're really only good in obvious passing situations and on third down sweat is three down player played in the SEC. So obviously knows great competition. Probably needs to add on a little weight as he gets into the NFL doesn't have the greatest Benz is a little stiff coming out of a stance and just kind of really play his size and a little bigger than that. The problem is sometimes you over pursues the play over totally with Greer in the patriots Parcells philosophy of getting guys who were you know, three or four year starters and who have proven success throughout their college career. However his. Intangibles and his stats are kind of the charts here since the started twenty seventeen is twenty two section the second. Most by any power five F B S player during that span guy in front of him. Josh Allen was expected to go in the top five or ten he formed the dominant defensive line dual Jeffrey Simmons who tore his ACL. Now that could be a target too for the dolphins. We're not talking about Simmons tonight's, but he is someone the dolphins can possibly rely on towards the end of this year and then going into twenty twenty four sure sweat can play in both three four and a four three which is highly important with Brian floors in his scheme that he wants to implement here. And he is a definite option for the dolphins. I know he's a little polarizing topic here. But if the dolphins come with monta sweats, depending on who else is on the board. But in a nutshell, I would not be disappointed if that was their pick, and you mentioned Jeffrey Simmons. I mean, he might be the best player on the Mississippi defense. I mean, we're gonna see where he ends up. You know it. Could be a similar situation with Cowboys did a few years ago with Jalen Samuels Sar Jalen Smith, they they got the linebacker there. They invested a year known. They was hurt and he turned into be one of the best linebackers in the NFL last season. So it's worth the risk, especially if you're team that's tanking. But for me, I mean, I feel like Chris Greer, you know, I know you won't get this reference cannot Sutton light. But he almost has at brand stark thing to him, you know, he kinda foresaw that Charles hairs was eventually going to get that chance as outside linebacker because why else would have no idea who brand stark is that that's all. These three eyed raven that should clear things up for you. Matthew shame. When you aim of thrones crap I'm done here. Shame on you. But but I find pass rusher. I wanna talk about in Canada, you need to watch your attorney the pass round and talk about as Brian burns. And I know people have issues with his size. He six five hundred four nine pounds. You know, he's a little bit lanky. But what the guy did to comment a four point five three forty. You know, the vertical jump thirty six inches hundred twenty nine broad jump three cone seven point zero one heat completely destroyed. The combine when he turned on the tape. You see a guy compla- all over that defensive line. You can move around drop back in coverage hand in the dirt standing up perfect outside linebacker a pass rusher at had great success last year. It was his best season the fine, folks. Over pro football, focus, given eighty six point seven grade. Ten quarterback hits eight secs forty-eight hurries. I mean this guy was naps loot menace last season for me. Brian Burns's, acai a no lot of people haven't been talking about him being mocked to the Miami Dolphins. I don't even know if the Miami Dolphins visited with them to be completely honest. But I see a guy that's elite player that may fall the top ten for one reason or the next, but I think the ads that frame at the next level the mind dolphin have a pass rusher that they can rely on for many many years. He is my number one target of their thirteen Cleveland feral. I think he fits all his boxes. You know? We might not be the sexy pass rush pick. But with that guy can do in the run game. You know, he's a very very good player that can do a lot of things very very good. You know, I kinda almost see a younger version of William as you know, a guy can have those heavy and run game. You know, you can get to the quarterback. You can do all the little things. I like goddess that Mary what's that? I like that compares. Yeah. And you gotta love that hobby. You know, the. You see that they had that time together. You gotta see the fit there for me, though. I mean, if the dolphins get any of these guys, I'm like cannot icy quarterback is the number one need after that pass rusher is right now, you got Charles Harris. And after that you got Charles hairs. Okay. But here's something that I've seen in. I'm almost syncing that the group think right now is to get an offense of linemen in the first round and the get defensive line in the second round. So with that being said because it is certainly possible offensive lineman kind of artificially get push up the board because there's fewer good ones, and there is pretty solid depth for this defensive line group. So let's think about guys that may be say, we do go a Jona Williams or a Cody Ford or gear bradberry, or you know, we trade down and get someone like Chris Lindstrom. I'm looking out and I'll stick with Chris Lindstrom. I just kind of accidentally said that. But it leads me right into the defensive end for them. And that's our and I is mentioned five tech technique earlier. And I think Zack Allen is the type who can play to gap system so control both of being a c- gap and have the strength and the versatility Nike to be able to to do this thing. So I really like him in a late around. He probably what I've seen is a proposed as a third round draft pick kinda objectively, but you also have to take into account what certain teams are trying to do. So were these values that people have are all relative, depending on what prison you're looking through what type of game. Are you going for you might value? Another team's fifth round draft pick as I might value that as a second round draft pick because that's exactly. The type of niche that I'm looking for. So don't ignore the fact that once we get into day to day three that teams are looking to fill niches and for me Zack Allan fits a very important inch. Because a we have a crisis of quantity at defensive end. We don't we don't have the guy to even field a good defensive line right now. So we we have to be able to address those things, but he also brings a type of versatility that that doesn't pigeonhole other players. So he's agai legs Allen coming in who is incredibly strong, very good with his hands. And you like the I q he knows how to play football. And he's just he's he's one of those guys and you try to not pigeonhole certain players. He's in high effort guy, and you're gonna get everything out of him every snap. And he's the type of player who. Is going to affect locker room in a positive way. If it's not Zack Allen another guy. They may fit the mold for the dolphins is bend Minogue. Ooh. From teeth to you. And he had a top thirty visit with the dolphins. I believe it was last week from what I understand the dolphins like a lot from what I also understand a lot of other teams like him just as much. I'm sorry. That's being a Gook not. But no band Banu. Bandhu? Originally projected to go on the fourth and fifth round could go as the second or third, and I think he might be rich for the dolphins in the mid seconds is a trade down candidate in the second. I don't think you'll be there for the dolphins in the mid stirred when they pick again. Bana goo was a to start -fensive recruit out of high school board of Nigeria actually moved to the United States along with his family when he was just six months old. So really didn't know Nigeria growing up six months old. You're not going to remember anything and he actually played quarterback much of his life until his sophomore year of high school. He actually played with Davis Webb and Davis Webb transferred to another school and being a took over band who got her is junior broken leg. A posted a ten point five sacks. As a senior also playing as their earned third team. All state honors also played basketball and ran track at his high school and won several honors there went under recruited as the number four seventy two player in the twenty fourteen recruiting class and red shirted in twenty fourteen after signing with Louisiana Monroe and that had a breakout freshman campaign in twenty fifteen which then prompted interest from TCU. Obviously joined TCU and played every game. The last two years for TCU and participated in this year's senior bowl. Some good things about manigault some strengths loose body. Loose lower body, which is important for flexibility and bending and turning around the corner. You're not gonna have any trouble with his speed. He can track down the runner the receiver whoever it might be on the field. He is going to close that gap and get to that player, or at least close the gap enough for someone else to catch up to that player. He is you know, when they say Cameron wake to care of his body. Like, you couldn't imagine as well. Some people say about manigault as well that he just takes tremendous serve his body and extremely ripped very tone with muscle thinking sorry to interrupt you there. But I think he had like the best broad Trump ever something like that for defensive lineman at the combine them I'm gonna look that up right now since I was there, but his broad jump was eleven feet two inches. So we're talking about a world class athlete right now that was the -fensive line offensive lineman record. And I talked to somebody who knows him very well and TCU didn't use him in a way that they TCU kinda likes the plug and play players. So they they want robots. They want guys come in and do play specific role and do what they're told in. And do that. And I think this is kind of the first time in his life. Where his like, hey, I'm a world class athlete. Maybe I can do some other things. So. This this. This might be a guy where you know. He's got a high ceiling. Yeah. I mean, he obviously has some weaknesses. What player doesn't have a weakness? Unless you're the number one overall picker whatever a meeting to get some more power. Absolutely. He needs to get some more flexibility in his hips, while here's a loose lower body, some tightness in his hips, and he just needs to learn how to really stop to cross the line and get through the gaps and finish off the play. He's not going to probably be a three down player from the very first days going to be more there in passing situations, obviously obvious passing downs and can move over the line as well and possibly to linebacker spots there again the dolphins do like him. They want multiple positions across end in the linebacker area. Whether or not the dolphins will get a chance to draft remains to be seen. But the interest is real there. Now, I know you have a guy who you like a lot. And this guy will probably go before the second round, maybe not before the second round. But definitely by the end of the second round. I don't think you'll be there for the middle of Miami's pick there in the second round bub trainer. Things have happened. Who do you got for us at you're going to talk about next? I just wanna tell Trinite, and I think it is the right way to go about things away. Something said, you know, offense of line as sexy is that pick is not that's kind of the way this team should lean in the first round barring that elite player falls in the latte. Because when you look at this two thousand nineteen class the defensive defensive line position is just stacked with talent. We see these Ed rushers we see the talent in the middle. This draft is loaded. So the dolphins go out there. Then get a starter immediately on the offense of line comeback around in round two and get a very good pass rusher. We're talking about these guys disaster. The bang bang knows. You know, you got these guys I'm gonna talk about chase win bitch. And we know that Stephen Ross is Michigan, man. We know that is one true love chase. When vich plays like hair's on fire. I mean, it's guy who he ran a four point five nine forty thirty point five vertical jump hundred sixteen inch broad jump. I mean, the guy just plays like again like his hair is on fire is all over the field. He's got. Kiko alonzo. You know, not so much in coverage because Kiko Alonzo is terrible in coverage, but you know, Kiko Alonzo can make those plays. He runs around from silent assign line. Chase win vich. I might say a more refined Kiko Alonzo. You know, what he did last year? PF has as the number two edge edge defender against a run. I mean, the Miami Dolphins have been tro shis against a run. So he brings that to the table. He's at twenty one sacks over his four year career, Michigan thirty six Huby hits eighty hurries. I mean, the guy can do it all so for me. If if you're not getting a guy in round one, you're definitely not relying on trolls Harris and drawn Elliott next year. So you need to bring a pass rusher. And I got chased one of each like cannot said he might not be there when the dolphins picking round too. But if you trade back, you accumulate another early second round pick, you know, that's when the target like a win of could become available again. The Michigan ties can do everything I think he'd be very very. Fit for Brian floors in his defense quick story about one of it from the combine he was the only person that I saw interviewed that got testy with an with somebody who asked a question and basically. He was asked. You know about being a try hard guy and that wasn't a question. But that was kind of what was hinted at with the way the question was asked. And so he opens it up, and he says, you know, I kind of feel like teed me up with this question. But it's a very fine line to the walking being a try hard white guy. And then the reporter say all, you know, it's not what what I really meant like. