"Threat with the ball at his feet and lethal with his head. A unique ability to play make from the center forward position, unlike many that we've seen here in CONCACAF. His play was infectious. He became an immediate fan favorite. The man had it all. Unfortunately, sometimes as a footballer, the game can be taken away from you. November 29th, 2020. Wolves versus Arsenal, a play that will forever change Raul Jimenez's life. The clash of heads with Brazilian defender David Luiz. And like that, everything was different. Many feared Raul Jimenez would never make his way back to being on the field. 200 days later, he proved everybody wrong. At 32 years of age, he will look for a second opportunity, hopefully in Europe. I'd like to remember Raul Jimenez not as the player that left Wolves, but the player he showed us he could be. Even if it was for a brief moment, he showed us not only that he belonged, but he showed us that he was among the elite. So an affectionate salute to Raul Jimenez and whatever comes next. Welcome to Drop the Bag, your ultimate sports betting guide. Whether you're a fan of Liga Mekis, MLS, or any other competition, Vamos has you covered. All right, all right, all right. It's la final, the final. Liga Mekis, a two legged affair. Nobody expected Chivas, a perennial ninth over the last eight years. That is their average. With that, we're going to wrap it up for today. Velko Panovich to make it to the final, and certainly nobody expected Tigres. Three coaching changes this season bounced from the CONCAP Champions League in the semifinal game in humiliating fashion, and yet here they are. A team that I said has the muscle memory of a champion. So let's raise a Bud Light to both of them, the underdogs, if you will. And it's a rematch. Chivas de Guadalajara. They emerged as winners of the Liga Mekis finals in 2017. They defeated Mike Tigres. This is a very difficult one to predict. And I will tell you why. Tigres is very Jekyll and Hyde, whether they're playing at home or away all season. They've been the team that you cannot trust. But lately, in playoffs led by Sebastian Córdova, the young, talented Mexican international, the midfielder has five goals in his last five Ligia games, five goals in the playoffs in five games. He's been an absolute monster, easily the best player today left in this competition. But they're going up against a team that defensively has just found their form. Only five goals against in the last eight games. I wanted to talk about Antonio El Pollo Briseño, a Mexican player who was nowhere near Chivas's starting lineup, nowhere near the Mexican national team. Maybe he should be on both. Since he started, Chivas is great. I dubbed him the Mexican Rüdiger. That's right, the Mexican Antonio Rüdiger. That's who he is today. This man is a defensive wall. But I'm going against Chivas in this one. If Tigres has any chance of winning this series, they'll take advantage of being that home team again, like they have all playoff. And Tigres straight money line over Chivas pays plus one hundred. So I'm taking Tigres in leg one at home over Chivas. That's plus one hundred. All right, game two. We're heading to the German Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund versus Mainz. This has title consequences for Giovanni Reyna and Dortmund. They win their champions that easy. All they have to do is beat Mainz easier said than done. It'll be the first time that a team not named Bayern Munich wins. And I don't even know how long. That's the domination of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. So we wish Giovanni Reyna and Dortmund well. But I'm taking the both teams to score at minus one forty. Dortmund's a juggernaut offensively. Mainz will get their goal. I don't know who will win. Dortmund has won each of its last 11 Bundesliga matches at home. Eleven. They've won them all. And the overmarket of two and a half goals has hit in each of the last 12 games. And the both teams to score market has hit in seven of the last eight. So I feel pretty good about this bet. Both teams to score at minus one forty. I hope it is Dortmund. I hope it is Giovanni Reyna. The US men's national team pool needs something. They need a silver lining in this abysmal Yanks abroad season. That would be a cherry on top for Dortmund in their campaign. And a nice little feather on the cap for Giovanni Reyna. All righty. There's trouble in Toronto. Let's head to Major League Soccer. Toronto FC playing against DC United. They played each other in the very first game. They come from behind victory for DC United. And that's when it started going downhill for Toronto. Since then, Toronto's abysmal. Not only are they bad, there's a bunch of injuries. Like almost 10 players are injured. Quality players like Jonathan Osorio reports of Lorenzo Insigna not being on board. Michael Bradley still injured. He was just in Europe about to be operated on that hamstring. There's a