NBA Rumors: Pelicans Plan to Hire Former Sixer Willie Green as Head Coach

"Head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. So David Griffin has his next man to lead Zion Williamson. Last year. It was Stan Van Gundy the year before that it was Alvin Gentry. It's just now going to be the third head coach that Zion Williamson is going to have his third year in the league. Now, when you look at Willie Green Clearly has an extensive basketball background was in Philly, the Hornets in New Orleans. Atlanta. Play with the Clippers was with Orlando as a player the last few years, though, because just because you're a former player doesn't mean that you're going to be a great coach. You want to see what experience? Yes. Sometimes guys have a lot of experience. Sometimes guys have no experience. Willie Green was on the Golden State Warriors staff 2016 2019. And Is on the sun staff, too. Currently So this is someone That has been around the league now for a while. And Yeah. I don't know how

How Will Stan Van Gundy Fit With the Pelicans?

"Was a few weeks ago in the ringer NBA show that at the very tail end of the show I recall you saying. Keep an eye out for Stan van Gundy and New Orleans and since we last spoke That came to fruition Stan Van Gundy was hired by David Griffin and the New Orleans Pelicans I think when this all started with the pelicans ouster of Alvin gentry. Through the. Face Tyler had a former relationship with David. Griffin, we talk about my Tony possibly because he had a former relationship via the Phoenix Suns with David Griffin but they do land on Stan van, Gundy as their next head coach when you saw that news come across the wire, would you think great I'm happy I think he could bring some accountability to the team in terms of how much they need it on the defensive end of the floor they were horrific. On defense this season in San Andy. Of course, infamously famously I'm not sure once said build an effing wall and that the Pelicans need to do and I look forward to see what he can do now that he's back in the NBA but by the way like he failed in Detroit because he was coach. Angie 'em now he's just a coach right and he was always a good coach. He was good basketball coach and it was one of those cautionary tales of. It is two different skill sets number one it also in many cases can be two different motivations right if I am if I am the general manager and the coach now let's say I make a poor signing or a poor usage of money will sometimes I may want to use that guy to prove that I was right about this guy right and I know that you Still get into that with with a front offices and coaches anyway, right in in everybody wants to be responsible everybody wants to be right about the move they made. But when you then you're not doing the scouting of every other team on a regular basis, I know you have scouts you're certainly not doing that with college, but it's just a very hard job to do twofold and. Another cautionary tale of taking that over I mean everybody wants that power but I think we've seen two of these guys. Now fact three of these guys. Now, all of which I think you would say were subpar to very below average in that role but. We respect them as guys that are on the sidelines as basketball coaches. That is their expertise in that is doc rivers who took on that role Tom Thibodeau who took on that role and Stan Van Gundy who took on that role and yet got hired as coaches though it didn't go well at their last stops. I mean doc better than the other two but we thought. Hires because these guys are good basketball coaches who were miscast trying to run everything for sure absolutely and ultimately it's another good opportunity for him when New Orleans area there even though they have Zion, they have ingram granted these a restricted free agent. He'll likely back matched any offer sheet or whatever This is still sort of A. Team right now that can go in many different directions depending on how David Griffin wants to build it out and I look forward to seeing the ways in which Van Gundy, Utilize Zion and the ways in which he tries to get him going off because remember you know before all the three point shooting, we've seen the last ten years or so that has. Exploded with the warriors and the rockets and all these teams shooting lot of threes, the magic, Dwight Howard at center and four shooters around him in the late two thousands with anti head coach and they went to a finals. We're going to be lost to Kobe and the Lakers The had some good run they some really strong teams and in with Williamson. With the New Orleans Pelicans, I know they want to add another they don't want to go like all small Wall. With Zion at the five all the time it's it's just went to work but I, think van Gundy's pasts and what he could do now with this roster, it's kind of exciting to think about the possibilities with the different ways in which they can use ion but most importantly though and again, this is like with all the coaching hires we talk about I am more interested in the personnel changes who they draft, who do they try to trade for? Who Do they try to sign I am WHO's coaching the team, but you know I'm excited to see if they're able to get. Zion, going and creative ways that they weren't able to do as much during the season despite his success he posted up a lot man I. WanNa see some more pick and roll with Zion I wanNA see some more creativity with him, handling the ball and running pick and roll, and that will largely come from other personnel changes that come to the roster that allow that to happen. But Hey, man SVG had success with some different types of teams in the past and I look forward to seeing what he can do here with him, and that team has a good roster they under performed badly. Made sometimes teams underperformed because you look at their roster and you go man aol have the goods like that team underperformed I. Think so too. I think of course it I mean look I mean Lonzo I think Lonzo hit one shot in the bubble well, even though they're young that defense was bad even though they had good individual defenders, they've jrue holiday one of the best perimeter guard defenders, Ingraham and Lonzo. They were good defenders of the Lakers. They were the last two years. They were good. They were not good defenders last season with New Orleans. And Zion I, mean he was horrific. He was so bad on defense. It was it was really sad to watch. This is the guy who is blocking three point shots closing out from the opposite side of the paint at Duke just a year prior, which is why people wonder how much of it was fatigue coming back but season how much of it was the injury limiting him how much of it was effort I? Don't know I don't know what it was but regardless. He stunk on defense, and all of this needs to change next season for this team to be anything that have any chance of actually getting into the playoffs it can't be all

Zion Williamson Leaving NBA Bubble For Urgent Family Matter

"We begin today with news that Zion. Williamson has left the NBA bubble. Bubble in Orlando to attend an urgent family medical matter. The New Orleans Pelicans Zion intends to rejoin the team at an unspecified later date. We'll bond your thoughts on Zion leaving and what this could mean in the bigger picture, well Tony Me. The first thing is I hope this urgent family. Medical matter turns in becomes not urgent, and whoever this is, and whatever it is is improved better. So, that's the first thought and my second thought is. This is what people as they get older as they move from Zion's twenty today in their twenties, and thirties and forties is what we do it all the time. This is what deal with and players and coaches, and this is what your life becomes as you get older sadly, but necessarily the difference of course is this pandemic? The difference you you you normally you leave, and these guys have enough wherewithal to fry fly privately. If they want and most times they do and they they come back. Back and they juggle their tension between what is going on with their family member and ball, and they still have to do that, but now it's only you have protocol that you have to answer to, and you could be gone anywhere from say four days to fourteen days depending on things like if you're tested every day while you're gone, so we. We don't know and let's face it. There's twenty two teams in the bubble and not sixteen largely because Zion is one of those six extra teams in the NBA wanted to see him in the postseason. No question about that there's there's no reason on earth for the Washington. Wizards and the Sacramento Kings and whole bunch of these teams to be in this round, Robin and playoff to get into the playoffs in his created right because Zion, Williamson, second only in my opinion to Bron James as a television draw, and they WANNA. See Him in the playoffs. I Echo your statements that we hope that this isn't something traumatic for the family that should go without saying but testing the. The protocol by understanding correctly is you need to test on your own every day? In order that? When you come back, you can spend only four days out instead of fourteen. That's asking a lot of anyone when they've left the bubble to be able to do that to me. The larger question is, do you make exceptions know and to me for people like Zion and Lebron James who try to make an exception, but where where there is contagion, you can't do of course. By the Way Zion has team. Okay, and his team can help in that regard. They may have to send somebody WHO's in charge of testing. They want him air. No, there's no exception is the is the is the virus make an exception? Is the virus go? Lebron is gone, then look a little bit too big and strong for. Let me let me go over here. No, they're not doing that, so there's no exceptions, but you hope one that that this urgent matter becomes less urgent, and to that Zairean could get back quickly. Administer this I mean. The the Pelicans come on David. Griffin is not some dope going to do what they can as a franchise who support him and make sure he has what he needs to transition back to the bubble.

Is Zion Living Up to the Hype for the Pelicans?