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I got you. But. Proceed with his answer. And I kinda liked it to be honest with you. I don't want to see I don't wanna see. You know, pre-prepared answers for all these things, and I don't wanna see a bunch of dudes this shaking each other's hands. And haven't fake smiles. And all this kind of stuff. Let's just let's talk, you know. So I'm kinda glad that I saw that little bit of a almost resentment towards the thought that the only reason that he was where he was at was because he tried really hard and house. You mentioned he's he's got solid measurable 's. Okay. It's not like, the guy's not an athlete. He's got production. He played at a major program. So there's a lot of guys who like him, and I could even see him crawling into the end of round one for somebody. Because I think he brings you know, the overriding theme, despite the fact that I heard him not snap. But just you know, just get a little bit. Like, hey, you know enough is enough. But. But the overwhelming feeling that I got was, hey, he just wants to come to a club and contribute. He wants to make it better than what he arrived with. And I think that just speaks volumes chase. And I think he's going to be a great football player. No matter where he goes. You know, what other guy from Michigan that I really want to touch on before you Trump into linebacker. So I was you guys are touch on that quick before we wrap up the show is Sean Gary, and he's going to be an option there for the dolphins at thirteen if they stayed over Sean gearing absolute freak and athletic freak and people think that he could be one of the better players that comes out of the strapped only going to be twenty one when the season begins in the twenty six recruiting class. Listen to this Gary was not only ranked as the number one player in the state and the number one player in the country. Also, the number one ranked recru- all time, according to forty seven composite ratings. This was since the year two offers from Alabama Auburn USC Clemson chose Michigan over Clemson. And. The guy is just. Gifted is very gifted for his size flashes, explosive quickness light feet when you look at this guy. You know, it's it's everything that you want in edge rusher. Yes. Weaknesses needs to get better at rushing the passionate to get better with his moves needs to understand the different techniques there. He's young so concerned. Are they're about as maturity, and whether or not I can handle the NFL and everything that comes with debts. There are some red flags with his injuries suffered some as I seems that Michigan injured his right shoulder prior to twenty team did try to play through it. You miss three games. They're essentially a two year starter. Michigan played with the hand on the ground. Sometimes jump into the middle of the lion. Played over the tackle spot there. But again, his talent is phenomenal. Now. When you look at Gerry, it's also that high risk factor that boomer bus factor because he has that rare athletic talent, but his development wasn't fully there. There's eight pass rushers in this coming draft class that had more sacks twenty teen and Gary Addidas tire career at ten point five. But again as son kind of Luca to with and manigault sometimes it's all about skiing and the ski Mitch do in the role that Jurassic play so yesterday questions about his sack total and some people compare him to Charlton's or Jordan where that potential is there, but it can never been fully unleashed. So that's gonna be a situation. Dolphins have talked through and our spinal drawers, they haven't already and we'll see where Gary falls on that ladder. I know as counterintuitive is is to to think, you know, when you look at the dolphins landscape, and where the holes are on a across the team. You can't. It's you almost have to go conservative. I know. I know you think like, oh, what do we have to lose? We're going to get the first pick next year. And you know, we have holes everywhere. Let's shoot for the fences. I disagree. I think this is where you have to start building your army. I mean, this is you need to get some reliable guys that are going to be with your organization for a few years, and that some guys that you can count on. So that's why I and this particular drafts I'm looking at more high flora guys, and I'm looking a little bit more conservatively as a decision maker. And then when I'm looking at my draft capital for two thousand twenty and I see what I have so far, and hopefully I'm able to add to that either throughout the season or in this draft, then you can get a little bit more aggressive because you have more room for air. You have more picks to mitigate the potential losses that you make. But with all that being said why? Just throw something a house real quick about the linebacker position. Because you know, the way I see it. Just kind of falls flat in a certain way in terms of positions of need for the dolphins. Irs just I wanted nor the fact that it's not perfect. But there are certainly other positions and more disarray than the linebacker, and it happens to fit where I think where linebacker value is in the draft, and that's going to be late day to day. Three a guy that I'm looking at somewhere day three would be TJ Edwards from Wisconsin. He is the two down run thumper that you're traditionally looking for in a patriots type of inside linebacker. So I think he's just a big duties from the big ten, and they one of the few college conferences that still value running the football and playing style defense and just assault program all around they're going to they're going to be. Smart guys, and they might be a little bit limited athletically, but from what I saw from the the patriots scheme with the inside linebackers. They they do kinda value the thumpers they value the big dudes because that enables them to play three defensive linemen, and they can control the line of scrimmage with bigger dudes that are able to control the big apps, and then they're able to with five defensive backs out there. They're able to control the passing game a little bit easier. So I would look for them to look at somebody like TJ Edwards and the late rounds just as specific niche player, and that's kind of what you're looking for late in the draft. Can we can we fit niche with some guy? Yeah. And you're absolutely right. And I just wanna touch on Sean Gary a little bit. I mean, if someone said here in asked me today who I think the Miami Dolphins could draft their thirteen. I definitely think I put him under Sean, Gary just because you know, talent like that falls out of top ten team like the Miami Dolphins who have Stephen Ross again as Michigan ties. He has the inside information. I believe showing Gary's one the highest recruits in Michigan history in they weren't raving about this guy. He never quite put it all together. But with the right coaching. I think he could be an elite talent I think at thirteen very much in play. Stick into the Michigan ties for me. I think the linebacker position is pretty good. I love Racal McMillan, what your own Baker is rookie was impressive as hell. Kiko. Alonzo is good against a run. Not so good in the passing game. I think eventually is gonna get trained to be a cap casualty for me. They're like said there's a lot of day to town law day three town, but for me, and I know there's so many other needs. But if you're going to if you look at New England's defense, you know sunset. Unia thumper. You guy come down. There do that Dante tower type for we know blitz the quarterback do everything asked of him. And I think if you're looking for a player like that in this year's class. If you don't think, you know, maybe recalling Milliken maybe drone Baker. I think it got like Devon Bush. And I mean, I know they're two world-class linebackers in this draft. You know, it's Devon white in Stephan Bush, and I think if if white goes earlier, I think that's kind of the number one guy think he might go to Tampa. But if you need a guy that's going to just come right in and be honestly prior best linebacker. That's Devon Bush. I think he did Michigan's been productive for years. He's just a worldly talent. And again Eakin bullets a quarterback do all those small things that Brian Flora's linebacker would be asked to do. I don't think that's the route the Miami Dolphins will go. I think they'll stick to you know, the offense the trenches the offense defensive lines there around wanted to. But if you're going linebacker for me, I think you would have to shoot for the stars. And yet the one of those top two towns. I think what a girly Devin Bush should be that guy. They're saying Devin Bush might be the best linebacker the entire NFL draft as you kind of lewd it through there. We'll see and he plays with chip on his shoulder to from what I saw from his interview at the combine the very first question that I asked him was. Hey, do you think your size concerns are overblown? He's like Chia, and he had he had no problem talking a minute or two about that. It's going to be interesting to see where he lands up. People are some people are saying top ten somebody who are saying about Packers range twelve through fifteen. Some are saying lowest twenty you never know what the NFL draft all takes really wants a prize. Or if you dominoes start falling a few runs here, and there and people start panicking, and then crazy stuff happens. And that's the beauty of the NFL draft. You could seal his mock drafts to come out and the purpose of mantras. We've talked before is not to nail the accuracy of who's going where and when they're going to really kinda tell you about what they're hearing around the league. And you connect. If you read enough mock drafts from the credible people you can start to connect the dots a little bit and see where a team might be leaning towards in terms of player and physician you've seen a wide array for the dolphins using quarterback Wayne Haskins dolphins you even seen for that came up about him before looks like is now going to go top five not number one. Overall, you seen guys like join a Williams going to the dolphins you seen guys like Brian burns. Rashawn Gary go to the dolphins. Stieg see the three majors positions their defensive line offense aligned quarterback. No, one knows what they're going to do going to be very interesting with the first younger floors and Greer and a whole new front office, basically the top there. You got Marvin Allen reg MacKenzie. It's going to be fascinated to see this watch see this draft unfold, and how they maneuver the board to try to get more picks throughout the drought because volume is everything and the NFL draft had no one is ever perfect. Not even the best general manager in the history of the league perfect. So it's going to be very fun to watch and see how they approach it. And what their strategy is any last thoughts before rep show. To speak to your earlier point. What you guys think about Bill Polian, and Charley Casserly now. Because at one point. They were thought of as draft genius. Reason why they're not in the NFL anymore. And that's that's my whole point Bill Polian. Got very lucky. That there's any other way to describe it. And that's not a slight you have to be, you know, it's one of those you have to be luckier than good sort of things when general manager of an NFL football team because of venture really you're going to be fired for not doing not getting the talent that you need to to get on your team. That's just the way they are chrome os, man. Eventually these guys are gonna trip up and they're going to be out of job. But how do I feel about either those guys? I mean, I'm no expert, but I think those guys are joke right now, you know, so just take this this whole process, man. It's just a love talking about these players are going to check the entire way the NFL Volve. But at the same time the way it all transpires in which players become good in which teams are the benefactors of those players becoming good as crap shoot, bro. My paying. Yeah. Yeah. Every single year. It's the same thing. It's a crap shoot you get lucky you get unlucky this. And that you don't know how players want to react when they get to the big stage lights come on. 435: Boomer Esiason Has Zero Respect for the CFL; The Many Laughs Jim Shared with John Muckler

