"Along the coast and bay the inland highs nineties up to the low one hundreds this afternoon highs will range from ninety eight to one hundred three degrees in the Sacramento Valley Sacramento site today one oh three a cooling trend along the coast begins tomorrow from NPR news it's All Things Considered I'm Mary Louise Kelly in Atlanta and I'm Sarah McCammon in Washington the White Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd snack for nearly nine minutes is now facing a more serious charge Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is charging Derek schaffen with second degree murder and the other three officers at the scene have been charged with aiding and abetting murder the announcement comes after more than a week of nationwide civil unrest over Floyd's killing NPR's Adrian Florido has been following developments and joins me now hi Adrian hi Sarah so I mean this is a major development what do we know well everything we've learned we've learned in the last half hour or so of the Attorney General at Keith Ellison is from Minnesota is speaking right now to announce these charges and get more details about them for justice and protect what you sign sure so hard to do I now ask for continued patience this case continues to be under investigation we will not be able to say I am much publicly about the investigation so sept we encourage the first new charge either he's clearly a sermon a live press conference we are monitoring mining it as we speak the first new charge that yeah his announces against Derek a shaman he is the police officer in that now famous video George points arrest who can be seen pinning falling to the ground with his knee is Floyd thanks for his life last week county prosecutors charge job and with third degree murder and manslaughter that today Ellison upgraded that murder charge to murder in the second degree and for the other three officers involved in the arrest who had not been charged until today they have now been charged and an arrest warrant has been issued for them they have been charged with aiding and abetting second degree murder and also with aiding and abetting a manslaughter and a friend what do these new charges against his officers mean how difficult will it be for prosecutors to get convictions what project shot in a second degree murder charges significantly more serious than a third degree charge the original charge carries a sentence of up to twenty five years in prison the second degree charge second degree murder charge carries a maximum prison term of four years for the other three officers a conviction on aiding and abetting second degree murder but also carry a maximum term of four years in terms of actually convicting these these former officers Attorney General two thousand has always been very candid about the fact that winning convictions against police officers is difficult and what we know from talking to experts is that these upgraded charges will probably make prosecutor's job even even more challenging we are waiting for details from the twenty general on on sort of strategy for prosecuting but that's what we know so far and Adrian the announcement of these charges came not long after George Floyd's family visited the site where he was killed how are they reacting to this news they're pleased their attorney Ben Crump issued a statement earlier today saying that this is a good first step that it is bringing some peace to George for his family they do not believe that these charges are enough speaking on television earlier today but Jim comp actually said that they think that that this charge against their shopping should be upgraded to first degree murder charge and so pressure continues to build on the Attorney General to do that at Ben Crump the attorney said that they that the family had heard from the attorney general the investigation will continue as we just heard the Attorney General saying on during his during his remarks and and and the the attorney for the family says that they've been informed by the attorney general's office that if the evidence that takes them there they will upgrade of that upgrade those charges we haven't heard that from the agent directly but that's the dear families attorneys say that's NPR's Adrian Florido in Minneapolis thank you so much Adrian thanks to two Louisville Kentucky now it has also been a center of protest asked after police there killed a local woman named Brianna Taylor she was an EMT shot while she was sleeping in her own apartment as officers executed a no knock warrant back in March now at the National Guard state troopers and local police have come out in force earlier this week a man named David McEntee was shot and killed while he was barbecuing for a crown we'll hear
