"Of a whole with like his entire filmography and a really weird way. This movie i think you can see a direct line. I think the clearest connection is probably between this and go story but he has this tendency to work within these frameworks of mythology. But he brings that sort of humanizing element to ryan like. You said this movie is for all intents and purposes medieval john hughes movie. This is this is about this guy's coming of age. Learning not to be a cad as much as it is about anything whereas in the text like. He's not really fleshed out. He doesn't seem all that human you know he does make a few mistakes or errors in judgment here and there but he's not like all that compelling he's just sort of a mythical figure conic figure but if you if you look at his movies going back to austin you mentioned bodies saints something like old man and the gun. Those are very much movies about kind of humanizing. That trope of either the gentleman bandit or the lovers on the run and all of his movies have this tendency to take like a springboard either from folklore or mythology or with a ghost story just the framework of the the tradition of ghost stories themselves and figuring out a way to draw some humanity out of these characters that have become like very state or rigid or archetypal within these sub genres. And i do think in this movie specifically you you do see. He'll a lot of a lot of really interesting. Growth every single challenge along along the way for dev patel you you just you pull a little bit more humanity out of him and you if not if you don't see him change that drastically you see the will to change forming behind. His is that he's like he's experiencing the hardships of life for the time. He's being punished for his hubris as he's having to like take shelter on a cliffside in the rain and forage for mushrooms that may or may not cause him to hallucinate..

"What do you think. What do i think about what you just said No just like the stuff overall. Yeah my answer is yes no. I think he just took a bong rip. And he kinda zoned out. I i take all of these podcasts. I just distracted myself. Because i was trying to find a to whom we should attribute that really thoughtful contribution to his mind wandered. Yeah i gotta i gotta take through osmosis. He got a little faded so so do we think then that this is a morality tale right like is that essentially not not in just the arthur inform which clearly it would be david lowery and if so is david lowery trying to subvert a lot of these more Kind of old fashioned tales. I mean i hesitate to use the term but i guess we could patriarchal stories And that he's kind of offering us something else which is also what. I mentioned that there is a post credits scene where a young girl finds the king's crown and places it on her head. So is there something also about us dealing with the Established power relations of kind of sexual difference for for me. The question. you just posed to us isn't rally tale. Was was what i meant when i really want to investigate the final line of the movie because to me it would be really cool if he actually did. Just go off your head and then he literally seem offhand. What is the lesson there that that don't try to show off or else you know. Here's the the consequences are nature is going to beat your ass basically Or off you can chew. It's like a super cynical ending or is it kind of how raymond had phrase it. That's like an this was a basically a big test you know and now go on and live this fruitful life And the fact that they the fact that they cut before you really know even though i guess the consensus is that he does. That said it's just you know. He just hits them with his finger. I think that it is leaving it to little open to interpretation about you know and whatnot and so yeah like like i. I liked the just epic nature of the whole presentation of the story. And apparently i. I think this movie does work way better if you have read the stuff apparently because it in terms of grasping the the narrative more because i i certainly was just kind of left absorbing this different time and place that they were putting me in into the movie and way less at the end going. Okay now let's dissect. All that meant is kind of how that was less of my enjoyment of the movie going. And wow okay. I'm really like on board with that You know exactly what's going on at the moment. They're literally on giants for like two minutes all this other and you're like well i didn't really matter those sally got somewhere but the giants come from other guy. There's this amazing tracking shot when he first leaves camelot. And he's just walking for a minute..