Gm john mcclure who passed away this week at the age of eighty six. We'll also get into boomer esiason's disks of the canadian football league. How dare you and selling off the names of the four. Nhl divisions is anything really not for sale or. Let's get at it without further delay. James or things man. I'm johnny rodgers. Spent johnny roger montreal nine hundred seventy s quarterback or running back. That's it got the ordinary superstar. Cfl days watching johnny rodgers. I love. I can show you my. Montreal alouette jersey. Which by the way was the best alouette jersey of all time while they ever got away from them. I don't know but yeah. There's a big fan to peter de la riva. Bolivia cough he might have played for. Montreal is the blade. Abc's part of that nfl invasion scout mania on the alouette. Instead i'm going to make a real splash year. Sa- broadened quarterback vince ferragamo. David overstreet fine player kuzin. Oh a bunch of guys from the national football league but as it was where the edmonton oilers scalp time as a cfl owner was also short. Lived right. I was a hamilton tiger. Cats fan steve growing up The cfl never had a team sudbury steve. No no they say. Although by today's standards you know like a year or two ago. I think it's gone for shit now right though there was going to be the Schooners the halifax going to expand member to the atlantic. Schooners are still in the works. Oh it is okay. So i'm assuming they would play in halifax it's the biggest city in the maritimes. So he could get a franchise hundred and fifty thousand people my hometown anyway so i was a hamilton tiger. Cats fan big big fat tommy. Joe coffey stevie. My bringing back. Tommy joe coffey garni hanley garni hanley zueger joe zuniga and That's funny you. Say that. Because i have a job zuber story. I decide for halloween steve. Because i didn't let my mother's pick the outfits anymore. Because she used to send me out as a brownie right. She would would forget to get me a costume. And so i went out and my sister's brownie outfit a couple of years in a row. Okay how. I let her do it more than one year in a row. I don't know because i got absolutely tormented home. All my buddies are dressed up like hockey players and and frigging monsters and wrestlers and everything and then we'd all meet you trigger tree. Then i'd show up but the little town and the skirt and the and the chocolate brown Leotards stevie okay. That was my outfit. So i decided i'm going to do my own outfit my own costume and i went out as joe zueger. Okay for all the we. Yeah just up ahead. A little football helmet the shoulder pads. I think he's my hockey shoulder. Pads and i bet you didn't try to bet you didn't feel nearly as pretty though no i didn't feel nearly as pretty no i did. Yeah it was man kind of miss the brownie outfit. Tokay i get my helmet. And i get some gold nail polish. Okay i think from my mom or of somewhere. And i put joe zueger on the helmets. Stevie with his number and off i go. My mom had no idea who josie girls and off. I go in the first the first house i go to stevie okay trick or treat and you know the parents like oh look at. You can't in here. Let's have a look at those costumes. Everyone knew it everybody on the street. Come on in here. Oh isn't not great and and a guy looks at me ingles. Who's joe sugar. I go backwards. Yeah i wrote the s sergio sugar and it's not joe sugar. You any ends joe zueger. Oh thought you're a fan. You're not just buried lease tv just buried me you know said you're you're a lot better last year in the brownie outfit so you would have to spelling errors there because you know it's still only would be zoo gar. I assigned zueger with an e at the end. Not the way. I should've i should've gone him. Smith would have been a lot of your nats anyway. The old see of dfl stuff and the nfl's in a little bit of hot water or not not the fell. You sent me a little clip here. I would say. They're in hot water from the kobe perspective. I was reading today here in ottawa. Where i am that by the start of july more than half the city just based on projections as they stand right now because this is always evolving but the city put out a note saying that six hundred eighty thousand auto autobahns could have the vaccine. The start of july so. That's a very good thing. When i talk about covert and the cfl i mean until they get fans back in the stadium. The cfl's future is in full on limbo. So yes the cfl's water. That the note. I sent you though is about an nfl story and bouma size is quite a famous Former nfl player and nfl analyst in the midst of the arizona cardinals game the other day. Where matt struggler is a backup. Backup quarterback will ease in the game for arizona and man boomer assize and took a really hard run and didn't really mince words about it struggled through a really bad ball. And here's what a size and had to say after what was a pretty terrible throw as he is getting hit in the pocket. you know. this isn't the great cup. This isn't the cfl. You can't just take chances and pull the ball down the field and expect somebody to come down with it so there is boomer esiason tony. Romo's back by the way just taking down straggler And talking about the nfl and our championship game is though players. Don't up here. And quarterbacks blindly willy nilly throw the ball wherever they want have success. And that's just that's just ignorance stock and right there and and it really demeans straggler as a player as well for Demeans his accomplishment because is the defending grey cup champion and his size and with all the super bowls that he did not win. Tries to play that accomplishment down like a grey cup ring is somehow worthless in his mind. Hers isn't agree curb. Dna affair will be shut up anyway. I'm not losing any sleep over it. But it was a pretty ignorant to say maya sizing. Well it's it's not the end of the world right. It's not the end of the world but for sure the guy wants to take back for sure. The guy wants to take back because you know you know fans are fans men fanatics right there fanatic about about whatever they're cheering for and see a fell fans are die hard fans and That sort of predictable that that would happen right if you shop on the cf l. Okay particularly steve. If you're an american who's involved in the nfl. You're going to get drilled drill by elfin. i. I don't think it's a fireable offense or anything. No i i think it's kind of funny But y'all don't don't be you know i've been. I've been relatively outspoken. That the should go to. Nfl rules and up you know. Don't change the league. We're not gonna we're not gonna get an nfl franchise up here. But i really think they. Should you know and i think it'll it result in a bunch more talent playing the nfl. It'll you get the odd guy rate. I guess the last guy to come in and got got walloped. Was johnny manziel right. Who won't be a big star but yeah boomer probably wants boomer will be will be submitting apology post. I'm sure somewhere if he hasn't already some feedback that he got from the comments via twitter would be former bbc. Line quarterback travis lulei. He tweeted out a boomer. Knows that throwing a ball blindly down the middle. That doesn't work in the cfl either. He knows that right. It also boomer boomer knows he's only calling this game because the starter is out to right. Okay now i'm done. He says right. Also randy chevy from calgary stampede. It didn't hold back yes. This is a cfl outrage tweet. But his size and is talking cfl. Quarterbacks are a bunch of blathering idiots. The chuck the ball up when there's no options of seen that play a million times by bad and established quarterbacks maybe offer a little intelligence to your so there's some of the feedback from some guys who played in the nfl. Let's let's back up one day. Okay boomer let's back up one day and go to the eagles game. Okay and go to saad felt okay. Let's let's let's talk about that quarterback right you wanna uk. That guy wouldn't make a high school team in canada. Okay i mean just you know you might want to look right in your own backyard there boomer before you start shopping on cfl. I love both games. Sella both leagues. I think both leagues are great. I just And i'm not losing any sleep over it. I think Boomer assize doesn himself a disservice to the canadian fans who love the nfl. And the cfl. Like i do. He loses some respect in some people's eyes but At the end of the day. I fully believe that if you're to pull most nfl fans. I bet that not many of them. In america that is not many of them had any kind of an issue with boomer size and using the cfl as some sort of model of incompetent quarterbacking. I don't think most of the Most of his audience cares one way or the other. I'll tell you what stevie before he leaves the topic. It does tell you that the image. Okay what the images of the afl you know. Outside of canada okay And it would only be in the states. You know people in europe. I don't think probably the cfl or or anything. But you know the for this guy to say that off the cuff. It gives you an idea of what the cfl's up against you know for for a broadcaster to go to that card right away. Imagine you're getting an edited version there by the way to steve okay. Because he's live. Imagine what they really think you know so you know. It's tough on the cfl. It's really tough on them. Trying to pitch their game and kinda. Give us a break you know. Give us a break boomer. Okay we we understand. You think it's a less game your lot. Yada yada yada the wide field the the end zones being twenty deep and all that stuff But you had a chance once in a while we'd love for you guys to mention the cfl okay when you do player profiles and talk about the great cup on the day so when you get a chance to talk about the cfl picked to say you know give us a break man. Gimme gimme gimme a break. That's a hijab. Ignorance is what it is and In my mind as far as american football players go we put them into camps. The camp of i've never played in the nfl. And i don't really know anything about it or i have played in the nfl. And i have nothing but respect for it like the thousands of american football players who played in the cfl over the years. I don't think there's a one of them would go and say yup. It was a joke. It was just a joke across the board. It was easy. I could do anything i wanted. I could throw the ball. Willy nilly carrot. It was crazy and it was so easy. I won the mvp every year. No single american football player who comes up to canada to play pro ball. They leave with great admiration for the talent level. That's there no. It's not the nfl's talent level. Obviously but there are a hell of a lot of really really good football players in north america. And just because they're not in the. Nfl doesn't mean that they can't play some quality. Sure look guys who had real big success in the nfl in our in our generation and they will. They will do exactly what you said. The credit fell. Think of warren moon. joe theismann. Who played there. Doug flutie right Who had great careers breakers and the cfl and warren moon carson and thousand went on to great great careers. You know and all of them will give credit to the nfl so kempton pissed with boomer. No i started off. Not so pit non pissed with him. Yeah screw you boomer okay. Let's take a time out of the program when we come back on the show. Want pick your brain james about a sad tale Sabbath news yesterday from the nhl. He came in as a coach. You know one of the coaches right and we'd have laugh He'd he'd he'd say i you know listen it used to listen to the show stevie and he'd make me tell stories that he had heard before while we're sitting at the bar and He was just great and what he did to me. I'm amazed we're able to find such a clean version high quality. What is that underwater and gives you a sense of it anyway. I can't believe john muckler trag over to dominate hot chick to do the impression so school district. Yeah of course she would be and the shit. I sayd people. When i've been on stage with a mic and all that but that one just do it jimmy like two feet in front of the guy. Okay dominic i bubble bobble merely mockery out buffalo to crotch member. Id used to the thing about the had. The groin double grind intrigue or something. The doctor the doctor. Yeah exactly example. Abduct good guy score guy. I'm gonna skiavo bubba anyway. He is bar none bar none the nicest most genuine guy i ever knew in the in the nhl in the nfl a higher up guy you know he got nothing but great things to say about great things good drinker. Good gregory loved. You love to have through to. Your powell wayne gretzky. Great things to say as well in a statement he said when you have twenty two pretty good hockey players have enjoyed some success. It's hard to imagine the addition of an assistant coach would be the final piece to get in the edmonton oilers to the top of the mountain. But that's exactly what happened. When john joined the team he took my career to another level and It sounds like he had almost a hockey father relationship with john. Mcclure and i don't get a chance to talk to wayne about it yet. I haven't yet. I haven't but when i've done hundreds of events for them over the years and i got in the habit of checking with them before i jump on their big because my stick steve is ripping guys left and right and so i you know i ripped on a couple of guys one time in a event and he pulled me aside after go layoff. That guy. don't do don't do that for whatever reason right. 