"Reality Check on international says now, it has been a summer of Activism for sports in the United States, and now one of its leading activists for civil rights is given the ultimate on. The International Tennis Federation has just announced. Its Premier Women's team competition is being renamed from the Fed Cup to the Billie Jean King Cup celebrating not only her prowess player but her lifelong campaign for equality and inclusion. It is the first to be named for a female and in the words of the Federation. President David Haggerty King has been a champion on the court and a pioneer of the court and to mark the occasion building king joins us now from. New, York. Welcome back to the program. Told you Jean King there's yet another milestone yet another on yet another. Barrier That you've broken what does this mean to you? To have this tournament named for you. But Christiane first of all, I'm trying to use the idea that it's called the Billie. Jean King Cup. But what I've been thinking about with with these honors and particularly this one I love playing Fed Cup for my country USA in the old cyber player a captain, and now I think about what can we do with for people and particularly girls and women on and off the court? So what we want is a movement. The I. F. has an advantage, all initiative, which is a gender equality strategy for the twenty first century, which will be you know really looking at that how we can make that happen and what that means is. We want more girls women to be in decision making. Positions whether it be lying judge whether it be administration whether it'd be president we needed at the local and the regional in the national, the international level. Very few women if you look at the different countries and how it structured. So we have a long way to go on the court. We have equal rights with men in Davis Cup is what the men have. We have now Billie, Jean, King Cup and you have to play. You have to play those to be able to qualify also for the Olympics. Yeah. So they really important I just before we can go onto the white picture do you remember the first match because? I think you. You played the very first match when it was created the Fed Cup. Do you remember how you feeling? I remember exactly was nine, hundred, sixty three at the Queen's Club in London. We had sixteen teams.

"I have these are these are strange. Times tweeted if Novak Djokovic public persona and the ways perceived the stock market these would have been recor days in either direction because it was hard to really fathom how quickly this turn. I wonder like what Novak's agent is feeling right now and then dress. He had another guru on his instagram. Lighten that's apparently gonNA be recurring segment. Yes Kervin Jafaria. Who is a Persian? I don't know if he's a doctor. He's like a wellness specialist. I say that very lightly Fabio phony. I mean if you're already in deep shit why not invite Fabio? You're still owned. Yeah yeah so he did a live with Fabio do but we're done with Novak every Novak vendors brief over tend to sit on Fabio. No we need a guru on the show. That's what show is. You have like two right here. Fabio funny wants us to know that when this is all said and done he will no longer be traveling to China because of Kobe. Nineteen and them not being able to keep their viruses under control. Look he said Asia Denise Asia. I'm just trying. I could be wrong. Thought it was China okay. I don't quote me on that went to Shanghai or Tokyo. That's pretty much what he's saying. Yes Bob Yo tweeting from Italy which surprisingly has had no corona virus cases zero that he won't go to Asia. What Dude like at this point? The only thing that can explain that his racism xenophobia. Yup that has already third. Okay so enough about trashing. These guys seem I said it was Asia all of Asia like George. He won't go to Jordan Qatar. Whose BECCA Stan. She don't know that that's as Sri Lanka is out to bed so the ITF WTI has gotten on board with this player Support Fund. It's a little bit different than Novak Job. Mitch had conceived it so David haggerty announce on Tuesday that each of the four grand slams will contribute a million dollars the ATP and WTI would contribute close to a million for this player support fund and so it's primarily benefiting people outside of the top two hundred Which is interesting because I think a lot of people between like one hundred and two hundred will have trouble paying their bills as well. You know like I. I don't think actually make it that much. You could argue that. They're saving a lot of money in trees in travel and lodging and stuff like that. So Joe vetches proposal was that they target people ranked between two fifty and seven hundred. So this sort of opens it up to the two hundred level and up six million dollars. It's it's not a lot but it's better than nothing like an appreciable. I Don a little bit of brief brief math and I said for two was it to Tau positive effect on four hundred players for both tours. You'd need like five million dollars for four months. Yeah yes so. It's May seem like nothing but it's not nothing for like a modest monthly income and it also depends on what country you live of course and some players may actually be eligible for like employment insurance or some kind of relief fund in their own country for example like in. Canada their players are independent contractors. Obviously and they would probably be there would probably be eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Fund. Which is two thousand dollars a month? So let's start with it like we've said it before like when you have independent contractors as the people who are generating the money like the talent in your organization. You are relinquishing that risk of hiring employees. Right you are saying. I don't have a lot of responsibilities to you because you are coming to me. And you're you're doing your work independently from this organization like it. Kinda sucks say this. Merger happens and we're hoping it's a merger rather than an acquisition and say the WBZ's best interests are put forth and respected and everything goes hunky-dory Dory. Does that prevent the situation from happening again? Because we're being told that no is time for the tourists to come together. We Need Hashtag tennis unity. Presumably one of the driving forces behind that is the fact that the the lower ranked players are struggling to survive or is it just a cash. Grab at the top again. Yeah Well No. I mean it's still. It's not a labor union They're still I assume they would still be independent contractors and yeah like I think it would probably happen again right on unless something fundamental changes. I don't know how he could think. Otherwise oh I was getting ready to. I don't know who say that to have faith in any kind of corporate entity to do the riding in a crisis is we have whole foods out here paying people two dollars extra hour and making them wear t shirts with hero on it. That's really offensive. Yeah so anyway so. Atp has already committed all this money the WTO was asked as well. And I feel like as usual. The WJ is not quite as skilled as at the PR thing you know. They said the kind of had to be asked. Steve Zsigmond didn't tweet that all. We're doing all this this and this for our for our members so they were asked and he said we've already spent three million dollars. Part of it is refunding membership fees because the terms that are happening this year and part of it is paying first round prize money at Indian Wells thing about this the WPA themselves paid first round prize money for me in wells which is run by. Larry Ellison who has more money than God? What like what what is going on Y like why would be short but at the same time that's one way to look at it but also the W. T. A. Was Quick to make sure that they're playing. Yeah we're taking. They acted very quickly. So I find that the WJ does stuff in a way sometimes quite a few times. That's respectful to its stakeholders and players. That doesn't play as good. Pr Yeah like they should actually. I mean they're they're doing the right thing in this situation but they maybe should have ought about their image as well like also I mean. Pretend your Patrick.