lot going on in Toronto. Not all as well. One of their best players since he got there. The Italian Federico Bernadeschi is speaking out against the tactical plan of Toronto FC, a direct shot at Bob Bradley. Knowing Bob, he will not take kind to that. I don't know if this one of these loss in translation type of things, but something is going on in Toronto. We need to keep an eye on they play DC United in Toronto. I'm going to take the money line draw here. OK, it pays plus 230. I know that's very easy to say, but plus 230 is a sweet little payout. And each of the last three MLS night games at BMO Field in Toronto between DC United and Toronto have resulted in a regular time draw. A plus 230 in the way Toronto is playing, just trying to hold on with the DC United team that doesn't really convince me. Not that I'm not high on Wayne Rooney and what he's done, but I'm still not completely convinced. I'll take the plus 230 draw, but keep your eye on what's going on in Toronto. But I like the plus 230. So let's go with that. All right. So if you'd like to parlay all those three bets, you place ten dollars, a ten dollar bet for a three game parlay. That payout is plus nine hundred and ninety seven. That's a total of one

"Youth team members, physiotherapy rooms, three gymnasiums and the fame Benfica lab, state of the art sports science and data facility that presented such a revolutionary link between the technical and medical staff, the my Everton, tried to poach its architect Bruno Mendes in 2018, only for their project to crumble within 18 months due to the lack of ideological alignment who would have thought, but back to Benfica, whose youth production has been a marvel in the 20th and 21st century. The Benfica beast squad bridges the gap between academy and first team, overflowing with players schooled in technical acumen and life skills. First league title following inauguration at Benfica campus came in 2010. That fresh from the academy lineup. You talked about some of them and held dean Maria. Fabio conchal, David Luiz, and within a season of the title, first two were sold to Real Madrid for close to $75 million, David Luiz arrived at Chelsea for 27 million and Benfica. It's known as a place of opportunity for youngsters for Lisbon locals and far off talents alike, Rory, what makes it unique. What differentiates what goes on at the Benfica campus for the likes of axes that to comps or Barcelona's la masia and why is it so bloody profitable? To be honest, probably not that much. I'm always slightly reticent to say that any of these clubs has got a magic formula. I think what they all have in Barcelona's maybe has dried up a little bit recently. For different reasons. But certainly what I had in Benfica have is they will have loads of talented coaches. They have state of the art equipment. They have access to data. They have kind of an ability to trawl for talent from a young age. They obviously have an eye for a player and they know how to develop them. And all of that stuff is real and it's important and they all deserve credit for it. But I think ultimately what they have is a pathway. And that's you mentioned about Everton. You can hire the guy who built the Bedford academy, just as you can hire the guy who runs the toms in Amsterdam. But if your first team is filled with 32 year olds because you're terrified of giving kids a chance. Then you will never produce a player. Whereas what Benfica have done and, as you say, the B team two and its extent is the bridge. Benfica have kind of made it their business to allow those players to flourish. Whether they are signed as 19 or 20 year olds from South America or whether they are homegrown kids, you've come through Seychelles. That there is an awareness and a desire to promote those kids, those young players. As quickly as possible, not too fast, you don't want 14 year olds in the first team, but they're not looking to block pathways by and this is the fundamental change from I guess the early 90s is that you're not blocking pathways by thinking, do you know what? We just need a 30 year old to sit there for a little bit because that right back's not ready. Bed feet about themselves to make the right back ready at 18 or 19 so that they can slot into the team when they're required. And they have for the time being and there's certainly no sign of as is the case with iOS. There's no sign of it drying up anytime soon. Benfica have got this remarkable production line quality where they sell Enzo Fernández in January and partly to necessity, but they don't replace him because they think what we've got the players here already. There will be there will be somebody else within the squad who can fulfill that position for the time being or who might flourish in his absence, and I think Benfica, like iax, like one or two others around Europe, that is the secret and it's not really a secret. It's not hard. It's a trout fall. Yeah, but you've got