"Were in Dallas for the pelicans overtime loss to the Mavericks. Second night of a back to back for New Orleans obviously but we didn't see the Zion. We've sort of been spoiled by over the last month. So what did you get from Zion? On Wednesday night. I saw someone who had to go through a little bit of adversity. There's two different things working against him in that Dallas Game One. It was the first time he played on a back to back. You didn't see his legs under him. Early actually play but gets the block on Williamson Williamson. Took his time getting up court. You may be subbing out of the ball game here. He is drew and Lonzo Ball. We're GONNA come on up to him. Hey man you you're right you you tired. Are you going to play? You GotTa pick one. The other thing. Going against him was Dallas they started Maxi Kluber alongside of kristaps porzingis specifically for Zion Williamson two. That might have been forcing a psychotic burst that is just perfectly played deep that still by Dallas Cleveland's doing A. They went to the formula. That's been working. Which is the. We're GONNA get the tallest guy we have can defend him to do it. And then have another seven footer. Awesome plus footer at the Rim Ryan got blocked inside again. It's not possible in less. Cleber is being this physical and allowing time for kristaps ticket over there. Lieber six ten obviously porzingas seven three. Those have been the only really match ups that have given him problems when they played the box. Janas guarded him and then you have the Lopez twins behind him. Protecting the RIM defers Lakers game. Anthony Davis guarded him. And you had jovial and Dwight rim so that combination kind of went against his favor so walk me through a little bit of the process on the back to back portion of it because this is obviously part of the Adjustment For Zion. So where do you find the line? If you're the PELICANS in trying to get him experienced doing things like back to backs that he'll be asked to throughout his career and then also sort of adjusting him since he is still getting fresh on the court after an injury yeah so initially David Griffin the PELICANS executive vice president of basketball operations who should have a shorter title. It's a mouthful say every time I don't know I mean if you're going to have a title let's go big with it like if I'm going to have a business card the whole front of it's going to be my title and the backs. Just going to say fits. There's not not my first name. Just I'm pretty sure that's what his business card says. I haven't seen one but I'm pretty sure that's it has to read like that initially As I was coming back from the injury. Grif said he wasn't there. Were probably going to take it easy on back to backs. Now the good thing that kind of worked into their favor there was January. Twenty second was when he made his debut since then the Tuesday Wednesday back to back that they just had was the first time they had a back to back so they got to let him get games under his belt. He mentioned to his own Tuesday. You know I have to do the recovery if I want to perform the way that I'm capable of performing as you try to push for or is this your mutual agreement Little bit of both but I need a push for myself because I gotTa do the recovery of I want to be able to perform. We do every night with that. Being said coming off the knee injury there were reports that he was learning how to walk differently. How to run differently? I mean when they're watching him and they're monitoring and what are they looking for his indicators of his health very funny to me because I think George Sodano said that I think on ESPN broadcast and it just kind of blew up. He's learning how to walk and anybody who's been through physical therapy at any point that I for any sort of knee. Injuries foot injury. Whatever it is can tell you. They will relearn how to walk in physical therapy. The learning how to walk and run differently was more about little things in his gate that they wanted to fix. The biggest thing that they really wanted to correct at that time was how he landed when you go back and watch how he landed at. Duke with these huge one handed slam traffic. He's landing on one foot one of the big things you see. Now when he goes up for a dunk whether it's an alley whether he's just throwing it down to hands. He tries to land on two feet as much as possible. Zeile yeah that the to hand flush and a great entry fee for Lonzo Ball over Kunst buck to finish that would KUPA gotta be thinking. What in the world so. It's little things that maybe you don't know at nineteen years old that the Pelicans are trying to instill in him so they can take a little bit of stress off of his knees. The biggest thing you just said is nineteen if you listen to Zion. He'll make sure he tells you. He's nineteen in just about every other interview. I feel like I mean but doesn't right like we are so busy trying to make him either the savior of a lead. That doesn't need to be saved or the reason that we're over. Hyping somebody to the point that people ridicule how much we talk about it but you look at it at some point. Say this is a nineteen year old kid. We're talking about that is absolutely crushing in a limited sample size. So let's turn the tone positive here for a second you're looking at a nineteen year old kid. What he's doing is unprecedented right. It's absolutely unprecedented. Feel like every other night we were finding ways to start a sentence with Zion Williamson. Doing something and we ended it with Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neill or Tim Duncan or wilt. Chamberlain the goes on and on and on. And you're like that doesn't make sense.

Dog noses detect heat, the world faces coronavirus, and scientists search for extraterrestrial life

"Up this week. I talked with online news editor David Brim about how dogs noses may be able to detect heat next. We have international editor Martin answering. He's GonNa tell us about the latest news on Corona virus finally in an interview from the triple. As annual meeting producer. Meghan Cantwell talks with Jill. Tarter about the latest technologies being used to search for. Alien Life. Now we have on news editor David Griffin. And he's here to share his favorite online story from the week. Hi Dave Sarah. Okay so I think I know this is your favorite. It involves animals doesn't just involve animal. Seren involves one of my favorite animals which is a dog domesticated animals domesticated animals. Yes yeah so yeah so we love to do dog and cat stories or as much as we can and this is a really cool on because we sort of feel like we kind of figured everything out about dogs and even cats. I mean we've lived with them for ten thousand fifteen thousand years doesn't like there'd be any more surprises but the study says there's Least one surprise left with dogs. We didn't know about right. So if your dog sitting there looking at you funny tilting its head. And you're like what if it what is it might be sensing an odd heat signature in the room. We already know dogs. Noses are super amazing hair smells sensitivity is about a hundred million times more sensitive than ours. Were this new study showing that actually dogs don't detect sense can actually detect heat as well They detect heat with their nose. That's right. They're sensing weak thermal radiation in so dogs like a lot of mammals. They have this kind of naked smooth skin on the tips of their noses around their nostrils. Our noses are wet and cold as quite as innovative as dogs are and so. This coldest is actually kind of a clue because you know in order to sense heat. You can't be hot right otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell if something is like if you have a fever or if you have a warm hand you touch somebody with a fever. You're not gonna be able to sense it very well but if you spend five minutes outside it's really cold and you touch something head. Even if they're normal temperature it's going to feel really warm to you and sort the similar idea with dog noses because it's cold and wet it's able to be able to text up even just sort of marginally warmed hasn't even super warm dies had cold wet noses and actually have a hard time thinking of another animal. That has a nose like this but I know there are other animals that can sense thermal signals. Have the same kind of thing going on right sir. Like vampire bats can actually sense thermal radiation Certain species of snakes can do that and they also both these also have colder noses and so the fact that dogs also had these sort of legendarily cold those sort of gives a hint and researchers wanted to test a new. Study that we're going to see. Well can dogs actually do this? This is something that's always tricky testing the senses of an animal their ability to perceive something. How did they set it up in this study? Will they work with dogs who please So this was mercifully. Not An experiment done on. Cats were much different outcome but the first experiment. They have three pet dogs and they had that choose between a warm objects and my warm. We mean about thirty one degrees. Celsius so slightly warmer that room temperature and then a room temperature object and he please objects about one point six meters away from the dogs. The dogs were touching these objects. They actually had to be able to sniff out this heat at a distance The office looked and smelled exactly the same. Or How do they know? They smelled the same. I assume they controlled for that. I mean I assume that these these are basically objects. I don't think we described in the story but these are pretty bland object. I think it's a couple of boards with a heat thing in the middle of it so these are not very olfactory interesting objects and they're exactly the same Dave. When you heat something up it does smell different. How do we know that? The dog isn't king and on that. And they have these amazing sniffers will the researchers another set of experiments this time with thirteen dogs and they were able to get them in an effort. Marai scanner which measures brain activity and they saw that when the dogs were sniffing out objects that were slightly warmer. There were areas of the brain. There were activating there. Were not the same areas at activate when they smell something so it was if specific region the brain. It's to be lighting up but again it was only when the dogs were detecting thermal radiation. They did not see these regions light up when the dogs were. Just try to sniff out an object. That was just room temperature. So that combined with the previous experiment does not conclusive but it really adds up to this idea. That dogs really do have. This can actually sniff out. Warmness a not a sense with their with their noses. Why am I that BE USEFUL FOR DOGS? Or THEIR ANCESTORS. Were we know that these other animals like the vampire bats stakes these it in hunting? So they're not just hunting by looking at things but since emotional smelt heat especially for stakes is really important and so what this suggests is dogs and we all know. Dogs are descended from Gray Wolves. Who were very effective hunters and rules need to be able to sniff out pray and you can imagine that if if they're just relying on smell alone they may be missing something. That's maybe hiding or may be covered up by other odors but if they can sense heat as well especially heat at a distance that's GonNa make them much more effective hunters of any warm blooded prey and so the feeling is that dogs may have inherited this ability from their ancestor of the Grey Wolves. I guess they can try to test out next they can. They can try to experiment with wolves. It'll probably be a little trickier thank you so much. Dave thanks David. "That as that made sense it made sense to grow the next champion as they third guy and i think what you're seeing is you can't take three of the top five players in the world and sticking together and let them like that but you might be able to put two of the top five players in the world in temple fifteenth on that team right so i i think that's possible but i don't think anybody who's a signature shoe guy wants to be part of you know being viewed as the third will i i think it's just a matter of how you build your team you know toronto won a championship see outcome was probably as good throughout that whole period of time is anybody was so if seok changes hands is he part of building is a super team like this all becomes about media perception and all becomes that perceptions greater than reality guys the impact winning and losing games and give you a chance to be great are more important than guys would name recognition so if the guy's name recognition don't wanna join forces anymore i don't care i just need to both a team in that's the way the greatness king show itself and its attracted to be energy we create for everybody maybe especially in the western conference everybody building a team when the news came late night that the lakers working i have three they were gonna have to the clippers are gonna have to i spent the collective sigh of relief around the league not that anybody who's running the clippers but nobody wants to deal with that reality who's gonna make maybe make the leap looked like is that fair just say like a little bit cy okay nobody wanna do with those three i want you why lebron yeah so initially when when the news came out and started a co why had chosen the clippers they will literally literally a momentary sigh of relief and new orleans because we hold the laker picks moving forward in vote that trio together would have been a lot scarier in terms of what those picks mayor may not be worth at least in the short term they would have been scarier ending almost instantaneously the news the paul george with going there as well happened in i think there was a reality of boy it's an arms race in elway an we had entered free agency saying look if land the plane on everything we wanna do those teams better the nuts there's teams that are more prepared to win but he who is clearly better than us clippers they answered that question for it's pretty clear this is a lot of fun a lot of fun sprinting back with you this time running the pelicans a little i will share the rest of the summer league in training camp thank thank you rush had a great time.