"There has to be some news of players Field that well. We're not scarf self-employed. So we pay licenses taxes with a way of life We try to be good sports months morals and play. Oblique and I don't think that we have to have some information on vendors. Atias whether they care for us or something about as a police heard us. Do you know so. There's a severe shepherd of the world number. Three hundred seventy five covering. You had a good twenty minutes on the phone with her. What else does she had a whole lot to say. Obviously you could hit the the the Internet connection by which we were speaking wasn't the the best so we're not playing too much of the audience but as a bit of a shame because she she had so much meaty stuff to to say. She's in Georgia. Which is in lock down there in a state of emergency that country all tennis all tennis courts. A closed alternates clubs a closed training. Her access to training facility is pretty much nil. She said I said what training able to she said. But a yoga So yes she's she started this petition. She explained that because she kind of wanted to. I will test. The temperature wanted to know how many players struggling as she said. Tennis-player is a a a self employed with no security She described up petition. His is a cry for help and attention because in mono sound that long but to her the fact that it's been a month I could hear in voice and see in Harare. How agonizing that month is been a month is vote like an incredibly long time and it's pretty clear that for for players ranked pretty much. I mean it's obviously on a gradient but outside the top one hundred oversea getting more and more acute the situation. The low down you get. It's it's pretty hand-to-mouth world. She said that she knows many players. That can't play rent pay rent this month. She will will come onto the fact that we've had a statement from the F. shortly. She said she'd sent a couple of emails to the in the last In the last few weeks she's she's had replies those they've been kind of holding messages saying that that that considering the their options she talked a lot about the problem specific to tennis. Ping the there's not really a sense of community not just down to the fact that there is no explicit players Union Not Clear singular voice but she said this is a really competitive sport and the nature of it doesn't lend itself to a sense of community. She says she said we're not supportive. Enough of one another players compared to other sports which I found really interesting and I think she is. Well I know she is. She did say as much as she understands. Everybody's go go stuff going on big stuff going on their own personal concerns and anxieties. She is disappointed. That more high profile people plays with the luxury of a platform. Aren't speaking out more on creating more of a voice for for tennis as a whole and that comes back to the feeling of union among players. Yeah she you know she she. She said they'd been an An email from the WPA two two plays informing them at the various loan application schemes around the world. And she said she'd consulted with a lawyer about these to see if she was eligible eligible. But the lawyer had informed that the majority of tennis players aunt eligible for those loans because of course they do that their earnings that revenues look quite high on the face of it often but of course a lot of the time. They're expenses all close to eat cool to those those earnings right profit. Yeah exactly or exceed those earnings. And she's she also said which is really interesting. Point that most of these loans require a guarantor if some kind some kind of security McGowan a guarantee Against those lanes in tennis players. Don't have that. They don't have any kind of security line that she said I am most other players ranked outside the top two hundred coach to supplement their income just to make ends meet oversea. Coaching isn't an option at all And yet it's Is desperate she she. She was incredibly composed and and well spoken and calm but she seemed sad. You know it was really striking. This is I mean all keep saying tougher everyone but yeah it was tough. It was tough speaking to issue. Luckily she had a lovely little Pomeranian. Didn't made an appearance midway through the inching genuinely did make me feel better for. At least you've got a job with the But yeah it was It was it was pretty Moving really An sorry she. She said that she thinks a lot of players won't come back from this. She thinks many will quit. She said she said even when try tennis does restart again. Many won't have the capital the money in the bank to be able to travel to two events to start earning again. They're going to be so much kind of in realize that they won't be able to deploy the expenditure required to start earning again. That's that's it is a tough business to to make a go of it really in the first place and quite interested in the last twenty four ass. We had patrick more totally putting out a an open letter in which he talked about the challenges faced by plaza outside. The world's top one hundred fell to time. Tennis did something to help them. And and Urged all the governing bodies to get together to to try to sort something out whilst also saying that he felt that the top hundred players that are making money absolutely one hundred percent deserve the money that they've got which did leave me to think. Well okay well. What are you actually suggesting here? Patrick because it's all well and good saying you feel like something should be done but I don't see any suggestion here as to what that should be. We have invited Patrick on to the podcast to to to let us know his thought some we have been directed to his PR person so we'll perhaps Here from person at some point in the future but we did get a statement in the last couple of years actually from the s which was addressing more the fact that they are having to cut their own cloth accordingly. They're they're putting half of their staff on furlough is is in terms of what they call a job protection scheme which jealousy is designed to reduce their own costs as well. They're senior leadership. Team has taken a twenty percent reduction in salary the IT IF president David Haggerty is voluntarily taken a thirty percent decrease and they've said as well towards the bottom of that statement in addition to these measures the ITF is in discussion with the other tennis stakeholders to look into the various options to support nations and players during these times and will provide more information. We've completed that process so that perhaps will eventually address some of the concerns. That severe has been raising and the difficulties faced out there. We also contacted the which elicited a statement from the Chief Executive Steve Sign which which was quite candidate. I thought quite interesting when you go out there. Yeah I do A. He says for everyone in the tennis community and beyond this has been unprecedented challenging time. Our hearts go out to the fans the plays on tournaments including the tournament stuff. None of whom are getting what they were counting on. We wish there was a way everyone especially those in need the most could be compensated at the level they were expecting but the needs are so great and the WPA unfortunately is not in a financial position to do that. Professional tennis players are independent contractors and not employees of the WPA as a result of plays compensation is based on on-court competition and win tournaments held..