"In the reason that he goes on his like anti woman rant is because throughout the throughout like the third chapter. Which is the longest chapter of the book The the lady of the house keeps kind of similar to the movie. She she keeps trying to seduce. Go wayne he keeps rebuffing. Her advances and it is very explicitly like tied into that notion of you know. He is in much the same way that he has been sent to. I don't necessarily know if it's if it's explicitly disperse away towards greatness. But he's he is sent to test go wayne and then he ends up. Sending the lady of the house to test. Go wayne is right. Turn and so. There's like a handful of puppet masters going down the line here. And as yeah as he reveals at the end he says you know like the that you kept the skurdal and you only exchange the kisses that were given to you in my household and things like that so i do think there's there is in that very like misogynist old world view. Yeah you're right it may. They may be explicitly tying the the the temptation that's associated with like femininity to i don't i don't necessarily know that the the book portrays him as like a satanic figure But i guess. I guess in some ways. Nature is regularly equated to. Yeah well not just the feminine but just like freedom and shamelessness and stuff like you know the the garden of eden designed to be sort of a heavenly respite ends up becoming like an icon of just temptation lust or whatever So yeah it's I mean that that's definitely something. I hadn't fully considered at the time. But that's a good point. I m to me. The way i took those seems you're talking about the the sex and whatnot. It's like this movie. Glorified coming of age movie right where you know. It's the loss of innocence. you know. stand by me. He they have to go this crazy adventure to To to at some point realize oh this is what life's about. It's not like you know he's her. He's heard all the fairy tales and whatever or the stories of nights his whole life and he but and here he is older and he's just you know having casual sex getting fucked up and just doesn't care about anything and and he needs honor He needs to become these great stories. He's he's heard about and so then he has to go on one big adventure himself so to me. That's where like the the sex theme kind of just the the. Yeah that's where that comes from. Could we say could we say that this is also about him than overcoming or confronting the temptations..

"The mask looking very similar to how listen everybody. He's the green man agreed. I did you did you. Pre-game for this movie the same way you pregame for the podcast ryan. Sorry to cut you off. Austin this had just had heard my throat is the green. His nature coming in bursting in That is herbal nature. Asserting its dominance into the techno waves of of this podcast but yeah so you've got the green man who is kind of like nature right. The embodiment of nature and dubbed like symbolizes rebirth in growth and fecundity and things like that right infertility. And so. there's an interesting discussion going on in the live. Chat right now. I just wanna shout out. Nicolette and andrea. Were talking about So nicolas says. I thought the religious illusions were telling a myth of britain equating nature to paganism and then Andrea was saying. Yeah like the talking fox. In so i thought also of anti christ as soon as i saw the talk and fox and one of the things. That's interesting is in the modern era. We kind of view nature as a place of Serenity a place that is uncorrupted right a place that is outside of the hustle and bustle of the city. But in the middle ages and in the kind of ancient mythologies nature was a place of death. It was terrifying. It was scary as fuck right and so a film. Like anti christ kind of really leans into that view rather than the sort of like modern post enlightenment view of nature as being a place for like boy joie fantasies to go and retreat in recline. And enjoy the walden story or something like that right and rather what you get in fucking auntie christ you gotta talking. Fox's says chaos reigns right and as soon as this fucking fox opened his mouth and started talking. I kind of immediately thought. I was like okay. So i don't know if that was a direct reference or Some sort of inter textual reference to anti christ..

"Where morgan la is casting. The spell and arthur is kind of giving his speech arthur's. Crown is literally designed to make him look like a religious icon with like the round halo behind his head in while. Morgan is like bones crying and casting these spells and stuff a lot of the time. They're edited in framed like the pacing is such that they're moving in the same direction. Their bodies are like in the same sort of momentum across the frame at the same pace. And they're they're like very clearly. He's sort of tying these sort of rituals together in a way that i i found very interesting and i think it's i think it's very subtle but very much intentional. Sort of visual commentary that he makes out the film even as you get towards the green chapel and go wayne is seeing like the celtic cross that is decaying and being consumed by nature. And there's the there's all kinds of stuff like that throughout the film even like the inclusion of saint winifred in this film which isn't a part of the text but if you know anything about like Christian mythology do you. Do you know the story of saint winifred. So i'll try to keep us briefed. But i think it is an interesting tangent so i used. I was raised catholic. I used to be a catholic youth minister. And i'm still of obsessed with christian mythology just because so much of it is like extraordinarily ghastly and a lot of it just amounts to just straight up ghost stories and the story of saint winifred is fucking medal as hell so she was this young welsh woman who was stricken with divine inspiration. At least as i recall she was going to join a nunnery and one of her. It was her. I don't know if they were together. I i can't remember exactly but a boyfriend or a suitor of hers came in lopped her head off because he didn't take kindly to the notion of her abstaining from their relationship to give herself to god and her head falls off her body and when it hits the ground it creates this spring and then her i think it was her uncle her father went and grabbed the head off the ground and replaced it on her body and brought her back to life so she was canonized saint as a martyr and to this day. The like the well the saint winifred. Well i think it was a it was called like holy well Or it's in. It's in a place in wales called holy well in for a while the the the water fountain or the water source was called holyhead and to this day it still seen as like a pilgrimage site. It's you know it's like the the lords of wales it's referred to because of the healing waters and that whole sequence. Is this great moment of like these two legends sort of crossing paths and go wayne becoming the one who retrieves her head rather than her uncle and i really really like the the the the that.