"Sort of championships is a destination well if we could just achieve this will will will will have reached the pinnacle and the reality is championships they're not a destination their state of mind it's a it's building a championship organization and i think there are a lot of organizations they're incredibly well run they've not been fortunate enough to win a title the teams that won the title one better run they just had a better set of circumstances firm which supply their craft and i think when you look at the teams that are doing a really good job in our league and there's more and more of them all the time so much more competitive environment from me front office standpoint well learning from each other but sure if you could choose win a championship that's great but what you wanna learn while you're building towards a championship is how to create that culture in that environment the feeds itself in a sustainable way like san antonio has my team england patriots have like one saints have won a bullet culture like that and championships in i'm i feel really blessed to have gotten a learn this they're not a destination they're just sort of the residue of being successful in terms of culture and how you implemented it always feels like it comes from who you're best players golden state's culture was steph steph curry and klay thompson san antonio's culture was with tim duncan manu tony parker now that doesn't mean the leadership there didn't provide everything they needed they did why did he end in new orleans it's it's zion williamson and and and the players you drafted and you're bringing a jj redick you know like there's not even a legal doesn't want jj redick with their roof 'em like indiana is the players dictated indian health yeah for sure and i think in are circumstance who drew holiday is going to be dictated a great deal of it and you know when we brought steve nash back the phoenix and gave him a sixty six million dollar deal at the time everybody said we were crazy and they would never lives up to that number at cetera and he ended up being two time mvp because of the team is built to really maximize all of his gifts we we put the right pieces around him systematically the right pieces where around in we feel like drew holiday can take a jump similar that if the right pieces around him in culturally we're going to be very reflective of who drew is drew is all about winning he's a two way player that will sacrifice whatever it takes to be successful as a human being it's about as good as i've ever been within the league i loved his family lawrence a special special person herself you really feel like you're gonna want to grow with these people overtime ended our family and his family are are are going to blend into one and we hope because of the presence of drew holiday because of the presence of jj redick and the derrick favors each one more really cow high caliber veteran human beings then the young kids were sprinkling in will learn how to do this the right way an outlaw the spurs when they had those three guys teaching the next generation what it means the spurs basketball we we hope that those veteran pros will help a young kids learn what it means to be professionals and hopefully will arrive at what it means to be a pelican that'll be a successful situation about this earlier this morning about whether players of his generation ever experienced what he must be solved in together for so long in memphis not one of them even when things start getting sideways around them they they remain committed to wanting to figure it out there we wanna win here we wanna win in this place we wanna win together that is not how it goes anymore me an m guys are trading out i mean they're just treating each other out 'em after very short window small george was two seasons in amazon would again is gonna go play with why with the clippers on is that going to be the.

"Championship that's the model for how to do it now you're model is gonna be completely different but but i guess rather learned a lesson the victory that it yeah no question you learn a bit yeah no question in and again it it wasn't it wasn't a process you would ever hope to replicate because of the circumstances couldn't ever exist again in the way they did again lebron's on one year deals he's come from a championship environment our players had to that point then in the lottery several years in a row end we hit not organically learn to place for each other golden state had a nucleus together in clay staff and dream on that went through battles together they lost together they starting to really bond in losing together and then they were able to figure out how to win together and make cherished that journey a little bit differently than are guys that are guys were told you've never been good enough here's lebron be good enough now that's what they outside world said to them that's a horrific way to raise young players in nb eight and there's not a lot you can do about it when someone of the magnitude of lebron is there because if you took him off of any team and this was proven when he went to the lakers you take him off anything goes to the finals you put him on the next one expectation is if he doesn't go to the finals of as a failure and it's not gonna be hit failure it'll be the failure of the franchise and so it's a difficult thing to go through fisher you imagine your whole career what it's gonna be like the way what it's gonna feel what what you imagine what elation release no and i think that's probably the most important thing that we learned in the processes you view you know it was a twenty fifth year i believe twentyfourth year at that time we had been indian dna and you.

"It is something much bigger in every single day that's what the covered you'll be like what is your responsibilities organization he is still a teenager i think these situations you want to alleviate as much pressure there's enough from outside like as an organization now talked about what's the responsibility to help manage all coming well i think first starters it's a hold them accountable in the same way you would any other teammate you know he's he's he's going to be a part of the team many he's going to be treated it as such i don't think we look at this says this is about zion zion doesn't look at it that way ryan recognizes this is about the pelicans and he just wants to be the creative to the group as he can he's he's just a native winner and so it won't be it won't be about him and it won't be about his star it'll be about what weaken achieved together because that's what he thinks all the time so what we have to do is do a much better job as an organization certainly than we did in cleveland when did he way of of sort of isolating me outside noise in build a family in such a way that we can really be open with one another and very direct with one another about what expectations are because that's how his family his rage zion and i i feel like it's gonna be a very natural fit but certainly a lot of the things we learned along the way with lebron and kevin love and kyrie and all of the nonsense that came around having any team of that magnitude that will help as we move forward for sure that environment in cleveland in in juanita have something wasn't it wasn't environment i think you need agreement that's where it seemed like a times people were always getting hit it against other people blame was you know there was everyone patching blame or grabbing credit and and that was part of a struggle there was it unavoidable in cleveland wasn't set up with no way to get around her if you look back and said well i wish we could have done that and and i learned this like how do you look back at it in value way we're you want a championship so many other words like any and it worked because you one but what they're us the road to win a championship and it wasn't terribly enjoyable the go through the process heading up into heading up to that because there were so many things that mattered more than the we of our team culturally we were individuals and we were trying to gel individuals rather than raising a family from the beginning and it's because when lebron's on a series of one year deals you have to view what you're doing is win that championship it's you view it more as a sprint then you do the holistic approach that you could take when you start from the beginning so in new orleans we've been able to start from the beginning into some sort of grow this and i'm mindful sustainable way when lebron lands on cleveland again any expectation is you better win a championship now the game changed so radically but it wasn't really possible to do a lot of the things you would have liked to have done because you didn't learn how to win together it was okay none of these kids have ever one but now we have to win the championship it just wasn't organic it wasn't real what what it was was a way to supply the trade of team building we feel like we did in exceptional job of finding fit so that will help us moving forward but that experience is so unlike anything i ever hoped have again from a team building standpoint because it wasn't organic in any way shape or form it was just zero to a hundred and you better win right in in the the the model the way in which you brought in players that is not anything you probably ever be able to do before it was straight a couple of picks to create space like like the version audio writing me because you had an owner that was willing to go deep and luxury tax you could do things that almost you work in replicant anymore you unit going in you're interviewing shit in new orleans and say hey like i wanna.