"Williams both played Lafayette. I understand that they get ninety thousand most years. So that's an issue for seven hundred ten pretty excellent Staging better week. Still you know massive questions about why we're messing about in this kind of weird itemize sport with all these disconnected tournaments that we know we are because all the organizations that completely disparate and And I find impossible to work together. meanwhile David Haggerty who did much to kick start this whole bonkers processes being confirmed as a member of the say so Weldon Day said through gritted teeth so here with us on the first daily Grand Slam I'm show Of Two thousand twenty or kick started by yourself. Thank you everybody who's pitched in Morton. Nearly fourteen hundred people have backed so far this year. Thanks for doing so and you start a couple of days to do save If if you'd like to think Yeah I what are you thinking about my theory Simon. I'm into actually. It might not end up being the ideal preparation for this. Because because of how high-octane all yeah. I mean we'll be we'll get get a sense of that in the next couple of weeks. Let me I mean I was really interested Interested by your questions about is new absolutely you know ripen ready or is going to be a little bit squishy like like a piece that has been in the over too long by the time you get to the final of the Australian Open on the service team. "At least that makes This competition even more especially because everybody off our theme participate in the victim. Sarah found the Dow I feel underlining confirming just how how DP has to dig and AH I remember that was my immediate reaction after the. US Open final when he would stood the Medvedev comeback despite having kind of tight himself. He's a human being. He gets nervous and yet he will. He will stare that down and find a way and I don't really know how how he does that. I mean that's something. Think for certain kinds of people there. Aren't that many out there. I compare it to Olympia NHS like Chris. Hoy and Steve Redgrave who who will find a level of pain that they're prepared to take in order to keep on going and get over the line and only the very best sports people have that I mean there are people in other walks of life. Who Do it all the time? You know withstand incredible stress and whether it be physical or mental or emotional national and within the normally comfy cozy surroundings sport needle goes places. That are very much naught comfy and cozy in order to win. Yeah in the words if Mary Carillo earlier today she said the best. Part of the Dole L. is great beating heart. Anybody that will never betray him. Isn't IT I. I've had all day to try and think of a way to say that in my own words that would be as goods own bit better and I have in me so I've just method I word for it. Well when you when we we've got Marika tackle these days. It's amazing so we tap into believe May. Yeah it was it was just just fantastic and it just I mean in the end. We're going to hear now in a minute from from jared. PK David Haggerty. And we'll talk to Chris Clarry but I mean they got what they wanted didn't they they got they. They have got this Davis Cup. Format change off to cracking start because it was held in Spain. Spain one Nadal was there and Adele was the winning moments disagree couldn't really have gone better for them in terms of scriptwriting. No I agree with that. I think it's been great success. I have enjoyed it mentally I I but and perhaps we should have David haggerty before we come onto this. I do do worry about complacency a bit. I don't think it helps. Is anyone to to deny the problems. The the the folks with it I think. Ut To is going to be incredibly crucial because you can forgive the Foltz With being essentially an experimental year and but next year the forgiveness threshold will be for thaw lower this paper over the cracks. Doesn't it really that. We've I've had this incredible end and there will be many wonderful moments that I think. Make this event in this format one that I hope succeeds in the long run because I think that it. They've got something they have got something in that we've had an incredible week of sport It just has so much further to go And they've got to. They've got to iron out so many things here now the man who's in charge of it all ultimately the is Gerard. PK because his company is marketing company. Come Cosmos Aboard Davis Cup. They own it they run it obviously in conjunction young show with the it ass but basically they bought the rights to him. This this guy is is a world renowned and World Class Footballer for for Barcelona Celona. He's very much still in the height of his career. It's quite a thing that he's doing to be juggling. These two things one. He still an active athlete And he came into press today spoke for half an hour in Spanish and English alongside. David Hannity Matt was there recording the press conference. We've taken a couple of the answers here. The just just give you a bit of an insight. Into what jared PK. His his outlook is particularly in terms of moving forward. Because he wants things to change next year. I think that in the future as I think that we we set it idea and we are really open to sit down with the ADP and tried to arrive to a deal to me to make a unique competition super event of two weeks and try to find the best spot in the calendar I think that during this week Nobody can refer to number one and number two in the war right now have expressed that They wonder saying they want. Just one you then any of its policy will put it in September of two weeks and this is something that For us I mean since they won we express that that we wanted to to arrive to this deal. I think is the best for tennis. It makes sense to have right now. Two different competitions That are very similar. And this is the way we're going We are very happy that in the next few months I think we will start talking again with the ATM. In and I hope in the next few months we can we can announce something the moment cosmos and not investing in the Fed Cup is. Is that something that is of interest trustee year for Sharon and since they won. I think that we showed interest to the ATF What we said to them you so obviously we wanted to step-by-step and Davis Cup on itself? It was a big big project. We don't want to to try to do too much because then you don't you don't do things right and at the end of the day. It have decided to vote to For the next three years to Budapest. Show For us now we are full. Focus on try to year-by-year make this competition and this event even better and bigger and in three years. Let's see where we are so he wants to September date. That's GonNa be interesting He wants two weeks. He said he spoke. Doke there in answer to Russel follows question in in the longer term of wanting to to involve fed couple on have a mixed event. Just just generally what do you think of what you've heard from jared PK. I mean. I think you met him as well Catherine I think he's very impressive. Really impressive and I think I think I really think his love of and a few tennis's very genuine. I mean overseas. He's a businessman and has financial incentives. That go along with with that but I do believe he cares about tennis I think Sarah I think there are questions too about things he says united. I find the the the party. Line from from pecan pecan from from haggerty. We'll hear about about Fed Cup the question that the Russell posed that pecan hippos exactly the same question to Hannity You know his money way. Mouth is isn't it at the end of the day. They haven't invested in Fed Cup and I think everybody knows that if they had wanted to that would have been greeted with open arms. So Fed Cup has been neglected in favor of Davis Cup of the facts. So I don't just accept everything he says simply because I find impossible in an impressive but I do find impossible. Impressive and You know with with some hesitations I am I. You think I'm willing to embrace him as a as a fact serving in tennis you know. He's he's investing in the sport. Oh I'd love it. If he were investing in Fed Cup to in a in a lot of other things but I think by and large. He is a fool's goods in tennis. I think from what we've seen so far And I guess time will I'll tell in the in the long run including how financially viable all this ends up being whether it whether it is going to be sustainable in the long run now mention in that Matt spoke today with Haggerty. That was shortly after that press conference and that starts by asking him how he feels. The week has gone the final. It's been a very successful week week. I think we have a great foundation to build on for future years We've had over one hundred thirty spectators fans that have that have come the top players. Harasser here We have eighty seven players from around the world. been some fantastic matches some great environments. I think last night watching Spain play a it was a fantastic against great. Britain was a fantastic match great atmosphere. But we've had that all throughout the week in the group stages so having the top I players here having the media coverage around the world. Everyone knows this week that it's Davis Cup. Finals were in previous years. It might just have been two nations. That were aware era of the rest of the world. Perhaps not are there any aspects. You think you've caught wrong. I don't think there's anything that we see that we've gotten wrong. I think there a number of areas that we can improve and I think that that's what we'll be doing. We'll be doing evaluations. Talk into the players talking to their entourage talking to media Vance hands to see what we can do better.