'cause you never questioned right cream is great one right and so i got in the habit before i did any of his events of going up and say okay. Here's here's going to chop cool and and you know it was always you know excuse the pun but ninety nine percent of the time it was fine and and Muckler used to come up to me at those events and go jimmy. Lay it on me. Okay gimme the business. Okay you go hard you go hard. I'm your guy you know anyway. Yeah i haven't talked about it but but that stuff's true you know you talked to any of those others who had a bunch of success in those days and that guy's name is right in there with with slats and Teddy green and all the other guys you know. Those are the main guy when they win those cup so yeah most of our listeners. you know. They would remember from his days mostly. I shouldn't say that. I mean everybody's a hockey fan and they knew muckler's presence in that dynasty out and edmonton but of course he became the ottawa. Gm as you talked about and there were some real curiosities like you think about Dino thing muckler was the gm when today. No charro was toying with free agency and muckler's also the guy that signed at marian hossa to a long term contract and traded in within twenty four hours of that signing to bring in danny heatley so there was a little bit of controversy there but everybody loves heatley at the time so guy came in at a couple of fifty goal seasons but there was a lot of controversy because he had just been involved in that car accident. That killed teammate. Dan snyder down at atlanta and he never played another game for the thrashes. I don't think. And then the sends acquired him for marion hosa so that was an interesting angle to things from there. Not only is gone. But sedano chara as i've heard from From people deepen the organization that Chara was basically offered contract and he said you know what. Put it with all the others. And i'll let you know. And the word was that he was offended. By the way his countrymen and friend marian hossa was treated by montclair in the contract negotiations but muckler like heatley allot and so onward and upward. And you'd wonder if eugene melnyk who was in his early days as the owner maybe had some kind of hand in that saying you signed hosted to a what so. He may have had an issue with the finances all very a lot of intrigue to that whole thing but at the end of the day at heatley because we just had the lockout we wiped out an entire season in oh four zero five and then coming into the lockout. You not only had danny heated. Look forward to if you're a sense fan brought in by muckler but you also had dominik hasek at the same time. Hasha can heatley That had everybody energized and That season didn't go very well because of the injury like you talked about with harshek the following season however they went to the stanley cup final and they loss of course to anaheim that year. But i can't remember general manager taking his team to the stanley cup. Final as muckler did as as a manager and then get fired within a few weeks of that performance. It was it was. I would love to know about the intrigue of that as well. Because there was almost a power struggle with roy moore lacquer the president of the club and the gm and john mcclure who are longtime fans longtime strengths. And roy malacca big listen to the show by the way There was almost a power struggle there with that. Duo and cyril leader and brian murray. Because murray was a coach muckler brought him in and then not that long after murray took over for him as the general manager of the club. Leader took over for malacca as the president. So there i don. I don't know the story line behind all of it. But it was like a big old soap opera and it would have been cool to be a fly on the wall during those days. Gotta get malacca on salvin idea. Maybe maybe willing to tell some tales. Tell some tales. Yeah you know the one thing. I do remember about john. Lewis came to hockey. And you always asked me about these hockey guys. Steve i anything i know about has nothing to do with hockey waiting for you to tell all the life stories. I'd sort of fill in the hockey blanks after. But one thing i do. I do remember this distinctly. I remember this distinctively. I remember this when we were doing the morning. Show and i loved it. I loved macos response. You know one of the biggest frustrations for coaches and players and general managers and presidents of club and owners is how to handle the fans right how how to how to respond to the fans when they get on something okay wins losses trades or whatever right and it's a really. It's a really tough situation right. Steve because you know the the fans who are calling for someone to be traded and the guy. They don't know what they're talking about. And it's a stupid trade and you know they they always get. I listen to talk shows after right in the goggle they gotta get rid of that guy. They got to get rid of them they go. Why did you what he did tonight. You know and then the whole straight. They'll say okay. Well who should we get for him and shuts it down right shuts the fan down. So it's kinda like okay. Shut up you don't know what you're talking about right and so it's a real frustration. Because they're the they're the viewer there. The ticket buyer right. So how do you handle dumb comments from fans and and yet and yet a peaceful right and and every city has gone through it. Get rid of this guy. Get rid of that. And muffler was the only guy i ever heard answer. One time it was brilliant was absolutely brilliant and they said what what did you make that trade. I forget exactly what the question was something like that. And he said because the fans wanted it. And i looked up and i went. Oh that's brilliant. That's brilliant. You know because anyone else tv it's taboo to ever base your decisions based on what the fans hockey knowledge is right. You just can't do it right because the old adage that if you make your decisions based on what the fans want you'll soon be sitting with them exactly exactly right and and you know it's like it's like people complaining about the show where you know when you do you do a morning show people complain about you. Get this email going. Get rid of that guy. Jerome's fucking pig. And i don't want them and then so the next guy love it right so you just can't do it right. You can't do it. But that was the john montclair who answered that. Cut the guy off. You didn't know what to say. Why did you make that you love the fans wanted you know it was it was cool was really up so yeah i. It is something that it'd be hard to come back from a media perspective but it's also it's like maybe pro. Sports is the one area where the customer isn't always right because and social media shows you that you think you have your finger on the pulse of the fans very often. You just getting the vocal fans have something to say. And they really inspired and energized. Post off there's often a silent majority who feels completely completely something different. In any event we should we take time out because when we come back and that was certainly sad news to hear john. Muckler's passing really good guy. Great hockey man doug and to be missed by a lot of people when we come back we're going to talk about Our guest in the next episode. And we'll also talk about the nhl selling off the names the names of their divisions for the coming season. That's coming up after these words. Area real estate needs in two thousand and twenty one happy new year from the glenn walton real estate team at glen walton dot com. James coming up tomorrow. We're going to be joined by. Tsn twelve hundred sends color analyst. And good pal of the show. Gordon wilson. Oh fantastic woody goody pilsen goody goody did that back in the day to you always called them woody and no one knew why but it became a thing a taco sentences and catch up with gordon and and Yeah i i mean gordy was one of the first people. We knew that That was diagnosed with and he's doing fine and getting ready for a new. Nhl season is talking to them today. And he's instead of going down to the at rink and you know getting in the scrums with mike and stuff and getting all the interviews is job house to record these zoom calls as the sends make various players and coaches available is job is to hit on record and kind of keep an eye on things that way to two different world for the media right now. I'm looking forward to that. Fantastic and the nhl selling off. Its division names. We already have to get used to a new setup as far as new names because we had to realign the nhl to realign the league us we for example if a new north division with all seven canadian teams in it. It's not going to be called. Just the north. It's going to be called the scotiabank north. They have sold off the names. They've rotten A few extra shackles by selling off the names the west division will be the honda west. You've got the discover central division. And let me see here. I can't quite read. It's a lot of letters there. Oh yeah the mass mutual east division. What is that. I don't know what that company is. Matt went mutual financial. Sounds like yeah or insurance one of the two. Oh so it's interesting stevie. Okay that the the nhl is starting to prostitute itself. Okay okay settings. What's what's really funny. Where they get caught with their pants down right is everyone talks about. I hope the nhl never goes to the way. It is in europe where there's advertise all over every jersey and the helmets and the and the sticks and it's all over the joint right there look like a nascar you know a guy who steps on the ice european player and the nfl. The nhl has always been holding back saying. We don't wanna do that. You know we don't wanna put the fans through that all that stuff and so now it's like. Hey wait a minute. so now we're going to. We're going to sell anything. Which which that that is bound to come. Stevie bound to come here helmet stickers to right. So that's the second right right so they're gonna start to sell everything. Give it given the given the loss of revenue here to right and the nhl be okay. But it's kind of like okay i. We should've never said that we wouldn't sponsor anything that someone wants to buy. But let's do it slowly here. Let's sell the divisions offer this thing. Yeah well the horse's head out of the barn to with in both cases people think it all they just doing it for this one time or during cove and then it'll go back to normal if the sky doesn't fall and they can line their pockets with these advertisements whether it's the helmet stickers with the name of the division you can damn well bet they're gonna keep rolling with it and not only that keep adding new stuff and see how far they can push the envelope on it. You don't wanna change my name. Jim k for jerome. Oh come on your jim. Jim k four jerome. That's the joke. I used like an hour ago on twitter. No way yeah. I did not know that i did not got a great minds. Think alike thing i did. I did not know that Jim jim jim jim for jerome. Or or. Let's see if i was going to endorse a product. Stevie that you know. Of course. I do jim king right. Great ford dealer. If i was going to endorse a product it would be like. Jim triple extra large condoms jerome. In on her hoop. Because we be you got something like that. That's what the world's into stevie that's what the world's coming to you strike me as an insurance ontario of guy. I could see you being named a call you ali or something like that or all in one of the two jimmy. All ins jerome. You are all in. You are all in maybe properly supplements or something or paiko or glenn walton real estate team. Would you have to get the. Would you have to get the tattoo somewhere on your head or something like i dunno immediate represent a little more than just the name something like that. That's what the world's coming to remember. Steve couple of boxers had permanent tattoos of companies put on them on their skin. Baby yeah well. They all had that. But it was caesar's palace on the was. I don't think there's a permanent tattoo on their backs but that was another way to advertise for a while. I don't think boxing does that any longer. I think it may have been exclusively some celebrity boxing. But i stand to be corrected. I just remember. I remember as like you. Gotta be kidding. Me this is an overload dignity. Here i'm going. I'm going to do a permanent tattoo. I i think there are people who did it. Some someone told me but anyway. That's all that we're going to think about that for sure. Well jim ford. Any final thoughts. Today jim jim kaye ford. Forget the lessons journal. No you don't get you. Don't get to keep your surname. It's not that easy. You lose your surname. You're getting all this money. Jim ford but your final thoughts. My final thoughts. Stevie is. I'd love the did you watch the semifinal game between Do we wanna talk about this. Steve the states in the future did watch the semifinal. That might have been the best hockey game. I've seen in a long time the semifinal usa and finland. You're pausing because you're going. Your final thought is a sport station. She's changed your name to jim k ford and you're all hockey all the time all the sudden it's crazy i mean my takeaway from yesterday as we record this. We're getting ready for the final between canada and the us at the world junior hockey championship and edmonton. So we're kind of ignoring the world. Juniors is going to be kind of weird just in the timing with recording and airtime so We're gonna talk a little bit more about the world. Juniors and the gold medal game in our next episode. But i don't mind looking back. I take away from yesterday in. The semifinals was how unbelievably good efficient hard working. Canada was like under tourneys. The sixty seven head coaches team candidates head coaches well. He deserves nothing but accolades forgetting all eighteen skaters pulling on the rope the way he was the way he did like. Just whether it's back checking for checking entries russia's Racist for pox deals candidate played every moment of that game in a five. Nothing victory over russia like they're freaking lives depended on it it was unreal up. Well how not to mention stevie. How's it going for levi goalie. How how how's how's it going for him right now. Every freaking game the guy plays. There's another two million on his contract. It was nhl deal. You know three shuttles or something. Yeah i mean the thing about when you look at that goaltending match up. It's crazy because reverend levi played last year