to let the trout swim. And the problem that other clubs have, particularly in England, is no one's prepared to let them swim, so you get all these staff being drafted in by the super clubs. But no one ever lets the players play. The chances are if you've got a 1718 year old who you think is really good, the chances are they will be good enough if you give them a chance. What Benfica do is do you have players a chance? Football playing trout to a listening. Oh, Benfica is your spot, but within the Benfica faithful. There is a growing feeling that there could be more. And this is a team who are so passionately followed. A true European force, but if only in a place could stop getting picked off and the money was invested more ambitiously and to more than boats named lucky me, but this is the risk of getting into bed with a super agent. There's more to this story because that's exactly what Benfica have done with Jorge Mendes. Portugal's four most broker of football power, a gent whose own life story is quite fantastical, essentially grew his business from humble origins. He had a beach bar and a DJ gig, and he turned it somehow into one of the global games, super agency, named guest the foot, and there's original strategy in 1996, was to be a near ubiquitous presence amongst small and medium sized clubs across Portugal, establishing systems of power over their youth products, brokering deals, contracts, and relationships as his players then moved abroad. He's a reason that the feast for Benfica players have climbed year on year to astronomical levels a man who serves as a gatekeeper of Portuguese transfers have Benfica's ten highest grossing transfers there is an 8 with direct Mendes clients and you can bet almost any high value deal coming or going from Portugal is mediated by Mendes for a cut. There'll be more than one lucky me yacht believe me and that story but Rory and tangle this system for us because Jorge meant theirs is undeniably an important part of the ecosystem of Portuguese talent really the puppet master is track record is growing the demand from buyers, the feces generates, help grew the supply for sellers, but the talent siphon that he creates also prevents these players from reaching their true potential in Portugal. Essentially uses Benfica as a staging ground, a means to his agency's own ends, as he does, I should say with other clubs like Braga and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, is a balance to be found for Benfica with him in the picture. Yeah, I guess what Mendes would say and certainly to be honest, I think what people at Benfica would tell speaking to someone at Benfica today and there their view is that the economic reality is that they're going to have to sell players that players will not will not be persuaded to stay at Benfica because they can't pay the wages that are on offer in England and with the Spanish bid two and maybe one or two others PSG may be. In fact, PSG definitely. They are not traditionally expected to win the champions lead, although I would suggest that if you're aiming life is to play Champions League football, which most footballers say that it is, you might as well do it for Benfica, just they're there every single year. And if you stay, you'll get further in the competition. So they would, I think they would say, look, even without Mendes, the likelihood is the reality will be the same. The players would leave and you'd get to 2021 and Benfica would cash in. The difference I think is that it's Mendes who controls the timing. He often controls the direction of travel of the transfer, he brings in the clients, he will cherry pick where the players are going in terms of their personal career progression, which I think is the

"What the drenched melodrama of the hymn also speaks to is the aspect of Benfica that's often made it a soap opera of shady backroom deals, boardroom politics, on the hills of lifting his boyhood club to the 1994 title, Rui Costa, then he's just 22 departed to Fiorentina in Italy, then a massive team in Europe's juggernaut league of the era, the prodigal son reduced the sheer mate weight for the massive debt, the club had fallen into. What followed was a period of decline marked by an 11 year league title drought overseen by controversial president zhao Vallejo vado. And Rory, can you tell us a little bit about the tenuous position in which Benfica found itself at the turn of the century, the hurt of losing Rui Costa, the transition to a publicly traded company to further relieve the debt they had accrued. The thing with Benfica is that they are, as you say, one of Portugal's bid three. But they're also effectively a political institution. They have a massive kind of power base within Portugal. They are, it's probably too much to say they can swing elections, but they're a massive public body. What is a sense? They are very small. I think formally in people or something it's not. It's not a