Well sometimes you have the various anyway people at all day in part because of the hopeful nature of genes vision but also because of its message of diversity and inclusions as we tape. This creepy bits is launching on september twenty fourth which is tomorrow actually know already launched. Excuse me it's been out there a week and we have the creator and show runner and really the driving force david hernandez with us welcome. It's great to have you on the podcast. Hey thanks so much for having me. So what What led you to do this. Yeah and great question. It's a lot of different things. But i mean i think a big driving force for me was not being able to work much during the pandemic i have a little five year old daughter and up here in ontario canada where our schools have been closed for a good chunk of last year. I had to kind of step in and be the daddy daycare in the data kindergarten teacher and neon after after a year and a half of doing that You know and. I love my daughter. She's lovely. I really was really chomping at the bit to to get back to directing and And it didn't wanna. I have products that in pitching and all of them require financing and bigger timelines and stuff and i really wanted to do something that was quicker more media. I love horror films. genre films. the general love sci-fi. While i wanted to do something that was sort of achievable in shorts and bite size and so working with my cinematographer gregory benefits. We sort of came out with the idea to to make these really super short or films and just put them online and see what happens. Like i've never a lot of the stuff that done before has been for broadcast or film festivals that kind of thing and i've always wanted to to create something specifically for the web in have just never done it so so it's all a little bit of an experiment over here. That's you know. That's the primary reason i wanted to do is feeling like basically cabin fever much really wedded to deduce. That bay. Beg could be achieved quickly. You know..

"To really add. Context to what people are seeing. There is no black and white here. It's a constant conversation. This never gonna end. We're constantly having going to have to reevaluate our policies. Our ethics as the conversations change and evolve as audiences grow and and and different perspectives or are being asked to be represented the through line between all of the journalists. We just heard from is there awakening to the need for context and their journalism over the last year to talk through this a little more. Let's bring in professor kathleen mcelroy. She's the director of the school of journalism at the university of texas at austin kathleen. Welcome to the show. Thank you as we heard these journalists. Say for them. It's not enough anymore to just report what happened. There's this growing understanding that we need to go back to make sense of present news events. How is this effort to offer more context complicated by this moment in our business with business models that have decimated so many newsrooms. How is this need pushed up against that demand. Safe for for twenty four hour news cycle. You know it's interesting. Was that line that you know. Journalism is the first draft of history. What was really sad is that that first draft was often wrong or not even done or information that should have been there was ignored. We can't just give people a set of facts anymore. I think we know that and we have to tell our students that this is not about getting two sides of a story or three sides of the story of if one side is illegitimate. I think now you cannot cover education. You cannot cover criminal justice you can't cover all of these institutions without realizing how these institutions were built david hernandez mentioned the shifting balance of facts and statistics and the voices of the community communities that have gone ignored or unnoticed. By the media. Those voices are traditionally seen as opinion. Do you see a shift in the importance. We give those voices. So what's interesting is that facts are these individual collections of information that can be verified if a blue car hits a red car. You can't deny that it was a blue car that hit a red car. We can't say which car caused the accident. Though often when we get information from advocates in the public it may seem like opinion. But it's their truth. It's what they're experiencing what was quote unquote objective. Or the way things were presented skewed white patriarchy so if we get in other voices. Those voices are often considered a pinion are not mainstream. Well who decided what's mainstream we'll butting up against what you're saying here is that the truth is the public has lost confidence in media. How do we at this point built that. Trust now that we're having more nuanced conversations about our roles in society you know we can go and listen and tell their stories but i don't think we're in position to say trust us. I think there are people who are doing that. Hard work people who are taking place before they ever produced content to make sure that they're telling the story in a way that does not do more harm you know. Why should someone talk to a journalist. If all that happens is my story is told journalism as an institution needs to realize that. It's just not enough to put a mike in someone's face. Well how are you in stealing these changing virtues to a new generation of journalists one of the things that i think is important that we give them. A sense of this is a public good. I use the spiderman. Reference with great power comes great responsibility. So what you do matters. And you need to acknowledge where you're coming from. And maybe before. Journalists weren't told that that was professor kathleen mcelroy director of the school of journalism at the university of texas. At austin thank you so much thank you. Capitalism touches every part of our lives capitalism.

I am a question about the teeny tiny lady. Yes. Is she wearing a mask? No need to wear a mask. Doesn't need to wear a mask. Okay? Just didn't know with the celebrity and all them being so close. She's in a jar. She's in a jar. Okay, She's safe. Oh, thank you. Okay. I believe you. She's in a pickle jar She's in this. No need for a shower curtain and no need. No way. All right. It is known as the covert hug or not supposed to hug Anyway, For some reason, you love this story in the Washington Post. Is this kind of police officer? Yeah, He's a corporal. That David Hernandez of Longwood Police Department in central Florida. So he has been fired because he hugged a co worker, But he didn't just hunger. He taunted her. He would go up to her and say, I can't believe you're such a germophobe. I can't believe you're so afraid of Cove it and then he did that thing that kids do like not touching you not touching. You're not touching you, but like it gets really close to her. So he did all this tour it everything and she got really tired of it, and she filed a complaint, I guess And then he said that He picked up her phone one time and talked into the phone and, you know she, Of course, she got upset about that because the germs go into the phone. So he says he was trying to make her laugh and trying to lighten the mood. But they ended up firing him. And they're saying that it's really not even about the cove it a problem. It's more about the sexual harassment thing. It was the unnecessary touching, she says. She hurt her arm and possibly her finger trying to push him away when he hugged her, And he's saying that's not true that all he tried to do is touch your shoulder anyway, so he's he is not going to be employed anymore. And one other interesting thing in Missouri, by the way, and by the way, why is it that there is it just because people tend to find those stories? Why do all those stories come out of Florida? I start. It is because it's Florida. I know what you mean. It's it is, it is bizarre. It just does a concentration of in fact, it used be website called Florida man, and it was like every Friday they would have some story about some guy that did something so incredibly dumb. Is it because You do people of lower I Q Show you might be. Lucas went up to people of lower I Q. Need Maura temperate. Conditions year round. I guess Google that into the entire Google aiding machine type that all in their lower I Q Temperate conditions year round and just see maybe maybe it's one of these science things that just they just tend to go there. I've also heard they have. They have really open records request there. It's really easy to get records so that that's one reason we know the things that happened in Florida. Okay, fine. All right. Okay. Okay, so, But your hypothesis is that because the weather is better, it attracts a lower I like flies or mosquitoes or something back there drawn. But then Chris comes in with Mr Analytical. Poopy poop over there. Don't say anything else, though. Find Sherry. I was in support of the rear end. All right, John. I googled you at least want to hear what I came up with that really? We moved on. No. Go ahead, John. Outside shot. Go ahead. Yes, No. Great. All right, Well, this is what a headline says. What's the sub headline to the main headline? It's okay. I haven't read the article. New Research finds that within the US those states with cooler temperatures tend to have populations with higher. Accuse their fine There. You have it. Thank you were bored. We're all bored now. Alright, Fine. Here we go. Also. Apparently there's a thing called covert anxiety which you have, Sherry. Is that right Before we get to the fact that you have cove in anxiety Have you gotten your vaccine yet? And you need any help to encourage you get a vaccine. This should help.