in the tier two junior hockey late with a carleton place. Canadians and part of that jason clarke factory and he was drafted like way way. Way late Let me find out exactly where he was drafted. He was drafted in the seventh round. Two hundred twelve overall by the florida. Panthers in this year's draft mind you this year's draft meanwhile the guy on the other end who looked like a fish out of water in an oscar off. He was terrible and that that's a guy that some people were thinking. The sends might take fifth overall in the first round. So it's crazy. How inexact science is to try and draft and right evaluate. Who's going to be a good goalie and eighteen right. And i know you give kudos to that co to the coach all the players and stuff like that. But you don't win these things. You don't win these things. Unless you get the really good goaltending like the superstar goaltending and god to the that that kids unreal unreal and the week and the way the you know he's he could have a clinic. He could have a clinic on. Not giving up rebounds. I've i've watched most of the games right. How often that guy that never gives up aretha takes heart off the past and snaps the puck back before franken deflects off out into the face off circle. Yeah anyway love love. The kit love the good for him. Astonishing that there's only looking at the draft for this year. Only five guys. He was like there was there was six guys. Six picks remaining the entire draft and finally the florida panthers to twelve decided to take devon levi kennedy only five more picks after that so he was almost the nhl version of mr irrelevant which they give this handle to give the nfl draft The traffic that was dead. Last overall devon levi and again this this draft was from october hurts mr great with it. She's giving them a bit harsh. You know he's mr elvis the thousands of people who didn't get drafted yup and there. You go now. I gotta go home and my parents final thought more of a final discussion but will call it quits there. We'll talk to you next. Episode when gordy wilson joins us good night. Everybody we'll see.

E65 - WARNE V WARREN ON HOW SENS TOP PROSPECTS ARE LOOKING, JIM SAVES THE LIFE OF A CFL LEGEND

"Steve one project. How goes in welcome to the project, presented by faces magazine. It's episodes, sixty five greatest NHL player to wear number sixty five. Yep. You guessed it. It's Andrew Sean number sixty five I'm not mentally ready to consider other options. We're podcast talking hockey, sports, and whatever I'm Steve Orlov, Jim Jerome two of us were TSN radio partners for a decade and our crease crashing the podcast world running the goalie and dealing with the consequence. I'm an Ottawa Jimmy's in Edmonton today on the show. It's an update on sense, development gab with post media's Ken Warren, no relation of than longtime media, pal. Roberto Longo calling it a career the NHL free agency tours are underway, should we take those seriously will basketball one day surpass hockey as the top sport in Canada? And we'll Mitch monarchy offer. She did or not well drought. Have Monory your next four first rounders all straight ahead. On the Steve Warren project, thanks to our partners faces magazine. Jim K Ford, all insurance on -tario, and our be computing. It's Jimmy in lovely downtown Edmonton. How're you? How are they shimmy? Well, I'm Steve I'm laughing at your number sixty five because anybody knows that the greatest player where number sixty five was Ron Buchanan with the Hamilton tiger cats. Back in the seventies. Yeah. I swear to God I think you can name more CFL players from the seventies, then you can of any player in sport here in nineteen twenty nineteen there's no doubt. There's no Bill Simon's Steve with the Toronto Argonauts now thirty three you don't know that you're guessing that really check it your stop the show right now. You can go. That's outrageous, if you know that that's, that's crazy. That's crazy. My dad handed me down his CFL cards, and for some reason, Bill Simon's, I didn't even know 'til you said, if it was Bill Simmons or Bill Simmons played for the art, a fullback and I had literally eleven doubles of him. I had so many of his card, and there was number thirty three and I hit it with Bill Simmons right on. I will see I will see your Bill Simon, Steve, and I'm going to raise you. I'm going to raise you Chuck ily loved him. Withdraw trial Argonauts. Go all day on this Steve. If you want. Wait Chuckie Lee was Hamilton, tiger cats. Chuck ily Steve, I think, played some time with the Argonauts, I think I think I can't can check you have to check that because I think Joe Zueger was probably the quarterback. And of course, was it one of every everyone's favourite named bullet cough. I think was maybe a Montreal guy. He's a longtime NFL guy, but he was part of that. Montreal. Alouette s- surge of NFL talent Nelson scall- brought in Guiseley David Overstreet over streets. There was also the quarterback Vince Ferragamo. Yup. Yup. And comes no middle linebacker for the Alawites all this NFL talent that he brought in because he had money to burn and part of those early Edmonton Oilers stays as well. I remember on all those names, and of course, who was the who is the big fair gamble came from the Rams to play Montreal. But I think just before him was big tall guy quarterback who was who was a was the long's long time quarterback in the Alouette s-, Joe Barnes, seventy not Joe bar before Joe Barnes before Joe bar. Don jonas. Nope. Nope. No. He would he would have been there when not Leon mcquaid. Of course. I got it. It's sunny. Wade sunny way. Exactly stevie. Exactly. You're on fire pal. Well, I grew up on it. I was a little kid and my dad, and that's all we did was watch CF L football. It's kind of interesting now that my dad is all NFL, all the time somewhere along the way he lost. The CFL lost. My dad who was as big from the time. He was a kid. He was as big fan as I know. And he brainwashed to schedule an rough riders fan and later become an auto a rough riders fan here in town. But somewhere along the way he doesn't even watch the CFO anymore. He is all NFL all the time. Big patriots fan. I'll tell you something Steve. I'll tell you something about these schedule and riot. A rough riders must speak of George read. Okay. Who was the great running back. George had a move. If you ever knew this George read how to move that after every time he got tackled. He got up the same way all the time. It would sort of roll over onto one knee. Okay. Roll over onto one knee, and then get up slowly all the time. No matter if he was hurt or not as whole idea was. So they would never know if I was hurt. Right. Never know that was his move. His other move was putting his head down and smashing into the other team's defensive line and injuring them. He was he was. I knew I knew Georgia beat he when I moved out here in the mid eighties and eighty five he was the sales manager for Molson down in Calgary for many years. Yeah. So I'll tell you a terrible story, a terrible story about George so the contact days are a big thing here in Benton. It's like the exhibition. Do they still do Ottawa, no? The last couple of weeks. August. Why? No, they don't do it anymore. No, I must be at least eight nine years and since the last one because they're talking about moving it away from lines. I remember. I remember that. Wait. K days is the same deal here. And so we are heavily involved, the berry address up, like Colonel Sanders, gotta wear the time for a couple of weeks and Avesta all this shit. Everyone does it. So when it was over, we went to our manager's house because he had a pool a rarity and Edmonton no-one has pools her to have a big a big party and we're all standing around the pool, and we're all in our suits, and the and the wives of there in the girlfriends and stuff, and there's sort of leaning, they're, they're standing up around the pool and drinking wine, and we're having fun report when we're getting we're getting smashed, and Georgia's still outside on the patio not coming very close to the pool. And I you can if you're any sort of half deck. Steve, you can tell when a guy doesn't swim Georgia's creeping out like a cat. You know, he's in the living room, and we're all standing, you know, we're, we're out in the pool girls are leaning against the edge the pool stand up drinking wine. We're having a hell of. And, and you can George sorta just creeps out, you know, a few feet, and it goes back in into the house and comes on a little closer. It's very clear Steve, very clear that this guy wants nothing to do with coming around water. Okay. Got a shirt and ties still on full full suits snappy dresser. Georgia's a really snappy that the Rolex watch go. And so he just know every every few minutes, he come out a little further Nora having go back inside. And then, eventually he, you know, he, he trusted it walked outside with the bottle of wine, and he leaned over the port couple of glasses of wine for the girls, and I was nice and my buddy comes up behind and pushes them into the pool. Steve. Oh, no. Shoves him into the pool, and what happened. I'm trying to think what happened. Oh, yeah. He started drowning. That's it. That's it. Okay. He's, you know the shallow end goes to the deep end and there's a slope. Okay. Well, that's where he falls into street shoes on and he's trying to get his footing. You know, he's drowning going up and down. He can't get his footing. Because he's on the on the slow party keeps slipping going under the water at. So in I go around I go into grab them and just like here, but they're just beating the shit on me. The head okay. Just hammering me in the fucking face and, and down I go, Stephen and get underneath by the waist and, and pull them over to the side. And we get him out of the pool. Okay. And he just he doesn't say anything. He was totally embarrassed. You know, totally embarrassed, and he just walked inside and we'd never saw him again. Never saw him again. And I was going, Larry, Larry good. What were you freaking thinki- Larry everyone else that, you know, as go I just having fun. You know that looks like a lot of fun. Look, Georgia's a lot of. Run there. Okay as you almost lost his life. So we said you're going to be debt. George is gonna kill you man. When the next time he sees you. So best left, unsaid, Larry, you maybe want to maybe wanna send an apology. I don't even know if you should talk to him person. But maybe drop a letter or something to well, the guys that, okay yeah, yeah, I lost my mind there. So we had a luncheon later on up in Edmonton, few weeks later, Georgia's there and Larry goes, he gets up and says, hey, George has a bucket that says, George George read fund for swimming lessons in front of everyone. No. Yeah. Yeah. Just like dude, will you stop? That's leaving eight Lyon. Oh man. It was just incredible. But. Keep to this poke the bear, you know, anyway shortages, a great guy. George Josiah's a great guy. He's still he's still around. Probably getting close to eighty maybe I don't know if he said, oh, I didn't realize he was still with us. Well. Georgia's alive. Yup. I think he lives in Regina. He's back living there. So anyway, that's gone, some CFL story Steve. That's incredible. Wow. So the time the gym saved a CFL hall of famers life love that. Yeah. Yeah, I forgot about that. All right. Let's change gears a little bit. When we come back talk a little bit of the sends development camp. So I thought we might check up on how some of the prospects of doing with post media's Kenny, Warren. How you doing Kenny? I'm doing great great summers here except for hockey exactly. I wanna talk a little bit about the sense development can't because. Well, there's not really a lot else for sends fans to kinda hang their hat on. Yes. The average sends fan with they're excited about with the Ottawa Senators, the kids, and well, this is a week for the kids for sure. Let's begin with the player that you have found to be the most impactful, the player that is impressed you most at development Cam. I like I guess Eric brannstrom on defense when we heard about a lot about him because of the stone trade. And I think just in that kind of environment. He really stand out. I mean you can get into a training camp and you're going to get into. The exhibition games. And you see, we handles as, as the talent level picks up. But in this kind of level with his peers here, he really does stand out and way can move the puck on the way he can join the rush. She's he's, he's a player and he's going to be something for senators to watch up front. I think Drake bathroom is a guy that his almost there as, as an NHL player, he certainly had an outstanding year with the Belleville, and I think he's, he's going to get I in my mind. I think he's going to be one of the guys gets shot right off the next year. Let's talk about brannstrom a little more. I think the knock on him would probably end up being not a particularly big guy, and that's actually to me, a bit of a concern, the left side of that defense is all movers. None of them really physically got Shibat you've got will. And now you're gonna add brannstrom to the mix, and maybe even you know, in the next couple of years Thompson, not particularly physical, guys. Do you think there's enough beef on that blue line? Eventually they probably going to have to dress that, and I, I don't know, maybe not left side. I mean maybe if Christianne becomes that, that multi-purpose guy that you want. Right. Than than he can handle some of it. I mean down the road, Mark yet skis and going to be here. We're