"We'd better talk about what actually actually happened before we do just to market on on the rest of what's coming up in this final daily edition of Tennis Podcast for twenty nine thousand nine. We have gone town or rather Matt Roberts. We're going to be hearing from refunder down in the press coverage straight afterwards we're going to be hearing from Gerard. PK WHO gave a press conference this morning about the future of the Davis Cup. We're going to hear Matt giving grilling to the IT. If chief David Haggerty you're going to be hearing that Tehran terrorist podcast and you're going to be hearing from a good friend of ours. One of our favorite colleagues Christopher Clary from the New York Times Matt's been speaking to him and it's just so fascinating to get the view of somebody who's been covering Davis Cup since the eighties and is there isn't really a voice in tennis. I think did did I. I look forward to the view of more than him because he's going to have thought of something that I know I haven't thought of and and that was the case again in Matt's conversation with him so we'll have that coming up but first folks water what a performance from those two players first of all when when it was revealed that physics is going to be drafted in his first appearance on a tennis court in six and a half weeks. I read to be playing against a guy who was mourning the passing of his father from three days ago and this has been obviously ever since and he was going to be the single selection. I I filled up. I was really I was. I felt really emotional about just the mere prospect of admittedly. I haven't had an awful lot of sleep couple diet and things probably are getting a bit more than they normally would but I. I can't really imagine how he did that about history. Good Just to to even commit to it and yet at the same time I can kind of see why he did why he did it. It's a bit like when people say it's best to keep keep busy. Sometimes I don't know I mean everybody's situation is different isn't it. There is no one way to grieve but the way he you did what he did handled himself won the match. I mean he beat Phoenix oceanic seeing for goodness sake and then the scenes of him celebrating waiting and being with his teammates are found it incredibly moving difficult to find the words isn't it. Yeah I I just thought it was one of the the most extraordinary things I've seen on the tennis court to be to be honest. I think there's there's such a danger with a with a player. lightbulb Easter Gu. We very often use words about his game. Maybe as bit robotic orbit or a bit mechanical in a way because that his tennis that the pure bones of tennis is a bit like that. But you know he is he. He is a human person going through just the most difficult emotions and for him to be able to deal with everything everything that he's been through an channel into that performance. I thought was one of the just one of the bravest things that I've seen in in a long time. It was really really moving and everyone in the stadium. You his story you could tell there was such such love towards him and there was. There was absolutely no sense that anyone was was forcing him to do this. I think think it was very much his own decision. I can imagine. I don't know the team conversations that would have happened but I can imagine they're all saying look. You don't have to play Roberto but you almost get the sense that he just wanted to as you said to kind of deal with it in his own way and he's already had a lot of amazing tennis achievement achievements this year about Easter Goo. I think you know. He's beaten Djokovic. A couple of times made a Wimbledon semi-final been a bit of a star Australian Oakland Crack crack the top ten but what he did today was was bigger than tennis. It was a it was really moving. The there was slight hint. Hint of irony to it because I feel like there was another incident of this this year. But that you know obviously he was a participants key participant in in that match that Andy Murray played at the Australian Open were now we now know foolishly. Andy Murray sort of essentially retired after it and we'll sort of lamented the fact that the time the Bautisa good embiid handed this role is is the villain in a just a macguffin in the emotional no torrent story. That was Andy. Murray at the time and of course what. Roberta t-shirt is gone through this week is is very different and and not comparing it to the physical strife of advantage but we thought at the time about routed feeling completely unjust that it was Roberta about Easter. Good that had to take on that role. Because he's this he's not just a macguffin macguffin or Roy Tower. You know participants is. He's a lot more than that and deserves his own story. And you know it's not it's it's not the story would have wanted but my goodness me was that torrent of emotion on his side of the court. Today also the end of it. He he as well as being emotional he said I would wouldn't WanNa be anywhere right now than doing what I'm doing. And you know that was great to say so. Water performance. What our performance he put in straight-sets he lived with this young lad all the way through that first and then he just took over fantastic performances salon that set the platform for now? They're very tough Felix organism. Today I really I really felt for him. You know it was it was about. Easter gets rolled against Marine Australian multiplied by a thousand if not more and when they put Felix Socially Siemian the team this morning but always afternoon I was thinking. Perhaps perhaps this is going to be his this moment because I still feel like four. We know about what you're seeing and we've seen his rise. He hasn't really had a standout moment yet. He hasn't Done workshop of out of beating the doll in Montreal carrier State beating the Wimbledon. That kind of thing. Isn't that one standout result yet now on it will probably it will come. I'm sure but I wondered whether it would. It would be today but then as soon as the match kind of started you got underway. We realized that this was not an ordinary match. Not an ordinary situation. It was it was difficult for for him. I think as well given given the background and yeah so he still waiting for that really but credit to teach do I mean. I didn't think I could have more respect. Respect for him as as Botha Athlete tennis player also as a person he's been he's been one of the most supportive tennis players of LGBT rights on tour. He's he's a good guy I think I think he. He's been through hell of a lot because he also lost his his his mother I think in two thousand sixteen. So you know you just you just really feel for him on a on a day like this and it's I. I am pleased for him that he he got the win and he did seem to get some joy out of it and actually noticeable the Dow made a beeline folks as soon as he got off the floor having one and just just picked him up off his. Yeah Yeah Nidal. Has I think all the team did but Nadal I think has a real real human quality where it comes to connecting with people both in the stands and on a personal basis with with his friends he sort takes over in order to to make people feel comfortable and he kind of knows what to do. In a given situation I feel with people mm-hmm and and that's what he did there and his performance today he was. He was pushed by chiappa valve in the second set. In the I I think probably CHIAPPA Valla was was a little tight and he couldn't he couldn't really put a finger on the Dow early break. That was kind of it. Second Set I think the Dow got a bit tight but chiappa valve. Just did what we all know he's capable of doing any any I hesitate to say should have won asset because I said that yesterday about the second set of the doubles the factors. Dow's winning these sets so if he should have lost them he would have lost awesome. He rips out the grasp applies intrigue. And that's what he did again here. Yeah it was a slightly strange atmosphere in the stadium. I thought for the the match Perhaps I was just comparing it to the last tune. Anxious that I'd seen West Bain had been one they were down and it was all on the dull to get them back in the tie so there was some jeopardy whereas today it kind of felt like people were just expecting the dollar to win and this was going to be a bit of a coronation and that was that was the case in the first set and it was. It was up to chiappa valve to change the mood in the stadium and to his to his immense. It's credit he did that. Started swinging started getting into Nidal Service. Games am really rocked him the mood yet. Move just begun to change thanks. People got a bit more anxious and yet every time there was a big point the Dow raised his game and saved his best for those moments. Because I think he was is a little bit short on Energie understandably this eighth match in six days. He was starting to drop the ball a bit short. And you know it wasn't quite the force awesome his groundstrokes that there have been a week and he he needed to get through the second set. I think just otherwise it could have become really complicated but yeah how many yesterday's podcasts. For praise about the doll. I think everything we said stands today as well. He's just he is extraordinary in what he has done. This this week is is up there with. I think some of his best achievements. I really do the way. He's played just relentlessly. Just just made it. It's such a mission for him for himself. Let's let's hear from him talking after winning. That Davis Cup title. He's a Victoria. them very happened habit goes. I played the game one of the toughest opponents possible and after a very very long week for me physically and mentally tune because The energy that I tried to put in every single moment on the on the whole event have been all the things all over the half inside me and honestly the perfect and other season for all of us know when all how difficult is to win the trophy and we know how difficult to keep winning in the in the future and we know that when to to convert this opportunity now without we fight very hard and What Roberto did Today is out of this planet in my opinion So but as I say all day our team is great. I don't see a lot of things that all five players take part on the competition. Everybody off is Played a much..