"A dead man. The either way you'll either have a head or you won't but if you don't go through with this if you're a man of courage and a man of honor and you don't stand by your word than what is your life really worth and so i think he even said explicitly in one interview. He was like. I don't know. I think dwayne gets his head cut off. But it's like what matters is that he commits to and that is his hero's journey but know of course he doesn't show that so in your in your mind he does. He what happens in the book happens he just leaves and they have a little laugh and then he becomes as hero in in the v. I think My interpretation at least when i saw was that he was going to let him off with just that little joke. But david david lowry kind of like i said he says otherwise in interviews but i mean the audience owns this movie as much as david lowery does and i think if your interpretation of it coming away is that you know go wayne grew as a person and he learned his lesson t. He's now going to be given the gift of an honorable life than i think. That's a totally valid interpretation. The the the thing that i saw the whole ending where he his life flashes before his is about what would happen. I seen that before. I in a movie. I think it's price as well. Oh yeah yeah. The twenty fifth hour. That lasted of christ. Does that. I want to say a recent record. Maury episode did that. I am in another recent movie anyway. It's a cool. i like. The last temptation is an interesting revenue. Then it's almost as though he's being sacrificial in continuing to go through with it because remember when jesus on the cross to he does cry. Oh my god my god. Why have you forsaken me and g k chesterton and famously sloppily. Jack has come run with this and said you know. Even for a moment god himself becomes an atheist right and so many kind of thinkers have lingered over this moment when jesus is screaming on the cross like what could that mean. Why are the author's writing it in this way like what is going on. Why would this this man of quote like perfect faith entrust all of a sudden have moments of doubt. So there's something interesting about that. Potentially with wayne too because i know that a lot of thinkers lewis and tolkien and other medieval lists and i actually had a phone conversation with a friend of mine. Who's a medieval scholar. We were chatting about some of the figures here like who is who. Obviously this is written in a very sort of a period of christendom so these illusions are going to be intentional and probably quite heavy at times and if they do have this conversation about women everyone talking about from eve all the way through bethsheba their themes of like sex sexual temptation which would kind of lead you down a particular path about sticking with kind of like your manhood and bravery and honour and things like that and then of course you could potentially think of the green man as being like a serpent in the garden right. The green knight is laying down a challenge. Like what are you going to do here..