"You really looking back i really felt you believed because there was a momentum to what was going on in their in there was the momentum is going on with your organization aunt and you you've convinced me that it might happen when the numbers said well probably not but it did yeah you know it's funny from the day i took over i told alvin gentry we're gonna win the lottery and that came from a belief in something jeff cohen one of the owners in cleveland when i was there is now no longer withstand group jeff cohen one three lotteries in forty years of representing the team in the back room and before every one of them he would say if you can see it you couldn't believe it you just have to see it and so we room very intently visualized winning and we started the connect to that energy in that feeling so album and i both walked in there that day were on fire with belief that this was going to happen in it really was something from me i suppose speaking in into existence thing but it was genuinely in right now like in i get goosebumps thinking about this you can really change your vision of yourself and you're circumstance simply by believing in it and that's what happened we were really fortunate obviously dumb luck but to some degree you you have to generate energy is it allows for that that night after the draft lottery you meet privately with zion williamson with his family is that conversation like that yeah it was really a special moment actually 'em alvin and i got to meet with him at nine thirty that night the league it arranged but whoever won the lottery spend time with them and with designed by himself for about twenty minutes and we were so taken by him as a kid i asked him if his parents were they're an easter they were and we had them come down to the room we're in and we spent about an hour and a half together that night as a as a group and watching alvin gentry which with zion stepdad lee lee anderson talk about old south south carolina basketball players only alvin would have known 'em he's really be only human being could have been the head coach team at that moment in i sort of remove myself from it watching zion and his stepfather and alvin talk about basketball and had just been overwhelming sense of gratitude this human being who's going to join our family the player himself he's gonna grow any volve overtime and hopefully he turns out to be a very very good player you hope he's a great player sunday but he's dedicated to his own greatness and watching them interact with each other and understanding how he was raised to view himself is just a part of a team was really a special moment your responsibility now you're you started already here you've done it all along you try to now it's you're like the season ticket sales are great and you're not giving back one of those prefer being able draft zion williamson but in this day and age when there is a phenomenon in easy phenomenon if you spend that unlike anything we've seen in college basketball and however long college basketball doesn't create that anymore and he created that with duke but just start you know what comes with this you've been around it with a run at a different level where every day every movement summer league he banged his knee i mean there are a million guys suddenly banging their name going over him.

"Take lebron spin on a series of one year deals with cleveland when when he signed a four year deal in elway he had signed a max deal like that since simon miami so he had an amount of leverage because he was willing to forego that money because he was already making so much money off the court so with some of these guys that comes into play is well they're willing to take a chance on the year to year deal because they can so that's one thing that i think happens the other thing that i think is happening along the way is because there's they fixed the date in which you can exercise they a max deal eighteen months before that all of the media is talking about so and so's not gonna stay there and we nobody wants to leave he wants to leave until they become so much noise around that player doing in the absence of fixed timeline would never happened so it's a fascinating thing you you said it's the pressure on organizations now to hit it in to let let's say you don't win the lottery let's say you get this fifty six wherever you are is how you would have approached the rebuild of the reshaping this organization would you have been out in free agency if if you didn't have die on or maybe the number two pick maybe would have looked at you would have value the number two pick that way to there's but those great interest in drew holiday i mean it wasn't a contender in a legal i don't think calls you try to get it through in i think they just pretty good offers if you don't get one of two or one are are you on free agency with jj redick are you bringing derrick favors what would it be that i don't think it would do that dramatic of a difference in terms of what one would have tried to achieve it probably would have been pretty dramatic difference in terms of viability they get it done i i think think winning the lottery was one of the first of many sort of loud noisy statements but this is not the pelicans you once new mrs benson's investment in staffing trajan langdon swim cash and myself and they're now sending what were doing the practice facility where where all things stacked act on top of that lottery news they made it so the free agents looked at our situation differently than they would have in the absence of winning the lottery maybe it didn't really change are thought process it just may be accelerated the timeline not in the draft lottery you and i are standing by the the tv podium we have you you look beanie i and you said they were gonna win this were gonna win tonight and i said well okay you know but but we had to know based time though leveling of the odds none of us should have been surprised at the way it all fell off that's what this was designed to do which is the discourage 'em tanking and that's what happened but that night i i you send it to me before we went up there sometimes people are talking the talk but.

"The kind of quality veterans they can teach zion and other young draft picks jackson hayes and look you know alexander walker what it means to be a pro and where excited about all three of those kids were when you started even before i'm sure even when you were evaluating the job in imagining what you would do and you i'm sure you laid out a plan you did lay out a plan and you're meetings we interviewed for the job you've got a blueprint in your mind what anthony davis trade it would look like based on history based on the leverage of the moment with the lakers how did you piece together in your mind what this is hostal look like for a player of his caliber and then of course it's always about timing surface days to yeah so we were really fortunate that rich paul representing lebron james in the lakers need to put in another star with lebron sort of dovetails with the fact that anthony pick the time he had picked wanna move on and there's really only one destination where they were confident he would sign so we knew that if if you're going to get to a place they didn't have that level of confidence the president's that we would be looking at could potentially be more like the quiet leonard deal when he went to toronto or more likely oklahoma city deal when he went from indian at oklahoma city that would have been our reality but because we're in a situation where he was willing to resign signing elway we had are sights set a little higher and we were fortunate that it all came together and the way they did there was enough lebron's from other teams the really kind of continue down that path a rap lincoln was incredibly a fourth right throughout the process and i think dealt with us in a very fair wage there were grateful what the way it came about i think in a perfect world in boston if if hypothetically if kyrie irving what's coming back and anthony would have been part of their future there might have been a whole different bidding scenario 'em did the market i'm gonna say the again you've got out of really couldn't get much more from the lakers then you did but did it become clearer once boston boston was maybe not in a position to go far in is they might have been if if they thought they were bringing in anthony davis to keep kyrie irving did that change how she yes certainly in i understand what it means to make a deal with the star player when you don't have to trade them like oklahoma city was with paul george that trade the clippers made they gave up for more for paul george and then what they would have given up just paul george they gave up what they give give up the have hawaiian paul george in no question in so that's what that trade represents so saint presby did a marvelous job of leveraging that but he wasn't in a situation where he had the trade the player and are situation we're in a situation where it was clear that anthony and he was ready to move along and it wasn't clear that he is willing to stay anywhere other than elway so i think that probably played in boston thinking more than the kyri aspect of it because boston intended the stay in doesn't tend to stay elite they wanna compete at the highest level i think the risk factor of him not staying put the trade conversations more in the space of the other deals we talked about is what happened in elway with both ellie teams and the price that each paid a to get a once you get anthony davis and then you get paul.

