"That Chattanooga led that game for 39 minutes and 35 seconds. It's a 40 minute game. In case you don't follow college basketball too closely. 40 minute game in regulation, Chattanooga led the game for all, but 25 seconds Illinois took the lead for the first time inside the final minute. Chad anuga had the ball last possession with a chance to win it. Malachi Smith got it. His first shot blocked and then got it back. And incredibly, got a one bounce in rhythm clean look mid range jumper and just missed it. And after the game, he said, that's a shot I practice. Every day. Because the one bounce pull up jumper is a shot every basketball player practices every day. He says the shadow practice every day. So shadow usually make and I missed it and I let my teammates down and he was really down in the dumps about it. Now, you know, as teammates will lift him up and he'll be okay. But when you Chattanooga, you don't so it's a program that hasn't won an incidentally tournament game. Beliefs since 1997, it's been a long time. And you don't get many opportunities where you've got a clean look at a makeable jumper to beat a Big Ten champion. And that's what they had. And he just missed it. So Illinois moves on to play Houston, which destroyed UAB on Friday night 82 68. Like I said, jelly walker was not good in this one. Houston really prioritized making things difficult for him. He finished just one of Tim from three. Yeah, I don't know how much of this game you ended up catching, but this Illinois comeback was truly stunning. The mox led by 14 points in the first half. They opened the second half with a 7 O run. They ended up going up by 11 points there. Illinois had a ten O run in the second half and Alfonso plummer really honestly just completely bailed Illinois out in the second half. He had 13 of his 15 points in the second half. He made all three of Illinois's three pointers in this game, and they were all in the second half. David Jean Baptiste only had four points on two of 11 shooting. Really Chattanooga's office just completely flatlined in the second half. And this was a defensive shootout in many ways. There was a ton of offense to go around. I was impressed that Illinois was able to at least hang on in this game and yeah, they led for all of 25 seconds, but they were the 25 seconds that ended up mattering and they escaped 54, 53. I saw all of the early stuff. Because, you know, I wasn't in studio till later. I was doing CBS CBS sports headquarters during the day right in a column during the day. Had radio at four central 5 eastern and then in the studio. But the truth is, we went on air live at. 11 p.m. eastern, and we were on air for two straight hours. You know, commercial breaks, but that's it. We're on air for two straight hours, highlights, going to press conferences. The discussing what just happened, discussing what it sets up. So once it gets late, that's when I, I'm not able to watch the games anymore because we're talking on television. So like early, I saw Ohio State loyal to Chicago. And man, loyal to Chicago just, I mean, terrible. 41 points against Ohio State. It's Ohio State team that's not great defensively. I think they were like one 32 and adjusted defensive efficiency. According to Ken pom before the game and like jumped up to a round 100 after the game, like moved significantly because of how well they handled loyal to Chicago on that end of the court. So loyal to Chicago eliminated in the first round. I saw all of that. Obviously Notre-Dame Alabama, the Irish, the latest first 14, to advance to the round of 32. We talked about this on CBS Sports Network tonight. If you're Notre-Dame, you don't want to be in the first four. Nobody wants to be in the first four. If you get there as an at large team, it means that you didn't have a great season. But once you get there, if you're Notre-Dame, you got to feel like, all right, we can win two games here because in the first one you're playing another first 14. By definition, they're just like you. And incredibly, they get to play into the main bracket and they get an Alabama team that had lost to teams worse than them all season long. Like when you get into these types of situations where it's a win or you're done, those are the stakes. I'm always interested to look at one team and go, okay, and this is oversimplifying it, sure. But you'll get the point. Hey, is this team we're about to play? Have they lost to anybody like us all season long? And if the answer is no, you're up against it, right? Now, obviously there are exceptions to this. Saint Peter's Kentucky being a great one. Wild things happen. But what Notre-Dame could do when it got matched up with a game with Alabama say, hey, is Alabama lost to anybody like us? This season? And you say, oh boy, they've lost a plenty of people like you this season. And people way