"Let's start off. Let's start at the end will start at the end. What does the green knight me now off with your head. does he. stand up and chop off. Godwin's head or was he cheekily just running his finger across his neck saying okay. That is my return blow to you. And because of your bravery you have now passed the test because you've mastered the test and you've been rewarded. What else is going on here. What do you think what is your interpretation of this ending. And what are people saying on the interwebs to the will. Those were my two interpretations was either you with all this and yeah. I'm about to chop your head off. You know but dr a choice to not show that part so why. Why wouldn't you show that. That's you know my first reputation and secondary is what you just said is that was it and then he just kind of making a joke. Which is bizarre. Seen the green. I joke the whole time Well what i what. Raymond what do you think think. Yeah because i need you to show me these meanings. Well no i was just gonna say that while we maybe haven't seen him joke throughout the film at the very beginning of it he says quite pointedly this is a game and then arthur reminds go wayne of that when he's handing over excalibur he says don't don't forget that this is just a game and it's going that takes things too far. He's the one who decides he's going to step up. He's gonna impress he wants to show. She wants to show off. He wants to be bold and brave and courageous and just snip. This thing in the bud slices the dude's head off in the the night even says at the outset be it a strike to the knacker a nick on the cheek or whatever. His wording is the implication being if if you are courageous enough to step up and just be playful with me then. I'm not going to kill you a year from now i'll just. I'll just give you a nick on the cheek. And so if bent down in wayne walked over and just kinda like kicked him with his foot and then they laughed and had like a little chuckle. Then that would have been a very different year. Spent in prepa and but doesn't king arthur. Which by the way. You've already showed me some meeting awesome. Because i'm an idiot. And i went the whole movie not even realizing that that was king. Arthur okay. yeah it makes perfect sense anyway But when but doesn't he say the line about hey. This is just the game after. He's already decapitated the green knight. You know new. Isn't it when you go. Wayne is stepping into the circle. He he..

It is s. m. t. m. underscore p. o. d. s. mt 'em underscore o. D. also shots to chunky rivera. Who just said raymond is hot linked to recap So we're going to go into the recap real here. Quick here all right so i is it. Go wayne garwin our the hell. You say his name gwen. I'm gonna say tens of feast at his uncle king arthur's court. The king invites going to sit beside him and the to discuss what it means to be great at the same time. Gwynn's mother's performing magic ritual elsewhere now. At this time the green knight enters the kings core lays down a challenge. Basically says any night who who's able to land a blow on him will win his grain axe however one year later this night must meet the green knight at the green chapel so that he can return the favor with the exact same blow. Only go wayne stands up to accept the challenge now the green knight. Oddly enough does not fight back but instead lowers his head and wayne beheads him then moments later the green knight stands up picks up his head. Pretty nonchalantly then reminds grain of the deal and exits. Then we fast forward to a two quick year later one year later. Go wayne sets out to the green chapel to fulfill his end of the bargain. G- wayne's ambushed in the forest his access stolen but then he eventually comes across an abandoned cabin when where he's awakened when he sleeping by the ghost of winifred who asks him to fetch her head from nearby spring he goes and gets the head then he gets his axe back so then he continues on his way then. He reaches a castle near the grain chapel. This castles run by lord and the lord mistress. Who's making sexual advances at him. As this nods to the joseph story from the old testament adriano tell us what you think in the chat. She makes these sexual advances He's rebuffing them but then one morning going gives into her advances in exchange for the green girdle where he All over it. And i had somebody on twitter asking me. What's the deal with all the come. So i guess we can talk about that a little bit as well talk about the leading from the castle and he finally reaches the green chapel now when the green knight finally awakens from his little slumber. Gwen must decide whether he runs away in fear or does he follow through with his end of the bargain and if he lets the green knight return the blow and chop his head off at this time though. Dwayne has this vision of fleeing and returning home of becoming king then becoming a disgraced king and then ultimately losing his head one day then. He awakens from this vision. He removes the girdle and says that he is ready to accept his end of the deal. The green knight then praises him for his bravery. And then cheekily runs his finger across wayne's throat saying now off with your head end of film. Oh but wait. There's a post credits scene. What is this a fucking marvel film and in the post credits scene. There's a young girl who finds a king's crown and places at on her head. What could this possibly mean. I have no clue. But we're gonna talk about it on the other side of a quick little ad. Gotta give a shout out to