"A chance to get a new york philadelphia now like you just take that job over anything else if feels like marketplace is less a part of the decision in choosing to run organization how would you like yeah for sure and obviously winning a championship in a small market in cleveland i know it can be achieved now dan gilbert and his team were willing to spend any amount of money to achieve it and no one's ever put more into the luxury tax and dan did were the first team in history in cleveland they go from being a max cap space thirteen to eight tax team same year so damn gave us some serious competitive advantages but because we achieved in a market like that we saw what it meant to aim market like that to win and in particular any football first market like cleveland where the browns of always been king you understand how much it means to kind of turn that narrative and make any city like new orleans basketball city so the challenge of that was exciting to us it's were not just in terms of the people that i am my life meritas were not the sex appeal of the big city is and what it's about it's about community it's about the people you're with everyday in mrs clinton and her team very much looked at it the same way we did which is where caretakers of a sacred trust and all we're really doing is taking forward the hopes and dreams of far community in so romans were the perfect place to do that is sort of emotional state of new organization when you took over the anthony davis saga i think had it takes a lot out of place when goes on i think it it deflates it organization and hangs over the thing every day when you walked in the door what would the temperatures took down the toilet take it on everybody there yeah so it's interesting when we walked in cleveland the bond had just left i got there in september of ten labontes left in july obtaining it felt like you were jumping into a burning building in those situations where we had sort of ultimate green light to do we needed to do and it was if we didn't succeed with all going to be someone else's fault in this particular case when we walked in the door i felt very much like there were a lot of really good people there and it just hadn't for whatever reason all come together and i think mrs benson by her own admission had just gotten any opportunity to really invest in the process so as soon as she did have that opportunity in brought us in she was a hundred percent committed to winning to be successful and she's giving us the bandwidth do that i think a lot of the people that were there felt previously like maybe they didn't have that prior to mrs pence and assuming control 'em so i i think they were all optimistic once i i came on board but what's happened is everyday has been another bigger statement about ownerships commitment to winning and so we've been able to stack successes on themselves to this point so hopefully that pays off and wins and losses because if it doesn't it doesn't mean much stated mission initially was you try try to convince anthony davis to give new orleans another chance let's shelves the trade request let's come the training camp a let's let's try to give me an off season to improve the team did it feel realistic to you or did it feel like i gotta do that i got exhausted avenue before i go next i did was every time you thought you'd be able to sell that settings open minded to.

Every Team's Top Potential Free-Agent Targets After 2019 NBA Draft

"You about to be immersed in woke bombs, because it is that time of the year. Our NBA insider, everyone else joins us. Whoa. Just before we get into free agency, which is going to be interesting. We are now what twelve hours removed from the draft. Your initial takes who won who lost? Well, I thought the two teams who made the most significant trade last night. New Orleans, and Atlanta, both fared very well maximize the assets that they had Atlanta moving up into number four. To get. The hunter from Virginia. Maybe most versatile forward in this draft the best defensive player player doesn't need the ball in his hands. They've got a lot of scoring on Atlanta team. And then Cam, reddish, who is probably a top three or four talent taking a little bit of a flyer on him at ten and then New Orleans, you know, their ability to keep expanding this Anthony Davis trade. They got Jackson Hayes at center beyond Ziya Williamson David Griffin, thanks, that's going to give them in the long term. Maybe the most athletic front court in the league pick up another first round pick. And now also have nearly thirty million dollars in salary cap space to go out and free agency. And some veterans to this team that could make it conceivable that, that the pelicans could make the playoffs in their first year without Anthony Davis. And usually when you trade a player of that, caliber. From a small market, you're going into a full rebuild. But I think the winning the lottery being able to get Zion Williamson has a lot of David Griffin to go and just the opposite direction. And they're set up really well in New Orleans, talking about teams on the way up in there seems kind of scratching our heads about that would be the Celtics. What what's going on there? Well, listen, they're preparing to lose career being Al Horford in free agency. They've got in the neighborhood of twenty six twenty seven twenty eight million dollars in cap space, they could use that to go after Senator to replace Al Horford. Nicola Busa vich in Orlando's a free agent. The Lakers have interest there if they can get the cap space for him if they want to put all in one player, but which is at priority in Orlando. You know, there's I think there's motivation on both sides to get a deal done. But if they weren't able to, you know, Boston's and position to swoop in there and try to make a deal with vich Boston still has some really good young players. Now they go from team that thought they were ready to compete for championships to a team now built around Jason Tatum. Jalen Brown Gordon Hayward who still on the right side of thirty years old, and who probably will have a much better season this year than last. But they've got to address that point guard position in Boston. They obviously have taken a step back if both of those players are gone free agency and that's and that's how they feel. That's how it appears right now talking to Adrian ward NASCAR ESPN NBA insider on the show Pennzoil performance line. And something we had Brian win horse on earlier. We're talking a little bit about as teams you mentioned move things around or creating cap space right now. The idea that the seventy Sixers with some available cap space could potentially take shot or try and get a meeting with Kawhi Leonard coming up in free agency. Tell us what you think about the viability of that. Oh, I think they'll get a meeting. I mean listen getting a meeting and being a serious contender for free agent are two different things and very often the relationships in place that will allow a team to get a meeting I thought all along Philadelphia would probably get a meeting for Leonard. I think the Knicks will also get a meeting with Leonard, but the front runners are still Toronto and the clippers. But. Players and their representatives will meet often sometimes as a courtesy with other teams but their focus in Philadelphia is keeping their own. And that's Jimmy Butler Tobias Harris and JJ Rettig. He's an important part of that group too, and he's coming off an outstanding season. It's going to be expensive to keep that team together. They knew that when they made the trades for Harris and for Butler, but their priorities to keep them and also find a way to keep there. You know, I think they may get a meeting with Leonard, but I don't think they're going to be a physician to sign them or insider, eighty ask is with us right now. Whoa. What, what are we hearing? The latest on the, the possibility that there might be a sign and trade deal that keeps Kevin Durant in Golden State, while he's rehabbing. So he gets his money, and then they'll be able to get something for money moves on trade. I don't know anything about that. I think the focus and Golden State right now is to try to sign Kevin Durant to keep Kevin Durant in with the warriors. They're going to offer him a five-year max contract, just as they were before the Killys injury. You know all the options that were there for Kevin Durant before that injury are still there. All the teams that were recruiting him that we're willing to essentially offer them the full scholarship, nobody's pulling back on the book or the meal plan, he's getting full scholarship from everybody. Maximum. Allowable for years with another team five years with the warriors, and they're determined to try to keep him keep Klay Thompson. Great analogy, by the way. As far as actual galleys of free agent when you can actually talk and deal with players. Forgetting that how much of the race is going on right now in the timing issues of these teams talking back door to try and get these things done. Now I mean we live in the real world, Mike and free agency started weeks ago just did. And so it's ongoing. You cannot keep people from talking, there are different philosophies out there. There are different styles going at it. I'm not saying every team is out every free agent is out, literally to go shitting numbers. But are there, some yes there are, and that's always been the case? But I think because of how many teams have so much you have over ten I think ten eleven teams with over twenty million dollars in space and teams who could go get it with one trade. Or waving a player who's got a partial guarantee. So there's lots of moving parts in this free agency teams don't want to be left behind. but you could also you can talk to your own player all the way through boston was able to talk about extension with al horford and it didn't look like they were not close on the numbers and that's why horford is headed in the free agency he feels they have some confidence there's a much bigger offer or offers out there for