gonna probably appreciate his talents and what he brought. But I mean I don't think he's a long-term solution here. And I think at some point you are going to have to address that the the game changing we all know that faster game. But at some point, I think you need the shutdown guy, the guy that they tried to make Cody CC into, and Cody CC, probably just, you know, we'll see what happens with Cody CC here, but they don't have a shutdown guy per se. I think that could play in the top four right now let's talk a little bit about Logan Brown. He's now in his fourth development camp. Are you seeing signs that maybe a breakthrough his finally imminent? Or are you worried? This is maybe going to be a pick where they look back and say, maybe that wasn't the right pick. I still think he's going to be a natural player. I think he's gonna. Be at okay player thing with him as he probably has to play in the first two lines, right at to be a star. If you watch him in a power plant, I've seen a little bit of him down in Belleville what he can do in power play. And I, you know, you know, we likes comparisons if you watch him in power play think Jason Spencer because he's got the reach. He's got this is he's got the poise with the puck and he can slow the game down a little bit with that extra space. And I think he really is a dominant player in the power play. Now whether the pace of the game, it's always been the knock right about his his skating and is defensive awareness. And that's, that's what he's going to have to prove here. I think depending on right now you go into it, and you got call in weight, and you got junk, Abby patio and you got Chris Tierney, and then you've got what it's very thin down the middle. And again, there's another guy that probably have an opportunity. I would think at some point the senators are going to go and try to sign a veteran center to maybe fill the gap in their fill the void. But I think Logan, Brown is a guy that's gonna get every opportunity to try. To show he can play I sends camp for a guy like Josh Norris. What are your early impressions of him a guy that came over in the air Carlson trade? Yeah. Very, very poised in the drills and the problem right now is hard to see as he doesn't still got some repercussions. The shoulder surgery, so is not not playing interest quad game in this criminals skill wise, and skating wise. I mean he looks like one of the best guys out there. So we're gonna have to wait to training camp to see when rookie camp probably than training camp and see how he stacks up, but it's too bad because he's not, you know, I understand the senators in this position they're not going to force the guy in because if they're not one hundred percent sure that, that there's gonna be no re- professions of the shoulder. But very polish guy, these guys, a lot of these guys talk to them. They are polished guys. I mean that it eighteen nineteen years old, these guys talk like they're thirty you know, they I mean, part of it is these guys have been in hockey since there. Six is levels, and this is part of the game to the understand what it's all about and understand how to deal with the media and very polished very confident, but not not a cocky guy, but I think he, he is going to be in the equation, not necessarily this year. But I think in the next year to and that Carlson trade down the road, we, we might see a little bit differently in three or four years. If some of these guys Pano can warn joining us from post media talking about the sends and development camp in gold. There's a new face, and it's a big one. He's a big lad. It's been Bishop almost not quite as tall, but it's six foot seven meds. Sogard has he looked in the early going look good. I mean these guys I mean he's, he's being Foley's. You know, some reports that six eight they say one ninety. So you think six eight one ninety he's got to put some a little bit of beef on, I guess, you know put too much fun on a goal. But. He knows that, you know, he's gonna get a little stronger before. He's ready. Whether that's in two years, or three years, or five years. Even and I think a lot of people surprising, they picked, another goalie, given their you know, the way the organization is going. And I, I in my mind, I'm just thinking, you know, maybe with goaltending and it's such a funny thing to figure maybe throw if you throw ten darts at the wall, you know, you hope that one or two stick, and then and then you're, you're looking good down the road. So it's such a long term thing with goalies so far. He looks good. But you'd also there's another guy people kind of forgetting, here's Kevin Mandalay's who had a really good year last year in Cape Breton and his year further ahead of Sogard in terms of the draft. So I think maybe you know, he's got another year junior, I think start talking about him, and there's Gustafsen Anders Berg, so it's layered, right? In terms of, you know, once seem Craig Anderson, has gone here, either some point this year late in the year, maybe a trade deadline pickup, and then Hobart moves. Up notch. And then these guys move up and so to get back to your rigid question with Sogard. I think he's look good. But I mean they're not looking at him tomorrow to be their goalie. It's, it's maybe three or four years down. The road is the new head coach new sheriff in town in DJ Smith and obviously development camp isn't where he's necessarily going to put his Mark on the team. But I wonder have you seen anything different than you saw in recent development camps, undergill Bouch, as at a different tone to things and moving forty you expecting a different tone DJ Smith with his club with him development camp. I think is not really his, his baby. Right. He's sitting there watching these watch saying. Okay. I mean, look at all form to Drake baths. I'm looking at Logan Brown guys that, you know, brands from guys that might be able to step right in and getting a first impression of who they are. But I think he's observing as much as anybody else's at this point, and the development, guys, are, you know, that are familiar with the players, there's a lot of homework all the nutrition stuff. And, and they know the projects if a guy came in last year out of shape. Or not doing what they told them to do that. This is catch up time. Right. So it's almost a lot of the strength and conditioning, guys from what I understand, from DJ Smith is I think it's a blank page for a lot of guys because his new coach coming in, and I don't think if with Bush, a at times, guys cut corners, a little bit, especially veteran guys I don't think that's going to happen when he comes in if if the senators finish thirtieth or thirty first next year is anybody can be shocked or surprised. And I think it's about establishing in the young guys. This is the way we have to play eventually to get to the top. And I think he's going to really hard on young players. And, you know, maybe that pays off in two or three years down the road, any sense if who you think DJ Smith, eventually chooses for captain of this team I guess it probably comes down for most two guys that Chabad orca Chuck. Yeah. And I think from talking around the room in they may go again next this year with Gan without a gap. And I think that's probably, you know, ad remote BAAs are not even remote possible. Distinct possibility. I think the way it went last year and you talk around the room. It is cooks spot in waiting Chamot's great player. And he, you know, may eventually in a or something, but I think if in a perfect world if you know, takes it to another level from what he did last year in terms of, you know, there's no, Mark stolen there to insulate them anymore. There's, there's no mad Shane and you saw at the end last year that on the ice. Maybe chokes was even even more forceful. In terms of. Hey, I'm a go to guy on the ice off the Icees like no other nineteen year old you'd ever seen before. In terms of confident he was, I think if he grows another year like that I, I think, in next season, so twenty twenty one I could see him as the gap twenty twenty one is that magical year, right? The, the club last time last year, but this time said that they're gonna have unparalleled success in twenty twenty one and spend. To the cap. And we both as we speak, we're have chuckling our voice, because I think there's a, a lack of belief that, that will actually occur just based on what happened in the last year, they said goodbye trading away five really key guys on this club. Are you getting any kind of vibe in the early going of? I don't know what change in, in, in the weather, a little bit change in that they're really going to do what they said they're going to do that. They're going to spend the cap because that's the concern. Everybody has everybody wants to be excited when development camp rolls around with all these kids. But the everybody has that sense of disbelief that I don't really think you're going to keep these guys around when they hit you FA in the immediate. It's good spending to the floor because that's going to be a challenge guys right now just to get there. And, but I actually understand that mentality if you're going to go, you know, if you're gonna go with kids right now maybe you're gonna have to bring in a couple of veterans to overpay them even to to get to the floor. And, and if you can get some assets back. I will believe this. I will believe this that they're doing what they say. They went Tom Chabad could sign totally agree. And Thomas dot got to do at this summer. Because if you get if you get into September October next year, then what are we talking about all around the league, we're talking about offer sheets who would be more prime target for an offer sheet next next summer than, than Thomas Chabad? So I think if they get Thomas Chabad done, and, you know, I mean, we throw the numbers out seven million, eight million, whatever is, maybe more as a as a player long-term deal, if they make that contract, then I think you say, okay, maybe they, they can be kept to their word because then they're going to be going through it again. The following somewhere with presumably with Chuck, right? And then we're gonna lock up our core guys and we're going to build around these guys. And I think people might say, okay, maybe these guys know what they're doing, and we can trust them. It will last one Kenny this week. We learned that Daniel offer would not be going into the hall of fame to the third time, the hall he was eligible for the third time he was passed over was there, any surprise with that decision. I'm mildly surprised that Alfredsson didn't get in. But what more surprising me more is. There's a lot of contemporaries of of Franson. You can throw the names. Mogilny Brindamour is on the on these guys. I you have a really good debate, right? I mean auto I'm sure the debate leans towards Alfredsson because of, you know, people familiar with what he did and taking team was nowhere as captain and and carried them into one of the best teams in the league for so many years, and what he meant as a captain here. But in other markets other players have had that kind of impact to so that, that part of it with Alfredsson. Yeah, mild surprise it wasn't him. But what I'm more surprised at at hardly. A odor an island with is opinion is. Where did he Carboneau come from and the Vaclav data Nancy? Well, that's that is a different sort of era and different thing. And it's very political, right? Because it's it has to do with international players, breaking boundaries and coming through. And that's to me is almost like a different argument, right there, great players, but they're probably being rewarded for, you know, the, the hurdles nuclear great just to get to the NHL, but the Carboneau one in your warding checking type of player, a great player, everybody loves decarbonising, but it seems to a can of worms here because you've you're, you're going on different avenue. What kind of player you're looking at to go in and I think they're going to have a problem down the road. Because now all of the carbon type players wising he wasn't in and, and the other angle is with Elfi radio scored gig Carboneau two to one. But at the same time, let's not dismiss what a great defensive offie was right. We talk about Merck stone, you know, and, and the Selke year after year Daniel Alfredsson soccer, even sacrificed a lot. Offense because he would step back and play in defensive positions at times when the needed, you know, he played like Fisher said, Jason sped at times. And I just think of that run. You know, he had a lot of great years here. But I think the run where they just missed against Anaheim. He would've won the consummate that year oughta one he was their best player in the playoffs. And maybe you know, we're talking about what would a tip the balance a Stanley Cup, winning the might probably would have been one of those things put over the top. But I, I don't know if it's necessarily animosity against Alfredsson as opposed to trying to figure out where where the hall of fame committee is is thinking in terms of what they're rewarding. And what they wanna reward because is it? If you're going to go down the road of rewarding so-called, checkers boys. It's going to get really difficult in the future. When when you're trying to decide between them Drome again Lemaire in Hosa Claude Lemieux like the. Getting really interesting type discussions. And I'm not sure they wanted to go there, but it's intriguing and I've never I don't think have you near experienced seen any kind of after the announces sure some