skill share skill share. You know about them. We talk about him all the time. "I've heard of but i just haven't seen i haven't seen this bodies saying i haven't seen it goes story. You know In a ghost story if not wrong it was Was like beat up by the critics and stuff when it came out right but you necessarily but or maybe it was a huge bomb or something either way like like i. This movie made me want to go. See this guy's other stuff has clearly. He's had a crazy career is. I'm the bee's insane for what you call a young director. He has like twenty producing credits. Twenty-seven directing twenty-three writing credits fourteenth cinematography credits. And like you said and then thirty six editing credits been around the block. And i guess the only other movie haven't seen his is the pete's dragon rematch. I actually thought was pleasantly surprised. Saying how much. I kind of enjoyed that movie. Why why make that movie anyway. Long story short. I thought this movie was cool. And i maybe dragged a little bit in the in the middle. But they're so pretty look at it. I didn't give a shit. This was fun. And then the you always gotta go out with a bang with your movies. And i think that the the very last line of this movie with the green is going right off with your head spoilers. I'm sorry spoiler alert. Five podcast is all spoilers. The so this is one floor. Spoilers for a four thousand year old. It's not going to see titanic fourteen. Yeah that's part of the movie. I would like to get y'all's meaning of the most is the very very end of the movie. What is what are we supposed to take away from the film. And then what is. How do you interpret that line and anyway awesome. Would you think about the field. I really love your thoughts ryan. Yes so david. Lowery's been one of my favorite filmmakers ever since ain't them bodies saints came out Which i thought was a sort of nada. Marge almost too early malik Which which is you know. Days of having of all time and of course badlands is just one of the greatest films ever made and so it was very similar in that vein almost a bit derivative even but i kind of loved it so much that i was. I was kind of excusing. The fact that you could see a malik fingerprints all over it as they say great artists steal right And then i love to go story. So i came into this with kind of a lot of expectation in hope and things like that..

"A sense of both respect for the films themselves but a sense of irreverence to makes it fun in the release of the movies are always fun and obviously it goes story is not like a fund rip roaring movie. It's it's not green night. Some people call him. But it's not your typical fun movie but the illegals spun the release feels like an event in the same way that the avengers in game felt like an event. It's a different type of event. But they've advantaged it in a really unique. And i think like you know refreshing way because i love seeing elms like this treated as if they were events. It's so easy to just like this art house material. It's going to get a very distinguished art house released for very discerning clientele and then it will be available on blu ray in three months here. They're treating these movies whether it's the green knight or zola or the films that are coming up all they're treating them as if they were injuries. Films and getting people excited about them. Dandies single biggest in the middle later. Yeah and i mean maybe someday eight twenty four movie will make three hundred million but generally. They don't need to. They don't need to make that much money to be in equivocal success because the budgets are lower. And so. that's really exciting. I love your out with each film. A unique way to make that films existence in the world and event unto itself. That's it is funny because that is the comment that kind of bothers me someone who a massive competently fan but also like we. I mean we live for these types of the green ago story is east style movie movies like it really isn't it's like there's like. There's a lot you know in the grand scheme. There's like like eight or nine a year. But that's eight or nine out of two hundred fifty miles released in years with like you know prime and like you click one page and you'll see like there's a lot of movies out there superhero movies exactly Bought about go story about the release of a goat story. A did you have. Anyone had to be someone who had no idea what they're going into thinking about to go into a horror movie when they saw that movie. And then you see the reaction of it's it's it's haunting is very much not a horror with anyone just throwing never no. I never witnessed that myself. i did. People would send me photos of signs at movie theaters like type up and hang on the box upswing using a ghost or he's not a horror movie. You will not get your money back. Just be aware of what this is before you go into it and there were like a lot of different variations of like these people have sent me photos of it like at halloween. Walmart has a horror movie. Standi of volume. Dvd's and it goes stories there. And i'm like oh man. Someone's buying this for like their halloween party. Ghost movie and like there. I always hope you're like nine out of ten. People are going to be really disappointed and not make it past like minute. Twenty and then there's gonna be the one person who's like minds blown and that's the most exciting thing. The prayer or halloween party dresses like tiger king in tears. Slotched exactly who. I am what to see this movie. Those torn apart by family drops..