"It's not being widely reported that motivation for the me was the guaranteed purse of with a guaranteed purse that would equal and better that of the WJ finals which made me laugh out loud as making coffee in the kitchen. Found that very amusing. Here's one instance of inequality in favor of men, and it had to be rectified instantly. I mean, it's it's on Twitter side news to people saying it was about time. I moved. I mean, let's see I it's very enough to ensure it's been twelve years and the Cherie in authority is premised on the right guaranteed to make money if the ATP fair enough, but still for the British point of view because it's a big toy lament with doing a good job of presenting a different look foolish to most floating voters is all about the growing season. Familiar Cup in sort of taking up. The venue in that sort of I guess trying to claim the the the crowd that the ticket buyers for that event. Trying to sort of. Very well. We'll go against them mental cuffing cities where they don't have tennis already. Tennis already. It has a relatively minor events on the WPA circuit. And that was a huge week AG who own to to have thirty five thousand people coming through the doors of the shopping areas. The restaurants around the dome that was the biggest week of the year. So Cup would be a three day event wouldn't replace it. But I I can see that. It'd be a little motivation for them to make an awful lot of sense. Ticket buying public. Really? In the right way, we used to come from didn't they? The Roger Stanton after a pilgrimage famous. Yeah. Wasn't that? When I'm came back. Having won twenty twelve he came back one the US open first match British soil because Joe and he was like the second favorite with. He must have won the body had to do. Yeah. David Haggerty is seeking reelection. As the president reports. Chris Clarry, no great surprise there. And just a few tennis results for those of you that actually want to hear about tennis boss Alona one by Dominic team. Correct. Prediction by capturing Whitaker that he would beat Rafael and the Dow in the semi finals well with that. And we had over eight hundred votes in our prediction for that for that particular match fifty fifty which I found really interesting gross interview with team published on Wednesday. What do you? Sorry, I because it was like a marriage in the fed up with hearing the same thing twenty times a day and he's in favor of equal pay because he sees how hard his girlfriend KiKi which works in practice and on the court. What did you think of him as a bloke? I mean, he's under reported on the new because he he's very complicated believing in these quite bright. He's just he's just loves his Tennessee school girlfriend, and he gets on with that. And he's fantastic player. And it's kind of hard an angle on him because he's just really decent human being. I mean Khushi very humble. And actually, I was working on Monte-Carlo with people coming up into stuff. I mean, he was absolutely charming. Chelsea. Just looking for an angle negative one. I'm considering doing something silly. But something's void guy. I want to put is what is not think. No. Coma. I think Croatia. I think. I think they'll win both singles tomorrow, and then probably lose the booze and wrap it up on Sunday would be my prediction. I'd guy with the same actually my it says the same. But he just wouldn't you wouldn't be surprised if you know pulls out something with but. Go and then I'll say Kareishe as well. And well Seventy-six percent thing that Croatia will beat France on the pulse. Sipho although there is twenty three hour still to vote and what about the singles rubbers? I think we we both. We all think that the Croatian plays a win and eighty nine percent thing cherish will be shoddy and Seventy-nine percent think that Chile will beat Songa. So yeah, it looks. We're all in agreement. But this is this company can be magical. I mean, maybe asked me us Megan to my when this stadium is full of twenty five thousand Frenchmen, my different view. But at the moment. "It's on numerous. So the channels around the world, which you can you can find out about them the Davis Cup website. And you can also stream it via the Davis Cup website itself. And the fact is in the UK if you want to watch this guy, that's what you've got to do. It isn't on any of the other TV channels, and I think that that is one of the big selling points about what they're trying to do next year. Isn't it? The fact is. A tie between France. And Croatia in France. At the moment is not of sufficient interest to broadcasters, for instance, baby, sports, and BT sport. I think. Sunday, baby sport, streamed, the British tyrod here this year, and it has done for a couple of years, but the the fine that self isn't. And I think that that's one of the big things they can package it and say, right? This is a big jamboree for a week and broadcast is will bid for the rights to it. Yeah. And and that is cygnus not insignificant defy that it does end up being a. Parochial. Then doesn't it United to the countries involved? It is it's immense, but a dental your expense. His but very few international media presence at Lowe's, his final I am always intrigued and slightly concerned though. I hype I'm wrong to be concerned by what's David hiked. He had to say about he's obviously go to load of chips riding on the assumption that international funds going to travel to Madrid next Jit, I found that quite interesting. The fact that Madrid was was one of the the countries considered because it's in Europe a load of the front running. Tennis nations in the world right now a European. You know, we need a knowledge -ment that they need the funds to show up to to make it work, and the Shen will sunny, something more and hope that the international founds will travel to Madrid next Davis Cup. Final. I they might they might. I'm not saying they won't that. I don't quite show. The the confidence that David Hijazi has sounded like he had that will be the case at the moment. I think the more likely to travel to Madrid then they all three different cities in Australia for the ATP cop. I think that's something that they peak up. My find is a bit of a sort of. Of negative of competition in this