people grumble and all this guy shouldn't have got in this guy should have gone. I don't remember ever being as much controversy over over an appointment as this one. The real controversy is your neighbor starting up his lawn more in the middle of our interview. So we're going to take care of that right now. Kenny, wonderful backyard here, by the way, it's a real Shangri LA back. Your hope you enjoy your summer invite everyone here. Excellent sounds great. It features Montreal. Actor jay. Berra shell and an off season. Chat with Thomas dot checkout faces MAG dot CA messiah Jerry held his season ending press conference the other day and talked, of course about being fourth as the executive of the year in the NBA fourth. Are you kidding me? Not maybe the whole thing with a the cop on the side. Online at something to do with. I don't know. But I guess they vote for that thing before the playoffs even start so that, that would certainly bear into things. Figured name, it now you would say yet messiah Jerry's your guy, but he was asked pretty early on in the news conference, Jimmy about whether or not he thinks that basketball will one day surpass hockey as the top sport in Canada. And he said he thinks it will one day. What do you think of that? That's the right answer. You know, if you're if you're any sort of any sort of guy at any level of any sport, if they ask you about your sport, and it's close, it's close. I think that was the right answer. Whether he believes it or not. You know. But you gotta believe right? You got to believe the guys all about that, of course, is all about that, you know, like even his stage speech at the parade, and that sort of stuff, you know, he constantly all the time went to no one believed that this could ever happen. No one ever believed, you know that we would do anything. NBA nobly. But now we're NBA champions in Canada. You know, he's, he's a great guy. He's a great interview. I don't know. I've never met him but. I think and by the way, Steve, I he may be right. You know, he may be right. Yeah. See think that well time will tell you know, it's sports sports fans are most of them are fickle. You know there's there's the you know you're in the twenty percent Steve of or thirty percent of no matter what happens to my team. I'm there. I'm there, and there's even sense fans right? Who get pissed at even the stuff I was in about center. They got nothing going on the got nothing going on. They got thirty million. They should be spending their not do whatever whether to get to it or not. Who knows? But that's my opinion of, of the sense right now when I hear other teams. Signing superstars and getting a bunch done. So I get a lot. I get some pushback from some fans of the sensing, you know, come on, man know you gotta believe, but so there will there will always be those raptor fans but there the wrestler fickle the rest of them are fickle. If if you don't keep winning. I'm not I'm not inning trying to make that rhyme. Sti you don't keep winning. I'm not inning. What do you think I honestly think that it could? I think we're in a situation where we've seen this massive growth in Toronto with from a participation standpoint, like just real athletes of excellence coming out of the Toronto basketball scene to be NBA stars. So from a participation standpoint, the sport is growing and from a spectator standpoint, obviously the raptors and what they've done over the last three months in particular has has changed the landscape somewhat. I'm obviously fairly recently removed from terrestrial radio and sports talk radio and the high priced consultants and things and the discussion is always about. NBA. Like my demographic demographic were around the same age hockey is king. But for those who are under thirty years of age to totally different dynamic, when it comes to interest level in basketball, I was talking to one of our, our good sponsors the other day. These like a love the show, love and the show. Listen to every show, not so big on when you talk about asking ball, but love in the show, then if you know I talked to my daughter's boyfriend and, you know, he's more down with the basketball. So, I think basketball has a real opportunity because you're so up up up close to it. And I mean that from a spectator standpoint, you're really close to the action, you can hear everything that's going on. And you can see the facial expressions and everything. I think there's such a connection between fan and player that I think it really has a chance to potentially we're years away from this, but it could potentially become a more popular sport in this country than the sport hockey. Think think Stephen, we did do the radio show from I was from nineteen ninety nine till till two thousand twelve Zo over those thirteen years. You, you were there for almost all of that I only worked half a year before you came along. We'd never talk basketball. Never. Right. In fact. In fact, we sort of laugh if I said, we someone would call about the NBA member the emails. Are you guys ever gonna talk about basketball ever? Give it any of your show. You remember those of course. Yeah but we get those from NASCAR fans to. Right. Right. But now it's not the case, so winning winning breeds interest. You know that you have these shows now are everyone's been talking about the NBA for for a long time. Now, you know, whether the whether the GM from Toronto placed fourth, obviously, it is done before the plan. But even that even that how well Toronto did. But maybe up there in the top two or something. But I don't follow basketball enough to know what of teams had great success before the playoffs. Could I think it hasn't chance to maybe one day, overtake hockey do, I think it will? I don't know. I think unless things really balance out, like I can't see the NBA going to Winnipeg for example. And so, in terms of the Canadian sports, fans interest just the fact he of seven markets right now, that have NHL hockey, I think that will continue to win the day, unless you start seeing the NBA expand to various locations in Canada. I still like the NHL on a long-term sense, but that could change if you know Vancouver gets team, Montreal gets a team. And so, so I get the sense Steve when he was asked that question that he was talking about the raptors compared to the Leafs and not and not so much. The rest of the country. 'cause I, I don't I don't. I'm not sure where that will end up. You gotta ask yourself. When you say we'll basketball takeover from hockey. Well, what do you mean by that? How will it take over? But he mean viewing audience. You know attendance. I, I don't know. I don't know what they mean by that who's going to how are you going to take over into different sports? Certainly the top story in Toronto right now beyond the raptors n what's going to happen with Kawhi Leonard is what's going to happen with Mitch martyr. I'd say Toronto sports fans are holding their breath in both cases I think, more for kuwa- Leonard than Mitch martyr because I think Toronto would continue to be good on the ice. If Mitch Marna goes elsewhere, I feel like boy, the raptors would take a massive step back if Kawhi Leonard ended up in another market. What do you think? Giving. What, what's the deal that if you were going to get this guy, you gotta give four first rounders is that well Mitch martyrs restricted free agent right now? And so he's not going anywhere until either the leaf sign him while he stayed in, but he could also be offer sheet. So as an RFA a restricted free agent another team could come in sign him. It would be to a massive number. So because it's a massive number that team that signed him would have to give Toronto four first rounders and Toronto, even before that occurred would have the right to match any offer. That's out there. And so, yeah, that's the bottom line. That's not so staggering anymore that, you know, I don't take ten first rounders shit. You know where. Assuming I don't I don't give shit. So you got MICH, martyr coming to your team. You gotta believe that he's going to improve your team, and that you're not gonna place you know that you're gonna make the playoffs every year. So that just that doesn't put you into the first round very well. Anyway, you know, unless you're last, right? Do they still do that, when they do the lottery pick if I don't I don't know? Exactly, how does it work? Now, if your best chance your chance of getting first overall like eighteen point five percent of your dead last overall. Yeah. So it's not it's not that good deal. It used to be right now, if you're dead last before he used to get the first pick didn't you of course in the draft. Yes. So and first round is don't always work out. The draft is lucky. You know how these guys are gonna you just don't know. That's what I was talking to win the other day. And that's how, how do you feel about the draft how to go for the cause I don't have to wait and see. We'll have to wait and see. So that, that doesn't that doesn't bother me that much. You know, I think there's a perception to your point among hockey fans when it's like you have to give it four first grounders four first rounders. No. How dare you? There's this perception, they're all going to be Connor mcdavid. The reality is any team that gets Mitch. Martyr is automatically going to be a better hockey club with martyr. So their draft pick is not going to be that great in the first round, they might be, you know, four first rounders, we're not giving up four first overall first rounder, we're giving up like maybe four for guys in the bottom ten of the first round, and those are crap shoots fifty fifty at best. And right now it sounds like the islanders are really prepared to do something that Lula Morello, who is like the jilted lover, who. Was the Leafs general manager replaced by cow dubus? So he becomes a consultant, and then ends up leaving which would tell you that he wasn't very happy about being asked to step aside becomes the islanders GM and hell hath, no fury. Like a GM scorned that he might role in give martyr, an offer sheet just to be a pain in the ass to his old team and say, here's thirteen million kid over the next five years and force the Leafs to match that. Yeah. I mean if you look back Stevie I don't wanna throw into the bus here, but I got a little bit the last ten first rounders the last twelve first rounders over the overall union. Yeah. I overall. Comic. David was an anomaly, I think how of the other ones done. Are they are they topping the league still you'd have to look that up where where they are? Well Austin Matthews comes immediately to mind. He's good. He was good. He was first overall isn't any guarantee of anything, either, like the sense, for example in their history of had three three times first overall draft pick. But none of them turned out to be what you'd call hall of famers superstars. Yeah. There you go. So, so don't worry about it. Don't worry about the four first rounders. Whatever you're going to do to get this guy, you know. That's my opinion of Chris Phillips, occasionally listens to the show. I've got to take that last statement back Chris Phillips superstar big rig brewery out tensely could send beer over. I'm just saying, you know, we Al fee in the hall of fame. No, Chris Phillips, in the hall of fame. We're just we're just we're just playing the naysayer there Chris when we did that take. Okay. We're just doing the other side, you know we got we got. We got to be full well rounded here about time now for our Rb computing web poll and it's easy, which three cents prospects. That'll be a death camp this week as we record this will go on to have the most impactful NHL careers. I sent along the sense development camp roster and got quite a bit of feedback big wreck will go with Norris Bathurst and brannstrom snow big stretch, but could Chuck Norris are going to play like a couple of old chums on an outdoor rink LT, like big Rick also one of our good members. So he saying for the sense or another team. Save choices for me ago, go for brannstrom bothersome and formenting matrix. Always tongue in cheek go Bathurst. And after he's traded to the Rangers to save money Guston as free agent to Chicago and Bernard Docker with Pittsburgh after they sends don't give him in our FA contract to save money there as well. We got Matt Larose Bathurst brannstrom, Bernard Docker and says, a lot of Bathurst and brannstrom coming up and then kind of varies from there. So thanks to everybody who got there. This is basically players who are unrestricted free agents in the NHL getting wined and dined by various NHL teams across the land, and is this all bullshit is the question. Why said the S word how dare me. Are these legitimate are most of these tours just players trying to get the upper hand in the talks with the team? They actually want to play for and is out there wasting most of the team's time, I think, so Steve, I think so, you know, it's the big bad world of sports is always based on performance. Always always based on performance. Although there's, you know, you brought up Chris Phillips name earlier and you heard a lot about this guy or Elfi that you're a lot about this guy that away from the ice. They did a million things for the community. Does all these things in the dressing with the guys and hard work and practice kept his kids here, moved to town, all that sort of stuff. Okay. That doesn't equate to dole though Steve, that doesn't quite to, to money you know, no one's ever said. Well, he's we're gonna give him four million. But so good where, you know, we're going