You gotta be gotta be pretty pleased. I am i. Oddly was disconnected from the release. Close shooting other movies. So we wrap that movie on friday And now i'm back home for the first time in like a year and just sort of like becoming aware that the green knight. Actually i went to the movies last night to see the suicide squad and i was like. Oh the green knights playing here. This is so strange. Because i was in production. I just sort of disconnected back. That was actually physically available for people to see and last night just walking past the theatre where was playing. I could step into this theater right now and go see it. That would be my movie playing there. How bizarre quick question on that. What is the coolest mon besides coast during the actual theaters accusing standi. Because i think seeing is standing of your movie has to be a massive death patel with a big acts in the middle of the theory. That has to be awesome right. That was the coolest until i saw. Photos of like giant buildings is banners hanging off of like call which. I don't know if they're in the us. But i saw. I saw lots of those in canada and that was that was daunting an awesome dan. That's awesome. I want to ask about what you said production-wise because the green knight i forget exactly what the.

"There's a lot of hype around it. Let it try to succeed in theaters so especially because disney. I think now has basically done the full shift away. Like they said jungle cruise whatever's less when they were doing in subtleties released and kind of like wbz just to hold out where they're saying. Yeah we're just gonna keep doing and see what happens so that i would feel pissed off us pressure because dune is more than almost any movie. I can think of one that just it needs to be watched a theater like a you absolutely have to the bottom line And lastly own wilson and michael. Keaton don't know anything about the. Mc you they don't understand. Owen wilson said. I kind of know about iron man. I've seen aquaman he swimming in jeans. No one can swim in jeans. That was my urges right with the kids. Malcolm and that is right one hundred percent. Sure michael keaton. I'm nodding along as they're explaining stuff to him. Nodding awa- about the multi-diverse amounting along like i know what the fuck they're talking about. You may as well be explaining quantum physics right now to me would just because vulture is in the sony spiderman universe. And then he's gonna be in the dc use multi verse as batman. So he's gonna have to be the final fucking now. I don't know don't understand you almost like that for some actors and actresses absolutely you. That's a better. Like for owen wilson to like not really care or know or whatever just to be. Oh and wilson is like endearing and with michael. Keaton is the same thing except with michael. Keaton is more just like a rough edge. Like whatever batman care. So i if it was somebody else if it was like a paul bbatni became disappointed right. Yeah like a younger guy whatever. Yeah but like almost any I love thinking of him as being his own world. I it's a luxury moro bay for other actors if they don't have to care or know about it. Sorry stadium. I loved owen wilson. Marlene me drew salient point. Is that the one early on me. Was that released two thousand six. The app rally around the classic anything else in news they can say. There's not a lot of news. That's the.

"Been buried and it's unclear who's been fighting who or why it's really remarkable image. Yeah and i love that actor so much. So he's so unusual or yoga. And i don't know i know he's got he's so good in so unnerving and every performance he seems to give But as interesting to think about that progression in the way that the film looks he don't have that kind of transformation in in excalibur pretty much the the the the world of excalibur looks. Looks like it does from start to finish no i. I think that's exactly wrong. Because they do we end. Yeah you balloons. During the golden age and then sergia everything. I just said yes. It's gonna pretend that didn't happen. That child bandits seen loved recalling them child bandits but it also kind of segues into and i think another one of the scenes in the green knight. That people are talking about a lot. Which is the sort of three sixty two skeleton corpse and back again. A very David lowery shots certainly evoked a ghost story for me and others. From from what i understand. But i think like if we're thinking about it in terms of connection about magic and paganism and christianity for that matter like there's some really interesting reading i think you can do into that moment In terms of like resurrection. Christ figure we talked about the last imitation of christ parallels in the ending their I think that That moment with the skeleton may be kind of sets up the ending to to a certain extent. But it's in the middle of a of a forest you know and there's there's death in life everywhere and there's there's there's resurrection in in you know with this idea of you know. The old way are the old magic leaving the beating. The land is christianity moves in like christianity. Didn't get rid of paganism. Just kinda like absorbs certain ideas for its for its own purposes. You know th that's how they get you at least if you're at a pagan and the fourteenth century or whatever you know right and some are degree night as something.