vast place to put Portugal and you have this huge club that is one of the big three, but it's certainly better than sporting and on a par with Porto plus it's in the capital. And that increases the pressure to compete to try and to try and maintain a certain status within Portuguese football within European football. And it attracts people who are not necessarily there, they've got some grand sporting plan, but more because they want the status that comes with being with being part of Benfica with being the guy who runs Benfica. It's one of the most powerful positions in Portugal effects of late. And amazingly, those people aren't always. That nice. It's a standard I know. It's really hard to believe. So I think they had to, if you were to decide to analyze it, you'd maybe say that there was a point around the turn of the millennium where Benfica had to accept that the old world that they once knew had gone. And they had to find a way to function in the new world. And that involved between a publicly traded company, but it also may be encouraged them to look for homegrown players more ruby crossers rather than signing aging and quite expensive stars from elsewhere, which was what they've done it certainly in the early 1990s. And not always stars, they took some fairly terrible players from England. In the early in the sort of 92 93 period, Benfica was effectively what Galatasaray would become ten or 15 years later, it was where you went to get a big payday. And in the first decade of the 21st century, benefited turned their identity on its head really, they accepted that they were a place that players came from rather than went to. They invested heavily in their academy, which had always been productive at always had an ability to churn out styles, but it became essentially an industrial production line. And increasingly in recent years, they have specialized in finding players from South America, Brazil to an extent. There's obviously a language connection between Benfica and Brazil between Portugal and Brazil. But also Argentina. I remember going to the lose in I'm going to say 2009 Rodgers to watch the mighty toffees. Play in the Europa League. This happened their list as this is not sci-fi, this really happened. Everton shared a pitch with Benfica and dropped dismantled in one of the most compelling displays of attacking football I've ever seen. Benfica was superb that night. But you had on that pitch, David Luiz, played as a defensive midfielder. You had angel Di Maria as a 20 year old winger. I think Javier saviola was there. They had all these players. This wonderful attacking team that was testament really to what Ben fitted started doing, which was becoming the first stop off for players coming out of South America or place coming out of Portugal before they went on to the major leagues of Western Europe. All that talent repelled with ease by the true great Tony hibbert, but talking about British great Graham soon as Scottish firebrand player turned combustible coach to even more feisty broadcaster of famously agreeable opinion had a brief stint as Benfica manager in those years. He was dismissed by valet as a vado in 1999 after just a year and a half in the job. He came out firing at the president saying that he lies when he looks you in the eyes, be careful this man is dangerous and just over a year later. Was arrested. Who would have thought charged with embezzling money from the transfer of sunes rushing goalkeeper, Sergei ab chilikov, used the London cash to buy a yacht, which was named, and I crap you not dear listeners. The lucky me. What in bessler would call would call our yacht lucky me just to try and throw investors off the trail, but in terms of infrastructure, it's got to be said. Valeo Vasa Verde left behind several valuable tools for his eventual successor, Louis Philippe Vieira to try and leverage foremost among them the development of the Benfica campus, the club sprawling youth academy, opened in 2006, and Louis Philippe Vieira immediately zeroed in on that incredible center, made it the centerpiece of his strategy to propel the club back to the top. This campus, both 9 fields, both natural and artificial,

They went to David Luiz the steakhouse and six of them ate together at 8th and Louise. They come back one of them test positive that thing they test them again twice Monday morning. He tested positive twice more. There are told you're out of the tournament you guys are out because the contact tracing you're out of the tournament off the refs are pissed because they feel like hey, you know what the rooms weren't ready. The food wasn't ready. And again the rule was going to be once you get in the hotel. You're basically stuck in the hotel and not you're working again. That's it. Now again, they hadn't actually gone in checked in the hotel, but I think it's a combination of both both fall in a way, right? I think the rooms obviously should have been dead.