just not surely this just not going to be that many sort of fans of all the countries there. But it's basically a sort of trade off isn't it trying to get the best of what the Davis Cup currently is and trying to combine it with this vision of sort of kind of well cop of tennis of a one week with the pool cost is and of greater interest. And I'm not sure either solution is quite yet. But maybe in time they'll come together. And and they will find the perfect hominy iffy. Like fingers crossed things cross. Right. "They lose money on have pro circuit events that they're investing into the few. Future of the players. So that we're really developing the next generation of players. And that's why it's so important to us by we believe having one competition Davis Cup would be would be great for tennis. And just lastly, what plans do you have to form? The Fed Cup of a sleigh. The women maybe have been a bit left out in this. So far with the Davis Cup performs ATP Cup. What can you say about the Fed Cup? Well, we've had some very productive meetings on Fed Cup as well. And I think for twenty twenty or fit Cup committee in board have have discussed the possibility of doing something similar where we would expand the size of the world group made teams to a minimum of sixteen have a round of home and away and then have a finals with maybe eight teams or twelve teams in in a location. We're looking potentially in April the second week of Fed Cup where we would do that. So it's something that we have ambition for for twenty twenty. And so that's the project that we're working on. We have a way to go to, you know, get all those details hired out. But that's that's what our plan is. Okay. Thanks, david. Thank you for joining us on the cost. And have you have a excellent Davis final. Thanks very much. Appreciate your time. So those David Haggerty with Matt robots of our parish tennis podcast, Catherine. That was fascinating wasn't it to to hear Matt put such direct blunt questions his way and see what he said. And I was at least encouraged by the fact that he said those conversations last week were about trying to get to point where we have one team competition because that's I think what we all think we need to end up with. Yeah. Absolutely. I was encouraged by David taxi had to say the he referenced the the the best interest of tennis, which is something disappointing. We. Mentioned that often. I mean, it does make that announcement in the cinema. Oh by Chris, low sweet old mall. Bizarre. The we, you know seeming that David Taichi Rideau n- on those meetings. Is we have no reason to think that that is no, you know, just is posturing it is all just starting about showing the size of your weaponry. Isn't it? It's it's. Sosa filariases, but. Yeah. It's it's I think what. It does it does. But, but you know, at least at least still round table. I mean. Yeah, it sounds like the table. You know consists of a little Blake's going this. You know, this is how big my. Bone is how big Ilbo. But you know. He says the table table at least around it. Hi, matt. I mean, that's I mentioned it supposed time. They all know as you said, you said yourself, you quoted Chris KOMO they all know where we need to get up to. It's just the the need to figure out a way that they can all walk away fit in light that one of it. Yeah. It's just it's just a shame that it feels like it's going to have to come situation where we have these two of events for few years before before they're able to actually do something about it. Because Catherine says. Going ahead with it all just makes it makes the words at the moment seem a little bit redundant for the time being. But hopefully look into the future they they are on the same page. But you know, what if what if the Davis Cup next day? It doesn't turn out to be great and the ATP Cup. Does suddenly you're in a situation where you know, the P cups in a stronger position and the Davis Cup. So most having to sit of concede something to that. So it's gonna be interesting to see how they do play out. But at least from what they told me Laos also have singing from the same hymn sheet. Question. And actually just one of the point. "Meeting that we had continuing dialogue and January with this group really step back. And and do what's what's best for tennis in collaboration. I don't know what that outcome will be. But I feel positive that that we're moving forward in a constructive way. And obviously you mentioned that those discussions with the governing bodies at the recent ATP finals, the ATP count was launched. That may be holds a couple of aces that the Davis Cup doesn't with ranking points and the first week of the calendar is that competition threat in any way to the new Davis Cup. Or are you confident that the discussions will perhaps see a happy ending everyone who maybe even create a unified competition. I think the basis of our conversations that we had in London were looking at at having one competition. So I think that that could be the end result. A few years down the road, provided you know conversations continue along those lines I can really speak just for Davis Cup. And I think what we're doing is just focused. We've had this plan for over a year in we're focused on seventy five days from the hill having the best qualifying round between twenty four nations. And then making sure that the Madrid final is is fantastic. So that's that's our focus, and that's our job. So Chris komo's said it would be insane to have to team competitions. We're having that way at the moment. But what you've just said that maybe you'll vision as well as one competition. I was for you. Because the Davis Cup is that you'll vision one team competition. I think it might be a shared vision, you know, by by the stakeholders to have one competition that that makes sense for for everyone. I mean, the reason that we feel so passionate about Davis Cup is as the governing body the federation for the tennis worldwide basis, two hundred nations developed tennis and in their countries, and the you know, the the benefits from Davis Cup and by the players playing it gives us the resources to distribute quite a bit of significant funding to the nations that can run junior tournaments that.