I mean on a scale you, you understand what it takes to make deals like this happen in terms of just the cap math like how complicated, you think we're we're getting into a point right now? Larry, in terms of what the Lakers are trying to execute like forget, whether or not it'll lead to thirty two million. I mean just trying to clear their cap to this degree. This is advanced this requires a real Capitola GIS to really. I mean, and it required one going into the, the negotiations with David Griffin in the first place. I think there's a lot to navigate here in a lot of potential end lines. In other words teams around the league. I mean, they, they really need to be talking to people like you or people, you know, having people like that, on their staff that just like their job is just know this, this is what you do, is what you bring the table just like you need. Analytics, people just like any great coaches, you know, both player development and gain coaches, just like you need great scouts. You need people who, who know the cap and know how to work within it, because it makes all the difference in the world between getting a guy like collide Leonard or a Kemba Walker. And having to settle for way less. Larry Coon, Jim of sports. The sports business classroom. Follow him on Twitter at Larry Koon. Larry, thank you so much for making time for us. We appreciate especially last minute. Thank you again. I'm not doing anything else. So no worries. Right. Sounds at ten and two minutes. Thanks again. There is Larry Koon. We've got Albert Albert Lamont, Albert Ahmad, who is also a cat biologist, and you heard Larry say that he is very sharp these things, he apparently does think that so Larry doesn't believe the Lakers. Can get thirty two and a half Albert does? We'll talk to Albert next. Their hope on the other side is there. So there's hope in five minutes, stay tuned. All right. So Donald show here on ESPN LA became an ski hanging out with us today, and we've just been a whirlwind, basically, what's been going on here for the last forty five minutes, so. Well, it's tweeted. "But I think the one thing David Griffin has been pretty determined to do here is to kind of reshape this restaurant of flies. Not look at tank, he's not looking to go younger. He has a core. You know, post Anthony Davis, regardless of who they bring back of Zion Williamson of drew holiday, and in, I think they think they can be very competitive with the deal that brings back, you know, a couple of starting level players, and, and maybe another I Trump pick and you look around the less, and you look at some teams who were in the playoffs who might not come back as strong as they were a year. Oh, and I don't think it's out of the question for New Orleans to believe especially if they really believe Zaia Williamson that he can have an impact as a rookie and they could be back in the postseason. Well, what do we know about from Lakers perspective? If anyone is off the table because usually in these situations, right? Like there's always someone that teams don't wanna trade like, is there anything to that with the Lakers? Well, the, the one thing that I've been told his not then included is cow cruising. But that's usually in context of if you want those to you don't get Koos month you on Kusa got hit, you know, say hypothetically, the pick there. It's always like a sliding scale right, generally, generally planning scale, you know, Boston, probably, you know, that's I think the conversation with Jason Tatum, if they put Jason Tatum in a deal, I don't know that they have put him in an offer, but it's always, you know, a name could be in a trade, but it also means want you to take back some bad contracts. And we want you to give up a pickle like, so it's all within the context of wh-, what might you have to surrender it included name like that in there. I think among those two teams, you know, Jason Tatum potentially as a singular player, the most appealing more appealing than I think any of the young Lakers players, and obviously, he's, he's an outstanding prospect. But that's a big risk for Boston to trade. Jason Tatum, who's a player, they could probably build around going forward to put him in a deal with a player who's telling you that he's going to be a rental. And they've got to decide how seriously, they want to take that. And how and how much they believe in their program, and their city and, and their organization that they think they could sell PD on on a future there. You mentioned before woes that this could end up being something that requires a thirteen to get involvement. Maybe a four team who knows what teams are there that you think we could be keeping an eye on in terms that might wanna get involved in this somehow. Well, I think. Especially because you're around the draft. And you know, look at teams with multiple picks in the first round teams who could teams with salary cap space who can pick a contract on, you know, generally, you know, there's always I it's, it's, it's usually pretty fluid jumping in as a third or fourth team. You'll see they'll just go down the list, GM's will and, and try to see, you know, kind of cherry pick players or or assets uncertain rosters. They'll give a call for that team and say, hey, we. Which would you like to get involved in what we're doing here and then vice versa? You're going to have teams who, who are going to call LA and going to call David Griffin or type technically Boston and say, we'd like to get involved in here. Can we you know, we have cats cast base?.

"You know, that choi- would look at one in one in going to free agency, and two thousand twenty but if if it's Toronto, or if it's the clippers that are going to offer him, one hundred forty million dollars, you take it, and you don't look back doing it Bobby, our teams allowed to speak to their upcoming free. Just now or do they have to wait until June thirtieth? Well, you can certainly do around. I mean, what you're doing is you're talking with their agents here, kind of behind the scenes here. You're not doing getting, you're not sitting down with them and doing doing the presentation here, but yeah, you're, you're getting you have a baseline when you get into when you get into that last week, Gina SARS what the market is going to be for that specific player who is probably going to be, who you are going to be bidding against your, so you're not walking into the June thirtieth meeting, which alive, I with, with any surprises. I the other story that sort of bouncing around out there is that David Griffin is reportedly entertaining. The concept of. A, a multi team trade. Now for Anthony Davis, obviously here with the with the Lakers Lakers fan. And, and here we are on the Laker station, we would be thrilled to get Anthony Davis, sorta walk as through what a deal for Anthony Davis, could look like why I think it changes a lot from where they wear in, in February when we didn't know what that pick was going to be now it's the fourth picnic, drap, I think a lot of come down to what Griff thinks of renting grim Lonzo ball counties. And you know as, as woes report reported, you know, they're looking for thirteen maybe turn a Lonzo ball into a, a lottery pick where maybe a Brandon Brandon Ingram here, and I thought all along that Boston has the right assets to get a deal done. But now it's matter of fact, will they pull the trigger on and I think there's some certainly hasn't been because of what was going to happen with Irving, the summer. But when you look at what else is out there. Yes, the Lakers have the, the right mix of, of assets, the fourth pick future picks and young players matters if staying healthy. And in the report yesterday Griffin is, you know the checklist there. You know, it's I think in all star young player that has all star potential a really good lottery, pick here. I think I think he will have a hard time finding that all-star out there. And first of all, most of the all stars are free agency, some so that kind of limits, most of the Plainfield right there. But I think if you look at with coups MO or ball in Ingram to those guys matter of staying healthy. There is the potential, there down the road to be an all star and the fourth pick draft. I think the I don't think you can look away from that even in draft at, you know, it is a little bit top three heavy year reported that, that Griff is Griffin is interested in trying to get something done by this weekend. Talk about the significance of the timing of how all this. Gonna potentially work. It's huge doing basically kinda put an artificial deadline here because draft next Thursday the twentieth. Do not wanna make a deal with the Lakers come mid July. And it is not a player that they've selected that for, for example, if the Lakers select areas Darlan from band of what four and that is not a player that David Griffin that fun office likes then that might be somewhat of a deal break here. So you need if you're going to pursue this, you need to have some type of framework of a deal into either this weekend or early next week, where David Griffin in that front office is, is meeting with Jarrett whole Kover from Texas Tech or the Andre hunter from Virginia in getting getting a comfort level for them where although can't be consummated until July six that Griff is basically telling rob Pelinka who to pick here, and I think if there's not a framework of a deal, I think it makes a little bit harder to to try to get something done there. Bobby marks, no relation to Groucho or Carl joins us here. Bobby is their chance..