worse than you this season. So I thought that was a favorable matchup for Notre-Dame. I actually picked Notre-Dame to win the game. And of course, when javon Quinn goes down with what Nate oats described as a serious knee injury, I don't want to say that was game set match, but it just felt like, you know, if Alabama was going to win this game, they needed to have their full complement of players and when you lose somebody, the caliber quarterly, that got real tough. And so then Alabama ends up losing the game by 14 points. Yeah, and the quarterly injury injury was early in the game too for Alabama. That was kind of a tough break early and Notre-Dame was really, really impressive in this one, especially. I mean, you look at the Irish, they just played a double overtime game just a few days ago. Cormac Ryan was on just an absolute heater in this one. 29 points. For Notre-Dame was really impressed with what he was able to do. Alabama, last season, I was really impressed with what 8 notes NATO stood with that team as one of the best defensive teams in college basketball. That has really not been the case for that team all year. They've been hot or cold. They've had some great wins. They beat Gonzaga. They beat Baylor, but they've lost to some teams that are much worse than I think they probably should have should have probably ended up winning. So not surprised that they would fall in the first round. And definitely not surprised that this Notre-Dame team that seems to be gelling at the right time was able to knock them out of the bracket. Virginia tech entered today, having won the ACC tournament, Notre-Dame. Texas rather entered a day on a three game losing streak and then Texas goes out and handled Virginia tech 81 73, so Chris beard once again advancing in the NCAA tournament and then I do want to highlight Iowa state over LSU. 59 54 TJ burger in the round of 32 of the NCA tournament after inheriting a program that won just two games last season. I mean, that is a remarkable coaching job. And it's also the reason fan bases and we've talked about this before. And athletic directors don't want to really hear anybody talking about I got a three year plan or I need time or people need to be patient. Like TJ Austen burger has blown that out of the water. Trust me, you take over power.

The Lead

"They are a really good team at McMahon's a hot coach. I think he's probably going to be coaching somewhere else next year. We have had two examples in the 60 18 era of a team going from the first four to the final four. So if you want to get crazy, the scarlet knights of Rutgers are legit. Davidson is a really good team. I like them to beat Michigan state Vermont is a team. Again, a familiar character this time of year. John Becker has been there for many years. I think this is his best team. They went 17 to one of the America east. The only game they lost was by one point on the road in overtime and absolutely obliterated the competition in the tournament and Arkansas has been a little bit spotty. Arkansas is great at home and not so great away from home. So that's possible. And then also New Mexico state, I think, is a very comfortable matchup against UConn. Again, an older team, Chris chans is the coach there. They have been to the NCA tournament with great frequency over the last 5 or 6 years. And I'm a big believer in that honors. You know, some of these guys, some of these mid major teams are there for the first time, they can get a little starry eyed, whereas if a team has been there frequently, they can call on that experience. And UConn has had a solid season, but has not really broken through in a way that I think some of us expected. So those are some potential ones. And then South Dakota state in the first round against Providence, Providence, had a very, very good year, one a ton of close games. And then got really embarrassed by creighton and South Dakota state's kind of similar to creating that they spread the floor. They play 5 out, a lot of driving kick, three point shooting there. So I don't know where it's coming from, but we know what's coming from somewhere. So I just named like 8 of them. So if any of these upsets happen, I could say that I called it. Yeah, so Seth every year, it seems like there's at least one player who sort of unexpectedly takes this tournament by storm, you know, last year you might say it was Jason Preston from Ohio or maybe UCLA's Johnny juzang. Once upon a time, it was a little someone named Steph Curry. Who might this year's surprise superstar be? Malachi Smith for Chattanooga. It has the ability to take over a game. Now, David Jean Baptiste, through the most attention when he threw in that 35 foot shot to win their conference tournament, but Smith has really been the guy for them. All season long. He's a very crafty guard. He's 6 four sophomore year