"Ahead to next day of the the competition is changing with many teams in the final eighteen teams venue. Some welcome nations. How you going to ensure that the new Davis Cup finals still fails like Davis Cup? So what what elements of this weekend? Will you be looking to replicate next year? Well, we're about seventy five. As a way from the first round qualifying in February so exciting this time as we look at the twelve matches that will take place the twelve ties between the twenty four teams to qualify for the finals. So I think that you know, what we continue to look at are the positive things that we're gonna see here in in Lille pick up on on what we do. Well, we're excited about being in Madrid. Because many of the teams that will be in the finals are from Europe. And many of the teams have spectators and fans that that will travel the travel today, we'll travel it's a great iconic venue. We have three stadiums and Russo it gives us the ability to really have a top world-class final with eighteen teams were excited about that. With the travelling fans, we're going to have that atmosphere of home and away. The nice thing is, you know, for the teams the spectators come they're short of seeing their team play over the first three days. A couple of matches minimum of two batches she'll be some great competition. And some may wanna stay in continuous even if their team is out of the finals from a broadcast perspective and streaming perspective. Now the world will be following. Because of the eighteen teams that will be there. They'll be a lot more interest. Whereas sometimes the finals can be the two countries that are playing and the rest of the world isn't as aware as they will be in two thousand nineteen. What if you made of the reaction to the Davis Cup fo-, obviously, plenty of support. But also to say some criticism as well. A couple of people who involve this weekend. Paducah we ignore have spoken out quite strongly against it. Well, the we respect the views of players in what we love is the passion that the captains and the players have the competition. That's what makes Davis Cup special. It's not just a attorney that you're playing representing your nation. It's wearing the colors carrying the flag. And we know that that's very important. So what's important to us too? Is to ensure that the first round of qualifying has the the home away aspect that you know, one of the DNA of the competition and to demonstrate with a final in Madrid that you will have that atmosphere. You will be playing for your country. It happens in other sports, and you're not always playing at home. So we think it's very very important changes difficult sometimes. And we understand the responsibility that we have as the ITF to make sure that we deliver a top class twenty nineteen Davis Cup final one of the main gripes may be that people have with the new competition is the is it position in the canon oversee at the moment Phan of ember next year, people said that's not ideal Jawa Zverev, for example, said he pens to the qualifying and Frankfurt in February. But then to be in the moldy in in November. When thinking long term when is the ideal position for you. You've obviously created gaps in the calendar of an April. Maybe some time off to Wimbledon. Does it have to be the end of the year? Other other options we had a very productive meeting last week in in London with the stakeholders with the grand slaves with the ATP and the players talking about great solutions for the future. I think collaboration is very very important having a team competition that having the Davis Cup at the right time for nail it's independent. But I think our discussions were very positive about possibilities. I mean, the issue that we have really is calendar. Not just for Davis Cup calendar for the players and for their health and wellbeing. So that at the end of the season, they're all firing on on all cylinders. I've had many conversations over the past fifteen years with stakeholders in different ways. This was by far the most positive..

So it has happened. But yeah, I it looks as I package wasn't in the team that time. So I mean, he's one of the world's top doubles blood. His knee. So say he is he's going to be favored unless they unless they really need chillers for some reason. How's Buna church looking map because although one paper we haven't seen him for a little while he was of see at the last week. And he was a lot of players Goto hitting pony. He's spent ten days pretty much playing singles practice sets with the world's top tennis players. So art expect to see the the surface change to take into account, but I'd be expecting into pretty show. Yeah. He's he's certainly is. I and has a it's interesting the surface. Probably the one thing we should mention a bit more. Perhaps I always wonder with when you're choosing a surface, whether you should pick a surface to sort of amplify, your own strengths or to negate the opposition thing. That's always the kind of conundrum and the NF Noah was basically saying how it was a little bit of both. He he certainly clay bearing in mind that he knew she was going to be the fine Osen as it happened church. Was there was an alternate as well and practicing on the hardcore? But also he thinks clay kind of the French plans haven't really had any good results since since the clay season and vote on Garo. So he kind of wants to wants to get them back to feeding those good vibes from the clay. And also he's fairway that clay is the surface that that takes the longest feel comfortable on the French team have been here while impressing on clay for about three weeks. They've actually only been practicing on this core for a day because it hosted international rugby at the weekend. So they've only been able to practice on it from yesterday. But yes that I think is the biggest question Mark over church and Chile how. Well, can they adapt to the clay or it's gonna be fascinating max has been out there for the last twenty four hours as we've been talking about and this morning, he got chance to speak to the top man at the ITF, Mr David Haggerty. I'm excited to be here in Lille because we know what a great stadium an atmosphere that we're gonna have for the finals between France and Croatia France last year, reigning champions in the same venue in Croatia runners up a couple years ago and winters and twenty two thousand five rather. So it's gonna be exciting. We know the atmosphere will be dynamic. It'll be all the things that we believe are important for Davis Cup. "Him, the kind of indecipherable captain, and he's he's he's got these velvet tones. He's he's an amazing amazing sort of communicator. And he's been he's basically had the players on the sort of Janik no retreat for for a few weeks. They've been doing yoga. Sounds great. Running in the park together. And I saw pitches that I have to say that loot pretty miserable less good. If you're having to wear woolly hat to go for a run is not that. I today is it. I don't know if this is something you'll get to experience my bionic, Noah conducting the crowd singing LA's of victory in that stadium that you'll sitting in right now last year was something that will live with me forever. So yeah, that I there's no way I can adequately describe sort of the the CPA natural magic. If that Jahic, Noah inspired moment. But yeah, maybe we'll say it one more time. I am thrilled that I appear to have won over on my two fellow tennis podcast presents us here because French French-speakers and in Matt's case, how many languages do you speak. Well, three. English French and Spanish, and I sort of dabble in Catalan. Right. Well, don't speak Croatian. And is he didn't understand the word of that press conference. Joko cryan. Happened tonight. David that you don't speak Croatian, either just happen tonight. How to? Joke. A grind deeply hurt is all I can say to that. Anyway, just just on though, Catherine didn't he win that he won the decisive rubber year ago? So he he has something doesn't he? Yeah. Which is. Yeah. Which makes this decision. All the more surprising exactly as he has been gaining. No his guys much as I might say. He's a little bit flaky the Yannick Noah he has stepped up. He's been his guy and by and large. He's responded to being knows guy. So I reckon this hurts Philly. Capri my hope it hurts. It sounds. Some people kind of question whether he has an awfully certainly cared in every inch the ice over the final last year. He he. Yeah. Catches cool say I would expect that this hurts