"Like people like basically racing to see if they could what they can do to sixty on the cars, like I actually fine that is an real people driving them. I thought that was fine application of the real people, but just don't don't do the real even if they're real people, we also know that you have specifically selected which which audio parts, and they're going to walk by Joe that cards trash, you're not using that, that's the strata. So how many people maybe I'm wrong? Hey, if these, these commercials have made you bought a car, fine. I just don't see how that makes me think that your car is great by saying, oh, this random person thinks it's cool. Yeah. So you will too bothered. Okay. Fairness extra that see there was, I knew there was something bothering listening, everybody. So yesterday, I was on the show with Kirk, and I was talking, we were talking about free agency and Kirk asked me the question like how do you feel if the Lakers strike out, because we had referenced the mcmenamin thing yesterday, and I said, you know, I don't think it's the it's the end of the world because I believe. That Vegas knows a lot of these things. Right. Hence why Anthony Davis is even money to be a Laker. Right. And then I pieced it together with my knowledge of David Griffin coming on this show. Back in the winter and talking about Brandon Ingram. And, and just being a guy who you know, he kind of sold me on Brandon Ingram. Unlike you, well, what happened, you could tell me what happened was, I had been arguing with George or muffs about Ingraham know what I'm not believe me, but then Griffin said that he liked him. So it's like, okay, what I said, says what I was. I've always believed in Brandon Ingram potential. I don't know if he was going to realize the potential in a Lakers uniform, when she still may not be honest with you. So there's very likely. That's not well, but so you're don't even Europe the qualified and it's an intensely fair to some extent GM. We're, we're friends won a championship. I still think like as you're hopefully, hopefully, you have some respect for my respell wherever I do. I can I cannot take it personally that you would have more respect. For David Griffin basketball opinion. General manager. Again, I just again that he crystallized what the exact same great and hellishly hopefully this gives me more credibility moving forward. The analogy was exit like he's like, he's like a baby deer who has grown into his body. You weren't massaging it that way. I'm a little more aggressive tone. He massaged it, he, he made me think of Bambi growing up, like you know what I'm saying, like, oh, 'lustration ask your question about Bambi is Bambi a boy or a girl. That's a great question because I always I was a girl, I assume because of the name that it was a girl. But then I was reading. But, you know, they have those Disney. Our boss, Dan. I don't know if he's listening, but has little kids or maybe he can help us with this. Yeah. I was reading one of those Disney's short books where they have this summary of Disney stories and five minutes, and it referred to Bambi as a boy, and I was very surprised to see this. So if somebody could please clarify, this somehow Google says, is Bambi a boy, or girl, Bambi, the title, character, Disney movie. The same is a young male deer. Yeah. Now, I, I don't know that shocked me, I'm yeah. But maybe that was I don't remember. I don't remember seeing the movie. Really? "David Griffin started to make his case to Anthony Davis about his plan his vision in New Orleans to reshape that franchise and I'm told that there will be conversations again. But those conversations will be focused with his agent Rich Paul than Anthony, at least here in the off season. Rich Paul was also at that meeting this morning, golden junior. Anthony Davis, pelicans thoughts. So this gets interesting because David Griffin is a guy who Rich Paul and LeBron James have some familiarity with because of their time in Cleveland and so not only do you have the newly found chip on the table of Zion Williamson news coming down there that you could sell as a reason to maybe keep holding this conversation off until the trade deadline. If you're able to make any headway at all, and I think that's what these early conversations have to be about. Is there any bit of Anthony Davis? That's open to the idea of remaining pelican because if there's not, and he's a guy who's making it clear. I'm gonna make this difficult, if I'm kept around here against my will then you've gotta start. Looking out to potential suitors because there is a lot to be had from the New York's the Boston's and the other teams that I'm sure are willing to grow very much compensate David Griffin in this franchise who convention their attention to building around Zion, and the next step for the French. It's such a branding conversation. Moving forward. Mike to that point for the pelicans is going to be about. I on what you don't want that conversation to be tainted by what's happening with Anthony Davis. You want to be able to move squarely forward. Trey is no longer singing. "Chains apple in the mouth, these peeling all this free, some grapes. I'm out. All right. David Griffin has decision make David Griffin has an won't pick in the draft. And David David Griffin has a top five player on his roster under contract for one more year that doesn't want to be there. He doesn't wanna be there, at least the last we heard legend to be here. So does he move him? Does he try to talk him into it? Does he try to do something to change his mind here? Brian win horse say at that he's going to try to do with AD with the Lakers did with Kobe Bryant. What I think, riff is, is contemplated. Here is the Kobe Bryant playbook. Remember Koby at one time that I'm not playing for the Lakers. Again, I've played my last date, all the radio and, and the Lakers held onto trade it for power of Saul rest is history. That is one way to go. But I will say something about Anthony Davis. I see all these knick fans who are depressed Stephen, like needed a therapist on our air at this morning. I think that the Knicks actually come out in really good position here. This draft. He talked to the experts breaks at three the quality of play with. Three and played for at least by the projections. We know that there's Donovan Mitchell coupons out there Korea seven but generally the value of the number three pick is higher than number four pick. The Anthony Davis has expressed interest in playing for New York. And if the Knicks are able to land, somebody free agency or two players and free agency. It only increases Anthony day was possible intention to play there and the Knicks interest in trading away their young players to win now, I think the Knicks are in is good at positions. They possibly could of dreamed of to.

NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Rumblings on Anthony Davis

"When it comes to Anthony Davis. Let's be clear about something, this is an individual that knew that he was going towards a supermax contract if he had made all the all NBA team, all second team, a couple of years in a row, you know, was an MVP whatever the case may be the stipulations that come with being a super max the number one or two businesses that you can only get it from the team that drafts you. Okay. So when you look at it from that perspective for the most what anyway, so when you look at it from that perspective, this is a man, that knew he was going towards the supermax deca pay him in excess of two hundred and fifteen million in Lord knows if you saw didn't even long term deal could approach three hundred million dollars and the man made it clear he was willing to walk away. So if you made it clear, then, even before, David Griffin arrived, what would make you think he would change his mind? Now you have to take into consideration. It's not about David Griffin. It's not about Alvin gentry. It's about the fact that he may want to be in a different locale and people in New Orleans and other players just need to accept that everybody doesn't wanna be down in the big easy. I love it. Two restaurants. A fabulous. The crowd is amazing, the fans of fantastic. Put it ain't for everybody. And that's really the situation after the Davis has been there long enough to know what he wants and what he doesn't want. And if the man said that he wanted out, and he allowed that to be circulated in disseminated rather than trying to convince him. Otherwise, if you really want to move forward move forward by moving on from him and making sure you get the best package as you possibly can.

Is Zion Williamson enough to completely change the Anthony Davis trade?

"To the draft lottery. Now New Orleans which six percent shot to get the number one pick got it almost certainly drafts. I n Williamson. The pelicans would love a line of which includes both on an AD. Anthony Davis put according to reports drafting Zion will not change Davis's trade demands. He still wants out Persad with eighty making a steak force in a trade with a chance to play alongside Zairean hasn't changed as as look when you're a superstar AD stature, you don't change based on a rookie draft pick that we don't know what he's going to be as much as we like him. This is about a big market. Let's face like, okay. What this is about. This is the team they lost regime Rondo outside of that day. Essentially had the same theme that swept the current Western Conference finals, Portland. Trailblazers bogey was on the was out though, it he was that was golfer to play. Off. So they swept them so and the organization wasn't that will run before. Now, you gotta solid GM and David Griffin. Okay. This is about a big market. So if AD can get to the Lakers with LeBron or still the Knicks to play with Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving, that's a good look fine. That wouldn't be a mistake outside of those two though, I do think a decent reconsider. This isn't a bad situation. You guys Zion. You got drew holiday. You got some other piece around him, and if Julius Randle ops out, which he probably will only go make my million had a very good year, and you wave and stretch Solomon hill, you could have twenty four million dollars to play with that helps you do a trait or get another player. Mike Conley is going to be on the market yet. Because John, right. So if you can get a Mike Conley to play withdrew holiday AD and