averages 20 points a game, 7 rebounds. I love guards who rebound and then he also averages three assists, and he's making almost 42% from three point range. He is the kind of player. He knows how to play inside now. Back cut. And bucket. Malachi Smith going to the line the foul up again. And then the other guy that I'll mention, you know, every year Andres, I have a man crushing college basketball this year is a player of Colorado state name. David roddy, we call him big body David roddy. He's a little bit of a draymond green clone, although much more offensively advanced than draymond was at this stage. He is so skilled. Big fella with the footwork, the balance almost like a ballerina there to avoid contact. He's a 6 5 junior he goes about two 62 70, depending on when you weigh them and how you count it up, but he can score from behind the three point line. He can score under the basket. He's great off the bouts or really dynamic player and just a unique look on the basketball court. So if the rams make a run on this thing and I think they're very capable of doing that, then it's going to be because of big body David roddy. All right, lastly, Seth, March Madness always has some amazing feel good stories as well. I'm thinking sister Jean saying prayers with the loyal Chicago team. Maybe UCLA coach make cronin's dad hep, watching games from the upper level during the pandemic last year. Are there any warm and tingly stories that you're anticipating in this year's tournament? Well, sister Jane is still alive and kick in. I can tell you that. She's a 102 years old. Incredible. I've actually gotten to know her pretty well and I can tell you that her mind is sharper than yours and mine put together and anybody else we know. She is truly a heaven sent miracle. You know, I'll just circle back to this. I think the Gonzaga story, I just feel like people do not fully appreciate consistently how extraordinary it is that this little Jesuit school in the West Coast conference in Spokane, Washington, doesn't even have a football team, has become this amazing juggernaut. And so the question of whether or not they can finally break through and win a national championship and shut up all the doubters and haters, I think would be fantastic. And this collision course that they're on with Tommy Lloyd in Arizona is extraordinary as well. And Tommy Lloyd is somebody who was not a head coach before he came to Arizona. So you're talking about a potential rookie head coach first year head coach at his school, trying to get to a national championship and might have to go through the person who's as close to him as anyone else on the planet. The great thing about March Madness honors is we might think we know what's happening going in, but these storylines emerge. And there's going to be a lot of tear shit. Tears of joy, tears of sadness. It's always painful for these young men when they're season ends and for a lot of them it's the last season playing college and the last season playing high level competitive basketball. So it's a great show and I can't wait for the tip off. It really is the greatest show on earth. Well, Seth, thanks so much for your time. And enjoy this tournament, man. I sure will. I hope you do too. You can find more upset Davis college basketball coverage throughout the tournament at the athletic dot com. And definitely let him know how your bracket turned out on Twitter. That's at Seth Davis hoops. From wondering in.

"Jerry pot will be here in 15 minutes. In the meantime, since we last talked, Gonzaga has secured that I'm one overall seed in the NCAA tournament. We think they beat saint Mary's on Tuesday night. Chattanooga has made the NCAA tournament. In spectacular fashion, Georgia state has made the NCAA tournament. Right state has made the NCAA tournament. Peter kiss? We got to get out of here quick today, GP, but on the back end of this after palm, we got to spend at least two minutes on Bryant and Peter kiss. Keep going. Peter kisses amazing. Brian's in the NCAA tournament. Jameer, Nelson junior, in Delaware, have made the NCAA tournament and my South Dakota jackrabbits are in the NCAA tournament. He's been a fun couple of days, and the deadline. He just called him the South Dakota Jack rabbits. Rabbits. You know, I'm gonna get banned from Brooks. You might get banned. Hey, real quick on that? So I did headquarters last night overnight. And then I go back down. Scott van pelt show accidentally accidentally showed the San Diego state logo and apparently two years ago in the South Dakota state fans got on him. So he had to interrupt his show for like four minutes and it was doing all this stuff to apologize. So I'm just staying on you. South Dakota state. Jackrabbits. Jack rabbits. South Dakota state jackrabbits. Have advanced to the NCAA tournament. The Ukraine jackrabbits were being