"It's so good to have you back on the podcast. How are you get back. I miss you guys yes Well we miss you too and more so busy with the site in bringing all the new people up to speed and you listeners. Have heard Vanessa armstrong on a recent episode of the show. And hopefully some some more than new folks will be peppered on an infield your episodes but as you've been busy behind the scenes as well So we've not had a lot of time to do things like water cooler episodes which we used to do pretty frequently and people could check in sort of hear what we've been watching and listening to and all that kind of stuff enjoying and i know one of the things that you've enjoyed very recently. Is this movie the green. So i wanted to tell people about this film in your thoughts about it. I feel like in just a few minutes. It will be hard to describe. I feel like the the green light is either a movie that is indescribable to me or one that i can go on for about for hours because it's just it's such a striking breathtaking sumptuous haunting movie that i adored wholeheartedly. It's my favorite movie. That i've seen this year at features a magnificent performance by death patel at the center as dewayne a Not yet night of roundtable. Who aspires the night of the roundtable. He's in this movie king arthur's nephew and to prove himself. He takes on the challenge. Lay down to him by the screen nights a Like sort of creature who comes in and challenges anyone from the roundtable during christmas to strike a blow against him which he will then strike back in return and go wayne cuts off this night's head the night of picks up his head and says one year and that is the beginning of our story. Not oiler at all. But i- david lowery is fast becoming one of my favorite working directors A ghost story is exquisite. And i really liked to his much more subdued. The old men in the gun which sort of swansong for robert redford as his his final acting role his onscreen role in it was. It's really fantastic speeds beautiful little Character study and the green knight is my favorite of lowery. So far it it goes even further with some of the themes that we've seen that hit him tackle before which is third sort of like the the religious relentless trudge through time and everything and is fantastic. I remember when we when annihilation was such a huge thing. And i remember you absolutely adored annihilation and i was of the few people who kind of luke warm towards it and i really really wanted to like it. I even saw it twice in theaters. The green knight is what i wanted annihilation to do to do to me is thoroughly transporting immersive. Just transformative film. I've i've at the same time. I'm not because it's all about the consuming power of nature and how it will creep absorbent outlive in that lasts all and also it's about how patel is very sexy. Oh man okay. Well well as i am. I mean if. I wasn't hype for this movie before i certainly am now. I was definitely high for this movie before but but yeah tell me a little bit about patel's performance here because like if you were to to stumble across film twitter over the past. I don't know years since this movie has been delayed a bunch of times. You'd probably find you wouldn't have to look too hard to find somebody thirsting for dev patel in this movie just sort of seems You know in in the the lead up to it actually coming out where people can actually watch it engage in a real way. It just sort of seems like a almost like a meam factory so you know having actually seen the movie itself are people in for something a little bit deeper than than what the the twitter reaction might sort of portend or whatever. Yeah i mean. I think david lowery leans into debt patel as film twitter hearthrob but in a way. That's very interesting and thematically rich because the move poem itself that The green light is based off of is very It's has it's loaded with all this erotic subtext and the film in in returns warships dev patel's body in a way that's really interesting and really really satisfying for fans of dev patel but I think it leans into it in a way that satisfying but also just the medically rich and interesting too. So that's what i'll say about it. If that makes sense. I feel like i'm getting a little over into my college paper Area but yes the. That's actually something that Is in this interview. That i spoke in with david lowery and dev patel because the gohain as as david lowery had written him in the script. 'cause lowry book directs and writes this film Is more of a cad. He him In another interview who calls him pathetic and he needed an actor that would be will to counterbalance these negative qualities of go wayne and he thought immediately of of depth patel who's just inherently likable in charming so he talks about that in that in the interview that is about to play soon yet. Let's go and play that right now. So the first question is for david David you had read this poem on the. This is based on way back in college. What struck you the most about it when you beat revisited again as an adult to write the script or the green knight. I'm so many things you know. I read it at the end of my first freshman english class first semester. So i probably wasn't giving it the attention it deserved in an revisiting it. I was struck by modernism. How how contemporaneous texts felt. It did not feel like something that was written seven hundred years ago. I was struck by By the language. I read a couple different translations in preparing for the movie and and then tried my hand reading the middle. English did my best to like under gig grasp of that with with not much success but and then the the thing that that really struck me the most again which was what's captivated me back in in college was that it's a quest for the gawain.