to renegotiate give nine point two. Not going to happen. So I think it means shit. I think shit, I don't think owners are gonna fall for that. I think they do. You think so? Yeah. I think if you know, MAC, Shane, for example, is going to the Montreal Canadians to be wined and dined, and see everybody and the facility and all that. And what's going on in Montreal? I don't think he's gonna play for Montreal. Maybe we'll let I think so. And but he this is one of several stops he's making talking, and I feel like most of it is just window-dressing. And I think agents believe that, you know, that this does up the ante that in the auction for this guy if all of a sudden, I think it's bird in the hand, I got to Shane coming, you know, maybe it's Columbus e stays of Columbus resigns there. And that was certainly good for the sends 'cause they get another first round draft pick out of that, if he resigned with Columbus. But let's say it is the blue jackets, they, they're good shape to get Shane. Oh, look he's he's over there dating. Some other girl, I'm gonna have to up my game to get him. More impressed by me. Well. These guys have played around the league before and they're going to go. Visit a city to check it out. You know what, what, you know what, what are you doing there to go and see and go, oh my God. I'm glad I came here. They actually have streets with cars on there and stuff. So I think I can get along. You know, they've got they've got restaurants, Oma. Thank god. I'm glad I came for that. Visit come on, buddy. You're meeting the coach face to face. You might be meeting. Some of the players, the leadership group of that team might sometimes be asked to sit down with this potential UFA signing. I think I mean obviously, I think you're going there and not really getting a massive piffling of what that it's all about. You're just creating the illusion that you're falling in love with someone else. And so the team that you're with or the, the team, the think's going to get you might say, oh, he's going over there, and they might Jack up their price. Price. I can't see Lula Morello saying, hey, listen. The guy the guy was here for the weekend, you know. We'd better better sign him. He's really cool. He showed up. That does nothing for me. I don't I don't look. I don't see anything into that at all. But so your theory is, they are genuinely when they go to all the cities, they're genuinely interested in potentially signing with that team. They're generally interested in making money. You know that's what I do it. Larry Kelly who I know and. In not so great move. I had an agent when I was in radio and it was Larry Kelly. Okay, played hockey Larry Kelley bit last winter. Yeah. He's a great guy. He's a great guy. I went in there. You know, the ratings were good, and I went, and I said, we get an agent, you know, going to get an agent because the first time negotiated a deal in radio. I just tell I left a bunch of on the table. I went for lunch with the GM, and he said, okay. What, what's the deal, you know, I said, okay? Here me out. And my brother-in-law's HR. See what should I do? It goes just shut your mouth. Don't say anything, let them talk. Like this is some big high level deal. Right. And he said, what's up and I said, don't talk. They'll give him the wider. You tell me what's up? Right. And I said, he says, what's up, okay? Let's hear me out. Okay. Here's the volatile that, so I need this much money. Okay. I need this much money. He said, no problem. Leaned over shook and off. I went and I said, how much money, did I leave on the table? There know. Dear, so anyway, down the road, I Larry Kelly acted for me. And in, in one of my contracts that go, I I wouldn't fly in their Stevie. Okay. Like I was like I was rigging. Wayne Gretzky, you know, trying to negotiate a deal and fold. Larry, I listen, Larry, here's what I'd like to do. He said, this'll be good. Okay. You tell me what we should do gym, and I said, look here in there, even get a car and a and a golf club membership. All that. And then we got disconnected in on the phone, and I phoned back. Sorry. Something happened ever got disconnected. No, he didn't know deny hung up. I hung up the phone anyway. His his point was. You know, I'm not here, Jim. I'm not my job Jim as as an agent. Okay. My soul job. My number one job is to get you the most money, you can get. Okay. That's it. That's it. I'll get you the dull you go. Do whatever you want with your money, go, get a car, golf member. Do whatever you want, you know, and so these these agents saying, well, maybe you should go to the city or, or call them, of course, you're going to do that. You know, you're going to speak to them and say you're interested. Looks like a great town bub-bubba, blah. But, but the ages jobs that are Steve don't kid yourself is I'm going to get you as much money as I can period. That's not looking after putting in in therapy. I'm not babysitting. You, you know, I'm not here to give you lectures about if your party too much and all that ship. Okay. I'm here to get you so. Right. Man. I'd, I'd be, you know, maybe Alaska Kelly that. Next time I see him because I think these world wind free agency tours. These players go on. I think that because they do it, they end up with more money at the end of the day by doing them as opposed to just dealing with the team, you're interested in and playing hardball there. The more by going out and pretending to be interested in somebody else. Yeah. Now, now all that being said, I wanna make Larry out to be because ages have tough enough time, keeping their, their image. Larry's a wonderful guy. And when I did talk to him in those in those days, he was concerned about my future. You know. He said, so what are you gonna do long-term here, buddy? Let's you know this that the other thing. So he's got a heart. You know, for sure. But, but in the end, you know, why do guys get an agent Steve? What do they get an agent in the first place? It's to negotiate the deal. The money you know, it's not it's not need a father figure in my life, you know, maybe. It's none of that shit, you know. So anyway. And the reason I feel this way because basically it played it that way for me. When I went to almost work with you and Edmonton right in my heart hearts, I wanted to stay an auto. But I went out there and heard what you guys had to say for the job out there and is like, okay. That sounds fantastic. And then come back off and said, this would they're offering Edmonton and they go oh, well, all right. Then we'll pay that, too. And that was that because I was all set up your family and friends are here. And that's why ended up staying and not going out to Edmonton. I could I got you that job? If you wanted it, okay, I put my ASO. I said, here's our guy, then you totally disappointed. So I was game to go. It was just a case of. Okay. What do you guys have offer? And if I came back to auto and they said. Happy trails, Jimmy. Sure. But you know what? Because Albert is so set up for autism Jesus. I know you told me that sure is I hear all the time there's stuff going on here for autism. So anyways too late. Now it's too late now. Well you only lasted another year there. Anyway. Did. That's turf. So it worked out great for me. Yeah. Well, anyway, although we could have ganged up on that guy that you didn't like very much. Yeah. That guys speaking of nightmare, Steve. He's in there all the time, you know, that did I ever tell that story. I couldn't work with this guy hated me. I was I was shivering every time out to go into work, and it was so bad. This guy was just a freak you know, he spit in the face of a thirty he dismissed everything I said radio. I mean, you know, when you work in radio or you do show, you got a volley back and forth here. You know, you can't you can't. If you brought up a story, I don't know. I don't know anything about that. Well, at least the guy hanging is gone. And this guy did this all the time that was one of the things he did. He have the crazy is he was so. But he was very funny. But he was so off-side so crazy that we had to meet separately, the morning show. There were three of us on it. And this guy had to have as I said, this, this is not Smatt. This guys has got the program director freaking anyway, I went into the program one day and I said he'd come into meeting Steve, the PD would say, okay, we need to talk about this you go. I don't think so. That's ask them any walk out of the meeting and the peach, you never knew what to do. Anyway. I said, I'm going to go talk to them. And the program director said me, I wouldn't do that. And I said, I can tell I could tell in these meetings, he had with this guy that the guy was very vocal that he hated me. I said, I can I can smooth anything over saying, I'm just telling you don't go don't go up to his house and talk. And I said, no, I'm going up there. So anyway, I went up there. Right. And you let me in. And I was trying to charm them sitting on the table to make a long story. Short s- look at look at buddy, we can't you can't be dismissing the shit all that. And we got nothing. If you keep doing the next thing, Steve, I look up, and he is coming across the dining room table. He stepped up onto a chair jumped and flew across the dining room table like a fucking lemur, and started to choke me out. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Tact me attack me, that'd be down on the floor, and it was choking me is shot up. I don't know. I don't know what you did to someone to get a job in radio. But you're the worst piece of. And I was like crying, you know, get my car and just shaking, and I phone the PD in the answers goes a long ago. It's me. He goes you went up there. Did you? I told you to go. Ticking time bomb. This guy is that's. Ticking time bomb ticking time bomb. Yup. The stuff you said anything there was that offensive through that process? But you know what it is? And you see these guys in society all the time, where they're completely insecure. They see somebody come in your case he recognizes the talent. And he's cutting my grass and I've got a defend my turf, and he was totally threatened from you buy you from day one. Yup. First time first time I got invited into to jump on the radio was in oughta with Al Davis, and he was at a dinner, and I was, I was roasted Brian kill rate and then Davis said, we want to jump on the radio. Now got back up a bit Tom. Donnelly, my, my buddy was, was instrumental in Saint can get this radio. And when he's come on in tomorrow, and you're going to sit in with I forget the guy's name, actually who was at Ottawa sports radio. The morning host. And this guy wasn't sure what was up I could tell exactly what you're saying. And I went in the guy said, okay, this is Jim Giral. And he said, Jimmy, what, what, what would you like to talk about? So as a joke, as a joke, I said, what are your favorite sports? And, and I said, well, there's I got my top three for sure curling rodeo and squash. You know and. As the sideways, you know, he went sideways and in a good way or bad way. Well, he just he just didn't. You know he didn't he didn't laugh. There's obvious points. You know that are. No. I, I tend to think I know what kind of funny or what isn't there? What should be? And he just totally dismissed. And I said, I don't want to do this. This is absolutely no fun. I gotta give credit to JR. So I went back in the next day with JR and, and he was fantastic. You know, he, he got that I was new Tirol and radio did know anything about it, and he was like, we got this guy knows. And I was perked up. You know. So it makes a huge difference, exent huge different. So yes, it's bit of tight rope right here. Just if you have the wrong guy that you're working with, or even if you just, you know out for beers with another person, you just you hit it off. Or you don't hit it off the person's willing to listen or they're not willing to listen or build on what you've just said or not do that. And so it ends up almost like playing ping pong with yourself when you have someone you're trying to have a conversation with and be entertaining to the masses becomes design. Astra sometimes. But if you get the right guy in there could be magic. Yeah. Clare Drake, who was the equivalent of Brian kill what the Ottawa sixty seven's Clare Drake. Was unbelievable coach for the university of L Berta. Golden bears longtime coach many, many. He just died. But he was in fact, you've been around so long he coached my father in law, who's now over eighty years old, and I remember going into that dressing room and he was the guy who had a sign on the wall. I think he was the guy who said it big poster that says, it's amazing what we can accomplish if nobody cares. Who gets the credit right? And I said, that's, that's the smartest advice ever for guys on sports. Obviously, it was a, you know in the locker room of the hockey team. But when you think about jobs and all this other stuff and work in family and all sorts of stuff that, it, it made a ton of sense. Dikla radio. You know this story, who cares about the interview who let's just do that. We're in this together. Right. Yeah. Who cares about who gets the credit here on the Steve, Warne project? Any final thoughts today? We all. Okay. Another article radio is knowing how to end the show. All right. C. Let's get outta here. And I hope he recorded these, these are funny beds. When we're when these massive do you have any final thoughts? Thoughts in that show. What do you how do you want for me? Yeah. You give yours. I give your files. Okay, steve. I'm outta here.