in a war. There we go. Yes, yes, yes, they very much do. Yeah, how about, listen, Gonzaga, we'll touch on the kazakhs. I'm going to ask you, you mentioned number one overall seed. I'm going to ask Paul about that. As well. I have to at least acknowledge the phenomenal ending between Chattanooga and Furman. Furman has finished in the top three of the sokan 7 consecutive seasons. It's made championship games. It hasn't danced since 1980. And it hits a layup with four and change to go 4.3 seconds to go. And perish. This is why we love this month. Now, Chattanooga's been a really good team for most of the season. It was the best team in the so con. So, you know, on balance on the whole, it deserves to be dancing there, but my oh, my oh, my, my man. What an absolute shot. David Jean Baptiste, an all timer. And by the way, I guess he's a 5th year senior. It's just incredible. We've actually had a lot of really good mid major championship games since we started this whole deal on Saturday night with Murray state beaten morehead state. You know, we're approaching a dozen bids automatic bids that have been handed out. We have one more on Wednesday night and oh, by the way, navy will play Colgate in a one versus two patriot league matchup on CBS Sports Network. I actually wish that these leads can figure this out better. There's one automatic bid tonight and like the big conference tournaments are starting and they're fine. We got a couple of teams that we're going to talk about that are in bubble spots. You're playing Wednesday. There are 15 automatic bits you can hand out on Saturday. Why not just spread it out? I totally get it Thursday and Friday. You have so many really good big conference games. If there's no auto bids on Thursday Friday GP, I'm totally good with that. But can we squeeze in like two more on a Wednesday night? Because you just have this cram and I don't know, I feel like if you're a mid major conference, you get a little bit just a little bit more lost in the shuffle on a Saturday than you would if you were say playing your championship game tonight, but otherwise it's been it's been phenomenal and congrats to Chattanooga for firm and that's completely heartbreaking. Just so eviscerating stuff to lose the way you lost because that three pointer was like 15% at best kind of shot that gene pappy's hit and we will see Lamont Paris mocks in the turning next week. I bet you it's less than 15%. It might be because the way that they brought that up again, no time out, amazing. That's why the don't advance the ball on a timeout is amazing college basketball for exact plays like that. I'm with you on these one bit leagues, they should be, if possible, on Monday night Tuesday night Wednesday night. Because by the time we get to Thursday, we are engulfed in power conference stuff. There's bubble games in the quarterfinals of some power conference tournament. And you get, once we get to Thursday, we're not paying attention to this stuff anymore. But on Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, these one bit leagues are amazing. And they get more attention. How many people know Peter kiss today that didn't know Peter kiss yesterday? It's literally in the hundreds of thousands. If not more, because of what happened there. Because of what happened. I mean, do you want to just push off the Gonzaga stuff and talk major till we get palm here 'cause I'm you know I'm game. Yeah, what is it to say about Gonzaga? They're also beginning they're the number one overall seed and they're the betting favorite to win the national. I don't want to ask Paul when he comes on. If Baylor wins the big 12 tournament with more quads, it could possibly maybe be the number one overall seat. I'm not convinced Gonzaga absolutely 100% has it. Last palm that in a few minutes here, you're right about Bryant, I want to talk about Brian talked about bellarmine. Okay, first of all, Peter kiss, yes. He is your exact kind of player. He's the nation's leading score and has his name is Peter kiss. Dude, dude makes Kurt krissa look like a humble choir boy, okay? He can not get enough of himself. Peter kiss loves him, Peter kiss. And yes, I know Bryant might go to Dayton for the first four. I get all that might happen. Which would be awesome, by the way. Which would be awesome. Put him on that stage. Yes, but if that happens, please, you have to feed him into Bill rafter he's call if they make the first round earnestly improper, you know? Peter kiss with a kiss. You have to have raftery on the call. This needs to be done, okay? I don't think rath worked in the first floor. No, but I'm saying if Bryant wins has a 16, whatever one 16 game raf might be calling, let's have him on it. How can you not? I think he gonna have to talk to rap about that. Dude, and then okay, in all seriousness though, they kind of got lucky.