a lot. His record is shocking this year, by his standards the last two years his win loss record on the main Tories thirty four wins. Twenty two losses in two thousand sixteen and thirty six wins. Twenty two losses in two thousand seventeen this year is managed twenty five and twenty it's been a real comedown. So esque numbers and his ranking is pretty much doubled. He's gone from eighteen to thirty two. So he's really fallen down the rankings. What are we looking at for the doubles as things stand because they both got specialist doubles teams, haven't they? Yeah. He's older Franco. Hey, currently on the sidelines and bad and Kalomo against even Daud ligon, multi Pavic. That could be a really good doubles match. But do you think there's any chance that Chile might come in? It's all it's possible. Isn't it? I mean, obviously, if I think it really depends on the on the Friday singles results, if as maybe most of us would probably expect Croatia to maybe two nil up you might as well rest chilling. I think and give dotty compact ashore. An mou. I think decent doubles player. He has probably before has a for Croatia. Believe bit over. I mean in Pavitt Dodig and old Frankowski go, I have learned he's the oldest shouldn't be cooling mode franco-sudanese definitely older than even Dodig. Vilgam I'm giving as we speak in those eve eve three really, great doubles players genuinely Radi Radi. Great doubles players. And. Yeah. So I find his considered I think it would be surprising really to bench thing to see the witness Chile doing any doubles practice. Matt. Yes. Not at the moment. He's currently he's taking it. Oh, break and churches hitting with someone else. So I don't actually recognize perhaps that is hold Franco. I'm not sure he did not she come in Chile into the doubles in the first round. And you know, that he was very good against millers ranch in a first round in Paris than it was three tiebreaks eventually lost out. But I think that that is a massive gamble. So so that's I guess one of the main reasons that he has been picked to is that your sense, man. Yeah. Indeed. And Janet now set impress that he's been fame press with the way, Jeremy shoddy has been to the playing aggressively. He sees the key to this tied to go out there and to sort of earn your point aggressively. And he sites showing me shoddy as you know, maybe the best attacker the moment in the French team perhaps written sort of hidden between the lines. There is is a suggestion. That Luca we may be a little bit too defensive naturally, which could be interesting point. Obviously pre was the one last year who sort of clinked the winning point. And he's very much been Yanic knows, man. He's been the one who's played the most matches on the narrow in this third stints that now has had as captain, but we did. Turn up today at the press conference is the only one wearing wearing a cap almost as though he was shielding his face, and perhaps that was an early indicator of of what was going to come. But yeah, I'm I'm with Catherine in that. If if he was going to drop either of them, I was kind of expecting it to be Songa. Because of those reports we'd had earlier in the week, but certainly unit now a seems to have a little feeling about Joe song others, I've been reading I've been reading keep and there's been a suggestion that may be sung can be this year's on reluctant for the Frank shoe came in one thousand nine hundred one in the final and at the time was ranked two hundred forty three in the world after year injuries. And yet he had this big match experience. And he pushed February center of the team who'd been the hero in the quarterfinals in the semi finals and Lecomte went onto beat Sampras. And then earn a point in the doubles along psyche four, Jay and. And front one on the Yanic. Now is capstan say so there's a failing that may be Sanga can be player again. But certainly there are some concerns about his form having only played a handful of matches really since since the start of the. Yeah. Very sorry. That's a very interesting point that one isn't it very, well, what the French have is bags of talent absolutely binds of talent. But you know, I don't know why this is proven to be the case with the the recent crop of French plays by the rule. Bit flaky, aren't they? That's the sort of running theme. You know, they're on many of them that you'd want playing via life, but I wouldn't mind having Joe Wolford Songa even off year of injury playing for my life. Whereas I wouldn't want leak we doing that song. You think would be better sort of rising to the occasion and actually thinking back to that ninety nine hundred. One finally mentioned of interviewed unit note about that in the past. I don't have HUD, more captivating interview than Yannick Noah talking about the day that he went to visit on relic owns and Lecomte was in bed, and he could not move because of back surgery. And he said, look, we need you. We need you in this team. If we're going to beat a team consisting of Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi in singles and an a world class double team as well. And and Laekan was just like a man possessed thereafter, and he made his his one goal, and I'd say that that is the highlight of unwritten accounts entire career, and that includes reaching the French Open final I think that that meant more to him proving himself when it looked like he was finished and beating Sampras in front of his own fans..

"Again. So how do that? I've I well, thank you. I'm currently sitting in the stat PM more wa ching born a Szarek shin. Merrin chile. Go through their preparations. Having quite an intense practice set in front of me at the moment or right? Who's winning? Well, then I'm talking to you. But I would I would actually maybe sake. Sure, it's just been winning more points. Okay. Fine. Well, we've got loads to get through today because Matt's has been at the press conference is he's being at the draw. We've got a lot to talk about head of the Davis Cup final which begins on Friday tomorrow. We've also got an exclusive interview with David Haggerty of the the top man at the who Matt has been speaking to about the future about next year about what happens when the traditional Davis Cup format is no more when they start having a Davis Cup finals with with. What is the eighteen nations? Yep. That's right. Yeah. Eighteen nations neutral venue and some two of those nations being wildcards as well. Yeah. So that will be this time next year. That's all happening matters got into it with David Haggerty. Talking about the ATP Cup announcement last week. And what that means and the vision, I absolutely fascinating already heard this interview and David Haggerty. Does give some insight into the meetings that went on last week with Chris commode and Cray highly at the Cup announcement ahead of that. So that's a come. But first of all, let's let's have a look at what we've had today because it's revealed a draw which was a bit of a surprise to me. Matt tell tell us what the drawer is. Yes. So it was a bit of a surprise. I it wasn't of audible gasp level of surprise. But I it was surprising because Jeremy shoddy has come in for France and he's replaced. Luke appre is the number one. And then you have Joe Wolford song goes the number two said that leaves Friday singles as Jeremy shoddy against Bowen sharks and Songa against Maron Chile. Does that give you audible gasp levels of surprise countering? No. Oh, not far off over gospels of surprise FRANZ. France has an embarrassment of riches and yet not an obvious standout. They pick themselves player. Songa can be that player when he's when he's in Fuhrman fit. But he suddenly hasn't been I mean off to a didn't we your impressions where you've been the twenty four hours or so I was hearing reports on cheese day that Sanga was down because he pulled out he stopped to practice session early on Tuesday complaining of pain in his back. So there was a lot of speculation that. Very sadly, Joe for Sanga wouldn't be able to play which people were already sort of talking about what a shame. That would be. I think it was the twenty ten Davis Cup final. He had to miss with a knee injury. And you'll say Mr. twenty fourteen final Senate missed one of the matches missed the second reverse singles rubber in the the twenty fourteen funnel g to an injury. So seemed like this litany of issues for Songa was continuing. And yet lo and behold poorly. Capri they gets left in the cold. So yeah. Given that backdrop it. It did surprise me, bro..