"Out of steam. But I I heard a Draymond green quote that he says it Marcus cousins in and say he's going to leave the team. But he says he is he is going to leave the team at the end of the year. Probably. But he says the DeMarcus cousins is upset that he's not in there at the end of the game. And we keep telling him don't worry about it said it had him on the floor at last night. And I understand that's when when fits and I had this little discussion. I'm just telling you that a guy like that who's used to being an all star in an Olympian. I don't know if he's if he's got any brains at all about next year. He's not going to be complaining and griping outwardly. But yeah, you want you're used to being on the floor when he counts, and I just wonder if that could be a drag off for the warriors. Well, I think it may be time for everybody. You know, me you everybody else DeMarcus to recalibrate what he is right now because he's not what he was. That simple. He's not what he was so defensive liability. They're going at him left. And right every time he's out there. And I, you know. They lost game last night. You know, they weird game really weird game on paper. You know? Golden State was a sucker bet. I didn't I didn't bet the game. But Golden State was favored on the road against a magic team those playing pretty good basketball and the third quarter was all Golden State. Golden State won the third quarter thirty to eleven but the fourth quarter was all Orlando thirty three fifteen in the fourth. And I it was it was, you know, no, Katie, no Dala Steph curry, you know, one shot one of six in the fourth quarter. He had a huge first quarter at fifteen in the first thirty three for the game. But one of six and the threats the most shots he's ever missing a game. Curry is it most shots. He's ever missed in a game last night. I don't have it in front. I believe it was twenty one bride double check that. They kept saying the most shots. He's missed in one game. I mean, it was too much. I mean, Orlando's playing well, and it was too much Aaron Gordon and Terrence Ross, and they got a decent game at a DJ Augustine in Orlando's bench warriors are not getting a lot of offense. Out of their bench, twelve points off their bench last night. So it's a bench pensions. Not performing you have. No, drank you have no dollar. That's really probably the main reasons they lost. But as far as me towncar how to coach I was just joking. But the big the Big Joe semi joking play Jordan bell my God, play Jordan bell. I mean, how many examples do you need there? You're a much faster team. You're a much more difficult cover. I think when you're playing Jordan bell, Jordan bell played a total Gary of thirteen minutes in the game. He almo- he had six points. He was plus six he had eight rebounds. He had an assist he can run the floor. He can finish at the rim. He can guard multiple positions. He can be a weak side shot blocker play Jordan bell to Marcus cousins in the fourth quarter. Played eight minutes almost nine minutes. Bell played three minutes. Cousins was over four from the field to rebounds, two turnovers. Minus seventeen for the quarter for DeMarcus Sam, I'm just saying. Roll agility, Gary hasn't guard anybody well, he he you know, he he doesn't run the floor. So he doesn't he doesn't give you that ability to steal fast-break points to the fast break points last night. Twenty two seven in favor of Orlando. Bell gets you out on the break. He can run. I mean, you say, well, none of this matters. It all matters in the playoffs. It does matter. You got twenty games left. You've got a half game lead over Denver for the number one seed, you want that number one seed, you want that home court, and I just think I just think that you know, I get it to Marcus has a certain rap. He's an all star. He's got a certain, you know, he he's he what he was is is in his mind in the mind of those teammates. But I think Kerr's got a look at it for reality today and just make the adjustment. He's diminished he has diminished guy, and he was never a great defender before. Now, he's really ally ability out there. Listen a race to go. Take DeMarcus to the. Hole. I mean, it's a he's got no agility. And then you've got bell sitting there can run the floor and finish at the rim. And he's frustrated with no minutes. I mean, this is going to be a tough call for because bells kinda young and seems kinda mouthy and deserves to play plays. It inconsistent personnel. If you ask why he's not getting his minutes bell. He's fired up about what a burger versus. You could see nothing wrong with laughing. But he needs to play. He needs to play. He can run the play in defense. But here here's the thing and blocked shots. I wonder if the warriors, honestly, if you took the old true serve thing are glad they have cousins. Now that would be if you ask Bob Myers occur. Are you happy to have him? That would be a really interesting Griffin yesterday with Tom and John. I love him. I think he's terrific DAX. Cavs GM. I didn't hear him with Tom was what I see him on the NBA channel all the time. Say it was really really good. He just brought up that the the genius of the cousins pickup is not what he gives Golden State. It's the fact that he's not on team battling Golden State. Well, but that means what he could be a threat then somewhere else. I mean, he he had a double double s I'm not saying DeMarcus has no talent. I mean, he had twenty one and eleven here. Here's here's a here's David Griffin yesterday and afternoon drive with Tom John. I might try telling him look, we might really miss some of the guys who left the one thing that people overlook about golden because they added DeMarcus cousins everybody thought, oh, man, the rich get richer. Well, they lost David west. In the NBA last year. It's the shooting percentage against his contest say lose jail McGee who spits in the NBA this year in value of his contest Damian Jones is playing really well early in the year and they lose him for the season. And he's the only one that gave them any of that McGee vertical spacing element. And then they lose that who he doesn't give them anything. They actually lost. It gives them. More of what they were already. Good at the honest with you, if you can't convince him to come off the bench, you you might not need what he gives you as a strike in what he gives you as a negative hers. It's it's fine to be bored. It's gonna flip the switch. But. Appreciably worse than some areas. And I think it shows because their margin for error. Just isn't what it once. What boy that guy is terrific. He'll be back in the league soon Griffin, man. And and that's that's what I'm bringing up is that, you know, it's easy. Just to say, we got a better group you sit down, but he's got a big ego. You've got a big ego and his future is on the line this year. Now, he's never gonna starve. But if the only thing that he has other teams have to go on is that he finished the year playing limited minutes with the warriors. He's not going to be happy with that. And and that's the thing. I I tell you either you let him go. If you really think that he's going to not be happy that you got to tell him and tell them what tell him that. Maybe we won't use you at all. Now, they need to use them. Need to use them. But they need to use bell a little bit more the fourth quarter cause bell is a runner a defender. They play more like them with bell bullets hit with Griffin said that that's where I'm going off. What he said that he doesn't improve you in the areas that you need help defender. He's not he's not a rim protector. He's not a shot. Blocker is not a rim protector. He doesn't run the floor. He doesn't offend and those are the things they needed out of the five spot because they got offense everywhere else. But he does bring some things. He was funny though, Griffin did say overall, he's not really concerned about Golden State that there may be just a little bored right now. One more from Griffin. I think it's a little bit of all of it. I think it's probably a little bit of how they deal with the expectations this year coming in and all of the Durant free agency looming over them and bogie getting ready. And then being they were really good initially. I think they've suffered of late within. So I mean, I think it's all of it. And I think more than anything else. This is what they're fits finals run. Now. They're really bored. It's really obvious particularly on the defensive side of the ball. And that's that's where those things always showed themselves. I wonder just aside piece here is this season too long to that is no doubt. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. But TV has to have something to ESPN, and and Turner TNT, I guess needs eighty two games. Yeah. They're bored. But it's more than that. It really is. Because the reality is they lost some good centerpieces. As far as defenders. They added a guy who's who's got good basketball IQ can score and pass. But he doesn't help them defensively. In fact, now they're worst defensively last year. They were like eleventh in the league and defensive rating when the playoffs started boom flip the switch number one this year. I think they're mid pack like fifteen or sixteen in defensive rating. And I don't think they're going to be able to flip that switch, and then you look at the other issue, which is no bench scoring. I mean their bench doesn't give them any points. That's an issue. And and there was an unfortunately for them. Nobody really shy you know, shook free at the at the buyout market. So that's come and gone. So no Kaminsky. No gore tot. No, no other. No, Ben Makomo are known anything. I mean there. What what they are is what they are. They'll be in Philly Saturday night against the six hundred maybe an underdog in that game. I'd love to see that. If Embiid if Embiid plays. This may be one of the few times the warriors. You're another dog you watch any of that game last night after the warriors. I did I do watch some of that that guy. That they got from the clippers. Unbelievable. I mean, you may be the best guy on the team now in seventy six. Somebody who's a forward they'd come on. They just picked him up from the clippers Tobias Harris eight thirty to go to him. Of course again. Embiid wasn't playing. But man, oh, man. They Simmons had a triple double. Yeah. He he's still got I agree with shooting was way off though, they you can't end of the game. If you can't put him on the free throw line, but I was just going to finish on cousins to say that I think the warriors are bored. And you've got four grade players. They're going to be all right. The only drawback would be if you do have to cater a little bit to a guy who know you got to sell them. You've got to sell. He's not going to be happy. This is. Sell him on the idea that, hey, DeMarcus your best roll with us is to be the the ball dominant figure on the second unit that that that keep that that I think some way somehow when it gets time crunch time. I think Kerr in the coaching staff will sell him on the fact that he is more valuable on this team as a ofensive ball dominant. Second unit, you know, guy who puts up a ton of shots, then starter, I think they're I think it'd be better off with bell starting 'cause coming off the bench in a ton of shots on Rogers are sitting. But if I'm an all-star if I'm Anne. He's got a big ego. And I'm used to making twenty million dollars a year. I'm not saying you purposely wrecked. The team by just I'm not showed up for practice. None of that. But if you gotta lug around a guy, that's not happy. Well, we'll see what happens here maybe are over overly lost. Plane's going to stay happy because that's part of him getting paid. And ultimately if it's all about getting to the destination gets paid if he doesn't play big minutes, especially down the stretch. You do I think he gets paid..
